There are years in fashion when the landscape doesn’t just evolve—it tilts. This year has been one of them. In an era defined by creative-director musical chairs, an overabundance of fast fashion, and micro-aesthetics that morph faster than we can track, the industry has felt both restless and on the verge of something new, which is why, when it came time to assemble the 2025 Gen Z Best Dressed List, I turned to the people who understand this shifting terrain most intuitively: Who What Wear’s Gen Z editors. After all, who better to decode the year’s most era-defining looks than the cohort that can spot an archival John Galliano slip on a TikTok thumbnail at 0.2 seconds?

What emerged from our Slack messages and email threads was a portrait of a new generation of style stars rewriting the red carpet in real time. These are the actors, pop girls, and fashion darlings fearlessly mixing vintage with rising designers, or stepping into the ateliers of Chanel, Miu Miu, and other legacy maisons. They’re working with young, razor-sharp stylists who treat every appearance like a conversation—sometimes a love letter, sometimes a rebellion, but always as a means to make a statement and get attention.

There’s an electricity to Hollywood right now, a feeling that the fashion story is shifting scene by scene, outfit by outfit. It’s fresh, it’s unpredictable, and, frankly, it’s the most fun I’ve had covering red carpet style in years. If 2025 were the year Gen Z took over, 2026 is shaping up to be the year they set the entire rule book on fire—beautifully, unapologetically, and in extremely good shoes.

Lola Tung may have captivated us as Isabel “Belly” Conklin in The Summer I Turned Pretty, but its her carefree polish of screen which has skyrocketed her to the top of my best dressed list. Swinging between Y2K boho and unadulterated elegance with ease, her adventurous styling and keen eye for archival fashion has provided us with one of her moodiest, yet, chicest looks of the year. In a Fay toggle fastened jacket, sumptuous brown cargos and Adidas Samba OG in fresh cow print colour way, she seamlessly blends print with polish, classicalism with trend for a look that captures the very essence of the zeitgeist she hails from.

2. Iris Law

Whilst Iris Law's famous father continues to turn heads on the big screen, those dialled into the zeitgeist know she her fashion is just as meteoric. Her quintessentially British look blends lustrous textures with contrasting prints, kitschy accessories with cool shoes, to create bold looks which feel innately Iris. Every look feels like a love letter to her exuberant personality and we can't get enough.

Bella Hadid is Gen Z's fashion muse, in part thanks to her casual, low-key 'fits that the model has gone mega viral for over the last few years. While Hadid was largely absent for most of 2025 to focus on her health, the moments the star did pop up were well worth it—namely, this early 2025 appearance in SoHo in an all-black look complete with Saint Laurent sunglasses and a leather funnel-neck jacket. I personally like Hadid's style when it's a bit more casual since it feels more authentic to her, so this look ranks among my top five in the year.

I love Kylie and Timothée together, sue me! Since they don't often make public appearances together, I'm always locked into their style when they do—namely, during the latter half of the year when the couple was spotted at several New York Knicks games after the team made it to the NBA semi-finals. I'm zoning in on Jenner's outfit here, though. The youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner empire typically goes all out with her outfits, so to see her lean into a simple sporty windbreaker, wide-leg jeans, and a square watch for this specific look felt incredibly off-brand in the best way. I love how casual her style has become over the last year now that she's been brought out of her shell a bit more by Chalamet. Perhaps we'll get a full-on King Kylie–era style moment in 2026?

"Okay, okay. I know this look dropped in late 2024 technically, but its legacy carried well into 2025, and I am still thinking about it on a weekly basis. Addison Rae brought drama back to the VMA red carpet that has become overrun by 'quiet luxury' black evening gowns by wearing this tutu-and-bra combination that absolutely stole the show. If you're going to rebrand from a TikTok dancer to the Britney Spears of our generation, this is how you do it right. In my humble opinion, the evolution of Emma Chamberlain style is one worth studying. "When it comes to Gen Z style icons, Yara Shahidi's name is always going to make the cut. Her styling is always playful, eclectic, and colorful. Her look at Loewe's spring/summer 2026 show last month still lives in my head rent-free. I don't know how, but it taps into so many 2025 trends without feeling overdone or too trendy. From the mesh flats to the bowling bag to the anorak, it seamlessly merges all of these style personas while still feeling authentic to her typical style. The impact that the right handbag has on an outfit is undeniable, and when it comes to iconic styles, there are a few characteristics that turn a bag into an It bag.

