Amy Smilovic, founder and creative director of Tibi, doesn't fit her personal style—or her brand—in one box. This realization led Smilovic to coin the term "creative pragmatism" in her book The Creative Pragmatist. "The idea was born out of just frustration that I had had for years not being able to define my brand in one word, which seems to be the expectation in the industry," Smilovic said. As Smilovic notes, creative pragmatists have a creative eye but are grounded in practicality. "I came up with the term creative pragmatists to really describe someone who is highly creative and expressive, but they're still very pragmatic," Smilovic said. "Their feet are really rooted on the ground."

For the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Smilovic sits down with Who What Wear Editor in Chief Kat Collings to share how she landed on her signature phrase, what defines a Without Fail in your wardrobe, and more.

I'm thrilled to sit down and talk about your philosophy and the book you wrote about it. It's all centered around creative pragmatism—a term that you coined to describe your personal style as well as your design ethos. For those who may be a little less familiar, can you share a little bit about where this idea came from?

The idea was born out of just frustration that I had had for years not being able to define my brand in one word, which seems to be the expectation in the industry. People ask you, "Are you sexy? Are you edgy? Are you feminine?" I never could say just one, and I needed to come up with a word—or at least a phrase—that people could immediately understand what my brand was about and that would not make it so singular in focus.

I came up with the term "creative pragmatist" to describe someone who is highly creative and expressive, but they're still very pragmatic. Their feet are rooted on the ground. What they wear has to be very tethered to functionality. It was just this notion that someone could be drawn to prints. You could be drawn to color, and you could also be drawn to minimalism and hardcore functionality. People really are convinced you're either one or the other, and I feel very comfortable living in the gray.

I don't see things in black-and-white. I know that there's a nuanced middle, but sometimes, if you give a name to it, it allows people to get their arms around it a little bit faster and understand it. It turned out that a lot of people were frustrated by these one-name descriptions. They were much more multidimensional than those names would indicate. Creative pragmatism was a good way for a lot of people to describe their style.

Do you find that some pieces you design lean more on one end of the scale of creative and some are more pragmatic and more utility oriented?

In this exercise that started around 2019 of coming up with the idea of creative pragmatists, the next thing was coming up with this idea of describing what had to be baked into the clothing in order for something to make me feel creative and pragmatic at the same time. That is when I came up with the idea of defining myself by three adjectives. This was around 2020. It was right when COVID hit, and I had started talking online and doing more and more stories.

The concept of describing myself in three ways as chill, modern, and classic all at the same time seemed to encapsulate what I was about and what I craved in my clothing. … For the pieces that I wear the most, they are all three of those things at all times. Some things might be a little more chill. Maybe it's a sweatpant, but it still has to be modern, and there still has to be a classic element to it. Something might be super, super modern, but if it's not a bit effortless and if I can't see a through line to heritage somewhere, then it feels like modernity for the sake of modernity.

We design very heavily in that sweet spot—a balance of chill, modern, and classic, which is what a creative pragmatist is drawn to.

You also have this concept of WOFs—Without Fails—and they're a key component of our creative pragmatist's wardrobe. Will you tell us quickly what those are? How much of your closet should be Without Fails?

Without Fails are literally the definition, right? … Every time, you can pull them out, and they work without fail. They are such a fundamental part of a creative pragmatist's closet because creativity is literally 50% of the word, right? You want to be able to express your creativity. You want to be able to push and try new things, but you also want to feel grounded, and you want to feel like yourself.

What those Without Fails do is they're so intrinsically you. They're such a part of your body and your makeup. If I were to have on a pair of navy-blue wool, oversize cargo pants, for instance. You can give me the most over-the-top piece from Margiela, Loewe, whoever, and I'm going to put it on with those pants, and you're going to see me in it. But if I put on that Margiela cutout, whatever, crazy, clear, vinyl thing… If I were to also pair it with a pair of pants from JW Anderson, that's street style. It's someone else's style. I wouldn't see me in there anywhere. I wouldn't have that through line.

Those Without Fails are that through line so that, no matter what you're experimenting with, you still find yourself in there. … If you're going shopping and you're really wanting to push and buy something new, always shop wearing one of your Without Fails. If I'm trying things on at Balenciaga and I know that I'm going to wear it with my big pleated Stella Pant or my big Liam Blazer and it's going to work together, now I know for certain I'm gonna wear it. And I'm gonna wear it a lot.

