Independent labels, often led by female designers, such as Hattie Crowther, Nicole Chui, Sophie Hird Studio and Renata Brenha, are rethinking the traditional football aesthetic, making it feel unique (often their designs are on-off creations) or hyperfeminine. Ironic slogan tees with taglines like "the ref can't hear you babe" and "I just want both teams to have fun" are great for those who love Y2K, or don't want to feel too serious.

Adding to this, many brands now offer 'football inspired' styles that capture the aesthetic without having any ties to a particular club. From Acne Studios to Miaou, Adidas and ASOS, one can show support for their favourite brand as much as their favoured team. Even Harry Styles tour merch adopts this aesthetic. This too allows for a little more self expression: pink! polka dot! personalised! Whatever your flavour, there's likely a footie jersey for you.

How to Style Your Football Shirt?

One question we often get asked is how to style football shirts. My advice, honestly, is to treat it like any other top in your wardrobe, just because it might be visually more impactful than a white tee, doesn't mean you can't treat it as such. Sure you can go simple with jeans and sneakers, but I suggest having fun with it. Lace midi skirts, capris and thong sandals, layered over dresses—take it up a notch! Have fun with it! Go glamorous! Also, look beyond the jersey. Sports shots, be them short and silky like Harry Styles', or longer Bermuda silhouettes, are huge right now. Also with football socks, sports jackets, track pants as well as graphic wool jumpers—there's so much choice beyond the traditional shirt. Be sure to look to beauty and accessories too—scrunchies, scarves, even jewellery, as well as nail art designs, tooth gems. The bottom line is that there's nothing out of bounds, really... Or off pitch, should we say?

1. The WAG Is Back

Football culture isn't always just about the game and its players, sometimes it's about their wives and girlfriends. The most iconic era of WAG culture has to be in the 2006 World Cup in Baden-Baden, Germany. The main subjects were Coleen Rooney, Cheryl Cole, Abbey Clancy and their queen, Victoria Beckham. They were to the tournament what The Plastics were to Mean Girls. They ruled the tabloids, they caused havoc in the town with their excessive drinking and shopping, and were generally said to be a complete distraction. If you have an obsession with the Y2K era, the OG WAGs will serve as the ultimate inspiration for supporting our boys this summer. Think XXL sunglasses, baby tees and tank tops with ironic slogans, mini skirts and a healthy dose of lipgloss—all of which are just as essential now as they were then.

And, whilst it might be 20 years since this era, we're back with WAGs 2.0. From Tolami Benson, Saka's fiancé, to Gabrielle Figueiredo, the wife of Arsenal and Brazil player Gabriel Magalhães, there are many stylish wives and girlfriends supporting this year who have their own brand partnerships and social following. They might cause less of a stir with the paparazzi, but we're no less obsessed with their style. Follow immediately if you don't already.

2. "Mel C-Core" (Not Blokecore)

"Blokecore" was huge in late 2021-22. Starting on TikTok but developing into a major trend around the the time of the last World Cup, it developed into becoming a broad term for generic football styling, despite it really drawing heavy inspiration from '90s British football fashion. Think back to those famous pictures of the charity football game between Blur and Oasis in '96: it was peak '90s athleisure, streetwear style: retro football jerseys, bucket hats, with club scarves and Stone Island jackets. The problem is with such a gendered term, is that it feels exclusionary for women, not to mention people of colour. Who What Wear UK senior fashion and beauty editor for branded content, Felicia Pennant, makes an excellent suggested revisal of the phrase—"for me, as a woman looking at that era, it's Mel C-core. She was the defining image of female football fandom in the '90s. And what's interesting is the evolution of that: back then on the playground, nobody wanted to be Sporty Spice, now she's the one that everyone emulates." So, if you too want to wear your oversized footie jerseys, scarves and sports jackets with your athletic capris and sneakers, just remember who you're really inspired by.

3. "Femme Footale"

Upcyling and personalising old and vintage football shirts has long been a trend, but lately I've noticed brands taking these traditionally 'masculine' garments, and making them ultra pretty and 'feminine'. Conner Ives' elasticated jerseys allow them to stretch and be completely fitted to the body, other more independent brands like Dilemma have added lingerie and corsetry. No more boxy, oversized silhouettes here! Look to sequin and beaded embellishments as well as fringing at cult label Cossa New York, lace sleeves at HoodBabyLA and bows, toggles, eyelets and ruffles from UK-based Hairy Mary. Don't be fooled into thinking official strips are the only way, there's a world of cute cuts and fabulously silly, frilly footie styles that despite being inspired by the original men's shirts, they couldn't be further from them.

4. Cool Collaborations

Wearing a piece from a designer sportswear collaboration is perhaps the best signifier of those in the know. Streetwear labels like Palace and Stüssy have long collaborated with sportswear brands on exclusive shirts, Martine Rose has her iconic Shox trainers with Nike, and Grace Wales Bonner's adidas collections and Sambas are some of the most sought after athleisure garments in the game. But in 2026, there's even more. Miaou x adidas, Puma x Ahluwalia, Slawn x Nike, Umbro by Slam Jam as well as Umbro x Aries—the options are truly endless!

5. More Than A Football Shirt

Shorts! Socks! Sports jackets! Please note: there's so much more out there than football jerseys. Venture beyond your usual tee and include tank tops, reworked dresses, sport shorts as well as accessories such as bucket hats, bandanas, sport socks and jewellery. What Are the Important Facts to Know About the World Cup?

First of all, it's not just in the USA, but Canada and Mexico too, making it more of a North America tour. This means multiple timezones, which can be tricky to track across the pond. Be sure to do your research and be prepared to stay up late to watch certain games. It's also the biggest tournament FIFA have produced, with a whopping 48 teams in the initial knock-out stages, and 104 games. Players we're excited to see return in the England squad are Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and of course, captain Harry Kane, all of which were the highest goal scorers in the World Cup 2022.
If you're wondering on who the favourites to win are, many have their money on France. After their loss in the 2022 final to Argentina, they'll be hungry to take the title this time, plus the nation's main capital team PSG (Paris Saint Germain) just won the Champions League a few weeks ago. Elsewhere in Europe, Spain and Portugal are firm favourites, with a stellar team lineup. Brazil, Germany and Argentina are always a good bet too, but their team isn't as strong as it's been in the past. Naturally, I want to shout out England, whilst they're not the bookies favourite, you never know—could this be the year the Three Lions bring it home? Let's see.