First, of course, the brand brings instant recognisability along with the promise of quality and craftspersonship. Think Bottega Veneta, The Row and Celine, for example. Since the beginning of 2025, I’ve spotted a select number of styles, both new and old, being carried by what I consider to be some of the most fashionable celebrities, all of which I’m predicting will be the most covetable bags to invest in for 2025 and beyond. However, whilst they're on the rise for summer, I can guarantee that none of these handbags will feel outdated over the next few seasons or even in years to come. Unlike other clothing and accessories, handbag trends tend to move much slower and are, therefore, worthy investments that will remain relevant for a long time after their initial purchase.

Style Notes: Bottega's Ciao Ciao only launched last month, but is already making noise amongst celebs and fashion people alike. Available in two sizes and a range of wearable shades, the Ciao Ciao’s smooth leather finish makes it the perfect style for those who love the shape and function of the Andiamo but are looking for a more pared-back take. The black, cream and brown hues are timeless, and the pastel pink and fresh green are perfect for summer, but Naomi Ackie's chic burgundy iteration (pictured above) strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern.

Style Notes: Celine is known amongst elegant dressers as the go-to name for subtle yet impactful designs that are sure to turn heads, and the Camille 16 Soft bag is no different. From the spacious silhouette that makes it ideal for every day to the lack of obvious logos that ensures its versatility and timelessness, this is a bag made by minimalists for minimalists. Phoebe Dynevor opted for the classic black hue (pictured above), but you genuinely can't go wrong with any of the shades.

Style Notes: Tory Burch's Romy tote is a style that we've spotted non-stop on celebs over the last few months. In fact, we were seeing it so often that we decided we needed to try it out for ourselves, and trust me when I say that it does not disappoint. 5. Valentino Nellcôte 

Style Notes: 2024 was the year of quiet luxury and minimalism, but I'm predicting that 2025 will bring boho fashion to the fore once again. From the luxe suede we've been seeing on everything from trenches to loafers, studded belts and fringe detailing, the free-spirited aesthetic is set to make a comeback. There aren't many celebs who do boho better than Alexa Chung, whose unique style consistently influences fashion people. 6. Dior D-Journey

Style Notes: Beauty and utility combined, Dior's D-Journey is arguably the most versatile in the brand's collection. It's spacious and functional, making it ideal for everyday use, but its sleek and compact design means it could just as easily be worn to a dinner or evening event. I'd wear this dreamy style on my shoulder, however, I equally love how Elsa Hosk has adjusted the strap to turn it into a hands-free crossbody bag (pictured above), proving just how practical it is.

7. Gucci Horsebit 1955

Style Notes: The Gucci Horsebit 1955 clearly isn't a new bag, with its popularity spanning over 70 years. But that doesn't mean it won't continue to reign as one of the most coveted bags in 2025. In fact, at Gucci's FW25 runway show the iconic style was re-invented in the beautiful suede green shade (shown on Yara Shahidi) above to celebrate the bag's 70th anniversary. Although this version isn't yet available, there are still many different colours and patterns you can buy right now.

8. Hermès Birkin

Style Notes: Arguably the most coveted and undeniably the most popular handbag ever, the Birkin is going nowhere in 2025. The iconic bag has been lusted after by celebrities, fashion people and just about everyone since it launched in 1984. A symbol of wealth and status, it's no surprise that this style is still being spotted on celebrities, including Kendall Jenner, who was recently seen with an elevated suede iteration that feels fresh for 2025. Birkins are notoriously hard to get your hands on, so shopping on pre-loved sites like The Real Real is your best bet for getting your hands on one.

9. Saint Laurent Le 5 à 7 Shoulder Bag

Style Notes: Shoulder bags have been trending majorly since 2024, and Saint Laurent's Le 5 à 7 is one of the most sought-after styles on the market right now. Originally launching in 2021, the bag was inspired by the 1962 French film Cleo From 5 to 7 and exudes '60s glamour. From the gold logo hardware to the stylish elongated shape, celebs from Taylor Swift to Laura Harrier have proven this bag is the perfect evening accessory.

Style Notes: When it comes to The Row, the Margaux is undeniably the most popular style amongst celebs. However, knowing how difficult it is to get hold of (it's constantly sold out), I was glad to see one of the brand's biggest fans, Jennifer Lawrence, with a different style from the brand that's just as sophisticated as the Margaux but much easier to get hold of. This morning, I logged on to my laptop and started my day with a quick browse through some recent celebrity looks.

Having been inundated with Halloween outfits over the past few days, I was keen to refresh my inspiration boards with some chic outfit ideas that didn't involve any fake blood or prosthetic makeup. Luckily, my search coincided with the wash-up of images from the LACMA Art and Film Gala that took place over the weekend. With a guest list brimming with celebrity style icons, this fancy event was the perfect chance to get to grips with some of the partywear trends set to take off this winter.

