If there’s one thing that has shocked my fashion-editor colleagues the most about me, it’s that I don’t currently own a pair of jeans. To be clear, I’ve owned and worn jeans in my lifetime, just not in recent years. Instead, I gravitate toward skirts and dresses, and my summer uniform is no exception.

In the warmer months, I’m drawn to natural materials like cotton and silk because they feel lightweight and breathable in the heat. Some of my most-worn pieces last spring and summer were Cou Cou’s pointelle and cotton-voile midi dresses, along with its matching tank-top-and-knee-length-skirt sets.

As a minimalist dresser who tends to wear a lot of neutrals, I’ve also been looking for ways to incorporate more color into my wardrobe, especially after getting a color analysis from The Color Countess. I found out that I’m a true autumn, which means rich, earthy fall tones suit me best: tomato, orange, terra-cotta, moss green, teal blue, mulberry, and more. While I'll admit that I was initially worried that I'd regret purchasing the bag, it's become one of the most beloved pieces in my wardrobe because it's functional and fun. The shape has all the essential elements you'd want from an everyday bag: a fold-over flap with a magnetic close, a long shoulder strap, and a spacious interior. However, it's still stylish enough to make your everyday staples stand out. Over the last four years, my Tommy Bag has managed to hold up (and surpass) my expectations, as it's retained the same quality since I bought it and still manages to secure me compliments.

Editor Review: Not to be overly nostalgic, but the Moon bag was one of the first styles I bought from Staud. (In case you're wondering, I still have it in my closet.) Of all the bags I've tried from the brand over the years, the Moon Bag is what sold me the quality of Staud's accessories. Not only has my bag maintained mint quality since I bought it in 2021, but the silhouette has become a mainstay in my wardrobe. It's often the saving grace in those moments when I don't want to put extra effort into styling my ensemble for the day, but my staples are missing that extra something. But it's also super pragmatic, as the curved handle can fit cozily over a coat, the interior space can accommodate a book in addition to other essentials (if it's the medium size), and the burgundy color pairs well with just about anything. Frankly, I'm still over the moon about this Staud bag, so I'm sure you will be too.

Style Notes: If there's one thing that Staud is superior at making, it's a shoulder bag—case in point: the Alec Bag. Hear me out: Staud's Alec Bag is a compelling investment because it gives a classic silhouette a subtle contemporary spin. Additionally, the Alec Bag is available in a luxe patent leather (and even embossments) that comes in various shades, making it a style that can be worn from season to season. In short, it's got all the elements that make it a safe long-term investment.

Editor Review: Normally, it doesn't take too much to influence me to buy anything from Staud, but I'll admit it took me a moment to come around to the Alec Bag. It wasn't until my colleague Yusra Siddiqui shared her rave review of the style with me that I was sold on testing it out. Frankly, my only regret is that I waited so long to buy this bag! First off, Staud was in its bag when it came to designing this shape—it not only fits comfortably in the cranny of your armpit, but it boasts a spacious interior with a pocket that has enough room for a book, cardholder, phone, sunglasses, and lip gloss. On top of that, I love that the style comes in a few more "classic" colors, making it easier to carry year-round—although, for the record, I own a snakeskin-embossed version that could rival any neutral. I'm hoping that Staud releases more versions of this style in the future so that I can buy it in other shades—yes, it's that good, friends.

4. Staud Valerie Bag

Size: 7"H x 10"W x 4"D

Material: 100% Suede and leather or cowhide leather

Colorways: Mahogany, chili, ochre, black, tan, white, leopard

Style Notes: Long before every brand jumped on the suede bag trend, Staud released its stunning Valerie Bag in 2022. Editor Review: I'm not going to lie; I was in shambles the first time I saw this bag at the brand's F/W 22 preview. I fell in love with it so much that I ended up buying the style in not one but two different shades (specifically ochre and tan). Maybe that makes me sick, but I don't care because the Valerie bag is so sickeningly good. First, the bag's silhouette is much more sophisticated in person—no simple Instagram shot could ever do it justice. I've tried my fair share of affordable suede accessories, but none have lived up to the quality of the Valerie Bag—the suede is so soft, the leather handle is luxurious, and the interior can fit all the essentials. It's become my go-to bag during the fall and spring, adding just the right amount of luxury to my everyday life.

