When it comes time to part ways with our cash for a new piece of clothing, it’s universally true that cost-per-wear is our primary consideration. But what about the environmental price we pay when we don’t factor in how the item's practices impact people and the planet? Certifications like B-Corp are crucial in helping guide consumers to what is truly sustainable. But how?

What Is B-Corp?

B-Corp is a for-profit organisation that originated in the U.S. in 2006. Over the past two decades, the company has served as a proverbial yardstick that measures a company's "entire social and environmental impact."

What Is a B-Corp Fashion Brand?

B-Corp fashion brands are independently substantiated and subject themselves to scrutiny to confirm they meet "high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability," says the organisation’s website. Analysing five areas across the business—including community, customers and environment—B-Corp fashion brands are appraised and measured to ensure they comply with ethical codes. This process is rigorous, involving assessment and regular review to guarantee all claims are credible. It’s not for the lazy—or for brands who can’t back up declarations of being "green" or "kind to the planet."

How Does a Brand Become B-Corp Certified?

To become a B-Corp fashion brand, labels will undergo a certification process that involves a review called the B Impact
Assessment. After reviewing areas like supply chains, carbon footprints and charitable giving amongst others, businesses will then be rated based on their responses. Only companies that achieve above 80 points on this scale will become B-Corp fashion brands.

Taking this step is proof that the brands (including those below) take their output and its outcomes seriously. These are brands that have duly documented how the business manages its supply chain, pays its workers and works towards mitigating land and life loss, in addition to meeting other benchmarks. B-Corp companies go beyond avoiding certain fabrics treated with toxic chemicals and often work to pioneer next-gen fibres. They’re actively playing a part in combating the textile waste crisis and providing solutions to what happens to clothes once we no longer want to wear them.

Discussing these concerns can sometimes feel like a heavy topic—the exact opposite effect of the serotonin boost you get when your latest purchase finally arrives in the post. But driving industry change, encouraging circularity and reducing climate impact is part and parcel of designing a gorgeous garment that you’ll (hopefully) cherish forever.

As a customer, you can also make a difference, and the simplest way to do so is by shopping less and shopping smarter. Drawing inspiration from the local surfing community, relaxed outlook and sweeping coastline of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Bassike (pronounced basic) is a B-Corp fashion brand that prioritises transparency and strong design above all else. This is a promise it has upheld since its inception in 2006, but in recent years, the brand has taken bold steps to become as low-impact and responsible as possible. For instance, it became certified carbon neutral in 2021, whilst in 2022 alone, the brand diverted 6228kg of excess cotton textile offcuts from landfills. As the spelling suggests, this brand is much more than basic.

Another Aussie brand (there's a bit of a theme here), Bondi Born brings the sandy inlet of one of the world’s most famous beaches and transports the relaxed shapes worn by its locals into effortless swimwear and apparel. The brand has already garnered endorsements from Beyoncé and Hailey Bieber for its premium quality and unmatched fit, but in 2021, the label became a B-Corp fashion brand and entrenched its commitment to premium craftspersonship and sustainability. A certified B-Corp fashion brand since 2018, Veja uses advanced technology like materials made from recycled plastic bottles along with natural fibres like organic cotton to make its sleek shoes. Real Reformation fans will remember the brand's foray into swimwear back in 2019, but if you thought that small drop was good, prepare to be amazed by the full-fledged collection that arrived at both Ref and Shopbop this week. This time around, in addition to a larger selection of more elevated swimsuit styles—including both bikinis and maillots—the new swim curation from Reformation takes sustainability a step further.

Originally, the brand had made its swimwear out of Econyl, regenerated nylon made out of trash. But according to a press release, it wasn't sustainable enough for Reformation. So with this second chance, it's introduced a new, non-synthetic fabric called EVO by Fulgar, which is a renewable bio-based fiber that it used in conjunction with Econyl leftovers in order to combat waste.

In terms of aesthetics, Reformation went with an elegant, vintage look for its official swimwear debut, with a mix of solid colors, like Diana blue, burgundy, and olive green, and patterns, from polka dots to florals. There are high-waisted bottoms and skimpy, side-tie ones, and full-coverage one-pieces and cutout ones. Basically, the selection runs the gamut, but every suit has one thing in common: You'll want to buy it—immediately. With some styles already selling out on Reformation's website, I don't suggest dillydallying just because the weather isn't quite warm enough yet for a pool day.

I'm a huge advocate for shopping small and sustainable. What started as a way to curb rogue shopping habits turned into an inspiring process that completely transformed the way I view clothes. I wear a piece by the brand at least once a week, and can therefore attest to the premium quality.

Introducing Tote and Sans—one of the most chic footwear brands on the European market. It was a pleasure discovering the website and its suave footwear offerings. The brand was founded by visionaries (and powerhouse couple) Rebeca and Alberto, who channel their experience in art and design to envision shoes which are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Arkitaip was conceived from a loving story with the aim of creating conscious classics to withstand the test of time. Breathable fabrications, billowy styles and ethically sourced linen remain at the core of Arkitaip's DNA and each year we're treated to its intentional capsule collection.

Svelte shaping, bias cuts and lustrous fabrications are what you can expect to find at Worme. The brand's identity is steeped in the artistic legacy and buoyant energy of Cadaqués, Spain, where its founders Hannah and Melissa Collet reside.

Finding occasion wear by independent brands can often pose a challenge, which makes De La Vali highly valued. Many of its directional shapes are free-flowing and others are taught with generous swatches of fabric. Some of the styles are even polyester-free, which is extremely difficult with the technicalities of occasionwear.

Few brands have mastered the appeal of Black to Grey, which is why I vehemently champion this brand. It boasts many non-conforming, languid shapes, and the colour palette spans rich, nature-mimicking tones and muted hues with pops of colour thrown in.

Founder of her eponymous brand, Margaret Howell draws inspiration from menswear and the essence of clothing in its entirety. How it makes the wearer feel, structure and functional elements. All of those components combined makes each piece feel like a work of art.

Former Conde Nast Editor, Anita Patrickson, sought to create an intentional brand honing in on her South African roots. Starting with sandals, the brand has gone on to create an array of leather goods. Porto explores textures, movement and life's ever-changing nature in its styles, which is reminiscent of art. Its name derives from the Greek word "peiro", traverse, or to carry.

In addition to its impressive sustainability credentials (of which I could list for a while), it's becoming even sharper in direction since its debut. One of my favourite summer pieces is courtesy of Baukjen— a shrunken mini I frequently wear at the first glimpse of sunshine.

While I've never really been one for resolutions, this year I made two that I've been determined to stick to. One was to be more financially responsible and the other was to embrace more sustainable shopping habits. Luckily for me, secondhand marketplace Vinted exists, and it's proved to be the key to helping me keep both.

Yes, there's nothing quite like the rush of a new fashion purchase, but as we all know, everyone needs to do their part to help the planet, and fashion—particularly fast fashion—is one of the biggest polluting culprits. Making a reselling platform like Vinted part of your shopping habits can help on so many levels. You still get the thrill of a new purchase but with several added bonuses: you're paying a fraction of the original retail cost, potentially finding something that has sold out in stores, saving an item from going to landfill and opting out of the production-demand cycle by choosing not to buy something brand new. A few months ago, I discovered the other big perk of Vinted: selling. With the start of a new season you're likely feeling the urge to do a reset of your wardrobe and create space for some fresh finds. By selling on Vinted, you not only keep the pieces you no longer love out of landfill, but you also make money from them that you can use to buy items that do spark joy (or just use it for something else). Oh, how we love a circular fashion economy.

If you're planning on joining me in a sustainable fashion commitment, I've done some digging for expert advice on how to navigate Vinted like a pro. As well as Vinted's consumer lead Natacha Blanchard, I spoke to Manchester-based influencer Sophie Longmire—a longtime Vinted shopper who's bought some seriously enviable pieces from the site—and content creator and sustainable shopping advocate Bianca Foley. Here's what they had to share.

1. BE SPECIFIC WITH YOUR SEARCHES

Longmire's long skirt is another one of her many Vinted finds.

"Rather than typing 'mini skirt,' it's better to start an advanced search without keywords, and specify each category and sub-category, including the sizes that usually fit you, colours, the brands you want (if you already know), your price range and the desired condition. Then, you will have exactly the selection that matches your filters," says Blanchard. "And try varying the product name you’re searching for, as not everyone uses the same term."

Longmire adds that she's found a lot of success by focusing on searching for specific brands. "I find it easiest to navigate the app when the algorithm knows the brands I like, so I always search for brands I know and love, and most importantly, that I know my sizing in." The more you keep looking for these brands, the more likely it is your Vinted home screen will promote similar pieces to you.

Foley agrees, and says that "Be specific" is her number-one tip. "If you type in 'black dress,' for example, you will get a lot of results, so narrow it down by brand or style in order to limit the results and find what you really want," she says.

"If you’re a secondhand beginner, a great way to start is to look for accessories such as shoes, bags and jewellery, since size and fit will be easier to determine," says Blanchard. "Then, once you’ve seen how easy the process is, you can work your way up."

3. GO FOR BUNDLES

"Vinted allows shoppers to buy in 'bundles' (multiple items from one seller), and making use of this is another clever way to save money, since sellers are usually willing to offer further discounts for buying multiple items," says Blanchard. "It’s a handy feature for buyers as you can often find similar styles in your size without needing to start a new search. Plus, you can save on paying separate delivery charges, since everything can be shipped in one package—which is also better for the planet."

Foley also likes to shop bundles from one seller, and recommends hitting that follow button when you find an account you love. "Loads of your favourite content creators are now on Vinted, so why not buy their wardrobes? More often than not, they’re selling really good quality and hardly worn pieces for a fraction of the price," she says.

4. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK

One of the key things that sets Vinted apart from other secondhand marketplace platforms is the buyer-seller communication. "Don’t be afraid to message sellers for more information; perhaps you’d like to see the item in a better light, request measurements or want a close-up. Sellers are usually very keen to help," says Blanchard. It's particularly important to get in touch with the seller if you're buying a designer item. "Do ask for proof [that the item is genuine], such as a receipt or certificate of authenticity, and ask for photo close-ups of details such as the logo, stitching lines, hardware and label, to check that they are of high quality," she adds.

Foley suggests that before you commit to a purchase, "Ask specific questions, check the listings thoroughly and even request more photos if you need to," she says. "And if you’re buying an item for £10 that is worth much more, you will have to expect that it’s not [going to be] perfect!" You also shouldn't shy away from haggling—there's a reason there's a very prominent "Make an offer" button. Blanchard recommends starting out by offering 10-20% off the listing price, but you may be able to get a bigger discount if the item has been listed for a long time, as the seller will likely be more motivated to get rid of it. "One of my favourite finds is a Paloma Wool jumper," says Longmire. "I got such a good deal because I sent an offer to the seller that they accepted, and now I wear it weekly."

5. GET SELLING

A long dress is such a versatile piece to see you through the seasons.

The mark of a true Vinted-er is being a seller as well as a buyer. "Last year I sold loads of my own clothes on Vinted," says Longmire. "Not only did it ensure that someone else gets wear and joy out of them, but it also gave me the funds to get new secondhand things to make up my full holiday wardrobe."

If you decide to give it a go, Blanchard stresses that it's important to set yourself up for success. That means taking lots of high-quality photos, writing a great, detailed description and filling in all the relative categories such as size and condition. "If you need help pricing your item, a great place to start is to search for similar items and see the average selling price," she says. "You can then position yourself competitively depending on factors such as the brand and item condition." And if your item does have some flaws or signs of wear, don't try to pretend they're not there; it's better to show them and be upfront initially rather than deal with a disgruntled buyer and bad reviews later on.

For many people, candles are an integral part of their self-care ritual. Lighting a candle instantly transforms any space into a sanctuary—it’s a quick way to inject a room with ambiance. Though they may seem fairly innocuous, many candles may actually pose a major sustainability issue. Thanks to single-use or nonrecyclable vessels, unsustainable wax, and questionably sourced fragrances, that candle on your nightstand might actually be causing more harm than good. 

While most candlemaking brands are still far from becoming leaders in the sustainability space, some are emerging as trailblazers in creating better-for-the-Earth candles. Tata Harper’s latest collaboration with Nette was created by perfumers who specialize in green chemistry (they ensure that products are made responsibly using nonhazardous materials), and each box and label was made from recycled shoe boxes. The French fragrance house Carrière Frères has begun to offer refills made entirely from vegetable wax for its vessels, which are also compostable. New York–based Apollo Candles opts for man-made fragrance oils that are better for the environment. Even the luxe candle destination Diptyque now has vessels meant to be refilled. Keep reading for a deep dive into each brand and how they aim to make their candles better for the Earth.

Nette

Carol Han Pyle, founder of Nette, takes a realist approach to sustainability. "At the end of the day, the most sustainable thing to do would be to not make anything,” she says. "However, if you are going to make something, as we do, sustainability means making it in a way that offers a better alternative in your category so that you are helping the category—and the world—become more sustainable with every customer who chooses you over a less sustainable option.” She also emphasizes that sustainability means not putting out a product the world doesn’t have a need for and not being afraid to spend more money or put in more effort for a better product. 

That’s very apparent in Nette, the sustainable candle brand that clearly puts thought into every step of the manufacturing process. Nette only works with fragrance labs that have close relationships with farmers, so the brand is able to trace all of its ingredients. It opts for artisanal, handmade vessels that are food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe, with the idea being that you can turn them into mugs or drinking cups. The rest of its packaging is just as intentional. Nette’s paper is FSC certified, and its cello wrap is made out of corn.

At the end of the day, Nette makes candles that you’ll keep some iteration of for years to come. "Why not create something that people would never want to get rid of in the first place?” says Han Pyle. "Making them food-safe was really important because people have collections of coffee mugs and drinking cups—you can never have too many! If vessels aren’t food-safe, which the vast majority of candle vessels aren’t because of spray paint, how many scrunchie holders could one person possibly need?”

Diptyque

The Parisian Maison Diptyque has long been the candle brand of choice for those in the know. You’d be hard-pressed to find a fashion person without a Baies Candle somewhere in their apartment. While Diptyque vessels have become a décor piece for many (even Carrie Bradshaw used them as storage containers in her apartment in And Just Like That…), they’ve never technically been reusable—until now, that is. 

Diptyque’s latest addition, Les Mondes de Diptyque, marks a new beginning for the brand in the candle space. "The essence of a sustainable Diptyque candle is a testament to the sacred balance between tradition and innovation,” says Laurence Semichon, Diptyque’s senior vice president of brand. "It’s about offering a lasting experience, both in terms of olfactory delight and a visual masterpiece. For example, [in the] Les Mondes de Diptyque collection, the candles aren’t just a one-time wonder. They are designed to be refilled, ensuring that the splendid glass monoliths grace your space for years to come, reducing waste and embracing the idea of timeless luxury.” Diptyque also prioritizes high-quality, sustainable raw materials in its candle production. 

For Diptyque, the journey to sustainability is just beginning. According to Semichon, the brand is committed to creating more sustainable products in the future by seeking creative solutions to reduce waste, boost product longevity, and design lasting, beautiful, and thoughtfully sourced products that consumers will want to keep.

Carrière Frères

One look at Carrière Frères's luxe vessels will have you convinced: These candles are the lap of luxury. The French candle brand is made in Normandy and aims to reconnect us to the candles used as table decorations at the beginning of the 20th century. Carrière Frères is also unapologetically working toward the most sustainable candles possible. "From my point of view, sustainability is not a term describing a fixed or even an ideal situation,” says Julien Pruvost, creative director at Carrière Frères. For Pruvost, sustainability is never complete—it will always be a work in progress. 

In the meantime, however, the brand is taking it one step at a time. Carrière Frères conducted an internal carbon footprint study, and the results were surprising: Its worst offender was transportation. After that, the brand chose to focus on finding ingredients from closer sources. "We decided to set part of the focus on the materials the candles are made from—100% vegetable wax with 60% of it coming from Western Europe and from an organic source because, beyond the carbon footprint, you also have the biodiversity footprint,” says Pruvost. The brand also has refillable vessels made from recycled glass. 

It’s been a learning experience for Pruvost, and he’s taken some major lessons from working to make Carrière Frères as sustainable as possible. For brands hoping to follow his lead, he has some advice. "Stop all airfreight immediately,” he says. "Literally hunt down all unnecessary plastics from products all the way down to master packing and logistics. Switch all nonrecycled components to recycled components. Drop paraffin entirely. Think refillable or reusable.”

Apollo Candles

Apollo Candles offers the best of everything: gorgeous crystal packaging, fragrances that transport you straight to Italy, and eco-friendly packaging and ingredients. It’s clear from the first moment you see them that these candles are elevated and intentional, and according to founder James Napoli, it’s no accident. "I realized that many of my favorite candles were made with paraffin wax, which is a by-product of the petroleum industry,” he says. "I knew there had to be a better way of producing luxury candles in a more sustainable way, so I leaned into [my] family heritage of candlemaking to develop a product that would make it easy for consumers to upcycle.”