Well, well, would you look at that? She's back. "She" as in fashion month, and yes, I gave her a pronoun. It feels like it was just September when we were watching and gabbing about standout designers like Khaite, Colleen Allen, Tory Burch, and more as they unveiled their stunning spring/summer 2026 collections during New York Fashion Week. Now, the fall/winter 2026 New York shows are already behind us.

Of course, the runways were incredible. But just as captivating? The streets. New York Fashion Week street style was top-notch. As a Who What Wear editor based in the city, I attended a fair share of shows and presentations over the past few days and got a front-row seat to how the fashion set is dressing. It may be just me, but it feels like the street style has never been better. Some days, I couldn't walk a single block without subtly snapping a picture of an elegant outfit to keep on file for when I need some inspiration.

If you live in New York, you know the weather hasn't exactly been showing any signs of spring. Instead, it's been bitterly cold. Because of that, staying warm and comfortable was a top priority for showgoers. This is why statement outerwear—styles that are the outfit—were everywhere. Accessories also played a big role: pouch bags and oversize sunglasses, to be exact.

For fashion people, certain prints—leopard, plaid, and zebra—function as true neutrals. This explains their prevalence among chic dressers during New York Fashion Week. Take inspiration from the street style looks I've gathered below, but choose a statement coat that resonates with your personal style. It can be anything from a short faux-fur leopard-print jacket and a plaid trench to a mid-length zebra pony-hair piece.

Slim-Straight Jeans

If you have read any denim stories on Who What Wear lately, you're probably aware that slim-straight jeans are quietly taking the place of baggy jeans. By spring, we anticipate the sleek style will be everywhere. By "slim-straight," we mean a straight-leg cut that offers a more fitted look around the thighs and ankles compared to traditional straight-leg jeans. Importantly, they are not as tight at the ankle as skinny jeans. Though there's a time and place for fitted-on-fitted styling, pair the denim with oversize jackets and sweaters to achieve a balanced look.

Forget leather blazers and moto jackets—New York Fashion Week's street style definitively signaled that the key trend for 2026 is the non-basic leather jacket. These updated styles retain a classic, timeless silhouette but are elevated with modern details. Oversize Eyewear

My prediction for New York Fashion Week was correct: Oversize eyewear is the It street style accessory. Having seen this style dominate the spring 2025 runways at major houses like Saint Laurent, Chloé, and Gucci, it was inevitable that it would soon hit the streets. Although it didn't fully take off last spring, it will dominate during the upcoming season. While you can find chic oversize options from those heritage brands, be sure to check out cool, under-the-radar labels such as Jimmy Fairly, Vincent Boulevard, and Thistles for equally stylish options.

Baggy Black Trousers

It wouldn't be New York Fashion Week without a sea of black trousers. After all, the city is known for its head-to-toe black attire. This season, opposite denim, I spotted black trousers in their baggiest forms, which have an inherently nonchalant ease. They drape just right, never trying too hard. They look intentional yet quietly cool, striking the perfect balance between polish and undone ease. While I saw them with shearling and fur-trimmed coats, you can't go wrong styling them with a belted wool coat, a layered sweater look, or a button-down shirt. And for shoes? Opt for low-profile loafers or ballet flats, and then, come spring, style them with elevated flip-flops.

Nestled in between the major fashion month shows in February and September, Milan Men's Fashion Week—which takes place in June every year—has attracted Italy's best-dressed in droves to the Italian city this week. With a runway itinerary that includes the likes of JW Anderson, Prada, Gucci and Valentino, the Italian fashion set arrived dressed to the nines for the elegant occasion.

4 MAJOR STREET STYLE TRENDS TO COME OUT OF MILAN MEN'S FASHION WEEK 2024

1. PALE BLUE

Style Notes: This summery shade has been everywhere this season, and for good reason. Adding a fresh and spirited energy to your day-to-day styling, this pretty colour trend was spotted all over Milan's streets this week. Whilst the colour always looks chic with similarly pale tones, it also looks elegant when paired with richer brown or burgundy shades that can anchor the light tone and create a dynamic ensemble.

Style Notes: Just in time for the Euros kick off, the sports-core trend was a major player this week in Milan, and the Italian crowd embraced it in every form. From baggy football shirts to roomy hocky jerseys and classic Argyls socks, no sporty style was left behind. Comfortable enough to jaunt from show-to-show, but interesting enough to match the fashion week energy, this sporty trend is one that you're bound to catch all over London's streets this season, too.

Call me biased, but I believe that only a few elite cities in the world determine what's cool in every aspect of culture—fashion included. For some, that city happens to be New York. Others are rightfully infatuated with Paris. But another capital that is always low-key ahead of the curb is Copenhagen. As someone lucky enough to travel to all of them, I can tell you there's something particularly cool about Copenhagen. You could attribute it to the city's budding food scene or unique hotels, but for me, it all comes back to fashion. With an expanding creative scene that has some of the buzziest brands of the moment, the city is cementing itself as a fashion capital in its own right.

The style inspiration doesn't stop at the runway, as some of the best street style looks for the entirety of fashion month can be found on the Scandinavian style set. That might seem like a wild statement, but after scouring hundreds of street style images, I've got the receipts to prove it. Ahead, you'll see some of the best street style looks from Copenhagen Fashion Week for fall/winter 2024. I also figured it wouldn't hurt to call out the seven biggest fashion trends from this season (with shopping recommendations), especially considering that they'll likely be coming to a zip code near you. If these looks don't convince you that Copenhagen is a fashion capital, then the eventual adoption of these trends surely will. 

1. All Things Furry

With Copenhagen being such a chilly city, it should come as no surprise that the fashion set would opt for furry outerwear. In part, that has to do with the fact that there's no better item to turn to when you're running around in ultra-cold temperatures to see the fall/winter collections. There are also so many different ways to wear faux fur at the moment that make adopting the trend even easier. Keep scrolling to see how the Scandi style set styled this trend.

One thing you have to love about Scandi fashion people? They're not afraid to take a few risks. Case in point: the widespread adoption of double denim. While some consider this trend dated, they proved that it could be cool again with some creative styling. Keep scrolling for proof.

Style notes: Clearly, the way to make double denim look dapper is by adding a leather trench, pointed pumps, and a '90s-inspired shoulder bag.

