It's been snowing more than usual in New York lately, and I guarantee that I'm not the only person in the city who's been stumped by the precipitation, which usually melts into slush by now but is instead accumulating—a lot. I don't own snow boots nor would I know how to style them if I did. So instead, I've been putting my not-safe-for-snow footwear through the ringer.

Everything changed though when I saw the below photo of Meghan Markle during the 2025 Invictus Games, in which she's wearing the winter boots I'd completely forgotten about in the chicest, most right-now way: tucked into a relaxed, non-skinny pair of white jeans. I've got boots on the brain in a major way, so I've put together a guide to the season's must-know pairs. There are four styles, in particular, that matter most this fall and winter, and to no one's surprise, Sorel's new collection has them all. Classic, flat Chelsea boots made a major comeback last fall, but this year, it's all about styles with a short heel. These ankle boots are arguably the easiest footwear trend to style, whether it's with denim, a sweaterdress, or a miniskirt like you see here. The pleated skirt, argyle sweater-vest, button-down, and exposed socks tap into the school-girl trend that's having a moment right now, but the heeled Chelsea boots make it all feel a bit more polished (read: less "high school uniform").

Lug-sole boots are a fashion-editor favorite, and I can't get enough of them. Sorel makes the coolest version with a block heel, which adds an elevated touch to the otherwise casual footwear style. But the best part is that the boots are two-tone, which makes the lug sole really stand out. I like the idea of leaning into this color-blocking effect with your outfit by wearing a top and bottom in the same colors as the boots. "This is my first fall as a full-time entrepreneur, so I’m looking forward to experimenting with more casual looks—neutral athleisure layers rather than business-casual pieces for the office,” explains Randolph, who recently relocated to Nashville. There’s one particular shoe trend she’s found herself gravitating toward as she readies her closet for the cooler, crisper days to come, and it’s a true classic: lug-sole boots. I’m certainly not averse to a wildly impractical shoe (the jam-packed but incredibly neglected shelves toward the back of my closet can attest to that), but when it comes to boots, I really do prefer a pair that’s made for walking. Especially when that style is also chic enough for a night out dancing, can hang with my 9-to-5 looks during the workweek, and is sturdy enough for everything fall’s unpredictable weather might throw my way.

In an effort to pin down the very best functional yet fashionable boot styles as the new season approaches, I turned to Sreya Halder, a Bay Area–based Stanford student whose inventive work sits at the intersection of art and technology—and whose very cool, very California ’fits have earned her a TikTok following of 409k and counting. The three versatile looks she created are all anchored by her favorite fall-ready boots by Sorel, and they certainly don’t disappoint. So read on, and prepare your shopping carts.

"I wanted to go for a more elevated look with these boots,” she says of this effortless power-suiting moment. "Thanks to their slight heel, I knew they’d work well with wide-leg trousers. I also wanted to stick to a minimalistic, neutral color scheme, so I picked two shades of brown and added a staple black purse that goes with anything. Definitely a going-out look!”

Her Sorel boot of choice proves that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style. "I really value practicality in a shoe, especially when I have to walk everywhere in a big city,” she explains. "I want to make sure I can last several hours in them without complaining that my feet hurt.”

Next up, she’s taking things a bit more casual. Enter: the perfect off-duty look for fall. "This tan color goes so well with denim,” she says of Sorel’s Hi-Line Lace style. As any Californian can attest, fall dressing on the West Coast doesn’t require piling on too many layers—although it doesn’t hurt to keep a nice long-sleeved top around for chillier evenings. "Fall is the best time of year in the Bay,” Halder says. "Lots of sunshine and perfect weather for wearing almost anything.”

Exhibit A: this perfectly laid-back look that starts with her favorite Chelsea boots. "I really love the flare on these faux-leather pants and the way they work with the boots to really elongate my legs,” she says of this laid-back, layered look. "I’m also really into the pop of color here. Blue and black is one of my favorite color combinations!”

I don't know if you've noticed, but sporty, chunky-soled sneakers are taking over right now, and I'm not mad about it in the slightest. There's really nothing I love more than a footwear trend that's actually comfortable. One brand that's doing the trend justice is Sorel. Its sneakers all feature really interesting soles and come in a wide variety of colors, so there's something for everyone.

Content creator and sneaker lover Connie Korenovsky is a fan of the brand's latest styles. She's already proving that sporty sneakers and cropped pants make the coolest outfit combo, especially for those cooler days in late spring. Come summer, I'd swap the pants for a lightweight dress, but for now these three outfits are all I want to wear.

