First up, foundation. Part of Tom Ford's Architecture collection (designed to enhance your natural features), I'm a big fan of this radiance-boosting formula. Chic bottle aside, this glowing foundation ticks all the boxes. While most illuminating base products don't give much coverage, this hydrating formula is enhanced with light-diffusing powders, offering medium-to-full coverage and a naturally luminous finish. It's the sort of foundation that will take you from desk to drinks, and I reach for it whenever I want to feel like my very best self. Oh, and did I mention it blends like a dream? As I said, it truly ticks all the boxes.

2. Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Concealer

I'm very fussy when it comes to concealers, but this one passes with flying colours. Similar to the foundation, it boasts this creamy, hydrating formula that glides onto the skin like butter. The brand says it offers medium coverage, but it's definitely buildable in my opinion. I think of it as a two-in-one formula as it covers imperfections while also boosting radiance, making it a great option for the under-eyes. My top tip would be to use a small amount at first and see how you get on, as I find if I apply too much it can crease a little throughout the day.

3. Tom Ford Architecture Soft Matte Blurring Powder

While I love a radiant finish as much as the next person, I get a very oily T-zone, so setting powder is a must. I have to be honest, I was never really one for luxury setting powders, as in my opinion, they all do the same thing, but then I was sent the Tom Ford Architecture Soft Matte Blurring Powder, and everything changed. First, let's talk about the packaging. I don't think I've ever wanted to top up my makeup more than when I popped this in my handbag. It's so beautiful that it makes the mundane task of powdering my face feel like a heavenly experience. However, the formula is equally impressive. I find some powders can be too heavy on the skin, but this velvety texture is almost undetectable, adding a soft matte finish alongside a subtly blurring effect. Plus, the hyaluronic acid-infused formula means it never feels dry.

4. Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Contour Duo

I know people say you can't use powder and cream products together, but as someone who has had masterclasses with some of the best makeup artists in the world, I'm here to tell you that you absolutely can. So, although I used a powder blush for this makeup look (more on that later), I started with this luxurious cream contour duo. I much prefer cream bronzers as I find they look more natural on the skin, and this Tom Ford formula is no exception. Funnily enough, when I first got my hands on this palette, I thought both the contour shades looked really subtle, so I loaded up my brush and was shocked when I realised that it's actually incredibly pigmented. When testing it for the second time, I started with a small amount and loved how seamless it looked. It's perfect for a naturally sculpted effect. The highlighter contains a very small amount of shimmer, again creating a naturally luminous effect. However, I needed to use more of this product to see results.

5. Tom Ford Architecture Soft Matte Blush

Alongside the lipstick below, this blusher was the star of the show. I usually shy away from bright colours, but I think this hot pink shade will be my go-to for spring and summer. My top tip is to start with a small amount on your brush and build up as you go. The cream powder formula is infused with microsphere technology to create a flushed finish, and while I tend to use cream blushers, this powder has won me over as it never looks dry or heavy on the skin. The only thing stopping me from giving this product ten out of ten is that I found it a little hard to blend, but the upside is that it stays in place all day long.

6. Tom Ford Eye Colour Quad

I'd never tried a Tom Ford eyeshadow quad before writing this article, but I can 100% say that it was worth the wait. I opted for the shade "Insolent Rose", a beautiful blend of dusky pink and mauve tones. The palette features two matte shades, a demi-matte shadow and a shimmery option, alongside a large mirror and two mini Tom Ford brushes. I applied the lightest shade all over my lid before mixing the two darker shades in the crease, and all I can say is wow. Creamy, pigmented, blendable, long-lasting...I can see why people swear by Tom Ford eyeshadows. I literally have no notes. This eyeshadow palette has rendered me speechless.

7. Tom Ford Eyebrow Laminator

Have you ever seen such a stylish eyebrow gel? I certainly haven't. Anyone who knows me will know that I don't do a lot to my brows, but I do like to set them in place with a clear gel in the mornings. This is a great option as the small brush grabs onto every hair, lifting and sculpting for a naturally laminated finish. The gel actually comes out white, but dries down clear on the brows. That said, after a few hours of wear, I noticed a bit of white residue on my brows, but I quickly learned this was because I'd applied too much product in the first place. Like most Tom Ford makeup formulas, a little goes a long way.

8. Tom Ford Emotionproof Mascara

I feel like I'm always on the hunt for a groundbreaking mascara that doesn't transfer onto my eyelids halfway through the day, and I think I might have just found it. Yep, the clue is in the name. This long-wearing, waterproof formula is quite literally "emotionproof" and lasts all day. It creates a fluttery effect that can be layered for a more dramatic finish, and the long, tapered wand makes it easy to coat every lash. Tom Ford, you've done it again.

No makeup look is complete without a bit of lipstick, and while there are so many good Tom Ford options to talk about, I thought I'd try something new for this article. Possibly the most summery, hot pink hue out there, I was a little scared when I opened this up, as I don't usually stray from my nude lip balms and glosses. I recently visited Tom Ford Beauty's first standalone boutique in SoHo and, being the beauty journalist I am, fired off a laundry list of scent-styling questions as I sampled each glorious Private Blend potion. What are the ultimate crowd-pleaser combinations? What are the most underrated pairings? What should someone mix and match if their tastes lean gourmand, woody, floral, fruity, et al.? No stone was left unturned, and I walked away with more than a few recommendations—one of which I fully can't stop spraying.

About Oud Voyager

The latest addition to Tom Ford's Private Blend collection, Oud Voyager calls upon, of course, oud—an earthy, smoky, animalic note that has been treasured for centuries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. It's an ancient ingredient associated with wealth and opulence (so much so that it's been dubbed "liquid gold"), but Dominique Ropion—master perfumer for the Tom Ford blend—wanted to elevate the oud even further by combining it with fresh, modern elements. "Oud is woody, but also very animalic, spicy, very deep, [and] a little bit dark, so we had to find something that contrasts very strongly with that part of the ingredient," he says during a brand master class. "Floral notes are the best way to do this."

Namely, red peony, which Ropion describes as "a very rich flower—very complex, but not heavy," and geranium, which has an herbaceous—almost minty—freshness. "It has this rosiness, but at the same time there's something very saturated and juicy," Helen Murphy, Tom Ford VP of fragrance development, shares about the note. You'll also find a floral oud tri-distillate—an exclusive blend of all three aforementioned notes to amplify their impact—pink pepper, saffron, osmanthus, cypriol, patchouli, and musk. "The cypriol and patchouli magnify and accentuate the oud notes, which makes it even richer," notes Murphy. That osmanthus, on the other hand, adds a leathery tone with an addictive, nectar-like quality.

The result is an oud-forward fragrance that's certainly sensual but not quite as musky as other traditional oud blends. "Some ouds can be very, very animalic," Ropion says. "This one is woody, a touch [animal-like], ambery… quite complex." Because of this specific type of oud—plus the floral facets—I'd say it's a great "starter oud" for those who may have shied away from oud fragrances in the past. It's deep and rich yet not overwhelmingly so, and when paired with Vanilla Sex (more in just a moment!), its seductive quality quadruples.