Man, I do love a wedding. I love the pomp and the circumstance, the happy tears, the gorgeous dresses, the melding of two families… I love it all! As an aging millennial and former bridesmaid, the past few years have been a flurry of RSVPs. This is to say my wedding experience is vast and, as someone who walked down the aisle last year, quite intimate.

Here's the thing about that aforementioned melding of the families: One day, you and your dearly beloved will look at your calendars and realize that you both have relatives getting married sometime during that time warp between Thanksgiving and Christmas on two different continents—yikes. Even though we're nuptial veterans, traveling this extensively so close to the holidays felt daunting.

In the spirit of true partnership, we decided to divide and conquer. My husband took on the task of navigating our travel itineraries (musts: Tim Tams, koalas, beachfront cocktails) while I began the mental gymnastics of packing for two very different climates and cultures ahead of the Punjabi-Australian and Jewish-Colombian celebrations.

First up was my cousin Shareen's big day in Melbourne. Shareen and I first met as flower girls at our aunt's wedding, so seeing her walk down the aisle felt extra special. (Here come those tears again.)

In lieu of a rehearsal dinner, we celebrated the night before the wedding with a sangeet (a Punjabi tradition), a colorful evening of food, dancing, and fun. 

With the bride's blessing, I rewore my own sangeet lehenga, an Indo-Western butter-yellow silk two-piece. Pattern-wise, this set below is the closest to what I wore but comes with pants instead, which are probably easier to dance in than my voluminous skirt.

Peter and I were given the honor of being emcees at the wedding ceremony, so a bold fiery-red gown felt like the call. I sourced this vintage chiffon Halston dress after falling in love with its sari-like draping.

Zipping through several time zones on our return trip, including a night in Singapore and a Narita pit stop for Japanese Kit Kats (if you know, you know), we were finally home… only to empty our suitcases, snuggle our cat, and repack for the balmy beaches of Florida.

As one of the handfuls of California relatives, we were excited to reunite with my husband's largely East Coast–based family at his cousin's wedding. Sadly, the friendly skies had other plans for us. A severe Friday morning delay caused us to land midway through the rehearsal dinner. After weighing our options, jet lag won out, and we ate Serafina takeout in a stupor before crashing hard.

Needless to say, I didn't get to wear my 'fit, a patterned two-piece, but here I am taking it for a spin on my Jamaican honeymoon last year. Anytime I'm in Miami (or, in this case, Miami-adjacent), my impulse is to sex it up. Knowing the festivities would take place in a temple, I was sure to get a second opinion on my look and reconfirm the dress code before packing.

Once I was in the clear, I slipped on a crêpe asymmetrical jumpsuit and went big on gold accessories. The bride's family hails from Colombia, meaning an absolutely ripping dancing floor, so pants were the right call. If your vibe is "more is more," jazz it up with sequins.

As with other areas in life, when it comes to fashion, my sister and I don't always see eye to eye. We aren't polar opposites in our fashion tastes by any means, but I tend to lean into classic, fashion-forward styling, whereas she stays in the trendier Gen Z space. This, of course, seems to reflect our difference in age, as there are seven years between us. If you were to also break down our favorite places to shop, the selections would be similar, especially with Nordstrom, Shopbop, and H&M.

With that in mind, my sister and I set out to do an online-shopping session with the goal of seeing what fall basics we will both be reaching for this season. When I first interviewed at Who What Wear to be an intern, our now editorial director and editor-at-large, Lauren Eggertsen and Nicole Akhtarzad Eshaghpour had asked me what my favorite brands were at the time. I began to list a few brands all over the high-and-low spectrum and of course, Los Angeles label Staud was one of them. The brand was only a few years old at the time, but since then, it's grown a cult following that includes some of the biggest names in the industry. Staud has two brick-and-mortar stores in the country—one in West Hollywood and one in NYC. I, for one, don't live in either of those cities, but as a fan of Staud since its inception, that's not stopping me from having the brand in my wardrobe. So online ordering it is for me.

