I have yet to see an Atelier Versace red carpet look I did not love—Penelope Cruz’s ‘07 Oscar Awards ensemble is high up there for me. What’s fantastic about this look is that the pale-pink strapless gown has this stunning ruched bodice and full feather skirt, making it a dreamy, princess-like look that could only be embodied by Cruz herself.

WEAR: Elie Saab gown; emerald earrings 

My love for Angelina Jolie was cemented by her 2009 Oscars red carpet look. While some critics may consider the 2012 black high-slit Atelier Versace gown her best look of all time, I’ll go to bat for this look. Yes, the Elie Saab gown stole my heart, but Jolie’s stunning emerald earrings are what sealed the deal—the dramatic colour contrast, the size, and her damn cheekbones just make this look too divine for humanity.

WHO: Zoe Saldana 

WHAT: 2010 Academy Awards

WEAR: Givenchy Couture gown

Zoe Saldana’s 2010 Oscars red carpet look is lauded as one of the best looks of all time (for a good reason). While the star was nominated for the film Avatar that year, it’s her dress that was the genuinely out-of-this-world thing—the sequins and ombré tulle make this Givenchy Couture gown designed by Riccardo Tisci a celestial piece of Oscars history.

While Rooney Mara’s red carpet style may appear to be simple from far away, the intricate details, textures, and fit say otherwise. Take, for example, her 2012 Oscars red carpet look. To the objective on-looker, she’s wearing a simple white gown, but for the fashion crowd, we know that this Givenchy couture was custom-made by Riccardo Tisci with pearl-coloured lace.

No matter what the tea is, this look is one we’ll be talking about for years to come.

If you were to take a time machine back to the 2013 Oscars, you’d know that the buzz was all about Jennifer Lawerence and Anne Hathaway. Lawrence’s fall up the stairs to her acceptance speech and Hathaway’s "controversial” dress were the talk of the town. But the attention should have been focused on how they both handled the night with such grace (which is easy to do when you’re wearing Dior or Prada) and took away Oscars, too.

Genuinely speaking, there is not a more iconic Oscars red carpet moment in recent history than Lupita Nyong’o’s 2014 ensemble. What made this look historic (other than her win of Best Supporting Actress that year) was this crystal-pleated, powder-blue, deep V-neck Prada gown. We could stare at this look forever.

It’s no secret that Jennifer Lopez has her fair share of iconic looks; however, none quite hold the same place in my heart as her 2015 Oscars After-Party outfit. Yes, her Ellie Saab gown for the ceremony was stunning, but nothing quite distills the "J.Lo aesthetic” like this full-length sequin Zuhair Murad Couture dress and white fur stole. My only question is, does love not cost a thing? Because this gown sure looks like a million bucks.

Let it be stated for the internet records that Emma Stone is secretly that girl who always brings her A game to the red carpet. Whether you’re a Scandal fan or just a Kerry Washington stan, the power of the ensemble she wore to the 2016 Oscars can not be understated. She slayed that carpet like a gladiator in head-to-toe (the ponytail, the Atelier Versace gown with a leather bodice and a high-slit, and the see-through Schutz heels) perfection.

There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about the incredible celebrity and stylist pairing that is Zendaya and Law Roach. Zendaya, why do you do this to me?

Compared to the over-the-top numbers the Oscars red carpet has seen in the past, Saoirse Ronan’s strapless pink Calvin Klein dress isn’t overly exuberant. But the oversize bow in the back makes this a lesson in understated elegance. This look could have been worn to the Oscars in the ‘50s or could easily make a statement well into the future. No one has ever entirely made a case for hot pink on the Oscars red carpet like Gemma Chan. Her voluminous Valentino Haute Couture gown is something I stare at when I feel I need a reminder that there are, indeed, beautiful things in the world.

The 2019 Academy Awards was a huge night for Regina King, as she not only won Best Supporting Actress for the film If Beale Street Could Talk, but she also donned one of her best red carpet looks to date. Of course, King fans are well aware that she’s often one of the most stylish characters on-screen, but the stunning white Oscar de la Renta gown paired with matching Christian Louboutin shoes proved she’s a style icon IRL, too.

If you weren’t already a self-proclaimed Little Monster (like myself), the 2019 Oscars could have felt as if a star was born that evening. Of course, real Lady Gaga fans know she’s served iconic looks for years; her Oscar win (for best original song), the Alexander McQueen dress, and the yellow Tiffany & Co. necklace had her shinin’ like never before.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it: Janelle Monáe does not play when it comes to her style. No gown better encompasses that ethos than the crystal-lacquered silk lamé, tulle mesh Ralph Lauren gown—featuring a draped hood and an open back—she wore to the 2020 Oscars. It took over 600 hours of handwork to embroider 168,000 Swarovski crystals on the dress, making it a masterpiece we won’t forget.

WEAR: On Timothée Chalamet: Prada jacket and trousers; Cartier Tradition brooch

If you know, you know that Timothée Chalamet is never one to shy away from serving a look. (He’ll wear men’s jewellery with ease.) Of course, that fearlessness is sometimes met with mass critique, most recently including strong feelings around his 2020 Oscars outfit. Instead of sticking to a tuxedo, he opted for an anti-suit: a Prada Re-Nylon gabardine jacket with satin racing stripes and matching Prada Re-Nylon trousers over a white poplin shirt. He finished the look with a Cartier Tradition brooch with 18k white gold, platinum, rubies, and diamonds. While the critics may not have been here for it, I have a feeling this look will go down in history as ushering in a new way for men to approach their Oscars red carpet looks.

One person can bring life or death by serving a look, and that’s no other than Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh. Her 2020 Vanity Fair Oscars Party look (a grey, floor-length, sequinned, feather-embellished, deep V-neck Cong Tri dress) had me in shambles.

By now, you know that a list of the best Oscars looks of all time is subjective and ever-changing in the face of trends. I recently asked my friends what four famous figures they’d choose to be on their personal Mount Rushmore and the results were not all that surprising. Their choices were so consistent with who they are as people that the exercise felt like a personality recipe that when followed, would *ding* and pop my friend out of the toaster. 

When it was my turn to answer the question, I was shocked at how much my top inspirations included aesthetic considerations—each of my four had a distinct personal style. After questioning my vanity for a good two minutes, I now rest assured that this isn't a coincidence and is actually borne from true alignment where purpose and values align in every sense, even stylistically. This, my friends, is the pinnacle of success. 

I’m here today to share my fashion Mount Rushmore with you all and, of course, re-create some of their best looks. The four women below not only look good, but they each also follow a consistent process that ensures every look feels like them. While I like to think my personal style stems from my own unique process, these women constantly inspire me and introduce new ways of looking at things. Rihanna

Everybody loves RiRi. Where many celebrities today have stylists and creative directors guiding their image decisions, we can all tell that Rihanna is the one driving the boat. She has the sauce and there is no denying it. I love that she is always trying new things and mixing different inspirations to create something that is uniquely her. Take for example the below outfit which places streetwear inspirations alongside Chanel and pearls. Chef's kiss.