Napoli has clearly succeeded in Apollo Candles. Each candle is made using coconut wax, which is easier on the environment than other alternatives like paraffin wax or soy wax. The vessels are made of Riedel crystal to be reused, and the brand even opts for soy-based ink and paper made from sugarcane for its packaging. Each scent comes from a blend of natural and man-made fragrance oil. "We made this decision after countless hours of research and determining that there is less impact to the environment following a man-made approach,” says Napoli. "It takes a vast amount of farming to produce even a single milliliter of fragrance. Jasmine absolute oil requires something like 8000 tiny jasmine flowers per milliliter, where its molecules can be recreated by man with significantly fewer raw materials.”

For Napoli, every decision he makes goes toward supporting his larger brand vision for a more sustainable and less toxic future. "For me, sustainability is about striving for equilibrium with the environment and reducing the negative impact we have on it,” he says. 

September always inspires a new-year feeling that I owe to the school term—when the fantasy of summer starts to dwindle and a new phase commences. But if we’re really lucky, we’re dealt a few balmy days before landing feet first on crisp leaves, Halloween paraphernalia and pumpkin-spiced lattes. Given the weather this summer, we’re already in autumn mode, so there’s been an early shift in fashion offerings of late, and things are noticeably more autumn-forward than usual at this time of year. I’m a summer girl, so I'm still embracing being on the periphery of no-tights weather, even if I have to don my trench coat earlier than usual.

Let's play a little numbers game; how much more clothing do you think the average person owns now compared to 15 years ago? Five percent? Twenty-five? Sixty percent? Hate to break it to you, but it's the latter. We're not only buying more clothing than previous generations, but we're wearing it less too. It's a terrifying thought, especially considering fast fashion's negative impacts on the world. From contributing the highest carbon emissions globally to causing micro-plastic pollution in the ocean, the effects are endless.

I think about it often, especially as someone in the industry's trenches who has to grapple with the knowledge of this impact while also deeply loving fashion. I can't say I possess some moral high ground, but I will say I've made subtle shifts to be more sustainably minded in my own life. Part of that shift has come from prioritizing investing in staples and shopping from eco-friendly brands, but the other half has come from using the designer clothing rental service, Rent The Runway. 

Since the start of the year, I've been using the clothing rental service to curb my spending and lessen my environmental impact. And while it's not necessarily a solution to the larger issues that plague the industry—I'm one person, after all! Nevertheless, Rent the Runway has changed how we view fashion by destigmatizing second-hand clothing and creating a subculture that rewards re-wearing garments. It's changing both the industry and individual closets, and to prove that point, I did an in-depth review of the clothing rental service.

In the first half of this story, you'll hear from Sarah Tam, Rent the Runway's chief merchant, about how the service works, her tips for renting clothing, and how the team has expanded its merchandising to include some of the coolest labels. In the latter half of the story, I've included a run-down of 10 looks I tried on from the service, the pros and cons of the platform, and my full review of the service overall. About Rent The Runway

How did you decide you wanted to pursue a career in fashion? 

I always had an interest in fashion. Growing up, I obsessively read every single issue of Vogue. I followed that interest throughout college by applying to internships in the industry, looking for anything that would expose me to the world of retail and fashion. My first internship was at Saks Fifth Avenue, which was a dream. I worked in the store and got to observe the trend lifecycle from the ground up, seeing how customers react to merchandising and trends in real time. I knew I wanted to be part of that process, and I actually ended up working at Saks for nearly 20 years post-grad across the buying and planning teams.

What led you to your role as Chief Merchant at Rent The Runway? 

I was connected to Jenn Hyman, Rent the Runway’s co-founder, through one of my mentors. She was active in the planning stages for what is now RTR’s subscription program and needed a partner to bring her idea for the Closet in the Cloud to life and define what that would mean for our merchandising strategy. I fell in love with her vision—I knew she was building something so innovative and unlike anything else in the industry that I wanted to be a part of, something that would benefit both designers and customers in a totally new way. I’ve been with the company now since 2015.

How would you describe Rent the Runway to those that have never used the platform? And what should people know about the service? 

Rent the Runway is the world’s first and largest designer rental platform—think of it like borrowing from your chicest friends’ closet! We started in 2009 with one-time occasion rentals, giving customers access to designer dresses for events and weddings. Over the years, we saw that customers were actually "hacking” our one-time rentals: they’d rent something lower formality for an event and then throw a blazer over it on a Monday to wear to an important meeting. So that informed the launch of our subscription business. 

What should people know about the rental service? 

We now have a completely customizable subscription offering with monthly plans ranging from 5, 10, to 20 items on rotation to serve our customers’ everyday needs. Today, we’re the only platform where you can rent items a-la-carte, subscribe to fashion monthly, and buy resale from our 700+ designer brands. Our Closet in the Cloud is constantly evolving. We have thousands of items for every occasion, from evening wear and accessories to ready-to-wear, workwear, denim, casual, maternity, outerwear, blouses, knitwear, loungewear, jewelry, handbags, activewear, skiwear, and more.

We’ve seen a slow shift towards eco-conscious within the fashion industry and among consumers—in what ways do you think Rent the Runway has contributed to this change? And how does the company continue to push for a more sustainable future? 

When Rent the Runway launched 10+ years ago, secondhand clothing was often considered taboo. Think about it this way; there was an actual "ick” factor to renting your clothes in 2009 when we launched. So we really spent the first decade of Rent the Runway convincing people about the merits of secondhand. Now, not only is wearing secondhand normal, it’s cool. Rent the Runway was one of the first brands to make secondhand aspirational. Our mission is to encourage access to fashion over excess. We’ve set out to fundamentally change how women utilize their closets by democratizing fashion access and asking them to buy less but wear even more through rental. 

While we’ve seen so many strides toward sustainability in the industry, there’s still a lot of stigma around clothing that’s not "new.” As a seasoned expert, what common misconceptions do you think should be debunked?

We’ve definitely made strides in reducing the stigma around rented or secondhand clothing, as evidenced by the demand we see now across the industry for pre-loved products. Our incredibly talented garment science program keeps our items in rentable condition for as long as possible. Thousands of items cycle through our two warehouses every single day. Upon return, our inventory is sorted into dozens of different cleaning methods, and 100% of those items are then passed through quality control, so we can deliver everything clean and ready to wear.

What do you think is the long-term effect of a platform like Rent The Runway on society’s relationship with shopping? 

We’re fundamentally changing our customers’ relationships with fashion. In fact, the vast majority of our customers say they buy less fast fashion since using Rent the Runway. While fast fashion continues to be pervasive in our industry, our goal is to provide value and variety in our customers’ wardrobes so they can still have fun with fashion but in a less wasteful way.

One thing that’s really leveled up the platform is the curation of brands available to rent now. There’s everything from Coperni to Tory Burch. How has your role directly contributed to expanding the brands available? And how does the team decide which brands or merch should be added to the platform? 

My team scours the market to unearth the best-emerging brands, and we ultimately decide which brands we’ll launch and grow every season. When we go to market, we’re looking for the trends that are percolating, the trends that are here to stay, and the trends we know our customers will be interested in. From there, we decide which brands fit into those buckets and curate our seasonal assortments. We’re also an incredibly data-driven team, so we always consider feedback from our customers to make these decisions. We look at what brands and styles they love, evaluate the feedback provided by our customers, and analyze "hearting” behavior as leading indicators to inform our buy. 

What are some of the benefits of choosing to rent clothing in your mind? 

Rental is an opportunity to have fun and experiment with fashion, so we look at this process through a totally different lens than traditional retailers. Our customers want to experiment and discover new designers and trends. We aim to provide them with access to pieces that evoke joy, confidence, and versatility so they can mix and match them with the wardrobe staples they already own.

Of the brands offered on the platform, are there any the merchandising team is super excited about right now? Alternatively, are there any brands that are the most-rented among users? 

We carry over 700 designers in our Closet in the Cloud and add more every single season. There are a few new designers to RTR this year that I’m really excited about. I love the sleek minimalism of By Malene Birger, the oversized tailoring of Anine Bing, and the directional take of Coperni—and our customers love them too! Some of our long-time customer favorite brands include labels like Veronica Beard, Ulla Johnson, A.L.C., Sandro, Vince, and Staud, so we’re always adding new pieces from those brands.

We’ve officially entered the time of year when people are traveling or attending weddings—are there any specific pieces you feel are a must-rent for the season?

There are a few must-rent summer essentials on our list this season...

Our first must-rent for the summer is matching sets. Sets are great for travel or vacation because you can wear them as one head-to-toe look or mix and match them with other items in your suitcase. Rent the Runway has a ton of versatile sets that will be on rotation all summer long.

With so many different pieces available for rental, do you have any hacks you would give newer users to navigate the service? Or tips for finding the best things? 

My first tip is to shift your thinking – renting is totally different than the shopping you’re used to. It’s about how you want to express yourself today versus what you want to own forever so that you can have more fun with it. On Rent the Runway, you’re able to "heart” items and sort them into shortlists (for work, weddings, etc.), and the more items you like, the more our algorithm can get to know you and make personalized recommendations. We have thousands of styles on site, so we really work to serve our customers a curated assortment based on what they love. Lastly, I highly recommend reading the reviews! The women on our platform share their height, weight, body type, and pictures of themselves to help others find the right fit. It’s hugely helpful when deciding what items you want to add to your shipment. 

Finally, from your perspective, what’s the most exciting thing about what the Rent the Runway team is doing right now? And what can we expect from the service in the future? 

This year we’re really taking our dream closet to the next level. We just introduced updated subscription plans that all come with an extra item at no extra cost, so our members are now receiving even more value than before and have more spots in their shipments to experiment with fashion. We’re also focused on making the services as seamless and delightful as possible by introducing features that make it easier to find the inventory you love on RTR. My Review of Rent The Runway

Ok, so you've made it this far in the story, and by now, you hopefully feel like you've got a great deal of information about how Rent the Runway works, some of the brands offered by the subscription service, and how it's changing how we view sustainable fashion. But you still might be thinking: Is it worth trying? And that, my dear friends, is where I come in to give you a full review of the service. 

For context, I've been using Rent the Runway since the beginning of the year. Before January, I had never used the service and admittedly wasn't keen on trying it because I had heard mixed reviews. However, after continuously running into editors at events donning pieces from the platform, I began to warm up to the idea of clothing rental services. And once the fabulous Rent the Runway press team reached out, I knew I had to give it a trial run—spoiler: I'm so happy I did.

I've been smitten with the service that even after my trial, I've continued paying for it because it was a great way to test new trends, pull brands for quality checks, and dress up for events I have to attend as an editor. But if you're still on the fence about signing up for a clothing subscription service, you'll want to keep reading. Ahead, I'm sharing 10 looks from Rent the Runway that I wore over the past six months. I've broken down occasions you can rent clothing for, included my reviews for each piece I rented, and included some of the pros and cons of using the clothing rental service in general. WEAR: Thebe Magugu Keyhole Handkerchief Hem Dress 

My Review: Earlier in the year, I knew I would be traveling for CIFF and Copenhagen Fashion Week, so I knew I needed to pack outfits that were both fashion-forward but also equipped to handle the frigid Nordic winters. Rather than buying new looks, I decided to rent a few new items. Admittedly, I was worried I was putting too much faith in Rent the Runway to provide me with the perfect look for such a huge event. However, I found the offering they had mid-winter was great. In fact, I had been looking at buying this Thebe Magugu Keyhole Handkerchief Hem Dress for months, but because it's a small South African brand, it was already sold out at all my favorite retailers, but just so happened to be available to rent!

I was so excited to get to try this piece out before potentially buying it, and honestly, it was a huge pro for me that Rent the Runway allows you to do just that. I got it in a size medium and found it fit so well. Despite being a knit material, it was clear that the garment was well-maintained throughout the rental process as it didn't lose any of its form. In fact, after wearing it to an evening show at CPHFW, I decided I couldn't live without this dress, so I ended up buying it at a discounted rate. For only being my first look, the experience was shaping up well already.

My Review: For the second look that I tried (and loved) from Rent the Runway, I landed on this knitted Rixo Teresa Dress. It was another piece I rented for my trip to Copenhagen. Packing, in general, is a hassle, but even more so when you know you're going to an ultra-cold climate and will likely be walking around the city to get from one fashion show to the next, all while trying to look chic. Luckily this dress was up for the task. Since I was planning outfits on the fly, I had to order this Rixo dress in size small (I wear a medium) as it was the only one available at the time— a downside to Rent the Runway is that sometimes stock is limited, so you have to take a risk with sizing.

But the package came faster than I anticipated, and the sizing worked out as the dress silhouette was roomy enough to layer Uniqlo HeatTech garments underneath. Of everything I wore on my trip, this dress was by far my favorite; it was not only super-comfortable and ultra-flattering, but it even caught the attention of street-style photographers! Being able to rent this dress not only saved me in a crunch when I was trying to figure out what to pack, but it gave me a chance to try out Rixo's iconic dresses for myself—let's say I'm a part of the fan girl club now.

My Review: Once I returned from Copenhagen, I had to turn back around and start planning outfits for New York Fashion Week. I think the rental service shines when you've got a calendar filled with events because it makes getting the perfect outfit a breeze. The only thing I found difficult in the swapping process wasn't the actual logistical shipping (you can drop it off at a local UPS or arrange for pickup) but rather choosing what to rent next. There's so much inventory on Rent the Runway that it can sometimes be overwhelming. But I quickly learned to sort things out by searching for my favorite brands and turning to their curations. The latter option led me to discover (and rent) this Marina Moscone Collective Red Fringe dress. I loved that I stumbled upon this knitted frock because of the site's curation of rising brands—it added an element of serendipity that sometimes feels lost on other retailers. 

In terms of the dress itself, I tried it in a medium—the size fit perfectly. I ended up pairing it with knee-high boots, a leather trench, and my beloved Themoirè clutch bag for fashion week. With this piece, I felt like I got to experience Rent the Runway's merchandising team's push to bring cooler brands onto the platform while also being able to experience first-hand what it would be like to incorporate it into my closet.

WEAR: Sandy Liang Alper Skirt

My Review: Unless you're shopping in person or have shopped directly from a brand before, it can be hard to figure out your sizing—which was the case for me with Sandy Liang's clothing. I've loved the brand for a while but had not had the chance to try out any of the pieces until my Rent The Runway trial. One of the benefits I learned first-hand from trying brands through a rental service is it allows you to test out the sizing from the comfort of your own home, and you get to try pieces you may not have immediately gravitated towards buying. Or at least, that was the case for me with this Sandy Liang Alper Skirt. At first, I had ordered a Sandy Liang dress that was too small for me, so I swapped it for this skirt (in size 8). I found the fact I could easily swap things out if they didn't fit a super-comforting part of the process. 

It also allowed me to branch out a bit. For example, I didn't expect to love this skirt so much. But I found that it was one of the first Items I rented from the platform that I styled for a special event (in my case, it was for New York Fashion Week) and wound up re-wearing it multiple times. I held onto it for a few months—a great bonus of the platform—until I finally caved and decided to buy it to make it a part of my forever wardrobe. I don't think I would have ever thought to buy this skirt before having the chance to rent it, but now I can't imagine not having it in my life.

WEAR: Thebe Magugu Sisterhood Bandana Skirt

My Review: Once I fell in love with the Sandy Liang skirt, it fully clicked for me that the platform was a great way to explore new brands, trends, and even the boundaries of your style without having the incur high costs to your checking account or the environment. So I began to choose pieces I thought would make great long-term additions to my closet—like this Thebe Magugu Sisterhood Bandana Skirt. I'm a sucker for a good skirt, and since I had already rented (and ended up purchasing) another Thebe Magugu piece from Rent the Runway, I figured I'd give this piece a whirl.

Based on availability, the skirt was only available to rent in a large (again, I typically wear a medium), so the waistband was a bit bigger than I would have liked. Still, the skirt was stunning. I styled it with a thick Uniqlo turtleneck, an Aritzia leather jacket, and knee-high boots from Staud to compensate for the fit. It allowed me to get some wear out of the skirt while also being perfect for transitional weather in the city. It also made me realize that renting through the service allowed me to try it and send it back without the hassle of dealing with final sales return policies or exchanges, so that's a win in my books!

My Review: Not to sound like a broken record, but I came to love that my Rent the Runway subscription allowed me to try brands or pieces I had been converting forever without committing fully. For example, I had been considering buying this ASTR Miranda Dress after spotting it on Shopbop, but instead, I chose to rent it—honestly, great call on my end. I ordered the piece in a size medium, and the fit was incredible and super-flattering. But honestly, I wasn't as obsessed with it as I was with other pieces I tried through the service.