3. Lovely Leather Gloves

It might seem obvious that we'd see the style set wearing leather gloves in the dead of winter, but believe me—it was far from cliché. I saw several CPHFW street style stars take this boring winter staple and turn it into a bold statement piece. Keep scrolling to see how they did it.

Style notes: If you need proof that leather gloves don't just have to be styled with outerwear, see above. A light blazer, a button-down, jeans, and boots can be winterized with the addition of leather gloves.

4. Oversize Shades

Another accessory that had an outsized presence at Copenhagen Fashion Week? Oversize sunglasses. We always see this accessory play a part in the street style scene, but this season, the Scandi style set embraced frames that felt far larger than normal—so much so that I couldn't possibly exclude the trend from this roundup. Style notes: I saw oversize sunglasses used as a way to add an extra dash of drama to statement outerwear.

Style notes: In addition to traditional sunglasses, there was a great deal of semitransparent sunglasses and traditional opticalwear, all with oversize frames. They often were styled with neutral ensembles to make them stand out a bit more.

Style notes: Although I saw almost every type of oversize shades worn by the Scandinavian style set during the fall/winter 2024 shows, it's notable that there were quite a few rimless versions. I'm betting this will be the next It frame style among the fashion crowd.

5. Security Blanket 

Without fail, I always see one outerwear trend take over on the streets of Copenhagen. This season, it was what I refer to as the "security blanket"—a coat with a built-in scarf or wraparound element. From a pragmatic stance, the style allows you to stay warm, but it's also ultra-stylish, which is why it was one of the most popular trends in Copenhagen. Style notes: I saw the style set lean into the coat being the focal point of the look by opting for neutral tones only.

6. Stretchy Headbands

As we've previously reported, stretchy headbands have made a comeback. That's clear from how common the accessory was throughout Copenhagen Fashion Week. I saw this styled with everything from minimal-leaning 'fits to maximalist ensembles, making it the easiest accessory to adopt. Keep scrolling to see how the piece was styled.

Style notes: Typically, this hair accessory was styled in a way that felt very Schiaparelli-coded. For example, it was paired above with oversize clip-on earrings, sunglasses, a black jacket, a sweater, a pencil skirt, tights, and pumps.

7. Scandi Minimalism 

Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the trend that feels signature to this style set—Scandinavian minimalism. Long before quiet luxury was trending, the streets of Copenhagen were covered in minimal ensembles comprised of neutral-hued staples. It seems that trend has no signs of stopping either, as I saw it worn en masse to the fall/winter 2024 shows. Keep scrolling to see how this trend was styled this season.

Style notes: There's no better way to tap into the minimal vibe than with a gray-and-black outfit.

Style notes: But if you prefer neutrals, the style set showed that black and white can be exciting—with the right accessories, of course! A white blazer can feel fresh with the addition of a belt, leather gloves, and a sleek shoulder bag.

Style notes: Copenhagen Fashion Week provides the blueprint for making your outfits cool, even the all-black ones. Adding an oversize belt, a sleek '90s-inspired shoulder bag, and statement sunglasses to a monochrome outfit just might make you an honorary Scandi by default.

ICYMI, (and honestly if you have missed it, dare I ask, how?) the women's football World Cup tournament is well under way in Australia. Since the team's win at the Euros last year, there's actually a fragment of hope that England may progress quite far this time too (win, even!), meaning this is quite possibly the most excited we've collectively been over any sporting event, ever. 

But support for the women's team isn't just turning up to the pub on game day and cheering on as if we understand the off-side rule (I actually do know the off-side rule, just FYI), it's wearing your football shirt with pride as many times as possible, during and beyond the tournament itself.

Anyone with even a remote interest in fashion will tell you about the rising popularity of #Blokecore and "Soccer Girl" aesthetics trending on TikTok and beyond, which seem to be a different take on sporty fashion after years of hype over athleisure and streetwear. Perhaps a little more niche, but the spike in interest around football fashion specifically—whether it's because of the rising popularity of women's football, or not—is undeniable.

Drenched in nostalgia, searches for retro football shirts have peaked dramatically on the likes of Depop, and brands such as Prada, Adidas, Balenciaga and Martine Rose are adopting football culture and style into their collections. But before I bore you into oblivion about the history and nuances of football fashion, or break out into a passionate chant of "It's coming home", let me share with you four ways myself and our affiliates manager Jerrylyn Saguiped have styled our Home and Away shirts. 

1. KILT + LOAFERS

Style Notes: Kicking us off, we have the kilt. Jerrylyn and I actually both own kilts, and we fought over who would get to wear theirs for this shoot. As you can see, I lost. From the ever-popular Chopova Lowena tartan iteration to pleated minis in black, the mini kilt is having a moment, and it's the perfect short-skirt companion to your shirt. Pair with penny loafers and socks (preferably white) and a baguette bag to highlight the Y2K-ness of it all, and you're good to go. 

2. STATEMENT SILVER 

Style Notes: The most obvious way to style a football shirt is, unsurprisingly, with football shorts. But to elevate your shorts-and-shirt combo from pitch to pub, swap them out for jorts, or better yet, a statement pair like these silver ones, which are summer's answer for anyone obsessed with silver trousers this year. Metallics aside, when it comes to shorts—be they tailored styles, denim or nylon—a slightly longer length is what I'm after right now. So bid adieu to the hot pants this year, and say hello to balloon and Bermuda silhouettes. 

3. DENIM MIDI SKIRT + AIR MAX 

Style Notes: Denim midi and maxi skirts have had as much love as the aforementioned silver trousers over the last few seasons, for which we have Y2K and Gen Z to thank. Ramp up the noughties nostalgia with a pair of kitten-heel slingbacks, or if you want to remain more casual, the Air Max 95 in neon is the sneaker of choice. 

4. DAD JEANS + VOMERO SNEAKERS

Style Notes: I've called these dad jeans, but rest assured, they are in fact mine. What I mean is they're big, they're baggy and they're bleached—exactly as my dad wore them with his Newcastle United shirt back in '95. Along with my Nike Vomero trainers (which, between us, I think are the new New Balance 530s), this is dadcore at its finest.

If there's one pair of sneakers I can't seem to shake, it's the New Balance 550s. Throughout the year my saved folder has been brimming with influencers, editors and celebrities wearing them all different ways, showcasing their various colour-ways and collaborations. Notoriously selling out faster than you can say "hypebeast", these retro-inspired trainers are almost as difficult to get as Glastonbury tickets, and are fetching double their RRP on resale sites.

