It feels as though as soon as September arrived, so too did autumn. After months of bare arms and light layers, we've been plunged into cooler temperatures almost overnight, and our wardrobes are calling out for us to shift our summer wares for autumn icons. In response, I immediately looked pulled out my coats and jackets that were last seen in late spring, and concluded I was ready for something new to accommodate the months of cold weather on the horizon. With longevity in mind, high quality a must and sleek style a prerequisite, I naturally turned to Whistles.

Style Notes: Whilst I could go on and on about the timelessness of a trench coat, or how versatile it is to pair with day looks as well as elevated evening ensembles, I have to talk about how good this coat feels. Made from a viscose and polyester mix, the fabric is incredibly soft to the touch, so the coat is also extremely comfortable, and it drapes beautifully. Here, I'm wearing a 6 (one down from my usual size) as the coat is oversized, but with a knit underneath my regular size would be perfect.

The beige shade is my favourite for its nod to the classics, but Whistles knows we all have different preferences, offering this trench in black and khaki too. Even though I'm 5'2", I love the length on me, but if you prefer a shorter style, both the beige and khaki colourways come in petite versions too.

2. THE CLEAN BONDED LEATHER JACKET

Style Notes: The Whistles Clean Bonded Leather Jacket has become iconic within fashion circles. Taking on the leather jacket in a pared-back, minimalist way, it has a simplified shape and refined design that gives it an enduring elegance. The oversized silhouette further adds to its style credentials, ready and waiting to be layered up with chunky knitwear or simply worn with a T-shirt, as I have here.

Many of our editors own this jacket, and we unanimously agree that it's best to size down. Like the Riley Trench Coat, the Clean Bonded Leather Jacket comes in three shades—black, brown and khaki, and the black also comes in a petite option too. Here, I'm wearing the size small in petite.

3. THE JULIA WOOL DOUBLE FACED COAT

Style Notes: A wool coat is destined to be worn on repeat from autumn, through winter and into spring, if the British weather is anything to go by. Covering three of the four seasons, this is a smart piece to invest a little more in. It takes a special design to bring together ease and elegance in one combination, and the Julia coat does just that.

The relaxed shape is primed to layer over even the chunkiest knits, supporting easy day looks like mine and ready to step up to the challenge should you be heading to the office or an evening event. The silhouette is again oversized, and as it's already flying off the shelves, I was only able to get my hands on the size medium, but I've already checked online for my preferred size, small.

Ah, the great British high street. Over the years—especially the past, say, five to ten years—there's no denying that the high street has faced some turbulent times. The rise of online shopping already seemed like an insurmountable challenge to overcome without the onset of a deadly virus that caused an unprecedented shutdown of physical shops and that all-important foot traffic. All of this, alongside our increased awareness of fast fashion and the vastly important consideration of its negative impact on our environment.

Whether the industry is ready or not, the time for the high street to make some significant changes, level up and reinvent itself has come. Of course, for the giants of the UK high street, that process was never going to be quick or easy, and the challenges these brands face are without a doubt ongoing. However, there are some smaller-scale and more under-the-radar brands that have already seized this opportunity for renewal; even some newer names have managed to break through the traditionally static high-street landscape in the UK and emerge thriving in recent years to serve us consumers in more modern and relevant ways. 

Enter what we're coining the high, high street. This is a new class of brands that appear to be carving out a more boutique-feeling, premium space on the high street. These brands are catering to those looking to shop more responsibly, with enough disposable income to consider a "buy less but better" approach. As a result, amongst them, you're likely to find more of a focus on sustainable practices and the quality of fabrics. And whilst we'd still class them as "relatively" affordable, with the increasingly expensive mid-range and luxury market for context, they do also come with (mostly justifiably) higher price points than you might find at say, your H&Ms or Mangos

We're certainly not in a position to say all of these premium high-street brands are thoroughly sustainable. Some, like Massimo Dutti (a sister brand to Zara under the Inditex conglomerate umbrella), are still guilty of fast-fashion practices. But, there is at least a common thread across all of these brands' collections: a move towards fewer, tighter edits of more classic, anti-trend designs using better quality materials like leather, organic cotton and cashmere that are designed to be worn for many years, not simply to cater to a given season's microtrends. This approach alone has upped their appeal in the modern landscape, and in our opinion, is the crux of what sets these brands apart and makes them feel wholly more elevated than the average high-street shop in 2024; especially at a time when quiet-luxury, classic minimalism and timeless pieces are so pertinent in the fashion industry as a whole. 