Retaining a sophisticated energy whilst indulging in some playful silhouettes, this event was a treasure trove of event-dressing inspiration. Impressed by the looks seen throughout, I couldn't help but notice a glossy winter 2024 trend embraced by some of my favourite celebrities on the night.

Stepping out in a rich and lavish shade, Sofia Richie Grainge, Emily Ratajkowski and Yara Shahidi all opted for dresses in an elegant chocolate-brown colour. Wearing hers in a full-coverage, draped design, Richie Grainge let the expensive-looking nature of the colour dominate her evening ensemble. Styling her Saint Laurent gown with gold earrings, a layered gold choker necklace and a spattering of rings and bangles, her outfit is one I would more than happily replicate.

Also styling the dress trend, Ratajkowski stepped out in a vintage off-the-shoulder vintage Donna Karan dress from the brand's autumn/winter 1996 collection. Featuring a drop-waist design consisting of a satin top and a velvet skirt, the dress spoke to several major winter trends whilst appearing timeless and classy thanks to the decadent shade.

Appearing across a number of autumn/winter 2024 runway collections earlier this year, chocolate-brown dresses have been affirmed by designers as a major look for the season ahead. Seen throughout the offerings of Bottega Veneta, Dior, Courrèges, Gucci and many others, refined brown dresses have been on my radar ever since.

Styling a floor-sweeping number in an equally rich hue, actor Yara Shahidi wore a twisted-strap Gucci dress with a halterneck design for the evening occasion. Pairing hers with chic drop earrings and a small selection of rings and bangles, she employed the same less-is-more approach to brown party-dress styling as Richie Grainge and Ratajkowski.

As an editor, candidly, I must admit that I have a love-hate relationship with award season. Cartier doesn't just say it supports women; the iconic brand puts its money where its mouth is. Since 2006, the Cartier Women's Initiative has awarded over $3 million to female entrepreneurs and their businesses. For 2021, Cartier assembled a top-notch lineup for a three-day digital summit this week, culminating in the announcement of this year's eight laureates.

My favorite part of the summit was the inspiring conversation between Yara Shahidi and Erica Lovett, Cartier's head of diversity & inclusion North America. On the topic of representation in the media, Shahidi provided some background information about how she was raised and how her upbringing formed her approach to storytelling as an actress and producer. 

"The women in my family, both Iranian and Black, helped form environments of inclusivity," Shahidi said during the summit. "I come from a family of educators. I come from a family that revels in community. So having that as an example, I walked into the world feeling armed to take on anything that came my way. I was raised to believe that not even the sky's the limit. I had that example in front of me."

Shahidi went on to explain how she wants to take that sense of inclusivity that she experienced growing up and translate it to the projects she's working on. "If this is the impact that representation has had on me, how can we put that in media? It's not about creating superhumans, because we know that can be a trap as well. We know being villainized or heroized doesn't allow for humanity. So many times, especially if you're a woman of color, that's precisely what's lacking in people's understanding of us: the ability to have our entire humanity expressed."

In reference to the latter, the shorter cut hit the S/S 20 runways hard as designers from Versace to Balmain showcased a range of iterations including reimagined mini LBDs and sharp blazer dresses. I can’t recollect the exact moment I realized my hair texture was not represented in media, but if you identify as black, or bi-racial, you too have probably become acutely aware of this at some point. Unfortunately, for many communities of color, representation in media has always been myopic. Of course, it would be naive to not acknowledge that there have been strides when it comes to visible inclusion—we’ve seen the natural hair movement take off, and even the animated short film Hair Love won at the 92nd Academy Awards—but even with these commendable steps forward, we still must reckon with the fact that the television and films acclaimed by these institutions continuously fail to acknowledge the humanity of all stories, much less give them frequent accolades.

And while it should be noted that Parasite made history as the first foreign-language film to win the best picture of the year, let that not distract from the fact that only one actor of color was nominated across all categories or the fact that in the whole history of the Oscars, not one African American has been nominated for an Oscar in hair and makeup. When it comes to true inclusion in film and television we still have a lot of work to do—having Janelle Monáe perform isn’t enough. You need true recognition of artists of color in the form of nominations and award winners.

But I promise, my friends, not all is lost—there are three hairstylists who are moving the needle in Hollywood one hairdo at a time and creating the type of change we need to see in the industry. Ahead you’ll hear from Araxi Lindsey, Stacey Morris, and Carla Farmer on their experiences working on some of the most iconic films and television shows, along with why hair representation is so important, and what products they swear by. But first, a little about them…

Araxi Lindsey

Araxi Lindsey is a motion picture hairstylist who has been the department head for the television show Black-ish since the pilot. She’s also the personal hairstylist to a few celebrity clients including Tracee Ellis Ross. 