Whilst others may prefer the New Balance 327s, I love the nostalgia of the 550s. Inspired by 90s basketball, they're the pinnacle of streetwear style and the epitome of athleisure–so wearing with sweats is actively encouraged. Do you know that feeling when you can intuitively tell that something is happening but don't necessarily have the proof it is? Well, that's how most fashion editors and buyers feel about trends. While runway shows give us some insight into what will come back in style, it's all really hearsay until it's spotted in the streets of cities like Copenhagen and London. Fashion week is the fastest way to confirm our suspicions about what people are actually wearing. Of course, what trends manage to transcend the runway and become popular are based on a myriad of things (e.g., seasonality, wearability, and personal style), but possibly the biggest factor is location. It's not just that it has to come from a fashion hub. Rather, one particular city has always had its hand in dictating what's stylish: Milan. 

Hear me out on this. I know we are all Paris stans and love New York, but Milan is where it's at. And it's not just because some of the most prolific fashion houses, like Prada and Versace, are based in this city. It's also the street style scene. All roads may lead back to Rome, but most trends lead back to the cobbled streets of Milan. To prove that point, I've scoured thousands of street style images to round up some of the best outfits from Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023. Plus, I've identified the eight biggest trends everyone wore and shopped them out. Consider this your gut check about what's really happening. 

1. Heavy-Duty Leather

Heavy-duty leather pieces were a standout trend in fall/winter 2022 collections, but there was no telling whether this style would stick around until now. We saw a slew of leather jackets on the Milan fashion set—everything from oversize bomber jackets to overly worn-in moto jackets to '90s-inspired longline coats. 2. Menswear Ties

Let's make it clear: Suiting is nothing new. We've seen menswear staples like relaxed trousers, blazers, and even loafers hold a formidable part of the conversation for the past few seasons, so it only makes sense that ties would be next. And of course, it would be brought back into the fold by the style set in Milan. We saw ties' versatility on full display this fashion week through the styles themselves and the styling. From thin leather ties paired with hot pants to skirt suits paired with matching pinstripe ties, there was no shortage of street style inspiration when it came to this accessory.

If Milan proved anything, it's that maximalism is back, specifically in the form of metallics. From low-slung maxi skirts to denim jackets coated in silver to blazers and miniskirts adorned with heavy sequins to chrome accessories, metallics in all their forms shined this season. 'Tis the season for layering, and I can't personally think of a more adept trend for the times than extreme layering. Another prevalent trend I spotted on the streets of Milan was high boots. Of course, it's hard for this saturated shade not to draw attention, but the way the Milanese set styled this hue made it all the more stylish. There were so many ways this hue was made wearable for everyday life, further proving that no other city can show which trends are worth wearing like Milan.

As someone who's watched many streetwear brands and trends come and go, I have a good feel for what will stick versus those items that will end up looking super dated next year. Part of the trick is to look for "instant classics" and the more slept-on pieces that only the real ones know about. After all, the last thing you want is for everybody and their mama to be wearing the same thing as you.

Fleece layers have got to be the most underrated layer in history! The weight to warmth ratio is truly unmatched. Whether it's your inside layer or your top layer, fleece jackets and vests are worth the investment for every version of fall—coast-to-coast, L.A. to Chicago.

This trend is probably my favorite purely because a small investment yields big rewards in your styling game, and not to mention added warmth! Taqwa gets additional points for wearing the matching long-sleeve shirt—it gives greenscreen-ready, which I'm always here for.

Balaclavas

Given what we're currently going through (I don't refer to her anymore), the practical value of the balaclava trend is a reason in itself to pay attention. It's not often that you learn a new fashion vocabulary word, and I must say this one is here to say. If you've hit your hoodie and crew-neck quota, look no further than the cardigan trend to be the warm layer you need. The traditionally conservative silhouette has taken a decidedly eccentric turn this season, reviving new interest across the board. After all, there's arguably no other category besides swimwear that's more apt for the season. Whether it's dry-fit fabric or mesh, sportswear is literally made to be worn when it's hot. Realizing this and adopting sportswear into my summer wardrobe is definitely one of my most practical fashion decisions to date. Plus, the sporty aesthetic is getting a lot of love from brands, so our options continue to only get better. 

I scoured the internet for the best sporty outfits and everything you'll need to get the look, from sunglasses to workout sets, tops, hats, and more. I found that the best sporty 'fits tend to incorporate one performance piece at a time, mixed with the fashion aesthetic of your choosing—be it Y2K, cottagecore, or a Hot Girl Summer uniform. Sporty tops are often overlooked by fashion people, but lately, brands have leaned into making the category look cooler. I'm waiting for jerseys to truly blow up in particular. They are the GOAT in the summer and pack a strong punch stylistically, too.

I have been an advocate of sports bras as tops for many years now. Notice how I paired mine with a satin button-down and lots of gold jewelry to distract you from the fact that I am just wearing a sports bra.

Over the past few years, streetwear has grown from a niche in the fashion industry into an entire ecosystem of its own, including websites dedicated to keeping track of its wildfire prices and market-like ebbs and flows. This growing popularity has led to collaborations with luxury fashion houses and covetable limited product releases, which continue to increase the hype and the price tags. Next up, I Tried Out Four Fashion Trends That Just Went Viral on TikTok

The streets have always been my fashion magazines, aka where I look for style inspiration and hints on what trends are about to blow up. Pre-2020 me was very much inspired by what I saw strangers wearing on the subway, to the farmers market, or even to the bodega. I recall doing double takes often to mentally process the new trends or outfit ideas I'd seen so I could later take a crack at them myself. Who knows—I may have even gone on to influence someone else when I put some of those streetwear trends to the test.

I usually look to fashion on the streets in big cities like New York and Paris, but since the streets have been closed for the past year, I've now turned to Instagram to fill the void Union Square once filled. Turns out Instagram 'fits are big predictors of the cool trends to come. Below are the streetwear trends I can't wait to try once the world opens up again and my favorite picks to shop for each one.

Velour Tracksuits

I recently read that the '70s were as far away in the mid-'90s as the '90s are now. After taking a moment to digest what that means for me, I was able to understand why Gen Z is having a heyday with everything '90s. Baby Phat and Juicy Couture had a hold on us back then, and cool girls continue to wear velour tracksuits today.

