When it comes to photographers in the fashion world, there are a few names that are instantly recognizable; Mario Testino, Annie Leibovitz, Nick Knight, and Steven Meisel are among them. But these great talents are mostly known for the fashion-centric images they have produced over the years—rising Los Angeles photographer Gray Malin occupies quite a different space.
Malin is mostly known for his striking aerial art photos of populous and glamorous beachside destinations, from Tahiti to the Hamptons. But he's also distinct in that he is one of the few photographers to cross the line between art and fashion, doing collaborative lines with swimwear brand Orlebar Brown and iconic shoe label Sperry Topsiders.
"I'm optimistic about the future of how fashion and photography can relate, but there's a fine line," Malin told us at the Palm Springs celebration of his newest project, Gray Malin at The Parker. "I think fashion and art meet in the creative mind. I have an idea of something I want to shoot during fashion week in New York; the creative ideas are already brewing."
Malin has also recently taken off in the fashion blogger world in a major way—Natalie Suarez of Natalie Off Duty and Olivia Lopez of Lust for Life are just two of the big-time bloggers who love his work. At fashion and industry parties from coast to coast, his eye-catching iPhone cases are omnipresent too.
