ICYMI, the 2026 Met Gala took place last week. On that ever-important first Monday in May, the world's biggest and buzziest celebs flocked to the Met's iconic staircase to show off jaw-dropping fashion and museum-worthy beauty looks. Ever since I got engaged last year, I've become a jewelry snob. I'm Who What Wear's unofficial fine jewelry reporter, and my Instagram and Pinterest saves are all kinds of wacky jewelry trends I write about and shop for myself.

Dripping in pendant necklaces, fur-trimmed jackets and chunky accessories, the looks also honoured the Japanese designer’s autumn/winter 2005 collection “Broken Brides”, which was a subtle full-circle moment, given it also acknowledged the year they first started attending.

Style Notes: You can rest assured that whenever Zendaya has confirmed her RSVP, a sartorial feast is guaranteed. As one of the pioneers of method dressing, the 29-year-old takes her job as a guest incredibly seriously. However, when it came to her co-chairing the event in 2024, she exceeded all expectations.

Not only did she both open and close the red carpet with two separate but incredibly visionary looks, she delivered the most hauntingly beautiful interpretation of the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. With the dress code being "The Garden of Time," which was inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story exploring themes of beauty, decay, and the fleeting nature of time, she wore a custom gown by John Galliano for Maison Margiela that embodied the ephemeral and elegant source material. Quite euphoric.

5. Kate Moss

Style Notes: Another iconic co-chair came in the form of Kate Moss. Attending the 2009 iteration, which adhered to the theme “The Model as Muse”, she proved the power that supermodels wield as the ultimate shapeshifter. A true incarnation of Marc Jacobs' vision for the evening, she ditched her Camden-core leather jackets, skinny jeans and knee-high boots for a gold lame mini dress and matching Elizabeth Taylor-inspired turban.

6. Zoë Kravtiz

Style Notes: One of the symbols for Anthony Vaccarello’s sensually sophisticated visions for Saint Laurent, Zoë Kravitz was truly firing on all cylinders when she arrived at the 2021 Met Gala. Dressing to the theme “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, the actor-turned-director’s phenomenally risqué wore what could only be described as a netted dress made from dazzling crystals that made the shape of itty-bitty YSL monograms. Because who needs a slip dress when you’re dripping in diamantes?

7. Lady Gaga

Style Notes: Why have one look when you can have four? That was the thesis question that Lady Gaga designed her 2019 Met Gala ensemble around, landing on a captivating Brandon Maxwell look that was part performance art, part moving installation and completely camp.

Beginning with a magenta overcoat that featured an elongated train and accompanied by five dancers, she later slipped into a gown before changing into a Madonna-esque column dress, before closing out her epic entrance in a sequin-encrusted black bralette, panties, fishnet tights and platform booties.

8. Lily-Rose Depp

Style Notes: As someone who was appointed as one of Karl Lagerfeld’s “choupettes” as a teenager, it should come as no surprise that Lily-Rose Depp has almost unlimited access to Chanel’s archives for her public appearances.

At the 2019 Met Gala, The Idol star embraced the French maison’s most vampy silhouettes in a little black dress adorned with gold chains and gilded camellias. The piece was also first worn by Christy Turlington on the luxuriate’s spring/summer 1992 runway and later featured on Penelope Cruz in Pedro Almodóvar’s 2009 romantic thriller Broken Embraces.

9. Naomi Campbell

Style Notes: From walking the runway alongside her fellow “supers” to George Michael’s “Freedom” for Versace’s autumn/winter 1991 show to wearing the Italian designer’s iconic chainmail butterfly dress to an event alongside Kate Moss in 1999, Naomi Campbell has had no shortage of iconic Versace moments in her lifetime. Of course, the most sentimental moment came when she attended the 1995 Met Gala—the first hosted by Anna Wintour—alongside the brand’s founder, Gianni.