I've been admiring Korenovsky's laid-back, androgynous style from afar for a long time and was excited to get an inside look at her spring and summer wardrobe. She's a sneaker girl through and through because, as she puts it, "sneakers are the most versatile shoe. I can go on a hike, grab coffee, and go out to dinner all in the same shoe." I'm convinced this is true after seeing the first pair she styled from Sorel. Korenovsky jokes that this look is "construction worker meets fashion girl." For me, denim-on-denim looks will never get old. There are always new ways to re-create this outfit combo. In this case, Korenovsky takes cropped, distressed jeans and pairs them with a denim jacket in a similar wash. The baby blue in the sneaker ties it all together. This look is perfect for a chilly day, and that hoodie and beanie will come in handy if spring showers hit. "These sneakers are my favorite out of all the shoes because of the comfort level," Korenovsky says.

The beauty of fashion is expressing yourself," she explains. I really like the way she plays with color in this almost monochromatic look. The pink tongue on the sneakers (you have to love Sorel for thinking of these details!) ties in quite well with the cropped pants and vest without looking like she tried too hard to make it happen. The grey sweatshirt breaks things up a bit, which I'm into. Come summer, I'd just swap the sweatshirt out for a tank in the same shade and keep everything else exactly the same.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm obsessed with footwear. There are currently no fewer than fifty pairs of shoes stacked in my closet, and yet, I'm here to share five new styles that I think are worth buying this season. Denim and sandals for spring may not be groundbreaking—that is, unless those sandals have a retro, sporty vibe going on. "The shoes popped, so I wanted a top that matched to tie it all together."

You can never go wrong with a printed midi dress and sandals. Chunky wedge styles, in particular, are trending for spring. "I love open-toed shoes and having an excuse to get a pedicure," Smith says. So it's fitting that she chose black wedges with white soles to bring out her matching white polish.

This look proves that athletic sneakers can and should be worn with more than just leggings. This 'fit is giving cool off-duty vibes thanks to the simple knit top, high-rise denim shorts, and Sorel sneakers, which Smith says are so comfortable they made her want to go on a long walk.

One of my favorite spring uniforms is a crop top and trousers, and this look is reminding me exactly why. I appreciate that Smith chose another pair of chunky, sporty sandals here to keep the look casual and cool.

I love that Smith stuck to a neutral palette for this casual Friday 'fit, but the shorts bodysuit, uniquely shaped sunnies, and white sneakers with colorful details are still so interesting. "I love how many colors are in the shoes but how they can go with anything," she emphasizes.

Every spring, no matter which trends are popping up at the time, I always return to one specific outfit combo: sandals and a dress. This duo can be re-created in infinite ways and requires minimal additional styling—I truly don't know what more anyone could ask for. This spring, there are two hero sandal styles I'd recommend snagging to level up all of your dress outfits: chunky, sporty sandals and lace-up wedges. 

Both styles are having a big moment in fashion right now. Content creator Karsen Kimball, who can almost always be spotted in a dress, is already wearing these two sandal trends with minis and maxis alike. Kimball's spring style is giving me major vacation vibes. Think relaxed dresses, cool sandals, and pops of color throughout. All the Ways to Wear is a monthly series in which Who What Wear editors, staffers, and friends describe the personal twists they're giving a particular item, style, or trend.

As an elder millennial on TikTok, I often find myself cringing at some of the fashion trends making their way back onto the scene (not to mention the confusion I feel when a new dance move appears on my FYP). But when the algorithm decides to work in my favor, I'll suddenly find a trend that I like, and my faith in the app is restored. This season, I've been spotting lug-sole boots both on TikTok and in my market research. The trend isn't new per se, but this season, lug-sole boots do feel more approachable than they have in years past, and I'm here for it.

Model Nya Grace, content creator Alisha Revel, and fashion designer Maaria Deek are all style superstars on TikTok and have been on my radar since I first discovered their short clips. I was lucky enough to tap the three Gen-Z content creators to put together outfits with their favorite SOREL boots for fall. This season, the footwear brand has created styles that are chic and functional for all of us who lead an unstoppable lifestyle, and it truly shows. I now have a bevy of outfits I want to re-create (plus a running list of boots I need), and I have a feeling you might want to re-create them, too. See the outfits and shop the boots below. 

What's one way you styled your lug-sole boots for fall?

To start off my week, I paired the Sandy Tan Brex Lace Bootie with a cute pair of functional cargo pants and a mini fleece vest to keep myself warm. 

How do these boots help you get through your day, and what makes them so functional?

I live in NYC, and my feet tend to hurt after a long day of walking from casting to casting. But when I wore both the Brex Heel Lace Bootie and the Brex Lace Bootie, my feet felt so cushioned. I also love how the soles are rubber, so if something splashes on them, I can just wipe it off. 