As an editor and general fashion enthusiast, it can get easy to get swept up in trends or an idea about a particular piece of clothing only to realize that when you own said thing, it doesn't actually speak to your soul. Something which was very much the case for me with this dress. It's ideal for renting if you want something that will transition from day to evening earlier—the cutout details and faux leather fabrication are just spicy enough. But I found that I was okay with knowing I got to wear it once and swap it out, hoping to find another piece that might spark a bit more joy.

My Review: Through my experience of using Rent the Runway, I realized that finding great pieces on the platform requires a level of curiosity. You have to be willing to try new brands or silhouettes that you haven't before, and you have to be okay with the fact that some items will flop (maybe they won't fit or aren't as exciting as you anticipated) while others will change your entire life. With this Marina Moscone Sarong Dress and Little Liffner Blue MacCheroni Mini Bag, it was the latter experience.

I have been obsessed with Marina Moscone for a while, so I freaked out when I realized the rental service stock-listed the brand. It was hard to choose what piece I wanted to rent, but I landed on this black sarong dress as it felt like the perfect piece to wear to the office or a more casual cocktail event. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you I have never loved a dress more than when I put this one on. It's so flattering because of the draping around the shoulders and drop-waist detail. I low-key cried when I had to ship it back, so it's safe to say I will buy it shortly. 

I might have messed around by not buying the Marina Moscone dress immediately, but when it came to the Little Liffner Blue MacCheroni Mini Bag, I didn't play. I was dubious about the quality of bags on Rent the Runway, but I had wanted to test out a bag from the contemporary label Little Liffner, so it was a no-brainer to rent this little baguette. Any previous skepticism I may have had melted once I got my hands on this bag. First, it's so well-made—the lizard embossed leather is so luxurious, the color is divine, and the hardware is so elegant. Secondly, the shape is compact, so it transitions from day to night with ease. Plus, it fits comfortably over the shoulder. I was so impressed that I ended up buying the bag, which is a huge deal since I'm so picky about purses. Let's say I'm fully convinced that Rent the Runway's bag offering is top-tier.

My Review: Besides their accessory and formal-wear offerings, one thing I learned about Rent the Runway is that their workwear pieces are just as solid. While there's an endless array of work staples you can rent, with summer in full swing, I knew I wanted to rent a modest dress that could be worn to the office but still packed a punch. I landed on renting this multi-color Bibhu Mohapatra Collective Purple Pleated Panel Dress in size 6. What's great about this dress is that with the right styling, it can be worn to just about any setting—work, weddings, baby showers, vacations, and so on.

I landed on wearing it to the office on a balmy summer day and styled it with simple sandals, Jenny Bird bangles, and a sculptural clutch bag from Published By. While the versatility of this dress is a great selling point, it's the details that did it for me. Everything about this dress is sublime, from the high neckline that makes it work apropos to the subtle nipped-in waist (that's ultra-comfy) to the asymmetrical hemline to the colorful pleats. The fact I could even rent a dress this well-made solidified me as a Rent the Runway stan girl for life.

WEAR: Derek Lam Collective Pink One Shoulder Dress

My Review: As aforementioned, there are so many things you can find on Rent the Runway—staples, jewelry, bags, etc.—but after using the service for an extended period, I can safely say their dress offering can't be beaten. Need to go to a summer wedding? There's a dress for that. Are you going to a work conference? They've got something for that too. There are so many dresses that I can spend hours debating what to include in my new batch of shipments. Except for this Derek Lam Collective Pink One Shoulder Dress, which I decoded on sight, I had to rent it. 

What initially drew me to this dress is that it has a bunch of trends—i.e., bubble hemlines, drop waists, and bright pink—wrapped up into one single item. For me, it was a prime example of being able to rent something trend-forward for brunch with the girlies or a baby shower without having to buy something new. And it ended up being just as great as my expectations as it fits true-to-size (I tried a medium), was flattering on my body, and was easy to style.

WEAR: Tory Burch Variegated Stripe Poplin Dress 

My Review: One of the best things about Rent the Runway is that you can rent extravagant pieces for a special occasion or vacation. I knew my final look had to bring the drama—and boy, did this Tory Burch Variegated Stripe Poplin Dress do just that. As a die-hard stan for Tory Burch, I was in literal shambles when this dress was released as a part of its S/S 22 collection. So, you better believe that when I found this dress on Rent the Runway, I was obsessively stalking it until it was available to rent in my size.

The wait was well worth it, as I've never had a dress fit me off-the-rack as well as this one. I'm busty (I wear a 34DD bra), but the halter on this dress is super spacious, while the waistline is tapered in perfectly so that your waist looks snatched. And I would be remiss if I did not mention the pockets on this dress—which dart out to create the most striking silhouette! It's the best piece I had the privilege of trying from Rent the Runway and proved why this service is worth using.

I honestly would have never tried on this dress out of fear of falling in love with it and not being able to afford it, but Rent the Runway has given me a chance to try it out in a way that's a bit more attainable to my current budget. Of course, it's going to be heartwrenching to send it back, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. In the interim, I will re-wear it as much as possible and save up to buy it.

Closing thoughts: After using Rent the Runway for six months, I can safely say I became a stan for clothing subscriptions. Admittedly, it took me some time to ditch my preconceived notions that this service was purely for consumers looking to rent one-off pieces for special occasions, but once I got past that, I found joy in using the service. Even when you work in fashion, it isn't always an option to have access to designer labels or try designer pieces without strings attached. Rent the Runway makes that an option for everyone. And while, at first glance, the subscription pricing may seem steep compared to a quick purchase from an affordable retailer considering the value of items you can pull and the ability to return things makes it all worthwhile.

Renting clothing may not be for everyone, but if you're open to trying a subscription service, it will change the way you relate to buying clothing. The process is about shopping less and speaking from my own experience, I became a better consumer through this process. Because I could try pieces from luxury, contemporary, and affordable labels, I could learn further what works for my body, style, and budget. It's taught me how to be more intentional about what I buy, and while that doesn't mean I'm always spending less on individual items, it does mean I'm only buying things I know I'll wear.

I now ask myself: Would I re-rent this again? Can I live without it? Or does it need to be a part of my forever wardrobe? If the answer is yes, I know it is meant to be. But if not, I know I can save my money and return it to Rent the Runway sans guilt. And that, my friends, is how you save yourself time, cash, and the planet in the long term.

At the Who What Wear offices, it's no secret we're forever fans of Cartier. While the heritage luxury brand may be best known for its iconic watches and exquisite jewelry, it also has a long-standing track record of giving back. Notably, the Cartier Women's Initiative is a program that awards financial capital and business mentorship to entrepreneurs around the globe. The initiative celebrated its 16th award ceremony this spring, and we were lucky enough to get to travel to Paris to witness the event honoring the 2023 winners.

It was our third year getting to meet some of the award recipients, and each time, we were awestruck anew by the force of these women. One example is Charlot Magayi from Kenya. Magayi founded Mukuru Clean Stoves, a company selling clean, affordable cooking stoves. As an orphan who grew up in one of the biggest slums in Nairobi, she experienced firsthand the serious respiratory issues that can come from cooking over a flame daily. She set out to positively impact the health and financial well-being of underserved communities with her product, which has since reduced the household air pollution and household cooking costs of over a million people. Other businesses spanned sustainable agriculture, mental health, and education, but no matter the category, they all have a common thread of being a "force for good." That force is only increasing, with Cartier expanding to two new regional awards this year—Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa and Oceana—and adding a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion award, which is open to all genders.

Naturally, we were especially curious about the fellows whose businesses are in the fashion sector. Ahead are our interviews with SukkhaCitta, Cise, and Pantys, three brands that are bringing much-needed change to the fashion industry.

How did the idea of your business come about?

SukkhaCitta started with a simple question: What if your clothes can change lives? As a development economist, my work took me through villages across Indonesia. There, for the first time, I saw how our clothes are made by women, making fabrics with their hands. It was beautiful, yet I couldn't help but see their struggle. Without any access, most of them are trapped in poverty, unable to earn enough to care for their families. In fact, this is the reality of 98% of women who make our clothes. That was the moment I realized that behind what we wear are all these women who are kept small by the system and whose lives are impacted by our choices. What makes things worse is the industry also uses toxic dyes. Without us realizing, our colorful clothes are the second largest polluter of clean water, turning rivers the color of what's currently in season. This is the true cost of our clothes.

I started SukkhaCitta to connect consumers from all around the world with the full story of how and why something was made. We work with marginalized women in the global fashion industry who work in villages, connecting them with access to education, design, quality management, and natural dyeing. We have created a fully traceable farm-to-closet ecosystem, where you know exactly who made your clothes and what the impact is. … Through a simple choice of what we wear, we can change the lives of women while being part of the climate solution.

Can you share more about how your craft schools, fair wage standards, and sustainability efforts create ripples of impact that will create long-term change?

When you purchase a SukkhaCitta piece, the first thing you realize is that there are real lives impacted through your choice. The power of this idea is vast. You are not giving them aid; you are giving them a chance to earn a wage that allows them to support their families. The reason this is significant is that it allows these women to keep the one thing that is so often taken away from them: pride. When someone appreciates your work and you are able to make a living from it, your pride remains intact.

During one of our last field trips, I was surprised to see pieces of paper on the wall. Apparently, the women were brainstorming how they can improve the education of the children in their village through scholarships. I nearly broke into tears. I think this is the essence of empowerment—when they feel like they can change their own lives and are taking active steps to be agents of change in their own communities.

Do you get to hear stories or feedback from the Indonesian artisans you work with about how SukkhaCitta has impacted their lives?

Definitely, this really is the most fulfilling part of my job! This is Ibu Tur's story, one of our very first artisans who went from an apprentice in our craft school (Rumah SukkhaCitta) to completing her master artisan certification to now teaching the young generation to sustain our Indigenous crafts.

Do you have any advice for would-be social-impact entrepreneurs? Would you recommend pursuing grants like the CWI?

Believe in yourself. Along the journey, you will encounter so many who will laugh at your dreams, especially when you're trying to do something that was never done before [and] taking the path less taken, for when you pursue your purpose, you give permission to others to do the same.

My experience with the CWI has been nothing short of transformative, so I would definitely encourage everyone to apply! The fellowship taught me what I needed to scale our impact to the next level. And the community is so powerful. I feel so at home with these trailblazing women who are asking, "Why not?"

Being here today as one of the CWI fellows, I cannot help but to think of all the women who made this award possible. From the Ibus in villages across Indonesia, who led me to my life's purpose, to our customers, team members, and advocates all around the world. 

In Indonesian, there is a term called "gotong royong." It means working together to achieve something greater than what we individually can do. This recognition is proof that when one woman stands up for what she believes in, she can change the world.

What's your dream for SukkhaCitta?

My dream is to spark a movement that inspires communities to reconnect and to find ways to not only do less harm but to create positive impact.

Last year, we took it one step further by being the first certified B Corporation voted Best for the World in Indonesia and the first brand in the world to be certified Ethically Handcrafted by Nest. It's a huge deal in an industry plagued with exploitation and pollution, especially for women in the informal sector. In the next five years, you can expect us to do exactly what we've done so far: finding more problems and even better solutions and [giving] more than we take.

Your business evolved in the wake of George Floyd's murder. Can you share how that moment inspired a movement for Cise?

The murder of George Floyd was a profound moment that deeply impacted me and served as a catalyst for the transformation of Cise. Growing up, my family instilled in me the belief that there are countless ways to make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. Initially, I focused on helping those within my immediate network and supporting organizations that I was familiar with.

However, George Floyd's tragic death shook me to the core and made me realize that there were systemic issues far beyond my own sphere of influence that needed to be addressed. It was a wake-up call that compelled me to reassess my contributions and reevaluate how I could truly make a meaningful difference.

In that introspective process, I reflected on my core intentions and the broader goals I had set for myself. I recognized the need to expand my efforts and create a platform that not only supported the causes I cared about but also exemplified different ways to give back and uplift the Black community.

To begin this journey, I started with product development, collaborating with small businesses to offer unique and impactful solutions. As I witnessed the positive reception and impact of these collaborations, I saw the potential to extend my reach further. This led me to create clothing items for customers, with the proceeds being donated to organizations and initiatives focused on social justice and racial equality.

The experience of building this company inspired by George Floyd's murder has been transformative. It has shaped Cise into an organization that not only aims to drive change but also strives to amplify voices, support the Black community, and encourage others to take action.

Tell us more about Cise's sustainability efforts.

Cise is deeply committed to sustainability, and we have implemented various efforts to minimize our environmental impact and promote responsible practices throughout our supply chain. One key aspect of our sustainability efforts lies in the materials we use, such as utilizing recycled materials and exploring different fabric options that have a lower environmental impact. Additionally, we have taken steps to minimize waste in our operations. We have streamlined our packaging and labeling processes to eliminate unnecessary products that would contribute to landfill waste. 

Supply-chain transparency and responsible manufacturing are crucial to us. We establish personal relationships with our manufacturers to align them with our sustainability goals. Even during challenging times, such as the impact of COVID-19, we prioritize fair pricing and employee well-being without compromising our commitment to sustainability. When customers return items, we carefully assess their condition to determine the most appropriate course of action. If a product is still sellable but lacks its original packaging, we explore opportunities to repurpose it by collaborating with local artists, organizations, or other companies to breathe new life into these items, ensuring that they continue to serve a purpose.

This year, the Cartier Women's Initiative has added an award that is open to all genders. Can you share why you think this is an important step for the program?

As a member of the Cartier Women's Initiative community and a recipient of the first-place award, I am particularly grateful for the program's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I). The inclusion of an award open to all genders marks an important step toward creating a more inclusive entrepreneurial environment. I am honored and humbled to have been recognized and supported by the Cartier Women's Initiative, and winning first place further highlights the program's dedication to fostering diverse talent and driving positive change. This experience has reinforced the value of DE&I in entrepreneurship and serves as a powerful example for other initiatives, empowering individuals from all backgrounds to pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations.

What's your vision for the future of Cise?

Our vision for the future of Cise is to evolve into a leading mission-driven fashion brand and establish ourselves as a household name in the luxury space. Our focus will be on expanding our product offerings, with a strong emphasis on our mission and incorporating alternative materials and production methods. We aim to become a platform for collaboration and empowerment, working alongside local artists, artisans, and community organizations. Through all of these efforts, we aspire to inspire positive change in the fashion industry, demonstrating that style and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. 

Moving forward, we are committed to the continuous evolution of our mission. We seek innovative ways to contribute to a more equitable society, remain steadfast in our support for underrepresented communities, and advocate for social justice. The tragic event of George Floyd's murder served as a catalyst for our movement, propelling us to take bolder steps toward a more inclusive and just world.

How did you start Pantys?

We launched Pantys in 2017, and at that time, there were menstrual underwear brands in other markets, mostly focused on leakproof solutions in markets where the dominant preference for menstrual use is tampons, like the U.S., Australia, and parts of Europe. 

One big insight that we had in Latin America and Brazil specifically is that 90% of the market uses external pads or disposable pads, which is a huge number. Pads are the least comfortable and most wasteful solution for menstruation. It really inspired us to develop a liner technology that was much more absorbent—that wouldn't just be used as a backup to avoid leaks but would actually replace disposable pads.

We launched products that were much more absorbent but also comfortable and aesthetically beautiful. In Latin America, people really like having nice lingerie, and we knew that we couldn't just launch a brand that was focused on a functional solution. It had to be cool, and it had to be desirable to inspire that big change and shift, especially because a lot of consumers are concerned around functionality and hygiene.

What do you wish people knew about leakproof underwear in general and Pantys specifically?

I think for us the biggest challenge has always been that psychological barrier of switching menstrual products. Most of our first-time customers are purchasing because they want a solution that's more sustainable, and they want to stop using disposable products. But then they come back, and they purchase because the products are much more comfortable. They're seeing a huge quality-of-life difference in terms of how they relate to their bodies and menstrual cycle. It feels much more natural. They see that menstruation isn't dirty or waste from the body—it's a pure fluid. 

As menstrual underwear, you have to wash it, so you're even physically more in contact with your cycle. I think that has a huge emotional impact on our customers and helps normalize something that is very natural but for decades has been portrayed as something that is not normal, dirty, or even medical, as we saw with the blue liquid that we grew up watching on commercials.

How does Pantys differentiate itself from other leakproof-underwear brands?

I think we really focus on being best in class both in terms of health and sustainability. On the healthcare side, we are the first and only clinically approved menstrual underwear in the world. Today, menstrual underwear in every country is regulated as a paro-product, which doesn't have much regulation in terms of production and commercialization in the market. 

We went through the same processes of clinical studies that any pad or tampon or FDA-approved medical product would have to go through to meet the same level of standards. We did not only safety and functionality tests but also quality-of-life tests. We did those both in vivo and in vitro, so in lab settings but also with human trial participants. For example, 73% of our users say they forget they're on their period when they use our product, which is a huge quality-of-life impact. We saw a 100% reduction in self-disturbance. We saw reported increases in levels of productivity, comfort, and sense of hygiene. It's really exciting to see people make that switch and see the impact of that product in numbers.