You were recently nominated for the Best Contemporary Hair Styling by the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. How does it feel to have your work on Black-ish be recognized? 

It feels great, but for so many years, I’ve always been comfortable being behind the curtain—so I didn’t like a lot of attention, or a lot of people talking to me, or people saying great things when I was younger. But now I’m at a point, and I guess also because I’m a mother, where I recognize it’s good to celebrate the good things, and it could be a testimonial for someone else, or inspiring to the youth, and I’m starting to understand that. It feels good to be a person who is admired or someone who is valued for what they love to do.

What’s the one hairstyle you’ve loved creating most on Tracee Ellis Ross? 

What I loved, and it was such a monumental moment was when Tracee won her Golden Globe in 2017, is when she had the long ponytail extension. I’ve seen people with the ponytail, but not as full and flowing as hers. I didn’t use a curling iron for that hair, I just washed and conditioned it, diffused it, and then incorporated her natural hair with the extensions. Tracee has never worn that type of hairstyle, so taking that journey with her, and introducing her to new things is exciting.

For women who are thinking of transitioning to their natural texture, what tips would you give them?

Have patience and confidence when going natural because it’s going to take time to get to the vision you have for yourself. Do not compare your natural-hair journey as you may not get the same results as someone else. Everyone has their own recipe for what they look like—you have to learn your own hair, listen to it, and trust it. But…

Confidence comes before anything else because we’re already taught that our hair isn’t the best looking, or it doesn’t look like the chosen girl on the red carpet—but our hair doesn’t look like that naturally, and her hair probably doesn’t look like that naturally either.

Make sure you're confident enough within yourself before you make the decision to go natural, because there will be an awkward stage, but once you allow it to do what it wants to do rather than beating it into submission, you’ll be happier with your results. Don’t think of it as this mountain that you have to climb barefoot; you just have to let your hair do what it wants to do and have the patience to get to where you want to be. Another tip for anyone who chooses to cut off the hair that isn’t natural is if you have about two inches, I would highly recommend getting individual braids, cornrows, or a healthy weave, and just wait until your hair turns to a desirable length, because you probably won't be able to see how your texture lays until you let it grow to four inches.

There’s still a lack of education around black hair; both how to actually style it, and how to speak about it in an informed, not implicitly biased way. How do you think we can change the way black hair is perceived within society and spoken about in mainstream media? 

I think that it shouldn’t be a thing—it’s natural for people that have it, so it shouldn’t be a new lingo, or some form of a safe word when speaking about black hair. It’s natural for people that have it; look at people’s natural hair for what it is, their natural hair.

Just embrace it in the same way that we embrace someone wearing lipstick or lipgloss.

For so long, we have been taught that our hair wasn’t celebrated or accepted because we had to blend into American society. You have people who don’t have textured hair, who felt like they couldn’t do it, so it’s easier for them to tell people with textured hair to conform to look like us—that has been the thing for years. Look like us, because we don’t know anything about that texture or braids… Get rid of that and wear this. And now people are saying, "I don’t want to do that. I just want to be myself.” I don’t think that people who don’t have the texture have to learn about it; you just have to accept it.

If you want to learn it, like in our industry, I think it’s easier and more empowering to just hire someone who is familiar with the hair texture. When I went to cosmetology school, no one cared to ask me, "Can you do braids? Can you style texture?” They don’t care about that; they care if you can do color, and cut, and that’s been embedded in us. But if you do care, then hire black hairstylists. 

When it comes to styling hair both on the set of Black-ish and offset for Tracee Ellis Ross, what goes into the thought process of choosing a specific hairstyle?

Normally I like to build character, so it depends on the character. For instance, Rainbow on Black-ish, she's an anesthesiologist, with multiple children (including the star Yara Shahidi), and a dog and a husband. She doesn’t seem like the kind of person to spend a lot of time styling her hair, or to spend a lot of time at a hair salon, so I tried to do practical hairstyles for this character who studies medicine and leads a busy life but has textured hair. When I did The Matrix for Jada Pinket Smith, I was shown an image and read the script, and I created what the directors and creators wanted. And so it’s more so for character building, but I do like to ask the actors what they feel or think about it—how do they perceive their character? I ask all those tedious little questions to the actors, to the writers, to the actors, and then I put my own spin on it. 

What products are your go-to products on set for Black-ish? Any go-to products you swear by for Tracee Ellis Ross? 

Well, I like to involve the actor, whatever the actor likes, I like. But when styling any natural texture, I am a true believer in oil (a nut or seed oil) and water and a skill for styling. As far as Tracee Ellis Ross is concerned, she loves her Pattern products, and we use them on- and off-set regularly.