Staud Jackson Dress

My review: I was drawn to this because red is such a big trend this season, and this dress seemed like the perfect way to embrace it for spring. This is a dress that could easily be dressed up or down. I also liked that the popcorn-textured waist added an extra trend-forward element. I should mention that it has pockets—a major bonus in my book. I think this dress is worth every penny and that you'll wear it over and over.

Staud Cropped Hampton Sweater

My review: I've always loved Staud's Hampton sweater, but I really love the new cropped version. This is the ultimate spring sweater because it's nice and lightweight thanks to the cotton-acrylic construction. This color combination (it comes in two others) is particularly fun, and doesn't it look great with shorts?

Staud Jacob Dress

My review: I don't typically wear formfitting dresses, but if there ever was an opportunity to go outside of my comfort zone, this was the dress to do it with. I especially loved the square neckline, and the color is a dream. I do recommend sizing up in the more fitted pieces in this collection. I could see myself wearing this constantly with an oversize blazer or bomber jacket.

My review: This simple tank is the exact type of thing my spring wardrobe needs. It's a basic that goes with so much of my wardrobe, but it isn't boring. In fact, I'm getting "Chanel cruise collection" vibes. This top is super stretchy, so I definitely wouldn't size up. Oh, and I love the under-$100 price point.

My review: I've been on an extensive search for the perfect fitted blazer, and I've finally found it. This navy blazer is extremely flattering, and I found that it reached its full potential when worn more as a top than a blazer. The material is silky and beautiful but not heavy, so it's ideal for spring.

Staud Morgan Dress

My review: I've had my eye on this pretty dress for weeks, so it was the first item I put on my try-on list. The embroidered fabric is so lovely in person, and the dipped hem added a forward element. It's definitely a cool-girl pink dress. I'd suggest sizing up in this one.

Staud Maxwell Blazer

My review: Denim pieces are having a big moment this spring, so this blazer was a must-try. The fit is a bit oversize, but it also has some structure due to the seaming at the waist. I was surprised by how soft and comfortable the denim was. It's far more polished than a typical denim jacket but just as easy to wear.

Staud Valery Skirt

My review: Ever since Prada casually put skirts with trains on the runway for its S/S 22 collection, I've been drawn to the whimsical trend. This Staud skirt has a tiny slit and dramatic bow, but it can actually veer casual if you style it with basics and flats as I did. It's a really fun piece that I'm positive will get tons of compliments. This is another one I'd size up in.

When Beyoncé tells you she's exiling her Birkin bags to storage, you listen. "This Telfar bag imported, Birkins, them shits in storage," she repeats on "Summer Renaissance,” the final song from her dance-infused album Renaissance (2022). The Hermès Birkin, which is notoriously hard to get and is infamously one of the most expensive bags in the world, has become a symbol of a certain level of wealth that charters private jets with a money manager on speed dial. 

As most Beyoncé-related things tend to do, such a strong stance on the Birkin bag split the internet, with some agreeing that they’re over the idolization and oversaturation of Birkins while others insist on its timeless credibility. But it's also worth noting that in the lyrics, it's not another glitzy designer that's supposedly supplanted the $10,000 Birkin, but rather, a $200 Telfar bag. 

Though the lyrics may be in jest, it signals something larger happening in the world of luxury: a growing embrace from the obscenely exorbitant to a more "modest" form of luxury. And leading the charge is a burgeoning circuit of brands designing bags that embody the quality construction of their higher-priced counterparts but at roughly half the cost. Thoughtfully designed, this class of midrange luxury bags differs from the affordable leather totes that propelled its predecessors like Coach decades ago. With whimsical shapes and elevated designs, these bags almost feel bespoke—the quality virtually indistinguishable from ones emblazoned with a shiny big-name logo. 

