Blink, and you'll miss it. Over the past year, Banana Republic has ventured deep into its archives (of almost 50 years!) to produce reissues and reinterpretations of its most beloved vintage pieces. After its recent collaboration with the Explorers Club for the Archive Reissue, the heritage brand just dropped a new vintage-inspired collection. This time, the brand is calling on Amy Blanchard—vintage curator, stylist, and co-owner of Portland-based James Rowland Shop—to weigh in.

The Inspiration Behind the Collection

My first reaction to the collection was "It's giving '90s chic." Maybe it's the minimalist in me, or it's the aftereffect of Sarah Pidgeon in Love Story. I felt confident this was the inspiration, but to err on the side of caution, I asked Max Cohen, Banana Republic's senior archive specialist, to confirm. "We were particularly drawn to the late-1990s and early-2000s era and saw an opportunity to celebrate the Banana Republic woman through a capsule dedicated entirely to womenswear," Cohen clarified. "What makes this era so compelling is its emphasis on refined simplicity. The product was designed with clean, thoughtful silhouettes and elevated materials, placing a strong focus on fabric, texture, and craftsmanship."

What should you expect from the release? Well, who better to hear from than Blanchard herself? "There's a good mix of elevated basics—silk rib knits, cashmere tank top, easy linen pants, and more aspirational wow pieces, like the leather and suede jackets and baby-blue ball-gown skirt," she said. "Then there are the accessories, which lean a little more sporty, like nylon sport packs. I love the juxtaposition of sporty and luxe. It's very Bay Area coded, which is where Banana Republic and I both originated."

It is clear that the opportunity to explore the Banana Republic archive is not lost on Blanchard and Cohen. "What makes this process so meaningful is that it allows us to draw from a genuine heritage," said Cohen.

I'm 23, and I don't have my ears pierced. No, this isn't the start of "two truths and a lie." There isn't a good answer; I just never got around to it. That's not to say I wasn't tempted every time I passed a Claire's while growing up in the aughts. The FOMO was real.

As I said, screw-back earrings are a big no-no, but paddle-back and cushion earrings are always acceptable. Much of my collection is the product of summers spent in Cyprus, gemstones gifted to me by my Yiayia, and bespoke designs by local artisans. This selectivity has resulted in curated heirlooms deeply rooted in memory and history.

My most recent addition is from Ysso, a London- and Athens-based jewelry brand. Founded by mother-and-daughter duo Alexia and Stalo Karides, Ysso beautifully blends traditional Greek influences with modern aesthetics. The geometric and asymmetrical designs evoke images of ancient architecture. Even the brand name is an ode to their Hellenic heritage: "chrysso," meaning gold.

I've been a follower of the brand for many years. Though my unpierced ears keep me from shopping its hoop and stud options, the beaded necklaces and sculptural cuffs consistently appear on my summer wish list.

To my surprise and appreciation, I recently discovered the Ion Clip Earrings. Crafted from solid bronze and plated in 24-karat gold, these lightweight earrings aren't just decorative accessories. They're pieces of ancient Greece itself. If you are well-versed in Hellenic architecture, the spiral scroll motif will look familiar. Crafted to mimic the Ionic order columns of ancient Greece, these earrings are designed to withstand the test of time.

Vintage Christian Dior

It's no secret that vintage sourcing and thrifting have redefined the way modern buyers shop. Whether it's the hunt itself or the environmental aspect that motivates you, shopping secondhand is just as rewarding as buying off the runway. Not to mention, the self-satisfaction that is found when you finally score the vintage item of your dreams will make you believe in fate.

I often recommend shopping vintage designer for clip-on earrings. For one, the sheer volume of inventory is overwhelming. From The RealReal to Fashionphile to eBay to your local consignment shop, it would seem there is an endless supply. Handmade in NYC, Agmes is unmatched in its ability to blend sculptural forms with wearability. Known for its minimalist aesthetic and organic shapes, the collections are equally influenced by urban landscapes and fine art. With an emphasis on using recycled metals, the Agmes process is incredibly thoughtful.

New designs are released regularly, and Agmes has one of the largest collections of clip-on earrings among contemporary luxury brands, from what I've seen. There is even a dedicated section on its site for clip-on earrings. It spans far beyond the typical teardrop, stud, or mini hoop, expanding into whimsical swirls, one-of-a-kind freshwater pearls, and collaborations with sculptors.

From the collection, I like the Luca Earrings in sterling silver with clear crystal quartz beads, which are also available in onyx, lapis, and gold vermeil. Wheeler notes that it's one of the main brands that often come up when brides visit Studio Dorothy with requests, and it makes sense. I'm not saying you can't indulge in a luxurious, capacious clutch (say, the new The Row Peggy Clutch), but I much prefer the slender look of its elongated counterpart. Everyone approaches becoming a bride differently. For some, the wheels start turning during childhood—grade-school daydreams filled with dresses and flowers that make up an idealized day. I even know a few people who bought their dress long before they found their person. Then there are others who remain largely unbothered by any of it until they suddenly find themselves inundated with wedding planning. I belonged to the latter.

I got engaged in January 2017 and married in July 2018. Back then, the vintage market, especially vintage bridal, was far less expansive than it is today. Around that same time, the first location of my own vintage shop happened to be right next door to Happy Isles salon, one of the true pioneers of vintage bridal.

Whenever business was slow, I would wander next door to try things on—not with any real intention of buying yet but more as a way to understand how I actually wanted to feel. I had never dreamed of being a bride, and I definitely didn't want to feel like a princess. I'm tall and feel awkward in anything too voluminous but also not quite right in anything overly formfitting. Somewhere in the midst of all that trying on, I realized I didn't really want to look like a bride at all.

Lily Kaizer, the founder of Happy Isles, became my guide during that time. She helped me reframe what bridal could look like in a way that felt personal and comfortable. Over time, I ended up with several beautiful pieces from her salon.

The process felt more overwhelming than I had expected. Weddings look different for everyone. Timelines, access, and resources vary widely, and there is no single right way to do this. Vintage felt meaningful to me because it allowed room to get creative, change my mind, and move intentionally over time.

