For nearly an hour, I waited for Stella McCartney's show to begin, and tuning in via livestream meant that I watched the screen flash the words "Come Together" more times than I could count instead of mixing and mingling with the A-list crowd. In anticipation for the show's start, I had a moment to wonder what it might mean for this collection. My mind immediately went to boho, and I thought, "Oh no, that might be too obvious," and then I landed on the fact that, in today's climate, we really do need to come together. McCartney gave us a runway show that did just that, starting off with Helen Mirren reading the lyrics to The Beatles' "Come Together" as spoken word poetry.

In recent collections, McCartney has had a way of putting an elevated take on the office siren movement. Her current collection is the type of thing Gisele Bündchen's character in The Devil Wears Prada would be all over. It's workwear that exudes fashion person, and the designer always finds a way to remix the classics. This corporate-chic attire was beautifully juxtaposed with evening looks that would make any red carpet photographer start snapping. Amelia Gray Hamlin, in a black structured minidress, led the final walk, and Alex Consani closed out the show in a flurry of feathers. You're going to want to take a closer look at each and every moment this runway had to offer, but I'm just here to tell you about the trends that shouldn't be missed.

1. Deconstructed Workwear

Corporate dressing gets rebellious at McCartney with what I'm calling deconstructed workwear. If you grew up battling dress code violations, you already know the drill. Think classic double-breasted jackets cut away at the sides and tailoring styled purposefully unbuttoned and undone. It's workwear, but not as HR intended—menswear codes turned playful, undone, and just a little subversive. This interplay of sharp structure and casual nonchalance defines the brand's 2026 era, and I'm here for it.

2. Party on Top

The focus was firmly above the waist this season, where statement tops stole the spotlight while pared-back bottoms played supporting roles. Sequined shirting, corseted draping, and airy crinoline hems brought the drama, often paired with something as simple as a black miniskirt or the brand's new wave of denim. But these jeans weren't just cool—they were groundbreaking. They were cut from a new material that literally absorbs and neutralizes pollutants in the air, and McCartney turned a simple jeans-and-a-top formula into both a party-ready and planet-saving statement.

3. Texture Play

This was a collection you wanted to reach out and touch. Stella McCartney's iconic faux fur–trimmed hemlines made an appearance, and bags dripped in fringe gave a playful energy. One, in particular, that reminded me of confetti stood out the most. Meanwhile, crinkled satin and bold tops made texture feel polished and almost invisible. The final looks were all about "feathers" that weren't feathers at all. They were a sustainable stand-in that looked just as dramatic while floating down the runway. Stella McCartney reminded us that texture isn't just a detail—it's the exclamation point.

4. Cool Girl Prep

Imagine your school uniform all grown up with a Stella McCartney–approved edge. Polos were layered under more polos, button-downs were styled loose and a little undone, and tennis-style poplin skirts brought in preppy energy in the chicest way possible. Accessories played into the mood too—the sculptural pumps, roomy totes, and "carry it all" bags felt practical but far from boring. It was prep with an irreverent twist: polished enough for Paris Fashion Week and casual enough to wear off duty.

A friend once told me that I'm much more of a cold-weather dresser than that of a hot one. I prefer to layer, build up textures and to tie it all together with some wool-content items for good measure. My long-time go-to item of clothing has and will always be a wide-fit pair of trousers with a pleat detail and belt loops. The pub is a place where many a memory is made, where friends come together to discuss new life events and (often) to fawn over one or two excellent outfit choices. Trends come and go, but one thing surely remains constant: Denim never truly goes away. The silhouettes and the rises may change (suddenly, everyone is all for low-rise now), but denim is that staple that will always have a place in the fashion conversation. With elegant normcore at the forefront of fall's collections, denim is playing a huge role in reinforcing the wearability factor designers are so readily embracing.

But that's not to say there hasn't been a fair share of out-there denim trends. For one, players such as Y/Project, Blumarine, and Givenchy turned things up a notch with unexpected washes and offbeat and sometimes nostalgic details like brown-washed denim and big brass studs. The twists deviate from the über-approachable trends like loose denim and straight-leg cuts, and even if we don't consider them controversial, they're at least edgy and whimsical. Other designers and brands have joined the fray, leading us to think that a spicier approach to denim will be the status quo for the seasons ahead. In line with the underwear-as-pants runway movement, exposed briefs are heating up as a trend to watch. This has less to do with the denim itself, but this styling has made appearances across the fashion board, popping up at Stella McCartney, Margiela, and Etro. Grab a pair of low-rise jeans and elevated briefs (with a noticeable logo preferably), and let the waist peak out a bit for a double-layered effect. Chances are you already have the ingredients to pull this off, so it's a cool trend that doesn't necessarily involve buying more.

The next iteration of cargo pants is here—they're denim cargo shorts. The first clue this denim trend truly had legs was when Zara released its very own version of Givenchy's cutoff cargo jorts from its S/S 23 collection. Zara's shorts quickly sold out (we even bought pairs of them), but it didn't take long for other retailers to follow suit. For a trend that's pretty divisive, a lot of people are surprisingly on board.

Patinaed Denim

A throwback from the era of Lizzie McGuire and Kitson, brown-washed denim (or patinaed denim as we like to call it) is making a comeback like the gaggle of Y2K trends that have lived new lives in 2023. Not surprisingly, Blumarine was all over this particular faded wash, showcasing it heavily in its S/S 23 collection. There are varying degrees of how much of a patinaed look you can go for. Some denim pieces feature light tints of brown, while others look like a pair of jeans caught in a mudslide. It won't be a wash as universally loved as medium blue, but it's worth trying if you're looking for a fresh and cool approach to denim this season.

