Los Angeles is known for its relaxed, sunshiny approach to style. It's often made up of simple wardrobe staples, and there's an ease to it. As I spent the month of May visiting, I found myself keeping an eye out for the trends people were actually wearing.

The first thing I noticed felt less like a trend and more in the realm of anti-trends: lots and lots of jeans. But I quickly realized the ones I kept clocking each had a bit of a je ne sais quoi to them, if you will. While we were at the Silver Lake Farmers Market one Saturday, my partner pointed out how many people were wearing basketball shorts. Further proving his observation, one of my best friends who lives in L.A. met up with us wearing a black pair with mid-calf boots.

I also went to a Charlie Beads pop-up at the DLR store, where silver ballet flats caught my attention. After that, I started noticing more and more non-black ballet flats, from baby pink to butter yellow.

Whilst what I’m about to confess to might not garner the famed New York-based critic and essayist's approval—little does, anyway—but I simply have to own up to the fact that when it comes to bottoms, skirts really are my preferred shape to wear.

Living in NYC, I have a rotation of go-to summer pieces. Anyone who's spent time in the city during the summer knows how grimy the humidity can feel, so most of what I wear this time of year has to be airy and easy to move in. This means a lot of tank tops and 100% cotton dresses and skirts.

If there’s one thing that has shocked my fashion-editor colleagues the most about me, it’s that I don’t currently own a pair of jeans. To be clear, I’ve owned and worn jeans in my lifetime, just not in recent years. Instead, I gravitate toward skirts and dresses, and my summer uniform is no exception.

In the warmer months, I’m drawn to natural materials like cotton and silk because they feel lightweight and breathable in the heat.