What I Learned Along the Way

1. Start early, even if all you have is an hour here and there. Browsing online in small pockets of time can still offer inspiration, whether during a lunch break or while unwinding on the couch at night.

2. Once you can, start visiting shops in person. Time gives you space to explore without pressure and allows your taste to evolve. There is a sweet spot between browsing freely and trusting your instincts when something feels right. You should never have to talk yourself into a dress. Always listen closely to your gut.

3. Online searching can feel intimidating at first, but it becomes easier once you know how to approach it. Simply typing "wedding dress" into a search could lead to disappointment. I prefer starting with the bones of a piece.

4. I usually think about era first. I often begin with the 1920s, especially if you're drawn to fluid, slinky silhouettes or something that doesn't feel overtly bridal. From there, narrow by fabric—silk, rayon, chiffon, lace. Fabric often tells you more than most labels ever will.

5. Color matters too. Some of the best bridal dresses are never described as white. Cream, ivory, pale yellow, and champagne often yield far better results.

6. Don't immediately rule out a great vintage dress because it's the wrong size or has a few flaws. A skilled seamstress can work wonders. I almost always consider a wide range of sizes, especially one or two sizes up. Buying larger can give you length, while fit can almost always be adjusted.

7. I also suggest looking for dresses that were never meant to be bridal at all. Vintage evening gowns, beaded silk dresses, and Old Hollywood–style pieces often make the most memorable wedding looks.

8. If something you love isn't accessible—whether because of timing, availability, or cost—take notes. Pay attention to what drew you to it: the cut, the fabric, the era, the feeling. Use those details as a road map. If a designer piece is out of reach, look at what inspired it instead. Searching by era and silhouette can get you surprisingly close.

9. Save listings and come back to them. The best pieces don't always reveal themselves immediately. Don't be shy about asking sellers questions. Most are happy to provide measurements, additional photos, or more context about a piece.

10. Vintage can be surprisingly open-ended when you give yourself time to really look. Some of my favorite pieces have shown up in places I wasn't expecting.

Happy Isles salon remains the gold standard for vintage bridal in Los Angeles. With a dreamy curation and a deeply thoughtful approach to the experience of becoming a bride, it's where I learned that vintage bridal does not have to feel like a costume. They also have a New York location and operate by appointment only.

The Highline Vintage

The Highline Vintage is a treasure trove of romantic dresses with plentiful whites, creams, and champagnes. If you're looking for true vintage with a softer price range, its showroom is well worth a visit. Appointments are required.

The Kit Vintage

The Kit Vintage falls somewhere in between with a beautiful mix of unlabeled vintage and designer options. A bonus is that it's next door to Platt Boutique, a shop filled with dazzling vintage jewelry to accessorize your look. It's open Tuesday through Saturday and also available online.

Tab Vintage

Tab Vintage has recently added chic bridal edits to its selection with a strong roster of designer gowns in bridal hues. Think Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, and more. It's by appointment only with an online shop as well.

Lily et Cie

Lily et Cie offers a very specific experience with museum-level couture pieces that are exceptionally rare. It's best suited for serious collectors. The store is by appointment only, and no photos are allowed.

Where to Shop Vintage Online

• If you're on Instagram, I'd recommend following vintage bazaars like A Current Affair and Pickwick Vintage. They travel between Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, and it's always worth stopping by if they happen to be in your area. Even if you don't find the one, browsing in person can be incredibly helpful.

• For those shopping online, many people I know have had wonderful luck with Gossamer, Xtabay Vintage, Transplant Vintage, Raffe Vintage, and Eveliina Vintage. Each offers a distinct point of view.

• Marketplaces like eBay and Etsy remain some of the best tools for finding incredible and affordable options if you approach them thoughtfully. Bookmark your favorites and revisit them over time. It becomes habitual in the best way. 1stDibs is excellent for higher-end and archival pieces when budget allows and works best when used with specific keywords.

In the end, this is meant to be fun. It's a unique moment of self-reflection where you get to express yourself freely. I hope your search unfolds in a way that feels celebratory, unhurried, and true to who you are.

Vintage and '90s- and 2000s-inspired activewear has been trending again. What used to feel kind of dated—bright colors, patterns, mix-and-match sets, fold-over yoga pants, workout capris—suddenly feels fun again. If you're looking to go down your own rabbit hole, I'd recommend Natalia Spotts and @intentionalgirl, who both frequently post about their own collections.

The best way to shop it is on eBay. Start your searches with "vintage," then add keywords like Nike, Lululemon, Pink, Adidas, GapFit, Bebe Sport, Puma Nuala, and Courrèges. Rummage Stretch and After Practice are good vintage sources to check as well.

Founded by American in Paris Nicolette Contursi, Les Archives was founded in 2021, and its physical boutique opened in the heart of Saint-Germain just two years ago. While you may spot a few iconic pieces from the '70s, the majority of what you'll find in this pink jewel box of a shop is more contemporary vintage from the '90s and 2000s, featuring runway pieces from some of the most iconic—and, for many millennials, most nostalgic—collections, like Gucci by Tom Ford and Chloé by Phoebe Philo. "Fashion history, research, and archival imagery lies at the heart of the brand," explains Contursi. All documented pieces have a custom inventory tag that highlights the origin of each piece and features a Polaroid image referencing the piece's runway appearance, campaign feature, or celebrity moment.

Have you ever landed on a TikTok video so good you're shocked it hasn't already gone viral? Yeah, that's how I felt when I stumbled upon a new outfit video by Canada-based influencer Bridget Brown. What made it stand out to me? At first glance, it was just an incredibly chic look, but when I learned that Brown was wearing a vintage Sears matching set that she thrifted for a mere $8, I knew I had to give this outfit the attention it deserves.

Picture this: It's the summer of 1996. The Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan already won the NBA championship (again), and the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, have just started. In a few months, the Spice Girls will release their debut album, and on Friends, Ross and Rachel are about to decide that it's time to take a break (kind of). And if all that wasn't enough, Emma, the 1996 film adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, just came out, with star Gwyneth Paltrow attending the New York City premiere alongside her brother, Jake, and parents, actress Blythe Danner, and director and producer Bruce Paltrow. Her outfit for the occasion: A little black dress by Calvin Klein, of course.

