Thirty seconds into our Zoom call, Bowen Yang waves off a compliment. "Don't look too closely," he demurs when I point out his artfully decorated bookshelf. "Half this stuff I haven't even read." It's a small window, but at that moment, I understand why every writer, costar, and industry peer makes a point of calling out the comedian's authentic, warm, and disarmingly humble charm despite his meteoric success. I didn't want to fall into the "[Insert star] is so down-to-earth!" trope, but I can confirm he absolutely is all of the above. In Estée Lauder's Guilty as Skin campaign, you're struggling with whether or not to gatekeep your skincare secret from the group chat. Do you and your friends often swap beauty recs, and are there any products in your current routine that you picked up because a friend put you on to them?

Unless I am missing out in a profound way and I just have very shallow friendships, we put this boundary up, and we keep our recs to ourselves. The only thing that we do swap is the various kinds of sunscreen technology breakthroughs because [we're in] situations where we share a house on summer vacation or something. There are certain products that are communal, that are just on the kitchen counter, let's say, in a "summer home" situation. That's all I could think of when I saw this question. I was like, "Oh no, are my friends not good friends?" [Laughs] It might be an elder millennial thing, but I mostly get my beauty stuff from content and algorithmically served things, which is a little dark. But I think everyone understands that beauty is so personal anyway.

Totally. Especially with skincare, everyone's skin is different. That's a good point about sunscreen too, especially if someone's traveling abroad. I'm always like, "Can you get me this sunscreen?!" because the ones in America are just not it.

Look, there's a million other things to legislate that are more important, but let's bump that up because I don't get why we do that.

If you could raid one friend's bathroom cabinet, who would it be, and why?

It would probably be Ego Nwodim's. Ariana [Grande] basically sends me her bathroom cabinet because I get a nice R.E.M. promo package every now and then, but that's not from her directly. I would never be so bold as to raid someone's bathroom cabinet. This is halfway to kleptomania! You can't! I have friends who are like, "Yeah, I looked at their medicine cabinet." I'm like, "No way. Red flag. Go on house-guest probation." But if I were to raid anyone's, it would probably be Ego Nwodim's. Probably Joel Kim Booster's, too, because he and I have similar phenotypes. Maybe genotypes, for all I know.

I read that you got really into skincare during the pandemic as a way to tie a bow on the whole day. What was your relationship like to skincare and beauty prior to that, or was that really the moment you started prioritizing it?

I think it was the moment that I understood it and then, therefore, prioritized it. In the past, it just seemed like one [piece] of the giant stack of things you were supposed to do at the end of the day, and it just felt obligatory, which cannot be anyone's relationship to it. Growing up in the aughts, it was all about these stringent actives and these peach- and apricot-related products that would completely… What's it called when you scrape the bottom of a river? It just dredges your skin.

Beauty overall is personal, but skincare especially is something that must be extremely bespoke and tailored to you. I was just going with the general application, so to speak, of skincare—like, "You're supposed to use this cleanser and this toner and this moisturizer at night"—and I did not get behind the science of it until the pandemic. Now, there's an infinite level of curiosity and depth to be found in this kind of thing. You can either engage with the science or just be like, "Oh, that's pretty packaging" or "That's cheap. I'll buy that." So it just opened my eyes to it.

Yeah, I feel like beauty and skincare encompass so many emotions. You can have fun and be playful with it, or you can dive into the science and get really into the nitty-gritty of it. I also read that you're doing your own makeup for Oh, Mary! and that you were still in the process of identifying where you wanted to go with it. Have you landed on that, and can you tell us anything about her look?

I've not landed on it because I still haven't gone into the theater to rehearse with the full costume and production of it. I've been running around in the skirt and the heels. I've been doing heel work for a long time. But [for makeup], I was saying maybe Kabuki… I think it's going to veer more toward Beijing opera. There's a slight shift there. The eyeliner is very pronounced, which I think makes sense for Mary Todd. Arches on the eyebrows are very high, very symmetrical, and circular. I think there is a bit of Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest [and] Bette Davis's makeup in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? There's something overapplied and overdrawn because she is a victim of her own malaise, and that's compensatory. You just have to go there on your canvas, as it were. But I think Beijing opera seems to have a decent overlap on the Venn diagram with the cabaret, which is what she loves. I'm still figuring that out. I also want to make it practical and not have to be too involved because, as you said, I have to do it on my own.

Are you learning technique, or are you just testing on your own and trying new things?