So, which brands are we talking about exactly? Well, some, like Jigsaw, Whistles and Reiss, you'll probably be familiar with as recognisable UK high-street labels. You might even be a little surprised to hear about their inclusion in our list, but the numbers don't lie. According to Retail Gazette, Jigsaw's sales "surged 19% in its year to the end of January... [in] a stark turnaround for the brand, which had been struggling even before the pandemic amid a tough mid-market fashion sector". Reiss' FY23 sales are expected to be up +25% compared to 2022, in a record year for sales and profit.

Then, there are newer and lesser-known brands like Aligne which bravely launched in 2020 but already count the fashion industry's most stylish insiders as staunch supporters; Hush which had a refresh last year that put it firmly back on the fashion radar, and US-based Reformation which has recently expanded to five bricks-and-mortar stores on our soil.

In its own words, "Aligne is the brand that has been missing from the great British high street for so, so long." And we're tempted to agree. Launching only four years ago in 2020 (brave, very brave), Aligne already counts a wealth of fashion-industry insiders as fans thanks to its luxe, high-end feel but accessible (and more conscious) approach to design. Editors and influencers alike are all vying to wear the brand, and perhaps most importantly, to recommend it to their friends and audiences—a feat that can often take young brands years to achieve.

Who What Wear UK commerce writer Florrie Alexander says, "Aligne has become a brand that I keep coming back to for a few reasons. It manages to mix elevated design with affordable price points and gives real transparency on how the pieces are made." Our editor-in-chief Hannah Almassi is a fan of how the brand's classics are both "practical and joyful", and certainly never boring. "The female-led, East London–based label is beloved for its unique, high-quality take on core wardrobe essentials. Mindful and transparent in its production, Aligne also manages to provide accessible price points and fantastic design credibility," she says.

You won't find any excessively large collections here, just tight edits of statement-making essentials that you'll undoubtedly reach for again and again. A handful of new pieces drop weekly (and regularly sell out), so you're going to want to keep an eye out.

Hush may have been around for the last 20 years but this season, the London-based brand founded by Australian Mandy Watkins had a relaunch of sorts that has put it firmly back on our radar. It wasn't a particularly groundbreaking overhaul (take that as a positive), but more of a reimagining. The brand has doubled down on its DNA of effortless, laid-back and most importantly, wearable style, but the designs and campaign imagery feel undeniably fresh and modern.

Like a lot of the brands on this list, Hush is focusing on versatile pieces that can be worn season after season—a perfect black tailored coat or a crisp white T-shirt—but these timeless buys now come with subtle, on-trend twists. The denim is slouchy and wide-leg, the tailoring is relaxed and the silhouettes are just oversized enough to add that "cool" factor to what could otherwise be considered "boring" basics. 

This renewed brand identity (and honestly, the chicness of the new designs), has had so many influencers signing up to work with the brand—a smart way to show off how the modern woman can style the brand's dressed-down buys for 2024 and beyond. Who What Wear UK social media editor Joy Ejaria is also a fan of how wearing Hush means not having to sacrifice style when dressing for real life. "Comfort for me always outweighs style, but I recently discovered a brand that merges the two, and now my wardrobe is full of expensive-looking items from Hush. I personally love how Mandy Watkins brings her laid-back Aussie aesthetic to a brand that still undoubtedly has that cool London energy."

And it all comes within that more affordable high-street price bracket, which is what we call a win-win.

Despite reports of Jigsaw struggling to maintain its foothold in an extremely competitive mid-market industry pre-pandemic, the brand has defied all odds, and rather than fold under the pressures of the past few years, it has well and truly stepped up its game—both on the business end by smartly pulling away from stores and expanding online when it was necessary, and on the design side too. 

The collections are undeniably strong these days, full of really chic investment pieces from wool coats to forever tailoring that rival those from mid-luxury brands with much higher price points. The campaigns are elegant but with a modern ease and an aspirational polish that makes us want to dress entirely in Jigsaw, just to be one of those put-together women. And whilst other brands on this list are keen to stick to timeless neutrals in this moment of quiet luxury and new minimalism, Jigsaw uses these as a base but has the confidence to experiment with expensive-looking colour palettes and even prints—from rich burgundy to lime green and zebra.