I also think that because we have launched in a number of very fashionable retailers in Brazil, we have over 3000 points of sale there. But in Europe, we have a really broad portfolio of products that are really desirable and a brand that is desirable as well. For example, we launched the first leakproof nursing bra in the world. After underwear, we launched a teen line; a pharmacy line that is at a less expensive price point but uses the same technology; a maternity line with our leakproof, absorbent nursing bras; a fitness line; a swimwear line; [and] boxers for trans men who menstruate. 

We have this philosophy that co-creating with our community helps us to focus so that we're not innovating just to innovate. … We're innovating to really help solve a market need, and we're understanding those unmet needs in the market. As a natively digital brand, even if it's less than 1% of the market, if we're solving a real problem for them, we really focus on driving that quality-of-life difference and driving that value even if it's a niche consumer. So we are really dedicated to innovating with a focus on inclusivity, and that has enabled us to create an interesting and diverse portfolio that has also been a big differentiator for us.

How has being part of the Cartier Women's Initiative impacted your business?

The Cartier Women's Initiative program is so well structured, and there are so many different components to it, from the mentorship to award week to community with other fellows. For me, all of those have been incredibly valuable for the business and for me personally as a professional and for our team. I'm an engineer, and I've always been focused on building amazing product and experience and communication, but I'm not a natural salesperson, so it's been fun to work on building that muscle and better understanding the strategy behind sales. It was nice to have the resources from CWI to empower our team and engage them in our experience as well. We have really just started our journey with CWI, and I look forward to staying an active part of the community going forward.

What's next for Pantys?

We're always innovating on a number of different fronts. We have new lines of products that we're launching this year, which we're really excited about. In terms of commercial strategy, we're very focused on growing our digital and e-commerce sales. We also have new channels and partnerships that we will be launching in a few markets over the next few months, more on the B2B front, which is exciting. 

On the social- and environmental-impact front, we will be launching a platform that allows us to accept donations from companies and individuals to help donate reusable products to end menstrual poverty. We have a three-pillar approach for our projects focused on menstrual poverty: products, education, and policy. If you donate a pad, you give access for one month, but if you donate a reusable product, you give access for years. Right now, we have over 5000 girls and women on wait lists to receive products. While we are already donating part of our sales to help (we have donated more than $1 million in menstrual products), we wanted to find a way to accelerate that, so we're looking forward to doing that with this new platform. I also have a masters in public health, which has shaped a lot of our approach to take a stakeholder view of the market and recognize that as a multi-billion-dollar industry, it's also a human right. CWI has been a big highlight for us so far, and we're just thrilled that they will be together with us on this journey and help improve our impact.

Take a second and think about this: How do you define what's sustainable? If we're being honest, the collective definition has been watered down over the past few decades. What once was a call to action to combat the environmental impact of various sectors has been co-opted by corporations hoping to cash in on the "trendiness" of the social movement without making any fundamental changes. Sadly, that's an even more relevant phenomenon within the fashion industry. Clothing production accounts for 10% of all global carbon emissions, which is more than the sum of maritime shipping and international flights combined.

Yet more fashion brands than ever claim to be "vegan" or "eco-conscious" without actually having the receipts to back up their claims. Basically, there's a whole lot of greenwashing happening right now. And while we can't discount some of the genuine shifts happening—e.g., brands are addressing textile waste, and consumers are adopting a more minimalistic approach to their wardrobes—there's confusion surrounding what makes a brand actually sustainable.

Some of that confusion comes from a lack of transparency around how things are made, but it is also the myth of sustainable fashion. We'd all like to believe anything can be defined as "sustainable," but when over 100 billion garments are produced in a single year, being in the business of making anything new is unsustainable. But before you lose all hope, there are some sustainability-minded brands out there aiming to do better, for real.

By no means is any brand perfect, but with a focus on mitigating impact by minimizing water waste, opting for biodegradable fabrics, or investing back into the community, they are, in fact, better for the environment. So without further ado, here are 35 fashion brands that have adopted more sustainable production practices.

Filippa K F/W 23 collection.

Since its founding in 1993, Filippa K has become known for its minimal ready-to-wear collections with heavy Scandinavian influences. The brand has committed to working toward a 100% traceable and circular production model. And while it might not be there yet fully, it continues to prioritize sustainably sourced materials by participating in The Swedish Wool Initiative, using by-products from the meat industry that were going to waste to create textiles.

Not-so-fun fact for you: Denim production has the worst environmental and social impact of any item of clothing. Just producing a pair of jeans requires, on average, 2114 gallons of water, and that's not including the post-production impact of chemical dyes, textile waste, and microfibers polluting the ocean. All of this is to say denim is a dirty business, but DL1961 aims to change that. The brand centers sustainable practices in its denim by using post-consumer waste to create its yarn. Plus, it recycles 98% of all the water used in its production process to mitigate waste.

For shoppers looking for alternatives to leather handbags, the boom in vegan leather over the past few years was a welcome change. But many might now know that it's not necessarily the more sustainable alternative, as most vegan-leather fabrics are made from polyurethane aka plastic dipped with a crude oil finish. Before you freak out, there are some brands actually using sustainable materials to create stylish accessories—Themoiré is one of them. Founded in 2019, the label uses various unconventional biodegradable and recycled materials (e.g., cactus fiber, coconut skins, recycled apple peels, old fishing nets, and coffee grains) to create timeless shoes and bags.

While most may not think that jewelry has the same environmental impact as clothing, that's far from the truth. Mining for metals and gemstones has a negative social impact as well as an environmental one, making it all the more imperative to shop for brands that prioritize ethical production practices. Enter Agmes into the chat. Founded in 2016, the New York–based jewelry brand uses recycled metals for its pieces, recycles scrap metal for future jewelry, and produces all jewelry locally to minimize the footprint caused by overseas production.

Textile production alone is one of the biggest contributors to the fashion industry's carbon footprint, a fact that is not lost on the Australian co-founders of Faithfull the Brand, Sarah-Jane Abrahams and Helle Them-Enger. Since its inception in 2014, the brand has been committed to using textiles that are better for the environment. For example, its signature linen separates are made from traceable linen that follows the European Flax standard. Its breezy dresses and swimwear also use closed-loop fibers (yarn that comes from recycled materials and is reused), making them less harmful to the environment.

It's safe to assume that most define a fashion brand as sustainable through the lens of how it impacts the environment (which is valid), but that's only a percentage of the whole picture. The social impact is a pivotal part, too, which the London-based brand Ninety Percent has baked into its ethos. Founded in 2018, the ready-to-wear label has become known for its elegant staples that are made from renewable and organic materials. But what truly makes this brand stand out as a leader in ethical production is its commitment to donating 90% of its profits. To break it down for you, 80% of that chunk of income goes to charitable organizations, and 10% goes to profit sharing for employees in the office and the factories. The brand is proof that having a positive impact on the environment factors in everything from pollution to people.

Have you ever wondered what happens to clothing when you return it? Or how about clearance-section shoes that are never bought? Well, we hate to break it to you, but all that extra inventory most likely won't be donated or recycled. It will either be burned or end up in a landfill. If that idea is maddening to you, one of the best ways you can help prevent overproduction (besides buying less) is by shopping brands that operate on a made-to-order basis. One brand that does just that is Alohas. Founded in 2015, the label only produces its footwear and accessories from plant-based leathers and only puts them into production after you've ordered them so there's no product waste happening in the process.

Speaking of waste, it takes creative vision to see worn-down materials as something that can be recycled, but that's precisely what Szade does. Founded in 2020, the Melbourne-based sunglasses brand sources frames destined for landfills and recycles them to create new shades. What's more, that the entire line features genderless silhouettes all under $100, so they're genuinely accessible to every type of consumer.

Sweeping changes in the industry won't happen overnight. They occur in bite-sized bits. One brand that happens to be contributing to that shift is Bite Studios. Since its inception in 2016, the ready-to-wear label has taken a two-prong approach to sustainability by focusing on functionality and fabrications. Over 98% of all materials used in its collections are made from either organic or regenerated yarn. And the collections feature minimalist staples with sublime tailoring, making them the type of pieces you'd want to wear for a long time.

With the rise of faux eco-friendly leathers (looking at you, polyurethane), we've seen so much misinformation spread about the impact of leather goods. Of course, there are ethical considerations to buying leather for vegan shoppers, no doubt. Still, some brands are creating leather goods that have a positive impact. Behno is a prime example. Founded by Shivam Punjya in 2015, the luxury handbag brand has championed ethical practices in every part of its production cycle. It does so by addressing social impact issues (it offers a living wage and healthcare to its workers) and environmental ones too. The brand's leather tannery adheres to the gold standard set by the Leather Working Group, which is an organization that verifies that businesses are using sustainable practices in their production of leather goods (e.g., using chemical-free tanning and eliminating waste by using animal by-products). So even the biggest animal lovers can feel good about buying a Behno bag.

Ah, Reformation. You likely know the brand for its ultra-pretty floral dresses, but did you know it's leading the charge in redefining what transparency looks like? While most brands claim you can track their impact, you can't always pull the receipts—unless you're talking about Reformation. Transparency is a pivotal part of the brand. When you land on a product's page, it includes statistics about the garment's environmental footprint. But Reformation doesn't stop there. It also sends yearly reports on how it's aiming to minimize waste, the energy efficiencies it has adopted, and even what textiles dyes it's using to ensure they're not impacting the environment negatively. If that weren't enough to convince you, look to its continued partnership with the nonprofit Climate Neutral, which has verified the brand has had net-zero carbon emissions since 2015.

In the early '00s, sustainable fashion wasn't precisely categorized as high fashion. Most eco-friendly brands were producing pieces that felt downright granola (no offense). Being a stylish, sustainable brand was a bit of an oxymoron—until Nanushka came along. The brand was founded by Sandra Sándor in 2006, and the Budapest-based designer made sustainable fashion, well, fashionable. Of course, the brand focuses on reducing environmental impact by using recycled textiles. But beyond that, the brand's most accurate mark of sustainability is its ability to create pieces you'd actually want to wear for a lifetime. Its staples have a contemporary spin, which makes them a worthy long-term investment for any wardrobe.

Part of what's lost in faster clothing production models is the magic that comes from supporting an artisan who's spent years honing their craft. Luckily for us, though, some brands are dedicated to keeping that spark alive—case in point: Brother Vellies. Founded by Aurora James in 2013, the accessory label aims to champion a slower fair-wage production line by bringing artisan craftsmanship to the forefront. The brand partners with artisans across South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Ethiopia, and even New York City to create one-of-a-kind pieces you'll want to keep forever.

Owning multifunctional pieces is the secret to having a more sustainable wardrobe—no design duo understands that more deeply than Juliette Harkness and Emma Nelson. The two Australian-based founders launched Deiji Studios back in 2016 in order to create eco-friendly linen pieces that could be worn anywhere, anytime, all the time.

Just today alone, it's estimated that over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic are polluting our oceans. While larger solutions are a must to combat plastic production, some brands have taken it upon themselves to start helping with the clean-up, including Ookioh. Are you a fan of the television show Succession? Chances are you've already spotted a Hereu bag on-screen. But what you might not know at first sight is that this brand is arguably one of the best sustainable accessory labels in the game. Based out of Spain, the brand creates women's shoes and handbags from materials that are all by-products of the meat industry and are sourced in compliance with The Leather Group's ethical standards. On top of that, Hereu uses a network of small artisans to handmake each one of its pieces, making them far more sustainable.

If there's a case to be made about the power of adopting a slower approach to fashion, then it's going to be made by Caes. Since its inception in 2019, it has focused on creating less. The idea is that quality clothing over an excessive quantity is the key to truly being more sustainable, and frankly, we couldn't agree more.

A garment's wearability is the key to sustainability—or at least that's how the brand St. Agni sees it. The brand aims to promote slower consumption habits by offering seasonless pieces that are ultra-minimal and made from natural materials. What's more, the company works continuously to offset its impact by doing things like partnering with the organization Carbon Positive Australia to restore the landscape.

What happens when a former Jimmy Choo designer sets out to launch their own brand? You get the vegan footwear brand Piferi. After realizing there was a gap in the luxury market for fun shoes made from sustainable materials, Alfredo Piferi founded his namesake label in 2020. But what makes these shoes different (besides how incredibly stylish they are) is that they're made from BioVeg-certified bio-vegan nappa leather derived from corn. Talk about iconic footwear!

For a brand to truly use sustainable practices, it must always be centering ways to combat waste—whether from its own production or the world's growing pollution problems. No other brand does that more beautifully than CLED. Founded by Seulye Jo, the small jewelry brand upcycles discarded glass bottles to create unique gemstones. It's taking the motto of turning "trash into treasure" quite literally, and what's not to love about that?

Created in 2002, Mother of Pearl is a luxury ready-to-wear label that prioritizes sustainability. It does so by allowing users to click through the details of the entire production process for each piece and see what elements make the item sustainable. Plus, the brand only uses 100% natural fibers and ensures a code of ethics for all of its manufacturing centers.

You know those brands that just happen to tick all the boxes? Well, that's how we feel about Santos by Mónica. The ready-to-wear label is Latin owned, and it adheres to sustainable production practices. It does so by operating on a made-to-order basis, which ensures there's minimal waste. Plus, it uses natural textiles—such as cactus-derived leather for its handbags—to ensure that each piece has as little impact as possible.

If you've made it this far in the story, you know that textile waste is a massive problem in the fashion industry. But you might not know that there's one brand trying to help: Loti. Founded in 2021, the brand specializes in transforming deadstock fabrics (aka the scraps from other brands' clothing production) into ultra-pretty pieces.

One of the great things about the movement toward sustainability in fashion is that we've seen even larger brands commit to making massive changes—Everlane being one of them. While there's always more work to do, so far, the brand has been able to shift over 97% of its textiles to materials made from certified fibers. Plus, it has set a goal to hit net-zero carbon emissions by 2023 to align with the Paris Climate Agreement.

You may know Parade for its line of quirky intimates, but did you know it also uses sustainable practices? Around 80% to 95% of all its lingerie is made from recycled materials, making it one of the most eco-friendly brands you can add to your underwear drawer.

Del Moment isn't any old sustainable brand; it's a cool one—or at least that's what one can deduce after looking at its collections. But what makes this brand shine is its sustainable track record. The brand's factories have been accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia, which sets standards for factory workers' minimum wages. In addition, the brand always sources sustainable materials for its collections (certified Tencel and cotton), and a portion of its proceeds go to the organization 1% for the Planet.

What's another brand that's centering upcycling in its creative process? Rentrayage. Founded by Erin Beatty in 2019, the womenswear label has made waves for its ability to use deadstock fabrics to add depth to everyday staples.

Unless you're an economist, you might not know that fluctuating prices for raw materials often impact the wages of workers unless brands are advocating otherwise. One brand that has always been a champion for ethical production is Veja. Since the footwear brand's launch in 2004, it has partnered with countries across South America to pay a larger market price for the organic materials it uses for its sneakers to ensure that every person that's part of the process (from farmers to factory workers) would get their fair share. The result is a pair of kicks you can feel solid about.

In a world that now functions with a global economy, it's rare to find a brand that uplifts smaller communities, yet that's exactly what Soko does. Founded in 2012, the jewelry brand aims to empower artisans in Kenya by offering training programs and livable wages. Moreover, every piece of jewelry is made from recycled materials and molded using recycled water, so it's just as good for the environment as the community.

Mara Hoffman's work is a reminder that any brand can pivot to become a size-inclusive, sustainability-minded brand if they actually want to. So often in the industry, brands use excuses as the rationale behind refusing to go green, but not Mara Hoffman. Fifteen years after the brand's founding, it pivoted to working with fair-trade products and factories, reducing waste, and reusing materials to create a closed-loop system. Though it took time, the brand is now lauded as one of the biggest innovators in the space.

You can't round up sustainable fashion brands without mentioning the label that made it a thing: Stella McCartney. Of course, the brand may not have invented the concept of eco-friendly fashion, but since its inception in 2001, it has been at the forefront of innovation. Nothing speaks to that more than the brand's recent creation of pieces using Mylo—the first-ever vegan leather derived from fungi. Time and again, Stella McCartney proves that sustainable fashion isn't a trend. It's the future.

While there's no shortage of brands cropping up across cities around the world, it goes without saying that something special is happening in Copenhagen. So many noteworthy brands are emerging from the chilly capital, but none are as cool as the ready-to-wear label The Garment. The brand draws inspiration from vintage archives to create collections that circumvent time. The brand also sources sustainable textiles and regularly does carbon offsetting by being a part of environmental programs. It's a part of the 1% for the Planet pledge, so 1% of its yearly sales are donated to help environmental rehabilitation.