Designers famously love to cut up things and reimagine them (we're looking at you, Chitose Abe), so when deconstructed denim started popping up in droves, it felt like a logical next step. Denim pieces that look inside out or sewn together improperly is what the theme is here. The great advantage of this type of statement denim is that you don't need equally strong pieces to coordinate with it. They make for easy outfits that carry maximum impact.

Tailored coats reigned supreme at Khaite. Blazers accompanied nearly every model at Saint Laurent. And classic denim made appearances at both Alaïa and Gucci. That's part of their appeal—not everyone is prepared to walk around their respective cities, go to work, or hang out with friends in the sort of extraordinary ensembles that designers put together every season. Instead, they're meant to be a jumping-off point that buyers and editors can sell pieces of to customers and/or readers. But what happens when you test that theory and actually try to wear exact runway looks out in the real world?

That's what I set forth to find out throughout the month of January. Despite it being winter in New York City, I took five outrageous spring runway looks—from the tights-as-pants Bottega Veneta outfit that Kendall Jenner made famous to those layered T-shirt combos at Miu Miu—for a spin, wearing them at all of the aforementioned locations and more, including Who What Wear's Bryant Park office, the subway, and more.

Ahead, my tales of taking spring 2023's most shocking looks off the runway and into the real world. 

When Bottega Veneta's S/S 23 runway show concluded last September, the most talked-about look, understandably so, was the flannel-and-leather-jeans look worn by Kate Moss. But while I could see that it was iconic, Moss's look wasn't what stood out to me most from the show. Rather, there was one ensemble toward the middle that featured a model wearing nothing but tights and a navy-blue sweater that I immediately saved for later reference. Ever since, I've been slowly but surely introducing this no-pants trend into my repertoire. 

To my surprise, after a few tries, all the weirdness I first felt upon walking outside with only tights on as opposed to pants slipped away. Sure, you might get a few weird looks (as I did when I wore them in the middle of the workday in Bryant Park), but really, it's no different than the way I feel every time I style a very fashion-heavy outfit for a non-fashion occasion. You just have to own it. That, and I found that it helps to load up on accessories as a distraction, which is why I added one of Bottega Veneta's newest handbags, named the Andiamo bag; chunky, silver jewelry from Jenny Bird; and my go-to sunglasses from Linda Farrow. 

Suggestion: Don't just wear tights. Instead, add a pair of full-coverage briefs on top. Trust me, it'll feel a lot more normal than if you skip this step.

I will never underestimate the power of Miuccia Prada, especially after she made the world's tiniest miniskirt go absolutely viral. But even I will admit that when the initial looks from her S/S 23 Miu Miu show debuted, I believed they'd be a bit too hard to pull off. Specifically, the ensembles in question consisted of layered long-sleeve T-shirts worn as super-short minidresses and paired with knee-high sandal-boots. 

If you know me, you can probably guess what I did next, which was try with all my might to figure out how to pull off the look, even if it meant wearing micro T-shirt dresses in the middle of the day in Midtown. The result? A shockingly wearable outfit that, while perhaps not appropriate for a work day, could easily be styled with a long coat for a night out. 

Suggestion: Even if you don't want to wear T-shirts as dresses, you can still get the Miu Miu look by experimenting with layers. Toss on some baggy trousers or jeans with two or three long-sleeve tees of different colors worn on top of each other. It might feel odd at first, but I promise it looks very intentional and cool.

Leggings were all over the S/S 23 runways, but none were more appealing to a former hater of the silhouette than those presented at Stella McCartney's show during London Fashion Week. What I loved about the look—which included black leggings with subtle yellow details, matching yellow heels, a cropped leather bomber jacket, and iridescent sunglasses—was how stylized it made the often boring bottoms appear. So naturally, I took it upon myself to re-create the look with pieces I already owned. 

As opposed to some of the other looks included in this story, every piece of my take on this Stella McCartney outfit came from my closet (or my boyfriend's—the leather bomber is sadly his and not mine). Then again, that's what makes it such a simple, great look. It's only leggings, sandals, and a leather jacket, and honestly, who doesn't already own some variation of the three? 

Suggestion: Find a pair of leggings that feel a bit more dressed up than those styles you wear day in and day out at the gym. Consider them your fashion leggings and store them separately in your wardrobe.

The first item discussed among my fellow Who What Wear editors after Brandon Maxwell debuted his S/S 23 collection during NYFW were the overalls, specifically this leather pair that was styled as pants with a gorgeous, sequin-mesh tank top. I was enamored from afar. It wasn't until I actually wore the look from head to toe, however, that I realized just how special it actually is. 

For starters, the sequin top is very delicate, much like an art piece. It gets the layered look from the white tank top underneath, which despite being aesthetically pretty basic, is probably the most luxurious tank top I've ever put on. Then there are the overalls, which are made entirely of butter soft leather and feature heavy, high-quality hardware. I had expected them to fall down when I folded them over to wear them as they were styled in the show, but to my surprise, they rested perfectly on top of my hips without any need for adjustment. 