What's your favorite trend of the season, and how do these shoes work with that trend?

I'm currently really into earth tones. I can't stress that enough—I love the natural browns, greens, and oranges we see when the leaves change color. So why not match them? The Brex Heel Lace Bootie in this olive shade was the perfect option to style with a pair of navy flares and a rusty longer coat. I got through my entire day in these, and the compliments kept flowing in.

How did you style your lace-up lug-sole boots?

I wanted to see how these SOREL lace-up boots in chalk would pair with a casual and chic look. I love how effortlessly they match with a vegan-leather 'fit and an easy-going plaid button-up. These boots can really handle anything—style and weather included.

What's your favorite trend of the season?

My favorite trend is oversize boyfriend blazers. A boyfriend blazer is the perfect statement piece to style with these moto-inspired lace-up boots.

How did you style a heeled version of the lug-sole boot?

I wanted to be as trendy and functional as this black and cherry bootie. It never really gets cold in the south, so I paired my favorite biker shorts with the boyfriend blazer to account for the cooler mornings and warmer afternoons. 

What do you love most about the SOREL boots?

The comfort is insane—plain and simple. You'd think the platform would make the Chelsea boots unbearable by the end of the day, but they're just as comfortable as an old pair of sneakers because of the memory EVA footbed. Just genius.

How do these boots help you get through your day, and what makes them so functional?

I work full-time as a corporate fashion designer and do social media on the side. Between fit sessions, social events, and my personal life, I'm on my feet all day. Wearing comfortable and stylish shoes is a must for me. SOREL boots slip on when I'm in a hurry and keep me comfortable all day while complementing all my trendy outfits.

As the year comes to a close, I'm reflecting on some of my favorite outfit combinations I've attempted to put together this year. I went through my fair share of phases—there were the all-knit sets I couldn't stop wearing and the house-dress situation that quickly came to a halt earlier this year. Oh, and for a while, I wore tie-dye five days a week. Thankfully, one look that I've been wearing on repeat since the temps cooled down is a trusted boot-and-pants combo (and so have my co-workers). I've been talking about these SOREL boots for some time now, but I'm here again to tell you that this year is not the time to sleep on chunky-soled shoes. I've had a crush on sneakers with chunky gum soles all summer, so that's naturally just evolved into boots with chunky gum soles for fall and winter.

I'm not sure when it happened, but I'm suddenly very on board with these head-to-toe neutral looks. It's such an easy way to look elevated even when you're really just dressed for comfort.

I'm into the slightly rugged aesthetic. The silhouette feels incredibly of the moment. The comfort level is also top-notch. I could walk miles in them. Oh, and the waterproof aspect means I can wear them with ease all winter long.

I styled the shoes with a turtleneck and puffy jacket because all three items give me all the fall feels. These shoes are super versatile, and that’s what makes them special. If I want to make a trip to the snow this year, I could wear them there, or if I need a cute and comfy look to the grocery store, I can do that, too.

What's your style motto for the rest of 2020?

My style motto for the end of the year is just to be cute, comfy, and confident! You can’t go wrong with those three things incorporated into your look.

This season, I'm embracing a black-and-white color palette, especially if it means there's a little leather (and gray) involved.

I can say that these boots were the statement-maker of my look. I styled them with black jeans and my favorite black puff-sleeve sweater. I started the day in the boots at a local coffee shop and was able to wear my full outfit to drinks that evening. I love that the shoes gave me versatility while being out responsibly.

As we inch closer to the end of the wild ride that has been 2020, it feels like even though we're all collectively stocking up on fall boots and cozy loungewear, we're also spending a little more time than usual reflecting on what we've learned this year. For me? I skipped out on the banana-bread-baking phase (I shouldn't be trusted with a spatula) and instead dedicated myself to learning about new causes that are making an impact on communities across the nation.

Together with SOREL, we reached out to five women who are deeply passionate about and involved in a cause that hits close to home for them. Each of these women is multifaceted: From CEOs to new working moms, they've dedicated themselves to making a change in this world, and they're inspiring me to learn as much as I can about each and every charity. It also really doesn't hurt that these women have exceptional style. (I'll let these five chic neutral looks speak for themselves.) From Britney Nicole, the CEO of The Boss Up and HerStyle Media (along with, you know, hosting a podcast), to Lisa Aidoo, a new mom and realtor who wants to amplify maternal support for Black women, I'm deeply inspired by these ladies. Here at Who What Wear, we're actually so inspired as a company, we're pledging to donate a thousand dollars to each of these charities.

Her Cause: The Loveland Foundation

Tell us about The Loveland Foundation.

