ICYMI, the 2026 Met Gala took place last week. On that ever-important first Monday in May, the world's biggest and buzziest celebs flocked to the Met's iconic staircase to show off jaw-dropping fashion and museum-worthy beauty looks. It might be affectionately referred to as "fashion's biggest night out," but I think it should be rebranded to "fashion and beauty's biggest night out" because I'm *still* thinking about the most striking hair and makeup looks. There was Hailey Bieber's goddess bun, Paloma Elsesser's "subversive, sexy skin," and Ayo Edebiri's angelic glam that featured a $180 Chanel foundation. Oh, and I can't forget about Nicole Kidman's waist-length hair extensions and Misty Copeland's soft and structural glow.

While I was watching the parade of celebs pass by, each one dripping in their art-inspired designer dresses, I was taken aback by Zoë Kravitz. This was her 11th(!) Met Gala appearance. Ever since I got engaged last year, I've become a jewelry snob. I'm Who What Wear's unofficial fine jewelry reporter, and my Instagram and Pinterest saves are all kinds of wacky jewelry trends I write about and shop for myself.

As announced by VOGUE, the theme of the 2026 Met Gala is "Costume Art". As always, the theme is derived from the Costume Institute's spring exhibition. According to the centre's head curator, Andrew Bolton, the theme addresses “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection".

The museum reports that the exhibition will "pair garments with artworks to reveal the inherent relationship between clothing and the body". It continues, "from the formal to the conceptual, the aesthetic to the political, the individual to the universal, the illustrative to the symbolic, and the playful to the profound, these pairings are organised into a series of thematic body types that reflect their pervasiveness and endurance through time and cultures."

It's been over three months since I first laid eyes on Alexa Chung wearing a butter-yellow jacquard opera coat as a dress to a Christmas dinner in London hosted by musician and producer Mike Skinner. The silk-taffeta coat had a cocoon-like shape similar to popular styles in the early 1900s, as well as a fur collar and cuffs, which Bulgarian designer Viktor Gichev, who works at One of a Kind vintage archive in London's Portobello Market, crafted using repurposed mink. It also featured a frog closure, or pankou, which are braided knots that stem from China's Tang and Song Dynasties and are traditionally found on cheongsam garments, and tassel embellishment.

I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's been no help that most of those three months have been spent spotting similar ornate, silk coats with fur trim, on other It girls, including Margot Robbie during the Wuthering Heights tour, Kate Moss outside of the Ritz Paris, Tish Weinstock on the catwalk at the Conner Ives show during London Fashion Week, and now, on Zoë Kravitz, hand-in-hand with Harry Styles after his stint hosting Saturday Night Live last weekend. I'm guilty of forgetting the magic of fashion sometimes, whilst in the midst of it 24/7, but when you see pieces like these, it's impossible not to be filled with awe.

Gichev's designs, which are all made-to-order, have become the talk of many fashion circles, with comments of appreciation arriving under his posts from names like Camille Charriere and Adwoa Aboah. He makes them in his free time, designing Paul Poiret–esque pieces out of repurposed fabrics, like ornate curtains and more. In an interview with British Vogue, he described his practice of "letting the fabric talk."

Essentially, instead of conceptualizing a garment and then sourcing materials, he finds his antique fabrics first and lets them dictate the shape they'll be crafted into. It's this method that's responsible for the unique shape and bespoke nature of Chung's coat.

It's no wonder that this outerwear style is appearing everywhere right now—it's proven to be perfect for the confusing winter-to-spring transitional season we're currently living in. The silhouette is similar to an Afghan coat (later nicknamed a Penny Lane coat after it was featured on Kate Hudson's character of the same name in Almost Famous, circa 2000), but far more lightweight and delicate, since it's made of antique silk, as opposed to warm sheepskin like the sort that originated in Ghazni, Afghanistan in the early 20th century. What this modern interpretation lacks in practicality, though, it makes up for with artful aesthetics and unexpected versatility, with wearers styling their versions with everything from denim to gowns.

Arguably the most notable designer of today's silk coats is Conner Ives, a fellow London-based creative with high-profile friends. Moss, Weinstock, and Kravitz's lavish top layers have all come from Ives, who was born and raised in New York but moved to the UK to study at Central Saint Martins. Charriere has also posted photos wearing one of his designs, and Jennifer Lawrence wore one on the red carpet at the end of last year with a custom Armani Privé gown during her press tour for Die My Love. His designs are simultaneously everywhere and nowhere—forever discussed among stylish people, but never overexposed due to the handmade nature of his designs.

Ives' fall/winter 2026 show opened with Weinstock wearing a yellow, demi couture silk tapestry coat that, according to an Instagram post by the designer, was created using large, hand-embroidered silk tapestries dating back to the Qing Dynasty, which took place between 1644 and 1911 in China, marking a period of prolific cultural and artistic achievements, according to the National Museum of Asian Art. Motifs from these preserved tapestries were cut out and hand-appliquéd onto the silhouette's silk crepe satin base to create the resulting outerwear. "A mind-numbing amount of work realized by a team that feels as passionate about craft as I do," Ives wrote. "All made locally in London."