I went with a bikini top and fur coat because why not? The combination of the two feels very much "I do what I want" aka very Rihanna.

Princess Diana

As a kid, I always looked up to Princess Diana's impeccable and classic style. Her ability to push the bounds of her role in the royal family and fashion both make her an icon for the ages. She's pictured below for the first time after her husband publically admitted to adultery wearing a little black number now referred to as the "revenge dress." Again, the story matches the vibes matches the outfit—it's all about alignment.

This dress by Nana Jacqueline is equal parts refined and equal parts sexy. A string of pearls and rhinestones wraps around the waist showing the perfect amount of skin and leaves the rest to the imagination.

I paired the modern-day equivalent of the Revenge Dress with rhinestone earrings from Nana Jacqueline that form the shape of a heart.

Solange

Solange has meticulously curated her stylistic presence to match the vibes of her musical projects, which has really pushed the message even further. She tends to go for more avant-garde designers and silhouettes that help us reimagine the future without bounds. It's rare to see mainstream artists approach fashion so fearlessly and bring to the forefront ideas that usually don't make it into the spotlight. 

This hoodie dress by Armande is so sick that I knew I had to try it on for the Solange look. It's made from 100% silk that feels so nice against the body and drapes beautifully. I paired it with a cowboy hat and boots because we all know Solange doesn't play about where she's from (Houston, Texas). That's actually one of the things I appreciate about her most—she is true to the culture that makes her who she is today.

This Solange look also features pieces from Armande's Demystified collection, which is purposefully all black to showcase the depth of blackness and allows us to focus on the details. I am wearing the satin organza trousers and the mesh gloves, both of which give an enviable air of self-assuredness. I love how these pieces are understated yet eye-catching, and I feel like Solange would appreciate them too.

Paloma Elsesser

The newest kid on my Mount Rushmore block is none other than fashion's favorite girl, Paloma Elsesser. When I tell you I love every single thing she wears, I'm not exaggerating. Similar to Rih, she is constantly reevaluating what styles work well together, taps into trends without looking overly trendy, and oozes with cool-girl confidence while doing it. I'm excited to see how her style evolves over the years and will undoubtedly be paying attention to the playbook she's creating.

As you can see, this look can be re-created in a million different ways, and that's a key lesson in personal style. I've found that all the most stylish women know the silhouettes that look good on them. Another variation of this look that Paloma always gravitates to is the small-top–and–baggy-pants look.

The fashion critics in ‘99 were particularly harsh on Oscars red carpet looks, including Celine Dion’s white Dior satin pantsuit by John Galliano, which she wore styled backward. Little did they know, this would become one of her most iconic looks ever and one of the most celebrated Academy Awards looks of all time. Guess it pays to think outside the box (or just to be Celine Dion).

Something must have been in the water at the 1999 Academy Awards because it served us some serious looks, particularly this two-piece Chanel outfit from Uma Thurman. Of course, it wasn’t her first time stealing the red carpet (she championed a silk lavender Prada dress in ‘94), but it’s an outfit that has left many in their feelings.

WHAT: 2000 Academy Awards

WEAR: Versace gown 

While there are red carpet looks that are timeless, others, like a fine wine, take time to come into their own—that’s the case with Cameron Diaz’s ensemble for the 2000 Oscars. At the time, it could have been considered too risqué, but this see-through Versace gown, in many ways, was a precursor to the beloved naked dresses celebrities wear today.

Salma Hayek has donned some of the chicest Oscars red carpet looks over the years, but none are quite as lovely as her ‘00s ceremony gown. What’s fantastic about this look is that the pale-pink strapless gown has this stunning ruched bodice and full feather skirt, making it a dreamy, princess-like look that could only be embodied by Cruz herself.

My love for Angelina Jolie was cemented by her 2009 Oscars red carpet look. While some critics may consider the 2012 black high-slit Atelier Versace gown her best look of all time, I’ll go to bat for this look. Yes, the Elie Saab gown stole my heart, but Jolie’s stunning emerald earrings are what sealed the deal—the dramatic color contrast, the size, and her damn cheekbones just make this look too divine for humanity.

WHO: Zoe Saldana

Former cover star Zoe Saldana’s 2010 Oscars red carpet look is lauded as one of the best looks of all time (for a good reason). While the star was nominated for the film Avatar that year, it’s her dress that was the genuinely out-of-this-world thing—the sequins and ombré tulle make this Givenchy Couture gown designed by Riccardo Tisci a celestial piece of Oscars history.

While Rooney Mara’s red carpet style may appear to be simple from far away, the intricate details, textures, and fit say otherwise. Take, for example, her 2012 Oscars red carpet look. To the objective on-looker, she’s wearing a simple white gown, but for the fashion crowd, we know that this Givenchy couture was custom-made by Riccardo Tisci with pearl-colored lace.

No matter what the tea is, this look is one we’ll be talking about for years to come.

If you were to take a time machine back to the 2013 Oscars, you’d know that the buzz was all about Jennifer Lawerence and Anne Hathaway. Lawrence’s fall up the stairs to her acceptance speech and Hathaway’s "controversial” dress were the talk of the town. But the attention should have been focused on how they both handled the night with such grace (which is easy to do when you’re wearing Dior or Prada) and took away Oscars, too.

Genuinely speaking, there is not a more iconic Oscars red carpet moment in recent history than Lupita Nyong’o’s 2014 ensemble. What made this look historic (other than her win of Best Supporting Actress that year) was this crystal-pleated, powder-blue, deep V-neck Prada gown. We could stare at this look forever.

WHAT: 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

WEAR: Zuhair Murad Couture dress; white fur. 

It’s no secret that Jennifer Lopez has her fair share of iconic looks; however, none quite hold the same place in my heart as her 2015 Oscars After-Party outfit. Yes, her Ellie Saab gown for the ceremony was stunning, but nothing quite distills the "J.LO aesthetic” like this full-length sequin Zuhair Murad Couture dress and white fur stole. My only question is, does love not cost a thing? Because this gown sure looks like a million bucks.

WHO: Emma Stone

WHAT: 2015 Academy Awards

Let it be stated for the internet records that Emma Stone is secretly that girl who always brings her A game to the red carpet. Case in point: the green floor-length, high-slit, and sequinned Elie Saab gown she wore to the 2015 Academy Awards. This isn’t a bad look; it’s a super-bad look if you catch my drift.

Whenever I see another red carpet look from the one-and-only Jane Fonda, I always pray that I can look as fabulous as her when I grow up. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be able to wear a full-sequin Zuhair Murad Haute Couture jumpsuit, but then again, it’s Jane Fonda, and no one else can serve a red carpet look like her.

WHAT: 2016 Academy Awards

WEAR: Atelier Versace gown; Schutz shoes

Whether you’re a Scandal fan or just a Kerry Washington stan, the power of the ensemble she wore to the 2016 Oscars can not be understated. She slayed that carpet like a gladiator in head-to-toe (the ponytail, the Atelier Versace gown with a leather bodice and a high-slit, and the see-through Schutz heels) perfection.