Suggestion: Consider this look an excuse to spice up the pieces you already own, like a classic pair of overalls or a white tank top. After all, not everyone can buy off the runway. Most people can, however, use the looks presented there as inspiration.

New York Fashion Week being the first major event during Fashion Month oftentimes means that it's somewhat forgotten by the end, with major designer shows in Milan and Paris surpassing its effects as time goes on. That wasn't the case, however, last season, as the looks that came out of Tory Burch's NYFW show more than stuck with me and the rest of the Who What Wear team. 

From the sheer, embroidered linens and bright handbags to the cropped leggings and scrunched miniskirts, practically every item from the brand's runway collection made an impact on us, me especially. And since the show made so many things I'd normally steer clear of—specifically, leggings and layered miniskirts—appear desirable, I had to try them out for myself.

Though perhaps the hardest look to get right, my Tory Burch–inspired getup was the most rewarding and the one I'm genuinely excited to wear again. To put it all together, I paired a stunning trench from Kallmeyer with a white tee tucked into a red Free People slip dress that I fashioned into a skirt. For the leggings, I chose a java-brown pair from Lululemon that I then styled with red Tory Burch flats and my favorite green Prada bag since, apparently, there's no such thing as too much color.

Suggestion: Don't be afraid to pack on colors in 2023. It might feel unnatural if, like me, you find yourself in black, ivory, gray, and navy 364 days of the year, but I promise it's worth it to just stray a bit from your natural dressing behaviors.

In the world of Formula One—where Rolex sponsors races, Tommy Hilfiger finances teams, and drivers fund tables at the Met Gala—fashion has always played an essential role in the success of the sport. "These two worlds have never been totally apart,” says Rocco Iannone, the creative director of Ferrari’s Milan-based fashion label. "Both are driven by deep passion.”

Yet anyone who follows both F1 and fashion can see that the relationship between the two enterprises has fundamentally changed in recent years. Today, the latter’s role involves more than just a brand name embossed on the side of a car or printed trackside on a safety barrier. It’s personal. These days, fans of a driver may spend as much time watching their performances on the track as they do researching the outfits they wear in the paddock or to media events, if not more. On F1 TikTok, you are just as likely to see a compilation of WAGs’ (wives and girlfriends in F1 speak) looks during a race weekend as you are iconic radio messages by the now-retired 2007 world champion Kimi Räikkönen. When drivers Lando Norris, Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, and Esteban Ocon were featured in Vanity Fair last April, fans flocked to magazine stands around the world not only to read about their lives in the corresponding story, "Netflix, Drive to Survive, and the New Cult of F1 Fandom,” but also to see their lavish ensembles styled by Michael Darlington, from a logo-covered Louis Vuitton peacoat on Norris to a hot-pink Gucci jumpsuit on Ricciardo.

Due in large part to the smash success of Netflix’s docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive as well as the rise of social platforms like TikTok and Twitch, F1 has taken a turn for the democratic, losing its hyper-exclusive reputation. Instead, a younger and largely American audience has paved the way for a new era of F1, where the relationship between it and fashion goes beyond just sponsorships. Drivers are fashion influencers (whether they know it or not); teams are brands, with shows on the fashion-month calendar alongside Prada and Ferragamo; and merch is sold on the secondhand market with as much hype as a pair of Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 550s or Wales Bonner x Adidas Sambas. Whether old-school fans of the sport like it or not, F1 isn’t just about racing anymore. In more ways than one, it’s become about fashion too.

"I have not seen mainstream [fashion] brands dig into the sport, at least not since I started watching, as much as they do now,” says Rashi Gaur, whose Instagram account @hamazinglew, which she started in 2013, has over 20,000 followers. Gaur has been a fan of Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton since 2012 and fashion since, well, forever. Given their shared interest in style—Hamilton has designed collections for Tommy Hilfiger, is the first male ambassador for Valentino’s Di.Vas (Different Values) campaign, and frequently shows up to races in expertly crafted looks—Gaur transitioned the handle in 2018, dedicating it to identifying the driver’s paddock outfits. Basically, it’s F1’s version of @checkthetag, every fashion editor’s source for red carpet credits, but for one especially well-dressed driver. 

For her, it’s the seven-time world champion’s boldness when it comes to dressing that intrigues her most. "The way he expresses himself in high fashion or basic streetwear with confidence is quite inspiring,” she says. "There is no one in the paddock who would dare to opt for such styles due to the conservative mentality that still exists within the sport.” For a long time, Hamilton faced judgment for his involvement in the fashion industry, with critics expressing concerns that it would distract him from his duties on-track. Each new title, however, acted as proof that they were wrong, in turn allowing the driver more freedom to express himself sartorially. 

Until recently, Hamilton was an outlier in the paddock. He donned colorful looks by Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton as well as smaller, often Black-owned labels like Bianca Saunders and Daily Paper while most other drivers wore only their team gear. Similar to the way NBA players have become known for wearing bold ensembles as they arrive at games, Hamilton’s arrival at every race weekend includes a fashion statement, one crafted with the help of image architect Law Roach. "Lewis has always been unafraid to show off his style,” says Gaur. "This has had an influence on other racers, and they have gradually become open to showing off their own personal styles.” For instance, Alfa Romeo rookie Zhou Guanyu arrived in the sport in 2022 and didn’t skip a beat in the style department, showing up right away to races in majority Prada. On a less frequent scale, McLaren driver Ricciardo has recently shown interest in fashion during race weekends, specifically at races in the U.S., like Miami and Austin. In turn, both Zhou and Ricciardo have fan accounts of their own that are dedicated to identifying their outfits. 

