Jamie Chung arrived at our Styled By shoot wearing the perfect summer outfit: an H&M straw boater hat paired with a Madewell sleeveless chambray shirt tucked into a black pleated midi skirt from Aritzia. It was flirty and accessible, precisely how the actress—check her out in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, starring Jessica Alba and in theaters August 22nd—describes her personal style. “Someone once categorized me as the downtown girl, and I like that because I am not just about the expensive labels,” Chung says. We like it too, and her effortless high-low mix is just one of the many reasons we’re avid followers of her blog What The Chung?, a picturesque photo diary of the Los Angeles native’s thoughtfully curated outfits and exotic travels—a.k.a. eye candy for the fashion obsessed.
With an eye for bold color and lively summer prints, we knew Chung would be the perfect subject to take over our fashion closet. So after assembling four floral-centric outfits, we headed out to Abbot Kinney in Venice (right outside our favorite pop-up shop Figue) to capture the standout looks in action. Keep scrolling to see all of Chung’s ensembles, which are flawlessly executed, just as you’d expect!

“[This look] is kind of perfect for Venice beach; it’s an interesting bikini cover. I really love how the pop of color peaked through the lace top.”
“I gravitated toward floral prints, whether it was a slight print on a jacket or something graphic.”
“I got to pick from one of the most amazing closets ever, which had so much of everything; it was very eclectic, lots of variety.”

“I love the mix and match of the florals in the dress, as well as the jacket. The BCBG dress is effortless, something you can just throw on over a bathing suit or kind of dress up like we did.”
“It was not my idea to pull the skirt down so it was more of a drop-waist and add the belt—that was all Laurie (Who What Wear’s Fashion Director). But I loved it, and that’s a trick I’m going to use from now on.”

“The look was very much summer, with standout items that you can easily transition to fall.”
“The skirt was great with everything we matched it with, but we settled on this really cute crop top and the Isabel Marant jacket. It’s three completely different prints that you wouldn’t really imagine going together, but they looked great.”

“I certainly do stand out when I’m in New York because I love color and prints, and I feel like a lot of people shy away from that unless it’s Fashion Week. The uniform for New York women is black, and I love a pop of red and cobalt blue. I am not shy at all with color.”
“The colors certainly need to marry somehow, and the red worked as a neutral for this look. The best trick to do, is go to a paint store or Home Depot and pick out swatches to see which colors work together and which don’t.”