Just like today, the style back in '96 was all about minimalism, so Paltrow's scoop-neck, sleeveless gown wasn't showy, but casually elegant, with a fitted silhouette and floor-grazing hemline. For the most part, she didn't even accessorize, only wearing a pair of simple diamond studs and black satin sandals. She finished off the ensemble with a satin clutch and a dark red lip.

Nearly two decades later, Paltrow's Emma premiere look would fit right in in 2025—and it did, this time, on her 21-year-old daughter. Apple Martin accompanied her mom to tonight's New York City premiere of Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, where she wore Paltrow's exact Calvin Klein dress from when she, too, was in her early 20s. Oh, and remember when she wore (and then re-wore in 2021) the iconic red velvet Tom Ford Gucci suit to the 1996 MTV VMAs? No one does it like her, except, well, her daughter.

For too long, the world put athletes into singular boxes. Your sport is your priority, and anything outside of that is just a distraction. They said it to Lewis Hamilton when he first started to dip his toe into fashion. More recently, they said it to Paige Bueckers during her "summer world tour" before her senior year at UConn. In today's sports world, the best, most recognizable athletes aren't just one thing. Need more proof? Meet Lily Muni He.

He has been playing golf since she was 5 years old—her whole life. She's 26 now, and the sport her father introduced her to as a toddler in Chengdu, China, where she was born, is now more than just a hobby. "It's my job," she tells me over Zoom at the end of September. "Having it as a job and loving it as a sport can be very different at times." He got serious about pursuing a career in professional golf after her family moved first to Vancouver when she was 9 and then settled in San Diego. She continues, "The lifestyle is something you have to learn to adapt to and love, and that's something I struggled with at the beginning of my career."

Though He still calls California home, she's rarely there for long periods of time. Already this LPGA season, she's traveled around America, checking off Portland, Oregon; Maineville, Ohio; and Boston, Massachusetts as well as international courses in Shanghai and northern France, and that doesn't account for her stops along the Formula One calendar. As the longtime girlfriend of Williams driver Alex Albon, she's frequently spotted in the F1 paddock, usually wearing a perfect mixture of sought-after vintage Miu Miu and Roberto Cavalli and sold-out It items by Bottega Veneta and Hermès. He is a modern-day renaissance woman, juggling a professional sports career; long-distance relationships with her partner, friends, and family; and a budding career in fashion. Fortunately, when you love everything you do, finding ways to balance them all is a good problem to have.

ON GOLF: He tells me during our call that it's her first day home since early June. "I make sure to revisit and refine my love for the sport," she says when I ask her how she doesn't burn out. "What helps me is going out there and playing by myself. I really enjoy the peacefulness of it all. To me, it's a form of therapy." She'll also get a group of friends together to play when her schedule allows it but never anyone she typically competes against. "We get so caught up in it all," she tells me. "Golf is such a frustrating sport—if you don't hit the shot exactly how you want to, you often feel really disappointed, so it's important to remind yourself that it's just a game."

According to He, playing golf for the last two decades has taught her a lot, and it's not just which club to pull for each shot and the perfect angle for a foolproof put. "You start to learn that, actually, mistakes happen every round, every hole, and you can't control what's not within your control," she says. As a result, she's naturally become better equipped to deal with frustration, mistakes, and strong emotions. "It's helped me to become more patient in life as well," she says. "It's crazy [how much] golf has shaped my life." According to her, everything about who she is now is because of the sport she took up as a little kid. "Who I am now, what I do, everything in my life is so tightly connected to who I was able to meet through golf—my friends and even my relationship," she says. The fact that He will still have the ability to play the game that she's always loved when she eventually retires is even more rewarding. "It's such a cornerstone of my life, and I'm so grateful for it," she continues.

That's not to say that golf doesn't come with its pain points. Being a woman in such a male-dominated, traditional sport hasn't always been easy for He. "We have country clubs, and a lot of these country clubs restrict female members, or there are very strict dress codes," she tells me. "There seem to be double standards when it comes to males and females within the sport, and it's taken me many years to realize that and unlearn a lot of those double standards." Although difficult, doing so has been an empowering process. "Proving the stigmas wrong has been a big journey for me," she says. Now that women's sports and women's golf, in particular, are growing, visible changes are happening. "I see a lot more young girls and women in general getting into golf," she tells me. "That's the ultimate goal: to get more women involved and interested in playing golf and [all] sports." There's still a long way to go, according to He, but "that doesn't mean we're not getting anywhere."

ON LIFE OUTSIDE OF GOLF: Golf isn't He's only priority, though, and finding balance in life is something she's constantly thinking about, even if she doesn't have it down 100% of the time. "I do realize that the life I live right now is not very normal, and it's probably not sustainable in the long-term," she tells me, but that's okay. "I love everything that I do. I love my sport, I love my relationship, [and] I love having a brand outside of golf, and because I value all these things in my life, it has been a bit hectic." Maybe it's the patience or serenity she's learned through her craft, but He understands that, while she's doing a lot now, that won't always be the case. Certain weeks, months, and even years will see her priorities shift in different directions, but at this second, she's okay with a bit of chaos.

"Next year, I will be prioritizing my personal time a bit more," she admits. "Spending time at home, resting up, and being with my family and friends—that's something that's been neglected in these past two years that I came to realize is a very important part of my life." If giving time to that means sacrificing a little bit here and there, it's worth it to He. Like with her golf game, her life off the course requires just as much continuous self-reflection. "Listening to my own feelings and trusting [them] and letting [them] guide what [I] should be doing is important," she says.