It's no secret that fast fashion has a negative impact on the environment as well as workers. In fact, major denim factories have been reported to be hotbeds for harassment, wage theft, and health hazards. But there's one brand that's changing that narrative one pair of jeans at a time: Outland Denim. Founded in 2008 by James Bartle, the Certified B Corporation set out to change the working conditions by offering living wages and educational enrichment programs. What's more, every part of the production process takes into account how it will impact the communities it's taking resources from—for example, the brand has removed the usage of pesticides on its cotton to reduce toxic runoff and soil quality reduction.

Apparis began back in 2016 as an outerwear label aiming to be an alternative to fur coats. Since then, it's not only led the charge in creating eco-friendly outerwear, but its signature faux furs are also made from biodegradable materials like corn. In many ways, Mashu's bags (like every other brand in this story) remind us that we don't have to sacrifice style for sustainability. In fact, they must meld because it's the only path forward to a better future.

With spring comes Earth Day—a perfect time to evaluate your environmental impact. It's no secret that the fashion industry has increasingly negative effects on the Earth. As a fashion editor, I love shopping, putting together an outfit, and expressing myself as much as the next fashion person, but I think it's important to reconsider some of our purchasing habits in favor of more Earth-friendly choices. I've been opting for more sustainable clothing options than I used to, and I found some really cool brands along the way. When we buy beauty products, we usually don't consider much more than the price, the purpose and whether the product will work for our skin or hair type. But now, more than ever, it's important for brands and consumers to start thinking about how our beauty shopping choices impact the planet.

These days, there are so many beauty brands using labels like "sustainable," "vegan" and "eco-friendly," but it's not always clear how the brand has interpreted or actioned these claims. Ultimately, there's really no way to be 100% sustainable, but what we can do as consumers is champion the beauty brands that really are trying to do their bit for the environment. Small everyday actions such as swapping out a moisturiser or lipstick for a more sustainable version and opting for a refillable shampoo over a new plastic bottle are just a few ways we can take a more sustainable approach to shopping for beauty products.

It created the first Soil Association–approved beauty products and was acknowledged as the world's first carbon-neutral high-street retailer back in 2008. On a mission to become the world's most sustainable professional-led skincare brand, Medik8 is a great example of how a brand can be sustainable and take a science-first approach to skincare. Of course, in addition to the products we use in our beauty routines, it's important to consider the tools we use. Things like cotton buds, cotton pads, and tissues are easy to overlook, but if you're in the habit of using them every day, they are contributing significantly to waste. LastObject is a B-Corp-certified brand on a mission to cut down on single-use items in the beauty industry. It offers up innovative multiuse solutions such as reusable cotton pads and sanitary towels.

It takes into account everything from the harvesting process to the source location, transport and manufacturing. Sustainability is a core value for Italian haircare brand Davines—its tagline is (and has been for over 20 years) "beauty + sustainability." The brand has been using renewable energy sources to power both its plants and offices since 2006 and has a zero-impact policy that offsets emissions generated to ensure packaging production is carbon neutral. Despite selling products all over the world and with a number of big-name retailers, it sources ingredients from small family farms in Italy, highlighting and nurturing those ingredients at risk of extinction.

Since launching in 2009, RMS Beauty has utilised easy-to-recycle materials like glass and aluminum to package its products, and in 2021, it debuted its first refillable products. This same innovation is even used when considering the materials used to create in-store display units.

11. UpCircle

UpCircle's story started with the idea that coffee grounds could be given a whole new lease of life, and the brand has since transformed more than 450 tonnes into sustainable skincare. From flower petals saved from wedding venues to blueberries salvaged as a by-product of the juicing industry, the brand strives to repurpose and upcycle ingredients wherever possible. Packaging used is 99% recyclable (there are plastic-free refills for the 1%), and you can even return empty packaging to the brand to be refilled with a 20% discount.

12. Aveda

Aveda was the very first beauty brand to use post-consumer recycled materials in its packaging—it's now used in at least 85% of the products' bottles and jars. In addition, its primary manufacturing site is powered by wind and solar power, and the brand uses 90% natural ingredients in its products. Supply-chain integrity and traceability are also important topics for the brand, and it works to create jobs in the places it sources ingredients from, teaching suppliers more sustainable farming techniques in the process.

Rhug Wild Beauty doesn't just utilise natural ingredients in their product formulations—where possible those ingredients are foraged. The likes of heather, nettle, elderflower, spring water, honey, and beeswax are sourced from the Rhug Estate in North Wales and combined with sustainably sourced natural actives—all chosen for their skincare benefits.

I'll be the first to admit I love vintage clothing, but spending hours combing through racks of musty apparel isn't my favorite way to spend a Saturday afternoon. On the surface, beauty might seem immutable. How much can you innovate when it comes to skin, makeup, hair, and nails, after all? In reality, however, beauty is more like an ever-changing machine, even if the core components stay the same. In recent years, we’ve watched beauty morph into something completely unrecognizable before our very eyes. Products and treatments have gotten more inclusive, higher-performing, smarter, and more sustainable. 

Think about how the landscape has changed in the past decade alone: Foundation shade ranges radically improved after Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty’s foundation with 40 shades in 2017. The Crown Act, a bill designed to end discrimination against Black hair, passed in the House of Representatives in 2019 and has become law in 30 states (FYI, it still hasn’t passed in the Senate). Credo started enforcing strict sustainability standards for its brands in 2020. Heck, until 2022, lead acetate was still allowed as an ingredient in hair dye. 

It’s clear that the beauty industry has been going through some major changes, and there are more on the horizon. In fact, the best is yet to come, as the beauty innovation space is in flux right now, with tons of new inventions in the works. From bringing hormones into the beauty conversation to brands bottling your favorite cosmetic treatments, the future of the industry looks bright. When we think about hormones, we often think about them exclusively as they relate to reproductive health. It makes sense, as they’re critical for things like fertility, sexual function, and even libido, according to Weill Cornell Medicine. But hormones actually serve a much larger function in our bodies, impacting everything from sleep to blood sugar levels. One vital organ that’s ruled by hormones? Skin. 

For women, in particular, skin condition is often at the mercy of your hormones. There’s hormonal acne, which can happen at all ages, according to Mona A. Gohara, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine and president-elect of the Women's Dermatologic Society. 

There’s menopause and perimenopause, which cause estrogen levels to dip, wreaking havoc on your skin. "Androgen levels, such as testosterone, remain constant and stimulate sebum secretion, says Rochelle Weitzner, founder of Pause Well-Aging, the first brand to address the effects of menopause on skin health. "With estrogen no longer protecting the sebaceous glands and keeping them in check, androgens take over and throw the glands into overdrive, which results in the production of excess sebum leading to blocked pores, excess skin cell build up, inflammation, and ultimately infection or breakouts.”

And of course, there’s your monthly period, which, as many women know, can make your skin tailspin out of control. 

For many years, skincare had a one-size-fits all approach, and whatever hormones did to your skin was just something to accept. Now, we have tools to fight back, and thinking about hormones and their relationship to skin health is becoming more and more mainstream. Pause Well-Aging has skincare specifically tailored to the needs of menopause-addled skin. The French skincare brand Payot has a custom rebalancing treatment made specifically for women to use during their period. Veracity is disrupting the market by making skincare and supplements based on each individual person’s hormones, which the brand analyzes in the form of a saliva test. In addition, many, many women (myself among them) are turning to prescriptions like spironolactone, a medication that blocks androgens to reduce cystic acne, according to Gohara. With more tools at our disposal and a more open dialogue about how our skin relates to our endocrine system, it finally feels like hormones are getting the attention they deserve in skincare.

Skincare and makeup have long existed in separate spheres. In fact, for a long time, makeup basically worked against skincare—it dried and broke you out while accentuating fine lines and wrinkles. Now, however, new skincare formulations have finally begun working in tandem with your skin. 

"Makeup has started incorporating active skincare ingredients that support and or balance the functionality and performance of the makeup product,” says Danessa Myricks, makeup artist and founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty. "For example, powders are inherently mattifying, however, not all have the ability to absorb sebum overtime. So pairing a powder makeup with a sebum reducing or regulating active ingredient provides instant and over-time results.”

Infusing skincare into makeup is also revolutionary for people with more sensitive skin. "Oftentimes, those with more severe skin conditions, like flakiness or blemish-prone skin, may experience irritation with makeup products, so this burgeoning category is really a solve for the everyday makeup user,” says Tisha Thompson, makeup artist and founder of LYS Beauty. 

Could makeup eventually render your skincare routine obsolete? The formulas might get smarter, but don’t worry, skincare will always be a vital part of your self-care routine. "Makeup should have skin-caring ingredients but should not be the main source of good skincare on your skin,” says Tayaba Jafri, the Global Beauty Director of Laura Mercier. 

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t more innovations to come in the makeup-skincare hybrid space. Maybe someday, makeup will be able to deliver highly efficacious benefits to your skin all day long. "I'd love to see radically more powerful and potent skincare infused formulas to rival actual nighttime skincare levels,” says Sèbastien Tardif, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Veil Cosmetics. "Wouldn't that be phenomenal?”

As we navigate a warming climate, it feels a bit passé to launch beauty brands or release new products without keeping sustainability top of mind. Still, many brands continue to be behind the times on the eco-friendly front. "It is estimated that over one hundred billion units of cosmetics packaging are produced globally every year, and the vast majority is small format, virgin plastic,” says Mia Davis, Credo VP of sustainability and impact. She explains that many brands slap a recyclable label on products that can’t actually be recycled, continue to use ingredients that have major environmental footprints, and ship products and raw materials all over the world. 

Some brands are actually committed to making a positive impact, like Caliray, Ellis Brooklyn, Le Domaine, and Uni, to name a few. Caliray Founder Wende Zomir says that the brand opts for the most sustainable packaging possible (and is constantly open to shifting for new innovations). Uni makes every product with the oceans in mind, which they refer to as "blue beauty.” "Our marine algae is sustainably sourced, our formulations are safe for land and all waterways, our packaging was designed to eliminate single-use plastic, and is all completely reusable,” says Uni founder Alexandra Keating. 

A major trend in the beauty sustainability space that’s gaining momentum? Upcycling. "We see coffee grinds turned into body scrubs, and parts of plants that were previously unused now turning into hero ingredients. Whenever something that already exists can be used, that is a win for the environment, and hopefully for local growers or manufacturers as well,” says Davis.

Ellis Brooklyn and Le Domaine are both utilizing upcycled ingredients in their products. Bee Shapiro, Ellis Brooklyn’s founder, shares that both Bee and Salt (two of the brand’s best-selling fragrances) are made using upcycled ingredients, and an upcoming fall launch will have eight different upcycled ingredients in it. 

In Le Domaine’s case, upcycling came first and skincare was a happy coincidence. Fifteen years ago in France’s Rhône Valley, the Perrin family wanted to find a way to upcycle the grape pommace—a mixture of the skin and seeds that are leftover from grapes after they’re pressed for wine—from their wine estate. The family had a hunch the pommace was jam-packed with antioxidants. After enlisting the help of University of Bordeaux and Pierre-Louis Teissedre, PhD, to analyze 13 different grape varieties, Le Domaine was born. "Following more than a decade of research, Teissedre isolated specific compounds derived from the skins, seeds and stems of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes to create a now-patented antioxidant formulation which can reduce oxidative stress and improve replication at the cellular level,” says Christelle Clarac-Boutot, development manager for Le Domaine. "In other words: Slow the signs of skin aging. We did not set out to create a skincare line, but our reflections on upcycling made it happen.”

Back in the day (even just a few years ago), it was easy to spot an orange, streaky self-tan job a mile away. These days, however, it can be nearly impossible to tell whether a good self-tan is the product of a bottle or the sun.

"Skincare has come a long way, so it only seems natural for self- tanners to take on the same evolution,” notes Kristyn Pradas, renowned celebrity tanning artist and founder of her eponymous product line, Pradas Glow. "Today’s self-tanners feature advanced formulations that can create a more natural-looking, streak-free tan. These formulas often include ingredients that enhance color development and are easier to glide onto the skin (which will reduce the appearance of streaks or patches); more shade variety that more easily caters to different skin colors and undertones; odor inhibitors and improved scent technology; speedier dry times; easy-to-use application methods; clear or water-based formulations; and nourishing ingredients that help to hydrate, brighten, and even firm the skin.” As a whole, advancements in all of the above areas have made self-tanning products far more user-friendly, effective, and appealing to wider audiences.

"I personally think the days of a self-tanning product only doing one thing are in the past,” says Sivan Ayla, co-founder of +Lux Unfiltered. "More and more products are incorporating skincare benefits and ingredients that, traditionally, haven’t been in the DNA of most self-tanning products. If someone is going to invest in their skincare routine, which, in my opinion, includes self-tanning, it’s only fitting to choose products that use superior ingredients that will enhance the results and your experience.”

While everyone has their own preferences when it comes to self-tanning, Pradas predicts that we’ll see fewer lotions, as they can take longer to dry and develop compared to more efficient options like mousses, drops that effortlessly mix into a moisturizer, or fast-drying tanning waters. You can also expect to see more and more skincare-grade ingredients (like hyaluronic acid, peptides, aloe vera, etc.) in addition to a greater emphasis on color-correction.

"In 2018, we launched Isle of Paradise as the world's first color-correcting self-tanning brand,” shares Jules Von Hep, Co-Founder of Isle of Paradise, Sephora’s number-one self-tanning brand. "This was a true innovation within the self-tanning category, as no other brands had previously played in the space. Fusing the color-correcting theory into tanning formulas was groundbreaking. Similar to color-correcting CC creams, Isle of Paradise's color-correcting self-tanners help reduce redness, brighten, and minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation creating an even tone.” Color-correction, paired with greater customizability, really allows customers to choose and cater their experience in a way that’s new and completely unique world of self-tanning. More so than ever, we have the ability as consumers to choose a formula that will complement our individual skin needs, undertones, patience, skill level (when it comes to application), and our end result.

"Looking natural is the biggest trend in beauty right now,” says Pradas. "Working with your skin’s undertone and making sure your tan looks natural—whether it is on the lighter side or the darker side—is key to achieving the perfect self-tan. Often, people assume self-tanners are only for people with fair skin, and while they can certainly help those with fair skin achieve a sun-kissed glow, the right self-tanner can also enhance and even out the skin tone for those with darker skin tones as well. We’ll continue to see a greater emphasis in a range of shades and formulas to suit various skin tones and preferences.”

Self-tanning formulas that are more suitable for adding a natural glow to the face are also seeing a rise in popularity, with more and more consumers swapping in a glowing complexion for their base products like foundation, bronzers, and contours. "This is a simple step that has really turned into a massive trend as consumers are seeking healthier, more natural everyday facial glow without the heavy makeup,” agrees Von Hep.

It wasn’t that long ago that hair tools were essentially a one-way ticket to hair damage. Not only that, but many of them were also hard to use—they were heavy, clunky, took forever to warm up, and only had one or two settings. Now, hair tools are becoming so advanced that they’re hardly even recognizable from their old-school counterparts. 

"There are more options in size, performance, ability, and heat control than ever before,” says Sarah Lund, a hairstylist for Kevin Murphy. "This gives people the ability to find a tool that best suits their hair type, texture, and overall styling needs.” They’re also safer to use, thanks to lower temperature settings and options for automatic shutoff. Plus, many of them heat up within seconds, revolutionizing the game for many hairstylists (and saving energy at the same time!). 

One major hair tool innovation in recent years? Multiuse tools like the Dyson Airwrap. "These tools have multifunctions such as drying, smoothing, and curling, all in one,” says April Story, hairstylist with Frederic Fekkai Salon and beauty expert. 

It might seem like hair tools have hit their peak, but there’s plenty of room for more innovation. Marilena de Graaf, product manager Balmain Hair Tools, envisions hair tools moving into the sustainable space in coming years. "This might include tools made from recycled or biodegradable materials, or tools that are manufactured using more eco-friendly processes,” she says.

What do *current* mainstream beauty products like BB creams, CC creams, cushion compacts, essences, pimple patches, and sheet masks (phew!!) have in common? They’re all innovations naturally born out of Korea’s skin-first beauty philosophy—aka getting to the root of skin conditions instead of just covering the complexion up with makeup. 

"This is the driving force behind K-beauty’s meteoric rise,” says Charlotte Cho, esthetician and curator behind the epic K-Beauty retailer Soko Glam. Not only has K-beauty become widely accepted and mainstream, but it has also served as a deep influence for how Western brands choose to launch, market, and manufacture their products—incorporating many of the same innovative and K-beauty-centric ingredients in addition to prescribing longer-winded skincare routines modeled after Korea’s famous 10-step skincare ritual.