The cause I’ve more recently been passionate about is The Loveland Foundation, which serves as a resource for Black women and girls to help support them through therapy and healing processes. They provide fellowships, residency programs, and other powerful initiatives to help continue to drive their mission.

How did you first get involved with the cause and what struck you the most about it?


After learning more about them and how they serve Black women and girls by helping them receive therapy and access to further help their healing process, I knew I had to be a part in any way possible. As a Black woman who has entered the world of therapy for the first time ever this year, I understand the importance of promoting foundations that help make therapy/healing accessible for women in need. This year alone has shown the importance of having initiatives like The Loveland Foundation for those who are still trying to figure out how to adjust to the new normal while continuing to fight against the injustices the BIPOC community faces on a daily basis. The Loveland Foundation makes it possible for Black women and girls to receive therapy support, helps to break generational norms, and creates an impact that will provide healing for generations to come.

How would you describe your personal style and how does it fit into your every day?


My personal style is chic minimalist meets comfy cute. I love to layer bold pieces to make my outfits stand out more, such as a pair of statement boots like this SOREL Chelsea style or a unique handbag, since I tend to gravitate toward neutral colors like beige, black, and white. My days are spent talking to clients or shooting content, so I like to make sure I’m in an outfit that makes me feel confident and comfortable and ready to tackle the day!

Her Cause: Girls Inc.

Tell us about Girls Inc.

I’m incredibly passionate about empowering young people to lead and create positive change. Girls Inc. is on a mission to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Through a combination of mentorship, a pro-girl environment, and research-based programming, they equip girls to lead fulfilling and productive lives, break the cycle of poverty, and become role models in their community.

Do you remember the first time you heard about the cause?

I was first introduced to Girls Inc. through participation in a local charity event. Proceeds from the event were being donated to Girls Inc., so I started to dig deeper into the organization. I immediately became passionate about their mission because it so closely aligned with my values.

How would you describe your personal style and how does it fit into your day to day?

I tend to build my looks around one statement piece, like a pair of chunky SOREL boots. The reason I do this is because I’m always on the go and active, so having a piece that stands out and makes me feel confident takes away the thinking and planning of a whole outfit. I also look for comfort because it helps me wear something throughout work and play.

Her Cause: Black Mamas Matter Alliance

Tell us about Black Mamas Matter Alliance.

The cause I am most passionate about is providing Black women with the maternity support they need during such an intimate time in their lives—a time when support, patience, and understanding is so crucial yet dispersed sparingly to those of darker flesh. Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native women are three-to-four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and this disparity increases with age.

Although my pregnancy experience was entirely blissful, it is unfortunately uncommon for other Black women to say the same, and that has to change. One organization that is doing the daily work against this is Black Mamas Matter Alliance, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to continue my support.

What made you feel like you needed to be involved in something that made a big impact on society?

Giving birth to my son was the most empowering and enlightening experience I have ever had, and I attribute that to the positivity given by my midwife and doula. Every woman deserves that experience and that support, no matter what they look like. It's pretty simple and yet so complicated to combat.

How would you describe your personal style and how does it fit into your day to day?

I am a new mom and a service-providing business owner in Los Angeles, so my style needs to be transitional, simplistic, comfortable, timeless, and adjustable. These SOREL boots help me stay stylish while I'm on the go.

Who: Ivy Coco Maurice, Writer and Model

Her Cause: WalkGoodLA

Tell us about WalkGoodLA.

WalkGoodLA is a community organization my older brother, Etienne Maurice, founded after he heard about the killing of Ahmaud Arbery. My brother himself was a victim of gun violence, and he was inspired to make a difference in our community by fighting and healing in solidarity through the arts, health, and wellness. WalkGoodLA consists of my brother, my cousin, and me.

Describe how you’ve been involved this year?

This pandemic has propelled me to become a leader and give back to my community along with others who are in need of healing. We as a family wanted to offer that to others in need. We offer WalkGood RunGood, which is a weekly 5-K running group that we do every Wednesday, starting at LACMA's Urban Light, as well as free yoga every Sunday at L.A. High Memorial Park. Also, every first Saturday of every month, we do a protest and town-hall rally at L.A. High Memorial Park.

How would you describe your personal style and how does it fit into your day-by-day?

I definitely gravitate towards earth-tone colors, which is why these SOREL boots spoke to me. I love finding my Mom’s vintage tees and outfits because they tell a story about the past and they're part of my legacy. My favorite place to shop is definitely my mother’s closet.

Tell us about Mary's Place.

