Parisian eyewear label Jimmy Fairly is disrupting the market with its sunglasses and opticals that have trend-forward silhouettes that read as luxury in both the aesthetic and the quality but ring up as affordable(-ish). I shouldn't be surprised when a party hosted by a high-jewelry brand in Los Angeles attracts hordes of A-listers, and yet I'm deeply impressed with the star-studded guest list Boucheron pulled off this week. To mark the opening of its first West Coast boutique on Rodeo Drive, the Parisian label hosted "A Cutting-Edge Journey Since 1858" at Harvey House, the mid-century John Lautner–designed home famously featured on Apple TV's The Studio.

Huddled at Harvey on Wednesday were the likes of Tracee Ellis Ross, Laura Dern, Julianne Moore, Natasha Lyonne, White Lotus star Charlotte Le Bon, Gia Coppola, Elaine Welteroth, and Stephanie Suganami—each positively dripping in Boucheron jewels. Always one step ahead of new-season trends, some of my favourite celebrities are already incorporating major autumn buys into their daily wardrobes this month. Stepping out wearing elegant autumn colours, actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Katie Holmes along with model Elsa Hosk are all readying themselves for the change of the season in the chicest way.

Whilst summer calls for colourful accessories—think coral, blue and yellow—the autumn months are a time for reeling things in and turning to those richer, more refined shades. Taking this on board, Ellis Ross elevated a casual trainers-and-blazer ensemble with a rich burgundy bag just last week. The front row at last night's Chanel Cruise 2024 show was like a who's who in Hollywood. There's a new kid on the block, and it already has an impressive following. That's right. On November 16, the Spanish luxury brand Loewe opened its flagship store in Los Angeles on Rodeo Drive with a star-studded celebration featuring models, influencers, actors, and more. 

Loewe is more than just a destination in L.A.'s most esteemed high-end fashion district; it's a complete brand experience. Shoppers will be delighted to discover the array of men's and women's ready-to-wear available in-store while reveling in a curated collection of furniture and artwork, including a painted wood rendering of Justin Bieber’s head and arms by the figure artist Paul Pfeiffer.

The brand's big L.A. debut comes on the heels of the reopening of its NYC flagship, but this special store has a distinctive West Coast feel. The new space—over 3700 square feet—takes its aesthetic cues from California's distinctive natural elements: the sea, sky, and earth. Up next, These Are The 2022 Trends I'm Trying Second-Hand. 

I have a confession to make. I’ve been guilty of neglecting my hair. Like so many others, I’d bought into the trope that coily, kinky and Afro hair was "difficult” and would need far more time than I was willing to invest to keep it healthy. After a rocky journey of poorly recommended relaxers, weaves, clip-in extensions and too much direct heat, it was during lockdown that I stripped everything back and decided to start over with my relationship with my hair.

While I was giving my natural hair the chance to recover and readopting the protective styles of my childhood (thank god for box braids), across the pond, a brand would be launching that would change the way we thought about celebrity-fronted brands and, in turn, Afro haircare.

Tracee Ellis Ross created Pattern with a core mission to serve the needs of the curly, coily and tight-textured community, to celebrate Black beauty and be an active space for uplifting and loving the community’s natural beauty. After 10 years of conducting her own market research and formulation, Ross launched Pattern in the U.S. in 2020—comprising an entire washday routine: shampoo, conditioner, mist and gel (plus styling tools and brushes)—but for those of us eagerly watching on social media, it would be two more years before we could finally (!) shop the range in Boots for ourselves.

I had the opportunity to road-test some of the line before the official launch, and it’s safe to say that I had plenty of thoughts, but trust me—it’s all good. There is often some trepidation about celebrity beauty launches and whether they will have the efficacy of an established brand, but Ross knows good curls.

My first thought was just how impressive the size of the range was. There are in fact five conditioners alone (three for thin to thick hair textures, an intensive and a leave-in conditioner), and my second thought was how good it smells. The usual curly hair favourites are present—coconut, avocado and jojoba oils, shea butter and aloe vera—but also the unexpected but refreshing additions of green matcha tea, Irish moss and chia seeds that make the range smell like, well, nothing I’ve really smelled before. I’m going to say the closest thing I can think of is "holiday skin.”

I started by washing my hair with the Cleansing Shampoo. As its a clarifying shampoo, it doesn't create the overly soapy, foamy lather we usually associate with deep cleaning, so I initially washed my hair twice to make sure it it was definitely clean. The formula has a light, non-sticky feeling with no residue, and before I even added any conditioner, my curls looked springier. A good start. 

