As a professional doomscroller, it didn’t take long for the rumours of a certain cult brand’s high-street return to bubble up on my Instagram feed a few weeks ago. In a post that now boasts over 4 million views, Topshop teased a comeback that pulled directly on the nostalgia-ruled heartstrings of Millennials and Zillennials who grew up with the brand, promising Topshop will soon ‘return’ to the brand we once knew.

Maybe it’s the well-coveted Brit pop revival, or our Y2K-leaning shopping habits, but something in the waters (and the overwhelmingly enthusiastic comments section) tells me Topshop loyalists are ready to commit to whatever the brand has in store next. But just like the eager users in the comments section, I want to know what 'next' looks like. And, can it live up to the Topshop of old? The brand that managed to create a culture with their clothes and effortlessly encapsulate the youth of their customers.

Topshop, like a lot of '90s babies, had my heart as a teenager. It became the backdrop for whatever I defined as 'style' back then. I spent hours in their changing rooms and would save up money to purchase items from their premium Unique range—a term I still search on Vinted now. That era represented a brand you could rely on, effortlessly striking the balance between trends and personal style.

These are the reasons Topshop love runs deep, despite its murky downfall (which, if you’re interested, I’d recommend watching Trouble at Topshop on iPlayer). Whether you find yourself reminiscing on days spent in their iconic Oxford Street store, their sought-after celebrity and designer collabs (Kate Moss, Christopher Kane and JW Anderson, to name just a few) or simply can’t shake off the impact your Joni jeans had on you growing up, being a 'Topshop girl' in a previous life feels like the glue sticking together a keen audience of shoppers in 2025. A fact the new team at Topshop are well aware of. Last year, Danish fashion group Heartland acquired 75% of Topshop and Topman, marking a new chapter for both brands and move away from ASOS, operating as a standalone site from August (while continuing to be available on the retailer site). This investment has brought with it a slew of employees, fresh creative direction and new collections, launching with the new range entitled Ranch Water.

With a London-based scavenger hunt kicking off their relaunch this summer, a "We Missed You Too" interactive art installation by London-based artist Russ Jones's taking over Soho and a solo website on the cards for autumn. The brand’s new Director of Marketing, Moses Rashid confirmed that the old will inspire the new, telling us at the launch of the latest collection, “Hearing from fans of Topshop will be key to moving into the new era.”

So, with the scene potentially set for a 'Topshop Summer' I took the first opportunity I got to try out the new product in person (something we’ve all missed since the brand moved online). I recently moved into a new place and while saying goodbye to my cozy one-bedroom bungalow was bittersweet, the expanded closet space was a welcome change, a celebration even! The brand-new empty walk-in was a blank canvas, my Marie Antoinette shoe-montage dreams finally feeling like a reality (yes, that iconic scene lives rent-free in my mind).

I don't know about you, but I'm not sure that Britain is going to get the summer we'd hoped for. Call me pessimistic but it's becoming a bit of a rollercoaster trying to keep up with the forecast. Most of the time my morning routine consist of staring at my wardrobe whilst glancing down at the weather app on my phone, trying to work out what will work from now until the evening without getting caught in the rain or chill. At this point, Zendaya's learned a thing or two about packing for chic destinations. According to her Instagram, the Euphoria actress visited Paris, Mumbai, and Venice during the first half of 2023. And, of course, all three cities served as backdrops for impeccable outfits, thanks to Law Roach. While Zendaya's latest OOO ensemble doesn't include a Bulgari Serpenti necklace or custom vintage-inspired Prada piece, it still proves she's an expert in getting dressed far from home.

Earlier this week, Zendaya celebrated the opening of the Bulgari Hotel in Rome wearing a crystal-mesh tank top, no less. She was later spotted having dinner with friends while wearing a '90s-inspired tube top from the Australian brand Venroy. She paired the top with super low-rise belted trousers, loafers, and a Louis Vuitton tote bag from the brand's recent collaboration with artist Yayoi Kusama. Simple, universally chic, and travel-friendly, her look checked off every one of our vacation wardrobe requirements and then some.

Welcome to The Great Try-On. With spring well and truly in the air, we seized the opportunity to try on some of the best new-in pieces from some of your favourite brands, documenting the process along the way. We believe that the best way to shop online is to see an item IRL and to read candid reviews, so we hope that this leads you to your most successful purchases of the year.