Printed Denim

Denim has arrived in every color and pattern to wake us up from a daze induced by a year in sweats. My favorite thing about this trend is its ability to give rise to new color and pattern combinations that may surprise you.

Fairfax Avenue is the streetwear mecca of Los Angeles. Situated on a four-block stretch, you have the likes of Supreme, FourTwoFour, The Hundreds, Tyler, the Creator’s Golf Wang, and HUF. And in the heart of it all is ME., designer Melody Eshani’s namesake shop. She happens to be the only woman to own a store on Fairfax, and her accessible line of apparel, jewelry, and accessories has attracted notable fans including Rihanna, Billie Eilish, Lena Waithe, and Yara Shahidi, to name a few. But Ehsani’s style and cultural influence reach far beyond the pink walls of her Fairfax flagship. Pre-pandemic, she regularly hosted panel discussions and workshops with high-profile speakers across fashion, entertainment, and wellness. (They have since gone virtual.) And her capsule collections, whether it be in partnership with longtime friend Lauryn Hill or a line of merch inspired by the TNT series Claws, are constantly in high demand. It’s safe to say that Eshani isn’t just curating the latest streetwear trends, she’s setting them.

It should come as no surprise then that the Los Angeles native has been tapped by Foot Locker to be the new creative director of women’s business, where she will design quarterly collections for the retailer and amplify the brand to female consumers. If her previous footwear collaborations, like the Air Jordan ME. x AJ Fearless sneaker that sold out in two minutes are any indication, then our next casual shoe obsession is right around the corner. We caught up with Ehsani to talk about this exciting next chapter and how her team is weathering the COVID-19 storm. Plus, in addition to answering some of our burning style questions, like the footwear styles she says are here to stay, she also gave us a peek at some of the pieces she can’t stop wearing right now. Don’t miss our chat with the designer. 

Let’s start at the beginning. How did your design journey begin? What was one of the first items you ever designed/made?

The first items I ever made were all jewelry items. I had discovered the laser cutter and was obsessed with plexiglass. I wanted to make all the things I grew up wanting but couldn’t afford in gold. I made a three-finger ring of my name out of the plexi—along with the nameplate necklace—and used the plexi to make custom bamboo earrings that I had also covered in Swarovski crystals. Let’s just say they were very heavy.

What was your main mission in creating ME.?

Initially, I really just wanted to occupy my whole self and bring forward that expression of who I was through my creative output. It sounds simple, but as a woman who came from immigrant parents, those were fighting words. Through my work, I realized how many other women struggle in similar areas just to have the opportunity for wholeness of expression and the opportunity to take up space, literally and figuratively. That demographic became my "Why,” so to speak.

How is your Persian heritage reflected in your personal style and work as a designer?

It’s hard to articulate from an aesthetic standpoint. I know it’s woven into my design language. However, where I really draw from it is from the heritage. Poets like Rumi. The architecture—fun fact: Persians were the first to create indoor gardens—the miniature paintings, and the language… It’s so romantic. When you hear the translation of a Rumi poem, even if it’s the most perfect translation, it still doesn’t do justice to the meaning it holds in its original language. It’s really interesting and beautiful. I’m so thankful my mom made me learn the language despite being born in Los Angeles.

Owning your own fashion business is challenging at the best of times, but how have you and your team weathered the storm of a global pandemic?

It’s been challenging. I think 2020 was really the year of the pivot. I think we’ve all learned a lot, namely, that we have to be flexible and always have a backup plan. It’s been empowering to know that we can work from home and still be productive and feel connected over Zoom. It’s definitely expanded our horizons and made us work smarter.

How has this time influenced your approach to design, and what major industry shifts do you see coming out of the pandemic?

It’s made me realize how important space is. When we stopped being able to work at our office, the first thing I did was create space so that I’m able to do what I do from a design standpoint. It’s also been interesting designing things that you don’t think there’s necessarily use for. Oftentimes, I question if there’s any point in making anything other than sweatsuits these days. I feel like the biggest shifts are going to occur in terms of communication and connection to community.

What advice would you give someone looking to get into fashion design?

Do as many internships as possible. I think having the ability to learn from observing someone is the most priceless.

Who are some of the women or men we would find on your mood boards?

Most recently we’ve had Eartha Kitt, Flo-Jo, James Baldwin, Aya Tiff Brown, and Shirin Neshat. 

You have an entire line of incredible apparel, jewelry, and accessories at your fingertips, so I’m curious: What’s the one item on heavy rotation in your wardrobe right now?

Most days, I wear a sweatsuit and a pair of sneakers that make me happy. I bought myself a vintage Rolex Stella this year for my 40th birthday. It’s been a pretty solid staple and makes me feel like I’m on a whole new grown-woman vibe.

You are the new Creative Director for Foot Locker Women. What do you hope to achieve by stepping into this role?

Just the creation of this role is important for a company like Foot Locker and their audience of women. I hope to utilize their platform and reach to create more opportunities for women in every aspect.

You have been designing footwear since the beginning of your career. What footwear trends, in your opinion, are here to stay?

Classics. Companies are always trying to reinvent the wheel, which is a beautiful thing and I love to see it, but the classics will never go out of style.

What sneaker drop are you most looking forward to this year?

I don’t have one yet, but I liked the all-yellow Air Force's Virgil [Abloh] that just debuted on LeBron. Those are clean.

Today, the influence of streetwear culture is inescapable. As a witness to the evolving topography of the fashion industry, it's difficult to deny the shift in favoritism towards designers who can sell $500 logo T-shirts just as well as an immaculately tailored suit. A few years ago, the idea of a self-taught designer with little to no formal training helming a storied fashion house would sound almost implausible, but as the recent installments of Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton and Matthew Williams at Givenchy shows, streetwear is king.

Last year, Supreme was valued at $1 billion, making it the first streetwear brand to do so—showing the world that streetwear is a bona-fide force to be reckoned with, but the faces pictured wearing those four-figure sweatsuits and exclusive sneaker drops don't reflect the history of the culture I grew up knowing.