ON FASHION: One of the non-golf-related ventures she's been focusing on is fashion, an industry she never thought she'd pursue as a career growing up but found herself in simply due to genuine interest. "I never knew I wanted to get into it, but fashion was something I was always very passionate about since I was a kid," she says. Her sister studied fashion design, so He was raised around clothes. They'd come up with fun outfit ideas together and make their own DIY Halloween costumes. "Before I turned professional, I got on social media, and I started to gain a bit of a following. I realized that maybe this is my niche," she says of fashion. "A lot of my followers often would comment how they enjoyed my looks on and off the course, so I started to share a bit more of them." Eventually, brands that didn't usually partner with golfers began reaching out, opening He up to new opportunities and introducing these labels to an entirely different landscape in women's professional golf. In recent years, He has worked on campaigns for Miu Miu, David Yurman, and Calvin Klein. ["Women's sports are] a huge market that [nontraditional sports brands] haven't tapped into, but now, they are," she says. "I love it!"

ON PADDOCK STYLE: There are limits to what she can wear on the golf course, but there is another sporting arena where she's been able to flex her style and growing collection of rare designer vintage. Soon after she began dating Albon in 2019, He started attending races on the F1 calendar to support him in her free time. "It's given me an opportunity to dress up more often, which is fun," she says. "[F1] has always been a very glamorous sport, but at certain races—for example, Singapore or Abu Dhabi—people tend to dress up like it's a party, and I find that very cool for me, inspiration-wise."

Accessories are her bread and butter, something you'll notice the second you scroll through her Instagram feed. "I know what works for me, and sometimes, I like very clean silhouettes," she explains. Because she's not very tall, she says, they just work better for her frame. "But I love fun accessories, whether it's handbags or shoes or just little details. I feel like they add so much personality and uniqueness to my personal style." There's the JW Anderson Pigeon Clutch she's regularly spotted with around the paddock as well as the Coperni F/W 23 hand emoji tank she wore in a photo posted on IG. Maison Margiela Tabis in all heel heights and styles are frequently seen on He—as are crafty Bottega Veneta bags and shoes in unexpected shapes (like a wristlet in the form of an Intrecciato-wrapped orange). And then there's her rare Hermès Bolide on Wheels Bag. "I've had my eye on it for so long," she tells me. "I've turned down some very nice bags that people would typically want just to have that bag, which I'm very happy now to own."

ON VINTAGE: Collecting archival fashion items has been a passion of He's since high school. "I could talk about it forever," she says. "It used to be just thrift finds or whatever I could find on Depop—not necessarily designer—but then when I turned professional, I rewarded myself with the vintage Chanel surf dress from 2002." It was her first big purchase back in 2016 or 2017, and she paid $600 for it. It was a lot of money to her, but when Kylie Jenner wore the dress a year later, its value on the secondhand market skyrocketed to upward of $6000. "That started my whole obsession with finding really good vintage pieces and deals and collecting them," she says. "I joke and say it's like an investment, but it's also kind of true."

He plays favorites not only with brands but also with specific seasons from those labels. "I have a lot of vintage Prada and Miu Miu from 1996, 1997, 1999, and then into the early 2000s," she tells me. "I tend to go down a rabbit hole of runway photos of a brand or a season that I like and then just go out there and scout the internet for whatever pieces from those seasons." At the moment, He's parents' house has three closets full of just her clothes, including her vast collection of vintage, as well as all her golf gear. "I just hoard them," she jokes. For He, digging through the internet's vast world of vintage fashion is an escape from her hectic and hypercompetitive lifestyle. It's a way to unwind when she's on the road that not only calms her and takes her mind off whatever tournament she's playing in at the moment but also satisfies her other off-course interests. "It makes me so happy," she says.

When she can, He likes to shop for vintage in person, too, mostly during breaks in her international travels. "Europe, in general, is very good for sourcing," she tells me. In her opinion, Americans have started to realize just how much vintage designer pieces can be worth, so they tend to significantly mark up prices. In Europe, they're still selling just from their closets instead of reselling for a big profit, so you can find rare vintage pieces for a fair price. "I spend quite a bit of time in Monaco and the South of France, and I know there's always really nice vintage markets on the weekends in Nice, so I've dragged Alex there a few times," she says. "Shopping is not his favorite hobby, but he loves to come with me."

He and Albon supporting each other's interests is something that came up a lot during our 30-minute call. It's one of the reasons why she's often jetting around the world during her off weekends, and the same goes for him. It's also why she doesn't mind being called a WAG, a controversial term used to reference the wives and girlfriends of athletes. "Alex and I always joke that we're each other's WAG because, to us, [a] WAG or HAB [husbands and boyfriends] is just the partner of a professional athlete, and that's how I feel when I go to races," she says. She's there to cheer on Albon, period. "We feel really lucky to just support each other in both of our sports. If that's to be called a WAG, then yeah, I am a WAG," she adds. But Albon is just as much her WAG as she is his. "Now, everyone calls him a WAG, which he's very happy to be," she says. At the end of the day, He always remembers who she is—a professional athlete—and no catchy nickname is going to change that. "Never for a second do I forget my own career and my own sport," she tells me. "It's [what] I've dedicated my whole life to."

Shopping secondhand is my favorite activity, mostly because I love the thrill of the chase. I’m often perusing reseller sites such as Depop, The RealReal, and eBay to see what’s “new” to shop. When a piece has been owned before, it feels like there’s a story within it. I love the idea of giving a piece new life by reselling or buying secondhand.

There are some who have their reservations about buying secondhand, and I completely understand the hesitation. If you haven’t tried it before or were maybe turned off by an unauthenticated purchase, it might feel discouraging, which is why I wanted to give a tutorial on how to buy a designer bag secondhand. I've included tips from my personal experience and from an expert at Depop, a go-to site for all things designer secondhand.

Steve Dool, Depop’s director of marketing and communications, told me that some of the top-selling bags from the past two months on the platform are the Balenciaga City bag, The Row Idaho bag, and the Gucci Jackie 1961 bag. That means, like you, many fashion people are looking to reseller sites for their designer bag needs. There are a few small steps to get you to take that big leap of hitting “checkout,” so keep scrolling if you’re in the market for a “new” secondhand designer bag.

