A Designer Reveals: How Not to Fashion-Fail During Trans-Seasonal Weather

This time of year is tricky—depending on where you live in Australia, you can live through four seasons in one day (not to mention office air-con being confused about what it’s doing, too). To help speed up your morning routine during in-between weather, we went straight to an expert to get the low-down on what you should be buying from store right now, to ease the transition into winter.

Kylie Radford, of Morrison—an expert in layering, relaxed silhouettes, and beautiful details—gave us the lowdown on dressing for autumn. Keep scrolling for Radford’s top five tips.

1. Lots of Layers

I love a white shirt with an unexpected detail for in-between seasons. It might be an interesting cuff or pleat on a more masculine style shirt. Wear it under a lightweight knit or a wool vest and finish the look off with a sleeveless vest or jacket.

2. Lightweight Jackets

I’m based in Perth and it doesn’t get very cold here, so we dress in layers most of the time—lots of lightweight jackets (including a heavy cotton wrap kimono that looks like denim, but has a much softer feel) are perfect for layering.

3. Focus on Neutral Colours

This makes adding new season pieces in easy. I love whites and natural linens, they work back comfortably with more directional pieces and prints.

4. Choose Natural Fibres

Organic cottons, linens and silks create a refined, luxurious look while still being relaxed and let your body breathe.

5. Leather Pieces

I love a simple singlet or a tee with jeans, paired back with a quality leather jacket. Leather is the simplest way to toughen up a look in summer or winter.