If I've got to buy a whole new wardrobe to support this thing, it's never gonna happen. These Without Fails, they are your through line. They do have to have a point of view. When we talk about chill, modern, and classic, that modernity is key. It's got to have a point of view. I think that's a mistake a lot of people make. When they buy a basic, they think that it has to be so noncommittal so that they can wear it every day. When something is noncommittal, it's very average. If you are choosing something that you're gonna wear every day, you're basically saying outright, "I want to feel average and noncommittal every day." No one wants that.

Let your things have a point of view, but they don't need to become the whole story. These pieces work in your closet to ground you, and then go get that amazing vintage piece. Pull out your grandmother's old sweater. When you wear it with this nylon jogger that you live in, you're going to see yourself in it, and it's going to feel like you, and you're going to be recognized—if to no one else but yourself.

Costume designer Stacey Battat knows that every project always starts with a mood board. Her latest is no exception.

Battat worked with longtime collaborator Sofia Coppola on her recently released film, Priscilla, in which Battat used fashion to help tell the story of Priscilla Presley.

"She [Coppola] usually puts together some sort of mood board,” Battat said. "From there, I think I put together my own mood boards, or we start to talk about colors—because a lot of the colors in that movie are based on what were the actual colors of the ’60s—and then how to integrate our color palette with those things.”

Battat and Coppola have worked together for years, including on projects such as The Bling Ring and The Beguiled.

I know that this isn't the first time that you've worked with director Sofia Coppola. I'm wondering if you can talk a little bit about how she initially approached you with this concept and if that's different from how you've worked together in the past?

Originally, there was another project that was kind of on the horizon. Then it started domino-effecting post-pandemic.

At some point, she said, "I think I'm going to put it aside.” I'd been working on the Priscilla project, and then she sent the script, and I read it, which is normally the way we do things.

She [Coppola] usually puts together some sort of mood board. From there, I think I put together my own mood boards, or we start to talk about colors—because a lot of the colors in that movie are based on what they actually wore, what were the actual colors of the ’60s—and then how to integrate our color palette with those things.

When you think about a mood board, are you focusing on era? Are you looking at the entirety of it? What does that look like?

All of it. I think first, colors are important. From there with Priscilla, there's also some other aspects. We're also trying to create a transitional wardrobe for her that ages her to a certain extent.

Then there's the period-appropriate aspect. With Priscilla, I think it was just super important to just have her in younger-looking silhouettes in the '50s—and some of that is adapted.

There's photos of her in a dress with big buttons, but it has kind of a slimmer skirt, and we made the skirt bigger so that it kept within that childish silhouette of the early part.

As we move through, there's kind of slimmer silhouettes, then '60s shifts, and then when she's really kind of finding herself, more pants.

As you mentioned, you did so much work looking at archives, looking at what has been worn. I'm wondering about how that collaboration between you and Sofia [Coppola] worked? Are there parts of the stories that had to be tweaked to show some of those moments? Or is it that the big plot points coincide with some of these iconic fashion moments organically?

They are a big part of the story, I would say, and were never added in to show them.

I feel like when he [Elvis Presley] leaves Germany in our story, it's the very first time she's seeing him as a public figure.

I mean, obviously, she knows he's a public figure, but their relationship up until that point is very intimate.

Then she waves goodbye, and it's like, now all of a sudden, he belongs to the world again. That, I think, was a very important story part.

Obviously, the wedding is important. The baby is important.

The last one, that family portrait, I think is so important, because to me, that photo was really indicative of how they grew apart.

He becomes so much more elaborate with the sideburns and the jewelry. She becomes so much more pared down with less makeup and a more natural silhouette and the hair and all of it.

To me, I saw that photo, and I thought, that's a visual understanding of how they split apart.

Nikki Ogunnaike never had a particular position in her career that she was working toward. After graduating college in 2007, Ogunnaike knew that she liked to write and loved fashion but thought that she'd be a market director for the rest of her career. "That's sort of what I imagined," Ogunnaike said. "I was like, 'I'm gonna be a market director by the time I'm 30, and then I'm gonna be there forever.'"

The internet changed that. As bloggers were becoming a more prominent force in the fashion industry, Ogunnaike decided that she wanted to go after a digital job and landed a role at Glamour. As they say, the rest is history. Since then, Ogunnaike has gone on to hold positions at Harper's Bazaar, Elle.com, and GQ, just to name a few. In August 2023, Ogunnaike started a new role as editor in chief at Marie Claire.