About Vanilla Sex

What is there to say about Vanilla Sex that hasn't already been said? If you're a fan of gourmand scents, chances are you already have the delectable blend in your rotation. Personally, it's one of the most-complimented fragrances I own; recently, I sprayed it at my desk and was immediately bombarded with questions from my coworkers. ("Oh my god, what perfume did you just use?")

Its two types of vanilla combined with sandalwood, jasmine, orris, and animalis provide a warm, creamy dry-down that's mouthwatering without reading too cupcake-like. You can tell it's sweet without feeling like you're drowning in cake batter, which is a difficult balance to strike in dessert-inspired blends. Like Oud Voyager, it leans on a hero note (this one being vanilla) without sacrificing an ounce of complexity. It's nostalgic with a modern edge that makes it smell oh so lavish. WWW beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock agrees, calling it one of her all-time—if not the all-time–favorite Tom Ford fragrance. "It's warm, alluring, glamorous, and sensual. It's modern with a touch of sexy, Old Hollywood siren," she says in a review.

The Combination I Can't Stop Spraying

Each blend totally stands on its own, but when you wear Oud Voyager and Vanilla Sex together, expect compliment pandemonium—don't say I didn't warn you! After wearing the combo for 35 days, I've received more "You smell amazing!" comments than I can count. One of my coworkers even told me I smelled like I belong in a chic French apartment, so yeah, I won't ever be giving up this rich, sophisticated pair.

According to Murphy, Vanilla Sex brings an "addictive richness" to Oud Voyager, making it even more seductive and dreamy than it already is on its own. "The almondy vanilla quality that you have in Vanilla Sex together with the rich woods bring something even more narcotic, addictive, sensual, and opulent," she explains. "It just makes [Oud Voyager] even more enveloping." I happen to agree, as I literally can't get enough of the sweet, leathery combo. While it absolutely shines after dark (a true party perfume, if you're in the market for one), I've been spritzing on the pair in the morning too as my everyday scent. I tend to swap my day-to-day fragrance for something darker and richer as the weather dips below 60ºF, and this combination is perfect for the mysterious, witchy energy I've been craving this fall.

Murphy recommends applying Vanilla Sex first, since it is technically the heavier fragrance. Not that Oud Voyager is very light in a traditional sense, but it does have a fresh dimension thanks to the florals. I've tried both versions (Oud Voyager on top of Vanilla Sex and vice versa), and I have to say that Murphy is right on the money. The vanilla fragrance provides a perfectly creamy base for the oud-floral blend, and the result lasts well over 12 hours. (Seriously. It's late afternoon as I type this, and my wrist smells freshly spritzed.) I haven't worn another fragrance combo since—but when I do, you better believe I'll be taking my next recommendation from the Tom Ford bible.

Oud Voyager and Oud Wood

Despite their similarities in name, these oud-forward fragrances are actually quite different. They each tap into the unique facets of oud—Oud Wood reading smokier, and Oud Voyager having those fresh florals. Says Murphy, blending the two is a no-brainer, especially if you're a major fan of oud scents.

Oud Voyager and Black Lacquer

"The other one I could see [Oud Voyager] pairing with is Black Lacquer because Black Lacquer has those incense-y, ink accords," Murphy shares.

Oud Voyager and Rose Prick

To amp up those floral notes, pair Oud Voyager with Rose Prick, a warm floral with spicy, earthy notes of pepper and patchouli.

White Suede and Electric Cherry

White Suede smells like old money—no other way to slice it. When paired with Electric Cherry, a playful, sparkling concoction, it creates the most beautiful juxtaposition. If you're a fan of twisty-turny scents, you'll fall hard for this pair.

A Slithering Seduction

Everyone at the show mentioned how the models didn't just walk the runway. They slinked down it in a way that felt less like that of a fashion show saunter and more akin to a main character waltz from a movie scene. Most of the models didn't even walk on their own but alongside others, in groups of two or three, with a coordinate sex appeal. They looked like a group of well dressed friends you spot in a corner at a club and instantly want to know everything about. The soundtrack was equally as cinematic, with songs like an acapella version of David Bowie's “Heroes."

A Very Haiderman Spin on Ford’s Classics

Ackermann has struck a beautiful balance between giving everyone the Tom Ford that they know and love while also adding his own delightful twist. Clothing clung to the body in a way that, at times, almost defied gravity. With wire construction, a black strapless gown seemed suspended from invisible string with two points that swayed with each step forward. There was also strappy bras worn with sleek tailored blazers layered on top, jokstraps peeking out from short shorts, and of course, plenty of bare skin.

It served as a reminder that some colors can withstand a cultural moment, especially when they're one that can easily add such a fun pop to any wardrobe.

It’s been a big week for Taylor Swift fans. She A) appeared on the Kelce brothers’ podcast, New Heights, B) announced her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, and C) released the track list, including the titular song, which features Sabrina Carpenter. It’s more content than she’s given us in months, or at least since her Eras tour wrapped back in December, and Instagram is popping off accordingly.

While I’m certainly looking forward to new music (her album drops on October 3, so mark your calendars), I’m still thinking about another T. Swift detail I learned this week—that is, the exact perfume she wears. And, no, neither one is a Taylor Swift original (throwback to two of her mid-2000s scents: Wonderstruck and Wonderstruck Enchanted). According to Allure, Swift wears two designer scents. One is a light, sweet, floral fragrance, and the other is a sultry, woody scent.

If you're ever unsure if something is still "in" or not, I suggest taking a look at what Hailey Bieber has recently worn. She has a way of influencing the trend cycle, whether that has to do with overnight face masks or designer handbags. You might think a micro-trend is on its way out, but if Bieber's still wearing it, I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Case in point: her most recent outfit, which centered on a pair of white pedal pushers that she styled with a black camisole, vintage Tom Ford for Gucci sandals, a New York Yankees baseball cap, and her new favorite The Row bag, the small Park Tote.

I'm not afraid to admit that I was one of the people who assumed that the pedal-pusher craze would slow down and eventually die out once fall arrived, nor am I too prideful to say that I was incorrect in that assumption. With Bieber's continued support, I now see pedal pushers continuing their reign well into autumn. In fact, if you style them with tights and closed-toe pumps, they can even work for winter. (Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself now.)

Take a cue from the Rhode founder by playing around with alternative colors if you already own and wear the trend in black. Moving into fall, swap out her camisole for a fitted blazer or waist-defining cardigan, and ditch the open-toe mules for some pointed-toe kitten heels. Of course, those are just a few ways you can wear pedal pushers this fall. The possibilities with this pant style are truly endless.

Few things in life get me as excited as one of the best summer perfumes. I'm not sure what it is about summer scents, but they can completely transform my mood. Perhaps it's the escapist element. Many of these fragrances contain tropical or solar notes that transport me to warmer days.

From Estée Lauder's Bronze Goddess to Sol de Janeiro's Cheirosa 62, there are many iconic summer perfumes out there. However, in my opinion, it doesn't get much more iconic than Tom Ford's Soleil Blanc scent.