According to AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda, who started in F1 in 2021, he gets more questions in his DMs about his outfits during a race weekend than his actual driving. "[I’ll get messages like,] ‘Today’s fashion was really great’ or ‘Where’d you get that from?’” he tells me. From his perspective, fashion is a way for drivers, who spend a majority of their time in racing suits, shoes, and helmets, to express themselves. "As soon as I sit down in an F1 car, you can only characterize me from my helmet,” he says. "You cannot see much about how a person looks outside of a racing car, so fashion is a good way to show your personality, like [how] Lewis does. It also invites another type of fan [into the sport] from outside of racing.”

With increased attention being paid toward their looks, drivers have become more and more sought after by brands, for magazine covers, attendance at fashion shows, and dressing in general. Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has been spotted in the front row at Armani shows, and his teammate Carlos Sainz just attended the Milan Fashion Week presentation for Ferrari, which showcased both drivers’ race suits from the Italian Grand Prix alongside other racing-inspired pieces for spring/summer 2023. The teammates covered GQ’s September cover, dressed in Ferrari and Armani exclusively, in the same month that Hamilton starred on the cover of Vanity Fair, wearing hot-pink Valentino. In June, Gasly dressed in Louis Vuitton from head to toe to attend the brand’s men’s show in Paris, while Zhou did the same at the Prada men’s show in January. 

According to Iannone, having the team’s drivers, Leclerc and Sainz, as brand representatives is invaluable for Ferrari’s fashion brand despite the fact that neither have a background in the industry. "Charles and Carlos are the perfect embodiment of success, strength, and energy and represent the values in which young and older people alike recognize themselves,” he says. "It makes them two top players able to influence consumer choices as well.” Italian sneaker brand P448’s CEO, Wayne Kulkin, came to the same conclusion after collaborating with AlphaTauri drivers Gasly and Tsunoda on custom sneakers that launched ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in September. "[The collection] sold out in 24 hours,” he shares. "And I’ve never had more requests for free shoes in my entire [career].” According to Kulkin, P448 is always looking for new ways to interact with consumers and embracing tactics outside of its normal comfort zone. Teaming up with an F1 team and its drivers hasn’t always been commonplace in fashion, yet the experiment proved successful, making way for similar partnerships in the future. 

As F1 becomes more and more successful internationally and online and its drivers become increasingly involved in the fashion space, trends have also started to shift in the direction of the sport. On the fall/winter 2022 runways, moto- and racing-inspired silhouettes, like padded color-block leather jackets and gloves as well as helmets, appeared at some of fashion month’s most prominent shows, including Dior, Balmain, David Koma, and Coperni. In May, Chanel held its Resort 23 show on the beaches of Monte Carlo, nearby where the iconic Monaco Grand Prix has taken place since 1950. For the collection, Creative Director Virginie Viard designed racing suits and mechanic’s overalls in a glamorized fashion, made of sequins and tweed. She also featured checkered flag patterns and helmets printed with the number five on them. The trend continued the following season, with Ferrari and Stella McCartney both showcasing racing suits in their S/S 23 collections, and brands such as GCDS, Dion Lee, Eytys, Balenciaga, Courrèges, and Diesel all included pieces similar to those worn in motorsport.

Perhaps even more influential are the prominent figures in fashion who’ve been all too ready to embrace the trend. Dua Lipa donned Givenchy racing gear during her recent trip to Japan, and Rosalía wore moto-inspired looks throughout her Motomami World Tour. Content creators Emili Sindlev, Camille Charrière, and Chiara Ferragni have all, too, added to the racing craze with their outfits, leading mass fashion brands like Zara to introduce moto styles of their own to their offerings in recent months. 

Thus far on the fashion circuit, though, many trends have leaned more toward bikercore than specifically F1, but Fashionista editor and F1 fan India Roby is predicting a transition into "motorcore” any day now. "Right now, people are bunching all things motorcycles and race cars into one big trend, but we’ll probably see more people set them apart soon,” she says. "I feel that we’re close to a fashion-F1 breakthrough.” According to Roby, with the hype around the sport currently at an all-time high as we approach the end of the 2022 season and the fifth season of Drive to Survive on its way, the combination of F1 fandom and fan fashion is about to explode. And when it does, she says vintage merch—like Ferrari varsity jackets, one-piece utility jumpsuits, balaclavas, and team-branded caps—will be impossible to miss.

Clearly, anyone who still thinks modern-day F1 starts and stops with on-track racing is sorely mistaken. And as Roby implied, the sport’s connection to the fashion world isn’t on course to end anytime soon. According to Gaur, interest in driver style is the highest it’s been since she launched @hamazinglew. "When I started posting about Lewis back in 2018, I was the only such page in F1 on Instagram,” she says. Now, ID accounts are commonplace for practically every driver as well as their partners, who oftentimes end up influencers themselves. (See Charlotte Siné, Isa Hernáez, and Carmen Montero Mundt for proof.) "Personally, I think this is great to see within a sport which has been so narrow-minded in its ideologies,” says Gaur. F1 is changing and, in turn, becoming more inclusive and far easier to get involved in, especially for fans who didn’t grow up watching races. At the rate we’re moving, it won’t be long before fans start arriving at the sport for the clothes. Once they hear the fast cars, I guarantee they’ll be hooked.

