In part, this makes British fashion feel grungier and grittier than other cities (anyone who has walked through Brick Lane knows exactly what I mean), but in other areas, the capital masters polish with an almost regal air. Anyone who lives in the UK knows that summer is typically very tricky for us to navigate style-wise. One week, a heatwave will hit, sending us headfirst into lightweight linen pieces and pretty broderie dresses whilst we sell out the country's stock of fans. Since Proenza Schouler and Timo Weiland made the elegant '50s silhouette cool again in the 2010s, there’s been little noise on the pleated skirt front. Style Notes: A warm-weather no-brainer, if you can get the styling right, Bermuda shorts never date. However, the shift to year-round wear has piqued my interest ahead of 2026. With a timeless appeal, brands such as Ganni and MM6 Maison Margiela have foreshadowed that the next 12 months will be overflowing with longline shorts. Pairing with everything from loafers to knee-high boots with ease, these shorts bring indie-sleaze cool in the most polished way—a look I’m tapping into with full force next year.

Style Notes: Loafers will never not be chic, but as the preppy fashion aesthetic continues to capture the zeitgeist, forgotten styles like buckled "monk" shoes are fast becoming the newest way to differentiate yourself from the pack. These glorified "school shoes" might make you shudder at first glance, but they're a far cry from the clunky iterations of old. With buckles galore, these shoes feel current and are slightly fresher than the loafers which have flooded our feeds over the past 12 months.

Style Notes: If you're yet to invest in a warm scarf, why not try a cosy hood balaclava instead? Gaining in popularity over the last few years, a plush hood will keep you super snug and is arguably cooler and more comfortable than a clunky scarf (and definitely more refined than your favourite hoodie). Style Notes: Thanks to the rise of gorpcore (an aesthetic which sees hiking-adjacent pieces worn outside of their traditional realm), gilets have fast become the outerwear choice of the London fashion set. Before you see "finance bros" flashing in front of your eyes and shudder at the thought, the styles we're seeing now aren't restricted to the quilting (as seen on Christina Nadin above). From cosy faux fur to vibrant prints, these sleeveless jackets are a particularly functional way of vocalising self-expression through dressing (something Londoners love to do). Pairing well with jeans, trousers, skirts and leggings, the hardest part of styling a gilet is deciding which colourway to go with.

10. Thin Scarves

Style Notes: With an inherent '90s-rom-com vibe, the elongated thin scarf is the accessory trend fashionable Londoners can't get enough of. Picked up initially by Scandi women, it's a piece that simultaneously elevates cold-weather attire whilst adding an IYKYK energy to spring's most vibrant florals, weaving your outfits together with ease.

I recently spent some time in London and decided to observe what people were actually wearing while I was out and about. On my first day, I started scanning the crowds, expecting to see new trends—but instead, I found myself noticing the opposite: anti-trends. I saw timeless staples like trench coats, argyle knits, leather bomber jackets, black wool coats, fur-trimmed jackets, and knitted bonnets. There was one sneaker brand I noticed the most of—again and again (and again).

I first spotted pairs in Shoreditch, then again in Dalston. Even outside of East London, as I made my way through Mayfair and Marylebone, it was impossible to ignore. After walking around Covent Garden and Soho, it became apparent that this was the sneaker brand Londoners were loyal to.

From classic Gazelles and Sambas to lesser-seen Tokyos, Japans, and Taekwondos, there was a wide range of silhouettes, colorways, and prints. Keep scrolling to shop the sneakers everyone was wearing across the pond.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love London. I lived there for two years, and it's one of my all-time favorite cities and holds such a special place in my heart. Every time I go back, I feel the most me.

London's also where I got my first job in fashion. Out of the entire fashion-month calendar, I can't wait for London Fashion Week. From emerging Central Saint Martins students to designers I love, like Dilara Findikoglu and Conner Ives, there's just nothing quite like it.

I recently went on a trip in late October for the H&M x Glenn Martens collaboration and decided ahead of time that I wanted to take notes on trends I spotted. Very quickly, I found myself noticing far more anti-trends. Below, see a roundup of what I kept seeing everywhere across the pond—from outerwear and prints to cold-weather accessories and the sneaker brand seemingly everyone was wearing.

Trench Coats

Unsurprisingly, trench coats were all over the city known for its rain, from Shoreditch to Marylebone. During my entire trip, it was either overcast, misting, or pouring, so it's no wonder this was the outerwear of choice. It's a classic, timeless piece for a reason, and I love that you can wear it in both fall and spring, making the cost per wear worth it. It's a wardrobe staple through and through.

Argyle Print

Argyle popped up multiple times around London, and I can't say I ever expected the print to come back. It feels like a micro-trend in the U.S., but it's already fully taken off in London. I've been wearing my Swedish Stockings Franka Check Tights lately—an easy way to make an all-black outfit instantly more interesting.

