Plaid Prints

Last month we discussed the season's boldest print-plaid, but of course-and suggested that the easiest way to dip one's sartorial toe into these bold waters was via outerwear. Now that the tartan trend is in full tilt boogie mode, we figured it was time to show you how a few famous faces are choosing to wear the look.

Michelle Tractenberg, seen above leaving sushi in LA, bucked buffalo plaid convention by picking a short, double-breasted pea coat in green/black over the usual red/black combination. Agyness Deyn, on the other hand, might be a secret traditionalist. She wore a classic plaid button down in a tried-and-true color mix to a screening the new Todd Haynes film "I'm Not There." We like how she balanced the boxy shape of her plaid shirt with a pair of skinny jeans and her favorite Docs. Heidi Klum wore an outfit with a similar silhouette to a hair appointment; she also got the proportions right by wearing her oversized shirt with slim pants. [If you like Klum's detailed shirt, you'd better act fast as the Jovovich-Hawk Michelle Plaid Top is on sale and moving quickly ($160.80 on sale).] Naturally plaid isn't limited to tops alone, though it takes a bit more bravery to wear it elsewhere. Ali Larter stood out on the red carpet when she wore a simple, sleeveless, checked dress to ELLE's Women In Hollywood party while Lindsay Lohan's legs made a serious statement, courtesy of her tartan tights.

If you want to get clad in plaid, please remember that the print is iconic and bold, so it doesn't need any additional embellishment or design accouterment. Take a note from the above ladies and keep the rest of your outfit simple and (essentially) monochromatic for the best results.