For this episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Ogunnaike sits down with our editor in chief, Kat Collings, to share how her career has evolved, how she's developed her personal style, and more.

How has your transition been so far? Are you still in the learning-and-listening phase would you say?

I mean, definitely. I think I'm going to be in a learning-and-listening phase at least for the next two years, honestly. I sort of have this game plan, and my inclination is to want to get everything done at once, but I just got here. It's only been two months.

Not everything has to change—or needs to change or should change. I just want to be cognizant of not rushing everything at once.

Your previous role was as senior digital director at Harper's Bazaar, but your résumé is long and impressive. I've admired your career from afar for a long time, and I'm hoping you can tell me a bit about your trajectory and your aspirations. Was it the editor in chief position that you were always working toward?

I don't think in my career I've actually ever been working toward one position. I graduated from college in 2007, and my dream was to work in fashion. At that time, I knew I liked to write, and I knew I liked fashion. The only sort of fashion job I knew or understood after all of my internships was a market director.

A market director is the person who helps logistically when it comes to getting photo shoots together and working with stylists. That's what I imagined. I was like, "I'm gonna be a market director by the time I'm 30, and then I'm gonna be there forever."

Then, I was working at InStyle. This was around the time of when the internet was just starting to get big, and it was becoming a thing. I saw all of the opportunities that my friends who were budding bloggers were getting, but I knew I didn't want to go out on my own. I knew I didn't want to become a blogger myself, so I figured I would go after a digital job.

That's how I ended up at Glamour. I was the style editor there. I wrote fashion and beauty posts. From there, it's just sort of grown and grown—my career has. I took a detour back into print when I went to GQ, but I really wanted to try something new.

I'd been a little burned out at my job previously, and I think every job that I've had I've always been like, "I don't want that job." When I was a fashion editor, I was like, "I don't want to be a digital director. Seems like too much work." Then I was like, "I don't want to be an editor in chief. Seems like too much work." Here I am having done both.

Despite your best efforts, you just keep climbing that ladder.

I just keep climbing that ladder. I think that in my last two jobs—this job and the one before it—I was approached for the jobs. In being approached, I've realized that I could do the job, and I could do a good job at the job. So that's sort of how the trajectory has occurred.

Honestly, when it came to the Marie Claire job, I really wanted to work with Hillary [Kerr]. I think that she's so incredibly smart and prolific and has built an incredible brand in Who What Wear and the many other brands that she's helped launch. I really wanted to just be able to learn from her. That's generally how many of my jobs come together.

As a digital director at Harper's Bazaar, I wanted to work with Leah Chernikoff, and I wanted to work with Samira Nasr. I think it's more so for me the team that I'm going to be around and the team that I'm going to be able to build. The exact job itself is great, but it's more so about the team.

Can you describe how you've developed your personal style and which designers you can't stop wearing right now that you have on your radar?

My personal style is always and has always been rooted in comfort and functionality before anything else. When I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to wear for the day—especially during fashion month—I know that it has to be an outfit that's going to take me from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Comfort and function are always two things that are top of mind.

The purple top that I was wearing was Dries Van Noten, and I wear a lot of Dries because I think that he really creates beautiful clothing that can actually be worn.

I think a lot of designers create beautiful clothing, and sometimes they look like showpieces or they can't be worn every day or whatever it is, but Dries does a really good job of addressing all of the things that a woman has to go through and her day-to-day and really just makes me feel put together and beautiful but also concretely myself.

You see the art on my walls. I love color. I think it's a really great way to make an impact with a very low lift. So lots of color in my wardrobe.

I wore a lot of Dries this season. I wore a lot of Tibi. Amy [Smilovic] over at Tibi is just doing such amazing things and really just addressing a woman's day-to-day.

J.Crew, obviously. I also have always been a fan of the brand from the Jenna Lyons days to Olympia [Gayot]. Now I think she's doing amazing things and really has revived the brand.

Margiela. Everyone has a Tabi boot, Tabi shoe sort of story.

I just got Tabi boots two years ago. I want to say they're surprisingly comfortable, but they're the same thing as I was saying: a simple shoe that you can wear with anything—simple I say in quotes because it's literally a camel-toe shoe, so it's a funny simple shoe but maximum impact, low lift.