I'm watching stuff. I don't have the patience to test on my own. I'm like, "Tell me how to do it." But I will pick it up. Right now, I'm just trying to get off-book. Uh-oh, I hear you're supposed to do that. [Laughs]

I think it'll be a fun, big reveal once a production photograph will be taken. I have some time for now, but we'll see.

Well, I can't wait. I bought tickets for September 15, and I'm so excited.

Oh my god, first night!

First night! I just happened to be on Instagram when the news came out. I was scrolling, and one of the posts said "two minutes ago," and I was like, "This feels like fate. I need to buy tickets right now." So I dropped everything and bought them.

Jamie, I'm deeply flattered. It takes a lot these days for someone to see something being promoted and then be like, "I'm gonna add to cart." That means a lot. I can't wait.

I can't wait! But kind of related to that, is there anything about the character—either about her look or just portraying her—that surprised you after you signed on?

Okay, this is a Who What Wear exclusive. The wig that was in the promo shoot, people are making a lot out of the fact that it could potentially be the new show wig—that I asked for more length. No, no, no. If you go back and look at the promo photos for past Marys, it's just a different wig. There's the portrait wig, and then the show wig will be the bratty curls and what it's looked like on every single actor who's done it before.

What surprised me about her look is that it has to be incredibly durable. Actually, there's a lot of stuff in the construction of the gown that I don't have the knowledge to really get into. But it is both extremely regal in the sense that she's the First Lady, and there's a prestige to that, but then she is completely ceremonial and a little bit powerless to it. You know, she is a woman in America at that time. At the end of the day, even in the most powerful, hallowed room in the country at that time, she's still pretty powerless. I mean, the play is about her liberating herself from the man who ended slavery. It's so crazy how it all wends around these themes. As far as her look goes, she looks beautiful in a sense, but she's sort of despairing, and it's showing. It's a little bit ugly. It's a little bit vicious. That's the look.

To bring it back to skincare and beauty: You're used to working late nights from your time on SNL and now Broadway. Are you someone who will stick to a routine no matter how late it gets? You're in the bathroom, doing the steps…

Okay, this is the thing. This is a new point of discourse that we can have about skincare. A full cleanse at night is really tough because if you're splashing water on your face or putting a balm on, that wakes you up. You were on the train to Sleepy Town, and it was a really nice, smooth ride, and then all of a sudden, you hit a crazy speed bump or snag on the track by splashing water on your face and jolting your nervous system. Now, you've undone all this progress you've made in the wind-down to bed.

So no, the answer is I wish I was. Sometimes, I'll skip it, and it's really bad, but at the very least, I'll do a little mist and moisturizer. [Editor's note: Of course, Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Serum also makes it into the late-night rotation.] But I don't do it every night because sometimes I'm just like, "Wait, I'm already in bed. I'm already under the covers."

That's so true. It's essentially a cold plunge.

Okay, I'd love to play a little rapid-fire game where I list some of your characters, and then you tell me what their favorite beauty products would be. Let's start with Mary Todd Lincoln.

Well, this is a tiny spoil, but I think she would do a thick setting spray. But because her reading comprehension is not great, I think she just saw a label for azelaic acid and was like, "Oh, from flowers!" And she just wants to be floral, but it's not the right active for her at all.

I love it. What about Pfannee from Wicked?

Pfannee would do a crazy body scrub, body glitter because he's tacky and terrible, and layer on at least 10 fragrances with conflicting notes.

What about Howie from Fire Island?

I think he's really on top of his SPF. He likes a matte [formula]. He'll settle for a spray if that's all that's around, but he stocks up for the house. He gets at least six spray cans. He understands the environmental trade-off there, and he's not happy about it, but that's what he gets for the house.

And the Titanic iceberg?

Cold plunge, gua sha. I think he does any sort of face roller, even though he's ice, and it's not going to do anything.

He's already chiseled enough.

Exactly.

Okay, I have one more question. I am a "reader," so I have to ask: If you could give a Las Culturistas Culture Award to the best beauty moment of the year, what would it be?

Oh my God! Okay, Culture Award for beauty moment of the year goes to… Zendaya's beat throughout 2026. I mean, I can't even narrow it down to one.

I was literally going to say Zendaya! That's so funny.

I think we can all agree on that. There are no snubs. No one will feel like it was a rigged thing. No, that's the rightful winner.

And Lisa Rinna would do a great job portraying it at the award show.