But, while other western and indie beauty brands may be fashioning their products off of a Korean beauty legacy that has quite literally spanned thousands of years, the innovations within the K-beauty space are ever-evolving. "Korea is a leading mecca for skincare innovation, so there are exceptional advancements found in Korean skincare formulas whether that be breakthrough ingredients, formulas, new product categories, more sustainable packaging or delightful textures,” adds Alicia Yoon, esthetician and founder of Peach & Lily. "Over the last ten years, Korean skincare has made huge advancements in formulating vegan and clean beauty products that are safe for the skin and our earth—formulas that don't require tradeoffs in efficacy or texture. There have also been incredible new ingredients that have been created through very sophisticated fermentation technologies that allow for a whole new world of ingredients and even more sustainable manufacturing.”

Yoon emphasizes that sustainability across all levels—ingredient sourcing, manufacturing, supply chains, and packaging—have made huge strides in innovation in recent years—an accomplishment made all the more important as Korea is one of the largest exporters of skincare globally. "These breakthroughs will elevate the whole industry all over the world when it comes to more sustainable practices without tradeoffs in product stability, preservation or performance,” Yoon explains. Serving as a major influence and precipitator towards innovation across all brands and cultures, K-beauty, as Cho tells me, really has become known for pushing the envelope. "From their unique textures, and advanced and effective ingredient formulations, to their packaging, formats, and affordable price points, K-beauty leaves no stone unturned.”

Up until recently, products geared toward natural hair felt comparatively nonexistent—especially if you were to haunt the aisles of some of our country’s biggest and most influential beauty retailers. Thankfully, there’s been significant growth and innovation in recent years, paralleling a push towards the normalization of natural hair in mainstream spaces like work, school, and the entertainment industry. It’s a push, explains Taydra Mitchell Jackson, Head of Marketing at Sundial Brands, Unilever that has also empowered more people to embrace their textured hair in all settings, further driving innovation in terms of styling and product development.

"One of the most amazing things about textured hair is its versatility, and there are some really innovative formulas, and even just conversations and education, surrounding how to take the utmost care of natural hair,” notes Maeva Heim, the founder of Bread Beauty Supply. 

Greater education and knowledge about natural hair has also been pivotal for innovation. "Over the past years, natural hair care has grown to become more knowledge informed with people who have textured hair learning more and disputing dated traditions to create regimens that lead to optimal health for their curls and coils,” Jackson explains. "When we think of innovation, we see the development of hair care systems designed to cater to the needs of textured hair through its entire journey—from wash day to protective styles—with brands becoming ever more versatile providing a multitude of options for people to choose from.” 

In particular, products geared toward the scalp, safe styling (think styling gels and edge gels), and categories like mousse, have seen lots of transformation and innovation in the natural haircare space. No-compromise ingredients have also become a top priority. "We're starting to see modernizations of products that have always been around but haven't always contained the most hair-friendly ingredients,” says Heim. For instance, Bread just launched a hair gel, which is pretty much the antithesis of the outdated formulas that can lead to a dry, stringy hair texture. It’s water-based, so in addition to lending great hold, it’s also hydrating, boosted with antioxidants, and delivers a glossy seal of protection that helps improve the integrity of the hair over time.

As beauty consumers have collectively gravitated towards healthier and more sustainable product formulations and ingredients, Jackson says that what’s left out of a product is just as important as what’s added in. "At SheaMoisture, we’re very intentional with our no’s: no parabens, no sulfates, no mineral oil, no petrolatum,” Jackson explains, "Though there is no one-size-fits-all for ingredients that are gold standard, SheaMoisture looks to create collections that those with natural hair can confidently choose from for their specific needs and concerns.” For instance at SheaMoisture, Fair Trade Shea Butter (sourced from generations of Black women in Africa) serves as the foundation of every single product. As Jackson puts it, the culture is literally in the bottle. 

As far as emerging trends and what the natural hair space needs to see more of, Jackson says there’s a need for more manageable, versatile, and easy regimens that won't take up hours of an entire day. "Whereas the eight-hour wash day was a big thing at the height of the natural hair movement, textured hair wearers are now looking for simpler routines that allow them to spend time doing the things they love,” says Jackson. "For this reason, braids are really big right now—Black women want the freedom to wear their hair how they want without the pressure from society to conform. We set and define our own standards of beauty, but we are really starting to see more personalization in style choices.” Whether that be a wash-and-go, locs, weaves, relaxer, or braids, beauty consumers with textured hair need brands to show up for them—no matter where they are in their hair journey.

ICYMI, everything and anything scalp-related has been dominating the beauty market as of late with the industry shifting to a proactive (versus reactive) approach to scalp care and hair health. "For much of my career as a hairstylist, there have only been reactive, temporary solutions to common hair issues,” says hairstylist and co-founder of Arey, Jay Small. For instance, if someone was battling dryness, a hydrating mask would be prescribed or if someone was dealing with gray hair they wanted to cover up, they’d be tossed a hair dye. "In recent years, however, we’ve seen a shift toward proactive solutions for hair growth that are similar to what we have witnessed in skincare over the last decade—and the most significant is the realization that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.” 

"One of the biggest innovations in the category is the shift to treating issues with scalp and hair health holistically with formulas meant to address both the symptoms and the causes of concerns like hair loss, hair damage, and graying strands,” says Dan Hodgdon, CEO and founder of Vegamour. Essentially, we’re finally treating our scalps with the same kind of TLC and preventative priority as we have our complexions via skincare for years. 

A growing market for topical products applied to the scalp is emerging, but so too is the need for truly effective supplements that get to the root of common issues like thinning, hair loss, graying, dandruff, and more. "In 2016 when Nutrafol was founded, it was a new concept to explain that there are multiple, underlying root causes that affect hair health for men and women differently,” Sam Archer, VP of product marketing and innovation at Nutrafol explains. "Customization has been growing in this category tremendously and the more we understand the bio-specific needs of different people the better we can bring targeted solutions and improve efficacy.” Now, many other brands have followed Nutrafol’s lead, and Nutrafol has launched even more products to target the varied root causes of hair loss. 

Not surprisingly, the most notable and buzzed about innovations and products on the hair scene right now are born from the brands that realize how intertwined scalp and strands are for creating better, healthier hair overall. K18, for instance, is known for its K18Peptide, a nature-inspired, biotech-driven peptide that seamlessly fits in and reconnects broken polypeptide chains at the molecular level. Now, the brand has expanded into the shampoo category (the formulas are pH-balanced) with the knowledge that the scalp is at the epicenter when it comes to the integrity of the hair. "Hair and scalp are an interwoven ecosystem, so you can’t enjoy scalp health without hair health and vice versa,” K18’s Co-Founder and CEO Suveen Sahib confirms. "The more product we have in our hair, the more likely we are to have an aggravated scalp and clogged pores. Excessive product usage with different pH ranges and chemicals interacting with all the environmental nano particles get trapped in your hair and scalp and wreak havoc.” The same holds true for excessive heat styling and blow-drying, and too-frequent washing. The popularity of bleaching and hair dye is another area of concern. 

Moving forward, products that proactively address scalp stress and damage while also offering gentle yet highly effective multitasking properties, will be the name of the game. The more efficient one product is, the less products a consumer will need overall, which leads to less bottles, and better sustainability practices. "As an industry, we need to radically simplify,” Sahib concludes. "It’s how to keep hair healthy and strong without adding unnecessary steps. A healthier scalp and healthier hair is less needy for product, which is better for the planet.”

It’s not your imagination—injectables are suddenly everywhere. Whether you want to freeze your features in time, plump up your lips, or even add volume to certain areas of your face, there’s an injectable for that. And now, injectables are getting smarter than ever. 

"Over the past several years, the landscape for fillers has evolved rapidly,” says David Shafer, double board-certified plastic surgeon and medical director of Shafer Clinic in NYC. "While there used to just be one or two fillers in a category, now, there are several with specific FDA indications.” Recently, Allergan Aesthetics launched a hyaluronic acid filler specifically for the jawline callled Juvéderm Volux XC. It’s the strongest filler on the market so far for providing structural support to the face. Shafer says that biostimulatory fillers, or fillers that stimulate collagen production, are also changing the filler market. 

In the world of neurotoxins, Botox is no longer the only item on the menu. The tox du jour is Daxxify, the newest FDA-approved neurotoxin. Like Botox, Daxxify blocks muscle contractions to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. "While effective, the drawback to the original neurotoxins was a relatively short duration of effectiveness,” says Josh Zeichner, associate professor of dermatology and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. "In most people, treatments last only about three months. [Daxxify has] effectiveness [for] up to six months.”

Daxxify’s endurance is thanks to a peptide that coats the toxin. "The team has coated botulinum toxin with peptides which allow the toxin to attach to its target cell better and to be incorporated into the neuron faster,” says Melissa A. Doft, MD. "The clinical result is an earlier onset and longer duration.”

As more and more people opt for injectables, the market won’t be slowing down anytime soon. The Allergan Aesthetics Future of Aesthetics Global Trends Report found that thanks to more open dialogue surrounding injectables, they’re becoming less taboo, and more people are open to learning and trying injectable treatments. As more people let go of injectable stigma, the question isn’t if these needles (or canulas) will keep getting smarter, but how.

There’s an interesting arm wrestle happening in the beauty industry right now. On the one hand, there’s a growing popularity and awareness surrounding various injectables and other youth-enhancing cosmetic treatments (see above), and on the other, a sky-rocketing launch pad of products that promise similar "age-defying” results. But can devices that vibrate across our faces or topical elixirs we press into our complexions or along our lash line truly deliver in-office caliber results? 

"In-office procedures such as lasers, peels, and microneedling will always have the advantage in terms of efficiency, speed, efficacy, and sheer power, but at-home treatments can definitely get you a bit of the way there—slowly but surely,” says Lara Devgan, MD, MPH, FACS, and founder of Dr. Lara Devgan Skincare. "I think of them as complementary pathways, rather than one replacing the other.”

"One of the things that’s really interesting about fillers and injectables is that they’re put underneath the skin,” note Co-Founders of Ourself Lauren Otsuki and Vimla Black-Gupta. "They balloon up in the areas where maybe you’re losing fat pads or they’re going down lower in the muscle, but the one thing they don’t do is work on the actual skin, which is the thing that everyone sees.” While high-quality products that help hydrate, plump, and firm might not necessarily replace more invasive procedures, they’ll go a long way in the overall appearance and resiliency of our skin—especially as we get older and experience natural signs of aging like loss of elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. 

"At-home treatments can bring a little bit of the magic of in-office procedures to the comfort of your bathroom mirror and vanity,” says Devgan. "Not only does this revolutionize the comfort of the experience, but it also democratizes beauty in a novel way.” Remember, in-office treatments don’t just require downtime to recover, they can also be prohibitively expensive. 

Hyperpigmentation topicals have come a long way and are a category where the industry will continue to see lots of game-changing innovation. These products are laced with actives like vitamin C, vitamin B, vitamin E, ergothioniene, apigenin, retinol, bakuchiol, niacinamide, mixed molecular weight hyaluronic acid, and more to deliver in-office results in the comfort of home. There have been amazing advances in the realm of lip-plumping products that can grant filler-like results (even if only temporarily) and lash serums that can replace treatments like extensions.

What’s more, even more intense procedures like lasers are making their way into the home field. Take, for instance, the Lyma Laser—a ground-breaking technology that yes, you can use at home. The Lyma laser uses low-level laser light therapy, which has been medically proven to produce collagen and heal the skin through a process called photobiomodulation. "The crux of every single at-home beauty device is harnessing enough power to create cellular change whilst ensuring that capability is completely safe for consumers to use,” explains the brand’s founder, Lucy Goff. "The laser beam in the LYMA Laser is the same model that cuts car parts in factories, made entirely safe and in the palm of your hand.”

Science-backed efficacy is becoming the gold standard for up and coming products and at-home treatments. As far as specific ingredients, Devgan predicts peptides, mixed molecular weight hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and retinoids will reign supreme in coming years. "In prior generations we would see products that were mostly glycerin and vitamin E— just fluff material. Now, consumers are smart and want the real stuff.”

I think we can all agree that new-season pieces are permeating our feeds and the spring wardrobe transition is now fully underway. With every glimmer of sunshine, I'm inching further towards summery styles and the easy dresses, comfy sandals and pretty accessories in my arsenal (of which there are plenty). As premature as might think it be, I've already packed away my heavy coats and have pulled out my lightweight outerwear instead, which is soon to be followed by airy materials like cotton and linen.

Although I'm an advocate for personal style, spring and summer is a great time to broaden horizons, whether that's experimenting with new colourways and shapes or adding interest to simple looks with fun accessories and statement jewellery. But, when it comes to my favourite new-season offerings, I can't deny there's a common thread: a celebration of classics with a twist and buttery hues.

If you probe below the surface of any concrete or cobblestone city, you find something that makes it innately unique. For some global capitals, the defining feature is the cultural traditions, architectural gems, extensive history, and local cuisine. But for some, the creative communities put it on the map—or at least that's what I deduced after spending a week in the chilly and ultra-chic capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. 

While this Danish country has all of the aforementioned things, the one thing that truly sets it apart is its fashion scene. Most may equate the idea of a "fashion capital" with some of the more apparent destinations (i.e., Paris and New York), but that's far from the truth. Many cities, including Copenhagen, have carved out their place in the industry. The city's budding fashion scene can be recognized for a few things, like the incredible crop of designers doing the work. But there's also another force at play here, and it's Copenhagen International Fashion Fair (or CIFF for short).

Now known as the largest biannual trade show in Europe, CIFF has become pivotal in cementing Copenhagen as a fashion hub. But that status wasn't attained overnight. The event has dealt with its challenges over the years—from scaling to navigating the COVID-19 pandemic to combating the misconceptions around trade fairs in general. Yet CIFF is doing better than ever. It just celebrated its 30th anniversary, has appointed a new director, and plans to make the event a cultural touchstone for the community. That aim to modernize the very notion of what a trade show can be is something I felt wholeheartedly when I attended the event in early February. How the organization is going about supporting brands surpasses the cookie-cutter model of trade shows of the past—it's doing something extraordinary.

And to showcase that, I've spoken with the newly appointed director of CIFF, Sofie Dolva, about how the organization has evolved and how it will continue to support Copenhagen's fashion scene. Plus, to highlight the talent that was a part of this year's fair, I spoke with six designers about the importance of trade shows and what makes Copenhagen the coolest fashion city. If this event, these designers, and this city weren't on your radar before, they will be now. 

About CIFF

WHO: Sofie Dolva, director of CIFF

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

I've been in the fashion industry for seven months but have worked in parallel industries (beauty and fast-moving consumer goods) since 2010. 

You were recently appointed the director of CIFF back in 2022. How did this role come about for you? And how are you hoping to further the legacy of one of Europe's largest trade shows?

I was personally approached by CIFF for the role, as they were looking for someone with experience from both a startup culture and corporate. I aim to be able to use my entrepreneurial background to develop the fair-trade concept further. Hence, we increase the return on investment for our brands and stay relevant for our buyers and visitors. We need to remain agile and evolve together with the needs of the industry.

How would you define a trade show for those unfamiliar with it? And what do you think are some of the most common misconceptions about fairs?

The core of a trade show is to showcase collections to buyers and media. We always try to focus our efforts on what's new and exciting for our guests, and we segment the brands so it makes sense so everyone can explore the brands that fit their target group. At CIFF, we try to inspire beyond the typical trade show set-up, allowing brands to use their space as creative installations and creating opportunities for networking through our talk schedule and daily social events, all of which provide our guests with food for thought around wider industry topics. 

Just this past month, CIFF celebrated its 30th anniversary. Over that period, how do you think the event has changed the global fashion industry?

I don't think the event has necessarily changed the industry, but I do think the event is a good platform to get direct feedback and to understand how you need to adapt, change, and evolve to stay relevant.

In addition to impacting the global fashion industry, CIFF has become a crucial part of Copenhagen's smaller community. In what ways have you been able to help local talent in Denmark?

We try to support and sponsor local and emerging talent, as I feel it is part of our responsibility. One of the examples is our close collaboration with Alpha, where we host their annual fashion show and our newly opened showroom for new talents. The showroom is located with us year-round and is 100% sponsored by CIFF.

One thing differentiating Copenhagen from other fashion hubs is its continued dedication to sustainability. How has CIFF been a part of championing a more eco-friendly fashion industry? And how do you see the organization continuing to play a role in changing how we define and practice sustainability in the industry?

Within our close network, which spans the whole industry, we act as a springboard for members of our community to connect with each other and learn from one another across a range of matters, particularly on sustainability, something which is intrinsic to Scandinavian culture in general. Through talks and events, we try to act as an educational platform and give our community the toolbox they need in their journey toward being a more responsible brand. This way, we can help smaller brands that do not have enough resources or know-how but who really want to make sustainability an intrinsic part of the journey.

From working in this role thus far, what have you learned about the fashion industry as a whole that you hope to change through your leadership at CIFF?