This isn’t something we editors usually love to see on the high street as it can date (and cheapen) a collection instantly, but Jigsaw pulls it off with ease in a move reminiscent of what’s been happening on the most exciting designer runways of late—think Matthieu Blazy’s Bottega, Maximilian Davis’s Ferragamo and Sabato de Sarno’s new Gucci. High praise, indeed.

Whilst Massimo Dutti may belong to Zara's Spanish-owned parent company, the difference between the two brands couldn't be more palpable. Where Zara leans into the buzziest microtrends of the moment, aiming for TikTok-viral fame and flash-in-the-pan sellout success, Massimo Dutti leans away from them and instead towards a much more luxe, elevated approach. Even stepping into one of its stores on London's Oxford Street feels like a wholly premium experience in comparison. We'd still advise you to be mindful of checking fabric constructions for any sneaky polyester mixes that (sadly) can still come with being a global high-street brand.

But on the whole, you'll find a lot more transparency and respect for quality and fit when shopping at Massimo Dutti, which is something that has garnered the respect of fashion people and influencers like 

Monikh Dale and Emily Wells, who are often seen wearing the brand alongside luxury designers like The Row. 

Rebecca Rhys-Evans, our senior fashion and beauty editor for branded content, says the brand is her absolute go-to for elevated basics. "From its cashmere knits and tailored wool coats to the excellent selection of leather footwear and accessories, everything from the cuts to the colour palette is spot on. This season, I invested in a pair of knee-high black leather boots with a pointed toe and kitten heel, and whenever I wear them I lose count of how many comments I get.

"The thing is, where other high-street brands can look designer from a distance, I always feel that up close they fall short and don’t have the same longevity. However, when I wear Massimo Dutti, people will often mistake the garment for being Khaite, Toteme or The Row. What better compliment is there?!"

Reformation was born out of Los Angeles back in 2009, and was originally a vintage shop that became a brand focused on creating its own designs with a much more sustainable approach than its peers at the time. 15 years later, and Reformation is still the benchmark for fashion brands looking to be both more environmentally responsible and commercially (very) successful. The first UK store opened in 2019 and as well as a strong online presence (thankfully, those pesky import taxes have been done away with), the brand now has five stores across London's most popular shopping streets. 

It's no secret that Reformation has a wealth of celebrity fans, especially stateside (Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez are both regularly spotted in the brand—we're not talking Z-listers here), but its famously pretty dresses, vintage-inspired denim and impressively inclusive offering (it has long carried both extended sizing and petite collections) have won over the British fashion crowd too.

Reformation's sustainable credentials (it doesn't claim to be perfect, but it's certainly much more committed and transparent than its premium high-street peers) genuinely set it apart. The brand is climate-neutral certified, with the goal of sourcing 100% of its fabrics from recycled, regenerative or renewable materials by 2025. The yearly sustainability report offers even more transparency, and it's this approach, as well as the premium quality of its pieces, that justifies its higher price points.

Reiss has always occupied a premium space on the British high street, and it continues to provide us all with beautifully designed clothing that will live through decades without losing its appeal. From occasion dresses to perfect camel coats and office-ready tailoring, it’s still rare to find this level of elegance whilst pounding the pavements of the high street (which is probably its key to success).

If that wasn’t enough to get us through the door (and checking out online), last September, Reiss launched Atelier—a premium collection doing pretty much what it says on the tin. These are limited-edition pieces crafted in the brand’s London-based, in-house atelier from seriously luxurious fabrics (predominantly sourced from Europe), using intricate techniques and impeccable attention to detail. Clearly, the demand for more bespoke luxury on the high street is alive and well. 

Whilst the Atelier collection feels even more timeless than the main line (you’d expect to be wearing these pieces forever at their elevated price points), there's also a conscious modernity to it; enough to win over A-list celebrities like Selena Gomez who, despite having her pick of just about any label, chose to wear the crowning Atelier collection piece—a white maxi coat—on a recent outing. We’re already excited to see what the brand has in store for us next.