Oh, then we're going to give an honorary Lifetime Achievement Award to Lisa Rinna's lips. At this point, for decades—not to put a date on her—she has been really providing a service for the world for as long as she's been working.

Fall's imminent return is glaringly obvious to me. Not just because there's suddenly an abundance of back-to-school advertisements and military jackets everywhere the eye can see in New York City, but because I'm already feeling the beauty editor itch to revamp my seasonal skincare routine. Even though the weather isn't quite matching up with long-sleeved styles just yet, everyone seems to be anticipating the return of autumn—though what I'm not looking forward to is the dull state my skin eventually fades into when the sun becomes scarce. From celebrity brands to your mother’s favorite line, everyone was injecting pearlescent pigment into their skin products. But where, oh where, was the skincare?

This is the question Priscilla Tsai, founder of budget-, inclusivity-, and eco-conscious skincare brand Cocokind, asked herself as glowy products promising the look of quenched skin continued to fall flat when it came to actual nourishment. My Review

I own a fair share of the internet's favorite glow-enhancing makeup bases, from Rhode's Highlight Milk to L'Oréal's Lumi Glotion. While my plentiful collection offers instant radiance and comforting hydration, I couldn't say that any of these formulas felt truly weightless on my skin. That was, until I tried this featherlight serum.

As a beauty editor with combination skin I get to live the best of both worlds when it comes to my skincare. In the summer, I take on the routine of someone who has oily skin. How often should people with dry skin wash their face?

When you think of a traditional "by the book" skincare routine, you may assume that you have to wash you face day and night. For dry skin though, Lee suggests only once in the evening to remove makeup, sunscreen, oil, and buildup. Then in the morning, stick to just rinsing your face with warm or room temperature water.

Palep adds that washing your face can look like a single cleanser or a double cleanse using one oil-based and one water-based cleanser in that order. "Limiting a full wash to once a day at night ensures you get the day’s “gunk” off your face, and eliminates stripping off the skin’s natural oils," she says.

First up, let's talk skincare routines. Whilst my complexion was relatively happy during the warmer months, it suddenly seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Turns out, this is pretty common. "The seasons can definitely have an impact on our skin barrier," says Dr Jason Thomson, consultant dermatologist and head of medical at Skin + Me. "As we move from summer into autumn, the combination of colder weather outside and central heating indoors can mean the skin loses more moisture. It might start to feel tight, dry or flaky. People with sensitive or eczema-prone skin may also notice more irritation or flare-ups."

That said, Dr Thomson tells me that it doesn't mean we have to change our routine completely. "The foundations I recommend are simple: cleanse, treat, hydrate and protect." Whilst your treatment step (and SPF) may remain the same, for example, a retinol or vitamin C serum, it might be your cleanser and moisturiser that need adjusting at this time of year.

"I would swap out a lighter moisturiser for a richer one, and perhaps use a gentler cleanser over an exfoliating one (which may be better tolerated during summer months)," adds Dr Beibei, dermatologist and ambassador for skincare brand Simple.

In terms of ingredients, Dr Thomson recommends looking out for ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide and centella asiatica. "They work in slightly different ways, but all can play a useful role in hydrating, soothing or supporting the skin barrier," he says. "Skin + Me’s Soothe + Smooth Rich Moisturiser is one option I like because it contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid, allantoin and shea butter. CeraVe Moisturising Cream is another good, widely available choice for dry skin. If someone is experiencing particularly dry or irritated patches, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ can be useful as a more targeted layer."

Summer-to-Autumn Haircare

As mentioned, my hair is looking dry and frazzled, and my colour has certainly seen better days. "By the end of summer, our hair has usually experienced months of UV exposure, heat, humidity, chlorine and salt water. These can deplete moisture, roughen the cuticle and cause colour to fade, leaving the hair feeling dry, dull and more prone to breakage," explains Luke Pluckrose, lead stylist at TRESemmé Professional. "Autumn is the perfect time to reset your routine and replenish the moisture lost throughout summer." So, how do we do this?

"I recommend starting with a small trim to remove dry or split ends, then introducing more intensive hydration into your weekly routine," Pluckrose tells me. "Once a week, replace your usual conditioner with the TRESemmé Professional Hydra Molecular Moisture Treatment Mask. Apply it mainly through the mid-lengths and ends and leave it on for three minutes to give dry areas a more intensive moisture boost."

Aside from a hydrating hair mask, I'll also be reaching for a purple shampoo once a week to help banish brassiness, alongside a hair gloss to boost shine.