There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about the incredible celebrity and stylist pairing that is Zendaya and Law Roach. The style companions have served us some of the most iconic red carpet looks to date, including this stunning floor-length, off-the-shoulder, chocolate-brown Giambattista Valli number. Zendaya, why do you do this to me?

WEAR: Calvin Klein dress; Christian Louboutin shoes; Cartier jewelry

Compared to the over-the-top numbers the Oscars red carpet has seen in the past, Saoirse Ronan’s strapless pink Calvin Klein dress isn’t overly exuberant. But the oversize bow in the back makes this a lesson in understated elegance. This look could have been worn to the Oscars in the ‘50s or could easily make a statement well into the future. That’s what makes it iconic.

The great thing about the Oscars is that sometimes our favorite musicians will be nominated for film scores and show up wearing some of the best looks of the night—that was the case with SZA’s 2019 Oscars look. The stunning custom Vivienne Westwood dress with a corset bodice and a frayed hem had her looking like a supermodel.

Like it or not, this is an Oscars red carpet look we’ll be talking about for years to come.

No one has ever entirely made a case for hot pink on the Oscars red carpet like Gemma Chan. Her voluminous Valentino Haute Couture gown is something I stare at when I feel I need a reminder that there are, indeed, beautiful things in the world.

The 2019 Academy Awards was a huge night for Regina King, as she not only won Best Supporting Actress for the film If Beale Street Could Talk, but she also donned one of her best red carpet looks to date. Of course, King fans are well aware that she’s often one of the most stylish characters on-screen, but the stunning white Oscar de la Renta gown paired with matching Christian Louboutin shoes proved she’s a style icon IRL, too.

WEAR: Alexander McQueen dress; Tiffany & Co. jewelry

If you weren’t already a self-proclaimed Little Monster (like myself), the 2019 Oscars could have felt as if a star was born that evening. Of course, real Lady Gaga fans know she’s served iconic looks for years; her Oscar win (for best original song), the Alexander McQueen dress, and the yellow Tiffany & Co. necklace had her shinin’ like never before.

WEAR: Ralph Lauren custom evening dress; Forevermark jewelry

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it: Janelle Monáe does not play when it comes to her style. No gown better encompasses that ethos than the crystal-lacquered silk lamé, tulle mesh Ralph Lauren gown—featuring a draped hood and an open back—she wore to the 2020 Oscars. It took over 600 hours of handwork to embroider 168,000 Swarovski crystals on the dress, making it a masterpiece we won’t forget.

WHO: Timothée Chalamet and Margot Robbie

WHAT: 2020 Academy Awards

WEAR: On Timothée Chalamet: Prada jacket and trousers; Cartier Tradition brooch

If you know, you know that Timothée Chalamet is never one to shy away from serving a look. (He’ll wear men’s jewelry with ease.) Of course, that fearlessness is sometimes met with mass critique, most recently including strong feelings around his 2020 Oscars outfit. Instead of sticking to a tuxedo, he opted for an anti-suit: a Prada Re-Nylon gabardine jacket with satin racing stripes and matching Prada Re-Nylon trousers over a white poplin shirt. He finished the look with a Cartier Tradition brooch with 18k white gold, platinum, rubies, and diamonds. While the critics may not have been here for it, I have a feeling this look will go down in history as ushering in a new way for men to approach their Oscars red carpet looks.

One person can bring life or death by serving a look, and that’s no other than Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh. Her 2020 Vanity Fair Oscars Party look (a gray, floor-length, sequinned, feather-embellished, deep V-neck Cong Tri dress) had me in shambles.

By now, you know that a list of the best Oscars looks of all time is subjective and ever-changing in the face of trends. Occasionally, there are hidden gems—like this Oscar de la Renta look Janet Mock wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars Party—that go unnoticed. But with time, reflection, and a whole lot of sequins, we’re able to see that the best Oscars looks of all time strike the perfect balance between being timeless and being of that time period. How to know if something can be considered stylish is in the eye of the beholder, I guess, but for now, I’ll keep staring at these looks.

We had very few red carpet fashion moments to indulge in last year, but they will no doubt resume at some point in 2021—and we'll be there to cover them. Red carpet events are always a huge team effort, as they require hardworking stylists, tailors, makeup artists, and more, and the final product is always a glorious look for the fashion history books.

Looking ahead to the return of red carpet events—whenever that may be—I mined runway images to come up with some predictions about what celebrities will wear. For instance, I thought the sultry Versace S/S 21 collection was rife with dresses that Blake Lively would love, and Molly Goddard's show had Gemma Chan's name written all over it. Scroll down to see my predictions for award season 2021. 

This inventive Halpern S/S 21 dress might be too forward-thinking for the Oscars, but here's hoping it pops up on the Met Gala red carpet. Katy Perry, are you listening? 

This intricate gown from the Chanel Métiers d'Art 2021 show is giving me Natalie Portman vibes. 

Christopher John Rogers is a master of both color and shapes, and this S/S 21 dress proves it. I can picture Zendaya in this cheery number. 

British designer Molly Goddard is known for her poufy dresses, but this one from S/S 21 just might be my favorite. Fashion chameleon Gemma Chan would pull this off with aplomb. 

We all know Tracee Ellis Ross loves metallic dresses, so I think she'd fancy this Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture S/S 21 look. 

I'll be very disappointed if Blake Lively doesn't don this Versace S/S 21 dress at some point next year. 

Sarah Paulson loves a statement red carpet moment, so I'm envisioning her in this Givenchy F/W 20 caped look. 

This bold Roksanda S/S 21 dress would suit Lizzo's penchant for extraordinary red carpet outfits. 

If I had to predict who would choose this Schiaparelli S/S 21 minidress, I'd go with supermodel Gisele Bündchen. 

The jewel of Copenhagen, Cecilie Bahnsen, is known for her confectionary designs. I can picture Olivia Palermo looking radiant in this S/S 21 number. 

Kate Bosworth came to my mind immediately after seeing this frothy pink Giambattista Valli F/W 20 dress. 

Emilia Wickstead took the statement-collar trend to the next level for S/S 21 and it's giving me Katie Holmes vibes. 

This LaQuan Smith S/S 21 dress is giving me major Jennifer Lopez vibes. 

Versace S/S 21

Elle Fanning gravitates towards princess gowns and this stunning one from Erdem S/S 21 is more than worthy of her consideration. 

This Paco Rabanne S/S 22 suit of armor is destined to be worn by Solange Knowles on the no-rules red carpet of the Met Gala.

It takes a certain type of woman to keep the whole world afloat—and Janelle Monáe is that type. Women around the world felt seen the moment she stepped onto the world’s main stage. She’s not only a black woman but an openly queer advocate with one hell of a wardrobe. And her badassery doesn’t stop there; we could spend days talking about her career. From starring in some of Hollywood's most daring movies such as Moonlight and Hidden Figures to creating some true billboard bops, this is a woman of many hats, quite literally. This is why, in an effort to save time, we decided to focus on one part of what makes Monáe iconic: her style. 