It’s been exciting to see how Topshop has evolved since being bought out by ASOS in 2021. One of the biggest changes has been the expansion of sizing. It has been six months since Topshop finally became available in plus sizes, and it’s clear that the brand is trying to fill a gap in the market. Its pieces feel more grown-up, cleaner and more premium than much of what is currently on offer over size 18, and it feels as though this new iteration of Topshop is going to be the place I go for good wardrobe basics and statement pieces.

As soon as the extended size range launched last September, I bought its bold orange faux-leather trench coat. I was won over by the super-soft and extremely realistic faux leather, and it’s been my main winter coat ever since. After this impressive start, I’ve been looking forward to seeing what styles it would have in store for us this spring. Excitingly, Who What Wear have called upon me to try out a wide selection of new Topshop pieces as part of this season’s Great Try-On. Read on for my Topshop test-drive as a size 24.

1. STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS + BIKER JACKET

My Review: Since Topshop always was the place for high-street denim, I thought it was a must that I tried out a pair of the brand’s Curve jeans. The Kort is a straight-fit, super-high-rise, 100% cotton jeans style without any stretch. At first, they felt tight to fasten, but I know they will give over time as they are worn in. I might be tempted to try on a size up still to see if they fit around my stomach area better, as I imagine these wouldn’t be very comfortable to sit in. I do, however, love how high these come up on my waist, and I love the fit of the legs. 

It feels like Topshop is currently trying to elevate the basics, and here’s another piece that many would consider an essential in any wardrobe: the biker jacket. The faux leather feels soft and incredibly realistic, while the hardware feels suitably chunky and sturdy. There are four functioning pockets, including this little popper one on the front which I found to be the perfect spot for your bank card if you’re running out without a bag. I really would recommend this jacket, as it’s a great piece you could just chuck on and go.

2. FLORAL MAXI DRESS

My Review: When I picked out this maxi dress to try, I had wedding guests in mind. I thought the blurry floral could be an edgier update to the classic floral prints we often see in spring styles. When I took this piece out of the packaging, the first thing that struck me was the lovely quality of the fabric. This dress is 100% viscose, which gives the garment a gorgeous drape and nice weighty quality. The dress feels lovely to wear, and I love the design. However, there are aspects of the fit that I feel need tweaking. I would prefer the neckline to be slightly higher, and I felt the seam under the bust could have been a little lower to accommodate my fuller bust. I love the slit in the skirt, which I feel was cut to just the right height to feel sexy without the worry that you might show more than you want to.

3. TRENCH COAT + BLACK SATIN MAXI DRESS

My Review: Although I rarely wear black, I can feel it creeping back into my wardrobe this year. Alongside a few of my colour-loving friends, I am leaning back into the dark side. I really think this might be the first black dress to reenter my wardrobe in years! As soon as I saw this dress, it stood out to me as an exciting piece to see in plus-size. I like its nod to sportswear and its clean aesthetic. I think someone with minimalist style would adore this, but it would work equally well for someone who likes to layer more. I would pair this with a colourful or printed high-neck top underneath and leave the zip undone. 

The trench is another great version of a classic. It’s not usually something I would wear, but again, it is something I’m thinking I need in my wardrobe after trying it on! I love the fit of this coat, which leaves plenty of room to wear a jumper underneath. The longline length gives it a more premium look, and I love that it feels full of fabric. The brand hasn't scrimped on the size of the collar or the volume in the back storm flap either.

4. PINK SHIRT + FLARED BLUE TROUSERS

My Review: A crisp cotton shirt will always be welcome in my wardrobe, and as I’m a lover of pink, this felt like a perfect combo. The extra-large cuffs and double-breast pockets add a twist to a classic oversized shirt, and this is a good style to try if you struggle with shirts being tight around your hips/stomach area. The open back would give you the ease to move around and sit down comfortably without needing to undo the bottom few buttons like I often need to. This shirt is also available in a white cotton.

Next, flares! I absolutely love flared trousers, but it can be difficult to find a flare that is exaggerated enough to suit my plus-size frame. The extreme flare of these trousers absolutely ticks that box. I love the quality of the fabric, and the colour truly is incredible in person. They fasten at the side, which can be a little awkward to use, but it does give the front a smooth clean look. At 5’11”, I love the length of these on me, but this would likely mean that you would need to take these up if you’re shorter than 5’8”. This shape is also available in black, which I think would be a brilliant basic to have in your wardrobe if you prefer neutrals.