Then Kallmeyer. Daniella Kallmeyer is a designer that I met in New York, but I finally got to see her pieces up close and break bread with her over Paris Fashion Week. I've worn a lot of her stuff as well. She's an amazing New York–based designer who I'm really excited to support.

They're best when paired with unexpected tops and footwear, and the key to styling your pairs is doing so in an entirely non-fitness fashion and acting as if they were any other trousers that you'd style alongside kitten heels, statement handbags, and tops that don't include a built-in sports bra.

For day three of New York Fashion Week, I knew I wanted to wear Tibi track pants since the brand's show was that day, and its Active Scottie Joggers are one of my favorite items to come out of the NYC-based label in a few seasons now. I bought a pair in royal blue weeks before fashion week during the end-of-summer sales but opted for this striped pair since I love the homage to the classic Adidas track pants I grew up wearing. Instead of playing too far into the sporty aesthetic, I dressed up the trousers with what stylist Allison Bornstein refers to as the "wrong shoes," or footwear that would normally be considered a bad match for the rest of your outfit. Here, it just worked. I also added a Tibi bandana-tie strapless top, my green Prada Supernova bag for a pop of color, oval sunglasses, and silver jewelry.

Elsewhere in NYC, Magasin founder and EIC Laura Reilly styled her Adidas wide-leg track pants with flat slides, a simple white tank, and a fitted gray blazer. Easy and chic yet completely unexpected, the look checks off every box on the checklist titled "How to put together a great outfit."

When your pants are this cool, you don't need a whole lot else to craft a stellar outfit. That's the great thing about a statement piece like track pants. They speak for themselves. Just add a tank or tee, sneakers, and a bold handbag, and voilà! A look destined for compliments and praise.

We can't talk about the track-pant trend without acknowledging Grace Wales Bonner and her beloved collaboration with Adidas, which these yellow-stripe trousers are from. Though it's the sneakers from the ongoing collections that get the most acclaim, don't sleep on the RTW. As these pants prove, it's definitely worth taking a look at.

In many ways, fashion week is going back to basics. As New York Fashion Week comes to a close and fashion month continues in London, it's looking like designers are putting hyper-wearable looks on the runway. 

Who What Wear editor Eliza Huber shares how versatile these looks can be. "If you buy into it, you can have those pieces for the rest of your life, and they're not boring," Huber said. "You can still style them up in really, really interesting ways." Kat Collings, Who What Wear's editor in chief, echoed a similar sentiment about seeing looks off the runway in street style moments. "There were a lot of casual, wearable luxury looks," Collings said. "What I mean by that is a great pair of jeans with a tee and a designer bag and a killer little kitten heel." Kat Collings: You have such a great eye for trends. I'm curious about what you saw and which ones stood out to you. What do you think will be setting the tone for shopping for next spring?

Eliza Huber: There are always so many. It's kind of crazy how many trends can fit into a five- or six-day week. I split it up into two when I was doing my research ahead of this and just throughout the week. On one side, there's a lot of continuation from fall. We saw a lot of those chrome and gold hardware moments, specifically on bags or belts or those really large '80s-inspired earrings.

KC: What else trend-wise?

EH: Another one is this trend that we called ready-to-wear [last season], which is just this hyper-wearable trend that skews away from those really loud, hard-to-style pieces and is just super classic.

If you buy into it, you can have those pieces for the rest of your life, and they're not boring. You can still style them up in really, really interesting ways using things like those chrome moments or plenty of other styling methods. We saw a ton of it this week. Tibi's whole collection really felt like a "building blocks of your wardrobe" type of collection. Proenza [Schouler] had those loud moments as well, but really at the backbone of it were really classic, timeless pieces.

KC: At first glance, overall, there was a trend of quietness on the runway. Sometimes, you want to be shocked and awed by the visuals of it, but I do think the wearability element… I'm glad that designers are taking this into consideration, and it does feel like the runway to real way is not such a big gap anymore.

KC: What trends are you here for, and what are you not into?

EH: One of the things that I'm not yet convinced of is the net fabric when it comes to garments. I think Proenza [Schouler] did an amazing job. Those final halter dresses were incredible. When it comes to a trend as a whole, I'm not necessarily ready to put all of my money into it yet.