Living in a region with some of the highest numbers of people experiencing homelessness around the country puts this social issue on the front burner for me. Dozens of other social issues are exacerbated by homelessness, and Mary’s Place is an organization that prioritizes women and families in the Seattle area, which makes Mary’s Place a priority for me, as gender equality and women’s rights are also passions of mine.

What made you feel like you needed to be involved in something that made a big impact on society?

I think 2020, more than ever, has forced us to look outside of ourselves and our own lives and give our attention to those around us. It’s not just the less fortunate that are suffering, it’s our neighbors in the house next door, too. Helping might be donating one coat to a homeless shelter. It might be making a five-dollar donation to a climate-change awareness group. But helping others makes me feel like there is a true purpose to being alive.

How would you describe your personal style and how does it fit into your day to day?

I like to think my style is very accessible, as I try and shop a lot of vintage and gently used items online or at thrift stores to try and lower my fashion carbon footprint. My closet is full of classic, simple pieces like these SOREL boots, but I always try to mix things up by layering textures (always in neutrals) or pairing unexpected items—a leather jacket with a silky skirt is a favorite pairing.

Next, the winter trends four celebs (and their moms!) all agree on. 

We get it: It’s cold outside. So cold, in fact, that you’d probably like to curl up and hibernate, but alas, the workweek trudges on. In other words, if you haven’t yet prepped your wardrobe with cozy footwear that’s comfortable enough for your on-the-go lifestyle but also stylish enough to meet your exacting standards, you’re going to want to get on that ASAP.

We recently spotted the on-trend shoe on city dweller Dana Mannarino, a Free People merchandiser who tells us her fashion preferences have been shaped by the city she calls home. I’ve come up with plenty of excuses to justify buying new shoes, but now that we’re well into October, I’ve got an actual good one… I need footwear that’s stylish and warm. I’ve been on the hunt for shoes I can add to my on-the-go wardrobe, whether it’s a pair of boots I can wear with skinny jeans at home in L.A., or a pair of winter sneakers for when I’m running around NYC on vacation and a snowstorm decides to hit. The new season always nudges me to shop for things that make me feel like the 2.0 version of myself—however, I had so many virtual shopping carts filled to the brim that I didn’t know where to start for fall… Luckily Kat Collings, our esteemed editor in chief, stepped in to help. I caught her right before she left for fashion month to get her advice on what to buy this season; basically, she’s your girl if you’re ready to do some real shopping, and if you want to find secretly practical pieces that ride the fine line between hyper-chic and actually wearable.

Her brilliant method of styling her looks? Dressing from the boot up. Chunky-soled SOREL boots are majorly trending, and Kat’s pairing them with other items that do double- (if not triple-) duty. I’m on the shorter side, so maxi silhouettes (think mid-calf-and-below dresses and coats) are something I tend to shy away from—unless I have a shoe that will give me a nice lift. Head-to-toe leather, whether you opt for real or faux, is undoubtedly one of the biggest trends of the season (and my personal favorite). Whether you’re headed cross-country for Thanksgiving or venturing out on a little weekend road trip, you’ve probably got some sort of travel plans on the books for November. It’s also likely that the forecast wherever you’re headed is looking rather chilly, so I imagine you’re busy looking for suitable travel outfits that are stylish yet comfortable.

My personal pro tip: Always travel in moto boots. The ’90s staple is also a 2018 staple, and they still feel just as necessary as when Courtney Love wore them the first time around. A polished pair means you’re looking on-trend and put together, and when you wear your chunkiest shoe style on your flight, you’re left with more room in your carry-on (essential for an overpacker like myself).

In search of additional tips, I turned to Janelle Marie Lloyd of Wait, You Need This, a fashion blogger I’m always turning to for all things style-related. Specifically, I asked her to show us two staple looks she’ll be traveling in this season (and yes, my fave SOREL moto boots are involved)…

A Little More Profesh

Heading to the airport straight from your last meeting? You need a pulled-together outfit that’s also travel friendly. (Who actually wants to change in an airport bathroom?) For this reason, Lloyd styled an oversize check blazer with a long wool duster coat and her moto boots. It’s business on top and party on the bottom courtesy of these leggings and shoes.

“I don’t wear jeans on flights,” she told us. “Black leggings are a comfy alternative, and they look luxe when styled with cool moto boots. I skipped the sweatshirt and paired mine with a longline fitted blazer and a sleek coat.” Lloyd gets it: anything to avoiding checking a bag.

On the Casual Side

Leggings just not in the plan for you? Totally fine; opt for a relaxed-fit skirt and an oversize knit and you’ll be just as comfortable. If you’re flying home, these moto boots are especially helpful because they’re easy to slip on and off—ideal for airport security. There’s a zipper on the side, which makes taking them on and off a snap. Can we also talk about how cool the white shade of these SOREL moto boots are? It makes any outfit feel fall-appropriate, and it’s a way better alternative than your beat-up sherpa pair (no judgement, though).