Her looks over the years have always been the perfect mix of camp and androgyny done right. You don’t have to take my word for it. Ahead, you’ll find some of Janelle Monáe’s best looks, starting from the past to the present. You won’t be disappointed.

It wouldn’t be an outfit roundup without a little throwback, and Monáe’s look for the Ralph Lauren Fashion's Night Out party back in 2010 is quite the flashback. Since emerging onto the scene, this woman has been the purveyor of a good suit paired with a statement hat. Is it just me, or is André Leon Talley is giving all the auntie vibes? 

I might have screamed when I found this image of Beyoncé and Monáe at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards back in 2011 in matching sequin jackets. Seeing these ladies in formation is a feminist’s dream come true. 

While Monáe is typically a bit more camp-inspired when it comes to her looks, I found her 2012 Met Gala look for the theme Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations to be quite refreshing. It was a simpler time when platform heels were as socially acceptable as showing up to the Met Gala in a black jumpsuit. 

Let me set the scene: You’re in your car, and you turn on the radio, which playing is a song called "We Are Young.” You, my friend, are in 2013, and Janelle Monáe has been nominated for a Grammy for this record. But she’s not a regular artist; she’s the type of artist who shows up in a sleek tuxedo. Oh, we were so young indeed. 

It is not possible to fully describe all that encompasses Black Girl Magic, but if you tried, it would be the moment Monáe and Erykah Badu took the award for the record "Q.u.e.e.n." at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. This Prince-inspired look on Monáe is magic in and of itself. 

Something must have been in the air in 2014 because in addition to Beyoncé's and Rihanna's iconic Met Gala looks, Monáe rolled up in this Tadashi Shoji's cape and Kwiat diamonds. PSA: Heroes do indeed wear capes. 

Monáe’s most iconic style moments are not solely reserved for the red carpet. In fact, her street style is, dare I say, even better. Don’t believe me? Consider the look above, Frankly, wearing head-to-toe Chanel to Chanel’s S/S 16 show is all the proof you need.  

Did you just gasp? You should have because Monáe is one of the only people who can truly pull off a head-to-toe black sequin look from Christian Sirano, as seen at the Gotham Independent Film Awards. At this point, no one should even try, because Monáe will always wear it better.

If Monáe’s crown was up for debate, the murmurs of a coup were shut all the way down the moment she showed up to the Met Gala in 2017 in this fairytale-like Ralph & Russo dress. This is the type of look that would have Marie Antoinette in her feelings. 

Yes, another pantsuit, but honestly, can you blame me? This Prabal Gurung suit that she wore with Stuart Weitzman shoes to the Hidden Figures screening in 2016 was out of this world. NASA, please make the next space suits this chic. 

Please bury me in the Jenny Packham cage gown Monáe wore to the 28th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala—kidding. But not really, because yet again Monáe proves that a black-and-white color palette is anything but boring.

Monáe needs to pay for my hospital bill because my heart stopped when she stepped onto the in this fresh-off-the-runway Elie Saab couture dress. While it deviates slightly from her signature black-and-white color pallette, gold on this queen is very fitting. 

Oh, so you thought Janelle was done serving Oscar looks in 2017? Nah, fam. In fact, she showed up to the Vanity Fair after-party in this black Alexandre Vauthier couture gown. And while the couturier has dressed everyone from Lizzo to Beyoncé, this look deserves its own hall of fame.

Unpopular opinion ahead: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination was the best damn Met Gala theme yet. Not only were we served the iconic images of Rihanna as the pope, Zendaya as Joan of Arc, Solange in a do-rag (should I go on?), but also added to this holiness was Monáe in a stunning Marc Jacobs dress and custom hat. Hello, thank you for answering all my style prayers.

When the history books catalog the most iconic style moments for the LGBTIQA+ community, you best believe that Monáe in a tiered Nicolas Jebran rainbow gown will be in it. Honestly, there is no better way to deviate from your signature color, not to mention celebrate Pride Month, than showing up to the 2018 BET Awards dripping in all the colors of the rainbow. 

Very few women can pull off tulle, but Monáe doesn't struggle when it comes to wearing this voluminous fabric. In fact, being the vision that she is, she casually rolled up to receive her award for the visionary category of the Glamour’s 2018 Woman of the Year Awards in a Jean Paul Gaultier tulle dress. And while her dress alone deserved an award, her acceptance speech cemented my love for her.

You could say that 2018 belonged to Monáe. She released one of the hottest albums of the year and racked up award nominations for Dirty Computer. She was feeling herself so much, in fact, that she wore these chaps at the Billboard Women in Music Gala. And while chaps are quite the controversial choice, you have to admit this woman deserves an award for the sheer fact she pulled them off with such ease. 

While 2018 was a great year for Monáe, it is possible that 2019 was even better. After all, she started the year off strong by showing up to the Grammys in this look. Jean Paul Gaultier and Janelle Monáe do it again. 

While most people look to street stars during Fashion Week for inspiration, I look to Janelle Monáe. I found myself feeling the need to copy this head-to-toe Thom Browne look, in particular, which she wore to the F/W 20 shows. BRB, going to go put my hair into two buns. 

If one stunning Paris Fashion Week look wasn’t enough, how about two in a single day? After Monáe blessed us with her Thom Browne outfit, she was spotted on the way to Valentino’s F/W 20 show in a head-to-toe red monochrome look. She could literally step on me in those red patent-leather Mary Jane shoes any day, and I wouldn’t even be mad.

Monáe showed up to Chanel’s Paris Fashion Week show like the goddess she is. At this point, we should just dedicate a whole story to her in head-to-toe Chanel looks. 

If you’ve scrolled this far, then that means you understand that Monáe is the steward of avant-garde style—which is why she did not play with her 2019 Met Gala look. The star showed up in this high-camp Christian Siriano dress and hats, on hats, on hats. We can never unsee this look. 

Monáe performed on the Coachella main stage for the first time in 2019. And while performing alongside Childish Gambino and Lizzo was legendary in and of itself, it wouldn’t be a true spectacle without some serious looks. In line with her iconic look from the music video "Pynk,” she wore her vagina-inspired pants, and honestly, Coachella hasn’t seen such a look since.

While my fellow editors were in a tizzy over Ralph Lauren’s New York Fashion Week presentation this past S/S 20, I was deceased from Monáe’s performance at the show. If hearing her belt out the jams weren’t enough, she casually rolled up in this Ralph Lauren blue sequin number. In my humble opinion, this woman wins fashion week every time. 

It should be noted that the same amount of time dedicated to Monáe’s style should also be allocated to her hair. Yes, sure, the Alexandre Vauthier couture minidress that she wore to the annual Harper's Bazaar Icons Party is fabulous. But it’s not as jaw-dropping as the bedazzled barrettes interwoven through her braids. We’ll keep that in mind for a future story, but for now, let me just add this to my list of hairstyles to try. 

