In a move that has been rumored for months now, once-legendary and more recently outcast designer John Galliano has joined mysterious Parisian fashion house Maison Martin Margiela as creative director. WWD confirmed the designer's joining of the label this morning. Even Margiela fan Kanye West took to Twitter to confirm the rumors.
You might recall that Galliano was one of the world's most widely-respected and highly-regarded designers, until a video surfaced of him spewing anti-Semitic slurs while in a restaurant in Paris. The fashion world swiftly and unanimously shunned him, he lost his postiion as the creative director of Christian Dior, and he hasn't been heard much from since.
So his appointment to Margiela is major. "Margiela is ready for a new, charismatic, creative soul,” Renzo Rosso, president of OTB, the group that controls Margiela, told WWD. “John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time—a unique, exceptional couturier for a maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion. I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home.”