Be Specific in Your Search

There are three things to keep in mind when you’re searching for a designer handbag secondhand: your budget, the bag you want, and resale value. I always set my filter to the price range I’m willing to pay. From there, I look up the bag I want. One thing I’ve learned, especially when shopping on sites like eBay, The RealReal, or Depop, is that simply typing in “designer handbags” is not going to get you to the piece you want. Dool also weighed in, saying, “Searching for the brand, specific style, time period, and color are key search terms to help find the exact designer bag you’re looking for.” If you have a bag in mind, for example, a Fendi baguette bag, start with that as your search words. It's also helpful to include the year of the make or runway show and the material of the bag (leather, suede, satin, raffia, etc.).

Check Seller Reviews

A big mistake when shopping for a designer bag secondhand is not checking a seller’s reviews. This is the most telling and important thing to look at, aside from the authentication of a designer bag. Checking reviews of a seller can be a make-or-break in your purchasing experience. Once, I regretfully failed to check the reviews of a reseller on an app, and let’s just say I wasn’t happy with my purchase. “There are plenty of sellers, like On Seam and Lal Vintage, who specialize in vintage designer pieces and keep their shops well stocked! We recommend buying designer items from trusted sellers with positive reviews. Ratings and reviews are open and visible on every seller’s Depop shops,” shared Dool.

He also shared that Depop is always encouraging sellers to provide details that support the bag’s authentication, whether that's providing receipts or proof of purchase or including photos of the tags. "We explicitly prohibit the sale of counterfeit goods on Depop, outlined in our community guidelines. Our dedicated Trust & Safety team, supported by AI and machine learning models, proactively moderate the platform to detect and remove items and/or accounts that sell these items. It's also helpful to note that if you receive an item that is not as described, you are covered by Depop Buyer Protection and guaranteed a refund. The dedicated team evaluates the situation and provides a full refund if the issue is reported within 30 days of the date of purchase. We also encourage our users to report any prohibited items or activity that fail to live up to our guidelines,” Dool explained.

In general, checking reviews is important to make sure the bag you want will go through an authentication process. The RealReal will usually do this step for you, and eBay has an authenticity guarantee program for higher-priced items on its platform.

Ask for More Photos

Not everyone does this, but if you have your eye on a secondhand bag and don’t want to go through the hassle of refurbishing, I suggest asking for more photos. Most resellers I’ve encountered have been open to posting or sending more pictures of the piece I want. This step is for your peace of mind, especially if the price of the bag you want is a splurge. Ask for more close-up, detailed shots around the hardware of the bag (as it tends to be where a bag might be worn) and any sections that might seem damaged. This helps me with my decision-making process for any secondhand purchase.

Negotiate Your Price

I do this every time; it’s part of the thrill to me. Be respectful of the seller, and bid a reasonable price to bargain. Dool shared that Depop provides various percentages and dollar amounts you can select that are generally reasonable. Shoppers also have the option to send a custom amount. “Before sending an offer, messaging with the seller to align on an offer price is also recommended,” said Dool. “After an offer is placed, sellers have 24 hours to accept, decline, or send a counteroffer,” he added.

Winnie Harlow grew up around cars, though she didn't get her actual driver's license until last year. "My mom is such a horrible driver, so I was terrified to drive," Harlow tells me on a Zoom call ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. "If I find a vendor that has one item I like, I'll click on that vendor, and they're probably going to have a whole slew of other things from that same collection [or brand]," she says. Plus, once you've done some searching, the suggested items at the bottom of the page become more personalized to your interests. For instance, she has been sourcing Alberta Ferretti to satiate her interest in boho fashion instead of Chloé, given how ubiquitous Chloé's been since Chemena Kamali made her debut for the French brand. That way, you still get high-quality designer pieces without any of the surge pricing associated with virality.

Harlow's closet is flush with finds like that, too, but they take searching, sometimes even for years. "I have these really beautiful Christian Dior boots. They're red with gold detailing of [that says] CD on the knees," she tells me. "I've been looking for these boots for about four years, and I haven't been able to find my size," she continues. "I actually didn't find my size—I opted for a size smaller, because everything has been like, three, four, or five sizes small—but I found one [pair] that was one size smaller, and I just went for it." Ecstatic is the word she used to describe that feeling. "I was so happy when they came in," she says.

Sleek, minimal and impossibly cool, it’s the kind of jacket I find myself reaching for over blazers right now—easygoing yet elevated and perfect for the unpredictable spring weather.

Of course, I wasn’t looking for just any leather bomber. I had a specific shape in mind: voluminous through the body, cinched at the hem and with a high neckline to give it that slightly cocooned silhouette. A few weeks of diligent searching followed; my secondhand-shopping method always involves a bit of patience and plenty of platform-hopping. Secondhand shopping is a labour of love, which is part of the appeal, and when it comes to shopping for leather in particular, it’s always my preferred route. Nearly every leather piece I own—jackets, belts, boots—has been sourced secondhand. Not only is leather incredibly durable, but as a longtime vegetarian, it’s also the only way I can reconcile my love for the material. I still get the chic look and feel, but with a little less guilt attached.

It’s 6.25 a.m., and my alarm is blaring. I silence my phone, intent on keeping a few more minutes to myself.

But it’s not sleep I’m desperate to return to. It’s scrolling through the promising pages of vintage Bally on eBay that have occupied my waking moments. I just need five more minutes to bid, to browse, to dream. Like so many in the fashion industry, my love for secondhand shopping runs deep. There’s a thrill in tracking down a rare find, a rush in outbidding a competitor at the last second and a smug satisfaction in knowing you’ve secured a designer gem for a fraction of its original price. It’s exhilarating—sometimes even addictive.

And with today’s shopping climate—the fast-fashion boom, luxury price hikes, declining quality, a collective nostalgia and a push towards individualism—secondhand shopping serves our evolving needs better than ever before. Fashion psychologist Carolyn Mair explains the growing popularity of secondhand shopping and its natural fit in our dopamine-driven world. "Secondhand shopping provides a dopamine-driven thrill. The excitement of discovering unique, high-value items at bargain prices triggers the brain’s reward system," she says.

