J.Lo Reveals Why This 2001 Juicy Couture Outfit "Shocked Everyone"

Mark your calendars: Jennifer Lopez is set to accept the Video Vanguard award at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday, August 20. Ahead of the big night, Lopez decided to bless us with a special throwback clip—along with the amazing fashion backstory.

In an Instagram post, she shared behind-the-scenes details of her "I'm Real" music video with Ja Rule, explaining how she ended up wearing a pink Juicy Couture matching set. "The stylists brought me all this fancy couture from all the big designers," Lopez wrote in her caption. "But this little-known company Juicy sent these sweatsuits for me to chill and hang out in…I loved them so much I decided to wear it in the video with my throwback Adidas and my nameplate and a bun. I shocked everyone when I decided to wear it! It seemed fitting since the song is called 'I'm Real,' so I decided to be ME!!"

Everyone has a personal story about their Juicy Couture buys in the early 2000s, but Lopez's anecdote might just top them all. Scroll down to revisit the video and shop the 2018 version of the brand.

Erin Fitzpatrick
Senior News Editor

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 12 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of senior news editor (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