One of the trends that I'm absolutely loving, though, is the lacy details. I'm currently in the saving process for a gorgeous strapless lace top from Beaufille. It's super simple but just feels very romantic, which is something that I want to bring into my wardrobe more in the next few seasons.

EH: What were some of the trends you were loving IRL?

KC: There were a lot of casual, wearable luxury looks. What I mean by that is a great pair of jeans with a tee and a designer bag and a killer little kitten heel. The girls are loving Prada these days in that department.

Timeless maxi dresses, statement earrings. So actually, it's feeling like the end of the peacocking era that we've known in the street style realm for so long. In the past, I've been pulled to dress in ways that weren't actually my personal style just for that splashy moment. That seems to be coming to a close, actually. It had a long reign.

Why? Well, I just love how much you can do with a jumpsuit. Wear it open with a tee or cami underneath. Why not roll the sleeves up for a more relaxed approach? Or perhaps even channel your local mechanic, undo the top half and tie it around your waist. The world is your oyster and the time it takes you to decide and get dressed *should* decrease now that you've got the top and bottom half covered.

In fact, the jumpsuit is the all-occasions component for everyone. Doling out styling tips is tricky. After all, style is inherently personal, so if you want to consistently get that effortlessly cool look, you're probably not going to get it by copying tricks from the internet. That's why I always go to Amy Smilovic's Instagram when I need inspiration—she gets it. "Thinking in terms of outfits is like trying to learn a language by just memorizing words to string together random sentences," she tells me. "It’s when you really understand the language, the grammar, [and] the structure that you begin to communicate, effortlessly and with confidence." 

As the creative director of Tibi, the New York-based luxury brand she founded in 1997, Smilovic has mastered the difficult art of giving styling direction while simultaneously sharing with anyone who'll listen to her tips for understanding your own personal style and dressing accordingly. She's such an expert in the field, in fact, that she just wrote a book about it, titled The Creative Pragmatist. Specifically, the book focuses on a sartorial philosophy that she calls "creative pragmatism," which is meant for the dresser who "craves the emotion that style can elicit with functionality and utility," Smilovic explains. She wrote The Creative Pragmatist after her DMs were flooded with messages about all things personal style: "The book was my way to put all my thoughts in one place—an encyclopedia of sorts for those who like to take an analytical—in addition to the visceral and emotional—approach to style."

By the end of it, the idea is for the reader to have every tool they need to start understanding the approach they want to take with their personal style and kickstart their unique styling journey. For all other times, the goal is for you to get to know yourself and your style intimately enough that you won't necessarily need external support—you'll just know. 

1. Play around with proportions

"When something doesn’t feel right—not modern or effortless enough—it’s usually proportions that are the culprit. The balance of big, slim, and some skin always works for me."

"I make sure each element I’m wearing reflects my core—chill, modern, and classic. Whether it’s just a big shirt or a dress, if the piece has all those elements, I feel most myself. Our Sid Jean is a great example of this. It’s so easy, it’s absolutely modern, and it’s denim, [so it's] quite classic in that respect."

3. Incorporate friction

"I always make sure something that I’m wearing is giving a bit of friction—a little strange or unexpected. My personality is such that I don’t like things to be too expected. I always have a strange, little earring around, an odd sock, or an irreverent shoe that will do the trick."

4. Start to experiment with colors that click with neutrals in your wardrobe

"I really focus on key colors in my closet. I like knowing I can go in there blindfolded and choose any items and they’ll work together. This doesn’t mean a black and white wardrobe—it’s about really understanding a range of neutrals and how to work in more saturated colors. If that’s your thing—it is my thing."

5. Organize your closet by WOFs

I organize my closet by WOFs (without fails)—or pieces that are inextricably me—that I could pair with the most over the top item from Loewe’s runway and it would ground me. I would not be in costume or overly trendy—you would still see me in there and I would see me. I also love trying new things, so of course, I have an area of pieces I collect that are very modern, new, and experimental, but they have to go with my 'without fails.' If they don’t, I lose my identity [and] personal style. This is a solid way to be able to lean into style without losing yourself in the process or wasting so much because of misfires (things you buy but never wear).

6. Skip neutral bras and invest in colorful ones

"I have a small assortment of bras in a range of colors. Life is too short to worry about bra straps showing. Just own it. Color makes it more intentional."