Any seasoned thrifter knows the high that comes from spotting a designer bag tucked away in a charity shop or stumbling upon a mislabeled gem on eBay, void of other bidders. "The unpredictability of charity shops and resale platforms creates a sense of adventure, reinforcing the desire to return for more treasure hunts," Mair continues. "This psychological reward system makes secondhand shopping highly addictive and enjoyable."

For me, shopping pre-loved started with childhood charity-shop trips with my mother. Back then, it was a practical necessity—essentials only, a means to an end. But today, a successful thrift haul sparks conversations with colleagues and fellow vintage aficionados that can fuel us for days. What’s changed between now and then? Well, lots. The perception of secondhand has transformed: what was once a quiet, budget-conscious decision is now a status symbol that can tell others you possess a deeper appreciation of fashion’s history and hold environmental ethics above fleeting trends. Simultaneously, accessibility and variety have rocketed.

The secondhand fashion industry has undergone a glossy rebrand over the past two decades. "Whereas it used to be mainly through charity shops and flea markets, we’re now seeing curated online marketplaces like The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective and Depop, as well as more affordable options like Vinted and eBay," says Mair. "The digitalisation of resale has made it more accessible, transparent and socially acceptable." These platforms, designed like social media apps, fit seamlessly into our daily scrolls—just a few more icons on an already overused home screen.

Whilst secondhand shopping options have never been so prolific, it’s hardly a new phenomenon. However, set against the backdrop of an ever-churning algorithm, consumers are partaking in secondhand shopping with renewed fervour to push back against the micro-trend cycle that would otherwise dictate a fashion season. In an era where personal style is starting to trump fleeting trends (all signs are pointing to the end of quiet luxury), vintage has become the anti-fast fashion movement—the true marker of individualism.

In 2025, breaking the algorithm has become a movement in itself. Echoed throughout the larger fashion zeitgeist, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons have challenged traditional trend cycles with their dishevelled, nonchalant take on femininity, using a wide body of references that subvert the samey styles that some of their competitors are producing. Erica Wright, founder of Sourcewhere, expands on this, stating, "2025 is set to be the year of personal curation—less about following trends, more about finding pieces that feel like long-term investments. Whether it’s a pair of sold-out shoes from The Row, a vintage coat from Alaïa or an old Celine bag that’s been out of production for years, customers are thinking beyond the season and focusing on what will hold true value in their wardrobe."

Celebrities, too, are embracing vintage like never before. "In a world of mass production, wearing rare, one-of-a-kind archival pieces allows celebrities to differentiate themselves, reinforcing their individuality and status whilst promoting sustainability," says Mair. "Because archival pieces are exclusive, they enhance perceived value, making them seem more desirable."

Miley Cyrus's 2024 Grammy's performance look—a 2002 Bob Mackie dress—dominated fashion headlines for days, whilst Kylie Jenner’s archival Alaïa autumn/winter 1991 piece at Paris Couture Week sent social media into a frenzy—citing runway images of Naomi Campbell wearing it the first time around alongside Jenner in the dress. Mair continues, "Celebrities wearing archival fashion position themselves as tastemakers who appreciate fashion’s heritage rather than blindly following trends. This resonates with fans and consumers, driving renewed demand for past collections and reinforcing the idea that great fashion transcends time."

And, of course, brands are capitalising on our nostalgic yearnings. Enter the surge of designer bag reissues—Louis Vuitton’s 2000s Murakami collection, Dior’s re-released Saddle Bag and Prada’s Re-Edition line are just a few examples. "Re-editions allow brands to capitalise on nostalgia, sustainability and exclusivity whilst reinforcing their heritage," Mair explains. "As fashion trends cycle back, luxury houses revive past designs to meet demand for vintage-inspired pieces. The growing appeal of archival fashion, fuelled by social media and celebrity endorsements, has made re-editions a smart way to tap into emotional connections and investment-driven purchasing behaviours."

As nostalgic trends flood the runways, scrolling through Depop to find the real thing feels like the obvious move. For those with a penchant for '90s fashion, securing an original piece rather than a reproduction is the ultimate score. Rachel Reavley, strategic partner and advisor at secondhand shopping platform Hardly Ever Worn It notes, "As retail prices for luxury goods continue to rise, many shoppers [are turning] to resale for access to coveted items at (potentially) lower prices. Brands like Khaite and Hermès, which produce in limited quantities, benefit from this scarcity-driven demand."

Our attitude towards secondhand has evolved, and so have our shopping preferences. Wright explains: "In the early 2000s, It bags like the Fendi Baguette, Balenciaga City and Dior Saddle were tied to celebrity culture and seasonal hype. Today, the emphasis is on understated luxury and timeless design. Consumers are prioritising lasting value and personal significance over fleeting trends. Shoppers now seek items that are unique yet enduring—vintage Hermès bags in Barenia and Box leather, iconic '90s Prada coats and rare, well-crafted accessories that stand apart."

I asked the Who What Wear UK team what secondhand treasures they’re currently hunting for, and they gave me a wonderful range of answers. Social media assistant Annie Wheatland-Clinch is searching for Y2K military jackets and circa-2004 Balenciaga whilst also keeping an eye out for polka-dot prints to shop a 2025 trend for less. Client success manager Jerrylyn Saguiped tracked down a dress for her wedding reception next month via Vinted; senior branded content editor Rebecca Rhys-Evans (known in the office for her extensive collection of secondhand designer bags) has her eye out for another, and editor-in-chief Hannah Almassi is on an eternal quest for a pair of crystal-embellished Gina shoes.

With 274K followers, influencer Karen Blanchard has built a platform around sourcing and styling vintage, a testament to the shift in perception around the hobby. Favouring in-person shopping experiences over online options, she tells me that she finds her best buys in the men’s sections, naming a tailcoat, brown tweed blazer and moto jacket amongst her favourite purchases. Meanwhile, Depop seller Pascale Davies specialises in designer items "as the quality is often higher, and finding something that would have originally been sold for a fortune at a fraction of the price still gives [me] such a thrill." But reasons for choosing to shop secondhand vary across the board.