The ever-reliable quality and its refusal to play to trends that don't have longevity are just two of them. Over the past few years, I've had something of a style evolution and it's been spurred by colour. While I've known what shapes and styles I like to wear for quite some time, I realised that although I appreciate monochrome outfits, I was craving warmer tones. I've always been a lover of neutrals but as I've gotten older, I've realised that I don't necessarily want a wardrobe devoid of colour. I found myself gravitating to earthy and warm hues that still feel wearable and neutral, especially on darker skin. Between espresso, warm tobacco shades and rich cocoa (akin to melted chocolate), brown has been one of the leading colours on the runway along with ochre. After spending the past year drawn to every coffee-hued item in sight, I've come to realise that brown has pipped it to the post as my new favourite colour. I've since come up with many brown outfit colour combinations, and ways to incorporate this trendy shade into my wardrobe. While it may demand more thought than say, black or white, there are options aplenty and I'm so inspired. Winter styling is the complete antithesis to other seasons, as the cold weather takes over we veer towards deeper hues, jewel tones and steadfast items that have met the style and warm criteria over the years. However, you aren't alone if you too lack inspiration when outfits are swallowed whole by oversized coats. This time of year is all about layering and outfit combinations. When it comes to choosing which dresses to style with boots, the options span from long-sleeved dresses to bodycon numbers and even minis. Jumper dresses are also a very popular winter addition, in various cuts — from high neck to raglan styles you can cinched in at the waist (there's more on that later).

We're stepping into the most wonderful time of the year (arguably), and no, I'm not talking about Christmas. I’m talking about autumn and winter fashion—the layers, the coats, the coffee tumblers as outfit accessories—all of it. I kept my eyes eagerly peeled on the incredible street style that debuted last week at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and it for sure satisfied the part of me that missed seeing leather, blazers and chunky Chelsea boots parading the streets. I’m definitely sad to be waving goodbye to our brief (and frankly elusive) summer, but the autumn's fashion prospects are too good to not be at least a little bit excited about.

And although I feel truly in my element just after the summer months, it's admittedly hard to judge which summer items you’ll be hanging up until next year, and which you can put back to work to carry you through the next few months. This year we've seen some unpredictable summer trends emerge (Y2K disc belt, anyone?) alongside all-rounders that have stuck around. So which trends will pass the test during this next seasonal switch-up? Well, fear not. I’ve done my research and picked out four quintessential summer trends that will also blend seamlessly into autumn. Luckily, we won't be packing away our summer rotation in a hurry. 

1. SUMMER LINEN

Style Notes: Linen dominated this summer, with both elegance and practicality at its core. Whilst the climate simply won't allow us to adorn breezy linen throughout all autumn and winter, a linen jumpsuit will give you plenty of layering opportunities, with a subtle nod to summers gone. Style a linen all-in-one with a long sleeved T-shirt, high-neck shirt or jumper to keep you balanced as the weather cools off. Go one step further and bring your linen to the front of your wardrobe next season by pairing it with some pointed-toe or sock-fit boots and a leather bag.

Style Notes: Loose, cargo-style trousers are definitely here for the long haul. Offering a casual utilitarian flare to any outfit, we just need them in slightly heavier fabrics such as denim during the colder months. Until it gets really chilly, autumn calls for an understated in-between. Enter, cotton cargos. Not quite light enough for peak July sun yet not too cosy, these are a staple for summer-adjacent looks. Swap out your breezy tee or cropped tank for a jumper and fitted T-shirt, and sub the sandals for some light trainers. Just throw on a long duster or trench and you have yourself the autumn perfect errand-running uniform.

3. BALLET FLATS

Style Notes: It's going to be hard to escape ballet flats very soon. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that they've managed to sneak their way into every corner of the fashion world. Although I've definitely grabbed a couple of pairs for myself, I'm still not fully on board with the mesh flat-shoe trend. I would hate to see the humble ballet flat disappear as autumn grows close though, especially as they really don't have to.

Flats that prioritise structure—allowing for practicality in the cooler, rainier months—yet still retain their dainty elements are a must-have as we enter autumn. Paired with a perfect pair of jeans and a chic mini trench, this trend surprisingly has the potential to carry us through the transitional months and beyond. Straight, minimalistic shapes are the key to showcasing your flats in autumn. Wear them with a sleek trench and accessorise with delicate textures and a small handbag to complement the lightness of your flats.

4. ROSETTES AND CORSAGES

Style Notes: The sheer fact that this '80s embellishment has re-emerged with such flair this season is almost enough to confirm its timeless quality. Whether it be a cute addition to your outerwear, an elegant choker or a chic touch integrated into a sleek dress, the classic, three-dimensional corsage has a hold on celebrities, bloggers and Gen Z alike.