It's been two weeks since the fashion crowd finished yet another month of runway shows, press dinners, presentations, and street style, leaving just enough time for us to settle in and actually evaluate all the collections we just witnessed debut. Speaking for the Who What Wear team, we've spent much of the post–fashion month break online, digitally scanning every last look and categorizing each one into trends so that come spring, we'll be ready for all that's new in the sartorial space. 

Though we'll certainly ramp up the reporting when spring actually arrives, it felt wrong to not give you all a bit of a sneak peek into the trends we've all settled on for next season. So I called on my fellow editors, asking them to gush about the one trend they're backing not only with their words, but their wallets too, once spring rolls around. "We're in the full swing of the '90s fashion resurgence with many cool, minimal pieces recirculating that you could have found in the closet of the late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. On the S/S 23 runways, this momentum continued but the standout piece to know is the tube dress—designed in midi and maxi lengths and cut with slightly loose silhouettes. Metallic fabrics aren't exactly groundbreaking in fashion. Rather, a season without them would be more offputting than one stock full of them. Nonetheless, the selection of gold and silver pieces for spring felt alarmingly fresh and different from all those that have come before. Especially alluring was a knee-length gold car coat from Tory Burch's much-talked-about NYFW show as well as the handful of silver, sequin-covered dresses, tops, and skirts that debuted at Nensi Dojaka in London. Classic yet modern, a metallic accessory, pair of shoes, or trousers can make a big difference, and even better, supply a never-ending source of compliments.

I don't really believe that the world needs more skincare brands. Right now, I feel as though the beauty industry has maxed out on everything it can provide us in terms of skincare. Unless there's a game-changing new innovation, my general opinion is that I don't want to know about any new product. If anyone is going to launch a skincare business in 2022, it better do something that nothing else can. Personally, I'd much prefer it if brands used their resources to educate the skincare consumer honestly instead of investing time and energy into launching more products.

It's safe to say, therefore, that when I first heard fashion designer Stella McCartney was launching a skincare line, my eyes rolled hard. It's not that I don't like Stella McCartney and all she's done for the world of fashion; it's just that I want skincare to be a space reserved for, well, experts. I'm simply just not sure the beautysphere needs any more skincare lines created by people who aren't fully immersed in the science of it all. And when I heard that Stella by Stella McCartney beauty was set to be "rooted in nature," I was fully prepared to never give it a second thought.

But my journalistic instinct got the better of me, and I needed to know more. The truth is I've found Stella McCartney's impact on the fashion industry admirable—her environmental standpoint has really helped shine a light on unsustainable practices and set a precedent for the rest of the industry. So, I thought, if Stella McCartney could make a difference to the world of fashion, what's to say she can't do the same for the beauty industry?

As it turns out, Stella by Stella McCartney skincare is a feat, and I'm genuinely happy about its existence. First of all, let's touch on sustainability. It feels needless to say that the line is vegan and cruelty-free (of course), but beyond that, the collection has also put a ban on over 2000 ingredients in its products due to environmental concerns around their production and extracting (including popular silicones and carbomers, which remain points of contention among environmental experts). Impressively, the packaging itself is created with a reduced number of virgin materials, is recyclable and champions a totally reinvented form of refill with recyclable sachets obtained from certified renewable sources. (Carbon emissions are drastically reduced via shopping refills due to minimised packaging and weight.)

Above all, though, the thing I am most impressed by is the line-up itself. While most skincare brands are keen to sell countless products to us, designed to generate more sales, more money, and as a result more waste, Stella by Stella McCartney is a small, considered line-up of just three products. Fashion and pretty things have always gone hand in hand. The two are practically one and the same. But until designers debuted their fall/winter 2022 collections back in February, the two's connection wasn't quite so obvious to the untrained eye. 

From the overall ubiquity of baby pink—which isn't traditionally included in a fall color palette—to the existence of micro-trends like floral appliqués (at Coperni), draped fabrics (at Stella McCartney), and crystal netting (at Miu Miu), fashion this fall is predicted to be pretty with a capital P. Unless you're one of the few people who hates pretty things, this next bit will be an especially pleasant surprise: You don't have to wait until September to get started on the season's biggest trend.

At smaller brands such as Di Petsa and Khaite and established labels such as Stella McCartney and Loewe, exaggerated drapes reigned supreme for fall, with countless looks featuring billowy fabrics folded and twisted around each other in the prettiest of ways. Of course, the art of draping is hardly new to the fashion scene, but fall's selection felt undoubtedly more intentional and delicate than any drapes showcased in past seasons.

Pretty doesn't even begin to describe the various forms of crystal-netted fabric found at Miu Miu, Christopher Esber, MSGM, Elie Saab, and more for fall. The perfect mix of masculine and feminine tropes—the armor-like silhouette appeals to the more masculine side, and the crystal embellishments err more on the feminine side—this trend is nothing if not aesthetically pleasing.

The lingerie-as-outerwear trend continues for fall with a more elevated and obvious spin compared to how we adopted it during the COVID lockdown. Back then, the lingerie trend mostly consisted of boxer shorts and bras being worn as tops. At most, we let our underwear peep through a sheer fabric or show above the hemline of our jeans. But Burberry, Erdem, Brandon Maxwell, and more took it a step up for fall, entering the boudoir and showcasing vintage-inspired lingerie meant to be worn on top of your clothes as opposed to underneath them.