This luxury fragrance is loved by editors, and for good reason. It is quite possible one of the chicest summer scents out there, and it never fails to bring out my yacht party, island-hopping alter ego who likes to spend her weekends in the South of France. The brand recently added a new iteration of the iconic scent to the Soleil Blanc lineup, so I thought that it was about time that I reviewed both fragrances to let you in on what all the fuss is about...

The Scent

As mentioned above, this is a seriously chic scent. Notes of coconut, tonka bean and pistachio give it this sweet, gourmand edge; however, the addition of white florals adds an elegant touch. Hints of bergamot and pink pepper take the fragrance to a whole new level, creating this mood-boosting aroma that I want to bathe in every single summer.

If notes aren't your thing, then let me try and paint a picture of this perfume for you. Imagine a luxurious island, with golden sand beaches and palm trees galore. You've just arrived on your private yacht, and the only sound you can hear is your Oran sandals hitting the deck. You're shown to your villa, and enter through white linen curtains that are wafting open from the sea breeze. You jump in the shower to get ready for dinner, and drench yourself in golden body shimmer so that your skin sparkles in the sunlight. You're handed your first glass of champagne and you're watching the bubbles fizz, knowing you've got an entire week of relaxation ahead. Smells good, right?

The Longevitity

One thing I don't tend to love about summer scents is their lasting powers. These fragrances often contain lighter, delicate notes, which means that they don't last as well compared to punchy winter scents. However, I am always pleasantly surprised by this particular perfume. Thanks to the richer, warmer base of tonka bean and benzoin, Soleil Blanc lingers on the skin all day long.

The Bottle

In true Tom Ford style, the perfume is a fashion accessory in its own right. Housed in a chic white rectangular bottle, it features gold detailing on the front and on the lid. Not only do I love having this on display at home, but I also feel ultra elegant whenever I pull this out of my handbag.

The Verdict

As you can probably tell, I'm a big fan of this summer scent. To me, this perfume is timeless, and I know that I will be using it for years to come. There's no denying that it's expensive (a 50ml bottle will set you back £222), but thanks to the timeless appeal and long-lasting aroma, it's a worthwhile investment if you do feel like treating yourself to a luxury perfume this season. The only downside? You may feel like booking yourself a holiday after one spritz of this. Consider this your formal warning.

Tom Ford Eau de Soleil Blanc Review

If you're after something a little more understated, then let me introduce you to the newest lineup in the Soleil Blanc collection, Tom Ford Eau de Soleil Blanc. A decidedly fresher scent, this fragrance floods the senses with citrus notes upon the first spritz. A blend of tuberose, ylang ylang and orange blossom adds this sweet, floral, uplifting element that makes this feel somewhat green and crisp when compared to the original perfume.

That being said, this scent still oozes luxury appeal. From the ribbed gold bottle to the energizing, expensive-smelling aroma, I've earned plenty of compliments since testing this out. Tom Ford, you've done it again.

I love collecting perfumes. In fact, nothing brings me more joy than when I can place a fresh fragrance (that's housed in a chic, glass bottle, no doubt) front and center on my vanity. Soleil Neige was one of the first Tom Ford fragrances I ever owned, and it's still one of my favorite ones. It was designed to mimic the "shimmer of sun on snow," and as such, it has a cool freshness about it. Even though it's meant to evoke winter, I think it's seasonless, which is why I wear it year-round. The simple and chic combination of notes—bergamot, jasmine flower, and lemon—works just as well in July as they do in January.

I gasped when I saw this Tom Ford's Vanilla Sex Eau de Parfum on sale. This is also one of my all-time—if not the all-time—favorite Tom Ford fragrance. With two different types of vanilla grounded in a base of creamy sandalwood, it's warm, alluring, glamorous, and sensual. It's modern with a touch of sexy, Old Hollywood siren.

Customer review: "I get so many compliments on this parfum! I love to layer it with the Tom Ford, Vanilla Fatale. I highly recommend this scent—cannot say enough great things about it!"

Fragrance notes: Mahogany wood accord, roasted barley orpur, vanilla resinoid

With rich notes of mahogany and barley, Vanilla Fatale is the dark, dangerous, and intense version of Vanilla Sex, which is why I like to wear it for late-night drinks and dim-lit dinner dates. The brand describes it as a "richly cinematic and deeply seductive scent," and I agree. It's a femme fatale, bottled. If we're keeping with the Old Hollywood metaphor, then Vanilla Sex is Rita Hayworth, and Vanilla Fatale is Ava Gardner.

Customer review: "Performs well. Easy to mix with other scents. Settles vanilla with a warm, spicy kick and leather finish to set the tone. This is what I would expect a French person to smell like."

3 More On-Sale Nordstrom Beauty Products

The time has come for Haider Ackermann to showcase his vision for Tom Ford, the American fashion brand he took over last September. (Ackermann replaced former Creative Director Peter Hawkings, who only held the position for one year following Ford's departure.) Sure, there have been a few sneak peeks in the form of custom looks for Timothée Chalamet, but I speak for everyone in fashion when I say I need more.

On Wednesday at 19:00 Paris time (1:00 p.m. in New York), the former Berluti designer and current Canada Goose creative director held his first runway show since joining Tom Ford. The space was dark and dimly lit and had various paths for models like Vittoria Ceretti, Mona Tougaard, Alex Consani, Lulu Tenney, and Sara Caballero to travel down while donning a mix of beautifully tailored suits (Ackermann's specialty), gowns, and separates in vibrant pastels, neon shades, and futuristic neutrals like navy and gray. In a press release, he talks about this balance, which can be seen throughout the 55-piece collection. "Entering the house that Mr. Tom Ford built, I was drawn to the man himself, whose personality reverberates through everything he envisioned," Ackermann wrote. "He is nightlife. I am the morning after: This is where our dance begins."

In the end, the designer found a way to hold onto Ford's sexy, sultry image while simultaneously marking the beginning of a new era for the brand that's definitively his. Following the finale walk, fashion's elite rose to their feet, giving the Colombian creative a much-deserved standing ovation. Even Ford himself stood, smiling and looking on proudly. When the two designers—Tom Ford's past and present—embraced, the fashion world knew it was a success.

Only the Coolest Attendees

At the show was Tom Ford himself, hugging Ackermann when he stepped out from behind an industrial mirrored curtain and showing clear signs of approval for the designer's debut collection. Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, Doechii, Lou Doillon, Law Roach, Marisa Berenson, and Karen Elson were all inside witnessing the historic first collection by Ackermann unveiling itself.

Tailoring of the Future

If Ackermann's known for anything in the industry, it's his razor-sharp tailoring, an elite-level skill he's flexed in every fashion role he's held, including the newest (and most high-profile) one. In his debut collection for Tom Ford, the designer put his tailoring expertise to use in various forms—double-breasted suits sleek enough to hammer the final nail in relaxed, baggy suiting's coffin as well as less formal matching sets and outerwear. Let's get one thing clear: Tom Ford shoppers are guaranteed to look refined and tailored come fall 2025.