If you were to rifle through my wardrobe, you’d quickly find that most of my collection is pre-loved. In my early years working in fashion, I relied on vintage finds to build a wardrobe that felt aspirational. Today, I shop secondhand for a different reason: to eschew trends that don't resonate with my style and instead invest in pieces that hold their value—financially and stylistically. My current wish list? A Jil Sander pencil skirt and a pair of peep-toe Pradas.

Reavley tells me that a few key brands are dominating sales on Hardly Ever Worn It right now. For the moment at least, brands that epitomise the quiet-luxury aesthetic continue to experience firm interest, as sales of Hermès products are up 24% this year compared to last, whilst The Row has grown by 33% and Max Mara is up 28%. Experiencing a swell of popularity, Khaite has had a huge 88% spike, and Toteme is up by 50%—a significant shift compared to previous years.

Secondhand shopping is a wide and varied field, and if it’s not something you've done before, it can certainly feel a little overwhelming. If you'd prefer your first taste to be from the comfort of your sofa, then Depop, eBay, Hardly Ever Worn It, Vestiaire Collective, Vinted and Soucewhere are all great places to start. But how to go about it? Well, I’ve put together some tips from a stylish cohort that have made their living from buying and selling on the secondhand market. Scroll on for their advice.

How to Shop Secondhand Online:

Work with the algorithm: Use the algorithm to your advantage, recommends Depop’s in-house trends specialist Agus Panzoni. "As with social media platforms, following your favourite sellers can build your algorithms and create a feed that is specifically tailored to you, with sellers curating their shops dependent on their style and aesthetic. Depop is its own community, and following top sellers and engaging in their content means that you get the most from your buying experience by finding those with similar styles to your own."

Be specific with your search: "Depop’s search function is literal, so make the most of it by searching for specific terms rather than looking far and wide. "If you are looking for a pair of jeans, specify the colour, shape and cut to guarantee [you find] exactly what you are looking for," says Panzoni

Don’t be afraid to negotiate: "Offers between 5-20% below the listed price are the most likely to be accepted by sellers, and many will be open to discussing deals, particularly if their item has been on sale for a while without anyone purchasing it," Panzoni adds.

Pay attention to measurements: According to Karen Blanchard, "When shopping online, I always recommend paying attention to the measurements. Take a piece [you already own] that's a similar style and fit, and measure the shoulders, cuff length, inseam, waistband [or whichever measurements are applicable]. Then compare it to the secondhand piece you’ve found online. One size 10 won’t be the same as the other, so this is a trick I always use."

How to Shop Secondhand In-Person

Hone in on the details: "I always recommend paying attention to the smell and staining [of an item], as well as making sure it has all of the zippers and buttons, etc. This will help ensure it’s worth the asking price. I prefer vintage shopping in person so that I can feel the texture, see the true colour, try it on and get a better feel for the quality," explains Blanchard.

Take your time: In-person secondhand shopping can be a labour of love, and some of the best items in my wardrobe were found tucked away in corners of otherwise uninspiring charity shops. To ensure you walk away with something you love, take the time to rifle through every inch of the place. In my experience, it’s rare to walk into a secondhand shop and find that perfect item straight away.

Tonight, just days after performing at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Brooklyn, Cher will return to the spotlight to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside Foreigner, Mary J. Blige, and Dave Matthews Band. Of course, Zendaya is in attendance to pay homage.

Our love for '90s fashion knows no bounds here at Who What Wear, which is why we were all ecstatic when we saw a whole host of '90s minimalism–inspired silhouettes and styles all over the recent runways, from column skirts and gray tailoring to relaxed straight-leg jeans, slip dresses, and boatneck silhouettes. Designers such as Proenza Schouler, Gucci, and Staud brought fresh iterations to these silhouettes. There's no doubt we're constantly looking back to the '90s runways for inspiration (Calvin Klein S/S 99 and Prada S/S 95 are some of our favorites), as they serve as good starting points when looking for the perfect pieces to add to your forever wardrobe.

After months of preparation, first-time and veteran attendees alike have started to arrive, and with their appearances come answers to our burning questions about who made the 2024 guest list and what they'll wear to commemorate the moment. One such vet is Kendall Jenner, who dug into fashion's archives to once again *deliver* on Met Gala night.

With a dress code of The Garden of Time, inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story, and an exhibition titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, we've been expecting nature to play a significant role in the evening's vast selection of looks. But not everyone went the obvious floral-print route (thankfully). Instead, Jenner—who chose an archival Givenchy gown from Alexander McQueen's F/W 99 haute couture collection for the house—noted in an interview with Vogue that the kismet nature of her look is what related it to Ballard's short story, calling it "meant to be." She stumbled upon the black, strong-shouldered, low-cut gown while knee-deep in Met Gala research, falling for it immediately but knowing that it could easily not work for her or fashion's biggest night. She would be the first human ever to wear it given that the 25-year-old dress was only donned by a mannequin for the couture show. To protect its integrity, she wouldn't be able to adjust the fit of it at all. Luckily, despite its age and the fact that it was only tailored for a bust, it "just fit," she said in the interview.

The dress, according to a press release, required 500 hours of hand embroidery and features more than 100,000 beads and sequins. To accompany it, Jenner wore a long, ethereal wig fit with two almost fairy-like braids, as well as Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. Jennifer Atilémile is the definition of a woman who does it all. A true multi-hyphenate, she is a model, writer, creative, activist, and intellectual. As an editor in residence, she gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry.

If the latest runways are telling us anything, it's that this is going to be a maximalist summer. After years of quiet luxury, stealth wealth, and the same copy-paste minimalist uniform, fashion is finally getting loud again, and I think that's a political act as much as it is a stylistic one.

At a time when so many women are being told, both literally and metaphorically, to shrink themselves, maximalist dressing is a direct rebuke. I've written at length about how we should be using fashion to take up space, especially as a curvy woman, so maximalist dressing, bold colors, and clashing prints are welcomed and intentional. In a world that keeps trying to flatten us into algorithm-friendly beigeness, dressing loudly is one of the most personal forms of resistance (and joy) we have.