5. BIAS-CUT MAXI SKIRT + LACE LONG-SLEEVED TOP

My Review: There has been a resurgence of maxi skirts in all formats, and the bias cut is one of the key styles of the moment. Topshop Curve has this particular skirt available in six plain colours and one print. It’s such an easy style to wear due to the elasticated waist and the natural stretch that bias-cut fabric gives to a garment. I would pair this with an oversized jumper and T-shirt for a grungier daytime feel or a lace top like the above if I wanted to take it to an evening look. This fabric is thicker than many bias skirts I have tried in the past, which means it hangs really well and has a more luxe feel. Topshop design team, if you’re reading this, I would love to see this shape in a classic leopard print next! 

This is a perfect top for layering. I love the neckline and the ruched details that add more interest to this sheer long-sleeved top. I would wear this on its own, over a cami top, underneath a slip dress or with a blazer—it really is such a good building block for an outfit.

6. STRIPED MINIDRESS

My Review: I love knitted dresses! They are comfortable, easy and perfect if you tend to float between sizes. I’m always drawn to a high neck, and I think that paired with the long, flared sleeves creates a silhouette that is just fabulous. I think this would look great layered over a pair of flared trousers or worn underneath a waistcoat. This dress has loads of stretch and feels lovely to wear, but I am slightly put off by the diagonal seam through the waist. I also really wish we (plus-size people) had been given the option of the lime-green striped midi knit dress, too, like in the Topshop core range. You know me—I like a bit of colour.

7. CHUNKY LOAFERS

My Review: I’m always on the hunt for wide-fit shoes, and I’m impressed with the Topshop offering. These chunky loafers feel nice and sturdy, and I love the patent croc texture. After a day of walking around London in them, I was surprised by how easy they were to wear for the first time—no plasters needed, hurrah! I get the feeling that I’ll wear these daily, as they basically go with everything in my wardrobe.

As odd as it might feel to think about swimwear in February, their season in the sun will be here in no time. And since there's nothing worse than finding out when it's already too late to order your first bikini of the summer that a beautiful day is coming, I always find it beneficial to get ahead of the problem by stocking up on suits when they first drop rather than waiting until the last minute. 

With that in mind, I sprung to action upon discovering a heap of new swimwear on H&M, Mango, and Topshop this week. From runway-inspired floret-embellished maillots at Mango to stringy bikinis in bright colors and neutral shades at H&M, there are already plenty of swimsuit styles to choose from at a price that makes securing a variety of options for the impending warm weather entirely feasible.

Les Francaises have a knack for making everything look as easy as un, deux, trois. From their no-makeup makeup to the breathy way they draw out their ouis, French women seem to have being effortless cornered. This is particularly true in winter, when looking cute can feel like a Herculean task. Even at subzero temperatures, French women move about unbothered, which felt novel to this Californian; the last thing I feel like doing when it's cold and grey out is putting together a look. 

But the French have it down to a science! This is partly due to how they shop. French women typically invest in a few good pieces per season, favouring timeless pieces over trends. A well-cut coat. Sticking to long-lasting durable fabrics that drape well. After my first winter in Paris, I picked up a few tips to make cold-weather dressing more fun—as well as a shearling coat and pair of camel riding boots that I still own today (after all, practice makes perfect.)

I was (fashionably) late to the jeans party. My first foray into pants was experimenting with my mom’s old stirrup leggings, but beyond that, dresses and skirts were strictly my jam. Anything with separate legs felt restrictive and as far as hemlines were concerned, the shorter the better. 

That all changed when I discovered vintage in high school. Turned on to the "joy of the hunt” by a friend, I became obsessed with the adrenaline rush of discovering one-of-a-kind pieces. My previous grievances against pants were quickly forgotten when I fell for a pair of perfectly worn-in Levi’s. This was holy grail denim: buttery soft, slightly androgynous, and in the most perfect sky blue wash. I was hooked, and my repertoire expanded quickly: frayed cutoffs in lieu of miniskirts, indigo bootcut jeans over slip dresses. My sweaters were set aside in favor of oversized, distressed denim jackets. I’d turned into a true blue-jean baby. 