I think one of the things I've noticed the most is how difficult it can be to become accepted by the industry without the right network. It is a closed industry with many emotions compared to many other industries. I would love to use our platform to showcase the diversity of fashion and embrace brands that have huge potential but are missing the network.

Since CIFF is about giving brands a platform to meet people in the industry, are there any standout brands from this year that you're personally obsessed with (e.g., any Danish brands or designers that are leading the way in sustainability)?

I am completely in love with Iso.Poetism by Tobias Birk Nielsen. I love how he makes circular fashion cool. I really like when people go all in, and one of my favorite universes at CIFF this season was Notes du Nord. They showcased their collection and universe in a unique way, housing their collection within a white-curtained cube that housed their own mini, elevated showroom. I really admire how they combine business savvy with modern Nordic design.

How do you feel CIFF has contributed to putting Copenhagen on the map in the fashion industry? And what do you hope this event will be able to achieve in the future? 

As CIFF has been around for many years, we have created a huge international awareness that has helped push Scandinavian brands and make Copenhagen a destination for fashion and design. Right now, we have a huge momentum, and I'm sure we can accelerate even further as we move toward August and our acquisition of the Revolver trade fair comes into play.

Designers to Know

WHO: Mary Furtas, founder of CultNaked

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

I started doing fashion photography when I was still in high school—[it's] hard to believe, but this year marks 15 years of my career! I dropped out of university to pursue my dream and shot for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar when I was 21. And then I decided to pivot into fashion design and founded CultNaked in 2017.

What compelled you to start your label? How has the brand evolved since its founding?

My obsession with comfortable partywear made me do it! I kept reconstructing my closet to make it more fitting, unique, and cozy to dance. Once I realized people were very much into my outfits and constantly asked where I'd get them from, the work started in that direction. The brand grows with me, which is natural and the most exciting part of doing the business. We are obsessed with the fits and the real-life street style factor of it—not losing the sexy, which is sewn into the DNA.

You just were at CIFF in Copenhagen showing your fall/winter 2023 collection. As a designer, why was it imperative you be a part of a trade show? And what's one thing you wish more people knew about the process of being a part of a trade show as a designer? 

Our brand has mostly built its following online for five years by knowing exactly what our client wants and perfecting our skills. And I felt like we were ready to take on B2B and be a good partner to stores we admire, so we decided to be a part of CIFF. Being there felt amazing; it's inspiring how Copenhagen shares our vision to create a more sustainable future for the industry. My team felt very welcomed, and it's important to have that when you're a newcomer to the industry.

Typically when we think about fashion capitals, people think of cities like Paris, NYC, and London. Why did you choose to show your work in Copenhagen over other fashion capitals? And how do you feel Copenhagen's creative scene is changing the fashion industry as a whole? 

We took a chance to show in Copenhagen because it feels young—just like us! Many cool people come to this city to see the dazzling street style and enjoy creativity from the community, and for us, it felt like a great match. We're also shoring in Paris and Milan with our partners this year, but the approach to sustainability and style in Copenhagen can't be beaten.

Besides all the budding talent, one thing that makes Copenhagen unique is its continued dedication to championing sustainability. As a designer, how do you define sustainable fashion? And how do you apply it to your own work?

Being transparent, no brand is 100% sustainable. If it was, it wouldn't exist. But our main aim is to challenge the fast-fashion model and create pieces that champion quality materials and fair pay for workers. I don't want my clothing to end up in a landfill. That's why we're doing our best to create long-lasting pieces. And the way we're doing that is by prioritizing making less stock. We have our own production in Lviv, Ukraine, and being a digitally native business, we do a lot of made-on-demand after the client already places the order. The speed would typically be the same: Dispatch time is within two days. Of course, we use the best, most up-to-date recycled fabrics, organic cotton and viscose, deadstock, and everything that's possible to make it less harmful.

Speaking of your work, please tell us a little bit about your recent collection. Where did you draw inspiration from? Are there any standout looks or trends you hope we'll take away from this collection?

I don't often think of myself as a designer, more like a creative director to make things make better. My inspiration comes from what I want to wear. It's that simple. I'm currently obsessed with the maxi-skirt trend we've seen everywhere along with the crystal-netted pieces we've seen everywhere. With summer coming soon, those are the perfect pieces to shine in.

Lastly, what do you hope your legacy will be as a designer? How do you hope your work will contribute to cementing Copenhagen as a fashion capital? 

We're definitely going to be showing again at CIFF next season because the vibes are incomparable. To me, it's already a fashion capital. I am very grateful for the support of Ukrainian designers at CIFF when we need it most, and I hope we can pay back by bringing more value and energy.

WHO: Celine Aagaard, founder, co-owner, and creative director of Envelope1976 

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

I have been in the business for about 25 years, starting in the realm of journalism, photography, and styling as the editor in chief of different magazines in Norway. After that, I did a few small, successful design projects before starting my own label. I decided to launch Envelope1976 in October 2018. 

What compelled you to start your label? How has the brand evolved since its founding?

When we launched, there was a gap in the market because the overall focus was based on trends and not seasons. We wanted to create a more seasonless brand with a focus on minimalism. We wanted to grow organically and have been selective with what doors we wanted to open regarding production. Still, internationally, we are at Net-a-Porter and a few smaller concept stores in Copenhagen, France, Spain, and Germany. Since the launch, we have opened our own concept store in Oslo and Barcode. And in August 2022, we had our first runway show during Oslo Runway, with a new one coming this fall.

You just were at CIFF in Copenhagen showing your fall/winter 2023 collection. As a designer, why was it imperative you be a part of a trade show? And what's one thing you wish more people knew about the process of being a part of a trade show as a designer?

I think we all were a bit more skeptical about showing at trade shows a few years ago, but when we were asked, we decided that it was worth a try. For me, as the creative director and founder, it's important to take part in all aspects of the business, and the sales part is something I have been involved in since the very beginning. You learn a lot, reach out to new people, and get feedback that could be very needed in the process. 

Typically when we think about fashion capitals, people think of cities like Paris, NYC, and London. Why did you choose to show your work in Copenhagen over other fashion capitals? And how do you feel Copenhagen's creative scene is changing the fashion industry?

Copenhagen has always been close to my heart when it comes to fashion. As a Scandinavian born and raised in Oslo, I have to admit that I have always been inspired by the effortlessly cool Danish people. I also think Denmark has taken an important position in the business by focusing on sustainability. For us, the fact that sustainability is their top focus was one of the reasons why we chose to show in Copenhagen at the fair. We still do our show in Oslo and do have showrooms in Paris, but I think the sustainable agenda and the opportunity to meet new stores, buyers, and clients are what drew us to the city.

Besides all the budding talent, one thing that makes Copenhagen unique is its continued dedication to championing sustainability. As a designer, how do you define sustainable fashion? And how do you apply it to your own work?

Our focus is to create seasonless collections with an edge, focusing on sustainability both in the design and in the fabrics we use. Longevity is the key to sustainability—you should be able to wear items for years. And the main problem in the industry and with consumers is that we have forgotten that.

Regarding your work, please tell us a little about your recent collection. Where did you draw inspiration from? Are there any standout looks or trends you hope we'll take away from this collection?

For spring, the collection is inspired by my road trips in the past. (I even did hitchhike back then if you can believe it.) Imagine being in the middle of nowhere with dusty roads all around, insane heat, and no clue what village to be the next to visit—that was the inspiration. For us, we reflected through an oversize blazer and a pair of washed stone-gray denim. We had edgy biker details, fringe details, and also shearling. It was a fall collection drop with spice and edge, and it's not even done yet. There's more to come.

Lastly, what do you hope your legacy will be as a designer? How do you hope your work will contribute to cementing Copenhagen as a fashion capital? 

We're a Norwegian fashion brand focusing on sustainability, and in many ways, that's aligned with Copenhagen's approach to fashion at large. It's not sustainable at all to produce any new clothes, but we hope we can inspire people to make some better choices, and that's how we can make changes in the business for a better future.

WHO: Sara Emilie Terp, founder and artistic director of Casc8

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

I graduated from Central Saint Martins MA womenswear in 2015 and worked at Celine before starting Casc8 in 2018. 

What compelled you to start your label? How has the brand evolved since its founding? 

I wanted to create something that reflected my beliefs and ideas, offering an alternative perspective to the status quo of the fashion world. Casc8 has grown organically, establishing new partnerships, collaborating with other creatives, and being represented in select retail spaces worldwide.

You just were at CIFF in Copenhagen showing your fall/winter 2023 collection. As a designer, why was it imperative you be a part of a trade show? And what's one thing you wish more people knew about the process of being a part of a trade show as a designer?

A trade show can be where you meet people across the industry, not just buyers but also manufacturers, investors, journalists, and other creatives from the industry. It's altogether a great place to network and learn about the industry.

Typically when we think about fashion capitals, people think of cities like Paris, NYC, and London. Why did you choose to show your work in Copenhagen over other fashion capitals? And how do you feel Copenhagen's creative scene is changing the fashion industry? 

I am from Copenhagen originally, so it felt quite natural to present a collection here this season. Copenhagen is a great front-runner when it comes to working toward a more sustainable agenda, and I think it's something other fashion capitals will adopt in the near future.

Besides all the budding talent, one thing that makes Copenhagen unique is its continued dedication to championing sustainability. As a designer, how do you define sustainable fashion? And how do you apply it to your own work?

I've always thought it was fairly difficult to call a product fully sustainable, as we are ultimately adding more products into a world that already has more than we need. But sustainability can be when you consider the full life cycle of a product, the materials you are using, and the way it is made. I want to aspire to design products that are circular, timeless, and long-lasting and value the quality aspects of production. In my work, I try to focus on using existing materials—more specifically, turning the abundant plastic waste we are currently struggling with into something useful. Currently, I collaborate with an NGO organization in India, which is weaving upcycled plastic into beautiful textiles. It is a project that supports the art of craftsmanship and values the importance of artisan communities while also communicating a positive message about the possibilities of recycling materials.

Regarding your work, please tell us a little about your recent collection. Where did you draw inspiration from? Are there any standout looks or trends you hope we'll take away from this collection?

The autumn/winter 2023 collection is called Sol Wanderer and is a metaphor for the wearer of the Casc8 bags. Sol means sun in Danish but can also sound like the English adjective sole—hence she is an independent, sometimes solitary nature lover and worshipper. Nature is always at the heart of my inspiration. For this collection, I collaborated with print designer Fiona Blakeman, who hand-screen-printed a delicate flower print in hues of rosa, lemon, and charcoal onto the woven upcycled plastic textiles. Casc8 also presented bags featuring a photographic print series of favorite peaceful nature spots, such as a pale-blue infinite horizon of a Danish sea view and a lake in Vienna where the sky is mirroring its reflection.

Lastly, what do you hope your legacy will be as a designer? How do you hope your work will contribute to cementing Copenhagen as a fashion capital?

It would be great to be associated as a designer with the movement of championing sustainability within the fashion field. I hope my work will add an alternative contribution to all the existing brands out there.

WHO: Sara Sode, creative director and co-founder of Notes du Nord

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry? 

My love for fashion began when I, as a kid, read my mom's fashion magazines. I have also danced professionally for many years, where outfits made a huge difference. I used to sit with my mom and dad. We designed and sewed my dance costumes for years. As an adult, I got a fashion-industry job and knew right away that this was what I wanted to do. We officially launched our brand on June 6, 2016, with the first delivery in January 2017. 

What compelled you to start your label? How has the brand evolved since its founding? 

We saw something was missing in the market and wanted to create a high-end brand with affordable prices. We had serious growth from 2017 to 2020 before COVID-19 hit. Then we had to rethink the entire business and find our feet again. In the process, I feel that we have refined our identity as a brand with a very clear design DNA, and we have made a strong strategic growth plan for the next three to five years, so I'm very excited about the future. 

You just were at CIFF in Copenhagen showing your fall/winter 2023 collection. As a designer, why was it imperative you be a part of a trade show? And what's one thing you wish more people knew about the process of being a part of a trade show as a designer? 

Especially after grappling with a global pandemic, we as a brand must support CIFF as a leading trade show in one of the world's fashion capitals. The CIFF team has made a tremendous effort to transform it from a local trade show into a global fashion event. And I wish more people knew all the steps to create clothing. There's the initial design process, where you sketch ideas and make patterns; then, you develop a print or fabric. Then you have to create samples and go through the fitting process to take those pieces and shoot them for a lookbook. And then you're showing the pieces at a trade show so buyers can bring the brand into their stores. If people knew more about the production process, they would appreciate fashion on another level.

Typically when we think about fashion capitals, people think of cities like Paris, NYC, and London. Why did you choose to show your work in Copenhagen over other fashion capitals? And how do you feel Copenhagen's creative scene is changing the fashion industry? 

Well, we're Copenhagen based, so it's a natural choice for us. But honestly, I view the Copenhagen creative scene as equally crucial as Paris, NYC, and Milan—not only for fashion but for interior design and even beauty. We all grow up knowing that we live in a small country in Denmark, so we must go global to create a financially successful business. I feel that Copenhagen's creative scene is driving change regarding inclusivity and sustainability. In 2022, Denmark could provide 59% of its energy consumption from wind and solar energy. And the Copenhagen fashion industry is following suit and leading the way. 

Besides all the budding talent, one thing that makes Copenhagen unique is its continued dedication to championing sustainability. As a designer, how do you define sustainable fashion? And how do you apply it to your own work? 

We've focused on getting sustainability certificates on the fabrics before we call them sustainable. We are setting the bar high and keeping to the true meaning of the word. If we break down our collection and look at the number of styles containing sustainable elements and fabrics, we're far ahead of other brands.

Regarding your work, please tell us a little about your recent collection. Where did you draw inspiration from? Are there any standout looks or trends you hope we'll take away from this collection? 

My recent collection has been dubbed Ode to the Moon. I typically find my inspiration in nature or the elements. For me, it's always about contrasts. The inspiration for fall/winter 2023 is drawn from the moon. It's a powerful symbol of femininity, intuition, and creation, and just like the moon sheds light and enhances the beauty that is already there, I want this collection to do the same for you—to enhance the beauty that you already possess.

Lastly, what do you hope your legacy will be as a designer? How do you hope your work will contribute to cementing Copenhagen as a fashion capital? 

At the very core of my soul and our design DNA, I aspire to empower women and encourage them to stand tall, feel sexy, and look exquisite. I want us all to feel comfortable and stylish in our skin! I want to make it easy to dress up confidently and ensure that the transition from sophisticated socialite to driven career woman, from loving mom to femme fatale, feels effortless and looks elegant. I don't want women to fit my brand. I want my brand to equip women for whatever occasion.

WHO: Awa Malina Stelter and Stephanie Gundelach, co-founders of OpéraSport

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

Awa Malina Stelter: I've been in the fashion industry for 11 years and worked in production and design.

Stephanie Gundelach: I've been in the fashion industry for over 15 years and have a background as a freelance consultant and stylist.

What compelled you to start your label? How has the brand evolved since its founding?

AMS: We started OpéraSport in 2019 with the desire to show an alternative to the traditional business models that the majority of the industry operates with today. We want to show that sustainable clothing can be sexy. When we started in 2019, we were based in separate cities, Copenhagen and Paris, and were attracted by the similarities and contrasts between the two cities. It is something that lies deep in OpéraSport's DNA—the love for classy Paris and sporty Copenhagen. From that, we created a brand emphasizing elegance, usability, and responsibility.

SG: And to add onto that, a responsible way of thinking reflects production, where we only use recycled and organic materials and where the demand reflects how much is produced. OpéraSport started with a vision of only being a B2C brand, selling directly to our consumers through our own channels. We quickly got a lot of attention and saw a rising demand from retailers who wanted to have OpéraSport as a part of their brand portfolio. Now, we are both a B2C and B2B brand.

You just were at CIFF in Copenhagen showing your fall/winter 2023 collection. As a designer, why was it imperative you be a part of a trade show? And what's one thing you wish more people knew about the process of being a part of a trade show as a designer?

SG: It was our first time being a part of a trade show. We have always felt like our needs were covered through our own showroom, but when CIFF reached out this fashion week, we had a great dialogue, and we were interested in exploring the possibilities a trade show could give. We do not have much experience in being a part of trade shows and being a small independent brand. There was a lot of preparation involved. But it was a great experience because we were meeting a lot of potential retailers and getting to know a lot of like-minded brands that we could exchange experiences with. 

Typically when we think about fashion capitals, people think of cities like Paris, NYC, and London. Why did you choose to show your work in Copenhagen over other fashion capitals? And how do you feel Copenhagen's creative scene is changing the fashion industry?

AMS: From 2019 to 2022, we were based in respectively Paris and Copenhagen, but last summer, Stephanie moved from Paris to Copenhagen, where we are now based with an office with five employees and four interns. We were born and raised close to Copenhagen, so it felt natural to have our show here. However, we dream of being able to have a show abroad one day. Regarding how Copenhagen's creative scene is changing the fashion industry, CPH Fashion Week has certain sustainability requirements that introduce a minimum set of standards that all CPHFW show schedule brands must conform to by 2023.