A 24-7 Wardrobe

From a classic Tom Ford robe to a wedding-worthy white gown, Ackermann's first collection for the American house included at least one look for every occasion life throws at you. There were suits for the office, elevated elastic-waistband joggers for last-minute errands, pastel gowns for galas, micro minidresses for a night out, and even leather sets fit for the back of a vintage Harley. Whatever's on the Tom Ford woman's or man's agenda, Ackermann's F/W 25 offering has their outfit checked off.

Double Trouble

Midway through the show, two of this decade's most prolific and recognizable supermodels—Tougaard and Ceretti—took to the runway as a pair, with Tougaard a step ahead in a low-cut tuxedo-style gown and Ceretti slightly behind in a strapless dress with a delicate white brooch and thigh-high slit.

With an almost perfect five-star rating on Sephora, you know Who What Wear senior beauty editor Jamie Schneider isn't the only one who can't get enough of this new scent from Tom Ford. If you like smoky, sweet scents that remind you of the desert, this one is definitely for you. The vanilla note really adds an extra dose of the unexpected to an otherwise woody-leaning scent.

Did anyone else spend all their money on Victoria's Secret body sprays back in the day? This reminds me of that era and is just a really good gourmand. I always hesitate when it comes to body mists because I thought a lot of them didn't last as long, but this one has some serious staying power and just smells so sweet and heavenly. Schneider, myself, and Who What Wear Beauty Director Erin Jahns all named this one as a shoo-in fall favorite.

From the makers of the legendary Baccarat Rouge 540 comes this new offering APOM. This one is more of a floral-amber combination with pretty opening notes like orange blossom and lavender. It would definitely be something warm and inviting to wear during the spring, but honestly, I'd also wear it year-round.

I haven't gotten my hands on this one just yet, but Schneider says this is the perfect cozy fall scent with notes of candied apple, toasted vanilla bean, and cedarwood.

It's hard to imagine another Parfums de Marly fragrance eclipsing my all-time favorite—Delina Exclusif Eau de Parfum ($240)—but this one comes pretty damn close. It's sweet and musky and reminds me of another one of my favorite fragrances, Viktor&Rolf's Good Fortune ($145). I've been loving it for chilly fall nights.

This fruity, floral fragrance has captured our hearts. Aura is the perfect name for a fragrance like this—it's sweet and juicy and is even a bit sparkly. It makes you feel so radiant and is the perfect "California beach day" scent in my humble opinion.

It's probably obvious at this point, but I tend to love fruity, floral, and gourmand scents. This new Lancôme offering is all of the above, and it was love at first spritz. Immediately, the note of raspberry hooked me, but I also love the undercurrents of leather, cocoa butter, and cedarwood. It adds such a rich and unique quality to the fragrance that elevates it far past your average gourmand. I wear it almost every time I leave my house these days.

Byredo fragrances just scream fall to me. I have a roster of scents from the brand that I often whip out for the season, including Gypsy Water, Mojave Ghost, and Bal D'Afrique, but Jahns also said that I need to add Desert Dawn to the lineup. The notes of sandalwood, rose petals, and papyrus are already speaking to me—I can't wait to give this one a sniff.

According to Jahns, this new perfume from Loewe is chic AF. With notes of truffle, pear, oudh, and violet, it's a scent worthy of your fall collection.

7 has heady notes of patchouli, incense, and red pepper berries. It's got a bit of spice to it as well as a sweeter note of rockrose wildflower.

Who What Wear associate beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock and I are fully obsessed with Caramel Skin from Phlur. It's just another damn good gourmand that's sweet but features earthy sandalwood to give it a bit more balance.

I know I say this a lot, but this perfume is actually a vacation bottled. If you love coconut perfumes, this one is easily a top pick. It has such a breezy opening, but the base note of salted amber gives it way more of an elevated feel.

"She's '90s and 2000s Calvin Klein archive, Dolce & Gabbana, and Ralph Lauren," 22-year-old Paris-based fashion student Asia Bieuville says in a TikTok. "She's the office siren." As her video goes on, a picture of this hypothetical woman and her immediately recognisable but formerly nameless aesthetic begins to form. "She wears bold lips and bold nails, chunky jewellery that makes a statement, but simple outfits," Bieuville continues, name-dropping Bayonetta glasses, thigh-high socks, and Elsa Peretti jewellery. "She's everything we aspire to be this year," she says. And she's not wrong. Looking at the green-screened collage behind her—which features Bella Hadid in a black pencil skirt set from Tom Ford's S/S 98 collection for Gucci; Gisele Bündchen walking the runway in a turtleneck sweater, croc-print skirt, and stiletto knee-highs at Ralph Lauren's A/W 00 show; and Chanel's beloved and forever-sold-out Oiseau de Nuit nail colour—it's clear that the office-siren look is exactly the one every brand and fashion girl is striving to achieve in 2024.

"I began to see the influences of this trend in the F/W 22 shows, where we were starting to move away from 'fuzziness' and back towards something more structured," she explains over email. After spotting video after video surrounding back-to-office shopping and dressing on her TikTok feed at the start of the season, similar to the way we were once inundated with back-to-school fashion content, the trend and its now-viral name sort of just clicked in her head. "I think it's the natural evolution of a generation that has gone from [one to the other]," she says, from school to work. According to Bieuville, the trend is all about challenging feminine energy in the office, a space that's so often male-dominated. "We've often been told that women have to adapt to masculine codes to be respected and admired in the corporate world, but I think there's another, more sensual and stylish way," she explains. "The woman who represents this has ambition, likes to assume her sensuality and femininity, and doesn't care about judgment. She proves herself through her actions. She's Samantha Jones in Sex and the City: feminine, sexy, and successful." 

Though the office siren's closet is made up of primarily vintage pieces and archival runway looks by the aforementioned designers and more, Bieuville says that today's creative directors who are adopting this trend right and left and thus adapting it for the modern woman are just as qualified to fill up her wardrobe. "Miu Miu's F/W 23 collection is what lit the office-siren flame in me," she says of the librarian-chic offering designed by Miuccia Prada that debuted in February. "More recently, Gucci's Ancora collection and Peter Hawkings' debut collection for Tom Ford fit perfectly with what I imagine this woman wearing." For her, there's a clear through line from these two recent collections to Tom Ford's original designs for Gucci from the '90s and 2000s, which act as a strong foundation for this trend. But let's be clear: This aesthetic is present in plenty more collections from the past few seasons, including Ferragamo's most recent offerings by Creative Director Maximilian Davis and Anthony Vaccarello's for Saint Laurent. 

