The spring racing season has officially begun, and although it's meant to be about the horse races, we all know deep down it's about the fashion too. From the pretty cocktail dresses to the fascinators, it's an exciting excuse to spend a day on the green. 

While we love ruminating over the perfect outfit and getting down to Randwick or Flemington ourselves, we're curious to see what our favourite local celebrities are wearing to every event. So far, Stakes Day (October 6) brought us some superb perspex shoes on Jesinta Franklin, and the Caulfield Cup (October 20) showed us Gemma Ward in a pastel suit by Bianca Spender.

While the David Jones showcase always gets us excited about the next up-and-coming runway trends, it also guarantees a stellar red carpet every year. The spring summer launch took place in Sydney last night and brought together all of Australia's most fashionable people under one roof. 

David Jones's newest ambassador, Victoria Lee, was a true highlight, wearing a black plunging gown, while Jessica Gomes opted for a white off-the-shoulder look. The red carpet also played host to Adut Akech, Elle Ferguson and Isabel Lucas, who all stole the spotlight. The David Jones runway show marks a change in the seasons every year. Although still held in winter, the spring summer showcase really gets us thinking about the warmer months and what we're going to be wearing come spring. It's a time to forget about coat shopping, and start dreaming up our perfect warm-weather wardrobe.

Held in Sydney's Fox Studios last night, the David Jones SS18 runway showcased the best upcoming trends, that we'll all be wearing very soon. Modelled by David Jones ambassadors Victoria Lee and Jessica Gomes, as well as local star Adut Akech, the pieces featured spanned from activewear to resort wear, Spring Racing, and everyday office attire.

In terms of the Spring Racing looks, it's clear that the trend this year will be midi-length cocktail dresses, incorporating feminine silhouettes and bold colour-blocking. For resort wear, it's all about neutral linens, wide leg pants and draped shirts. 

One surprising trend was the Western-inspired looks. It seems we're taking the cowboy boot trend of winter into the next season with a lot of earthy-toned and soft-pink pieces, mixed with fringed crochet and beadwork. With this trend it's all about exotic prints, jungle flora and fauna, and a 1980s vibe.

Our overall favourite piece? It was the the khaki green dress by Bianca Spender, as seen below on Jessica Gomes. We can't wait to get our hands on this and wear it to the races next season. While New York Fashion Week is in full swing, it’s fair to say that for those of us not located in New York City, it can feel a bit... distant. Literally. Especially all the way from Australia, where our seasons are opposite to our style-sisters overseas, New York fashion can tend to feel a little misplaced.

Granted, Fashion Week street style does provide us with great inspiration for what to wear in the coming seasons—but it can be hard to put this into perspective when we’re still in our last month of summer. After all, who can say whether or not the trends we’re seeing this week will still feel exciting come winter?

So, needless to say, we were more than excited to see a number of Australian designers show up to Fashion Week in the best way possible. With Alice McCall presenting for the first time at NYFW followed by Dion Lee the same day, New York City began to get a taste of Aussie fashion.

If there was any doubt about the trends we're bringing overseas, Zimmermann’s day five show confirmed that Australian designers deserve a spot in the international style scene. Drawing the attention of trendsetters, both Australian and otherwise, these shows were definitely successful, garnering attention from the likes of Victoria Lee, Olivia Palermo, Jessica Hart, and Katie Holmes to name a few.

The David Jones A/W 18 presentation was last night, and unsurprisingly, it drew some of Australia’s most fashionable together. Always a fair predictor of what the upcoming season has in store, models among the ranks of Jessica Gomes, Victoria Lee, Mali Koopman, and Jenella Powell showcased trends we can expect to see more of as the seasons change. While there were many amazing style moments on the runway featuring dark, floral prints and bold colours, some amazing things were happening off the runway as well.

After all, it makes sense that the guests of such an event would have a personal interest in style as well. Insiders in fashion, as well as other influencers and celebrities didn’t let the opportunity go to waste, dressing to impress on the red carpet.