Stacey Morris

Stacey Morris is a barber and hairstylist who started doing hair when she was 12 and was doing hair professionally by the age of 18. She’s worked on iconic shows like Black-ish, Martin, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In addition to her experience on-set, she has been a personal stylist to some of Hollywood’s most iconic leading men, including Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, and Anthony Anderson. 

You have recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hollywood Beauty Awards. How does it feel to have your work be recognized? What do you hope your work says to the world? 

I mean to be recognized for something you’ve been doing for so long of course feels amazing, and I’ve always been a humble person, so it was one of the most indelible moments in my career and also a milestone. I have been talked about, but never awarded, so to be awarded is amazing. I hope that my work is inspiring, and I look to be a role model for young people because literally I made something from nothing.

I picked up a pair of clippers and a comb and cut my way all the way to where my life and career are now.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from working on such a culturally important shows like Black-ish, Martin, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Scandal, and Girlfriends? 

I’ve learned that I have to put in 150% because when I started in this industry, it was a male-dominated profession. So being a woman, I had to prove myself—not just that I’m good, or even that I was the best, but it was very much, "Oh, she’s a great female barber,” but I can run with the best of 'em, whatever you choose to identify as. So it just groomed me to always put in at 150% and to not let what people may say or think affect me or my dedication to what I do. 

You’ve been the barber behind a lot of A-list men—including Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, and Diddy. Why is it equally as important for men to see their natural hair represented in the media? 

There’s still a lack of education when it comes to black hair, both how to actually style it and how to speak about it. But it’s important because showing the multifaceted styles that people with texture have, it represents those people, so when you see someone like you on-screen, you have something to identify with. It just changes male perspectives in grooming when they can see someone on-screen who looks like them and they have a certain haircut, or they look a certain way. And when it comes to education, for people who don’t have textured hair, I think it’s important, and I encourage my colleagues to teach classes and show the level of skill required to style textured hair, and teaching techniques, and teaching how we verbalize and speak about our hair and continuing to put it on-screen to really change it.

What was it like re-creating 70s-inspired hair for the film Dolemite is Our Name? Where did you draw inspiration from for the film? 

That was fun. I was born in the ’70s and was young but I still remember it. Carla Farmer and I did Dolemite together, and we drew inspiration from everywhere. We looked at our parents’ photo albums, we looked at our own photo albums, we did research, we watched films, and we would look at all these different styles and we were inspired that way. One of our main goals was to represent our culture’s hair realistically from that period—and it wasn’t just afros, and sideburns and bushy mustaches. You know, there were other sides to our hair. If a film says the ’70s, it so often won’t represent the wide array of hairstyles—so we went above and beyond for the film to make sure all the hair did, and not just for the textures of African American, but for all the other cultures too, because we didn’t just all wear one style during the time period.

Geographically, it could have been the same year, if you lived on the East Coast, Midwest, or West coast, styles were different, not to mention some people were more conservative, some people were inspired by the hippie side of things, some people were inspired by music bands back then, so we had to think about those things and really delve into the period to ensure we showed all the variant styles, but to also set an example for films to follow.

You’ve been leading the hair department for Coming 2 America. Can you give us any spoilers on what we can expect to see on-screen in terms of looks? 

You can expect to see African American hair represented in a couple of different cultures in a way we’ve probably never seen on modern-day TV. So it's the current day, so you have American, and then you have African, but within Africa, you have different levels of socioeconomic classes—you have royalty, townspeople, and peasants. So there are all these different levels, and sometimes people’s hair depends on their financial status, so we get to show all of that. We got to be creative, which is cool because the movie is a fantasy, and we’re in the current day, so we gotta pull it out of our heads and be free. As far as the African styles, you see typical stuff that people know, and we got to create there too because it’s fantasy but also because the hair now in Africa is innovative and is inspired by other countries, and television, and the internet, so it’s an open plane. You can expect to be entertained because the hair helps tell the story.  

For the men reading this, or the people who love the men in their lives, what products would you recommend they invest in for taking care of their natural texture? I hate to generalize products because not everything works for everybody or their lifestyle—it really depends. I love happy accidents, don’t be afraid to try something. But if you have a stylist, and take their suggestions and ask questions. That being said, I use Keracare shampoos and conditioners. When it comes to gels, I love Paul Mitchell. With guys for twist hairstyles, you need a sponge and black solution. For men with beards, oils and skincare products are essential.

Carla Farmer

Carla Farmer has been a hairstylist for over 40 years and has specialized in styling all hair textures in all the art mediums. Some of her most noteworthy work has been 13 Reasons Why, and Grey's Anatomy, Girlfriends as well as newer films like Sylvie's Love which was released at Sundance this year, and Coming America 2. 