As many dos as the office-siren look has—Bone Cuffs, slinky blouses, pencil skirts, stilettos, and cherry red—it likewise has its don'ts, Bieuville shares. One common misconception when it comes to the trend is that it's vulgar, especially for an office setting. "A big 'don't' for me would be to be inappropriately dressed," she says. "The corporate side is still very much present, but [the office siren] lifts it all up with a play on materials, and in the end it's quite a subtle balance." Putting an emphasis on the word subtle, she says that ending up in anything leopard print with patent-leather stilettos is a sign you've gone way too far. "The aim is not to be noticed only for your looks, but to shine with all your qualities." Really, it's more about the woman than her closet. Though, when someone has themself fully figured out, they usually also have a good grasp on their personal style. And the office siren is 100% the type to know exactly who she is and what she wants—from her job, from her style, from her life as a whole. "I began to see the influences of this trend in the F/W 22 shows, where we were starting to move away from 'fuzziness' and back towards something more structured," she explains over email. After spotting video after video surrounding back-to-office shopping and dressing on her TikTok feed at the start of the season, similar to the way we were once inundated with back-to-school fashion content, the trend and its now-viral name sort of just clicked in her head. "I think it's the natural evolution of a generation that has gone from [one to the other]," she says, from school to work. According to Bieuville, the trend is all about challenging feminine energy in the office, a space that's so often male-dominated. "We've often been told that women have to adapt to masculine codes to be respected and admired in the corporate world, but I think there's another, more sensual and stylish way," she explains. "The woman who represents this has ambition, likes to assume her sensuality and femininity, and doesn't care about judgment. She proves herself through her actions. She's Samantha Jones in Sex and the City: feminine, sexy, and successful." 

Though the office siren's closet is made up of primarily vintage pieces and archival runway looks by the aforementioned designers and more, Bieuville says that today's creative directors who are adopting this trend right and left and thus adapting it for the modern woman are just as qualified to fill up her wardrobe. "Miu Miu's F/W 23 collection is what lit the office-siren flame in me," she says of the librarian-chic offering designed by Miuccia Prada that debuted in February. "More recently, Gucci's Ancora collection and Peter Hawkings' debut collection for Tom Ford fit perfectly with what I imagine this woman wearing." For her, there's a clear through line from these two recent collections to Tom Ford's original designs for Gucci from the '90s and 2000s, which act as a strong foundation for this trend. But let's be clear: This aesthetic is present in plenty more collections from the past few seasons, including Ferragamo's most recent offerings by Creative Director Maximilian Davis and Anthony Vaccarello's for Saint Laurent. 

As many dos as the office-siren look has—Bone Cuffs, slinky blouses, pencil skirts, stilettos, and cherry red—it likewise has its don'ts, Bieuville shares. One common misconception when it comes to the trend is that it's vulgar, especially for an office setting. "A big 'don't' for me would be to be inappropriately dressed," she says. "The corporate side is still very much present, but [the office siren] lifts it all up with a play on materials, and in the end it's quite a subtle balance." Putting an emphasis on the word subtle, she says that ending up in anything leopard print with patent-leather stilettos is a sign you've gone way too far. "The aim is not to be noticed only for your looks, but to shine with all your qualities." Really, it's more about the woman than her closet. Though, when someone has themself fully figured out, they usually also have a good grasp on their personal style. And the office siren is 100% the type to know exactly who she is and what she wants—from her job, from her style, from her life as a whole. Whether you're ready for their return or not prepared to commit, oversize sunglasses are on their way to a monumental comeback, with the brands on every fashion person's lips right now (Saint Laurent, Chloé, Chanel, Gucci, etc.) putting aside their affinity for moderate eyewear in favor of styles of the larger variety. And now that their stance on the subject's been solidified on the spring 2025 runways, there's no turning back.

It's an interesting moment to see the upswing in oversize sunglasses silhouettes. In part, we're seeing a return to style from the '60s, when Jackie O put large frames on the map, so it isn't surprising to see their return along with other styles from the decade. Now that the style set has packed up its things and headed to Paris to close out fashion month, let's sit down and discuss everything we just saw at Milan Fashion Week for the spring/summer 2024 season. Buckle up—the Italian houses gave us so much to talk about. This is a fashion week that's historically much more predictable than its counterparts in NYC and Paris, but with a new class of creative directors at the helm of many established houses and an influx of new labels on the scene, Milan is proving to have a strong It factor up its sleeve.

This season introduced us to the new era of Gucci with the debut collection from Creative Director Sabato De Sarno, and while the opinions are split on old versus new Gucci, it marks a refreshing new chapter in Milanese fashion along with the exciting rebrands that Maximilian Davis and Matthieu Blazy are doing at Ferragamo and Bottega Veneta respectively. The first looks at 2024 are already exciting us, and below, you'll find the eight most important trends to know about now. 

In the Hot Seat

The temperatures were climbing in Milan this week, and we don't mean in your weather app. Hot pants were a trend that absolutely lit up the runways of top houses, including Prada, Tom Ford, Gucci, Max Mara, Bally, and many others. While designers brought forward several ideas on how to wear the teeny-tiny shorts, ranging from velvet suiting to patent leather and logo embossed, they remained united on one front: Inseams shouldn't exceed more than a single inch.

Power Color

Fiery red may be the dominating color of 2023, but we already have the intel on its 2024 successor. Deep shades of burgundy and oxblood popped up throughout Milan Fashion Week, especially in glossy patent-leather iterations that look utterly luxurious. Burgundy is a color that represents power and ambition, and we expect nothing less when wearing the hue next spring.

Opposites Attract

Fashion loves a good paradox: soft and hard, glitzy and ordinary, frivolous and practical. The Milan runways featured polar-opposite pairings that proved sometimes two things can be so wrong that they're right. Just take Prada's stylists, for instance, who paired fringe skirts with workwear jackets, or Gucci's, who married crystal-embellished bras with tailored skirts and zip-up sweatshirts with patent-leather skirts and pumps. The motto of the week? It's weird, but it works.

Tissue Wrapping

We've been talking about sheer clothing for several seasons now, but the looks this week marked a notable shift in the way we're all going to be wearing them. Instead of totally sheer looks, designers in Milan piled on layers of organza and tulle atop dresses, shirts, and blazers that tap into the fabric's delicate vibe while still being quite wearable. Prada's sheer dresses were, without a doubt, one of the week's highlights, with trails of sheer fabric floating angelically behind its models. It's safe to say they're already a contender for spring's It dresses.

Meet in the Middle

Skirts are rising steadily in popularity, and micro minis and long maxis are currently trending. According to the spring runways, though, hemlines are getting much more democratic, as mid-length pencil skirts were noticeably everywhere in Milan in sleek patent-leather and croc-embossed iterations.

Fringe Ideas

Some trends were all about overall silhouettes, colors, and hemlines this week while others came in the form of more subtle details. Fringe was one such detail that caught our attention—not just because it hasn't been at the top of our shopping lists in quite some time but also because of the decisive way designers used it. They doled out fringe conservatively through a belted overlay at Prada, a fringed tassel at Ferragamo, and a crystal fringe skirt hem at Gucci, and the effect was extremely chic and elevated.

Top-Drawer Dominance

The Milan shows want you to refocus your attention on the contents of your top drawer, namely your sock drawer. At Jil Sander, MSGM, and Moschino, tall knee-high socks featured prominently in looks with shorts and skirts to let the hosiery have its full moment. Socks and heels shouldn't make sense, but here, they just do.

Return of the Skinny Scarf

We're not out of the Y2K woods just yet. In fact, the decade's influence isn't waning—it's just shifting gears to items that are new to the 2020s. What Are Leather Fragrances?