Style Notes: It’s quite a feat to make the Met Gala best dressed list on your first time attending. But that’s exactly what South African pop sensation Tyla did for the 2024 event. In the spirit of surrealism and trompe l'oeil, the singer arrived in a Balmain dress that evoked the sands of time.

The gown was a custom fit to her figure and ended up being so tight that she needed to be carried up the steps by a security guard. Made from a plaster moulding that combined mica and mirror powder, the look was a true standout and firmly established her place in fashion’s elite circles.

Style Notes: Though she might be known for her signature stealth wealth way of dressing, Kendall Jenner delivered her most high-octane look when attending the 2019 Met Gala in custom Versace. Wearing Marty Supreme orange and a feathered gown that left a trail of plumage, the look has become incredibly iconic over the years for the way the showgirl-esque silhouette completely transformed the model turned tequila maven. Later that year, for her Halloween-themed birthday party, the waiters were dressed up in this exact costume, proving just how camp the look actually was.

12. Kim Kardashian

Style Notes: Of course, it wouldn’t be a guide to the most iconic Met Gala dresses if it didn’t include this Kim Kardashian look on the list. Love it or hate it, this infamous Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy design helped segue the reality star and aspiring lawyer into a new stratosphere of fame.

Whilst many were vicious in their lamenting over her attendance at the event in the first place, the majority were brutal in tearing down the dress itself. Earning comparisons to Robin Williams in Mrs Doubtfire and even the couches owned by grandmothers, it's safe to say that Skims founder herself had the last laugh, given how iconic this look has become in its own right.

Style Notes: Bearing resemblance to both an Oscar statuette and Star Wars character C3PO, Anne Hathaway’s Ralph Lauren dress from the 2015 Met Gala just proves how ahead of the fashion curve she is. This is a fact we might all recognise now, but it wasn’t the case over a decade ago. But as her fictional grandmother in The Princess Diaries, played by the incredibly Dame Julie Andrews, said, a queen is never late, everyone else is simply early.

What Is The Theme of the 2026 Met Gala?

As announced by VOGUE, the theme of the 2026 Met Gala is "Costume Art". As always, the theme is derived from the Costume Institute's spring exhibition. According to the centre's head curator, Andrew Bolton, the theme addresses “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection".

The museum reports that the exhibition will "pair garments with artworks to reveal the inherent relationship between clothing and the body". It continues, "from the formal to the conceptual, the aesthetic to the political, the individual to the universal, the illustrative to the symbolic, and the playful to the profound, these pairings are organised into a series of thematic body types that reflect their pervasiveness and endurance through time and cultures."

The exhibition is sponsored by tech billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, Saint Laurent and Condé Nast.

What is the Dress Code for the 2026 Met Gala?

Accompanying the theme, guests are invited to adhere to a compulsory dress code that further elucidates the crux of the exhibition. Keeping things incredibly simple for the 2026 event, the dress code is "Fashion is Art". This can be translated however the guest sees fit and can run the gamut from gowns that literally transpose famous works onto fabric to dresses that embrace the Métiers d'Art (or arts and crafts) that underscores any ensemble.

Oh, to be on a long walk in London with Harry Styles. The cool-girl shoes in question? Soft loafers by The Row (of course), adding to the many shoe trends that the brand is responsible for starting. Soft loafers aren’t your average pair of loafers. They're malleable and fit the foot very comfortably, almost like a glove. As a resident of the very walkable NYC, Kravitz knows a thing or two about chic and comfortable footwear to log miles in. It's been over three months since I first laid eyes on Alexa Chung wearing a butter-yellow jacquard opera coat as a dress to a Christmas dinner in London hosted by musician and producer Mike Skinner. The silk-taffeta coat had a cocoon-like shape similar to popular styles in the early 1900s, as well as a fur collar and cuffs, which Bulgarian designer Viktor Gichev, who works at One of a Kind vintage archive in London's Portobello Market, crafted using repurposed mink. It also featured a frog closure, or pankou, which are braided knots that stem from China's Tang and Song Dynasties and are traditionally found on cheongsam garments, and tassel embellishment.

