Sometimes there's a trend that's just so bad that it's good. For me this season, it's the "ugly" sneakers you've spotted on many a street style star over the last few months. I have a feeling anyone but my dad (who really does wear shoes that look like this) would offer nothing more than a puzzled look when pressed about the rise tech sneakers, but there's something so charming about them I can't resist.

While I admit the clunky soles and unpolished details could easily skew unflattering, on the feet of fashion's top trendsetters, they feel surprisingly cool. But what's the real appeal? In part, the shoes give me flashes of nostalgia for the chunky Sketchers I wore as a typical '90s child. And as we see the '80s power suit and '90s grunge resurfacing these days, so too have retro sneakers come back to haunt us.

But besides a love of the things we wore when we were young, the sneakers are part of a greater shift across the industry. Over the past few seasons, we've seen fashion move away from the pervasive minimalism of the earlier aughts, skewing into two distinct directions: a romantic ultra-feminism, and a playful, referential vein that seems to be constantly poking fun at itself and the fashion industry as a whole (the Vetements effect, if we'd so desire to give it a name). These sneakers toe the thin line—while there will be those who can't stand the trend, that quirkiness will draw others in. So are you ready to take the plunge? We're showing off a few ways to style them below, and then shopping out our favorite pairs.

Seek out a professional.

Take your shoes to a cobbler to have them professionally stretched. They have leather solutions and industrial machines that can get the job done in no time. If you’ve invested in an expensive pair of shoes, you might want to enlist the help of an expert before trying any other method.

The Spurs may have defeated the Warriors, but it's no surprise that Beyoncé came out on top of the fashion game.

Bella Hadid has given us many new trends—from step-hem reconstructed jeans, to chainmail, to teaching us how to wear our tracksuits out in public, and now, camouflage cargo pants. It’s an interesting trend to resurface (we thought these were so left behind), but we can put it down to our obsession with all things ’90s and the early ‘00s. The era I grew up in is quite clearly having a resurgence, and with the noughties, came cargo pants. I have distinct memories of Jennifer Lopez wearing them, so naturally, I had to have them too. Unfortunately, I never looked as chic in camo as Bella Hadid, which gives me all the more reason to give the trend a second run.

Bella wore her pair loose and on the hips, and added a crop top with a velour bomber jacket and lace-up heels. The lace-up heels give it a sexy edge, and make it feel more dressed up. If she’d opted for a pair of white sneakers, the look would feel decidedly more relaxed (in a ‘90s hip-hop kinda way).

It’s always good to know that even superstars like Rihanna are just like us. We did warn you that this DHL T-shirt from Vetements was going to generate chatter. The fashion label is led by Demna Gvasalia, who just debuted his first Balenciaga offering for A/W 16 to great acclaim, and he is no stranger to courting a smidgen of controversy. Demna's the man who has sparked a thousand copycat hoodies, a visionary who eschews regular models in favour of his friends and muses for the runway, a designer who literally turns socks into boots, persuades us all that a hiking jacket is a chic choice and is set on "disrupting" the industry further with new proposals for catwalk show times and manufacturing schedules.

So while this DHL-emblazoned T-shirt (rendered in the courier company's instantly recognisable bumblebee yellow and bright red) has been wholeheartedly picked up by fashion types who love nothing better than a ironic nod to mass culture, there are others who do not feel the same way. Well, fashion wouldn't be fashion if everyone agreed…

In addition to an actual DHL exec taking the tee out for an ironic spin, the man who originally created the branding, Helge Reider, has penned a piece for The Financial Times, declaring that "selling a T-shirt with a DHL logo for £185 is crazy. Buying it for this price is beyond reason… I can’t see any creativity in printing a well-known brand on a T-shirt. What is genius is persuading people to freak out about a simple T-shirt. I give the designers and marketing people at Vetements credit if they can sell an 'ugly' T-shirt for £185. It’s totally nuts." Leading blogger Disney Roller Girl responded on Twitter saying, "Ridiculous! FT should've had a counter-argument—this guy doesn't understand how fashion works."

This is probably why fashion moments are indeed that: a finite period of time where something like the tee in question appeals to the right people in the right frame of mind. Take the Vetements-stamped anoraks, worn uniformly by a legion of street style photographers throughout the recent fashion weeks as another example. In reaction to the trend, a pop-up e-commerce store has arrived solely stocking a parody of this one item, only this version of the raincoat has a more Internet-appropriate adaptation of the brand name printed on the back: Vetememes. 

Fashion designers have long been obsessed by branding (Marc Jacobs is a big Coca-Cola fan, for example) and this season is nothing if not logo-heavy. So who decides what constitutes an "attractive" one or an "ugly" one? A "meaningful" one or a "throwaway" one? You do. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so if, for some reason, you find the £185 jersey crew-neck too tempting to pass on, buy it. If you don't, walk on by. But as we now know all too well—what with the floral dresses and reworked denim flying off shelves—Vetements wares (no matter how madcap or how plain) wait for no man. We almost cannot move across cyberspace for bumping into excellent shots of well-dressed girls wearing bomber jackets. Our wardrobes are very content. Why? Well, as London Fashion Week's designers have proven today, amongst all the newness on offer for Autumn/Winter 2016 there are the common threads of winning trends that we've already woven into our day-to-day looks for some time. That's flared trousers, wallpaper florals and chokers. They're three elements the fashion crew can still not get enough of and Emilia Wickstead deftly assembled them into new and exciting combinations for her show today.