7. Don't buy repeats of the same things

"I don’t repeat styles in my closet. If I have a drawer of white tees, then I have an oversize one, a baby tee, a deep scoop-neck tee, [and] a plunge V-neck tee. I find that [to be] a big mistake people often make, buying the same style over and over. A range of fits allows u to really play with proportions."

8. Dress for you

"I always dress to feel like myself. There’s no such thing as clothing for 'events' and then clothing for [everything else]. Every day, every hour is your life—dress like yourself in every moment. Wear your clothes. This doesn’t mean sequins at the grocery store, [it] means observe what makes you feel best and employ that in your clothes for every facet of your life. Your sweatpants, your tees, your laying on the couch all day on a Sunday clothes, [included]."

It's rare in the social media age—when, if you follow the right people, you can spot a trend coming from a mile away—for a fad to actually sneak up on you. Normally, the signs are all there. But in the case of overalls, it took all but a few weeks for the once "frumpy" onesies to go from outdated to one of fall's most sought-after wardrobe items. These days, they're everywhere.

I first spotted a pair during Oslo Runway on influencer Annabel Rosendahl. Pairing it with an oversize tee, Saint Laurent's cult-favorite Le 5 à 7 shoulder bag, and point-toe heels, the Norwegian made the utilitarian silhouette appear surprisingly elevated. My attention was piqued, but one good outfit doesn't make a trend, so I wrote it off as a fluke and went on with my day. Not long after, I noted the silhouette on the runway during New York Fashion Week, first at Brandon Maxwell and later at Coach and Tibi. By the time fashion month was over, it was already too late to get ahead of the trend. It was already here, on everyone from model Elsa Hosk to French influencer and recent Mango collaborator Camille Charrière.

Tibi is the ultimate New York City cool-girl brand. That is because of its mindful founder and creative director, Amy Smilovic. In 1997, Smilovic launched Tibi as she was living in Hong Kong, and it was only a matter of time before Tibi proved itself as a key player within the fashion industry, garnering the attention of major retailers like Nordstrom, Saks, and Neiman Marcus. Then, in 2010, Smilovic took a major risk: She decided to completely redesign and reimagine the brand to align with her current aesthetic and feelings. Too often, fashion brands can get so caught up in outside influence from buyers and clients that they lose their original vision and ethos, which Smilovic refused to let happen to Tibi. Thus, her risk transformed into a reward. 

With a newfound focus on what Smilovic refers to as "creative pragmatism" in mindset and style, she successfully pulled off a 180-degree brand pivot. In fact, throughout the pandemic, Smilovic launched an IG Live Style Class, where she spoke to this way of designing and Tibi's DNA, ultimately fostering a dedicated following. Regardless of what year you came into this world, we can all learn a thing or two about style from our wiser fashion counterparts. These are the women who have lived to see generations worth of trends come and go and have spent the better half of a lifetime honing in on what they can now claim as a strong sense of personal style. Since this group of women offers a wealth of knowledge, I was curious to know what kind of style lessons they can teach the rest of us.

I spoke with a handful of the many chic older women I've taken to following on Instagram for style inspiration. Grece Ghanem is a 54-year-old from Montréal with a penchant for print-mixing and "old Céline." Lyn Slater, otherwise known as Accidental Icon, is a 65-year-old from New York whose career took off when she started blogging several years ago. Finally, Renata Jazdzyk is a 50-something living in Newcastle you've seen wearing all the buzzy street style looks. They each shared the fashion "mistakes" from their past, what they learned from them, and how they choose to dress instead now.

To be clear, I say the word mistakes lightly. We all make them, and I'm not here to shame anyone's sartorial choices but rather to celebrate and share the wisdom that only comes after taking the time to reflect on how you'd like to evolve your style. This kind of self-reflection doesn't necessarily require having decades of outfits to look back on (people of any age can vow to make better fashion habits at any point), but the years each of them has under their belt certainly gives more weight to the following advice.

With Fashion Week Australia nearing its end for another year, the season’s major trends have become obvious, reappearing time and time again on and off the runways. So far, 2018 has been a year of bright, bold colours, but based on what we’ve seen throughout the week, things are about to get a lot more subdued.

More neutral-based, earthy tones were everywhere at Fashion Week Australia with three in particular standing out: moss green, sky blue, and chocolate brown. Even now, in 2018, women continue discovering new ways to own their power. In fact, it’s a constantly exciting time to experience. Of course, being the fashion editors we are, it’s our duty to consider how this all plays out in how we get dressed. After all, clothing is the exterior shell with which we arm ourselves every day, and if the all-black #TimesUp dress code at the Golden Globes taught us anything, it’s that what we wear can be a powerful tool in our fight for equality and justice. Trends can matter.