Besides all the budding talent, one thing that makes Copenhagen unique is its continued dedication to championing sustainability. As a designer, how do you define sustainable fashion? And how do you apply it to your own work?

SG: Sustainable fashion is responsible fashion. It focuses on quality instead of quantity. The intention remains to ensure relevance and timelessness throughout. At OpéraSport, we try to minimize our footprint on global CO2 emissions by producing responsibly. Since the first collection, all fabrics besides cotton have been created from industrial waste. This includes silk, wool, polyester, and cotton. If our cotton is not also recycled, it is organic and GOTS certified. And all our collections are made-to-order, meaning we only produce the quantities our customers have ordered and what we believe our webshop can generate. Therefore, no excess stock will be produced to minimize overproduction. Right now, we operate with four collections a year—spring, summer, fall, and winter. By doing this, we can deliver and sell our products when they are most relevant to the changing seasons.

Regarding your work, please tell us a little about your recent collection. Where did you draw inspiration from? Are there any standout looks or trends you hope we'll take away from this collection?

AMS: We got inspired by artist Tom Anholt's paintings and loved the idea of using his paintings as prints, so we decided to collaborate with him. We love his choice of colors and the whole mood in his artwork. The star-filled night skies in dark blue and purple hues have set the tone for our color board and also inspired us to make embellished upcycled showpieces. The collection is a bit darker than usual, and we've added some Western details to complement the painting with the white horse. The key details are our signature bows, logo-embroidered denim, ruched vegan leather, and logo buttons.

Lastly, what do you hope your legacy will be as a designer? How do you hope your work will contribute to cementing Copenhagen as a fashion capital? 

SG: We believe that OpéraSport is a part of changing the fashion industry, both in our way of combining the sporty practicality of Copenhagen with the contemporary classics from Paris but also in the responsible production and sustainable mindset, which has been an integral part of OpéraSport's business model from the very beginning. 

AMS: We hope to contribute to change in the industry by showing that sustainable clothing can be sexy and chic whilst setting an example of what it means to be a responsible and sustainable fashion brand.

WHO: Jannik Wikkelsø Davidsen, founder and creative director of Han Kjøbenhavn

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

I was so inspired by the street style scene in Copenhagen that I decided I wanted to start designing. I founded Han Kjøbenhavn in 2008 and have been building the brand ever since. 

What compelled you to start your label? How has the brand evolved since its founding?

I felt that I had a story to tell and a different way of telling it. I actually started designing eyewear because of my love and fascination for the harder shapes and almost sculptural expression. This evolved into creating seasonal ready-to-wear collections and runway collections.

You just were at CIFF in Copenhagen showing your fall/winter 2023 collection. As a designer, why was it imperative you be a part of a trade show? And what's one thing you wish more people knew about the process of being a part of a trade show as a designer?

As a creative director, it wasn't my decision whether we should be at a trade show. However, being at CIFF was a great way to create brand exposure and traffic that allowed us to meet and connect with new people and a new audience.

Normally, we showcase our season's creations in Milan, and then we also have a smaller showing in our showroom and for buyers at CIFF in Copenhagen. Obviously, I'm very connected to Copenhagen and Denmark, and it fuels my creativity. Still, I find it challenging to scale the business. That's why we combine and expand our creative scene beyond one city.

Everything is about good behavior, whether you're referring to a human being or the way you produce your collections—you just have to be responsible. For me, choosing to be a sustainable brand is similar to being the best version of yourself. It's about aspiring for the best possible version of whatever you're creating and taking care of your surroundings in the process.

Regarding your work, please tell us a little about your recent collection. Where did you draw inspiration from? Are there any standout looks or trends you hope we'll take away from this collection?

I rarely get inspired by a specific thing. It is more about my emotional state at that moment in time. Of course, you get affected by your surroundings all the time and by the community around you, but when designing, I only look at myself, my opinions, and where I am in my emotions at that specific time. The brand was really born out of this need to transform some of the dark Danish surroundings, and even my own dark emotions, into something beautiful, and that's always the inspiration. 

Lastly, what do you hope your legacy will be as a designer? How do you hope your work will contribute to cementing Copenhagen as a fashion capital?

My aesthetics are very Danish, but it is not Danish in how people precept it and how Denmark is usually "sold." All I am trying to do is connect emotions with people. Hopefully, the creations I make are something people can feel. If I can make people feel something they don't normally feel at that specific moment, then I've done my job well.

One of the best things in life is discovering something new, albeit through exploring a new city, trying a new restaurant, or binge-watching a buzzy show. But, for fashion people, it's a bit different. We, after all, live for the hunt; finding that perfect pair of jeans or vintage designer bag is a lifetime hobby. However, even for the most fashionable person, it can be overwhelming to think about just how much there is to find out there, still.

There's all of the knowledge that one can glean from historical archives (which is a lot). And then there's the ever-shifting array of "new" things to know about—whether that's a trend, a new it-item, or a rising brand. Add on top of this fact that the global apparel market generated over 1.53 trillion dollars in 2022 and saw a 4.9% increase in the number of fashion brands registered in the United States alone. 

In short, keeping up with the industry can feel like a full-time job. Luckily for you, my entire career is dedicated to making that process easier. In an effort to cut out some of the noise, I did some digging to unearth eight fashion brands founded in the past three years that are worth your attention. The goal was to find designers that were not only starting their brands in an oversaturated industry but bringing something truly fresh to the table through their work. Ahead, you'll hear from each designer about the challenges of starting a label during a global pandemic, what whitespace they're hoping to fill in the market, and how they're hoping to change the industry.

WHO: Anna Teurnell, Founder of Teurn Studios

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

I started as a teenager as a visual merchandiser, but I soon knew I wanted to be a designer. I went to art school, pattern constructing at school, and also studied at Beckmans College of Design to have a solid platform to stand on. After that, I spent six years at H&M as the head of the trend department, and then shortly after that, I was a part of founding a new brand within the H&M Group, & Other Stories. I was then headhunted to be Marimekko's creative director, and I held that role for more than three years until I went work at Arket for six years until founding my brand. So I've been in the industry for many years. 

How did you realize that you wanted to start your label? 

I needed to work differently, and I wanted to create a high-end brand with a strong DNA and uncompromised quality. I wanted to be able to work with people that I truly love to spend my time with and be able to work on creating our own distinct tone of voice. It is so rewarding to be part of creating a brand and going from idea to reality.

It's no secret that there are so many brands out there, but for you, what did you feel was missing in the market before you started your label? What do you hope to bring to the industry? 

We bring very high-end ambitions when it comes to the look, craft, and quality, but at sensible pricing. We also try to bring a clear tone of voice, which is pared back, to the point, inclusive, and inspiring. Perhaps most important of all, we create the wardrobe we want to live in ourselves. There are indeed a lot of clothes out there, but in the end, we have struggled to find pieces that we truly love and want to use for years and years. Teurn Studios offers clothes that are easy to understand and that work for many moments of one's life—from morning to evening and everything in between. We believe that what we create should enable our clientele to move without friction in their busy lives.

One thing that makes your label so special is that it champions sustainability and circularity. For you, why was it imperative to create clothing that can outlast the trend cycle? 

We always want to be working with both craft and sustainability in mind. This entails a lot of things. If we make clothes that last for a very long time, it is more sustainable. If we choose lower-impact materials (i.e., organic, recycled, certified), it is more sustainable. If we partner with the artisans and craftsmanship that we have in Europe rather than hunting for the cheapest labor, it is more sustainable. 

You have spent years working in the fashion industry as a designer for various large brands. How have your collective experiences in the industry impacted how you approached every aspect of your business, from product design to marketing? 

What stands out most clearly is that I can now create the wardrobe I have been longing for myself, a mix of elevated staples made from exceptional materials and with a distinct design.

So often, when consumers see the price tag of a luxury piece, they're turned off. How do you hope your brand shifts the way people think about buying clothing? 

It is great to be working with suppliers and craftsmen and not have to compromise on quality. We may be sourcing leather from Italy, tailoring from Romania, and jersey fabric from Portugal to ensure each piece is the best it can possibly be. And while that may mean we charge a bit of a higher price, we must learn as consumers that creating something great comes at a cost.

The past few years have been tumultuous for many designers—from dealing with supply-chain issues to the pandemic. Did the instability of the market ever deter you from starting the label? And how, if at all, has it impacted your approach to your work? 

It has been a bit stressful because when you start a brand and have a low quantity of pieces you're producing, the pieces you do buy from factories are at a higher price than when you can produce more. So out of the gate, we needed suppliers who believed in us and supported our vision. But I'm more convinced than ever that there's a gap in the market that needs to be filled with great products, and Teurn Studios is aiming to do just that. 

You just released your fall/winter 2023 collection—can you tell us a little about it? Where did you draw inspiration from? How long did it take to develop it? 

It has been an organic transformation of ideas we already worked with. We've kept wearability a central focus through our carryover products like tailored suits, knits, and great outerwear but used new fabrications and colors. And then, to add contrast, we incorporated colored leather pieces, baggy denim, and glitter shoes into the collection.

Lastly, though the brand is still new, how do you hope it will change the industry? What do you envision for the future of the brand? 

We are by no means trying to transform the industry in a "technique" manner. We hope that Teurn Studios will contribute to more of a long-term wardrobe-investment philosophy among consumers. We hope we can help turn fashion less "fast," if you will, and that we can be part of moving forward by looking back to a time when craft, curation, and quality were the dictating aspects of any brand.

WHO: Lauren Burke, Founder of Cafe Society

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the fashion industry?

I have been in the fashion industry for the last 10 years, working with various brands, from lifestyle to luxury. My most recent position before Cafe Society was with KCD, a global public relations firm specializing in media relations, production, digital, VIP services, and more. I was the associate digital manager at the New York office and managed digital campaigns, social media strategy, influencer relations, and consulting.

How did you realize that you wanted to start your label? 

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to have my own label. My father has been in the garment industry for over 45 years, so I grew up around the industry and continually spent my summer days with his designers practicing my sketches. 

It's no secret that there are so many brands out there, but for you, what did you feel was missing in the market before you started your label? What do you hope to bring to the industry? 

When exploring categories within the fashion industry that were true to my personality and style, I recognized a gap in the market for elevated yet attainable hats that were made with the utmost quality and detail. My goal with Cafe Society is for consumers to begin investing in pieces that are made to be durable and timeless.

One thing that makes Cafe Society so special is that each hat is handcrafted. For you, why was it imperative to champion a more sustainable way of producing hats? 

The late Dame Vivienne Westwood has always been an inspiration to me, especially with her approach to fashion—buy less, choose well, and make it last. As the fashion industry has such a large effect on the environment, it was imperative that I used as many sustainable practices as possible when creating my hats. My goal is to create pieces that are made to last, allowing consumers to buy fewer better-quality items.

In choosing to produce hats, did you run into any initial challenges? And how did you overcome them?

As each hat is handcrafted by local artisans in Ecuador, my biggest challenge is the supply chain. Handwoven Panama hats have been a tradition in Ecuador for centuries, and unfortunately, the number of artisans left has decreased significantly. So things are taking much longer to produce, as there are only so many hands and so little time, but we've incorporated the slower pace of production into how we approach our collections.

You have spent years working in the fashion industry. How have your collective experiences impacted how you approach every aspect of your business, from product design to marketing? 

I have been fortunate enough over the last 10 years to work in various roles within the industry, including digital, PR, marketing, and design. Through these opportunities, I have been able to gain a well-rounded approach to fashion, which has allowed me to understand branding and consumer sentiment. 

What's one thing you think many consumers may not know about the hat industry that you're hoping to change through Cafe Society? 

Similarly to what I stated above, I would love to educate consumers on the history of hat making and hat weaving in Ecuador and the sustainable nature of my business model.

The past few years have been tumultuous for many designers—from dealing with supply-chain issues to the pandemic. Did the instability of the market ever deter you from starting the label? And how, if at all, has it impacted your approach to your work?

Although it hasn't had a direct effect on the startup of Cafe Society, there is an ongoing effect on the supply chain that's impacting artisans worldwide. After the pandemic, the supply chain has been severely hindered, leading to inflation. After experiencing the effects of the pandemic on both the hat and fashion industries, my approach going forward is to be able to adapt to the new normal and be patient with growth.

You just released your inaugural collection—can you tell us a little about it? Where did you draw inspiration from? How long did it take to develop it? 

I have been developing the idea of my first collection for a few years. However, after I left full-time employment, it took roughly one year for design and production. And for my debut collection, I wanted to tap into the same idea of creating a timeless wardrobe. Just as every closet needs those staple items (for me, it's the perfect black blazer, white tee, vintage denim, leather pant, and kitten heels), I wanted to create a hat collection that offers staple hats in neutral tones. Once my staple styles were created, I added those more "fun" items (e.g., our orange-toned cowboy hat) to make a well-rounded offering.

Lastly, though the brand is still new, how do you hope it will change the industry? What do you envision for the future of the brand? 

Cafe Society aims to help people buy fewer but better-quality items to establish a timeless wardrobe. I have big plans for the future, but I don't want to give too much away just yet.

WHO: Qixin (Cici) Zhang, Founder of R.l.e.

For those who are unfamiliar with your work, how long have you been in the industry? 

I completed my degree at the University of the Arts London and founded the label in November 2021.

How did you realize that you wanted to start your label? 

During my time at university, I participated in many lectures speaking about sustainability today. I couldn't see who cares about sustainability and the action taken to support it although the discussions were productive. Sustainability has always played an essential role in my personal life. I drew inspiration from these places to create a label with a sustainable production chain instead of just using sustainable fabrics. It's about the root of the label. It's a way of life.

It's no secret that there are so many brands out there, but for you, what did you feel was missing in the market before you started your label? What do you hope to bring to the industry? 

From my perspective, the fashion industry needed to reflect on the production line because I find many people think being sustainable is just using sustainable materials, but sustainability is more than that. I also felt that very few young people insisted on slow fashion and craftsmanship, and I wanted to bring the delicacy of craftsmanship and the understanding of sustainability into the industry so that more people could see that there was someone from the younger generation who insisted on it.

One thing that makes your label so special is that you champion sustainability throughout the production process. Can you tell us a little bit about how you make sure each collection is truly sustainable? 

At R.l.e, [we] not only use ethical and natural fabrics but also create an environment for sustainability within our studio by setting up a few different recycling bins to collect waste calicos, pattern papers, and fabrics. The cut-off pattern paper will be remade into brand labels and packaging. The cut-piece fabrics will be remade into 3D yarns to make bags and accessories. Some of the waste calicos will be used for the next round of toile making, and some will also be made into 3D yarns for later experiments. The most important thing is to find a way of reusing everything, and we are still exploring and developing more techniques to reuse and remake the waste.

You actually used to work as a florist in London. What made you decide you wanted to pivot into fashion design, and how have your collective experiences in the industry impacted how you approach every aspect of your business, from product design to marketing? 

Yes, and I am actually still a freelance florist now. Working with flowers always brings me new inspirations and ideas. Working with people from different industries is always a great way to learn something new and see things from a different perspective. It helps me think in different ways, for example, balancing creativity and practicality from both the consumer's and designer's points of view. 

How do you hope your brand shifts how the industry defines sustainable fashion? 

The industry's definition of sustainability will change over time. I hope that R.l.e's presence will impact people to be more aware of the importance of craftsmanship and how a lack of it is the root of environmental problems. Sustainability is not just about materials innovation and eco-production processes. It is also about creating pieces that will last longer.

The last two years have, undoubtedly, been hard on every industry, and while it may sound challenging and irrational to create a brand in these difficult times, it may also be an opportunity, especially as consumer behavior has changed dramatically in the last two years. We all take sustainability more seriously. The industry's instability has certainly caused a difficult start, but it has also given the brand experience in dealing with bad situations.

You just released your fall/winter 2023 collection—can you tell us a little bit about it? Where did you draw inspiration from? How long did it take to develop it? 

The collection continues the journey of discovering one's inner world: What is the sense of security we are ultimately looking for in our hearts? This question is the overriding inspiration behind the collection. We will also be releasing our first knitwear design pieces. More care and attention have been paid to ethical yarn and fabric selection as well. It's already been four months since my team and I began to develop the initial idea. It took a lot of time to develop the patterns or toiles before it was finally ready to present.

Lastly, though the brand is still new, how do you hope it will change the industry? What do you envision for the future of the brand? 

The brand has just started, but I hope that, at this stage, R.l.e's approach to sustainability, slow fashion, and craftsmanship can somehow influence some young people to think about the future of the fashion industry and encourage the designers who share the same vision as us and stick to it. As young designers, we are responsible for contributing to sustainable development and preserving craftsmanship.