Summer-to-Autumn Nail Care

I went to my nail appointment the other week to get my gels taken off and give them a breather, and I was quite surprised by just how weak they were. Months of colourful nail art and gel manicures have definitely taken their toll, and I'm ready to give my nails a reset. "After travelling, spending time in the sea or pool, and being exposed to sun and heat, it’s often the skin around the nails that needs the most attention," says the expert team at one of my favourite luxury nail salons, So.Shell. "Autumn is a great time to focus on hydration — I recommend using cuticle oil daily, as well as a nourishing hand cream, especially one containing urea, to keep the skin soft and prevent dryness."

According to the expert team at So.Shell, consistency is key. "Apply cuticle oil at least once a day — ideally before bed — and massage it into the cuticles and the skin around the nails. Keep your hands moisturised and wear gloves when using cleaning products or when your hands are exposed to water for long periods."

Another reason your nails might not be feeling their best is if you've worn gel polish for longer than recommended. After a very busy summer, I'm definitely guilty of this one, but luckily, the experts have some great advice. "If a client has experienced significant damage, we may recommend taking a break from gel enhancements while the damaged part of the nail grows out. During this time, we focus on keeping the nails short, protected and well moisturised with cuticle oil and nourishing products."

I'll be investing in some at-home autumn nail polishes, such as Chanel's Rouge Noir, until I'm ready to book in at So.Shell once again.

Summer-to-Autumn Bodycare

Last but not least, let's talk body care. I feel like this step is often overlooked, but after a summer of UV exposure, salt water, chlorine and more, our skin is definitely in need of some TLC. "I treat the skin below my neck exactly as I would my face –particularly the décolletage, shoulders, arms, hands and legs, which have often accumulated significant UV exposure," says Dr Anna Persaud, This Works CEO and biochemist. "The neck and décolletage deserve particular attention because they accumulate UV exposure but are often neglected. I use the This Works Perfect Cleavage and Neck Serum across my neck, chest and shoulders for antioxidant and firming support."

Another thing you can add to your routine? Red light therapy. "Photobiomodulation using red and near-infrared wavelengths is interesting after periods of increased UV exposure because it can support cellular energy production and the skin’s own repair processes, while helping to modulate inflammation and support collagen and skin resilience," Dr Persaud tells me. If you've been thinking about it, now might be the time to invest in an at-home LED device.

Alongside these recommendations, I always try to incorporate some kind of scrub to get rid of all that dead skin, alongside lots of hydrating body lotions, serums and oils. "Vitamin C is another important part of my post-summer routine, and I use it on my body day and night," adds Dr Persaud. "I use the This Works Perfect Body Vit C Glow."

Around this time of year, I like to switch out my summer scents for autumnal fragrances, and this goes for my bodycare, too. Gone are my coconut and vanilla shower gels and body creams, replaced by fresh, crisp, invigorating delights.

As I'm a girlie who loves her vitamin C, it's almost painful to type this, but I think I've found something even more next-level. *Gasp.* While vitamin C has become the gold standard for concerns like dullness, rough texture, dark spots, and generally lackluster skin, I recently got around to trying Mara's Pearl Peptide Glaze ($54), and IMHO, it eclipses all other brightening products I own. My Review

As I mentioned above, the consistency of this product is just *chef's kiss.* It's so hydrating and delicious for the skin but doesn't feel heavy or greasy. If you're an oily or acne-prone person, you know the struggle. Some essences are just a bit too much for our skin, but I'm in love with the way this one adds a dewy glow without making the skin look shiny. This effect definitely speaks to its artful formulation. It's not an easy balance to strike, but Mara has done it!

Most importantly, the ingredient list isn't five miles long, so it didn't upset my super-sensitive skin. In fact, it did just the opposite. I'm prone to redness at times because my skin barrier isn't in the best shape, but beta-glucan is one of my all-time favorite skincare ingredients that's severely underhyped. It calms redness in minutes, so it's the perfect skincare ingredient if you're struggling with an inflamed breakout. It also hasn't caused any new breakouts—it's just given me a gorgeous glow. In fact, I've gotten asked, "What are you using on your skin lately?" at least five times now that I'm using this. The ultimate compliment! I look forward to putting it on every morning and evening. When I do use it in the evening, I wake up with skin that looks like I just got a luxury facial.