While the higher end of luxury is still a booming business—conglomerates like LVMH and Kering boast strong profits each year, to the tune of $86 billion in LVMH’s case, according to a 2022 report—the aspirational It bag is shifting downmarket. Spending the equivalent of a rent check isn't the point here, and the runaway success of designs like Staud's Moon Bag and BY FAR's Billy Bag has shown that a $400 bag can be every inch as covetable and can galvanize a clan of A-list celebrities just as well a $4000 one. "These brands are nailing trends and make it easy to diversify and perfect my wardrobe more often than if I were to invest in a pricey, luxury accessory," says Shopbop's Head of Accessories, Allison Reilly. "They’re making luxury more attainable."

TikTok has, in part, fueled the fire. After a series of viral videos endorsing its quality over other well-known luxury bags, French accessories label Polène has gone from an unknown to an It brand almost overnight. But Polène is just one of several names to follow this "getting more for less" pathway to mainstream relevance. The brands below are dismantling the status quo of luxury as unattainable. From Paris to London and Seoul, meet the names glamourizing the midrange bag…

Founded: 2016 by Naza Yousefi

Signature Style: The Fortune Cookie

Food-adjacent names aside, Yuzefi isn't coy about having fun. Founded by Naza Yousefi in 2016, the brand hit its stride with perfectly slanted and abstract handbags formed with origami-like precision. In a post-COVID, back-to-the-office world, designers have taken to revisiting the classic, functional work bag, but Yuzefi is more of a play-first approach with styles like the Fortune Cookie—a shoulder bag folded like its namesake—or the Dinner Roll—an oblong mini bag that rivals the best baguettes from Balthazaar (sans the butter).

Now, should utility be first on your list, the Mochi—a winged tote with a delightful cinch in the middle—can bear the brunt of busy workdays just as well as any pragmatic "work bag." Riding on the success of her mood-boosting bags, Yousefi has expanded into clothing, with a range of ready-to-wear pieces that boast a similar playful ethos.

Founded: 2016 by Desiree Kleinen

Signature Style: The Helene Hobo

Desiree Kleinen has been engaging with the concept of quiet luxury long before it became a trending hashtag on TikTok. Kleinen's bags are intentionally understated and low-key—they're almost completely devoid of an identifiable logo, with the exception of a small stamp that bears its brand name. There's no hardware designed into any of Ree Project's styles, but unassuming, they are not. One touch reveals buttery soft leather and expert-level construction that directly challenges if good bags really do need to cost so much. Ree Projects also has the distinction of being one of the few Black-owned bag brands on the market.

Mood: Structured bags grounded in inclusivity

Founded: 2018 by Angela Wang and Shenghao Li

Signature Style: The Twin Frame

Born in New York City, Ratio et Motus is derived from the Latin translation for "sense and emotion." From a gun holster–inspired bag to an attached, double bag called the Twin Frame, the brand dabbles in the dance of contrasts: between hard and soft, structured and fluid, and feminine and masculine. And the New York sensibilities are apparent throughout, like in its latest campaign, which features the bags in urban settings: plopped on a stack of chairs on a sidewalk, and on New Yorkers wearing hoodies on the street. There's a sense that Ratio et Motus is what cool people are actually wearing. Despite the brand's less buttoned-up approach, the bags themselves are made from sustainable Italian calf leather. 

Mood: Less is more

Founded: 2012 by Paulina Liffner von Sydow

Signature Style: The Tulip

Little Liffner has already built somewhat of a cult following—particularly among stylish working women. And Little Lifner's appeal isn't hard to get. They're polished and elegant in that effortless, Scandinavian type of way, making them a perfect pairing for someone who has a calendar full of work appointments by day and a string of parties by night. Most bags—including its famous Tulip Tote—are priced just under $600, an intentional move by founder Paulina Liffner.