I still remember when I saw this look from Bottega Veneta for the first time. Shocked by the visual appeal of its translucent sequins and how they displayed the electric-yellow slip underneath, I could tell instantly that it would stir up a major trend. And indeed it has. Showcased at 16Arlington, Nensi Dojaka, and Eckhaus Latta as well, sheer sequins are skyrocketing into popularity due in part to Hailey Bieber and Kate Bosworth, who both already wore the same F/W 22 dress by 16Arlington.

Skirts will, without a shadow of a doubt, play a huge role in our fall wardrobes this year. Mini and maxi styles alone are set to dominate, but there's another silhouette gaining traction for the season that my colleagues and I found prettier and more interesting than the rest of the bunch: full skirts. Reminiscent of those worn in the 1950s, the voluminous A-line skirts found at Brandon Maxwell, Bottega Veneta, and Emilia Wickstead have an inherent vintage and hyper-romantic feel to them, making them a must in any fall wardrobe.

Florals for fall are groundbreaking enough, but tiny floral appliqués? Now that's inventive. Spotted at Coperni, Rodarte, Blumarine, and Alaïa (and those are just the highlights), this 3D trend is heading straight for viral status, especially since Bieber already wore one of Coperni's flower-embellished F/W 22 pieces to a recent Rhode press event.

Translucent clothing is about to hit its prettiest point, mostly thanks to Fendi's F/W 22 collection. Filled with lingerie-like sheer slips and sets, the label's fall offering was designed in pale shades of pink and green and paired with cashmere gloves and furry shawls. Stunning in its simplicity, the translucent trend is going to be huge come September, with the goal being to choose delicate styles and embrace the sheerness of silk and mesh fabrics.

Nanushka was one of the first eco-friendly brands that felt like a seamless addition to my wardrobe. Its pieces, designed by creative director Sandra Sandor, weren't like those of all the other "sustainable brands," which were made of linen and designed in a muted color palette. Instead, Sandor makes shopping consciously as easy as buying pieces that are beautiful, feel amazing, and hit on trends while simultaneously being, for the most part, timeless. (The brand has a dedicated sustainability committee to meet its goal of becoming a completely circular business and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.) With that, when I thought about which brand to test out for this story, Nanushka came to mind immediately. I've purchased pieces from the brand in the past but hadn't invested in anything in a while, so I was excited to see how the designs had advanced IRL. 

When doing stories like this, it's easy to want to pick the buzziest, boldest item from a collection, but I think it's more beneficial to stick with simple, classic items that feel the most wearable for the most people. Because of that, I styled a rib-knit, sleeveless midi dress that buttons up the front and features the cutest exaggerated collar. Really, I could have styled it in so many ways—unbuttoned with pants underneath, paired down with sneakers, etc.—but I settled on a day-to-night look, adding off-white heels and a matching shoulder bag from Wandler, another brand that's working toward more conscious practices.

"Confession: Even though I'm an editor who's always keeping up with trends, I value sustainability over everything else in my wardrobe. So when my fellow editor Eliza pitched our try-on story for the month, I was pumped because I finally was going to get the chance to test-drive a brand I've loved for a long time: Brother Vellies. I love Aurora James's accessory label because it champions African craftsmanship, ethical production, and sustainability; not to mention she's also the founder of the 15 Percent Pledge, which has advocated for racial inclusion across the fashion industry. Coming up: 38 Items That Are as Chic as They Are Sustainable

Each season as fashion month begins, editors, influencers and fashion enthusiasts are bombarded with new-season styles. With four separate cities putting on events and several shows each day, there’s a veritable banquet of looks and designers to keep track of. And while newness is, of course, the name of the game, this season, I found myself experiencing a recurring sense of déjà vu.

In New York, Milan and Paris, several designers and brands sent looks down the runway which felt oddly familiar, immediately conjuring up nostalgia for the early 2000s. Miu Miu created barely-there miniskirts adorned with box pleats and thin belts, a look which Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and every other Y2K It girl heavily invested in back in 2002. Cargo trousers (yes, cargo trousers!) were back on the agenda at Tom Ford, validating the questionable fashion choices I made as a pre-teen. Keyhole cut-outs were seen at LaQuan Smith, Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham, harking back to the red carpet looks spotted on Beyoncé, Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry in the early aughts, and exposed midriffs were seen left, right and centre, reminiscent of the looks pop stars used to sport in music videos and at events.

1. The Micro Miniskirt 

Thigh-grazing skirts were a trend we saw across the board for spring/summer 2022. Though, no brand created them quite as itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny as Miu Miu. The Miuccia Prada–founded label sent models down the runway in low-rise micro minis adorned with thin belts, immediately casting the mind back to Hilton’s heyday, when the heiress was known for wearing almost the exact same look. 

2. The Tassle Crop Top

The moment I saw this Stella McCartney tassel crop top hit the runway, I knew there was something familiar about it. It only took a little bit of googling to discover Britney Spears wore something very similar back in 2002. Crops of all kinds were a wardrobe staple in the early aughts, often paired alongside low-rise jeans for the perfect "jeans and a nice top” look. It seems we’ll be bringing this back for summer 2022.

3. The Peakaboo Dress

The similarities between the two looks and how they are styled below is uncanny, right down to the fur-covered outwear. Is it possible LaQuan Smith had this 2003 Beyoncé look on his mood board? I wouldn’t blame him. We may never know, but you can guarantee we’re about to see a resurgence in this peekaboo cut-out silhouette.