Your work has been nominated for both Emmys and the Hair Stylist Guild Awards in the past, and Dolemite Is My Name had quite a bit of buzz around it. Why do you think your work as a stylist is important? And what do you hope your work says to the world? 

I never do this for an award, so it took me by surprise when Dolemite Is My Name got nominated and got so much press. It never crossed my mind that that was going to happen because that’s not why I do what I do. I do it because I love what I do and want to tell a story. However, when I got in that arena and saw the lack of representation, I knew moving forward that I needed to advocate for all of my friends to be of excellence, and to keep pushing what we do so that someone breaks through.

Because in the whole history of the Oscars, not one African American has been nominated for an Oscar in hair and makeup, which has nothing to do with ability. It does have something to do with the weight that black beauty has in comparison to the beauty standards you hold—and that’s off-kilter.

You’ve worked on everything from popular contemporary Netflix shows like 13 Reasons Why, to the indie film featuring Tessa Thompson set in the ’50s, Sylvie’s Love. For you, what goes into the process of creating looks for all these different types of characters? And how do you approach not only varied hair textures but styling hair for different time periods altogether?  

The most important thing to me is research—even if it’s current. I just finished working on Coming to America 2, and it had a prototype, so I researched the original movie and then compared it to what it would look like now. And in that comparison, I ended up researching the afro-punk scene; it’s not mainstream yet, but I so admired that scene, so I drew a lot of my inspiration for that film from that subculture. Versus, with a show like, 13 Reasons Why, that also had a template, and we followed what the directors wanted. But overall we were able to show hairstyles that weren't seen in previous seasons on that show and were able to push the direction of hairstyling in a way that wasn’t pushed before because there wasn’t a black hairstylist before. 

How, in your opinion, do film and television contribute to upholding Eurocentric beauty standards? What power do hairstylists hold to combat upholding these standards? 

The film industry holds so much power in the visual, and how we perceive each other, so when you see a lot of films about slavery and oppression, I appreciate those films, and I feel like they’re apart of the narrative, but I will be so happy when we can have more of narrative of a person who is living an everyday life, and they happen to be black, but they don’t have to face so much hardship just because they’re black. That’s why I’m so proud of this movie we did, Sylvie's Love. It’s a romantic fantasy set during the Civil Rights Movement, but its focus is insulated, and it’s a reminder that black people were, and have been, just out here flourishing and living their lives. I feel when we can start telling these stories, there will be a better picture of the whole black experience, and it’s not always just being shot by a cop. These things happen, and they’re horrible, and they need to be told, but it’s not encompassing of the whole experience. We need to balance it with the beautiful stories that happen also.

We need to see the full humanity of being black on-screen.

What has been one of the projects you’ve been most proud to work on and why? 

Thus far, Dolomite has been the most fun and fulfilling project I’ve done thus far. It just was a group of amazing artists, and many of us grew up in the ’70s, so it was really fun to be able to re-create that era with an authentic eye. Of course we did research, but we also knew how things should look, so it was very rewarding, and I got to hire a lot of my friends in the business and that was the other part of it that made it so great. 

What are the hair products or tools you always have on set with you? 

It really differs from project to project, but I always utilize a great blow dryer, and that’s the most important universal tool. But I used Eco gel on everything.

When two A-list couples honeymoon in the Maldives, you can bet our interest is piqued. Gwyneth Paltrow and Sophie Turner both spent their special trips at Soneva properties in the Maldives, which immediately went to the top of our travel wish lists.

Yara Shahidi went on a very Instagrammable vacation to the Belmond Cap Juluca in the Caribbean island of Anguilla. Excuse us while we go buy a striped bikini and daydream about Anguilla.

Paris is the chicest city in the world, and Le Bristol is the chicest hotel in the city. Convinced yet? Olivia Palermo and her husband, Johannes Huebl, certainly know that this is the top spot in the City of Light. 

Next, these four summer prints just earned me gobs of compliments. 

You don't need me, the news or a thermometer to confirm that it's hot out there. We Brits love to talk about the weather, and usually we're prepared for all eventualities, but this heatwave has left us in a bit of a pickle (who else is melting on public transport and consuming too many Soleros?). Let's just say 35-degree weather is not our comfort zone, so what is one to wear?

It’s no secret that celebrities have a penchant for wearing designer items. While we love luxurious, high-end fashion as much as the next person, it's always refreshing to see our favorite celebs steps out wearing something affordable. After all, the so-called "investment pieces" that we spot them wearing are just that—investments. They're items that we plan and save for; they may be expensive purchases, but they're not necessarily spontaneous purchases. We keep track of any affordable and celebrity-approved pieces we find for days when we feel the need to expand our wardrobe without minimizing our bank accounts.