Next, I opted for the Heavy Conditioner, and anyone with 4C curls like mine will appreciate that the conditioner bottle is far bigger than the shampoo one, as we know we’re going to liberally apply any kind of conditioner. At this point in my routine, I usually detangle with a wide-tooth comb, so I reached for a wet brush and noticed just how shiny and defined my curls were already. Not a knotty, soapy ball but glossy little spirals that, after years of aggressive straightening, I'm happy to see back in full force. 

After rinsing it out, I wanted to give the leave-in conditioner a try, and my preferred way of deep conditioning after a long time in braids is to use a heated cap to help the product better deeper permeate the hair shaft. After 20 minutes or so, I wasn't entirely sure just how deeply the conditioner had worked, but the next day would be the true test. 

Knowing I would be braiding my hair again the next day, I slept with my hair in twists to minimise tangling, an act that comes from years of eye-watering, comb-breaking experiences. As I waited with held breath for the inevitable moment my hairdresser would run a comb through my hair and hit a snag, instead, it slid through. Running my hands through my hair to verify just how easy the process was, I was happy to find that not only was my hair easier to tease, but it was softer too. Gone were the crunchy, frazzled ends that prompted me to switch to protective styles in the first place. 

Although I don't currently wear my hair in its natural Afro state every day, I'm keen to test the Strong Hold Gel (£25) to keep my edges and canerows tidy in the meantime (but it will have some way to go to rival the reliable Schwarzkopf Got2b Glued Gel). But overall, I'm surprised (and impressed) that Pattern managed to create an effective and easy routine to take the guesswork out of caring for Afro hair. It's a simple wash-condition-style regime that you can personalise for your own hair thickness, so no more one-size-fits-all products that are relegated to specialist shops. So here is something that I never thought I would say, but I'm actually looking forward to my next washday.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, Gucci creative director (and close pal of Harry Styles) Alessandro Michele threw a star-studded runway show on Hollywood Boulevard. And of course, everyone dressed for the occasion, including Dakota Johnson. Johnson—who recently starred in Michele's Gucci Beloved campaign alongside Styles, Diane Keaton, Serena Williams, and more friends of the house—frequently outfits herself in Gucci, but her look for last night's show could very well be her best one yet.

As an editor, candidly, I must admit that I have a love-hate relationship with award season. On one hand, I regularly roll my eyes when celebrities fail to follow the Met Gala theme or fail to conjure up the juicy VMA gossip I live off of. On the other hand, being able to cheer on the Emmy-nominated geniuses like Michaela Coel or see the work of some of the best stylists in the game is a delight. Finally, it should have a microemulsion smoothing system (a.k.a. a blend of oil and water) "to provide softness, control, and moisture by bonding to the cuticle for deep conditioning,” says the hairstylist. 

In conditioner formulas, it’s all about moisturizing the curls on a deeper level. "Look for hydrating ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, almond oil, olive oil, avocado oil, mango oil, and hydrolyzed protein like oat, wheat, silk or milk that penetrates the hair shaft to increase moisture content and smooth and prevent frizz,” says Petrut. "Rice protein is great because it strengthens hair fibers from oxidation caused by UV exposure, and soybean has essential fatty acids that boost moisture retention and add shine and softness.”

We had very few red carpet fashion moments to indulge in last year, but they will no doubt resume at some point in 2021—and we'll be there to cover them. Red carpet events are always a huge team effort, as they require hardworking stylists, tailors, makeup artists, and more, and the final product is always a glorious look for the fashion history books.

Looking ahead to the return of red carpet events—whenever that may be—I mined runway images to come up with some predictions about what celebrities will wear. For instance, I thought the sultry Versace S/S 21 collection was rife with dresses that Blake Lively would love, and Molly Goddard's show had Gemma Chan's name written all over it. This intricate gown from the Chanel Métiers d'Art 2021 show is giving me Natalie Portman vibes. 

Christopher John Rogers is a master of both color and shapes, and this S/S 21 dress proves it. I can picture Zendaya in this cheery number.

If I had to predict who would choose this Schiaparelli S/S 21 minidress, I'd go with supermodel Gisele Bündchen. 

The jewel of Copenhagen, Cecilie Bahnsen, is known for her confectionary designs. I can picture Olivia Palermo looking radiant in this S/S 21 number. 