4. Cargo Trousers

As a young girl deprived of the practicality of real pockets on jeans, I can distinctly remember myself living in cargo trousers throughout my pre-teen years. With endorsements from pop stars like Fergie, Spears and Christina Aguilera, they were a bona fide cool-girl investment. Tom Ford has now decided it’s time for the item’s revival, as the designer sent a pair of bright-green cargos down the runway for spring/summer 2022. Of course, the full Y2K-inspired look wouldn’t have been complete without a bare midriff, so Tom Ford styled the trousers alongside a bra top, reminiscent of a look Fergie wore in 2003.

5. The Interesting LBD

The early aughts weren’t all loud prints and miniature hemlines. The era had its own brand of minimalism, depicted so perfectly below by none other than Aniston. The actress wore a black column dress complete with keyhole cut-outs to the 2003 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which captures the feeling of a look Victoria Beckham recently debuted as a part of her S/S 22 collection.

6. Cut-Out Craze

On the topic of cut-outs, Stella McCartney utilised the trend throughout several styles in her latest collection. McCartney’s show featured shoulder and stomach cut-out dresses paraded down the runway in several colours and patterns, and I couldn’t help but notice how similar this felt to the looks Destiny’s Child wore in 2000.

7. The Tie-Up Top

From Christina Aguilera to Rihanna, every pop star of the early aughts had a tie-up-top moment of some description. The detail was often found on the front or side of belly-bearing tops and paired alongside—you guessed it—low-rise jeans. Charlotte Knowles tapped into the style for her S/S 22 show, going all-in on the Y2K vibes, which will no doubt appeal to her very Gen Z fan base.

8. The Red Carpet–Worthy Silhouette

Are you sensing a theme here? Interesting silhouettes and cut-outs were big news in 2003, as evidenced here by Berry’s red carpet gown. The trend will be headlining again in the not-too-distant future, solidified in part by Victoria Beckham’s S/S 22 collection.

9. The Power Suit

Power suits have taken centre stage on the runway for a few seasons now, but for summer 2022, the look will transcend office attire and move into the partywear category. At Fendi and Versace, we saw bold suits paired alongside bra tops, which is an outfit formula TLC championed in the late ’90s.

Keeping up with the denim styles of the moment can feel like a full-time job. In just the span of a year, we've witnessed the resurgence of a number of classic styles, such as early aughts ultra-low-rise pants and '90s-style loose jeans. The brand has been carbon neutral since 2015 and uses sustainable materials, as well as deadstock fabrics and repurposed vintage. 

Next up, the biggest S/S 20 fashion trends you need to know. 

At a first glance, you might think you know everything you need to know about Draya Michele—she has been in the spotlight for quite some time—and can probably recall her days on the reality television show Basketball Wives. But don’t get it twisted: Michele is the definition of what it means to be a multihyphenate creative. She’s an actress, an entrepreneur, a designer, and, in her own words, "a mother first.” But beyond that, Michele is the type of person young women of color look to when searching for a guide on ways to move through the world, and though she’s still figuring it out and her journey has been far from perfect, she’s tenaciously built her life from humble beginnings, on her own terms. If that’s not inspiring, I’m not sure what is. But enough from me. Ahead, you’ll hear from Draya Michele herself about everything from her Revolve collaboration to the evolution of representation in media.

More about Draya Michele: She grew up in Pennsylvania and currently resides in Los Angeles. She is an actress, designer, and ambassador for Savage x Fenty. Michele launched her own size-inclusive swimwear line, Mint Swim, in 2011, and has most recently collaborated on a collection with Revolve. 

You came from humble beginnings and have managed to build yourself from the ground up. What advice would you give your younger self on the journey? 

I would tell my younger self to not get caught up on what you want to do for a career. Everyone doesn’t know what they want to be, and in my 20s, I definitely struggled with it. I didn’t feel like I fully knew until I was about 27, so I tell girls that are younger than me and that are still struggling, that it’s okay to not know. If you feel like you know, then maybe you do—but there are also going to be times where you felt confident about something, and it’s okay to switch if it doesn’t feel right. You may have grown up your whole life thinking you want to be a nurse, and if through learning you realize you don’t want to be one, it’s okay to switch. It’s also okay to be multiple things. You don’t need to be just one thing. I never knew what I was going to be, and now I’m multiple things. So you don’t have to limit yourself to one thing or one path.

As someone who's been part of reality television and chosen to step away, why do you think it's so important as a person of color to be cognizant of the image we choose to both portray and consume within the media landscape? And how do you think we can change the way communities of color are portrayed both on television and beyond? 

I think that over the years, reality television has grown so much—the audience and reach that it has—and when you get to African American shows like the one I was on, there are stereotypes that come with it, and there are people who are not familiar with the black culture that will watch the show and believe that this is what women of color represent, and it’s not the case. I didn’t want to take part in that anymore, because I know as a black woman, we are so much more than that, and there aren’t enough shows that highlight our multitudes. But I do think that times are changing and there are programs being written specifically about women of color that are highlighting us in a better way. We’re playing more doctors, lawyers, teachers, and amazing mothers. Now is the time for women of color directors, writers, producers, to be highlighted and celebrated, and I think it’s only going to get better as time goes on. 

