George Michael, English songwriter, pop superstar, and member of the '80s duo Wham!, passed away yesterday at the age of 53. He was found Christmas Day "in bed, lying peacefully," Michael's manager, Michael Lippman, told The Hollywood Reporter. It is suspected that he died from heart failure. The man behind "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Last Christmas" with Wham! and his own hits "Faith" and "Careless Whisper" will be remembered for his incredible talent and for always pushing the limits beyond his pop-star status.
One of his most iconic songs and music videos was "Freedom '90." The video for the 1990 hit starred supermodels Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, and Christy Turlingon—inspired by Peter Lindbergh's portrait of the same model squad that graced the January 1990 cover of British Vogue. Unlike in many videos of the era and today, the models did not play the role of love interest but instead lip-synced the song in Michael's place. The new direction and novel visuals cemented the women's place as supermodels and have become a lasting moment in fashion history.