Lately, many of those affordable and celebrity-approved pieces that we’re seeing are swimsuits… no surprise there; it is mid-July after all. Celebs like Selena Gomez, Ashley Graham, Kylie Jenner, and more, have all been spotted wearing swimsuits that are $150 and under. Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi posted this picture of her mid-nap to Instagram, tagging J. Crew as the brand behind her bright yellow bikini. While the yellow color, which is called "burnished citron" is currently only available in size large on the brand's website, there are a whole host of other colors to choose from (I have the exact same suit in red, and it's one of the comfiest swimsuits I've ever worn). 

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez wore a $40 one-piece while on vacation in Mexico. The bright red suit is from Krahs Swimwear, which is a brand that was started by Gomez's friend Theresa Mingus. Gomez even helped design a swimsuit, which she debuted in an Instagram post last May.

Emily Ratajkowski

If you follow Emily Ratajkowski on Instagram, you're well-aware that she owns her own swimsuit label, called Inamorata. While she posts pictures of herself wearing these bikinis often, the one she seems particularly drawn to is a stringy brown-and-white polka dot suit called Las Olas. 

Alessandra Garcia Lorido

Alessandra Garcia Lorido might be the daughter of famous actor Andy Garcia, but the model and actress is a star in our own right (and her fashion-forward Instagram is proof of that). Here, she wears a hot pink tie-front bikini with mismatched blue bottoms while on vacation in Florida. The suit comes from ASOS. Buying both pieces will only put you out $27!). 

Khloé Kardashian

Khloe Kardashian took baby True with her on vacation to Turks and Caicos last May. During her vacation, she posted multiple pictures of herself lounging beachside in a hot pink bikini, which is from White Fox Boutique, a brand that many of her sisters have been spotted wearing in the past. 

Kylie Jenner

Speaking of Kylie, the beauty billionaire posted her own swimsuit pictures on Instagram a few months back. In this picture, she wears a neon green bandeau set from the aforementioned White Fox Boutique, which matches the one-pieces worn by both Jordyn and Stormi. 

Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham's Swimsuits for All partnership is still going strong. Here, she poses in one of her designs from the collaboration. The set features a scoop-neck top, a high-waisted bottom, and a dangling body chain that can be worn on the top or the bottom as you wish. 

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa is a fan of a printed one-piece swimsuit (that's if her recent Instagram posts are any indication). The one she wears in this picutre is from the brand Lysander Swim, and it's covered in dark green leopard print...If it's good enough for Dua Lipa, then it's good enough for us.

As one of the most prominent voices of Gen Z, Yara Shahidi's incredible style is entirely connected to her political identity. Everything she wears is equal parts fabulous as it is significant. "Wearing what you want is a powerful political statement," she told us earlier this year. "Fashion is a reclamation of identity."

On top of her own outspoken political activism, she's a Chanel girl; she's starring one of the summer's major romantic films, The Sun Is Also a Star; and, of course, she's the lead on Grown-ish, the spin-off of Black-ish, where we first came to know her. There's simply nothing she can't do.

We've had our eye on her style for the past few years, but recently we've been obsessed with every outfit she wears. Working closely with her stylist, Jason Bolden, she breezily dons loud patterns, colours and silhouettes. Shahidi is unafraid to try out trends straight from the runway and will often wear an OTT piece with simple accessories.

With each uniquely inspiring look, we've fallen in love with the way she pulls off creative styling tricks. In a similar way, she has become a positive political voice for her generation. By guiding and not preaching, Yara is leading us by example into a way of using fashion as an authentic reflection of one's personal beliefs.

“It's hard to separate the personal from the political,” says 18-year-old actress Yara Shahidi. Christened by Teen Vogue as “one of the most prominent Generation Z political voices,” the Grown-ish star’s activism is not just her social justice commentary on Instagram or her hand in movements like the Eighteen x ’18 campaign encouraging young voters to show up to the midterm polls. For Shahidi, having a political voice comes down to the very fabric she puts on her body—the monochrome Melody Ehsani tracksuits she labels her signature; the Pyer Moss men’s leisure suit she’s wearing for today’s photo shoot (a shamrock-colored number printed with the faces of an African American father and his kids). “Wearing what you want is a powerful political statement,” Shahidi asserts. “Fashion is a reclamation of identity.”