And finally, her most recent best look: the stunning Honayda gown she wore to the premiere of the film Harriet. Like all of Monáe’s looks and work, she never ceases to dazzle. More than that, whether it be honoring the heroic Harriet Thuman in her most recent film or sharing her story as a queer woman on the red carpet, in her songs, and everywhere she goes, Monáe shows that caring is always in style.

Do you know who’s magical as fuck? Beyoncé. Anyone who disagrees can catch my side-eye because there’s no denying this woman. No other artist has quite dedicated themselves to their own evolution in their career, their art, their performances, their community, and their personal style all while being unapologetically themselves.

Being witness to a black woman living embodiment of excellence, not to mention witnessing the slayage, is a blessing, which is why I did not take rounding up Beyoncé’s best style moments of all time lightly. I did my journalistic duty and looked through every decade (around 2000+ images' worth) and spent hours debating each image.

Hold onto your edges, people. These looks might hurt you.

The '90s 

Baby Beyoncé? Yes, please. As an avid member of the Beyhive, I'm always scouring the internet for pictures of Beyonce as a child, and this was a great find. Not only is she rocking a timeless tie-dye look, but she and Solange are so damn cute. 

Oh, there are so many things wonderful about this look. First off, all of Destiny’s Child's notorious matching sets were to die for. Secondly, this look is in many ways a time capsule for the trends of the 90s (hello platform boots). It’s around the time the group released their second album, The Writing's on the Wall, which gave us all the iconic bops. 

The Early 2000s

Let’s be real here, the culture’s piping tea moments and most extra looks can always be found at MTV’s Music Video Awards—and the 2000s were no exception to this fact. From J.Lo baring it all in her Sean John crop top to Destiny’s Child taking a bedazzler to their leather corsets, the 2000s has never disappointed my insatiable desire for wild looks. 

The launch of the BET awards in 2001 was historic, and so was Destiny’s child look for the red carpet. Someone, please give Beyoncé an award just for looking this good in a sheer dress before it was chic. 

While Michelle Williams took the stage performing in the Broadway play Aida, Beyoncé took to the show’s the red carpet in an all-denim look. Beyoncé is that really you? In all denim? So very 2002 of you.

Beyoncé stole the stage during the 2004 Grammy Awards. Not only did she perform with Prince, but she took home not one, but five awards for her album, Dangerously in Love. If that weren't enough, she also stole our attention in this golden silk dress designed by Tina Knowles herself.

Some may think of Beyoncé’s most recent street style looks as proof of her slayage, but don’t get it twisted—she’s been serving looks since 2004. This green beret with a blackberry phone in Paris is no exception. 

The moment Beyoncé stepped onto the 77th Annual Academy Awards red carpet in this rich black velvet floor-length dress, I lost my breath. Leave it to a Virgo—yes, that's Beyoncé's zodiac sign—to make a classic strapless black dress even posher. 

Let us not forget the moment that Destiny’s Child stunned us all at the 2005 BET Awards with their performance of Cater 2 U—Beyoncé giving a lap dance to Terrance Howard? Iconic. And though Terrance never had the baddest woman in the game up in his sheets, he was able to appreciate this full-length body-con nude dress. 

Yes, I’m fully aware this is her second full-length floor gown in this list, but it’s to prove a point. Point being that Beyoncé comes to slay every damn time. It just so happens to be that this time she was slaying in a stunning Ellie Saab gown at the 64th Annual Golden Globes. 

Nothing has ever been the same since the 2009 MTV Music Awards. In case you were living in outer space at the time, let me bring you up to speed: Back in 2009, Beyoncé blessed us with every single girl’s anthem, Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it), which was nominated for MTV’s best video of the year.

When the iconic video was snubbed by one of Taylor Swift’s mediocre videos (sorry Taylor fans, it’s not her best work), Kanye stormed the stage to interrupt Taylor Swift’s speech and proclaim his love for Beyoncé’s video. For worse, this ceremony started Taylor and Kayne’s infamous back-and-forth relationship, but for the best, it established Beyonce's go-to onstage look as embellished leotards.

What does one wear to accept their Grammy nomination for the best female pop vocal performance? Giorgio Armani of course—or at least that's what Beyoncé choose to wear in 2010. And while I love seeing her in a Privé dress, I’m also here for her in 3D glasses.

The Late 2000s

There are so many moments that have defined Beyoncé as a force to be reckoned with, but none sit as close to my heart than her singing at Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013. While Beyoncé wasn’t the first black woman to perform at a presidential inauguration, she did join the ranks of iconic black artists like Arthea Franklin, Marian Anderson, and James Brown. Not only did she stun us with her incredible performance of the national anthem, but she did so in an equally as stunning black Pucci dress paired with a Christian Dior coat. 

Beyoncé is constantly a champion for new designers, in fact for the 56th Grammy Awards in 2014 she wore this stunning floor-length dress designed by former project runway contestant Michael Costello. Leave it to Beyoncé to not only lift the voice of new talent but to look damn good while doing so. 

If the dictionary added an image next to the word "flawless," it would have to be a picture of Beyoncé in couture Givenchy at the 2014 Met Gala. Not only is it one of her best looks, but It’s also the look she wore in the infamous elevator scuffle where Solange popped off Jay Z for allegedly cheating. Frankly, if I were to witness a fight over trifling matters, I too would want to be dripping in Givenchy sequins just as a reminder to Becky that she ain’t even half of me. 

If your heart didn’t melt when Blue Ivy and Jay Z presented Beyoncé with the Vanguard Award in 2014, you’re not a true beehive member. Not only was Blue saying, "Good job, Mommy” iconic, but this moment encapsulates all of the albums and ensembles that lead up to this point. It was Beyoncé not only getting the recognition she deserves but showing the world success and motherhood aren't anomalies.

How do I describe my love for what Beyoncé and J.Lo wore to Vanity Fair's post-87th Annual Academy Awards party? I can't—it's too much, this much pretty hurts. From Beyonce's bob to her full-length Stella McCartney dress, this look makes me want to sign a non-disclosure right now just so I can party with these two.

This look kills me. Not only does Beyoncé prove yet again that her style game isn’t limited to the stage, but she’s rocking a polished all-denim look at Yeezy’s first fashion show next to our other queen, Rihanna. Consider me dead—the cause of my premature death? Too much fashion.

I ain’t sorry for the following statement: Kim Kardashian West wearing a naked dress pales in comparison to Beyoncé’s 2015 Met Gala look. No one can re-create the queen; she’s just too much for all of us, and the moment she proved it is when she showed up late to the 2015 gala in this barely-there bejeweled Givenchy. Moments like these fill me with infinite gratitude to be living in the time of Beyoncé. 

The wonderful thing about art of all forms is that it makes people uncomfortable. It can pose questions and raise awareness—and Beyonce’s performance at the 50th Super Bowl did just that. She performed Formation on the field in a black military-inspired leotard alongside her backup dancers rocking afros adorned with black berets.

Their looks paid homage to the Black Panthers 50 years after the group’s formation, and to say people were upset over these berets is an understatement. Granted they weren't actually upset about the style choices, the running joke happened to be that people forgot she was black until this performance. During it, they were clearly reminded.