I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's been no help that most of those three months have been spent spotting similar ornate, silk coats with fur trim, on other It girls, including Margot Robbie during the Wuthering Heights tour, Kate Moss outside of the Ritz Paris, Tish Weinstock on the catwalk at the Conner Ives show during London Fashion Week, and now, on Zoë Kravitz, hand-in-hand with Harry Styles after his stint hosting Saturday Night Live last weekend. I'm guilty of forgetting the magic of fashion sometimes, whilst in the midst of it 24/7, but when you see pieces like these, it's impossible not to be filled with awe.

Gichev's designs, which are all made-to-order, have become the talk of many fashion circles, with comments of appreciation arriving under his posts from names like Camille Charriere and Adwoa Aboah. He makes them in his free time, designing Paul Poiret–esque pieces out of repurposed fabrics, like ornate curtains and more. In an interview with British Vogue, he described his practice of "letting the fabric talk."

Essentially, instead of conceptualizing a garment and then sourcing materials, he finds his antique fabrics first and lets them dictate the shape they'll be crafted into. It's this method that's responsible for the unique shape and bespoke nature of Chung's coat.

On Alexa Chung: Viktor Gichev coat

It's no wonder that this outerwear style is appearing everywhere right now—it's proven to be perfect for the confusing winter-to-spring transitional season we're currently living in. The silhouette is similar to an Afghan coat (later nicknamed a Penny Lane coat after it was featured on Kate Hudson's character of the same name in Almost Famous, circa 2000), but far more lightweight and delicate, since it's made of antique silk, as opposed to warm sheepskin like the sort that originated in Ghazni, Afghanistan in the early 20th century. What this modern interpretation lacks in practicality, though, it makes up for with artful aesthetics and unexpected versatility, with wearers styling their versions with everything from denim to gowns.

Arguably the most notable designer of today's silk coats is Conner Ives, a fellow London-based creative with high-profile friends. Moss, Weinstock, and Kravitz's lavish top layers have all come from Ives, who was born and raised in New York but moved to the UK to study at Central Saint Martins. Charriere has also posted photos wearing one of his designs, and Jennifer Lawrence wore one on the red carpet at the end of last year with a custom Armani Privé gown during her press tour for Die My Love. His designs are simultaneously everywhere and nowhere—forever discussed among stylish people, but never overexposed due to the handmade nature of his designs.

Ives' fall/winter 2026 show opened with Weinstock wearing a yellow, demi couture silk tapestry coat that, according to an Instagram post by the designer, was created using large, hand-embroidered silk tapestries dating back to the Qing Dynasty, which took place between 1644 and 1911 in China, marking a period of prolific cultural and artistic achievements, according to the National Museum of Asian Art. Motifs from these preserved tapestries were cut out and hand-appliquéd onto the silhouette's silk crepe satin base to create the resulting outerwear. "A mind-numbing amount of work realized by a team that feels as passionate about craft as I do," Ives wrote. "All made locally in London."

The most recent sighting was of Kravitz, who wore a light-blue, short version with a sheer slip and vintage Manolo Blahnik sandals (sourced from The Vintage Marché). Her coat was custom-made and crafted with faux shearling derived from a wool-and-recycled polyester that Ives had on hand as dead stock from previous production. The look immediately went viral, and not only because she and Styles are one of the buzziest couples of the moment. Her coat was the star of the show, which also says a lot given that Styles had on a leopard-print Chanel jacket by Matthieu Blazy, one of the most talked-about designers in all of fashion this year. Kravitz's look was, of course, styled by her longtime stylist Danielle Goldberg.

This coat's appeal? The richness of its craft and appearance. It's a great week to be in New York City. The weather is in the upper 60s, and the vibes are high. The actress and singer is featured prominently on my Pinterest board, which is seek to pinpoint the equilibrium between '90s afro-modernism and eclectic boho fashion, and has certainly made frequent appearances in my Instagram Saved folder dedicated to glowy makeup looks, but it's her eye-catching protective hairstyles that deliver nonstop inspiration for experimentation.