"There are lots of more interesting ways to spend a month’s salary than on a handbag," she told Vogue in 2021. Sticking to that ethos means keeping a high standard of quality at a fair price, so it's not difficult to amass a full collection of them.

Mood: Curvy with a hard edge

Founded: 2016 by Heejin Kang

Signature Style: The Toni

Requirements for becoming a part of the Osoi tribe include a quirky sense of style and an appreciation for the nostalgic. The entry point to getting one of Osoi's It bags is $400 (not counting them on sale), a rarity for a popular emerging brand. Its affordability is one pro but it's the saturated leather in dazzling shades of orange and pink, as well as the unusual shapes, that make people want to buy them. A direct translation from the Japanese word for "slow,” Osoi digs into that concept with the aim of creating bags that don't fall out of trend season after season.

For some designers, "timeless” means creating the same boxy tote in an array of basic neutrals, but Osoi isn't afraid to take risks. The bags are chubby, round, and slightly abstract, which makes the act of carrying them a joy.

Founded: 2016 by Stephane Park

Signature Style: The Demi Lune

Take away the logos, the flashy hardware, and distracting patterns and you get Aesther Ekme. The brand is a minimalist's fantasy—the outcome of stripping away the gratuitous and creating more with less. For a brand that's distinctly having a moment, they're ironically anti–It bags, which, according to founder Stephane Park, was the purpose. "A bag shouldn’t overshadow your personal style, it should blend in seamlessly. And on its own, it should be timeless," she told the Scandinavia Standard.

For those that feel alienated by The Row's lofty price point, it's a welcomed alternative. "I get so many questions when I wear my Aesther Ekme bag. Since it's so timeless it supersedes trends and will be in my closet long-term. If you like the Row but you're on a budget, this is the brand for you." says Who What Wear associate fashion editor Sierra Mayhew.

Founded: 2015 by Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto

Signature Style: The Moon Bag

One of the most popular labels defining the midrange space is Staud. Named after former Reformation designer Sarah Staudinger, intrinsic to the Staud DNA is its cheerful approach to trends. Every collection includes some type of bedazzled or beaded style, and the shapes are more cute than conventional, but they're never too trendy that the average consumer feels intimidated to pull off wearing one. Take the Moon Bag—an semicircular structural hobo—which hit such a perfect balance of approachability and eccentricity that the season it released, it was on the arm of every editor during fashion month. Staud's success has now earned it the distinction of being more than an accessory-focused company—it shows regularly on the fashion week calendar with a collection of ready-to-wear pieces.

Mood: Expensive-looking details and versatile shapes

Founded: 2016 by Antoine, Elsa, and Mathieu Mothay

Signature Style: The Numero Dix

Polène has the pedigree of a heritage brand born over a hundred years ago. After actually touching one of its plush leather bags, you'd still think the same. That being said, the French company is barely 10 years old, and it's growing into a cult brand thanks to the chronically online. With 40 million hashtags and counting currently on TikTok, Polène unboxings on the social media app are about as frequent as users sharing their latest Chanel.

While Polène's rise has been gradual, its viral moment can partly be attributed to leather expert Tanner Leatherstein, a popular TikTok creator known for literally cutting up and deconstructing luxury bags to assess their quality. Many well-known designer bags don't pass his test, but Leatherstein gave Polène his seal of recommendation, thus cementing its viral status. "Word of mouth remains the main purchase driver for the brand’s consumers," says founder Antoine Mothay. Modest pricing also helps energized shoppers who are tired of annual price increases and decreasing quality. Mothay credits this to a direct-to-consumer approach. "Everything is done in-house, from design and sourcing to PR and customer service, and our products are sold uniquely in our stores and on our website. We do not work with wholesalers; we have cut out the middleman not only to control the brand image but also to offer our products at the fairest price possible," he says.