An ode to a blooming spring and bright summer, I see a lot of room for corsages in the coming months, with opportunities to adopt a black or brown leafy rosette to represent the season. Layer a long-sleeved top under an appliquéd slip dress or attach a corsage to your autumn denim. I'd also suggest wearing the trend with fluid silhouettes such as silk so as not to overshadow the appliqué. Fitted items will also help to make your outfit less bulky and draw all eyes to the rosette.

Every so often, a piece of clothing comes along that gets hearts racing across the entire fashion industry. Sometimes, it's a runway look that goes viral, meaning it's probably out of reach for most of us, and sometimes, it's a more accessible high-street buy that proceeds to pop up in the wardrobes of all the most stylish people. Whistles' Bonded Leather Jacket is one of these pieces.

Of course, the real leather makes it an investment piece at £449, but if you're considering investing now is that time. Its clean, cool, structural lines; buttery-soft, luxurious texture, and classic-wardrobe-staple qualities (it doesn't get more timeless than a black leather jacket, does it?) make it a very wise investment indeed.

So much so that the style sold out pretty instantaneously when it first launched in black last year, and those lucky enough to have snagged it the first time around have been flaunting theirs on social media ever since. I can personally vouch for the jacket, as I borrowed it from the brand to wear one London Fashion Week. I proceeded to fall head over heels for it when I tried it on with so many of my go-to outfits, and it made every single one feel more elevated and cool. Honestly, it's a minimalist's dream, and influencers have been styling theirs with everything from blue jeans and loafers for spring to relaxed tailoring and knitwear layers during autumn and winter.

In 2024, Whistles also introduced a petite version alongside the classic style, that currently comes in the black colourway. Whilst retaining the roomy appeal of the original, the petite style is cropped in the arm and body length to fit just right on shorter frames.

In terms of sizing, this jacket does come up oversized, so I would recommend sizing down. I would tend to wear a medium in a jacket for a comfortable fit, but am wearing the size small in the petite above.

I'm not sure about you, but I am officially over winter. Around this time every year, I am itching for spring and all it brings—better weather (finally), the beginning of the holiday season and a new wardrobe. Of course, I don't just buy an entirely new wardrobe, but just as I'm packing away my puffer coat, I say hello to all those garments I neatly placed in the box under the bed for the cooler months. As I rifle through the linen shirts, cotton trousers and sandals that I forgot I ever had, I rediscover them all over again. The basics are pretty covered, and then I pepper in a few new purchases that breathe new life into the older things, some of which I've had for years. 

With spring comes the event season. There are the races, Wimbledon (if you're into that sort of thing), a seemingly never-ending succession of weekends attending birthday parties in pub gardens and, of course, that other popular summer occasion—weddings. For me, a brand I turn to time and again for elevated warm-weather staples is Whistles. I took a visit to one of its stores to check out the new collection, and it didn't disappoint. Not only were there some stand-out high-summer styles, such as this fuchsia-pink dress, but there was also a handful of spring suede and leather pieces that are great for layering on cooler days.

My Review: Nothing says spring like a trench coat, especially in the UK when an April shower can hit any month of the year. A shirt with jeans is a winning combo for any season, but with sandals and a basket bag, it has summer written all over it.

My Review: This look is entirely inspired by my favourite TikTok trend, the vanilla-girl aesthetic. Wearing all-white outfits is an easy way to look expensive until, of course, you get on the Tube and get dirty. (My advice? Take Ubers or cover it with a trench coat.) This denim dress is so easy to throw on, and the contrast of denim—an ordinarily casual fabric—with this romantic puff-sleeve silhouette makes me feel like the only Disney princess with an edge.

My Review: Perhaps I'm biased because I'm a lover of pink, but I really believe this colour looks great on every skin tone. Made with 100% silk, this dress is part of the limited-edition collection. It's bold, beautifully made and perfect for wedding season.

My Review: We're big fans of anything Western inspired at Who What Wear. We live for cowboy boots, silver-buckled belts and suede fringe jackets. This black number is such a subtle statement. Not too OTT, it's a staple that still has an impact. For casual days, wear it with beige jeans like I have here. For festivals, pair it with a floral dress and rodeo boots, and you can consider yourself Daisy Jones.

My Review: If you want to take your suede game up a notch from the Western look above, look no further. Of course, this colourful co-ord can be styled as separates, but when something is this good, why wouldn't you want more of it? I love the belt on the jacket, as it really lets you cinch in the waistline, and the trousers fit like a glove (so no need to go up or down a size).