Hailey Bieber's skin and makeup routines are chock-full of Rhode staples (well, duh) but the beauty mogul isn't afraid to give other brands their flowers. Case in point? This lotion, though, has extra skin-firming powers thanks to drosera ramentacea extract, which has been shown to reduce fat tissue—a 12% visible reduction, to be exact, according to the brand's four-week clinical trial.

This likely goes without saying, but allow me to make it crystal clear while we're here: There is nothing "wrong" with cellulite (or stretch marks or any sort of skin dimpling). If you are a living, breathing human, there's a solid chance you have it! There is also no topical that can 100% eliminate it forever, but if the texture does bother you, creams like this can temporarily ease the appearance. Firming abilities aside, this cream also evens tone and, of course, deeply hydrates, which also makes it a worthy end-of-summer buy.

Then we have Bieber's second staple: Nuxe's SPF 30 spray. French pharmacy fans, you likely know and love the brand for its Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil, which drenches your limbs in a non-greasy glow and smells downright heavenly. Editors always make sure to pick up a Nuxe staple (or three) whenever they find themselves in France, and it seems Bieber also falls into that camp. Alas, the SPF spray isn't available stateside just yet, but I did find a cream version at Walmart you can buy in the meantime.

I’ve always had a bit of a lip balm addiction. There’s always one on my bedside table, one (or three) in my handbag, a couple in my desk drawer and, much to the frustration of my husband, a few more scattered chaotically around the house. And whilst autumn’s arrival feels like a natural time to talk about the best ones—traditionally the weather starts to cool, and the air feels a little more harsh—I’ve found that dry, chapped lips can be just as much of a summer problem as they are an autumn and winter one. Emerging from a season of pretty intense heat and sun exposure, I’ve found that my lips are already feeling chapped, tight and flaky. Which is why I’ve been on a quest to find the best lip balms for dry lips.

For me, a good lip balm is less of a nice-to-have and more of a daily beauty essential, and the best ones are those that genuinely make a difference to the condition of my lips long-term. Plus, I’m fickle, so while they do need to deliver on intense hydration and rich moisture, I’m partial to ones that also smell amazing and look great too. I’ve tried hundreds over the years, but before we get into the ones I’m willing to pay genuine lip service to, I wanted to know exactly what causes dry lips and how we should be looking after them.

What Causes Dry Lips?

Unsurprisingly, dry lips are one of the most common skin issues. “It’s because the skin on our lips is much thinner and doesn't have the same oil glands as the rest of our skin, so it loses moisture more easily,” explains aesthetic nurse and founder of R&R Aesthetics, Caroline Hall. “Cold weather, sun exposure, air conditioning, dehydration and repeatedly licking your lips can all make it worse.” However, Hall does mention that if you are experiencing persistent or extreme dryness then it could point to an underlying issue like an allergy (to skincare or even toothpaste) or a condition like eczema. “Lips that are continually cracked, sore or inflamed are worth getting checked rather than simply applying more lip balm,” she advises.

How to Choose the Best Lip Balm

It seems that the key to choosing an efficacious lip balm is to spend a bit of time looking at the ingredients list. Hall recommends choosing a balm that contains ingredients that both add moisture and help to seal it in. Her top pick? Good old-fashioned petrolatum: yes, that’s Vaseline. “Petrolatum is one of the simplest and most effective options for reducing moisture loss, while ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides and squalane can help soften and support the skin barrier.” For daytime use, rather than an overnight treatment, Hall also suggests looking for a lip balm with SPF to combat UV exposure, which can cause dry and damaged lips.

As for any ingredients to avoid? “I’d be careful with anything that makes your lips tingle, sting or feel particularly cooling. Ingredients like menthol, camphor and some fragrances may actually irritate already dry or cracked lips,” Hall explains. She also recommends avoiding lip scrubs or exfoliators when lips are very dry. “If the skin barrier is already damaged, repeatedly exfoliating it can make the problem worse,” she says.

1. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume Lips

When my lips are really struggling—particularly during instances where I've been unwell and I'm dehydrated, or I've spent a lot of time outdoors—then this is the lip balm that I always come back to. Rather than a glossy balm or tinted formula, it's a real barrier-focused product that feels like it really tackles repairing compromised lips and helps restore their health. It has quite a thick texture that really coats the lips and helps to take the sting out of any particularly dry or uncomfortable patches, yet it isn't sticky in the slightest. It's a great option to keep by your bed and apply generously overnight, just because it does have that thicker consistency that makes it feel more like a treatment, but it would make a decent everyday option too if you really struggle with dry or very chapped lips.