It's easy to get swept up in the allure of high-priced bomber jackets and designer bucket hats, but at its origins, streetwear was a mode of dress born out of necessity and generational defiance in Black and Brown communities. Looking at the mass of visual campaigns from streetwear adjacent publications and brands, I run into the same trope of the commercially viable female sneakerhead: often racially ambiguous, with loose curls and the modelesque physique to match. It's rare to see a representation of the Black women I knew who were first in line to buy the latest pair of Nikes. You'd almost forget that Black women like Mary J Blige, Misa Hylton, and SWV were some of the trailblazers of the culture who made wearing oversize fits and chunky gold jewelry cool. Frankly, there would be no streetwear today as we know it without the trendsetting influence of these women and others like them.

More and more as I make my way through the industry, the connection between its origins and the marketed appeal of today seems to slowly erode. The ubiquitous presence of its Black founding mothers doesn't feel as celebrated or acknowledged as their male counterparts. Part of the process of emphasizing the contributions of Black women into this narrative includes an honest discussion about what streetwear is today and where it's going. In an effort to acknowledge and place Black women back into the streetwear narrative, I wanted to speak to some of the tastemakers working to change the industry from the ground up. Ahead you'll hear from three Black women on the state of streetwear, their fashion icons, and what they're doing to shift the conversation.

Sandrine Charles wears several hats these days. A veteran of the PR world, Charles has counted some of the biggest names in streetwear including Kith, Noah, Aimé Leon Dore, and October's Very Own as clients. After launching her own public relations agency in 2015, she now devotes her time to running the Black in Fashion Council, an organization she co-founded with Lindsay Peoples, that aims to build connections and resources for Black fashion professionals. 

What are some of your earliest memories of streetwear?

My first introduction was in the late '90s/early 2000s, sneaking to watch BET. Knowing how I grew up as a first-generation Caribbean American, I wasn't even allowed to watch BET or MTV, so everything I learned about streetwear wasn't necessarily through all of the iconic stylists from the past, but from watching rap music videos. I was noticing all the brands like the FUBUs and the Baby Phats of the world, going, "Okay, that's what I need to be wearing. That's what I need to be buying." My school was very preppy in a suburban neighborhood, so it was different to incorporate those types of styles at the time. 

You worked closely with a lot of streetwear brands in the PR industry. How did that change your style?

After coming to New York City for college, my style started evolving through my experience working at various PR agencies and internships. I was also influenced by women like Misa Hylton, who is now an advisor for the Black in Fashion Council and just someone that I truly look up to and admire, and Vashtie, who I frequently saw a lot in SoHo since I lived in Tribeca at the time. Essentially, my evolution towards streetwear was through firsthand accounts because I didn't have the luxury of being exposed to that culture growing up.

Black women have a hand in setting so many trends in fashion. Did you see that type of representation working in PR?

When I was working at PR agencies, I definitely was the Black girl or the Black person. Once I got to a specific agency later on in my career, I was lucky enough to have a diverse team, and the brands they gave me were what they called the "streetwear" brands of the agency. From then, as I started owning different clients, like working with Ronnie to open Kith and launch Kith Treats, that's when people started to know me. But looking back, maybe not enough opportunities were given to us to be apart of streetwear in that way. However, I have now noticed an increased presence of Black publicists in the field. Years ago, I was always in L.A. and New York working on all of these big collaborations which also exposed me to so many different people from other areas in the fashion industry like Bephie from Union, who I looked up to, and so many more people you wouldn't necessarily know until you get familiar with the industry. After seeing this I'm like, "Okay, there is another me here" or "There is another me there."

Speaking of women like Kimora Lee Simmons with Baby Phat and Angela and Vanessa Simmons with Pastry, why do you think we don't see that kind of big brand ownership from Black women within the streetwear space?

That's a great question, and I really don't know. Before recent events, I don't think that people were investing in Black women or Black people, in general, so when we ask questions like, "Where were the investors? Where were these people to start a new brand?" I think a lot of these people were just trying to stay above water or work at companies where they knew that if they worked for a certain name they could elevate in the industry. That was really all that was said as "possible" at the time. I'm not saying that people couldn't go out on their own, but if you watch the trajectory of previous urban wear or streetwear brands, you may be a little bit more hesitant. There are so many amazing people who have worked for the FUBUs, Karl Kanis and the Baby Phats of the world who are in different spaces of the fashion industry today and still have a wealth of knowledge or enough ideas to start their own brand. And maybe they are or maybe they aren't okay with it. Starting a brand is expensive at a specific level, and at that point in time, it was different. I mean, now we have so many Black-owned brands—even over the course of a decade—who are turning pieces and collections every single season, but was it possible 15, 20 years ago? Not really. I'm not sure about the specifics, like what the cost of goods was, where they were sourcing their materials, how much it costs if they were being supported, or whether they were working two jobs to get there, or if there was like a silent investor, etc. However, we do know the ones that were around growing up impacted and inspired a lot of the non-Black-owned streetwear brands today. 

What changes do you think are necessary from the industry in order to change this?

I think it has to just be a conscious decision. You have to want to help Black women. You want to also elevate them in spaces where their talents and their resources will be recognized and utilized. And not just because we're in a space in time where people feel like they have to do it. It's so easy to find new talent now. I have met so many Black women working behind the scenes in this industry I wouldn't have otherwise known. Last year I had a call with a very well-known streetwear brand, and I was so shocked to know that the girl I was talking to on the other side of the phone, who was their publicist, was a Black woman. I said to her, "You're Black? Oh my god!" It was nice to see. So it's very interesting that as we continue to grow. People are getting these positions and their footing in different spaces.

Are there any Black women in streetwear that you currently look up to, or women-owned brands you have your eye on right now?

Well, Beth Gibbs or Bephie who owns Bephies Beauty Supply as well as Estelle Babenzien who is co-owner of Noah. Then you have so many new designers who are coming out through the Council that I'm getting to know like Sade who founded EDAS. I also like Glazed NYC too. I think there are so many veterans and newcomers that we'll see one hundred percent more growth. By the time I retire, I just hope that I can pass on the baton to Black girls either working for me or some of my mentees or just other Black women, in general. I hope that as an industry we continue to champion Black women in different spaces of fashion. And for me, whether it be streetwear or elevated streetwear or footwear, I think there are more spaces and chances that we should definitely continue to work in that wheelhouse where we are not in competition with each other. There doesn't need to be one at the table. 

Jourdan Ash is a journalist and content producer with a formidable knowledge of the ins and out of streetwear culture. Born from an edit test, her digital platform, True to Us, is focused on centering and normalizing Black women as the foundations of streetwear and sneaker culture. The brand also recently launched a collection of sweatsuits and T-shirts. Before becoming a music journalist, Ash worked for the likes of Complex, Married to the Mob and Vashtie Kola. Read ahead to hear her thoughts on what it's like to be a Black woman in the business.