We all know what leather is (especially when its used to describe clothes), but how its translated into a scent can be somewhat mysterious to those unfamiliar with the bold note. We asked two fragrance brand founders and perfumers to break it down for us, starting with what makes leather scents so recognizable. According to Steve Soderholm, the perfumer and founder behind Ranger Station, what makes a leather scent is a blend of musks, ambers, and spices. "Leather is an interesting category because you cannot get leather oil from leather," he says. "The fragrance of leather usually comes from the conditioning process of the leather."

Soderholm tells us that some of the first perfumers in Grasse, France were actually leather tanners exploring ways to make leather smell good, since the process of tanning the material doesn't. "When we think of how leather smells, it's made up of a lot of different molecules, and when perfuming leather, you can’t actually use leather oil because that doesn’t exist," continues Soderholm.

Today, leather is not only recognized for it's history in textiles, but it's ability to transform and dominate the most memorable perfumes. "A leather scent is the ultimate study in contrasts, where elegance meets edge," says founder and CEO of Harlem Perfume Co., Teri Johnson. "It’s smooth and sophisticated, yet always touched with a hint of fire. At its core, leather evokes the sensual tension between tradition and rebellion."

What Should I Look For?

While there are no rules for what a leather perfume should be, it's always a good idea to gravitate towards a well-balanced blend of notes with good sillage. Leather also happens to be an idea choice to wear in cold weather. "Leather fragrances are made for the fall and winter months," explains Johnson. "Their rich, resinous base notes create a cocooning effect, like the scent equivalent of your favorite leather jacket." She explains that in cooler weather, fragrance molecules evaporate at a slower rate, allowing bold, long-lasting notes to linger and evolve on the skin for, "a warm, enveloping aura that feels both grounding and powerful.

Leather also happens to be one of the most recognizable perfume notes associated with the calming, warm emotions that are often tied to the latter half of the year. "The fragrance of leather just makes everyone feel cozy. I am honestly not sure exactly why, because my leather jacket is definitely not my most cozy jacket… but just thinking about leather makes me feel warm," says Solderholm.

Are Leather Scents Ideal for Layering?

While leather has gained the unfortunate reputation as being a fragrance note that's challenging to layer with others, there are some ways to ensure a beautiful blend every time. Johnson tells us leather scents pair beautifully with blends of dark florals and certain elevated gourmands. "These notes balance leather’s smokiness with romance, richness, or even just a hint of sweetness," she says. For something more sensual and mysterious, she advises layering with jasmine sambac like in Harlem Perfume Co.'s Showgirl Eau de Parfum ($140).

"It brings a lush, velvety quality to leather. For a bolder edge, deep rose, oud, or incense notes can add drama and depth," she explains. Johnson also recommends layering with gourmand notes like the ones found in another Harlem Perfume Co. must-have. "The sweet-and-spice interplay in our Langston Eau de Parfum, for example, makes for an incredible counterpoint to leather, adding warmth and magnetism without losing intensity," Johnson continues. "The goal is to create contrast that feels intentional, sexy, and dimensional."

Sonderhold warns that leather makes a statement, so that you should make sure that whatever you decide to blend it with isn't fighting to fill the same space. "While possible, it is hard to let two statement perfumes coexist. I would always recommend subtle perfumes like our Jordan’s Perfume to layer with a leather scent." Tell us about the look you selected for the Tom Ford show. What about this look immediately caught your eye? 

My look for Tom Ford was selected by Elizabeth Saltzman (presumably on behalf of Tom) and styled by Micaela Erlanger. I was both flattered and shocked that they had confidence in me to pull off a leather bra! But one really cannot go wrong when wearing Tom Ford. Although this season’s look is a great departure from what I normally would select for myself, it turned out to be my favorite look of the week! A buttery leather bralette was paired with silky, slouchy lime-green cargo pants and completed with the iconic Tom glasses. When in Tom Ford, one instantly feels and looks fucking fabulous. 

What do you love about Tom Ford’s approach to design? 

Tom is the embodiment of chic, and it overflows into all of his designs. I love that he knows and respects a woman’s body in a manner to best accentuate the right curves and bits. He is simultaneously daring and playful, sensual and strong, polished and fun, luxurious and delicate. The quality and craftsmanship is second to none, and the understated richness of each piece is a perpetual tease. I have jokingly told the TF team that if I were ever stranded on an island and could only wear one designer for the rest of my life, it would definitely be Tom Ford, as I am also incredibly comfortable in every piece!

What was the inspiration for your hair and makeup? 

[From Micaela Erlanger]: We drew inspiration from 2000s-meets-’80s references. From big smoked-out eyes to lime-green nails, a high half-pony, and touch of body glitter, this look had it all and hit the right notes. 

[From Christine]: I got a light emergency spray tan against Micaela’s will, and I am not mad at it! 

What about jewelry? Do you have a rule of thumb when it comes to accessorizing? 

My first love and encounter with jewelry began with high jewelry and suites of jewelry, whereby they all match in a set and are worn as such. Along the way, I have acquired an appreciation for mixing and matching. The latter is so much more fun. I now love to layer with less hefty or substantial pieces from different jewelry designers and add to my heart’s content. I am very enthusiastic about collecting vintage, fine, and high jewelry pieces that play well with others.

Okay, let’s pull back a bit. What do you love about attending fashion week in New York? 

NYFW is raw, fierce, vibrant, and exciting! The streetstyle is infused with so much creativity and personality, and the runways are filled with surprising talent. NYFW celebrates diversity in an effortless, authentic way that I haven’t seen other fashion weeks accomplish as powerfully. The spectrum of cultures infused in the designs, range, and backgrounds of emerging to established designers, and clash of the high and low (uptown, downtown) during NYFW keeps me on the edge of my seat. NYFW is truly a global melting pot of artistry and flavor.

Looking back on the week, is there a show that really stood out to you and why? 

This NYFW was one of anniversaries and celebrations, from Fendi’s 25th anniversary of the Baguette to Dennis Basso’s 40th to Pamella Roland’s 20th, Bloomingdale’s 150th, Harlem’s Fashion Row’s 15th and even the Metropolitan Museum Friends of the Costume Institute’s 20th. The vibe was coming together and honoring the industry and people of fashion. In that same vein, Vogue’s 130th celebration, via #VogueWorld, was a standout show. #VogueWorld not only attracted incredible talent both on the runway and in the seats; it created a unified vision with countless acclaimed designers and brands and also loudly projected a clear messaging of diversity, inclusivity, and community in fashion. It was fun, quirky, and out of this world! 

New York is our first look at the trends that will dominate spring 2023. Did you spot any that you are particularly excited about? 

As a little girl, I grew up in a purple house with shades of purple wallpaper, furniture, carpet, drapery, and more because my mother loved the color so much! Needless to say, I have avoided hues of lilac for most of my adult life. During this fashion week, Micaela encouraged a beautiful silky YSL suit in royal purple as a nod to my mother (who passed away) and also to reintroduce this beautiful tone back into my fashion palette. Micaela was on to something, as all variations of purple could be seen throughout this season’s runway collections. Sequins, silks, and see-throughs seem to also prevail on the catwalk for NYFW S/S 23.