Lloyd loves these boots: “They’re fashion meets function,” she shares. We agree, which is why we’re stocking up. Also, I wish I was cool enough to wear a leopard belt bag crossbody like this. Seriously, just look at this outfit! Pinning, saving, and screenshotting for future reference.

One thing commuters know to be true: Whether you’re walking to work or jumping from train to taxi, there’s nothing worse than arriving at work with blisters. As a native Angeleno who has the very West Coast luxury of driving to the office every day, I’ll admit I’m not well acclimated to logging too many steps each day, so on those rare occasions where I have to walk somewhere (sigh), I need shoes that are truly up for the task.

Amanda Hogan, the fashion blogger behind Haus of Hogan, understands me and my walking woes. Given her NYC home base, it’s safe to safe to say she’s got some excellent recommendations, and right now, she tells me she’s been relying chiefly on her SOREL Margo Lace boots. “Too many times I’ve been caught limping around the city because of ill-fitting shoes and heels too high for walking,” she admits. “I like to think I’ve learned my lesson after nine years living in the city.”

While this may feel obvious, how many times have you been tempted to just wear your heels for the sake of not schlepping a tote bag around? Avoid at all costs. Hogan told us she’s had one too many accidents of broken heels, throbbing feet, and general discomfort (a scenario I may be a bit too familiar with myself).

Leather also looks more dressed up than suede does, so if you work in an environment that requires a more polished ensemble, you don’t have to change your shoes once you get to the office. “I tend to dress casual-chic for work, and when you’re running around the city all day, versatility is key,” Hogan explains. Also, let’s face it: Rain-stained suede boots are not a cute look.

Marta of The Style Thesaurus knows how important having a good pair of shoes is, especially living in Manchester. "It rains here all the time, so a good pair of shoes is a must!" she explains. But with juggling a career in the civil service and blogging on the side, Martha has to work extra-hard on her wardrobe, and she admits that there isn't a holy grail—a singular boot style or shoe style—that can do it all when there are so many demands at play. "I don't really believe in one size fits all, so I try to have a few options and not just rely on one pair… My full-time job takes up a lot of my time, and I have to travel. I cannot be walking around in heels, and this is where a good pair of boots come in handy."

And a dull day does call for brighter fashion choices, right?

"I am not sure if the look would have worked with flat boots," explains Marta, confirming what we've often suspected of the longer-line midaxi hem length. Truth is, flatter boots look better with a shorter skirt or full maxi. 

"I think this outfit is the chameleon! I can go out with this look almost anywhere," says Marta. And that's often the joy of a jeans-and-tee look, especially when you add some grown-up boots and a posh coat into the mix. "I can go from day out with friends and family to a date," says Marta, noting that her ensemble also works perfectly fine for a more casual office. 

"Although I want to be casual, I also want to stand out at the same time," says Marta of all of her winter looks pictured here. Sticking to neutral colours with a host of orange (a colour that's popping now, but set to be big in 2019 also) is a safe combination with mix 'n' match accessories and boots that were made for walking.

I have been working in fashion for a while now, and I generally think I have a solid idea of my personal style—but every now and again, a shoe comes along that gets me giddy for new outfits. In case you haven’t heard, fall has finally arrived (yes, even here on the West Coast), and fashion girls around the globe are ready to layer the heck up. As for me, I’m especially excited about the prospect of stowing away the strappy sandals I’ve worn to death the last few months and dusting off my favorite Chelsea boots.

New York City–based fashion girl Tania Cascilla of Darling Tee is in total agreement on that latter point: It’s time to let that fall fashion flag fly, she says. Which is exactly why I charged her with creating three easy fall looks centering around Sorel’s Chelsea Wedge Boots (the type of shoe you can literally walk around in for hours without wincing in pain, she notes).

Best of all, the three looks you’re about to see below are all super easy to re-create—pretty essential for those super-cold days that make getting out of bed on time a bit of a challenge.

1. With a Trench

Right off the bat, Cascilla went for one of my favorite fall looks: a trench-and–Chelsea boot combo. It’s a classic, to be sure, but she’s added a personal touch by adding in a pop of color with her sunglasses. The look feels super chic and elevated, and it consists of pieces you probably already have lying around in your closet. Easy!

2. With Leopard Print

ICYMI (doubtful!), leopard spots are everywhere right now. And given that I’ve always been a fan of the iconic print myself, Cascilla’s second look speaks directly to my soul. “I wear leopard year-round, but since it’s a major trend right now, I decided to make it the focal point of my outfit,” she told me. Add skinny sunglasses and ankle-cropped jeans, and you’ve got the makings of a perfect look for a casual day at the office.

