If there’s one thing we know well at Who What Wear, it’s jeans. Day in, day out, we cover the biggest denim trends, the best new fits and the brands fashion people consistently come back to. This winter in NYC is off to a frigid start. Temperatures have been reaching arctic levels despite it not even being a month into the season. While some are bundling up under layers and layers of sweaters and coats, others—specifically NYC fashion people who "get it"—are stepping out in chic ensembles that look anything but bulky. You may be watching them as they confidently strut the streets, thinking they must be freezing, but what you don't see hidden under their lightweight coats and sweaters is a thin layer of clothing that's secretly trapping the heat. It's called the Heattech shirt, and it's become the only way to survive a New York winter while still looking cute.

The Heattech shirt is an under-$25 thermal garment from Uniqlo that comes in gorgeous neutrals like chocolate brown and ivory as well as bold colors like cherry red and dark green. It's recommended for temperatures in the 20s to the 50s, as the fabric is a bit thinner and doesn't feature a fleece lining like the Ultra Warm does.

I've been living in New York City for almost eight years, but it wasn't until last year, after a quick scroll on TikTok, that I learned Heattech was the trick to staying warm in the winter without looking like a marshmallow under a big coat. However, after just one wear on the coldest day (with a real feel of 12°), it became an absolute essential in my wardrobe.

Living on the East Coast, I’ve always had a surprisingly avoidant relationship with winter. I’m originally from Boston, so you’d think I’d be used to the cold from birth—but it’s actually been the opposite. It’s the season I dread most, and staying warm is something I have to think about very intentionally.

For years, whenever I asked friends how they manage to stay warm in the winter, the first words out of their mouths were always some version of “Uniqlo Heattech.” Tired of constantly complaining about the cold when it’s inevitable, I’m finally taking their advice—stocking up on pieces from both the Uniqlo Heattech and Pufftech lines.

Last winter, my determination to actually start bundling up in the winter started off by investing in insulated boots and a wool coat. Still, the coat alone never felt quite warm enough.

More recently, I came across a TikTok about how fashion people stay warm in wool coats, and Uniqlo came up again. The trick is to layer a Pufftech jacket underneath. It’s thin and lightweight, so it won’t add bulk, but it makes a surprisingly big difference in warmth.

Over the past month, the weather has been hinting at the arrival of summer with a couple of heatwaves and sunny spells. Now, the summer solstice is behind us, and we're settling into a new rhythm of consistently warm days. This weekend, temperatures are set to hit 30 degrees in the capital, and with the certainty of more hot days on the horizon, I quickly found myself looking for a dress to see me through the hottest days. The new Uniqlo : C collection is overflowing with everyday pieces that still feel incredibly elevated. Mostly thanks to the quality of the fabrics and modern yet timeless designs. On the collection, Waight Keller says, "I was most particular about the fabric when designing the collection. When you're working at a different price point, the way the fabric translates is very important to achieve the right silhouette, and so this was a critical part... really looking at what [fabrics] were going to create the most successful and beautiful result for the price." She continues, "I have to say I've been very impressed [with Uniqlo]. Things like the cottons, and the nylons, are of an exceptional level." High praise from someone who has worked with the most luxurious materials in the game.

And after a trip to Japan where I shopped at the world's largest Uniqlo, I feel like I was put onto the hype of the brand's unbeatable basics all over again. I could spend hours going from floor to floor, and if I didn't have a flight to catch, I probably would have. After all. what's not to love? Whether it's its classic and crisp Uniqlo U pieces or designer collaborations with JW Anderson or Marni, there's more to the retailer than first meets the eye.