Let’s talk about your street style looks. You partnered with stylist Micaela Erlanger. What was your vision for the week? 

Fashion for me is expressive, experimental, and should tell a story of who I am, who I want to be, or where I’ve come from. I tasked Micaela to utilize her selections and styling to show a range of Christine, because beauty, to me, is multidimensionality. Whereas the Tom Ford look was sporty-chic, LaQuan was sensual, Jason Wu was romantic, Monot was vixen, YSL was large and in charge, Jonathan Simkhai was cocktail-chic, and Pamella Roland was flirty-sweet. I wore an archival Thierry Mugler velvet dress to the Fashion Media Awards, as I am obsessed with fashion history. Wearing his piece allowed me to reflect upon and speak about his incredible contributions to fashion—the late Manfred Thierry Mugler was one of the first designers to champion and celebrate diversity/inclusivity. He was also a pioneer in playing with shapes, cuts, and materials. 

How would you say your approach to street style at NYFW is different from Couture Week in Paris?

Without doubt, NYFW is very different from Couture Week in Paris. I wanted to be immersed in all the feels of New York but without losing myself and my personal aesthetic. Micaela worked with the various brands and houses to pull pieces that were able to achieve this delightful balance of New York spirit with a splash of glam. In terms of logistics, for Couture Week, I am wearing pieces of haute couture that I have purchased and own. For NYFW, brands worked with Micaela to dress me. Both are equally interesting and exciting.

During a week of nonstop shows and events, what are your skincare and beauty essentials? 

"Me” time is the hottest show of the season on my fashion calendar! I have recently obliged myself to scheduling out personal time for reflection, rejuvenation, and refreshment on my calendar, whether that includes mediative time, a nap, facial, or massage. This self-care time during NYFW was a 90-minute facial experience with Mario Badescu spa, during which I was steamed, toned, rehydrated, collagen-enhanced, and sent back out to the fashion streets refreshed and glowing. 

Most memorable moment from the week? 

I was asked to be a part of Oscar de la Renta’s S/S 23 video campaign, which was shot in the midst of fashion week and in lieu of their traditional runway show. It was such an honor and insanely fun. Can’t wait to see it soon!

Who What Wear beauty editors agree there's one question that tends to come up when people find out what we do for a living, and it's usually "What inspired you to want to write about beauty?" Amy Odell is a fashion journalist, former editor at Cosmopolitan.com, and a founding blogger of New York Magazine's The Cut, but her latest work tackles fashion from a different perspective. She's profiling one of its most influential and somewhat mysterious figures, Anna Wintour. Odell, who also authored the fashion industry tell-all Tales from the Back Row, interviewed over 250 sources for the definitive biography of the longtime Vogue editor, which is titled Anna: The Biography. (None of them, however, were actually Wintour.)

In the latest episode of our podcast, Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Odell talks about how the book came to be, the harrowing process of interviewing all those sources, and whether she thinks the woman behind that iconic bob and sunglasses actually cares about fashion. She's obviously a very fascinating person, but I'm curious about your own motivation and desire to write this book. Why this book, and why now?

I started on the book in 2018, and it came to me through the publisher—they had had the idea. And I knew one of the editors over who I worked with on the book, Karyn Marcus, who was phenomenal. She acquired my first book, so that was that connection. I didn't think I would ever write a book like this, to be honest with you. I wanted to write essays. I wanted to write humor. I didn't think I was ever going to write a biography. I was waiting to go into labor with my son, and I must have been five days late. So I was super stressed out about that. And I get this call from my agent, and she says, "They're interested in an Anna biography, and they thought of you. What do you think about that?" And I got a shiver up my spine. I just got chills. I thought, "That sounds like an incredible assignment." I got on the phone with Karyn and another editor, Aimée Bell. And Aimée said it's the idea that's hiding in plain sight.

Also around this time in 2018, I'm sure you remember this, Hillary, but there were rumors that Anna was going to leave Vogue. And they were printed in the New York Post, and it trended on Twitter, and huge fashion stories don't blow up like this. But Anna is an icon who transcends fashion, and she's a significant part of culture and has been for 34 years. And when you think of the opportunity with a book about someone like Anna, it is one thing to get to the top. It is another to stay there. And she has been there running Vogue since the summer of 1988. And as I said, 34 years at the helm. You think of other business leaders like Jeff Bezos. He left [his role as CEO of] Amazon after 27. So this is extremely unusual, this tenure, and she has had this remarkable power in fashion. Yet despite having this public position, she has remained an enigma, even to people who know her, and I wanted Anna: The Biography to pull back the curtain on who she really is as a person and as a mega, mega influencer. 

I love the nitty-gritty details of how it all comes together, so I would be curious about anything that you are able to share about your process.

It was extremely difficult, extremely difficult. In the beginning, I thought I was gonna have to give up, and I wasn't gonna be able to get it done because you just have to call a lot of people and reach out to a lot of people, and I got a lot of "nos," like weeks of "nos," and that's really dispiriting. But I ultimately figured out how to make some progress. I went back to the beginning of Anna's life, and I decided to report chronologically. I had some success with that strategy. The thinking was that people who she knew when she was 20 would be much more distant from her than people she knew when she was 60. And that turned out to be the case with those people. It was easier to get people from a long time ago to talk. I made a lot of progress, and after about a year and a half of working on the book, Anna got wind of the fact that I was working on it. I was very careful. The reason I was so careful was because when I was approaching people, they would say one of two things. Some people said, "She's gonna shut you down, and she's gonna use Conde Nast to shut you down. And they're going to do everything they can to make sure that this doesn't happen, and if they have to threaten your publisher, though, they'll threaten your publisher." The other group of people said, "I thought she was great, and I think she's going to help you with this." That group of people turned out to be right. She did end up helping me. And what happened was after about a year and a half, I spoke to a representative in her office, and I explained this as a biography about a woman in a unique position of power, and what came of that conversation is that they said, "Anna would like to set you up with some of her closest friends and colleagues for interviews." They sent over a list of names that included people like Tom Ford, Serena Williams, and Hamish Bowles, who has been at Vogue for a very long time. And I subsequently asked if she would be okay with me interviewing a number of other people who wouldn't talk to me without her saying okay, and she said yes to every single person. This was all done through her rep. She declined herself to sit for an interview. She declined several requests to sit for an interview. But once that happened, the floodgates opened for me, so I was able to get the people who would be the main characters of her career, like Grace Coddington, Phyllis Posnick, and Sally Singer in addition to Serena Williams and Tom Ford. So that was major, and people who had [first] hung up on me picked up the phone to talk to me. You have to be really, really persistent as a journalist, as you well know. And you have to go back and ask people again and again and again, and it all ultimately came together. It was a lot of work. It was very, very hard. A lot of doubt along the way.

So I'm curious about whether you personally, after all of these years of being immersed in her psyche, think… Does she care about fashion? Does she care about power? Does she care about influence? What's the most important thing to her, in your mind?