Leather Bomber Jackets

Leather bomber jackets—zipped all the way up—caught my attention. I saw them styled with jeans and ballet flats or sneakers and with midi and knee-length skirts paired with knee-high boots.

Black Wool Coats

As anti-trend as it gets, the oversize black wool coat remains a cold-weather essential. My favorite is my Filippa Hägg Oversized Coat. I recently learned a great styling tip: Layer a Uniqlo Pufftech Jacket underneath for extra warmth without bulkiness.

Fur–Trimmed Coats

I couldn't help but notice all of the fur–trimmed statement coats. Charlotte Simone remains the go-to brand, but it's worth looking for vintage ones on eBay too. This is one of the most effortless ways to make an outfit more fun.

Knitted Bonnets & Balaclavas

Knitted bonnets and balaclavas took over in NYC last fall and winter, but across the Atlantic, they've been going strong for a while now. Perhaps this one blurs the line between trend and anti-trend, but I think this has become an enduring winter accessory.

Adidas Sneakers

The sneaker brand of choice was, by far, Adidas—mainly in colorful iterations. After season upon season of popularity, the Gazelles and Sambas feel like they've surpassed trend status entirely, standing the test of time. I also noticed plenty of Tokyos, Japans, and Taekwondos. Of course, there are still ways to make them feel trendy, such as cow print, studs, and unexpected colorways.

Winter and I have a love-hate relationship, especially when it comes to getting dressed. With an ever-present chill in my room, I rarely ever feel like sliding out of sweats or pyjamas. That said, fashion makes me happy and is a form of creativity I enjoy. Plus, wool coats, boots and winter colour palettes are all favourites of mine. So, I needed a solution. Style Notes: There have been a few great knitwear trends to surface this year, but the Fair Isle knit has been given a fashionable new upgrade and was adopted so quickly by the Copenhagen street style set that it was only a matter of time before it reached our shores too. On milder days, Londoners are eschewing their coats in favour of these statement (read: not "novelty") knits just in time for Christmas, so you don't have suffer through "ugly" jumper days again.

Style Notes: As enthusiastic as the rumours are that skinnies are making an imminent comeback, the streets would say the opposite as supersized denim is still the fit of choice. Now I might be a little biased here, but in my opinion London street style is hard to top. With an enduring love for timeless silhouettes, but an openness to new-season trends, the UK's city dwellers blend the timeless with the trending in creative ways that give me ample styling inspiration on the daily.

Whilst some Londoners prefer a more-is-more approach, others enhance their style with subtle outfit additions that work hard to show that they're in-the-know. Having just seen so many of my favourites from the London fashion scene at London Fashion Week as few weeks ago, I'm newly inspired by the subtle yet impactful outfit updates that Londoners are incorporating this season.

HERE'S HOW LONDONERS ARE UPDATING THEIR OUTFITS FOR 2024

1. CUFFED JEANS

Style Notes: Giving their beloved jeans a new lease of life, the London style crowd is choosing to swap their raw-hem styles in for neater cuffed versions. To get the look simply cuff and long pair of jeans or shop one of the many pre-cuffed styles available on the high street.

I recently took a trip to Paris and then London for a few days. In fact, I just shared a list of the elevated basics I noticed Parisians wearing on repeat during my trip. I thought I'd expand on the fashion moments I saw with the specific outfit formulas I spotted in both Paris and London.

Of course, I saw a range of inspiring ensembles, but there were two specific looks I seemed to see in some iteration every day. In Paris, I noticed chic looks that featured relaxed pants, a button-down shirt, and typically flats. Seriously, this look was everywhere. In London, I certainly saw this same easy-yet-forward look but also noticed so many people wearing flowy midi or maxi dresses and sneakers or sandals. I saw this two-piece outfit formula in every London neighborhood.

Below, you'll uncover visual inspiration showcasing these two looks. I also included shopping recommendations for your reference.

The look I saw in Paris:

This is a perfect example of the outfit I saw on so many Parisians. The relaxed button-down shirt combined with the loose trousers is so effortlessly cool.

There is something so elegant about this simple ensemble with the shirt and trousers. The belt is another nice addition.

Into the layered look? I also spotted many French women wearing an oversize button-down shirt over a tee or tank with wide-leg trousers or jeans.

The look I saw in London:

The London look I spotted with the flowy dress and easy shoes is just so chic. This ensemble is particularly noteworthy with the fun sleeves and sneakers.

It would be remiss of me to not mention H&M's stronghold in my wardrobe—and it's clear that the most fashionable people in London feel the same about this high-street brand. Whilst we find our most coveted pieces from a variety of stores, leave it to H&M to offer up pieces that look far more expensive than they are. In fact, it's nearly always in my top three, along with Arket and COS, which is handy, considering they can all be shopped in one place on the H&M website and app nowadays.

