Who What Wear Australia: What do you love about Australian style?
Hanneli Mustaparta: The girls here have a very cool and casual vibe. Their style is very much their own whilst still being international. In terms of labels, I love Dion Lee, Karen Walker and Zimmermann. I love discovering new brands when I travel.
WWW: Where do you look for inspiration? Is it Instagram, fashion websites, magazines, the street?
HM: I have a lot of photography books by David Bailey and Juergen Teller, one of which documents castings from the ‘90s and showcases minimal, barely-there makeup from the decade, I find myself taking certain elements from it without even realising. I also look to old black and white Italian movies for their fabulous style and energy.
WWW: What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
HM: I’ve created my own path for myself, but I look up to women who are true to themselves without being apologetic. Women such as Anna Wintour, Franca Sozzani, Carine Roitfeld and Miuccia Prada know what they want and are good at what they do. Sometimes I find myself thinking, “What would Anna do?”
WWW: You travel a lot—do you have any pre-flight rituals?
HM: I try to drink a little extra water and a green vegetable juice so I don’t get dehydrated and sometimes I’ll get a hot dog in the taxi on the way to the airport in New York.
WWW: What are the items in your wardrobe and beauty products you can’t live without?
HM: That's easy. For my wardrobe? My vintage Levi’s jeans, a traditional Asian inspired dress and Fendi mini embellished bag. And in terms of beauty, eye cream by a German brand Nimue, Dior Prestige cream—it’s great for flying as it is so moisturising and Giorgio Armani foundation—I always buy two shades and mix the two together to get the right colour, especially when I’m on vacation and I’ve got a tan.
WWW: What will you be buying next from Net-a-Porter?
HM: A pair of Swarovski crystal-embellished glittered leather sandals by Miu Miu.
