Earlier this November, I felt downright giddy when I realized my Australia trip was right around the corner. A sunny reprieve in the middle of winter (okay, I live in California, but still)? Yes, please!

I was so blinded by my own sunny outlook that I chose to ignore my Australian relatives' warnings. November, they warned me, was more akin to spring, and rain was far likelier than beach days. "Totally," I agreed as I spread bikinis out on my bed.

Here's the cold, hard truth: Melbourne is chilly. Weather-wise, it's got the moody marine layer of San Francisco with a healthy dash of Seattle fog. It's a gorgeous city but a gray city nonetheless! Your girl was freezing, her dreams of returning stateside a sun-kissed goddess dashed. Ever the optimist and buoyed by a daily diet of piping-hot meat pies, I chose to look on the bright side. I was 11 hours ahead of home, putting me in the unique position of living in the future, baby! With newfound zeal, I hit the streets, credit card at ready and a keen eagle eye trained on what the cool Melbourne girls were wearing. 

A GREAT PAIR OF SUNGLASSES

Due to its geographical location, the sun in Australia is no joke. While this meant I got to stock up on some excellent sunscreen (local beauty brands are my favorite souvenirs), it also meant I never went outside without my shades on me. Even on the foggiest Melbourne day, Australians are prudent about their UV protection, meaning a cool array of sunnies is spotted all over the city.

FLORALS? FOR SPRING?

Forgive me for that Devil Wears Prada reference. I'm only human. Floral prints reigned supreme, and I noticed a wide and gorgeous array of brightly colored sundresses on my daily strolls. The women in Melbourne looked like hothouse flowers, draped in structured, flared, and layered numbers that easily took them from day to night.

Melbourne is a walking city full of beautiful architecture and great public transportation. A pair of lug-soled booties I packed at the last minute was my daily go-to, and I blended right in among the sea of ankle boots.

A LIGHT TOP LAYER

Did I mention the weather wasn't great? I'd been warned Melbourne is a "four seasons daily" sort of city and that packing a light layer is de rigueur. I spotted lots of great lightweight trenches and oversize but polished denim jackets.

I've re-observed the skirt trends we first witnessed on runways in London, Milan, New York and Paris and four particular styles feel the most prominent and compelling. That is, transparent skirts with a '90s lilt, bright white, skirts incorporating tassel elements and of course, leather—a failproof winter hero. Growing up in Sydney, the brand’s hometown, I remember so vividly the feeling of envy, admiration and aspiration walking past its Bondi Junction boutique as a teenager. I’d peer into the window, marvelling at the billowing fabric that seemed to defy gravity that adorned the mannequins. The glamorous women I’d see behind the glass were exotic to me, an apparent culmination of having ‘made it’ in some way to have the means to shop there.

As I got older, one of my first major jobs in my career brought me closer to the brand, as the PR firm I worked for boasted Zimmermann as a founding client. From that moment, my relationship with the brand changed. These beautiful gowns are more than just pretty things to admire and feel good in, but are representative of two women’s drive, grit and determination for bringing a touch of escapism.

What Is the History of Zimmermann?

Zimmermann’s brand story began in 1991 when sisters Nicky and Simone founded the namesake label. In the years prior to the inception, Nicky had followed in the footsteps of their mother, Joan, and began handmaking garments in the family’s garage in between her tertiary studies at East Sydney Technical College in the inner-city suburb of Darlinghurst.

On the weekends, Zimmermann would take the garments to a local market in the leafy neighbourhood of Paddington, a stone’s throw from the school, to, as the tale is told, “afford to buy more fabric and maybe go out on a Saturday.” (As per Zimmermann’s interview with Harper’s Bazaar. Interest grew naturally, and within a short time, Zimmermann had its first wholesale order after a spread appeared in the local edition of Vogue, courtesy of a styling assistant friend who just happened to pique the interest of the fashion director when wearing a piece into work one day.