Kate Bosworth came to my mind immediately after seeing this frothy pink Giambattista Valli F/W 20 dress. 

Emilia Wickstead took the statement-collar trend to the next level for S/S 21 and it's giving me Katie Holmes vibes.

The fall beckons in one of the best holidays: Halloween. Other than the candy, which admittedly is one of my favorite things about this holiday, being able to dress up is something that brings me a great deal of joy. And while there’s no telling what or how this year’s festivities will look, that doesn’t mean we can’t get into the spirit to celebrate this year. If you’re still wondering, "What Halloween costume trends will come from this time?” I’m placing big bets that the biggest Halloween costume trend will come from one of the hobbies that have filled many people’s quarantine: binge-watching TV shows. 

Yes, I'm talking about costumes inspired by television’s most popular shows of the moment. Because let’s be real—we’ve been spending a copious amount of time with stylish television characters, have fallen in love with the costume designers behind breakout shows like Normal People, and have comfort in rewatching ’90s television shows, so why wouldn’t our Halloween costumes be inspired by them this year? Not only are these ideas versatile enough to be worn for binge-watching at home or socially distanced gatherings, but they can also include pieces we already own so that we’re not spending extra money on a pair of wings we wear once.

If your Halloween costume tradition has always been to make a nod to a historical figure, then this costume idea is right up your alley (and more relevant than ever might I add). While at first glance, I was dubious about FX’s premiere of Mrs. America on Hulu, I found myself transfixed after the first episode. Not only is the show intriguing from a historical perspective, but the ’70s-inspired ensembles and the nod to feminist icons like Gloria Steinem, is ripe for inspiration of all kinds. Just be sure to finish off your costume by adding voting-inspired accessories that you can wear beyond Halloween and into the voting booth come November 3.

I can’t recollect the exact moment I realized my hair texture was not represented in media, but if you identify as black, or bi-racial, you too have probably become acutely aware of this at some point. Unfortunately, for many communities of color, representation in media has always been myopic. Of course, it would be naive to not acknowledge that there have been strides when it comes to visible inclusion—we’ve seen the natural hair movement take off, and even the animated short film Hair Love won at the 92nd Academy Awards—but even with these commendable steps forward, we still must reckon with the fact that the television and films acclaimed by these institutions continuously fail to acknowledge the humanity of all stories, much less give them frequent accolades.

And while it should be noted that Parasite made history as the first foreign-language film to win the best picture of the year, let that not distract from the fact that only one actor of color was nominated across all categories or the fact that in the whole history of the Oscars, not one African American has been nominated for an Oscar in hair and makeup. When it comes to true inclusion in film and television we still have a lot of work to do—having Janelle Monáe perform isn’t enough. You need true recognition of artists of color in the form of nominations and award winners.

But I promise, my friends, not all is lost—there are three hairstylists who are moving the needle in Hollywood one hairdo at a time and creating the type of change we need to see in the industry. Ahead you’ll hear from Araxi Lindsey, Stacey Morris, and Carla Farmer on their experiences working on some of the most iconic films and television shows, along with why hair representation is so important, and what products they swear by. Araxi Lindsey

Araxi Lindsey is a motion picture hairstylist who has been the department head for the television show Black-ish since the pilot. She’s also the personal hairstylist to a few celebrity clients including Tracee Ellis Ross. 

You were recently nominated for the Best Contemporary Hair Styling by the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. How does it feel to have your work on Black-ish be recognized? 

It feels great, but for so many years, I’ve always been comfortable being behind the curtain—so I didn’t like a lot of attention, or a lot of people talking to me, or people saying great things when I was younger. But now I’m at a point, and I guess also because I’m a mother, where I recognize it’s good to celebrate the good things, and it could be a testimonial for someone else, or inspiring to the youth, and I’m starting to understand that. It feels good to be a person who is admired or someone who is valued for what they love to do.

What’s the one hairstyle you’ve loved creating most on Tracee Ellis Ross? 

What I loved, and it was such a monumental moment was when Tracee won her Golden Globe in 2017, is when she had the long ponytail extension. I’ve seen people with the ponytail, but not as full and flowing as hers. I didn’t use a curling iron for that hair, I just washed and conditioned it, diffused it, and then incorporated her natural hair with the extensions. Tracee has never worn that type of hairstyle, so taking that journey with her, and introducing her to new things is exciting.

Have patience and confidence when going natural because it’s going to take time to get to the vision you have for yourself. Do not compare your natural-hair journey as you may not get the same results as someone else.
