Well, two months after her last Instagram post, the new mom finally granted our wishes and took to the social media platform to share some news. The most apt description of Daily Drills and the brand's overnight fame can be boiled down to a video link we sent to the team's publicist with the message "Oh my god??" In it, a band of 20-somethings documents their journey of waking up at 4 a.m. and waiting in line in anticipation of Daily Drills' pop-up at La La Land Kind Cafe in Dallas, Texas, along with at least 60 other young women who were up before dawn and hoping to snag a sweatshirt. Although co-founders Kennedy Crichlow and Mary Ralph Lawson couldn't have imagined it when they first started the line in 2020, it's now become the norm for the beloved internet brand.

Enter Daily Drills, one of the direct-to-consumer activewear and loungewear brands to pop up during the pandemic. Unlike many of them, though, Daily Drills is still massively successful beyond the era of whipped coffee and dyed sweatshirts. Crichlow, Lawson, and their devoted fan base have shed their sweat suits in favor of a chicer, more elevated take on a lifestyle and resort brand. There have been pop-ups in New York and Dallas, and judging by the brand's online success, there are plenty more to come. Plus, the drop-based model that inevitably sells out leads to customers wanting more and more.

"We believe there is room for every lifestyle brand when you stay true to yourself," Lawson and Crichlow tell Who What Wear. "Sure, there are plenty of lifestyle brands out there, but there is only one of us."

It's hard to miss. We've in the midst of a sweat suit boom for a while, with every celebrity, influencer, and cool girl attempting to make their online audience convert into monetary sales, but there's something different about the women behind Daily Drills. They're both fashion-industry and social-marketing vets with a self-funded mission that feels more akin to entrepreneurship than an opportunity to capitalize off of a TikTok algorithm. Frankly, they know it too: "As long as we focus on our own styles versus just chasing the next trend that the rest of the fashion industry is following, there's space for us all."

You two were friends long before you began the brand—we'd love to hear the story of how you two first met and what pain points you had that led you to start Daily Drills.

We first met while contributing to a shared fashion IG account. Each girl who was a part of the account posted on a different day of the week. When we finally met IRL while we were both in L.A. for college (Ken at Loyola Marymount and Ralph at Pepperdine), we became fast friends.

We were feeling uninspired by our careers and closets, so when the world shut down during the pandemic, we had a chance to reflect on our lives and decided to take the leap and start Daily Drills. Everyone strongly encouraged us not to mix business and friendship, but we both have different strengths and interests, which make us work so well as a team. We have definitely found our groove. It's been one of the great joys in our lives!

Daily Drills has such a large, dedicated fan base. What does engaging with your audience mean to you, and how do your customers inform your drops? Have you figured out why they keep on coming back?

Our customers mean everything to us because they are our community! Although we haven't fully cracked the code yet and are always looking for new ways to engage with them, we are so grateful and honored by their dedication and are constantly inspired by their comments on our social media. We're in our DMs every day chatting with them in real time, and we love that they are never afraid to tell us what they want. We like to keep the line of communication as open as possible so that we are truly bringing our audience in—whether that be through in-person pop-ups, community events, online master classes, or sorority chats. We want there to be an open-door policy.

We also travel to the places our customers love to vacation and want to vacation in and share behind-the-scenes content and travel guides along the way. For example, everyone who vacations in Aspen was super excited to shop the recent Aspen collection because it feels personal to them!

We'd love to hear more about the business model in approaching your collections like limited-edition, one-time drops. What was the decision going into that? Do you think that's led to the buzz around the brand?

We didn't anticipate being a drop-based business! On the first drop, we couldn't afford a large amount of inventory, and when it sold out, we were shocked. We immediately reinvested the profits into more inventory, and then that sold out again. Naturally, that created a pretty high demand, and the buzz just spiraled from there. We're constantly trying to keep up with the demand, but so far, it's been so fun releasing collections with new designs and themes biweekly so that our customer always has something fresh to look forward to!