A flagship store followed after and by 2003, they had opened that outpost that would define how I perceived modern Australian luxury. The brand staged its first fashion show in 1996 in Sydney, a harbourside location it would continue to show collections at before making the jump to New York and cementing itself on the international stage in 2014. Zimmermann had longstanding roots in the United States after opening a boutique on Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles in 2011 before following that up with a second offering in SoHo, New York in 2012. A decade later, in 2022, Zimmermann traded the cobblestone streets of Manhattan for the Haussmannian architecture of Paris, where they’ve remained a firm fixture and favourite on the Paris Fashion Week schedule ever since.

Of course, it’s not just in America that its sense for playful romantic and unapologetic coastal-meets-city outlook resonates. In the early 2010s, Zimmermann put its stamp on the UK and Europe by unveiling spaces in Mayfair and Saint Tropez, respectively. Its global domination is clear—regardless of the location, women will always gravitate towards the brand's bohemian delicacy and breezy opulence. It’s these traits that have made Zimmermann a mainstay come summer, with the label’s resort pieces cropping up across balmy rooftops in Greenwich Village, beach clubs in Capri and the seaside restaurants in East Hampton. What Is Zimmermann Known for?

Zimmermann is best known for its swimwear and dresses. Yet, it’s the latter that has proven to be the brand’s most recognisable silhouette. No two pieces are the same from Zimmermann, but each design is enriched through flouncy silk fabrics that evoke the movement of jellyfish, punchy botanicals often derived from collaboration with significant artists, soft pastel languid landscapes that demand to transport you and vintage elements that hark back to Australiana of yore. (A music program broadcasted in the '70s called Countdown, yacht clubs of the '50s and the pouffy, hairspray-fragranced high school days of the ‘80s when Molly Ringwald and the Brat Pack reigned supreme.)

With Fashion Week Australia coming up next week, we can’t help but imagine what it will be like… What will the street style look like? Whose shows will blow us away this year? Which new designer will catch our attention? And along with all these thoughts swimming around in our heads, we also can’t help but wonder how Fashion Week Australia compares to other fashion weeks around the world.

Thankfully, we were able to reach out to fashion guru and INF / Network member Chloe Hill, who attended multiple fashion weeks this year for the inside scoop. To hear about how each fashion week differs, and which one is the best, keep scrolling to read the full Q&A.

Does each city’s fashion week feel different, or do they begin to all seem the same?

There are aspects of fashion week that remain unchanged city to city (the plain on-site show venues always feel as if you could be anywhere in the world), but the DNA of each city is very noticeable. From the people attending shows (serious minimalists in Sydney, or print-loving Milanese girls) to the designs shown on the runway, every city clearly stands out from the next.

Is there one fashion week in particular that stands out in your mind, or do you find that you gravitate more towards individual shows?

Without a doubt Milan. There is something so beautiful about the city and the people which shines through during fashion week. From taxi drivers to the sweets Nonnas on the tram, the whole city gets excited about fashion week. It’s a culture where they really take it seriously—it’s not frivolous, it’s a serious business and they care deeply about supporting it.

What is the excitement like surrounding fashion week in differing cities? Are some more enthusiastic than others? Are some more blasé?

Since New York is the first city in the circuit, there is a feeling of excitement surrounding the week. Everyone is fresh and ready for it!

After that, a lot of international editors skip London, so it has much more of a local feel and you really see the UK industry getting involved. I would say the enthusiasm is definitely still there.

Paris Fashion Week is such an institution and not such a novelty, so there’s more of an appreciation instead of excitement. Also everyone is so tired by the time it rolls around, so show-goers are quite mellow. Although, street style photographers are out in full force so that creates quite a manic atmosphere.

Milan is the one place where I feel there’s a genuine excitement, but maybe that’s just because I love it so much! I wish in Sydney there was more excitement surrounding Fashion Week Australia. Everyone gets way too serious when they should be having so much fun!