Different people have different answers to that question, which is partly what makes her a different subject. I asked a lot of people. Is she an introvert or an extrovert? And people couldn't come to a consensus on that question, which I thought was crazy. But I got a lot of answers, like you can't put her in a box like that. You also get different answers to the question, What is her passion? Some people are going to tell you she loves fashion. Some people will tell you she's all about power. André Leon Talley said she's all about power. Or her friend David Hare, the playwright in London, told me she's not about power at all. And he was funny because I asked him if Anna had talked about meeting the queen, and we've all seen those photos of Anna and the queen front row at a fashion show at London Fashion Week. And he said they were just laughing about it. They just thought it was so funny that she had had that opportunity. And he didn't think she was about power at all. So I think, "What do you draw from that?" What I draw from that is that she shows different sides of herself to different people, and she is good at compartmentalizing.

Celebrity stylist Kate Young is responsible for some of the biggest fashion moments we've seen on the red carpet, and her illustrious list of clientele includes Selena Gomez, Margot Robbie, and Jennifer Lawrence. Before she became one of Hollywood's most in-demand wardrobe stylists, she worked in magazines, including a stint as Anna Wintour's assistant in 1997. Cut to 25 years later, and her career has come full circle. Now, Young frequently dresses her famous clients for one of the biggest nights in fashion—the Met Gala. 

In our latest episode, we chat with Young as she gets ready to style Dakota Johnson, Sophie Turner, and Julianne Moore for the big day. We learn about the inspiration behind all of their looks, the hardest lessons she had to learn from Met Galas past, and why she's on a big opulence kick as of late. Let's talk about this theme, which is the second of a two-part series celebrating American fashion. Last year, we had In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. This year, we have In America: An Anthology of Fashion. How are you interpreting that theme?

I'm not someone who does really insane, over-the-top looks for the Met. It's not really my thing. I don't do costume. And I like a certain kind of ease. So I always approached the Met Ball with what's appropriate, what would look cool in this space. I worked at Vogue for a long time. So I went to Met Balls and worked at them for years and years and years. And in my mind, I'm always thinking about what the image is going to look like of the client and the dress. And I still want it to look like them. I still want it to be part of the story that we're creating together. I've been on a real opulence tear of late, like I just want to see opulence. I think we've spent two years at home, and the world's kind of falling apart. You read the news, and it's really hard to feel happy or to feel excited about life, but the truth is life goes on, and if I'm gonna live, I want to see some sparkle and diamonds and glamour. I am really happy for a moment of escape, and I think that's what the Met is about. This is a night of frivolity. It's an extravaganza, so I already was thinking about that. 

For part one last year, you dressed Lili Reinhart and Sienna Miller, but to keep things interesting, you are dressing three different women this year—Sophie Turner, Julianne Moore, and Dakota Johnson. How did you arrive at their looks? 

So with Julianne Moore, she's going with Tom Ford. And the inspiration for that was Jackie Kennedy. We have this picture of Jackie Kennedy at an event, and she's wearing opera-length gloves and diamonds. I think she really symbolizes the lexicon of American fashion in a way although she wore a lot of French designers. She was a great American clotheshorse and the epitome of elegance, and [there are] lots of pictures of her in white-tie too. So that was the inspiration with Julianne. It's quite a classic, timeless, elegant evening look. Then Dakota is going with Gucci, so you know, opulence extravaganza is what we're dealing with. So that was fairly straightforward, and that look isn't entirely set yet, so it could go one of two ways, but the whole thing is spangled. Any way it goes, there's going to be spangles everywhere. That's our take on gilded glamour. It's just like, cover it in crystals. And then for Sophie Turner… Sophie's super pregnant, and she's wearing Louis Vuitton, and Louis Vuitton has a whole concept this Met Ball, which is that they're not making anything new as an eco move. So people are rewearing dresses they've worn before. They're wearing dresses other people have worn. The idea was the dress needed to exist. It was really fun going through all the Louis Vuitton archives and seeing what would look good on Sophie and what would suit her body right now. So she's wearing an older Louis Vuitton dress that's fully studded, and we're really going for the theme more in her hair and makeup than in her dress.

The [styling] process is a little bit different for the Met, where it's almost designer-led in that sense, correct?

One-hundred percent. So unless you're invited by Vogue—and then you can kind of wear whatever you want—you are going with a designer who bought your ticket, and you are there to embody their vision for this Met Gala. And so there is always a collaboration. I think it's why designers and actresses work well together, because everybody's an artist, and they like collaboration, and they get inspired by each other. But for me as a stylist, when a designer is taking an actress, I have a lot less control than I do when it's like the Oscars, where I have a rail of dresses, and I'm saying "This is the dress." For the Met, it's the designer saying, "This is the dress," and I'm going, "How are we making this look like her?" So it's funny. Like you said in the intro, it's the Super Bowl of fashion, and I'm like, "Meh, not really." For me, Cannes is the Super Bowl of fashion.

We've heard stories over the years of people having to stand the whole time so that there aren't wrinkles or something breaking at the last second and somebody having to sew their client in. I'm curious about any of your tips or tricks for massive moments like this.

My number one tip that I learned the hard way—and I think it's the best piece of advice I could give to any celebrity stylist—is that when you get to the room where they're going to have the hair and makeup done at the beginning, try the dress on them. That way, you accomplish a number of things: You know that the zipper works. You know that it fits, because a woman's measurements change three times a day. If they ate sushi last night, the zipper might be tight. So just to check everything. You usually have two or three hours, so you can solve things in that much time. And also just creatively for the hair and makeup, I think it's really good for them to see the dress in person. To look at it and look at her in the dress, they know what they're dealing with in a way. One time, we went to put on the dress, and the alterations were off, and I had to sew it, and it was a disaster. That was like 15 years ago, but I will never forget it was awful. I also had Nina Dobrev wear a 3D-printed dress one year, and she went in a sprinter, and Vogue had to be alerted because she couldn't sit in a chair. She had a little stool to sit in because her dress was hard. She literally couldn't sit back on anything.

I have a problem. 

Somehow, despite owning drawers and drawers of sweatshirts, I cannot stop buying more. Here’s what happens: I go to boutiques or department stores with the intention of buying new jeans, maybe finding appropriate shoes to wear to work, or sometimes I literally just go to Soho to walk my dog and browse. And yet in all of these scenarios, I have somehow left with a new sweatshirt. This happens so much that my closet is approximately 80% sweatshirts, 15% other clothing, and 5% dog hair.

For a large portion of the year, I cannot defend my actions. "Gaby, why in the world do you need a lavender, sherpa-lined hoodie in August?” my mom might ask, as we FaceTime so I can show her my latest treasure and then quickly hang up when I realize I have no justifiable answer. This goes on for a few months every year, and as my drawer of sweatshirts increases, the temperature starts to decrease. Finally, it’s sweater weather. 

This is all to say that I have a lot of experience in the densely populated sweatshirt industry and have therefore rounded up the 16 best designer sweatshirts to keep you warm and toasty this winter.