A few days out from the turn of 2019, Shahidi is wearing her identity on her sleeve more visibly than ever. The focal point of Shahidi’s look today is her braids. Having taken an hour to install, the twists pour a proud 63 inches from the crown of her head down to the concrete floor of this pristine Venice rental house with such natural ease that it’s as if they were always there, like Yosemite Falls, or a chandelier in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Barefoot, Shahidi arranges them neatly around her green silk trousers as we sink into a low gray couch for our interview, two rooms away from the music, cameras, and dozen or so people making sure today turns out beautifully. “I can get people’d out sometimes,” Shahidi says with affection.

If I had experienced a year anything like Shahidi’s, I’d be all people’d out, too. In the summer, Shahidi shot The Sun Is Also a Star, a romantic drama film based on the best-selling YA novel and set for release May 17, 2019. She also currently stars on the hit new Freeform series Grown-ish (a spinoff of ABC’s Black-ish), which follows Shahidi’s character Zoey Johnson as she navigates the tribulations of early college life. Meanwhile, Shahidi balances her own real-life course load as a first-semester Harvard undergrad.

Yara and Grown-ish’s Zoey are doing freshman year very differently, however. Shahidi, who received a college recommendation letter from Michelle Obama and finished high school with a nearly flawless GPA, intends to major in African American Studies and Sociology, and she fulfills her credits when she can between shooting schedules. Shahidi has very little room to stumble, which is not the case for her plucky, sometimes foolhardy Grown-ish character.

“One of the perks of my job is that I get to live an alternate life with no consequences,” Shahidi says with a smile. “So my character can date some guy or be on Adderall temporarily, and Yara is not affected because I’m just eating sugar pills. It’s a privilege, especially as a teenager figuring out who I am, to be able to live out such an extreme opposite.”

Shahidi does have one minorly rebellious goal for 2019, though: her first tattoo. She’s considering getting a memorial tattoo, maybe at the end of January, she tells me, in honor of the civil rights movement—a date on her wrist. Indeed, even when Shahidi acts like a regular teenager, it’s both personal and political.

Acknowledging the privilege to express her viewpoints, especially knowing that others are listening, comes naturally to Shahidi, who was raised in a multicultural family she describes as “very socially engaged.” Even when she was a little kid, Shahidi’s parents invited her to articulate and debate her political stances; so now, at 18, she boasts a lexicon consisting of pithy buzzwords like “quantifiable action” and “performative activist.” It’s like encountering a younger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“My parents have always wanted to know what I thought and why, which I think is rare,” she says. “Oftentimes, when you’re young, you’re told to stay quiet, and then when you become an adult, you’re all of a sudden supposed to have your mind made up about the world. But you never got that clumsy growing-up period of figuring out the right words to express what you want or need.”

As Shahidi’s celebrity grows, she’s using it more and more to expand the speaking floor. “Part of the purpose of me sharing how I feel is to empower other people to realize that their opinions are worthy of being shared,” she explains. “It’s normalizing that idea of civic engagement.”

Looking forward, Shahidi has big activism plans for 2019, mostly involving live events and salons aimed at young adults, encouraging hype for the 2020 election. When asked if she’d ever like to run for public office herself (after all, she has the disposition for it), she says, “I don’t know. I think I would love to run a think tank or something,” that being an organization funding bias-free social science. “Oftentimes we create social science to back up the political rather than social science guiding the political, which means that a lot of what we receive is already extremely jaded,” Shahidi explains. “Like, even pharmaceutical companies’ clinical trials are usually conducted with white men. There’s so much information missing about how pharmaceuticals affect other groups of people because there’s no inclusivity. So I want to help create something that could help break that cycle. I don’t know exactly what that would look like yet.”

Other 2019 goals for Shahidi? Ironically, to work on prioritizing her own well-being before concerning herself with the well-being of others, let alone the entire country. To zip up her own tracksuit before helping the person next to her, so to speak. It’s easy to forget, even for Shahidi herself, that she’s only 18; and even though her social and political consciousness is higher than anyone else’s on this set, as a child star on the cusp of adulthood, she’s still learning how to do some practical things, like take care of herself. 

“Oftentimes I find it easier for other people to take care of me,” Shahidi admits, petting the end of one of her braids. “I’ve been privileged to have a group of people surrounding me whose opinions align with mine, but sometimes I’ll become physically uncomfortable trying to speak for myself, like, Hey, guys, I’m exhausted! Which is not something I’ve chosen to make anybody else’s life harder. But there’s pressure to just keep going. You work 70 hours a week, and you tell yourself, oh, it’s cool. I’m an overly pragmatic person, so there are moments where I go into a robot mode. I’ll say, Well, theoretically this is what will be best for the greater good, versus This is what I want. So I’m trying to get better at that.”

Here’s to a 2019 full of epic braids, tracksuits, civic engagement, more sleep, and the courage to speak for yourself.