So what happens when a fashion item with as layered a history as the corset circles back in vogue? From simple lace-up panels adoring cotton tops and dresses alike to the wide waist belts we saw everyone wearing over jackets and coats this winter, the corset’s modern influence is hard to ignore. It can’t be forgotten that the original garment was defined by its physically constricting shape and imposing social rigidity, but we do we draw a line between what women wore in 1618 and 2018? If you clicked into this post hoping for an answer to the question at hand—Can we wear corsets and still call ourselves feminists?—my initial conclusion is yes: We can indeed reconcile being an advocate for gender equality today while wearing a trend that references the corset’s constricting history.

Here’s the thing: Wearing corset shapes today is completely a choice, and we should celebrate the fact that this choice (all our sartorial choices, in fact) are wholly, unabashedly our own. It was not always the case for women’s clothing. While trends dictate what most people will gravitate toward at any given time, there’s no denying that the clothes we pick out each morning signal to the world our own personal values, not those of societal restrictions, and that is something to celebrate. As women, we were not always given this freedom, and there’s no example that illustrates this better than the corset.

“Any respectable woman had to wear it in public, to a dance, anywhere where propriety maintaining image was important,” according to Valerie Steel, director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “It was ultimately clothing for elite women, though even working women would strive to wear corsets.” The waist-defining structure became such a standard of dress that anyone who emerged in public sans corset was seen as existing on the fringes of society, Steel shared. This kind of immense social pressure to wear the garment is what makes it problematic.

Corsets weren’t just figurately oppressive, either. If you’ve made it through the first 20 minutes of Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ve understood the pain Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) endures while her maid cinches the laces of her bodice to impossibly tight lengths. Historically, corsets were either incorporated into the bodice or worn separately underneath a dress, according to Steele: “As the shape changes, you could say that it creates a smaller waist in comparison with the hips,” to put it lightly. By creating an unnaturally tiny waist, corsets created the illusion of an exaggerated hourglass shape, crushing bones and squeezing the air out of the wearer’s lungs, all for the sake of appearing “presentable” in public. (If you made it 30 minutes into Pirates of the Caribbean, you also witnessed Swann fainting as a result of that aforementioned corset.)

It’s safe to say that our collective society has progressed considerably since the era that produced the original corset. Why, then, did we decide to reach back in time and inform our fashion with the same structured bodices? I think when worn in 2018, the corset actually subverts its original exploitation of the female figure. So you’re wearing a waist-cinching belt over your blazer? That’s actually a power move, as this choice was made outside of pressure or obligation to uphold any standards set forth before you.

The bottom line is this: When you put on any garment and you choose to dress for yourself and only yourself, you are owning your power. If you are getting dressed with others in mind or forming yourself to a certain standard you’ve identified as necessary to adhere to, you’re inherently giving up that power. So let’s all stand behind our clothing choices fearlessly and without apology, shall we? This year more than ever, clothing can be political.

To preface, Tibi is hands down one of my favorite brands, so you can imagine how excited I was to see what it came up with for its F/W 18 collection. Typically, I, as do many others, turn to Tibi for fresh styling techniques, unique color palettes, and shoes worth saving up for. Guess what? The fall collection delivered all of that and then some. Here's my personal diary from the show in case you want to feel like you were there too:

The room quiets down as the show is about to begin and what starts playing other than a remix of one of my favorite songs ever—"Futile Devices" by Sufjan Stevens. Color me absolutely stoked. The first look is a modern tan-colored suit with utility-inspired detailing, a neon orange sweater, and white wide-ankle bucket boots. So Tibi. The rest of the models start parading out as my mind was racing to take mental notes of every possible detail. 

Between the bold hues, incredible suiting, the shoes none of us should be living without, and the overall urban-inspired theme, there was a lot to take in at this show, so I've broken it down according to the five key takeaways you should know about.

White Boots—Still a Thing

White boots are a shoe trend that has been lingering around for quite some time, and according to Tibi, the trend isn't going anywhere. Tibi sent out white boots of all kinds ranging from lace-up to mid-calf bucket to slightly slouchy. Don't worry—we're just as relieved as you are that this trend is here to stay.