Her couture-like tailoring is famously excellent, so when the red carpet-favourite turns her hand to jumbo bell-bottoms you know your pins are in safe hands. Emilia's were extra-swishy thanks to full panels in the back of the leg--they'll be very popular on the street style circuit, even on a drizzly day like this.

As for florals, hers were rich jacquards that looked the upholstery of a smoky 1960s jazz bar definitely can be worn all year round thanks to clever light/dark colour combinations and cheeky combinations. And the chokers: they were cut wide in matching fabrics, a trick you can certainly take as an upgrade to the slip of black silk you've no doubt mastered already.

The fashion industry's relationship with logos, branding and monogramming is a bit of a love/hate one. Right now these stamps are back in town—in a BIG way—but for a long time the idea of wearing conspicuous marks of any label was considered gauche and cheap. That was way back when stealth minimalism seized the runways (hello Phoebe Philo's debut Céline collection in 2009!) and even handbags only whispered of their design homeland in the smallest, subtlest ways.

A few seasons ago, radical upstarts started hijacking the recognisable motifs and brand names of our visual style culture, using them to emblazon cheeky novelty goods, and the slogo—that's a hybrid slogan and logo—was born. Take Brian Lichtenberg's Homies or Ballin tees—both a naughty take on Hermès and Balmain, both flew out of stores.

Now high-fashion designers have done a 360, reclaiming this important part of a brand's DNA for themselves. Meaning that for S/S 16 J.W.Anderson printed Loewe's name all over dresses and sporty bags, Chanel had plenty of signature double CC action covering dresses and accessories alike, and Nicolas Ghesquière employed his fashion house's classic logo for LV-monogrammed biker jackets—as well as bags and shoes—at Louis Vuitton.

Then there are the creatives who are taking more common logos and reinterpreting them—buzzy brand Vetements is offering you a yellow DHL T-shirt (it's already sold out in two sizes!) or the fact that luxury e-stores like Net-a-Porter have Nike swooshes or Adidas Originals trefoils nestled amongst traditionally high-fashion wares.

Let's get one thing straight: Ditsy florals have never been cool. They have moments where they are more favourable than other florals and periods where they can be found all over the runways. But really, in terms of fashion cred, they're about as basic a print as you can get before hitting the classic navy and white stripe. 

So it was a feat of sheer ingenuity and skill that one label could flip this idea on its head, only to create a ditsy floral dress that the hippest of the hip had to have last season. Of course, it was the Parisian radicals Vetements. For the uninitiated, this is the breakout brand of 2016 comprised of seven (almost) anonymous designers—one of whom, Demna Gvasalia, has taken the reins at Balenciaga, replacing Alexander Wang, and is poised to present a debut collection during Paris Fashion Week this February. You are going to hear a lot about Gvasalia in the coming weeks.

Of course, this was no ordinary dress dotted in pretty blooms—just in the same way that the Vetements must-have vintage jeans were no ordinary denim hand-me-downs. This frock was back-to-front with a faux crew neck sweatshirt slashed into the neckline and draping out of the hem like a train and it sold like hotcakes despite a high price tag. Now stores are clearing the rails ready to stock the 2.0 versions. Silhouettes, prints and detailing may have been significantly updated to feel new but you can still tell this is a Vetements creation from 20 paces… or further if you're a street style photographer with a long lens.

"At one show last season we saw three senior fashion editors all wearing the same floral red sweatshirt dress, all bought from us, and we had a ‘moment’ as realised the collection had secured some influential supporters," explains Matchesfashion.com's buying director, Natalie Kingham. "We have already had international interest through our MyStylist and private shopping teams – in particular for the ruffle-trimmed floral-print dress, the exclusive green metallic dress and the tracksuits."

We’ve highlighted the real salaries of fashion editors in the past, and many of you said the actual numbers were much lower than you expected. With that in mind, what can fashion editor salaries actually get you in New York City (where the majority of the industry lives)? Well, we did some digging to figure out just what you can get in NYC at different career levels.

We used reports from Glassdoor to find the average salaries of anonymous Condé Nast employees, used Prime Pay to figure out what those salaries are after taxes, and turned to the site Credit Counseling to determine that you should spend roughly 30% of your salary (after taxes!) on housing, 15% on food, and 5% on clothing. (Note we did not take into account transportation, utilities, and savings into this consideration for this specific piece).

Below, scope out our diagrams that show what an editorial assistant, associate editor, editor, senior editor, and director can spend per month to live in the Big Apple. The numbers may actually shock you. (Note that the suggestions for how editors should budget are general and just rough estimates).

If you have just over $600 for rent, you're going to need roommates—a few. According Zillow and Craigslist, for $600, you would need to share a room in Manhattan in places like the Bronx or have at least one roommate in places like Woodside, Queens. Since the food budget is tight, lavish meals are out of the question—perhaps one nice $50 meal per month. The rest of your budget will be spent cooking easy meals for yourself and bringing an affordable lunch to work. With only a $104 clothing budget, brands like Forever 21, as well as the abundance of NYC thrift stores, will make up most of your closet. 

While $1000 per month on rent is a nice increase from the editorial assistant budget, it's not quite enough to live by yourself in most of Manhattan. However, according to Zillow, there are one-bedroom and studio apartments available for $1000 above 138th St., as well as in parts of Brooklyn and Queens. With a $505 food budget, you're able to eat out more than you were before at cute bistros and eateries that have a $$ price listing. Bringing your lunch to work daily is still your smartest move.