What are some of your earliest memories of streetwear?

I've always been a solid streetwear/sneaker baby because my name is Jourdan. My mom had me when she was in her twenties, so I was always "Jourdan in Jordans," and that was the look. My mom was also my style icon. She played the tomboy and the relaxed, baggy '90s style very well, so even pieces that she had in her twenties, those are pieces that are now mine. When I got older, I was a Karmaloop girl. I was also into Rocawear and Baby Phat, but when it came down to me buying my own stuff, it was Karmaloop for me all the way. There's a store in SoHo called Michael K, and I was in there every week. 

It’s really weird because I ended up interning for every streetwear brand or store that I was in love with growing up. Married to the Mob was one of my favorites as a teenager, and I interned for them right after college. On the flip side, I wore Stüssy all throughout high school, but I didn't really get into Supreme until college. It was all about finding what I liked and knowing how to make it my own because I went to a high school where we had to wear a uniform almost every day. The only time we had to show off was on our dress-down days, and when those days came around, I made sure that I had on my fresh Married to the Mob with some H&M jeans and Dunks with the shoelace headband.

What was the moment that lead to the creation of True to Us?

A friend who works in journalism sent me a DM about a publication doing another podcast of the same show they already have that only features men. Right then, it was just like one of those moments where I realized I could be the change that I want to see, or I could complain about it. There are a lot of times where it's like, "I am being the change that I want to see, and I'm kind of tired," but it's also like, "What's stopping me?" In journalism, they sort of teach you that you have to have your name associated with a publication to succeed, but as the pandemic showed us, that’s not true. So many people I know have used their voices during the pandemic. Inspired by that, I did what I knew how to do best: I created my community. It was more so just bringing all of my people together because these were conversations I was already having separately with my homegirls on Twitter or in small Nike meetings. I was just bringing them all together in one place with True to Us.

What were some of those conversations brought up?

I think it's more so that the story that is being told or at least marketed within the streetwear and sneaker space is that Black women look one particular way. That's the biggest thing that I hear on and on, time and time again. I can ask the same question from different Black women, and they'll always say the same thing: "There's always this one girl with big curly hair who you're not sure if she's Black. Like she could be Black, but it's ambiguous. It feels like a token. She doesn't represent me and what I look like, or what my neighbor looks like." The issue is that she doesn't represent most Black women. It's like we're in this marketing space where brands think they can have one Black girl in their ads and that's completely cool. That's not enough. It’s the same rhetoric for everything—it's not enough that only one store did a women's exclusive drop for the recently released silver Jordan 1s. It's like women have to fight constantly to be seen and heard within the streetwear and sneaker industry. And that's why True to Us highlights different Black content creators in these spaces. We talk to different Black women in different areas of these industries.

You've been able to work at some really popular streetwear companies. Did you see many Black women in these spaces?

I actually didn't see that at all. In most places I interned, I was the only Black woman. At one of my first internships, I was one of two Black women, and I remember just working there fresh out of college on my days off from my full-time job. I was interning for a designer and DJ, and another streetwear brand at the same time, and none of them paid me. At first, it was like, "Okay, cool, I don't mind not getting paid if I'm getting some type of learning from it." And so I remember just sitting at my internship, you know, just waiting for something–and this is when that company was in its heyday–but I didn't learn anything. And then I just realized, you know, I'm spending my days off here to learn something about streetwear, to learn something about being a boss and I'm not really doing anything. So I left.

After that, I started interning for a well-known DJ and creative within the streetwear indsutry working on my lunch breaks for her. It was the same thing, though. I was just waiting for this moment where it's like we have this heart-to-heart and you tell me what it's like to be a Black woman in streetwear, to be one of the first Black women to have her own Jordan. Like, I was just waiting. I often found myself waiting on those moments that I try to give people through True to Us now. 

What did you learn about that experience?

I feel like I wasted a lot of time. I took the journalism route into streetwear because nobody ever told me how to get into that business. Nobody ever came to our high school during job fairs and said, "Hey, this is how you get into the industry. Even if you don't want to design your own stuff, this is how you do it. Even if you want to work on the marketing end, this is how you do it," and no one was ever there to tell us that. So for me, I was looking at Complex, I was looking at The Fader and I'm like, "Okay, well, this is my end." I got to intern with my streetwear idol and at cool brands I loved growing up, but I didn't learn anything. So I stepped away from it.

How do you view the industry now? 

I didn't really see too many Black women, although I think right now, I do see a lot of us. Some of these women come to me, and I still feel like I'm that little kid interning. I'm just still learning and soaking up so much. I just wish I had this six or seven years ago because I think I would have had a different path, or I would have come to this journey sooner. 

Which changes do you think need to be made in order for the streetwear and sneaker industry to increase diversity?

I need everyone to make right on all those goals and deeds that they put in place in June. When there was this social reckoning, and everybody was scrambling for how to support the Black community, right now especially during Black History Month, I need to see those receipts. That means you're actually doing the work. That means you're not just picking a Melody Ehsani for a collaboration, but digging deep into the girl who was always like Melody, who makes her own iterations of sweatpants or sketches sneakers on the train—it's tapping into that girl and tapping into that talent. Can we have another Aleali Mai sneaker? Absolutely. But can we have a sneaker made by the girl who looks up to Aleali Mai who will not design the same exact sneaker as her? Absolutely; there's space for both. It's just a matter of brands actually doing the work. That means, you know, not just picking models who are your friends, it means we're digging deep and we're not simply choosing the same five girls to appear in campaigns or events. Because you know, after a while, it's like, you look at marketing, and realize it's just the same girl. Or it's the same-looking girl but with a different name. 

What's something streetwear brands can learn from True to Us?

I don't think that these big brands are talking to people. They're not talking to the consumer. They're not talking to, you know, the girl who changes from her Hush Puppies into her Nike's on her way to school because she has to look fly in her uniform. They're not talking to these people who have the stories. I learned so much just by talking to people and sharing.

Banna Girmay is the woman behind the streetwear label Mama Banna, where she integrates elements of her Eritrean culture into its creative direction and designs. Her path to creating her own label was far from conventional. She worked as a lawyer for seven years before dabbling into her first love, fashion. Hear how Girmay built her own label and why she thinks more Black women deserve credit in the industry.