Do you think that fashion week street style varies from one city to the next?

No matter where you go, there is always a barrage of show-goers in the 'label of the moment'. On the last show circuit it was Balenciaga. Before that, everyone was wearing Vetements and Off White, and so on. That type of style remains the same around the world; but if you get past the people who are trying so hard and dig a little deeper, every city has amazing locals who have a style of their own that I feel represents the city. In Milan, there are so many amazing girls rocking Marni and Missoni like pros. In London, it is girls like Susie Bubble who really embrace emerging talent and actually wear their designs IRL. In Sydney, it’s the low key editors like Claudia Jukić and Monica Russell who pull off such beautiful, effortless outfits and I feel really stand out from the crowd.

When you were planning your outfits for different fashion weeks, did the location influence what you chose to wear?

To tell you the truth, it’s all about the weather! There is an element of dressing up a little more in Milan and in Paris where everyone is so chic. While in London and New York, a more casual outfit is fine. But overall, I’m just thinking about how many layers I’ll need to get through the day. Because I shoot backstage and sometimes on the street, I have to be practical.

What makes Fashion Week Australia different from the rest?

It feels fresh! There is so much new talent and only a handful of established designers, so the newbies have a chance to shine through. I love that!

Even though it’s (obviously) smaller than the big fashion weeks do you think that Fashion Week Australia still stands up to international cities in terms of design?

We don’t have big fashion houses like Gucci in Milan or Chanel in Paris, so of course we can't compare in that respect. But in terms of contemporary designers, we really stand out. Actually I have editors in all the different cities mention how much they love Australian designers. In Paris and London I’ve met so many Macgraw fans! And Lee Mathews is gaining a huge following overseas too. It’s really cool.

Did you attend Australian designers’ shows at other fashion weeks? What was that like?

Yes of course! Zimmermann is actually one of the biggest shows on the NYFW schedule. Everyone gets excited about it, and every street style photographer is outside. The production is next level: This season, they lined the entire show space with floral print, so it’s really cool to see what an influence they have. I always attend Dion Lee’s show too. He is so perfect for New York! His sleek designs feel so at home there. In fact, he’s a step ahead of most of the New York designers, in my opinion. They both make me so proud to be from this corner of the globe.

Being in other cities, could you get an idea of how the rest of the world considers Australian fashion?

Our designers are so highly regarded: There is such an excitement and an eagerness to find out about new labels from down under. Everyone I speak to perceives Australian fashion as fresh and innovative, which when they sit alongside international contemporary designers, is so true. Spending so much time overseas has really given me a new appreciation for our local talent.

Which fashion week did you enjoy most? Why?

You’ve probably already guessed… Milan! The labels are right up my alley, since I personally have such adoration for labels like Marco De Vincenzo and Vivetta. I also love their long-established brands such as Missoni and Marni. I feel so inspired and the content I leave with is so fun. Oh and PRADA. Need I say more?

What did you experience at an international Fashion Week that you hope to experience at Fashion Week Australia?

Locals representing local labels. I feel like girls in Sydney get swept up in wearing the latest international labels and forget what Fashion Week Australia is all about… supporting our local talent. So I’m interested to see what is happening outside the shows. I hope we can all make the most of this opportunity to show the world how beautiful our homegrown brands are!

Fashion Week Australia is arguably the most important event for the Australian fashion industry. While it might not garner as much international attention as fashion weeks in New York, London, and Paris, it deserves our attention and recognition for the platform it has created, and will continue to create, for rising Australian fashion designers.

Over the years, Fashion Week Australia has introduced a number of designers who have gone on to become household names both here and overseas. Camilla and Marc, Zimmerman, Ksubi, Sass & bide… each of these brands launched at Fashion Week Australia, so why has the collective attitude towards the event become so blasé? Based on these designers' renowned successes, Fashion Week Australia has empirically proven to be an amazing platform for up-and-coming designers; and that’s something that should be welcomed and celebrated.