3. With Buffalo Plaid

Another staple print that seems to return season after season? Cozy yet chic buffalo plaid, which Cascilla expertly paired with a simple white tee, distressed vintage-inspired jeans, and her go-to SOREL boots. “This is what I call lumberjack chic,” Cascilla explains. “It’s all about comfort and ease.” (Pretty much exactly what I require of an off-duty weekend look.)

Boots are basically all I can think about right now, especially with all the great trend pieces coming our way for fall. (I’ve spent a lot of time online shopping these last few weeks—part of the job, I swear!) There’s that ’80s-style “my mom had a dress like that” trend I’m super into, as well as the Western-inspired touches and animal prints currently flooding my IG feed. I wanted to show you how my brain has been processing all these amazing new arrivals the last few weeks—and how I’d pair them with three of my favorite boot styles from SOREL. Consider your fall outfit rotation officially set.

Modern Nostalgia

I imagine 1997 Julia Roberts wearing a belted leather jacket like this one on a crisp fall day in NYC (complete with skinny sunglasses). To re-create her tailored vibe, a crisp button-down and straight-leg jeans are all you’ll need. Layer on the leather, and incorporate a touch of ’80s (see: pendant earrings) to make it feel extra special. I’ll be wearing this with the wedge lace-up boots to give my ensemble that extra oomph.

Animal Instincts

Animal print: Get used to seeing it, because it’s so hot right now. Leopard print is a favorite of mine, so I’m really excited it’s back in action for F/W 18. I’ll be styling this wrap dress with lace-up moto boots to give it a little London edge. Finish with statement gold earrings and a faux-croc bucket bag for an on-trend mixed-print look that would make Cher Horowitz jealous.

Cozy Alternatives

I’m a fall girl, and the thought of finally getting to wear a cozy sweater is honestly making me giddy. For a fun, comfortable weekend look, I’m going for a lighter color palette, opting for these Chelsea boots with wide-leg jeans and a muted pink cowl-neck sweater. I’ll also be attempting to pull off this belt bag as a crossbody like all the cool kids.

Off To The Countryside

If the mood strikes on gloomy day and I want to look like I’m low-key wealthy (read: off to spend the weekend in the country), I’ll be opting for plaids and nubby textures. I’ll pair a classic collared knit with an uneven-hemmed plaid skirt and add in these wedge lace-up boots.

City-Girl Classic

And finally, the most classic look of all (and the one I basically live in): a trench with fantastic cropped jeans. For this look, I’ll be reaching again for those white SOREL moto boots and accessorizing with a chic beaded handbag. (We keep spotting the latter on the coolest Scandi girls.) From there, I’ll pull on my trench—bonus points for an oversize, relaxed fit—and leave it unbuttoned.

We’re doing top-to-bottom knits (yes, really) and low-key separates in ’70s-inspired caramel brown, and we’re taking a serious swing at the moto-chic vibe every model seems to have on lock. When it’s super cold out, we’ll be adding a black (and possibly glittery) slouchy sock to create a seamless look that screams “normcore cool.” For a more polished ensemble (that still has a touch of that don’t-mess-with-me vibe), we love a slick blazer layered under a boxy leather jacket. When the temperatures lower, the stakes get higher in the wardrobe department. "The idea is to create looks that mix high/low elements so you feel like you could literally throw on the outfit and be set for whatever the day throws at you,” explains Rosson. She continues, "By using contrasting pieces, these looks are visually interesting and express your style.”

Today she’s showing us how to flip the script on two winter outfits that elevate athleisure and street-chic trends by incorporating interesting shapes and elevated pieces.

Metallic Skirt + Rain Boots + Sweater

A guaranteed way to energize a winter look? Color. It’s easy to regress into the thinking that cold days equal cool and moody dark hues, but not the case here. Start with a metallic skirt reserved for a party and pair it with your tried-and-true zip-up hoodie in the same color family. Top off with a neutral beanie for a just-rolled-out-of-bed vibe that offsets the drama of the skirt. 

One way to ensure you don’t go overboard is with your underlayers; here, Rosson chose cool heeled SOREL rain boots and a chic turtleneck sweater. She adds, "Don’t be afraid of color. Minimalism is in the past. Use prints, vibrant colors, and embellishments to add variety.”

Wedge Boots + Tweed Trousers + Trench Coat

An unconventional pairing, yes, but the tailored silhouette of tweed trousers paired with lace-up wedge boots triggers an interesting play on proportions. The athletic zip-up jacket and the black trench coat give the cozy-but-cool look an ease that makes it perfect for wearing straight into the weekend.