Mood: Celerity-adjacent with early noughties influences

Founded: 2016 by Sabina Gyosheva Denitsa Bumbarova and Valentina Ignatova

Signature Style: The Amber Bag

A surefire way to get your brand some exposure in 2023? Get Hailey Bieber or Kendall Jenner to wear it. BY FAR has done that several times. Initially launched with block-heeled boots, in seven years BY FAR has managed to turn itself into a go-to label for millennial, paparazzi-keen celebs, and its growth has been rapid. Just within the past year, it has launched eyewear, a fragrance (with Kendall Jenner starring in the campaign) and opened a flagship store on a prime strip of Melrose in Los Angeles.

But despite the multiple endeavors, trendy It-girl bags are the baseline of what makes the brand so beloved. From purple holographic leather to studded embellished logos, BY FAR's overall aesthetic flirts with the experimental. The bags are usually just big enough to carry a lipstick and a small wallet, true to the small shoulder-bag craze that defined the '90s and early aughts. (Heck, there’s even a bag named after Rachel Green from Friends.) Being devoted to a small bag is a lifestyle, after all.

Mood: Timeless glamour with a hint of edge

Founded: 2017 by Vanissa Antonious and Alan Buanne

Signature Style: The Jupiter

Beloved by fashion editors and worn by stylish women from Paris to New York, Neous—an Alan Buanne and Vanissa Antonious project—is rethinking the meaning of heritage. A rather huge undertaking for a fairly new brand, Neouse has the right idea: great, wearable accessories that are within reach. And it's working. The brand has cracked the code for developing both a successful shoe and handbag line (it's rare for new companies to be equally successful at both), and its bags are everywhere from Net-a-Porter to Shopbop. Although minimalism is Neous's design MO, it doesn't eschew subtle glamourous elements or trend-forward silhouettes like its competitors in the market. 

Mood: Early aughts–Inspired

Price: $ Founded: 2016 by Sungeun Um and Soonyoung Kim

Signature Style: The Besette

Y2K aesthetics are as ubiquitous as oat milk lattes right now. A name that nails it best is Marge Sherwood. The Korean brand is known for cute, little bags that hark back to the days of low-rise pants and bedazzled tees, but it’s never so literal that it feels like a direct rip from the past. Instead, there are interesting details to make them feel modern, such as pink suede or contrast stitching. The Korean brand is sold at stores like Ssense and Urban Outfitters, which is sort of a cool stamp of approval on its own, and naturally, those familiar with the indie brand scene are already all over it.

It should come as no shock to anyone reading this that I like to shop. As well as being a significant aspect of my job as a fashion editor, it's also my favorite pastime, one that I'm lucky enough to partake in quite frequently living in NYC's busiest shopping hub. That said, even I sometimes bore with the same fast-fashion shops, multibrand retailers, and department stores that have lined the streets of SoHo and beyond for years, wishing for some new spots to pop up and keep things interesting.

Luckily, it appears that I'm not the only one who's fed up with the sartorial status quo in America's fashion capital, with some of fashion's coolest brands biting the bullet in the last few years and at last returning to brick-and-mortar life in downtown Manhattan. From minimalist Toteme, known for its blanket coats and elevated basics to Instagram-favorite Staud, a brand beloved for its mid-range handbags and bright-colored dresses, every in-the-know internet brand is taking root in NYC of late.

WHERE: 45 Greene St, New York, NY 10013

Sarah Staudinger's L.A.-based fashion brand Staud opened its doors in NYC in October, celebrating its arrival in the city with a party first in the Greene Street store and later down the street at Felix, where a star-studded guest list danced to music by DJ Sam French to escape the deluge outside. The store itself is just as much a haven as the restaurant was that evening, with warm lights, velvet dressing rooms, and gorgeous pieces galore, all of which will make anyone who steps inside never want to leave. Trust me—they practically had to throw me out. 

Staud has and always will be all about show-stopping pieces that toe the line between aspirational and accessible given the brand's mid-range price range. Take, for example, this shirt-and-skirt duo I tried on, neither of which topped $330, despite looking wildly expensive. The miniskirt appears especially luxe, with its oversize bow detail and train.