If Australian fashion is going to continue to find success internationally, support starts at home. And with a lineup featuring so much widespread talent, who wouldn't want to get behind a new generation of design?

This year’s Fashion Week Australia has some of fashion’s biggest up-and-coming names to boast for 2018. From famous designers alice McCALL to Camilla, this year’s fashion week schedule is packed full of talent, including some noteworthy newcomers who are sure to influence fashion internationally in coming seasons. Take BLAIRARCHIBALD and Thomas Puttick, for example, both brands which have been awarded the prestigious Woolmark Prize. Or Deadly Ponies, the leather-centric accessories label started by New Zealander, Liam Bowden. And what about those baggy pants your favourite celebrities and Instagram influencers have been sporting lately? We have the buzzy I.AM.GIA to thank for that, which has built up a particularly impressive cult-like following after launching only last year.

Needless to say, there is a lot to look forward to this year at Fashion Week Australia; and while fashion weeks always beg the question of how relevant runways are in this digital age, the success stories leave us rest assured that it's a worthwhile endeavour. We first noticed it happening at New York Fashion Week, and now it’s safe to say that the entire world is becoming just as obsessed with Zimmermann as the rest of us already are in Australia. While the brand has been a long-time favourite of Australian style stars, including the likes of Margot Robbie, we’re starting to see the brand gain international popularity to a new extent. First, Chrissy Teigen stepped out in a Zimmermann dress last month, and now Blake Lively is trying out the style as well. 

In case you needed proof that Zimmermann makes amazing clothes, Blake Livley just provided it via Instagram. Posing in a ultra-flattering polka dot Zimmermann dress, colourful Louboutins and Jacqui Aiche earrings, the American actress looked as stunning as ever—giving us major dress envy. While the silhouette captured Zimmerman’s feminine vibe perfectly, the polka dot print worn by Lively was a little different than the brand’s florals we've grown so familiar with lately.

However, the fun print feels very relevant for 2018’s quirky-fun aesthetic. Let's hope we see a lot more where that came from. Since relocating from London to Sydney at the start of the year, I’ve been constantly surprised by the reaction of stylish Brits, mouth agape and eyes full of shock, when I tell them the piece they’ve stopped to ask me about is actually an Australian fashion brand. “That’s Australian?” is typically their response when I mention the St. Agni woven leather bag or DISSH dress, just to list a few, I’m wearing hail from down under.

I find this lack of insight, specifically a recognition that these established brands originated on Australia’s sandy shores, a testament to how our local talent transcends our somewhat isolated location to become global institutions in their own right. Australian designers have garnered such a cult following here in the United Kingdom because they’re creating pieces that the market has never experienced.

There is a sort of grittiness and dark romanticism that underscores designers who originate from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales because of the culture and history embedded here. In Australia, our overall lifestyle is quite nonchalant and relaxed, which seeps through to what we wear. So what happens when a fashion item with as layered a history as the corset circles back in vogue? From simple lace-up panels adoring cotton tops and dresses alike to the wide waist belts we saw everyone wearing over jackets and coats this winter, the corset’s modern influence is hard to ignore. It can’t be forgotten that the original garment was defined by its physically constricting shape and imposing social rigidity, but we do we draw a line between what women wore in 1618 and 2018? If you clicked into this post hoping for an answer to the question at hand—Can we wear corsets and still call ourselves feminists?—my initial conclusion is yes: We can indeed reconcile being an advocate for gender equality today while wearing a trend that references the corset’s constricting history.

Here’s the thing: Wearing corset shapes today is completely a choice, and we should celebrate the fact that this choice (all our sartorial choices, in fact) are wholly, unabashedly our own. It was not always the case for women’s clothing. While trends dictate what most people will gravitate toward at any given time, there’s no denying that the clothes we pick out each morning signal to the world our own personal values, not those of societal restrictions, and that is something to celebrate. As women, we were not always given this freedom, and there’s no example that illustrates this better than the corset.