What compelled you to forge into fashion and create Mama Banna?

I first started taking sewing classes, and then little by little, the idea grew. It basically stemmed from me being a lover of fashion. I always felt that fashion was a way for me to express my beliefs and my cultural heritage, and looking at other brands out there, I just felt like my Eritrean background was notably missing from my fashion choices. There was really nowhere for me to go to kind of reflect that part of myself. Simultaneously, I noticed a lot of Eritrean and Ethiopian artists and creatives popping up, so I felt like there was probably a need for this type of fashion brand outside of myself, for the larger community.

Was streetwear a presence in your Eritrean upbringing or within the Eritrean community?

Back home, whenever we're called to wear a cultural dress, it's always for weddings or formal events, and we wear dresses. That's really the only way to express or retrain culture through fashion. Streetwear was not a thing at all. So yeah, that's also part of it. The whole idea behind Mama Banna was that I wanted to be able to wear stuff that reflected my cultural heritage, and not only during weddings.

I noticed that you included Brooklyn, Amara, and L.A. in your Instagram bio. Do you spend time in all of these places?

I included all three cities—Asmara, Brooklyn, and L.A.—in the brand's Instagram bio on purpose. I noticed that a lot of Black people have been going to the continent recently, and I would really love for us to have a tri-coastal lifestyle where we have another—or multiple coasts—that we can consider major creative hubs in Africa. I think that will be the future, the wave of more people going back to the continent will be so much stronger.

Obviously, with the pandemic, there are so many more people moving back home and as those people start integrating, like having their full lives out there more and more, I think there will be more reason to go visit. That was also part of the idea with Mama Banna. I'm from L.A. and Eritrea is on the East Coast of Africa right next to the Red Sea, so I see a lot of parallels between the coastal cultures. I didn't feel like African culture was really associated with a coastal culture that often even though there's this whole entire continent with multiple coasts. So that's something I hope helps to bridge the gap. I don't see why that can't also be part of the lifestyle.

Do any other streetwear brands inspire you?

I'm really inspired by Stüssy. I love how they have stuck to what they knew best, and everything they do is just beautiful. There's also this pride in wearing just a plain shirt that says Stüssy on it, in a different way than I think wearing a Supreme shirt does. You know when someone is wearing a Stussy shirt, it really feels like they are representing a certain belief system or values—like there's something with integrity behind it. And I look up to that and their ability to maintain that over so many years. I hope that one day, or even today too, that if someone were to be wearing Mama Banna or just mention Mama Banna that people would remember the values associated with that. I'd consider that aspect really important to me for my brand aside from the aesthetics. 

Everything from Mama Bana is self-funded and everything made is reinvested back into the business. Anything that's sustainable or lives for a long time I believe is built brick by brick, person by person, so even when I get just one new order or ten new orders from people I've never met and who really resonates with the brand, it really makes me feel like I'm building it right. The reaction has also been really beautiful from the community; I get messages all the time like, "Keep going," "Thank you so much for doing this for us," and "I've never seen anything like this before." I just think putting attention back into your own culture is a powerful thing to do because all of our stuff is cool. It just takes someone to really dig and present it in a certain way.

What changes would you like to see within the streetwear industry?

Definitely in streetwear, particularly, hype beast culture comes with the territory, but this fast-fashion approach to streetwear makes a lot of the pieces feel kind of empty. It just feels like all aesthetics rather than what streetwear was originally meant to do, to reflect a culture or a group of people and be something that everyone believes in. I would like to see people, not buy into that kind of emptiness of some of the drops that I'm seeing, and hope for more out of the brands rather than just buy a T-shirt because it's really cool and that's it. I want you to tell me a story or use the clothing in a subversive way, to express something. Everyone is kind of looking to make a statement with what they wear and use that real estate to really tell a story or project their own personal beliefs. And I just want that more from brands.

Luxury fashion using streetwear is also like this new territory because to me, the nature of streetwear is that it is accessible to people. It seems a bit contradictory to charge $1000 for a T-shirt that probably costs you like $5 to produce. I understand the concept of supply and demand, but I'm not quite sure how that will play out in the industry. 

One of the things that comes up a lot for me is that I don't see a lot of Black women at the forefront of big streetwear labels, getting the same type of recognition as say a Supreme. Is that something you feel in the business?

It feels like this happens a lot. It's like when Black people do it, it's called "urban," but if white people do it, it's called "streetwear." Or like with Justin Bieber, it was called "pop music," but when a Black artist does it, it's called "R&B." It's unfortunate that I don't really see many Black women in the streetwear space even though it was born from Black women.

Chalk it up to the "chill" lifestyle or the creatives flocking out West, but Los Angeles is in the middle of an athleisure renaissance. The city is chock-full of indie brands who are putting their own twists on the casual classics already spilling out of your dresser drawers. Born x Raised traces its roots back to the old days of L.A. and focuses on the city's history, having tapped cool models and insiders including Paloma Elsesser to pose for the brand.

With a name like Madhappy, you can assume that this California label is all about making wearers feels good, and you'd be right. A mix of cozy-casual pieces, the brand is slowly but surely building up a following.

RipNDip

While RipNDip's roots trace back to 2009 (and Orlando, Florida) the brand is now L.A.-based and offering a cheeky (and cat-filled) collection of sportswear and shoes.

Over the past year, streetwear has cemented itself into our closets. Drumroll, please… there's a new trend that's reigning "supreme" among teenagers. According to a recent survey conducted by Piper Jaffray, teens are very much into streetwear labels—i.e., Supreme, Adidas, and Vans, to name a few—and hence, the streetwear trend (more info about the history of streetwear can be found here).

As Business of Fashion reported from the survey, the demand for clothing and shoes that give off that classic "street" feel has skyrocketed. "Adidas cracked the top 10 for the first time among teens … while Supreme rose from 10th place last fall to 7th in the latest survey," per BoF.

In the footwear group, Vans saw the biggest increase, jumping "from the preferred choice of 9% of teens a year ago to 16% in the spring survey."

The reason behind these gains that are particularly in the footwear category? Erinn Murphy, senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray and co-author of the report, shared with BoF that "both Vans and Adidas have this 'open-source' platform where they allow pop culture to help guide and influence how they are positioned with the consumer today. Having a very collaborative environment when it comes to the softer side of brands is very important."