My birthday recently passed, and I'm never one to shy away from having a fun time. We just moved into our new home, so I thought, Why not celebrate with a theme that honors my love for maximalist dressing? For me, maximalism isn't just a trend cycle. It's a lifestyle. It's the way I've always wanted to live and always have.

There's a reason the conversation has shifted toward the idea that owning something nobody else has is now the ultimate luxury. It's a subtle flex to have taste that money can't buy. And it's just that—you don't have to have money to have style. Style is something you learn through life experiences, and it's reflective of the fashion mistakes you've made and learned from and how you've evolved as your taste changes. It's something that comes through trial and error and not playing it safe.

Anyone can wear something loud, but to wear it well is an art. A maximalist wardrobe tells me a story about the person wearing it. It tells me you've traveled, that you've picked up jewelry in random bazaars, fur coats in Brick Lane vintage shops, and laces and silks in Paris. But it can also mean you dream of traveling, that you've scoured the internet and unearthed one-of-a-kind bargains on eBay, Depop, and Etsy that nobody else will be wearing at the party.

I've been lucky enough to travel for my job, but before that, I was also scouring the internet for pieces I couldn't find anywhere else.

That's the thing about maximalist dressing that I think people miss: It's not about spending more. It's about looking more—more carefully, more curiously, more intentionally. The best maximalist wardrobes are built over years, not in one shopping spree.

They're archives of a life.

Part of why it was so hard to part with parts of my wardrobe when I moved was because every piece had a story to tell. My clothing held memories of places I'd been, who I once was, and who I maybe one day wanted to be. That's what I love about fashion: expressing myself through how I dress.

Where I Source Mine

Living in L.A. now, I'm surrounded by an abundance of vintage pieces. Whether it's estate sales from Old Hollywood stars, immaculately curated boutiques, or vintage shops I stumble upon during a weekend brunch and neighborhood stroll, L.A. really has it all. You just need to know where to look.

I still believe in gatekeeping. I genuinely think the best way to find the diamonds in the rough is to stumble upon them yourself. That serendipity is part of what makes a piece feel like yours. But since you asked, here's a little list of some of my favorite spots in L.A. to shop vintage, specifically for the kind of maximalist, one-of-a-kind pieces you won't find anywhere else.

Cannonball and Tilly

Its motto is essentially "We don't sell subtle," which tells you everything you need to know. Go check it out for yourself.

Recess LA

This place is a maximalist paradise. It's got the best selection of eclectic jewelry and other accessories. There's no beige to be found.

Ciao Cherub

Tucked away in Los Feliz, Ciao Cherub is a beautifully eclectic mix of high-end vintage, designer pieces, jewelry, and home décor. It's colorful, fun, and a little more wallet-friendly.

Aralda Vintage

It's one of the best vintage stores in L.A., in my personal opinion. If you get an appointment, make a day of it in Beachwood Canyon. Either wait for a table at the Beachwood Cafe, or get the tuna salad at The Oaks, then meander up to Aralda and shop till you drop. My fiancé bought me a beautiful Paco Rabanne necklace from here. That was his eye, so imagine what yours could find.

Squaresville

If you're in Los Feliz, walk over to Vermont Ave and find Squaresville. It's a little vintage paradise. Grab a coffee at Maru, then wander over, or grab a happy-hour martini at Figaro. You'll walk out with something iconic, and I mean it because it'll be one of one.

Lidow Archive

Lidow Archive is a rental fantasyland of over 8000 pieces founded by Haile Lidow, who started collecting as a teenager from L.A. flea markets. If you want eclectic maximalism, this is your spot. It's got a market on June 14. I know I'll be there.

Gift of Garb

This is one of those rare shops that feel like a personal discovery every time you visit because the inventory turns over constantly. I've taken some of my pieces there to sell on consignment. You can find the quieter luxury pieces there, but I love that you can always find the loud ones too. It rewards the regular customer and the patient browser, which, if you ask me, is exactly what good vintage shopping should do.

Replika Vintage

I haven't been to Replika Vintage, but I'm told I must visit, and I think if I did, I'd add it to this list.

That's the list, and I'm sure I'll regret not including a dozen more. Please let me know if I've left some off the list. I'm always looking for great places to shop. But the truth is the best vintage shopping in L.A. and the best maximalist wardrobe aren't just about knowing where to shop. It's about knowing who you are, your style, and how you want to communicate that with the world.

A wardrobe is definitely something you build over time, and I can't wait to have an epic one to hand down to my future children.

As for me? I celebrated my birthday this year with a Slim Aarons-meets-Palm Royale garden party at our new home. Treasures of NYC

A scroll through the Instagram page of Treasures of NYC is what I imagine walking through Carrie Bradshaw's closet would be like. In other words, it's overflowing with beaded Fendi baguettes and Y2K-era Dior pumps. Founded in 2017 by a pair of young New Yorkers, Treasures was born out of a desire for vintage that was decidedly non-stuffy. Once the city started to open again post-pandemic, the owners came up with the concept of the Clubhouse, which is a by-appointment-only showroom in SoHo that gives customers a chance to shop the collection in person.

What Goes Around Comes Around

If you've ever looked at a celebrity wearing a vintage outfit and wondered where they bought it, chances are high that the answer is What Goes Around Comes Around. The bicoastal boutique with outposts in Beverly Hills and SoHo is somewhat of an A-list destination for rare designer handbags and highly collectible ready-to-wear pieces. Its list of regulars includes Hailey Bieber, Kim Kardashian, and Rihanna, just to name a few. Shopping at WGACA also comes with the security of knowing each piece is meticulously authenticated and vetted by its team who have over 30 years of experience in the world of vintage luxury.

Desert Vintage

Desert Vintage was founded in 1974 on the eclectic boulevard of Fourth Avenue in Tucson, Arizona. In July 2012, Salima Boufelfel and Roberto Cowan took over the already established Desert Vintage with the desire to curate an undeniably stylish and eclectic mix of true vintage items for both men and women. Desert Vintage has come to be known as a great source for one-of-a-kind, museum-worthy pieces.