The most recent sighting was of Kravitz, who wore a light-blue, short version with a sheer slip and vintage Manolo Blahnik sandals (sourced from The Vintage Marché). Her coat was custom-made and crafted with faux shearling derived from a wool-and-recycled polyester that Ives had on hand as dead stock from previous production. The look immediately went viral, and not only because she and Styles are one of the buzziest couples of the moment. Her coat was the star of the show, which also says a lot given that Styles had on a leopard-print Chanel jacket by Matthieu Blazy, one of the most talked-about designers in all of fashion this year. Below, I'm sharing all the insider intel given to me on these braids, plus everything I'll be using to maintain mine the next time I'm sitting in a salon chair for this style.

What is the "Zoë Kravitz braids" trend?

Growing up, I remember spotting Kravitz wearing her sandy brown hair in pin-straight, bouncy, defined curls, and tucked away in faux locs. For the last year, however, I've become aware of a protective style that Kravitz has quickly become the main reference for: small or micro-braids blended with bundles of human hair or accented with soft curls for a full, romantic look. In some recent images of the actress wearing this style at red carpet events and on press tours, it's challenging to know for sure where her hair begins and ends when blended with the braids, or the exact placement of the bundles.

What should I ask my braider for?

When trying any protective hairstyle for the first time, it's always helpful to bring along images that your stylist can reference. Long before I sit in the salon chair or Katompa's hands, I share high-resolution shots that capture my desired look so she can help determine everything from the colors of my braiding hair bundles to the placements of her sections. If you would like to achieve the soft, boho-inspired micro braids as worn by Kravitz, she recommends describing the details rather than just using the term that has been popularized by social media.

"As a client, I would ask for very small knotless braids that are lightweight," she says. "I use lightweight human braiding hair with different textures for the install," says Katompa. Usually, she braids hair to the mid-back or waist of her client before leaving the ends loose and curly for an airy, boho finish that resembles Kravitz's signature look.

When she stepped in front of cameras at the Caught Stealing premiere in New York City in August 2025, it looked as if she wore her tresses long, loose, and glossy. Additionally, using a mousse will help refresh curls. "Using a silk bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase at night is essential for protection. This is nonnegotiable if you want the braids to last," she says.

According to Katompa, water-based hair products should be your best friends for maintaining this protective style. "Keep the ends and curls hydrated, not coated," she says. "Use your fingers (not a comb) to gently separate the curls when they’re tangled." The last thing you want to do is dry out your strands, which results in frizz, dullness, and knotting. Despite only launching last week as part of the brand’s Valentine’s Day collection, influencer Lucy Williams has already flaunted the find on her Instagram account. If Only If’s owner and creative director, Emily Campbell, explains that the dress's appeal comes down to the fact that the silhouette is "timeless and feminine—two things that will never go out of style."

Proving this point even further is perennial It girl Alexa Chung, who recently wore a chartreuse-and-lemon-coloured lace-trim slip from emerging British brand, Debute. Everything about it was pure perfection, from her elegant updo—complete with wispy tendrils and a silver flower pin—to her rosy lips and lids to her "cloudy French" mani. Yes, I really did zoom all the way in on those red carpet photos and clocked a sheer, foggy polish that made her tips look swathed in silk. Luckily for me, celebrity manicurist Betina Goldstein shared all the details on Kravitz's manicure du jour, plus a close-up shot to take to your next nail appointment. Goldstein dubs this set "soft, natural nails with a touch of cloudy French," which takes it a step further from your average clean, naked mani. Essentially, think of it like sheer dressing for your nails. Just as how you might don a see-through garment cut from organza, tulle, or lace, this manicure incorporates a translucent veil over a classic sheer French. To get the look, Goldstein first applies a coat of milky-pink polish on Kravitz's nails (The GelBottle Inc's Chiffon, to be exact), then adds one thin coat of milky white lacquer "just on the tips of the nails to color correct." Seal everything with a glossy top coat, and you'll wind up with that perfectly foggy finish.

For even more of a "cloudy" effect, you can even reapply another sheer layer of your base polish and dial up the haze. Just make sure your two previous coats have completely dried, otherwise you might wind up with more of a blurred, ombré French (aka, Frombé)—a stunning look in its own right, but I'll personally be wearing Kravitz's cloudy iteration all season long.

I’ve worked in fashion for nearly a decade now, so I’m well acquainted with the ebb and flow of trends, and I honestly believed that there was very little that could truly shock me anymore, but I was mistaken. If I’m being completely honest, I get a bit bored when I hear about layering, so I don’t write about it all that much. We all get it already—layering is key this time of year. That said, every so often, I come across an example of such genius, innovative layering that I actually feel some excitement. In this instance, the layering that caught me so off guard (in a good way) came via Zoë Kravitz.

Kravitz and Harry Styles are back on the streets of Rome (where they were first spotted back in August), and Kravitz’s low-key winter outfit included khaki pants, loafers, a knitted scarf tied around her head, and the styling trick that I won’t soon forget: a base coat layered under a topcoat, both in wool and tonal complementary shades.