“Any respectable woman had to wear it in public, to a dance, anywhere where propriety maintaining image was important,” according to Valerie Steel, director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “It was ultimately clothing for elite women, though even working women would strive to wear corsets.” The waist-defining structure became such a standard of dress that anyone who emerged in public sans corset was seen as existing on the fringes of society, Steel shared. This kind of immense social pressure to wear the garment is what makes it problematic.

Corsets weren’t just figurately oppressive, either. If you’ve made it through the first 20 minutes of Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ve understood the pain Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) endures while her maid cinches the laces of her bodice to impossibly tight lengths. Historically, corsets were either incorporated into the bodice or worn separately underneath a dress, according to Steele: “As the shape changes, you could say that it creates a smaller waist in comparison with the hips,” to put it lightly. By creating an unnaturally tiny waist, corsets created the illusion of an exaggerated hourglass shape, crushing bones and squeezing the air out of the wearer’s lungs, all for the sake of appearing “presentable” in public. (If you made it 30 minutes into Pirates of the Caribbean, you also witnessed Swann fainting as a result of that aforementioned corset.)

It’s safe to say that our collective society has progressed considerably since the era that produced the original corset. Why, then, did we decide to reach back in time and inform our fashion with the same structured bodices? I think when worn in 2018, the corset actually subverts its original exploitation of the female figure. So you’re wearing a waist-cinching belt over your blazer? That’s actually a power move, as this choice was made outside of pressure or obligation to uphold any standards set forth before you.

The bottom line is this: When you put on any garment and you choose to dress for yourself and only yourself, you are owning your power. If you are getting dressed with others in mind or forming yourself to a certain standard you’ve identified as necessary to adhere to, you’re inherently giving up that power. So let’s all stand behind our clothing choices fearlessly and without apology, shall we? This year more than ever, clothing can be political.

While New York Fashion Week is in full swing, it’s fair to say that for those of us not located in New York City, it can feel a bit... distant. Literally. Zimmermann practically wrote the book on how cool girls do modern romantic style, and for fall 2018, those who love the ruffled details and lush lace that’s become synonymous with the line will not be disappointed. They won’t be bored, either.

Titled “Unbridled,” the line’s theme didn’t go too literal as far as equestrian clothing, but it made a point that the Zimmermann girl is not just pretty dresses and frilly hems. Cool trenches and plaid separates were among the stars of the new collection while puffed sleeves and ruffled necklines remained strong, peeking from the tops and sides of sturdier leather jackets. To round the whole thing out, fanny packs, low-heeled boots, and plenty of figure-defining belts balanced the edge and elegance in equal measure.

The David Jones A/W 18 presentation was last night, and unsurprisingly, it drew some of Australia’s most fashionable together. Always a fair predictor of what the upcoming season has in store, models among the ranks of Jessica Gomes, Victoria Lee, Mali Koopman, and Jenella Powell showcased trends we can expect to see more of as the seasons change. The cost of rental is per weekend, and you can either take the dress home the same day, or book it for the future. The experience of trying on before renting ensures that your rented dress will fit, and the cost includes an appointment with a stylist who helps you pick the perfect look, accessories included!

The Volte

Sydney based company, The Volte, describes itself as, “a modern marketplace that allows you to invest in your style”. More similar to a sales platform (think eBay), The Volte is based around “Borrowers” and “Lenders”. If you’re only looking to rent, there are over 5,000 styles to borrow, ranging from about $60 to $2,000. One great feature of The Volte is the “shop by closet” option. If you find a lender whose style you love or whose clothes fit you perfectly, you can sort out their rentals among the thousands and continue renting from them. Perhaps the most exciting prospect of The Volte however, is the idea that you can also make money off of the clothes sleeping in the back of your own closet by renting them out as well. Once you sign up, it’s free to list clothes on the site. You’re only charged a 15% service fee if a piece actually rented, which is not bad considering that all you have to do is upload the item and be responsible for shipping.