But just to be clear, Beyoncé has always been black; she just also has happened to be beloved by all, which is why this style moment was one for the books. She used her platform to stand up for communities of color—to bring forth an important conversation around police brutality, and to reinform about the misconceptions of the Black Panther Party—via her performance and styling choices. Frankly, nothing is more stylish than that. 

There’s no denying that Beyoncé has created the tracks every self-proclaimed feminist bumps post-breakup. But one of the best gifts to the world was when she released her visual album, Lemonade, in 2016. In many ways, this is Beyoncé’s most unapologetic work; it gave us a raw glimpse into her reckoning with infidelity but was filled with visual moments that were unapologetically black and unapologetically stylish. While Beyoncé has always used her performances and music to represent her identity as a black feminist, each look within the visual album was calculated, chic, and most of all a call to action for all women of color to get in formation, throw their middle fingers up, and slay.

After releasing Lemonade, Jay was banned from being Bey's date for a while, which is totally okay because we were blessed with seeing 4-year-old Blue Ivy show up to the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards with her mom, both in matching gowns. Beyoncé broke records by taking home eight awards that night, but Blue Ivy wore an $11,000 gown—basically, it was the best girl’s night ever. 

If you're not sure what the phrase "Guccied down" means, look no further than when Beyoncé was spotted in New York in this full all-pink ensemble. Beyoncé dripping in Gucci on a casual day in October is the living embodiment of being decked out.

The best Beyoncé news we’ve ever received is when Beyoncé announced she was having twins in early 2017. Eleven days later she gave us arguably one of her most iconic performances, and looks, to date. Wearing a Peter Dundas creation (the same designer who created her the iconic yellow dress she wore in her Hold Up music video), she paid tribute to all the African, Hindu, and Greek goddesses that represented not only fertility but divine feminine energy at the 2017 Grammy Awards. In essence, Beyoncé was not only a literal goddess, but she was making a tribute to the goddess within all of us.

You better believe that Beyoncé didn’t share the first picture of the twins in any basic fashion—she actually broke the internet with this iconic photo of her holding them in an equally internet-breaking dress by Palomo. It made every month waiting for Queen B updates so very worth it. 

Leave it to Beyoncé to look this fabulous post-pregnancy—she’s proof that we’re smart enough to make these millions, strong enough to bear the children, and then get back to business. And Beyoncé meant business with this custom Walter Mendez dress that she wore to Jay’s Tidal benefit concert in 2017.

The custom Nicolas Jebran black gown Beyoncé wore to the 2018's Grammy's is by far one of the best looks of her life. Sure, she was late for the ceremony, but can you blame her? When you have a dress like that, it will take you 45 minutes to get all dressed up, and you still might not make it… 

While this isn't the first time we've spotted Beyoncé and Blue in cute ensembles together, it was great to see them casual together at the 67th NBA All-Star game. Not only does Beyoncé per usual kill with a chic courtside look, but she left us wondering how far we'd go to photobomb this selfie situation.

Beyoncé made history by being the first black woman to headline Coachella, and if you haven’t seen Homecoming, her Netflix documentary, about it yet then your life is incomplete. Her performance at Coachella could be defined as one of the best of her entire career—and the costumes are up there too. The clothing she wears for the performance not only pay homage to HBCUs and steppers, but those custom Christian Louboutin boots with holographic fringe are historic in and of themselves. 

Let it be historically recognized that 2018 was the year of Beyoncé. If Coachella wasn’t enough, in Jay and Bey fashion, mid-tour they released their first joint album, Everything Is Love. It was a response to their previous famed albums (Lemonade and 4:44) to tell the story of their love. But what made it even more epic is the fact they released their music video for the single entitled "Apeshit" filmed in the Louvre. Casual, right? I’m not sure if it gets any better than seeing Beyoncé and Jay in matching suits in front of the Mona Lisa.

Speaking of their tour (and from personal experience), I can attest to saying that the outfits Beyoncé wore for their On The Run II tour were some of her best looks onstage. Not only was it incredible to witness the compilation of two incredible artist’s work over a decade, but I may have shed a few tears in the presence of all the amazing looks from designers like Balmain, LaQuan Smith, Gucci, and Dunas.

Beyoncé made history with this look—quite literally. Not only was Beyonce's feature in Vogue photographed by the first African American photographer to ever shoot a cover in its 125-year history, but the image of her wearing the sequin-covered Valentino dress with the gold Philip Treacy headpiece will be part of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.

Anytime I'm feeling particularly down, I just remind myself to look at this picture of Beyoncé in Italy celebrating her birthday while wearing a stunning Caroline Constas set. It is the only mental vacation I need. 

Who runs the world? Beyoncé. Because even in the midst of serving the most iconic tour looks and cover shoot to date in her career, she managed to make time to perform at the City of Hope Gala in this breathtaking Ralph and Russo couture dress from the brand's fall 2018 collection. Beyoncé outdid herself again with this look—but are we even surprised? 

Beyoncé does not just serve looks or sing songs; she uses her platform to advocate for what's right, which is why it came as no surprise that she and Jay headlined the inaugural Global Citizen Festival in South Africa honoring Nelson Mandela's legacy. Don't get me wrong here; her looks were phenomenal because they highlighted a diverse set of African designers. But don't let it detract from the fact the concert brought in over $7 billion dollars to help the United Nations’ anti-poverty effort. If that ain't legendary, I don't know what is.

Honestly, there not a more badass moment than when the Carters won a grammy at the beginning of 2019 for Everything is Love and still didn't show up to the ceremony. But them not attending didn't mean we weren't blessed with a bomb look—they showed up in their best possible brunch looks for Rock Nation. Can I get away with wearing this Balmain dress to brunch too?

While the hive lost it over the whole potential Becky situation at the 2019 NBA finals, I lost it over this look. Let's be real, Jay ain't gonna risk losing his wife again, especially when she pulls up in an all-nude Alexandre Vauthier set. So please, Beehive, let's remember that RBF doesn't mean the new Becky has re-emerged. Let's focus our energy not on death threats, but on Beyoncé wearing this By Far bag. 

Beyoncé served multiple looks for The Lion King's red carpet, but she made the world stop when she was spotted with Megan Markle in this floor-length yellow dress by the under-the-radar brand Cong Tri. Beyoncé never ceases to amaze. She takes our breath away with every song, and every look and then say says, "Now carry on."

Solange Knowles usually wears vibrant prints and the brightest colours she can find; however, at New York Fashion Week this week, she showed that sometimes nothing looks better than head-to-toe black. Solange wore a black off-the-shoulder jacket by Beaufille with a pair of cropped tuxedo trousers, and then added drama with an exaggerated leather black waist belt, mismatched gold earrings sweeping her shoulders and a pair of elegant backless black mules by Stuart Weitzman. Last night, Billboard presented its annual dinner and award gala, co-hosted by American Express. This was the first time the magazine held the event in Los Angeles, and it was a star-studded evening consisting of a red carpet; a cocktail reception; a seated dinner and awards presentation; as well as live performances by Camila Cabello, Kelly Clarkson, and more.