You're biracial and grew up in Pennsylvania. How do you feel, if at all, that has impacted how your approach to style and beauty?

Being that I come from Pennsylvania, I didn’t grow up knowing how to do cool makeup or amazing hair. Where I’m from, you’re beautiful based on how you style your baby hair. And the shiniest lip gloss you could buy is what made you beautiful. So baby hair and lip gloss were as simple and as complex as it got. I learned from a young age that less is more. Sometimes makeup and overstyled hair can be a little too much for me, so I try to be as effortless as I can because that’s how I grew up.  

What inspired you to start designing? 

I’ve always had a love for clothing and all things beautiful and all things expensive. I just dreamed of creating the pieces of clothing I couldn’t afford when I was younger.

What initially led you to create your swimwear line, Mint? 

Mint Swim was an idea that I had when I was in Pennsylvania that I needed and felt I needed deep in my soul to move to L.A. to manifest it. And so that’s exactly what I did. I came to L.A. and I started the line.

What is the story behind your collection Superdown with Revolve? 

I had been working with Revolve for about three years. I had already been wearing many of the brands they carry and loved them, so when they came to me with the opportunity to have a collaboration with their newest line, Superdown, I was completely excited about it. I wanted girls to be able to wear stuff I wear and for it to be my own creations, so the opportunity was perfect. 

What is your approach when it comes to creating clothing? And what’s the inspiration behind Superdown? 

I definitely keep in mind things I like to do. I definitely have a good time and go out. But I also try to keep in mind what’s going on on social media, what the current trends are, and what my followers are asking for. At the end of the day, I’m just designing for the women that follow me and for the woman that’s confident in herself. 

And for spring, is there a specific trend you’re excited for with your own line or in general? 

Well, I started leaning toward pastel colors, which was never really in my color clothing palette before, but I decided to put it in my line as almost a way to force myself to wear it. And I’ve been loving it! In addition to pastels, after February, we move into the festival season in March, and I’m excited about that, as we will start promoting our festival clothing. And that’s a bunch of brighter colors—neons, iridescent, sequins. So I would definitely say I look forward to more color and colorful pieces in the spring.

Can you name one to three other designers who inspire you and why?

I really, really love Victoria Beckham as a person and what she represents as a designer. I’ve really enjoyed seeing the evolution of Rihanna’s career. I’ve been following her since the beginning, and she’s really just this freaking powerhouse. And I’m a fan of Stella McCartney and everything that she and her brand represent with its commitment to sustainability and its use of vegan fabrics.

How would you describe your personal style?

I definitely have two different styles: one for the daytime in which you’ll catch me in a great pair of denim jeans and a neutral color top (whether it's black, white, gray, ivory, beige), and I love a bodysuit-jean combo for the daytime. And for the evening, I like anything with glitz and sparkle and metallics and a lot of blacks and patent leather. I’m definitely dressed to go out at night and very casual during the day.

What’s the one piece every woman needs from day to nighttime? 

The most common answer would be a little black dress, but I’m going to be a rebel and say a little white dress because I don’t abide by the rules around wearing white in fashion. I think you can wear a white dress in every season during the daytime with a cute pair of sneakers, but then you could dress it up for the evening with a different pair of shoes, and it can easily transition.

What are one to three key pieces in your wardrobe you can’t live without? 

I have an amazing Tom Ford leather biker jacket that’s a staple in my wardrobe. I’ve had it for a few years, and the older and more rugged it gets, the better. I also love a really great thigh-high boot. A few years ago, I was way too shy to wear thigh boots; I thought you needed to be a superstar performer or someone ultra famous to wear thigh-high boots, and I just felt like if I wore them, people were going to be like, "Where the heck does she think she’s going?” But now I live in them, and I have a great pair of Saint Laurent ones I wear any chance I get. Finally, my last staple piece is a great bikini. I love anything from my line, Mint Swim. I’ve made really great ones that have lasted over the years. In fact, I don’t buy any new bikinis because I still wear my own, and it's essential to invest in a suit that’s not too trendy, with simple, clean lines that can last you through the years.

You have your go-to wardrobe pieces, but do you have any go-to effortless beauty looks or hairstyles you rely on as a busy mother? 

I love a middle-part low bun. I’m not a fan of high buns. They look great on other people, but I love a low bun. I feel like it just accentuates your face and gives anyone an off-duty model look. 

Do you have any holy-grail beauty products you abide by? 

I love everything from Sunday Riley but swear by their Good Genes serum. It's super concentrated, which is rare because it’s hard to find good, spa-quality products that are also affordable. 

What does your beauty routine look like?

I really think it depends on what’s happening in my life because one day a week, I’m the girl that will give myself an extreme facial at home, or I’ll go get a facial. But I’m also the girl who, after a rough night, will fall asleep with a full face of makeup on, which is bad, but I’m definitely guilty of it. But it all depends on how much time I’ve allotted to care for my skin.

And finally, what’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned, not only from being an entrepreneur but also from being a mother? 

I learned time management. You have to be able to prioritize what’s important to you, and if you’re going to follow your passions, you have to accept that you’re going to be busy, and you’re going to have to prioritize for the things you love most.

Actress Caitriona Balfe’s path to stardom hasn’t exactly been what you’d call traditional. While packing bags for a local charity in her native Ireland, she was scouted by a modeling agent and then made her way to Paris at 19, where she began a modeling career that touched all the major fashion houses.