SUMMER SUITING

My Review: There's no denying that summer workwear can be difficult. When it comes to tailoring in the warmer months, look for linen or crêpe. This particular one is light but feels luxe. There's enough weight in the trousers to make them hang properly on the leg, and the blazer is neat but not so fitted you can't fit a tank below. (See this orange one, which I adore.) The key to making the most of your suit is layering. So get out the limited-edition leather trench coat when needed.

I’ve never had a hard time admitting when I’m wrong. In fact, I believe that owning up to your mistakes is one of the most important things you can do. And I’ve made a mistake I’d like to own up to and set right: I’ve been overlooking Whistles for far, far too long. But before we get into that, let’s begin with the reason we’re here.

One of the biggest perks of my job is getting to try on the latest collections before anyone else and legitimately call it work. That’s not to say being a fashion editor doesn’t come with its own unique set of stresses, but for the most part, it’s generally pretty fun. Still, I take my role seriously, so when I was asked to review Whistles’ brand-new autumn edit as part of our Great Try-On series, I was prepared to give my honest review, good or bad. Little did I know that I’d end up with a wish list as long as my arm and a newfound appreciation for the brand.

I’ve bought pieces from Whistles in the past, and I’ve always found them to be of a high quality. Still, even we fashion editors are guilty of falling into unhealthy shopping habits. I don’t shop much by any means, but over the past few years, when I have needed to add something new to my wardrobe, I’ve found myself defaulting to the same triad of brands. The reason? Pure laziness. Sure, I’d browse Whistles regularly to keep on top of the latest pieces for my work, but as for the last time I actually took the time to head into a store and try some pieces on? Well, that was before lockdown. However, after heading to the website and selecting items to be delivered to my door, I was excited to see what would arrive. Three huge boxes came, and inside, I found my dream autumn capsule. 

Below, I've selected a handful of the 'fits I assembled and loved. I'll break down the nuances of each in greater detail as we go, but if you take away anything from this feature, I hope it's this: Whistles just might be my new favourite brand. Scroll on.

1. Stripe Knit + Leather Trousers

My Review: Stripe jumpers are the cornerstone of my autumn/winter wardrobe, and just when I thought I had enough to see me through 2022, I come across this style. The stripes are navy, but a deep hue that looks almost black set against the rich camel. Honestly, I never thought I'd find a pair of leather trousers that fit me well—I'm a pretty true size 12 with shapely thighs but a smaller waist. My options would ordinarily be limited to sizing up and having them be too baggy around my middle or sticking to my usual, which would always feel constricted on the legs. This pair, however, fit like a glove; the tapered silhouette (something I generally avoid) was incredibly flattering, too. I'd heard great things about Whistles' leather pieces—now I can confirm they live up to the hype. And there are plenty more leather 'fits to come.

2. Bomber Jacket + Stripe Top + Leather Skirt

My Review: I have to admit there's very little my wardrobe is in desperate need of, but a casual autumn jacket is one of them. Going from tailored blazers straight to full-on coats coats, there's a gap in my outerwear collection that this bomber will seamlessly fill. One of the biggest trends on the autumn/winter 2022 runway, bombers are going to be all the rage this season. Of course, you could pair yours with jeans, but I decided to try it with another Whistles staple—a leather miniskirt. Again, I've struggled to find leather skirts that fit me properly in the past, but this style was ideal. The 12 had just the right amount of room to make it comfortable to wear and to tuck a chunky jumper into.

Styling-wise, I opted for a striped, long-sleeve T-shirt, which felt incredibly soft on my skin. Turns out even Whistles' basics are elite. Finishing the look with the brand's best-selling Dahlia lace-up boots, I had actually ordered these a couple of years ago in a size 37 but sent them back, as they felt too tight across the top of my foot. For try-on purposes, I got a 38, and they were perfect.

3. Fringe Jacket + Blue Jeans + Lace-Up Boots

My Review: To reiterate, I've got a bit of a gap in my wardrobe when it comes to casual autumn jackets. As luck would have it, I've found another excellent option in my Whistles haul. I've always admired the suede fringed jacket trend from afar, but whenever I've tried one on for myself, they have always felt a little costumey. This one, however, did not. Between the longline cut and the subtle flashes of fringing across the back and adorning the front pockets, I felt incredibly sleek in this the moment I slung it on. I'd wear this sort of jacket with classic jeans for an easy look; this was my first time trying any Whistles denim, and again, I really rated it. Although there was a bit of stretch to this kick-flare pair, I can tell the denim itself is starched enough to hold its shape. I'm 5'3", and although the length is supposed to be cropped, on me, it made for the ideal longer length. I wore a 30" waist, and they were perfect.