This season, I've spotted the same types of pieces appearing all around the streets of London. Whether it's designer-looking jeans, an extremely sleek pair of suede loafers or a well-tailored waisted cardigan, it's clear H&M has winning pieces that aren't going unnoticed. I've felt the same, as my Favourites list is often too full to add to. And with spring and summer styles trickling their way in, I, of course, can't help but compile a wish list for the coming months.

With several H&M stores on every major high street in the capital, it's a regular occurrence to see its pieces when you're out and about. But whilst we all eagerly await new edits and collaborations, the latest additions to the main line will most certainly suffice.

When it comes to fashion, British people might just be the most judgmental of them all. I spent six months living in London and heard it all during my time there about Americans and their "questionable fashion ideas." You'll never hear the end of it if you think it's appropriate to show up to a restaurant in "trainers" that's for sure.

The Brits can often be the harshest critics. I wanted to learn more about what British people really think of American fashion so I asked a friend who recently moved there, Chrissy Rutherford. "I've lived in New York my entire life, so I was ready to just do something different," she told me. "I used to cover London Fashion Week from 2016–2019, so I had cultivated a network there which made it an easy transition."

Rutherford has been spending time living between London and New York for about 6 months and I live for her content about the experience. Having been a fashion editor for years, she's quick to pick up on fashion trends and I've noticed some shifts in her personal style since she began her London journey. And just like that, we're already halfway through fashion month, and after enjoying the stylish offerings from our friends across the pond, it's time to bring it back to Britain. While team Who What Wear were busy dashing from show to show, we had plenty of time to discuss our favourite fashion moments of the week, and while we wait to see what Paris brings to the runway, the best dressed in our own capital have given us plenty of inspiration. 

On the runways Richard Quinn, Dilara Fındıkoğlu, and Di Petsa explored dark gothica with plenty of leather and lace, Paul & Joe, Ahluwalia, and David Koma made bright red the shade of the season, and Burberry's hotly anticipated re-invention under Daniel Lee brought the heritage check back to the forefront. And, outside the shows looked just as exciting as on the runways. London has always been celebration of diversity, mixing cultural references with plenty of colour, texture and standout silhouettes, and this season the street style did not disappoint. 

From statement eveningwear to chic separates, we learned a lot from the streets of London, and it's the perfect place to start when looking for new outfit inspo. Scrolling through pictures of the best street style looks we noticed the same hero pieces re-appearing time and again, and immediately took note on these very key buys. Thankfully enough, it isn't all eye-wateringly priced designer clothing, and in fact, you may well already have a few of them in your closet. 

Just like the Big Apple, in London a sophisticated colour palette rules everything, and although we're partial to pops of pastels and heavy on the print clash, you'll often find us breaking up a tonal look with a statement bag, or keeping head-to-toe brights grounded with an expensive looking neutral. Thanks to the great British weather there was a particular focus on coats this season (and long, boxy tailoring tended to win out over cinched waists), but among the shoulder pads and longline silhouettes were reworked denim, polished leather, and plenty of the playful twists that London has come to be known for.

With another Fashion Month behind us and an exciting season of dressing ahead, there is plenty of new style inspiration for those looking for an easy wardrobe refresh in the upcoming months. While the runways might have given us some standout moments we won't forget in a hurry (Loewe car dress, I'm talking about you), when it comes to what we actually want to wear this autumn and winter, the first place I always look for inspo isn't to the shows, but to the crowds outside. 

Street style is the place to go to see how catwalk trends translate to real life, and every city has its own distinct style. In New York, you'll find the androgynous cool girls who champion tailoring and up-and-coming brands; Milan is your destination for statement, high-octane glamour; and Paris is the capital of supremely polished haute-couture, leaving, of course, London.

Living and working in London means I've spent a fair amount of time decoding the wardrobes of stylish British women—what they like to wear to work, the brands they regularly shop and what makes them feel their most confident, and the results are clear. London women are all about style and substance. You won't find us trying flash-in-the-pan trends or shelling out on impractical pieces, we like to know our money is being well invested. And with a chilly autumn fully setting in this month, our focus is on the new-season trends that London is banking on, and in turn, those that are better left to the runway. 

Our comprehensive trend report covers all of the looks that made a splash last season, and after a year more divisive than any other, you're either in one fashion camp or another, so I searched the streets of London to find out the way influencers, fashion editors and cultural tastemakers are really dressing right now.