Neon Pops

One detail that really stood out to me throughout the collection was the incorporation of neon. We saw tons of highlighter bright sweaters, graffiti-inspired detailing, and belt buckles and spontaneous stitching adorned with these color pops. The hues felt fresh and surprisingly accessible, thanks to the approachable styling.

Technicolor Dream Combos

Color, color, and more color was all people could talk about leaving the show. Well, that and how good the shoes were. Wildly bold color combinations flooded the catwalk, creating a Tibi rainbow world we could only dream of living in. See for yourself below.

Sweater-Scarf Hair Tuck

Hair tuck, turtle-lob, whatever you want to call it—Tibi showed us how to rock the niche fashion-girl hairstyle come fall 2018, and it involves a surprising accessory. Models stomped out wearing sweater-scarf hybrids wrapped around their necks with their hair effortlessly tucked in, creating that infamous look sartorial stalkers know and weirdly love. I don't know about you, but both of the girls below are currently filed under "fall 2018 goals."

Fresh Suiting

We all know Tibi does a great suit, but this season was particularly exceptional as the coloring, styling, and new details set these tailored duos apart from seasons past. One of our personal favorite additions? The utility belt in the last image.

In my humble opinion, there are few shopping-related occurrences quite as delightful as when Tibi drops a new collection. It's one of the few brands whose designs I'd gladly wear. Last night, Billboard presented its annual dinner and award gala, co-hosted by American Express. This was the first time the magazine held the event in Los Angeles, and it was a star-studded evening consisting of a red carpet; a cocktail reception; a seated dinner and awards presentation; as well as live performances by Camila Cabello, Kelly Clarkson, and more.

The annual event recognizes "some of the most talented, influential and successful female artists in the music industry, while also recognizing the most powerful female executives in the business," per the press release. And among those honored last night was Selena Gomez, who has been named Billboard's Woman of the Year.

Gomez thanked her BFF and kidney transplant donor, Francia Raisa, during her heartfelt acceptance speech. "I think Francia should be getting this award," the singer shared. "She saved my life. … I feel incredibly lucky." Prior to the ceremony, the two shared a sweet hug in front of the red carpet cameras.

Others honored at the annual event were Solange, who won the American Express Impact Award, Camila Cabello, who was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and Mary J. Blige, who took home the Icon Award.

We all know the feeling: You walk out the door for a day on the go, only to find 20 minutes later that your choice of footwear just isn't going to cut it in the comfort department. Unfortunately, the pain and blisters aren't the only downsides to wearing uncomfortable shoes—there's the chance they could cause more long-lasting damage to your feet. To help you prevent this, we reached out to an expert to find out which shoes are the worst for foot health.

Frankly, we expected high heels to top the list, but podiatrist Robert Khorramian, MD provided a surprising response to our question. The worst offender? Ballet flats. Dr. Khorramian pointed out that with women's busy schedules, unstructured flats don't offer enough support. He noted that walking for long periods of time in ballet flats "causes metatarsalgia neuroma and plantar fasciitis," and also "destroys the fatty tissue underneath the feet," resulting in the ever so dreaded corns and calluses.

While Dr. Khorramian named ballet flats as the most common shoes to cause foot-related issues, he explained that other unsupportive or painful styles are also worth avoiding. "Flip-flops can cause a lot of injuries," he stated. "Pointy shoes can also cause corns and blisters because of the lack of circulation to the toes."

Some of the most unsupportive shoes for your feet include classic ballet flats, flip-flops, pointed shoes, and precarious heels. So what are the best ways to protect your feet? "Always buy shoes that are cushiony underneath the soles of the feet and have enough toe room," said Khorramian. And if you are planning to wear shoes with little support or high heels, he recommends carrying a larger bag where you can easily swap to comfortable shoes. "If you must wear heels, avoid wearing them while you’re driving, for long periods of time, and while walking."

"Because I work in a creative industry, dressing for the office is slightly more understated and pared back. There are very few 'rules' as to what I can wear to work. I'll most likely pair it with a vintage tee and sharp blazer, paying homage to the original power-dressing staple. I like to add the unexpected to whatever I'm wearing, something that makes a look 100% mine. It can be something as simple as mismatching my personal jewelry or adding a masculine watch to an otherwise feminine look. I am fortunate enough to be able to wear denim to work, so I always make sure to incorporate one element that elevates my outfit.