There are so many lifestyle, resortwear, and loungewear brands hoping to get a piece of the pie. Especially since the pandemic, DTC cozywear brands have exploded and become a big part of the fashion conversation. Where do you see the industry evolving from here in a post-pandemic world?

One of the only good things that has come out of the pandemic is making loungewear socially acceptable! Comfort has always been key when it comes to fashion, but now, it's a priority, and we don't think that's going anywhere. We love finding ways to style our sweats up and have enjoyed expanding into resortwear that's a bit more elevated but still just as comfy.

People will only get more creative and more bold from here. The oversize look has really expanded from lounge to ready-to-wear—e.g., blazers, loose trousers, button-downs. We've even been seeing it in top-tier designers recently, like Miu Miu, who are leaning into the sporty-chic side of loungewear.

As female entrepreneurs, what advice would you give to your younger selves or other female founders who want to start their own companies and brands?

Starting is the hardest, most intimidating part! If we can do it, so can you! Don't be worried if your first product isn't your best. It's not supposed to be. Just keep ideating and working toward the bigger vision.

As I live in New York City, it can be hard to relax. I really don't like cold weather. For someone who is from Chicago, stayed on the East Coast for school, and now lives in New York City, I really didn’t plan that very well. This may be one of the reasons I have a beanstalk of a shoe rack stacked on top of my closet filled with pairs of shoes I have not touched in five seasons. It took going home for Thanksgiving and coming back to really look at my room with clear eyes and come to see that this is no way to live. And thus, spring cleaning commenced before the holidays. 

Throughout my cleaning process, I realized that the most important things are the basics. While I have glittery sneakers and funky, furry coats, I really only wear my closet staples: my favorite jeans, classic black leggings, a white tank top, and other solid pieces that make up my day-to-day wardrobe. And as much as I love an occasional pop of color or texture, it’s time to make room for my closet’s basics because those are the clothes that I actually live in.

The best part about these closet basics is that they can go with literally anything and be worn any which way. A simple leather jacket can drape over something as casual as a denim dress or be thrown over something as classy as a black LBD. And so I moved all of these staples to the front of my closet and moved my, say, less conventional pieces under my bed.

I am sick of being uncomfortable. My day-to-day outfits are always so structured. Whether it be skin-tight leather pants to work, a bodycon dress on a night out, or even just mid-rise jeans to go run errands, my body is being constantly squeezed by fabric and sometimes I just want to let everything loose.

I had just gotten home from a day at the office, when my roommate burst in through the front door. She said a quick hello to me and our dog and then made a beeline for her room. I'm pretty sure I've worn the same outfit for the past three days, and I'm not even kidding: a sherpa sweatshirt, Lululemon Wunder Under leggings, and fuzzy socks. On repeat.

No matter how much heat we blast in our apartment, I am always cold. I have a problem.

For the fashion set, the pandemic ushered in a bounty of new stylings and priorities. Among them were intentional shopping and the acceptance—no, the encouragement—of loungewear. With the rise of intentional shopping, we saw ourselves buying straight from small businesses, even if that meant shopping on social media or clothing-resale apps like Depop and especially if it meant purchasing made-to-order pieces in an effort to reduce our carbon footprints. So you could say Golden Girly, the made-to-order brand of customizable loungewear sets by Brooklynn McCray, is the quintessential pandemic fashion company—except for the fact that McCray started Golden Girly back in 2019. Did she know she was going to perfectly meet the market's demand in a matter of months? Of course not. (Remember how blissfully unaware most of us were of pandemics in 2019?) But McCray's had her hands full, filling orders for sweat sets in neutral hues, pretty pastels, and color-blocking brights. How beautiful it is to see the fruits of one young woman's dreams flourish right when we need joyful stories more than ever before.