Of course, style is entirely subjective and when it comes to trying a new look, it still has to feel authentically you, so there's no right or wrong way to tackle this season's biggest trends. 1. BAGGY JEANS 

If you grew up in the UK at any time between the late '80s and early noughties, you'll have vivid memories of the baggy denim trend that came into full effect with the pop-punk renaissance. Should you have been (un)fortunate enough to be a teenager in the 2000s, you'll probably still be able to feel the soaking wet hemlines of dragging around this ultra-wide-leg denim in the pouring rain, and are surprised to see it swishing its way down the runways. We have the Y2K revival to thank for this trip down memory lane.

SWAP FOR: STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS 

Style Notes: The London girls have spoken and baggy jeans are best left to MySpace. Instead, they are loyal to the most universally flattering denim fit: straight legs. Roomier than skinnies but without the weighty fabric of wide legs, it's the practical, everyday jean style you can rely on.

2. CROPPED JACKETS 

Let's face it: No matter how cute they might look, it's far too cold in the capital for an exposed midriff. As everyone from Dolce & Gabbana to Coperni showed the shrunken fit. The mini jacket followed in the footsteps of its natural accompaniment (the micro miniskirt) in a bid for viral success, but unlike the short skirts we wore all summer, this time, the weather isbn't on our side. 

SWAP FOR: MAXI COATS

Style Notes: Maxi length, maximum style. From trench to wool, the longline coat has always been a safe bet that never goes out of style, and its now coming into its own for layering up against the seasonal chill. Pair with an oversized cashmere knit and the much discussed "puddle pants" to play with the coats generous proportions.

3. PUNK

Britain, and more specifically London, is the birthplace of the punk subculture that influenced an entire generation of fashion. From The Sex Pistols to Vivienne Westwood, if you think of anarchic fashion, London isn't too far behind. After a couple of years of relatively polished and ladylike dressing, the rebel attitude is back (albeit with an elevated edge), and everyone from Alexander McQueen to the buzzy Marine Serre showed plenty of tartan, studs. rips and leather, but the front row of the shows told a different story. 

SWAP FOR: '90S MINIMALISM 

Style Notes: Among influencers and fashion editors, there is currently an unspoken uniform of simplicity. Minimalism as reimagined by the likes of The Row, Jil Sander and Khaite continues to reign supreme, and of all the silhouettes that are favoured the most, the streamlined '90s fit is by far the most popular. Straight-legged jeans, tube skirts and cardigans are top of the agenda for an easy look that always looks put together, no studs or safety pins required.

4. MAXI SKIRTS 

I have a soft spot for the maxi skirt. It's elegant, flattering silhouette suits just about every body type, but granted, it might not be the most practical choice for London. Despite some persuasive inspo from Burberry, Chanel, Carolina Herrera and ACNE, Brit girls just aren't into swishing around the mulchy leaves in a floor-sweeping maxi. 

SWAP FOR: MINISKIRTS

Style Notes: And just like that, we're back to the mini (granted this time around it's with a knee-high boot and a pair of tights). The runaway success of the micro mini shows no sign of slowing down, and whether you're layering it up for the office, or dressing it up for party plans, the mini hem is sticking around for another season at least. Just pair with a cosy knit and longline coat to beat the chilly breeze.

5. BARBIE PINK 

This was one of those trends you just couldn't miss for obvious reasons. Bright, bold, unapologetic pink burst onto the Valentino runway earlier this year and sent shockwaves through an industry that had gotten comfortable with normcore dressing post-lockdown. Coinciding with the announcement of Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, so the term "Barbiecore" was coined, and the vibrant hit of dopamine felt like the antidote to a very bleak year. Still, it didn't manage to win over everyone with its intense hue. 

SWAP FOR: RED 

Style Notes: You might have neon fuchsia in your wardrobe, but the chances are more than likely that you've given red a good go. Confident and strong fiery red is the equally bold but far more wearable cousin of Barbie pink. A little more grown-up. Basma Kahie and Andrea Sheen prove just how easy head-to-toe red is to wear for the evening, simply by nipping in at the waist and adding a heel. So next time you reach for a classic all-black ensemble, consider swapping it for red.

6. CUTOUTS 

Time and again when we survey our editors' opinions on the trends we're ready to see the back of (quite literally in this case), the cutout always tops the list. There is a time and place for peekaboo cut-outs, and while a clever keyhole or exposed shoulder does still sometimes add a point of interest to a look, more often than not they are strategically placed in a part of the piece that makes it feel unwearable. When we want our clothes to make us feel at our most confident, there is nothing worse than having to readjust a bra strap here, and compromise on our comfortable pants there, all in the name of flashing patches of skin.

Style Notes: Just to prove that we aren't prudish, the way London women are choosing to show a little skin is with subtle, sheer, mesh dresses, skirts and tops. Not only is there the illusion of nudity without actually having to strip off, but clever layering gives you the option to show as much, or as little, as you'd like.

They may say that the French have a certain je ne sais quoi when it comes to fashion, but in our opinion, nothing beats a London girl’s wardrobe.