4. Cardigan + Wide-Leg Trousers

My Review: I've always been something of a cardigan obsessive, but ever since Katie Holmes stepped out in her Khaite bradigan, what?, four years ago, brands and designers have been serving up some of the coolest cardis I've seen. This style, complete with an oversized collar, is one of the softest I've worn. It's lightweight but by no means flimsy. Made from 100% RMS- and RWS-verified wool, it's guaranteed to keep you toasty. I styled mine with a crop top and some wide-leg trousers, and if I'm being honest, my photos just don't do it justice. I'm going to snap one up for myself and one for my mum for Christmas. It's that good.

5. Camel Coat + Shirt + Jeans + Shoulder Bag

My Review: Of all the items in my Whistles try-on, the one that blew me away was this coat. Camel coats are perhaps the most classic outerwear you can invest in, so if you have the budget to do so, it's something I'd always advise spending a little extra on to get one that'll stand the test of time. This, dear reader, is that very camel coat. I tried on a 10 and being deliberately oversized. It fit well and still had room for a chunky knit. In fact, it wasn't tight across my bum or legs in the slightest, meaning that there was no gaping or pulling when I belted it closed. I paired it with some cream-coloured jeans and a white shirt, both of which were also from Whistles, and some suede boots I already own for a monochrome outfit moment. To round off the already expensive-looking ensemble, I added this chic, croissant-shaped leather bag. Although it's by no means cheap in itself, it is significantly more affordable than styles from Bottega Veneta and The Row, which I'd compare it to.

6. Strapless Dress + Chain Necklace

My Review: With party season well within sight, it would have been remiss of me not to try on a more formal look. Simple, '90s-style dresses are everywhere right now, so when I saw this elevated take on the strapless dress, I thought I'd give it a whirl. It's not a silhouette I'd usually choose, so I was incredibly surprised at how much I loved it. Whistles has thought of everything in terms of its construction, from a rubberised panel around the neckline that touches the skin and helps to keep it from falling down to an elastic panel back for additional support. This is a dress I genuinely think I could attend an all-day wedding quite comfortably in. And that's saying something.

7. Shearling Jacket + Ribbed Dress

My Review: For my final look, I decided to go for something a little extra—at least, extra for me. This shearling-trimmed leather jacket has all the timeless appeal of a vintage style and the quality finish I'd expect from a high-end designer, making it a sound investment, budget willing. Double breasting is one of my favourite coat closures and always helps to elevate outerwear. I tried this on in a 10, but I'd likely opt for a 12, as it did feel the tiniest bit snug on my hips. For the outfit underneath, I chose a simple-looking ribbed midi dress with long sleeves and a high neckline. Truly, I was shocked at how flattering it was on, too. Somehow, it simultaneously cinched my waist and skimmed my tights to create a beautiful hourglass silhouette—yet another piece I've added to my now out-of-control Whistles basket.

Much like polka dots, Breton stripes and floral prints, gingham is one of the most distinguishable and dateless textile designs. I've observed the comings and goings of gingham dresses, and I've come to realise that gingham on midi lengths is an unmatched pairing. Come summer, there's always a place for gingham in my dress collection. Often printed onto puckered cotton or linen, the chequered print lends its wear to summer climates and brands release new variations of the gingham-print dress every year.

Gingham is a style indicative of warm weather, childhood nostalgia, and country living with a nod to the cottagecore aesthetic that has dominated over the past couple of summers. There's something about the print that evokes the candour of summer. When the clocks go back, gingham dresses come out to play. There's a gingham dress for every occasion, whether it's a smarter more tailored or a billowing silhouette adorned with ruffles and bows.

Dresses with shirred busts and dropped waists are still going strong while styles incorporating trend-led cut-outs have modernised the traditional print. There's a strong French influence at play, too. I can't think of button-down and bow dresses without envisaging low-lit dinners in Paris.

Whistles knows a thing or two about elevated yet accessible fashion. As one of the longest-standing high-street brands (46 years to date), it has managed to establish itself as a go-to for stylish wardrobe staples that feel a little more premium than your average high-street buy. And this was long before the likes of Arket and COS. Well, this week, I stumbled across a dreamy jacket that proves Whistles' enduring appeal remains as strong as ever.