The annual event recognizes "some of the most talented, influential and successful female artists in the music industry, while also recognizing the most powerful female executives in the business," per the press release. And among those honored last night was Selena Gomez, who has been named Billboard's Woman of the Year.

Gomez thanked her BFF and kidney transplant donor, Francia Raisa, during her heartfelt acceptance speech. "I think Francia should be getting this award," the singer shared. "She saved my life. … I feel incredibly lucky." Prior to the ceremony, the two shared a sweet hug in front of the red carpet cameras.

Others honored at the annual event were Solange, who won the American Express Impact Award, Camila Cabello, who was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and Mary J. Blige, who took home the Icon Award.

On Tuesday night, tech giant Google hosted two #MadebyGoogle events, which took place concurrently in New York City and Los Angeles. At the pop-up in the East Coast, Solange headlined the event while Jaden Smith served as the host for the West Coast attendees. Last night, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists and industry insiders gathered at NYC's Spring Studios for the 13th annual gala and awards. Husband-wife design duo Laura Vassar and Kristopher Brock of Brock Collection took home top honors (and a cool $400,000 cash prize), and the red carpet might have been one the best we've seen. 

From A-list ladies like Zendaya and Solange Knowles to fashion It girls like Dree Hemingway and Martha Hunt, the attendees all proved that the CFDA/VFF red carpet is all about standout style. "I honestly feel like the dress chose me," Zendaya tells Vogue of her cut-out embroidered Michael Kors Collection gown. "I put it on and knew this was the one." Meanwhile, Dree Hemingway stood out in a tomboy-inspired look, complete with an oversize NBA pullover. Bold colors and fabrics were aplenty, fashion statements were made, and unique style took over the red carpet last night—and we're all for it.

The coolest of cool girls, Solange Knowles, attended NYFW's Creatures of Comfort show wearing an outfit that expertly displayed how to wear the ballet trend in real life. She took a simple tank, cool pair of jeans, and block-heel sandals, and topped the outfit off with a trench made of the most ballerina-esque of fabrics—tulle. His latest campaign, captured for Michael Kors, is a true ode to the art of street style photography, featuring fashion icons like Solange Knowles, Soo Joo Park, Nina Agdal and Princess Olympia of Greece on the streets of New York City. The campaign, called "The Walk," highlights the designer’s fall handbags, which the influencers styled with Michael Kors fall ready-to-wear. “It was really a fun experience observing how each girl would make the clothes and accessories their own while still being true to their everyday style,” Ton says.

What to wear? This predicament is greatly heightened when the occasion in mind is your wedding day. Fashion editors are not immune to the bridal pressure cooker either; if anything, it adds more gravity to people’s expectations. The lead-up to my wedding involved the usual whirlwind of questions facing a newly engaged woman: What dress would I go for? How would I wear my hair? Which designer would I choose? The hunt was on for the dream dress but it just didn’t go as well as I’d hoped.

Being curvy, tall and a lover of carbs, I couldn’t imagine myself in something slinky, nor did I want to go down the meringue route. I made multiple appointments to try on wedding gowns but my heart didn’t flutter. Quite the contrary, I felt doomed to look like an avalanche of crêpe de chine. I just couldn’t find a 360-degree fit for my shape that oozed my style. As options narrowed and lunch breaks were filled up with snow flurries of manic dress searches, I called it quits on bridal pret-à-porter. The dress just didn’t exist. Yet.

You can choose a designer dress from a collection and have it fitted exclusively to your shape. Wonderful, but what if you want to go one step further and design your own garment? One could save up £200,000 and hit the marble halls of Paris where an exclusive design is made for you from one of the prestigious haute couture fashion houses, but considering there's a minority of regular global customers, this is unlikely for most.

If you don't own a yacht or have six digits to spare, then fear not, another option is available. You could find a British-based dress designer costume designer who can make a gown especially for you. Some call it design couture—a process that includes a toile of your body, an exclusive design, a garment made in-house, and personal fittings to underscore the design process. Bridal-designers-cum-courtiers are like gold dust because only a select few fashion houses make one-of-kind gowns; the industries main focus is on ready-to-wear. I found the right one via recommendations from friends at Brides magazine, but some determined Google searches would unearth your local options.

We've tapped leading wedding design couturier Anita Massarella for tips on where to look, questions to ask, and what to expect so brides can ensure perfect results with a dressmaker.

Who What Wear UK: There’s so much to organize for a wedding day. How important is it to share information about the event planning with the dress designer?

Anita Massarella: It’s very helpful to know as much as possible. I like to get a background of the bride’s wedding vision, and if there’s a storyboard or Pinterest link to ideas then that helps me to get a sense of the couple’s personality.

WWW UK: What questions do you often ask the bride about the wedding plans?

AM: Is the day going to be formal or more relaxed? In a grand venue or outdoors? Home or abroad? Even if the bride is still forming a plan for her big day, it’s helpful to know the wider context so that together we can create a suitable design for the season. As soon as the colour theme for the venue is decided, it’s important to inform your dress designer so that it can be reflected in little flourishes on the garment, if at all.

WWW UK: It’s hard to know what credentials to look out for in a fashion house or dressmaker. How do you identify where to go?

AM: If you cannot find what you want in ready-to-wear (i.e. off-the-peg collections) then having something designed uniquely for you is a great option. Enquire if the designer can offer exclusive designs or to what extent they customise dresses. We create one-of-a-kind couture dresses but not all places do. It's also okay to ask how many years of experience the designer has. Do read the client testimonials on their social media and website; it’s clear when a brand has a good reputation. You ideally want a team that can deliver the entire package: create an exclusive design to suit you, produce the dress pattern, make the dress in-house and provide the professional fittings.

WWW UK: Where do most of your brides get their dress ideas from?

AM: Mainly Instagram, Pinterest or cut-outs from society events in the back of Vogue, Tatler etc. I’ve noticed that when people look at photos from formal events, like polo or Ascot, then it’s easier to see a range of different clothing designs worn by real people with varying figures. It can be less daunting than looking at models.

WWW UK: Once you’ve found the right person to collaborate with and to make your dress, what’s the best way to kick-start the design process?

AM: You don’t need to know the fabric or design terminology, a good designer can interpret what you want by the way you describe what you like. For example, an experienced designer will be able to tell from a photo if the bride wants something soft, bias-cut and clings to the body, and billowing chiffon coming from the back of it, or if the structure of the dress needs to boned, corseted, stiff dress etc.

WWW UK: There are so many different fabrics to choose from. How do you pick the right one?

AM: Identify how you would like your dress to move and sit on your body. If you want it to sway and flow, then chiffon is perfect for that. If you want a stiff dress then gabardine holds its shape; but this where the designer's expertise comes in. Just remember that the style of the dress needs to work with the choice of fabric.

WWW UK: How do you get ideas into one cohesive design?

AM: Begin with an outline of a body sketched on a piece of paper. Drawing out ideas is a great starting point. I tend to go step-by-step from talking about what neckline would suit the client to the favoured sleeve length, how it fits the waist etc. At each stage, you need to consider how the design works as a whole and how to keep it all in proportion with your shape.