A stylist’s work is never done. Forget about the cushy, glamorous caricature you see in the movies—you know, the one that involves dressing models, rubbing elbows with celebrities, and sipping champagne out of shoes. Not even close. The reality? A stylist is the person grinding through every photo shoot. Constantly on the clock, they’re pulling an outfit together with clients in the wings. Sometimes they even pull the clothes off their own fashionable backs for the sake of a shot. They work weekends, they mend clothes on the fly, and they’re a living, breathing index of the latest trends, designers, and shops.

It’s a tough gig, and breaking into the industry is equally challenging. So, when you’re just starting out, it’s essential to have a great mentor by your side. Iowa native Grace Rosson can attest to that fact: Rosson was selected for the #SORELstyle mentorship program and got the chance to learn from fashion editor Zanna Roberts Rassi. The idea of working in New York City alongside one of the industry’s elite (Roberts Rassi is also an E! correspondent, a Project Runway All-Stars judge, and the co-founder of Milk Makeup) would have had any other fashion fangirl shaking in her boots, but that wasn’t the case for Rosson. "Zanna is the best at what she does,” Rosson tells us. "She has trail-blazed her way through the industry with poise and determination”—and naturally has a lot of insight to share.

A good stylist is also keyed into what everyone else is doing on a shoot. "Producers, art directors, makeup artists, etc. It will serve you well and ensure you never undervalue someone else’s role—BIG mistake,” Roberts Rassi advises.

Take Advantage of Every Opportunity

One of the biggest thing Roberts Rassi stresses is saying yes when opportunities come your way: "Even if it’s inconvenient or something you’re not sure about,” the stylist adds. "Regrets are worse than fails.”

Value Your Ideas

Roberts Rassi’s motto for building your creative chops? It’s about reminding yourself to speak up and that your ideas are valuable. Rosson agrees: "The worst anyone can say to you is no.”

Read, Read, Read

Roberts Rassi also stressed the importance of keeping up with the news. "The industry news along with other news,” Roberts Rassi tells us. "Information is not only power, it’s inspiration. I’m inspired by anything and everything: the color of a fish in the bottom of the ocean for a new Milk Makeup eye shadow shade, a headline in a newspaper for an E! News fashion segment, the style of a cool girl on the train for a photo shoot vibe.”

Muses Are Important

When starting to collaborate on a theme and look of the shoot, “Rather than finding inspiration in a certain garment, [Zanna recommends] creating a story about my muse and incorporating the garments in her life. It reinforced that I need to have more confidence behind my ideas, and how to think of a full story to present,” says Rosson.

Keep Things in Perspective

According to Roberts Rassi, the trick is to not sweat the small things. "Sometimes you’re ahead; sometimes you’re behind,” she reminds us. "The race is long. Thanks, Baz Luhrmann.” She also instructs aspiring stylists to keep after the internships—as many as you can score. "It’s the best way to learn the job and make connections,” she says. "Be willing, be kind, be flexible.”

With this year’s first phase complete, we got a chance to talk to fashion illustrator Katie Rodgers, renowned painter at Paper Fashion, and her mentee, Riley Sheehey, a 27-year-old freelance illustrator and elementary school art teacher from Arlington, Virginia, and learn more about their creative process.

The pair worked together on various illustration projects during the program, and Rodgers shared invaluable tips on breaking into the industry, the importance of keeping passion alive, and what it truly means to be an entrepreneur. One thing Rodgers hopes Sheehey will continue to work on throughout her entire career? “Having fun with her art and branching outside of her comfort zone,” Rodgers told us. “It’s the best way to keep the inspiration and love for what you do alive!”

It’s not every day you get the opportunity to interview someone as talented and successful as Katie Rodgers, the artist and illustrator behind Paper Fashion. So you can only imagine our excitement when we got to catch up with her and hear what she’s been up to lately. Aside from creating beautiful commissions for clients like Harpers Bazaar, Elle, Glamour, and various luxury brands, it was recently announced that Rodgers was selected to be one of the mentors in SOREL’s annual #SORELstyle program.

If you’re not familiar with it, the program is open to anyone—specifically an artist this round—who wants an inside look at how the fashion world works and the chance to be featured in a #SORELstyle video and photoshoot. Once the applicant is selected (SOREL just announced the lucky winner for phase one!), they will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work alongside Rodgers to see what it really takes to work in such a competitive industry. I first began solely working on fashion illustration and over time began to expand my work into animation and more conceptual fine art that could be used in new ways for commercial or advertising purposes!”
