It's not often I meet an accessory trend that intimidates me. What's hard about accessories? They're the last-minute additions to an outfit that help add personality and a unique touch. They require minimal thought and often become a uniform. Your go-to belt. Your go-to ankle boots. Your "going out" clutch. Accessories become the add-ons that you can rely on year after year, season after season.
But since Kim Kardashian West's Vogue Australia cover in May 2016, I haven't stopped thinking about the corset trend. It teeters a fine line between apparel and accessory, but I personally think it falls in the latter category.
As a fashion editor, it's also not often I encounter a trend, then continue to obsess over it over a year later. My attention span lasts about 43 seconds before I move onto my next obsession—but there's something about this piece that feels like it transcends trends. If that makes sense. It has an Old World glamour that takes me back to eras before my time, while also feeling so now. (But not in a waist-trainer exercisey way). More like the finishing touch to an outfit, that takes it to another place.
I've been hesitant to trial this trend, thinking it would disappear the minute I slapped my money down, but it appears to show no sign of slowing down. I also thought it felt a bit "too much" for my simple style—but when a trend is this flattering and easy to throw on, why not give it a go?
If you've been curious about giving this trend a try, but have absolutely no idea where to start, let me help you. I've thrown together five simple looks (all worn with a pair of life-changing H&M jeans, but that's a story for another day) that you can easily recreate. They're an entry-level approach to the corset trend. I'm finally committed, and I'd love to know if you are too.