WWW UK: When the design is agreed, what’s the next step?

AM: The next stage is finalising which fabrics will be used in the lining, for the main body of the dress. This process involves looking at lots of fabric samples with your designer and exploring which shades suit your complexion. I go as far as including the bride in choosing the very buttons and hand-picking the beads that will be sewn on! You can decide which beads, what colours, what shade, what size! If you’re making a dress from scratch, you can even cherry-pick embellishments or fabrics that suit the shade of your eyes.

WWW UK: How can a bride get the most out of dress fittings?

AM: Wear a really good fitting bra, and the heels that you are going to wear on the day (or of a similar height) because that will affect your posture. A good designer will offer you the opportunity to make adjustments at your fitting. Do take the opportunity to amend the design slightly or be more bold with decisions, like lowering a neckline slightly or exaggerating the silhouette of the dress by asking for the fabric to be nipped in a little.

WWW UK: On a second fitting, is it a good idea to bring the extra outfit details?

AM: Absolutely! The second fitting is where you can road test all of the elements of your look to see what works. If you’re having a hair trial then come in for a fitting with the hair and makeup trial. It’s also a good chance to try out the veil to make sure all the final pieces come together. If you are having a tryout for your bouquet, bring it in at this point. Then you can check that everything is perfect. Don’t be afraid to point out details that you want to be tweaked. And when you have your final fitting, do bring a bottle of chilled champagne and your best friend and/or your mother to soak in the fun of it all!

Marjon: I'm inspired by so many women these days. Chloë Sevigny, Solange, Diana Vreeland, Miriam Makeba, Diane Kruger, Michelle Elie. I respond to women with bite and intellect, who take chances, and seem supremely happy and secure within their own skin.

Jill: I've always loved Jane Birkin, Debbie Harry, and Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Right now I really into what Ursina Gysi is up to. She has the most original style and sensibility that I've seen in a long time?—a little sporty and a little '70s, while very "next".

What current trend can you not stand? 

Saada: The lack of women of colour on the runway.

Eva: As a hat enthusiast I would have to say the ongoing trend of hatless-ness!

Marjon: Peplum tops. It's been done.

If your closet could talk, what would it ask for this season?

Saada: A new winter coat! One that is versatile, can be worn with jeans and a tee, but can also be dressed up.

Jill: A pair of black Prada Spazzolato Fume Leather Sandals.

Marjon: All things Carven! She wants their entire Fall 2013 collection, and then some.

Much like throwing a moto jacket over a floral sundress to make the summer seem a little more endless, I’ll soothe my soul by jamming out to the synth jams of UK duo AlunaGeorge. Then I’ll channel Hit-Girl a.k.a. Chloe Grace Moretz in Kick-Arse 2, don my best uniform—Levi’s skinnies and a vintage white tee—and banish the bad guys (and by bad guys I mean refined sugar and gluten; August is cleanse time as well). The Civil Wars, The Civil Wars

Those of us who love the soothing twang of singer-songwriter country folk have been eagerly awaiting a new album from this duo, comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White. While they first made headlines with their critically adored (and ultimately Grammy-winning) album Barton Hollow, they blew up when they collaborated with Taylor Swift on “Safe & Sound,” the keystone of the first Hunger Games soundtrack. Sadly, The Civil Wars have dissolved their band, so this self-titled album will likely be their last.

Halcyon Days and Halcyon Days Deluxe, Ellie Goulding

If you’ve been living in the dark and haven’t heard the sweet, poppy “Lights,” by lovely sylph Ellie Goulding, you’re missing out. The hit has driven the British singer- songwriter to the top of the charts and earned equal love for follow-up anthem “Anything Can Happen.” This month, the blonde beauty—who has been brightening up red carpets with her bold style—drops Halcyon Days, half album/half EP, and the über edition Halcyon Days Deluxe, which feature a mix of new material and rereleases, including a song written by fun.’s Nate Ruess and a cover of Alt-J’s “Tessellate.” Goulding did perform her cover of Elton John’s “Your Song” at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Perhaps a lullaby to the young Prince George of Cambridge is next on her to-do list?

OK, so technically their album dropped on July 30th, but that’s August adjacent, and I had to give AlunaGeorge some love. I first stumbled across this amazing electro-R&B-pop duo (made up of the honey-voiced Aluna Francis and beats-master George Reid) when I was going through the BBC’s “Sound of ’13” finalists, and they blew my mind. With Body Music, this Brit pair delivers an album full of bouncy, smooth jams heavy on the synth, and light on the boredom. This is my favourite album of 2013!

Night Film

This sophomore effort from New York Times best-selling author Marisha Pessl (Special Topics in Calamity Physics) is the perfect summer read. When the daughter of a cult filmmaker is found dead in an abandoned warehouse of an apparent suicide, a wronged reporter takes on the case. Intrigue? Check. Noir? Check. Family drama? Check. Brilliant writing? Just like Pessl’s debut novel, Night Film is a fiction tour de force.

The West Coast has cornered the market on August’s most awesome music fests! First up: San Francisco’s Outside Lands (August 9th – 11th). This year’s big guns include Paul McCartney, Nine Inch Nails, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers and indie swooners Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Yeasayer, and The National. My faves? Milo Greene, Daughter, Wavves, and Surfer Blood. FYF Fest hits Los Angeles on August 24th and 25th, bringing Beach House, Solange, MGMT, and My Bloody Valentine—and over 50 other acts to L.A.’s State Historic Park. No dusty fields or oppressive heat? I’ve never been happier with my decision to skip Coachella this year!

Lake Bell wrote, directed, and starred in this Sundance film about one woman’s adventures in the strangely male-centric world of movie trailers. (Cue big, booming voice: “IN A WORLD WHERE…”) Bell, who is artfully funny—just check out her Twitter—crafts a sweet romantic comedy in her directorial debut.

Our favourite teen super heroine Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) dusts off her killer costume and bold purple wig for more epic adventures. In this sequel, crime-fighting vigilantes Kick-Arse (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his sidekick Hit-Girl (Moretz)—who comes out of a forced early retirement—return to, well, kick some more arse against super villain Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

Heir apparent to the Hunger Games throne? We’ll see. Of course it doesn’t hurt that this big-screen adaptation of the first instalment of the YA Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare stars lovely ingénue Lily Collins and her real-life boyfriend Jamie Campbell Bower. (I die for their combined lovely locks alone!)

Brie Larson

This 23-year-old first caught my attention as the spiky teen in Showtime’s now-canceled United States of Tara. She has since gone on to star as Channing Tatum’s lady love in 21 Jump Street and Michael Cera’s crazy ex in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Brie is also an amazing filmmaker, having written and directed shorts, including “The Arm” (alongside Sarah Ramos and Jesse Ennis), which screened at Sundance. This month she stars in the heartbreaking drama Short Term 12, which won both the Jury and Audience awards at this year’s SXSW. Bonus: Her red-carpet style is as multifaceted as her career.