Easy wardrobe essentials line the brand's new NYC boutique, with wide-leg trousers and everyday bags like this mini tote style immediately catching my eye. Sure, you can go in and find the perfect wedding guest look no problem. But don't let that fact stop you from stopping by for something a touch more paired down too.

Four words: Always trust sales associates. This backless midi dress wasn't on the floor yet, meaning that I never would've had the immense honor of trying it on without the help of Judy from Staud, who ran into the back room to grab my size and insist I slip it on.

No lie, I haven't stopped talking about this dress and subsequently sharing a link to it to all of my friends since the day I popped into Staud nearly a month ago. Like the aforementioned miniskirt, this deep-V mini features a giant bow train in the back as well as a sequin bralette that can be worn or not worn depending on the vibe.

Emily Bode opened her Lower East Side shop on Hester St. in 2019, three years after launching her eponymous menswear brand. Since, the Emerging Designer of the Year winner's label, derived from tailor-made pieces crafted from vintage materials, has taken over the fashion zeitgeist, and not just in the menswear sector, but the womenswear one too. Though her work can be found at the likes of Moda Operandi, Nordstrom, and MatchesFashion, there's nothing quite like shopping IRL at her Hester St. store, where this time of year, you'll be greeted with pine trees, retro holiday music, and extremely well-dressed clientele and employees. And while you're over there, stop by Bode Tailor Shop where you can pick up a coffee and drop off any garments that need mending, hemming, or shaping.

Just in time for the arrival of New York Fashion Week in September, French fashion label Courrèges made its epic return to SoHo with a futuristic boutique on Grand St. From its wall of rainbow-colored vinyl jackets and miniskirts to the trippy mirrors lining its funhouse-like (in a good and oddly flattering way) dressing rooms, the store is everything you'd expect from the '60s mod brand that's become a fan favorite on TikTok. 

Entering the Courrèges store is more like walking into a museum than a SoHo boutique, though in this case, you can actually touch the art. Better yet, you can put it on and perhaps even buy it.

I couldn't possibly go into Courrèges and leave feeling satisfied without trying on a vinyl jacket and miniskirt. Specifically, I chose a fur-collar jacket in all white and its matching bottom, both of which made me feel like a mix between Edie Sedgwick and Twiggy. And who can complain about that?

To offer her customers a downtown alternative to her brand Kes's Upper West Side store, designer and owner Lia Kes Berman opened a small boutique on West Broadway back in January. Full of silk slip dresses and separates as well as luxe leather and suede outerwear, the cozy shop is perfect for all your last-minute dressing needs, whether it's a date-night dress or a chic topper.

Beloved NYC-based designer Sandy Liang opened her Orchard St. store on the Lower East Side at the tail end of 2020, just down the street from local favorite eateries like Scarr's Pizza and Kiki's as well as new hot spots like Corner Bar and Nine Orchard. Set in a stark space, the open-air store is warmed up with Liang's signature pastel and fluffy apparel, as well as footwear, which just launched in September.

Part retail destination part coffee shop, Nanushka's Wooster Street store in SoHo is everything a wandering shopper could ask for, especially this time of year when the weather starts to take a turn for the dismal and dreary. Covered in soft, neutral shades and padded surfaces, the Budapest-based brand's shop, opened in 2019, will make you want to stay a while, not to mention try on, well, everything. 

Ahead of my recent trip to Aspen, I popped into Nanushka to scan the brand's selection of felt and fringe pieces, all of which would've had me showing up to the Colorado ski town looking just like Kendall Jenner (goals). Especially awe-worthy was this skirt-and-blazer set in soft, cocoa brown.

I've never run to try anything on faster than I did when I spotted this faux-fur biker jacket. Naturally, I had to pair it with Nanushka's cult-favorite faux-leather pants and an equally luxe handbag, both of which only made my statement outerwear shine brighter.

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably already know that I'm a sucker for a maxi skirt, so when I saw this suede option and matching jacket, putting them on was a no-brainer. On top, I added a super-warm black coat to make the outfit a bit less one-dimensional and Nanushka's bag of the moment called the Origami Mini Tote.