Denim still factors heavily in my closet. I’m in jeans almost every day. Recently, I crossed over to the dark side. Black jeans create a totally different look, and I was keen to switch things up. Revamping my denim drawer made me feel like I was in high school again, chasing a high through different cuts and washes. Like a certain once-beloved apricot exfoliator, skinny jeans seem to have developed a bad reputation. If you balked at clicking on this article, I get it. Skinny jeans seem downright passé compared to the other myriad of denim options on the market. But hear me out: Sleeping on this style may mean missing out on a highly versatile category of bottoms.

I fall into a specific club of women who happen to be on the shorter side. I actually stopped getting taller in the 8th grade, so once I was 5’2,” it was time to take me out of the oven. I was done! To my dismay of course. I have always wanted to be long and tall and beautiful, like models on a runway, floating around instead of walking.

Ask anyone who has turned 30 in the past few years which brand had the most influence on their adolescent style, and they'll likely say Topshop. From my formative years spent stealing my mother's Topshop staples for Friday nights in my best friend's front room to landing my first-ever job with the brand the second I turned 16, Topshop was at the centre of my teenage universe. I'd try on the store's most recent deliveries during my lunch break, get a thrill out of introducing a customer to our best-selling jeans (long live the Jamie!) and eat up its going-out dresses like candy, particularly when I reached university age.

Although I have the memory of a goldfish, there's a part of my brain in which my Topshop purchases live rent-free. I remember buying a black jacket covered entirely by fringing from Kate Moss's first Topshop capsule and a red lace dress that I wore for my first date with my now-husband. In fact, my wedding shoes came from Topshop, too.

I started out my career in fashion when Topshop was still king. I worked for a high-street magazine, and Topshop was the brand that bridged all tastes, styles and aesthetics. The best pieces in every shoot would inevitably come from Topshop, and calling in samples for said shoots was a challenge to say the least, as every publication from Vogue to Dazed tried to get their hands on them for their latest editorials.

This, the nostalgia and the deep roots of the brand made it seem almost unreal when it was announced it was going into administration. Of course, this was a move every fashion editor had seen coming for a while, but the follow-through of seeing a Great British fashion institution close its doors was a sad day for the high street. But a ray of hope: Topshop had been acquired by ASOS, another shopping stalwart. Perhaps the magic of Topshop would be reimagined into a new digital concept. It's been a moment, but that time is now.

Topshop has officially relaunched, and after a few edits that didn't quite live up to its former glory, that Topshop magic has been recaptured and just in time for it to make a positive impact on our autumn wardrobes. It's clear to me that the design team has taken the task of rejuvenating the behemoth very seriously, resulting in an edit that will appease 30-somethings like me but also tempt Gen Z.

Amongst the trend-led pieces Topshop always did so well, there's a solid selection of more timeless items, too, with a honed focus on tailoring, accessories and outerwear. The shoe department looks strong, too, but will it be able to capture the mecca that was its Oxford Street shoe lounge? Time will tell. For now, though, it's a promising start. Given how much contact my shoes make with the streets of New York, I have a rule that I very rarely (perhaps only in the name of Prada) break: I never spend more than $150 on footwear. The only problem is that my tastes, especially when it comes to shoes, don't exactly align with my self-appointed budget. At least, they don't when I shop from anywhere other than Nordstrom.

By now, you may know my standpoint when it comes to dresses. It's something of a love affair. I've been combing the web in search of the best affordable dresses, and to my delight, I've been inundated with beautiful, timeless styles that truly defy their price tags. 

Some of my most-worn dresses are former high-street finds I've worn and cherished for many years. They still have a place in my current wardrobe, and every year, I look forward to being reunited with them come the spring-summer wardrobe switch-over.

When it comes to shopping on the high street, or anywhere for that matter, I adhere to certain criteria to ensure a mindful purchase. This includes the composition, finishing, wearability and (most importantly) durability. The British high street is excelling at the moment. I'm impressed with the increased use of natural fibres and considered, timeless designs, which are one step closer to sustainability.

Re-wearability is particularly apt for summer fashion as we're often introduced to reiterations of former styles that sit comfortably within summer capsules. Both high-street and independent brands have released summer dresses that look well beyond their price points. It's in the finishes, expansive materials, quality yarns and shaping. I tend to gravitate towards drapey dresses in midi and maxi lengths that you can waft in the sunshine and wear for most occasions.