Vintage shopping can be hit or miss, but in our experience, the best places are the ones you find when wandering down an unknown street in a foreign city, or those you learn about from word-of-mouth. A fashionable friend is always a good bet for uncovering hidden gems that are brimming with cool vintage finds.

Curious to find out best spots for vintage fashion in San Francisco, we asked Ashley Kane of Brunch on Chestnut to weigh in. She’s a San Francisco local and has got the whole California-girl style down. Think cool denim, leather slides, and straw basket bags. So when she told us her go-to spots for the perfect pair of worn-in Levi’s, band T-shirts, and even vintage Céline bags, we knew they were ones worth bookmarking. Simply Chic | Marina District

Simply Chic is at the top of my list to visit as it's so close to home and is beautifully maintained and organized for a vintage shop. You'll find treasures in the form of Cartier, Hermès, Tiffany's, vintage Gucci, Chanel, Celine, YSL, and more. I personally love checking out the bags and Hermès scarves. At Simply Chic, there's less digging and more debating on what to buy.

Wallflower | Mission District

I popped in recently and found myself in vintage jean heaven! The shop is quaint, cozy, and full of character. Here you'll find a curation of amazing denim, vintage tees, and accessories with a nod to the '60s and '70s.

Wasteland | Haight

This was the first vintage shop I bookmarked when I moved here eight years ago, and it's still a favorite. The shop is huge and packed to the brim with great vintage denim, tees, cocktail dresses, and accessories. I have scored a handful of awesome basic tees by Vince and Rag & Bone and found a perfect pair of Levi's.

No | Mission District

I love this place for its thoughtful curation. It's refreshingly small and organized so not overwhelming. I love that it feels highly curated, so it's much easier to find a few treasures to bring home. I love the vintage jewelry and always end up buying a couple of fun silk pieces and denim.

Since Australia is always slightly behind the rest of the fashion world, I've been eyeing winter street style images for at least six months now. Gilda Ambrosio and Giorgia Tordini have been right at the forefront of my Pinterest boards and have almost taken over my French style pins with their bold Italian looks. And since I grew up in Queensland, I may be more used to winters spent at the beach wearing shorts, but I'm a cold-weather girl at heart. Mainly for three reasons:

1. Layering is super stylish (and it's easier to be creative when putting outfits together).

2. I have fallen for the cosy hygge trend, which makes more sense in cooler months.

3. My favourite wardrobe items are coats, in particular the humble trench.

So if you can't tell by now I'm just a little bit excited about the current drop in temperature. Now's my chance to rug up in all the beautiful coats I've been spying on the runways. While a Sydney winter is still warm compared to other cities in the world, it does get its fair share of chilly days with bouts of miserable rain. For that reason, a good coat always comes in handy and I've rounded up nine of the best styles (some trending and some classics) that are timeless pieces you can wear year after year.

Trench

The classic, utilitarian treat coat is a wardrobe staple for women of all ages.

Denim

Denim is a comfortable and wearable versatile fabric that is suitable for warmer states (looking at you fellow Queenslanders).

For an adventurous style, you can depend on a printed coat to dress-up any simple outfit.

Metallic

Another bold choice is to go metallic. Look for parker styles that are more relaxed and slouchy instead of structured.

The brighter the better! Go all-out with this fun trend (you know you want to). 

Collarless

The collarless coat is a minimal and chic option for layering over quality staples. 

Plaid 

As the '80s are making comeback on the runway (and on the streets), it only makes sense to embrace the plaid print. 

Vinyl 

Another '80s trend we're seeing on the street is vinyl. (Giorgia Tordini wears this crocodile version effortlessly.) 

Oversized

Take cues from the street style crowd and wear an oversized coat off the shoulders, or slouched to the side.