McCray was just 21 years old when she started Golden Girly, responding to an urge to design her own clothes despite never having been taught how to professionally construct clothes. Using the plethora of how-to videos YouTube has to offer, McCray completely taught herself how to make these loungewear sets that are already making waves in the fashion world. In October, right when we all were in need of refreshing loungewear inspiration, none other than Gabrielle Union posted a video in which she coyly sips from a glass of white wine, throws her head back, and flashes the most dazzling smile, absolutely glowing in a green Golden Girly bra and shorts set. Orders picked up, Complex took notice, and McCray has been running in high gear ever since. I suspect she'll be outgrowing her Depop platform very soon. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your business?

My name is Brooklynn McCray. I'm 23 years old and was born and raised in Ohio. My business, Golden Girly, started on Depop, a clothing resale app, in 2019. After many trials and errors of finding a niche for my Depop shop, I finally landed on loungewear. This eventually grew into me creating my very own loungewear designs. To add my own creative touch, I began offering the option to allow my customers to choose their own colors and pieces to create their very own lounge set, which, luckily, my followers loved!

And if you had to sum up your business in five words or less?

Customizable luxury.

How did you get interested in designing clothes? Do you have formal training, or are you completely self-taught?

I’ve always been intrigued by the fashion world, and it has always been part of my life in some way. I have a modeling background, and I attended school for fashion merchandising, but I never entertained the design side of fashion until now. Everything I do now has been completely self-taught by watching many YouTube videos and through trial and error by experimenting.

What inspired you to start Golden Girly?

I love having full control of my day-to-day life and future, so being an entrepreneur was perfect for me. I came across Depop through my boyfriend, and he convinced me to open up my own shop. From there, it grew into what it is now.

It seems as though you launched your business right before the pandemic hit. How did social distancing and stay-at-home orders affect your business? Did it force you to change your expectations and process?

The pandemic had a huge effect on my business, given it was the perfect time for loungewear to thrive. I had already been selling my custom lounge sets before it started, so luckily, not much with the actual process has changed. Although, due to the increase in orders, I have had to learn to keep up with the growth of my business, which at times can be challenging.

What has been your proudest moment since launching Golden Girly?

Seeing actress Gabrielle Union wearing one of my sets and posting a video to Instagram was really exciting.

Was there a moment when you noticed your brand take off? Have you felt overwhelmed by the number of orders you've received, and if so, how do you manage that?

There were a couple of times when I saw a large boost in sales. One of which was during the BLM movement. There was a lot of support for Black-owned businesses, big and small. Another being through YouTuber Macy Eleni, who gave my shop a shout-out after purchasing a set.

I definitely felt overwhelmed, but I did and still have the support of my mom, Danielle McCray, who would come home from work and help me complete and send out orders, which helped tremendously. She is now a full-time member of Golden Girly and still helps me manage my business to this day.

How do you see customizable clothing fitting into the future of fashion?

I am providing a new and fun way to shop by allowing my customers to essentially design their clothing. This is also beneficial to those who are typically either too short or too tall for most clothing because each item is customized to their specific measurements. I eventually want to expand the depths to which my loungewear can be customized by and for the consumer to make their shopping experience even better.

We like to give a little Spotlight love to other brands. What are two to three of your favorite brands you like to support and why?

One of my current favorite brands is Skin Buttr, a Black female–owned skincare brand that has the best-smelling body scrubs that I love.

Another brand is Brandon Blackwood New York. I have yet to purchase one of his bags, but I love every single one, and they are definitely in my mental shopping cart.

When I first think of merch, I think of the T-shirts I'd see students wearing in high school featuring the cool band they saw at the local concert arena or the logo of the college they aspired to get into. To me, merch was something that told a little story about the person wearing it and it felt more personal than the other pieces of clothing one owned. While fashion merch has evolved a long way from then, making its way into more communities, subcultures, and aesthetics. The core of it is still there: the desire to wear and represent your favorite brand/organization/cause.

It seems to be a universal truth that anyone who wore a school uniform will find that, in later life, they are unable to wear anything that vaguely resembles said uniform—be it a particular colour, cut, or fabric.