If you see someone looking irresistibly chic walking around the city, chances are they're wearing at least one article of clothing from the Swedish fashion brand Toteme. And now that the label has its own store on Mercer Street, said chic passerby likely bought the piece IRL. With high ceilings, bright lights, and eye-catching furniture, the SoHo shop is a perfect place to sit back, relax, and invest in some incredible outerwear that will soon have randoms on the street drooling over your outfit.

South African fashion designer Daniella Kallmeyer has been in the industry for over a decade, first getting a degree at the London College of Fashion before working for established brands like Alexander McQueen and Proenza Schouler and eventually launching her own namesake label in 2012. Her flagship store on the Lower East Side, however, has only been around since 2019, though it's quickly become a staple of the popular downtown neighborhood. Full of handmade furniture, natural skincare products, and minimal, luxe garments, the shop is a must-visit for anyone heading down Orchard Street.

Appearing on camera can inspire stage fright even in the boldest of us. Wondering what to wear for said appearance can be downright nerve-racking! As an actress whose first love was fashion, I’ve always welcomed the opportunity to find character through wardrobe, but I’m not without my missteps. (There was a feather-and-sneezing accident I’d like to pretend never happened.)

Finding an outfit to wear on camera may seem like a tricky task, but it doesn’t have to be. After putting myself on tape dozens of times this last year, I have a few tried-and-true methods for looking good onscreen. You’ve likely heard some advice (Avoid white! Prints are distracting! Note: While I typically gravitate towards oversized button downs, I always choose a fitted option for on-camera. 

A Colorful Cardigan

A burst of color looks beautiful on camera. Throw one of these cardigans over the aforementioned tanks to make an impression.

Delicate Jewelry

I love a layered jewelry look IRL but find it's best to keep accessories to a minimum onscreen.

Textured fabrics add dimension and read well on camera. 

A Hint of Pattern

Wearing pattern on camera can be a controversial topic. Finding ones that strike the right balance of fun and functional will help you stand out.

Despite my best efforts, I am a 34928-tabs-open-at-all-times kinda gal. The alternative might mean banishing any fun finds to purgatory, i.e. my "favorites" (yeah, right) folder. The risk of that seven-layer chocolate cake recipe, DIY hair mask, and article about the health benefits of a nightly glass of red wine (important!) never seeing the light of day again is too high.

My Instagram saves are a different story. Here, there is a method to my madness. Call me Dame Dewey Decimal. I found most of my wedding vendors, brush up on my French, and discover new beauty hacks via long scrolling sessions.

Having all this inspiration at my fingertips has also helped break me out of a closet rut. I've been guilty of "hating everything in my closet" more times than I can count, when I'm really just a reconfiguration or single item away from a whole new vibe. LBBD (Little Black Backless Dress)

I've been obsessed with low-back dresses ever since discovering French actress Mireille Darc (if the name doesn't ring a bell, look her up). Pairing it with a pointy-toe boot lends the whole look a glamorous witchy energy. 

Peekaboo Tights

Peekaboo tights are an exciting way to show off a little skin in colder months. Layering it under a big black coat or fur only amps up the glamour quotient. 

Waistcoat Dressing

I’m a sucker for a waistcoat. Having a well-tailored one on hand is a great alternative to a plain tank or tee. (Also, Santa, if you’re reading this, I’m putting this Chanel bike basket on my Christmas wish list, thanks.) 

A Lydia Tár–Approved Look 

I've been thinking about Lydia Tár since seeing Tár, in part because of Cate Blanchett's tour de force performance but equally because of her incredible wardrobe. I could see her poring over the piano in this menswear-inspired outfit. Plus Neelam's gorgeous curls are a good reminder to give my blow-dryer a break.

The white button-down is giving Sharon Stone at the ’98 Oscars. The zebra-print micro mini is something Paris Hilton would’ve thrown on before hitting Les Deux. A perfect nod to Y2K that's not too on the nose.