Despite my fascination with Kravitz's signature braids, I have a tendency to play it safe. Katompa, who recently opened a chic salon location in the city's buzzy Capitol Hill neighborhood, revealed just how easy the hairstyle is to achieve using the right products, patience, and a steady hand.

Below, I'm sharing all the insider intel given to me on these braids, plus everything I'll be using to maintain mine the next time I'm sitting in a salon chair for this style.

What is the "Zoë Kravitz braids" trend?

Growing up, I remember spotting Kravitz wearing her sandy brown hair in pin-straight, bouncy, defined curls, and tucked away in faux locs. For the last year, however, I've become aware of a protective style that Kravitz has quickly become the main reference for: small or micro-braids blended with bundles of human hair or accented with soft curls for a full, romantic look. In some recent images of the actress wearing this style at red carpet events and on press tours, it's challenging to know for sure where her hair begins and ends when blended with the braids, or the exact placement of the bundles.

"It's less about a set of rules, and more about a look that people recognize and connect with." Other names have also been attributed to the style, such as pick and drop or tree braids, both involving braiding hair and delicate, loose strands sprinkled throughout.

If I’m being completely honest, I get a bit bored when I hear about layering, so I don’t write about it all that much. We all get it already—layering is key this time of year. That said, every so often, I come across an example of such genius, innovative layering that I actually feel some excitement. November 2025 marks Who What Wear UK’s 10th birthday. Yes, we’ve been writing about the trends to take note of, the luxury pieces worth investing in, the beauty heroes and hacks we can’t wait to share and the outfits the team have been rotating for a whole decade! We hope you’ve enjoyed reading our stories as much as we’ve loved creating them. To celebrate the occasion, you’ll find a range of special ten-year-anniversary content across the site this month, from retrospective looks at the biggest fashion moments to the couples who defined the decade and the products that have earned true cult status. If there was one phrase to sum up the past year, it would be the title of Charli XCX and Caroline Polacheck’s 2024 single, “Everything Is Romantic”. The song, which was featured in the teaser trailer for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, croons about falling in love again and again and has since gone viral on social media after its initial release on the British singer’s magnum opus album, Brat.

Love, clearly, is in the air, and given this collective mood coincides with Who What Wear UK’s 10th anniversary celebration, there’s never been a better time to look back on the stylish pairings that best embrace this. Indeed, there have been countless best-dressed celebrity couples vying for the crown throughout the course of our small but mighty history. Here on home soil, we have duos like Sienna Miller and Oli Green, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham and Alexa Chung and Tom Sturridge, all of whom make London’s vibrant fashion scene all the more exciting when they step out.

Across the pond, there are established relationships like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce and Lily-Rose Depp and 070 Shake, who prove that affairs of the heart are closely intertwined with those of the style variety. Of course, there are also emerging love stories, like the one between Lana Del Rey and alligator wrangler husband Jeremy Dufrene or Bella Hadid and her real-life cowboy Adan Banuelos, who constantly keep us on our toes with the way they radically dress to their own accord for their outings. Whilst it would’ve been lovely to include notable past looks like John F. We all know by now that the innately cool Zoë Kravitz wears whatever she wants and looks chic and effortless 100% of the time. One of her latest outfits is the perfect example of this and is proof that she doesn't exactly follow archaic fashion rules.

The wrong-shoe theory is still going strong in 2025, so it's inevitable that the trend would make its way to bags. Kravitz's choice to pair a raffia bag with an all-black fall outfit is pretty much the textbook definition of the trend. I'm not sure what it is about fall, but by mid-October, I often find myself in a style rut. It feels like everything I know about dressing well just slips my mind. While I may get a bit self-critical, I never panic because I know there are different ways to find inspiration and create outfits. My favorite method is to look at various celebrity street style outfits, especially those of Zoë Kravitz.