2. Mecca Cosmetica Lip De-Luscious SPF20

I’m a big believer that lip balm should ideally come with SPF, particularly because it’s an area that’s very easy to forget when applying sunscreen. And as someone who has actually burnt their lips in the past, I am well aware of just how sore they can be. Mecca Cosmetica’s Lip De-Luscious is the balm that I've been reaching for most during the heatwaves this summer for that very reason—it contains SPF 20. Plus, it's also packed with shea butter, plant oils and vitamin E so it doesn't compromise on hydration either. It's moisturising yet feels lightweight, and delivers the prettiest pink sheen to lips so I tend to skip my usual lip glosses and lipsticks when I wear this. The pot is robust enough to chuck into handbags and beach bags too, yet it's pleasingly weighty so feels quite luxurious when you take it out to reapply too.

I’m always sceptical of lip products that promise plumper-looking lips, and have always hated those intensely tingling glosses that practically burn your lips into looking more full. However, this one from Alpha-H has only recently landed on my doorstep, but I've been wearing it every day since. While the peppermint oil does give a slightly refreshing tingle, it's the science-backed peptides that really do the heavy lifting when it comes to plumping and smoothing lips. Plus, it uses plant-based lanolin sodium hyaluronate to deeply hydrate, so not only do my lips end up looking subtly more full and juicy, but they feel genuinely moisturised too. It's great worn alone, but I particularly love it as a base for lipstick to get that really cushioned, smooth look.

Even if it's just a subtle wash, I rarely step out of the house without some kind of tint on my lips so I'm always going to be tempted by a lip balm that offers both hydration and colour. It’s definitely not the prettiest lip product in my collection, and the texture is much more ointment-like than a traditional balm, but when it comes to rescuing dry lips, it delivers.

I'm now 37, and getting older is undoubtedly a factor in how dry my lips can be. When you think of the ultimate skincare secret weapon for smooth, even skin, retinol may be one of the first things that come to mind. To be fair, I have yet to come across a skincare expert that doesn't swear by it. But if you've ever felt like your retinol doesn't quite work as efficiently as you'd hoped, you may want to consider a more potent option. That's where tretinoin comes into play.

"Tretinoin cream is a derivative of vitamin A and a topical retinoid," says board-certified dermatologist and founder of Luma Dermatology Nupur Patel, MD. "In a skincare world full of equal parts clever marketing, fear-mongering, and science, it is an ingredient that has undergone real scientific scrutiny and stood the test of time."

While it's helpful for those who struggle with stubborn acne, but it's also become popular for treating other skin concerns like fine lines, uneven texture, hyperpigmentation, and clogged pores. So what's the best way to incorporate this into your skincare routine? Find your step-by-step guide below with all the details.

How is tretinoin different from retinol?

The main difference to note is the potency. "Tretinoin is prescription-strength, pure retinoic acid that works directly at the cellular level, while retinol is an over-the-counter derivative that has to be converted by the skin twice, which makes it much gentler," explains Patel.

She adds that all retinoids need to turn into retinoic acid to begin affecting our cells. With retinol, there's a two-step process that has to take place (this is something your skin handles once the retinol interacts with your skin's enzymes). With tretinoin, it's already in it's most active form. That said, it's important to keep in mind that a stronger formula isn't always better. "Retinol can be a great starting point for sensitive skin or someone new to retinoids," says board-certified plastic surgeon Maryam Zamani, MD. "Ultimately, the best retinoid is one you can tolerate and use consistently."

How to Use Tretinoin in Your Skincare Routine

Step 1: Cleanse

The first step to any skincare routine if you wear makeup starts with the removal process. You can use a micellar water or a makeup removing cleanser. "Try an oil-based cleanser applied to dry skin and then rinse with warm water," says Patel. "Follow with micellar water on a cotton pad for tougher areas like eye makeup."

If you're not wearing makeup, you should still be cleansing (it's a non-negotiable!). Patel recommends a gentle formula like the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser or Prequel’s Gleanser.

Step 2: Follow up with a serum

If you haven't invested in a serum you like, this is your sign. This can be especially helpful if your skin tends to feel dry or tight after cleansing, but Patel warns that those with oily skin or rosacea should skip it. "For some skin types, simple is more effective," she says. "For dryness, use a peptide serum with hyaluronic acid on damp skin to give back what you just stripped away."

Step 4: Moisturizer

Think of your moisturizer as the MVP of your tretinoin skincare routine. You'll need to do this step twice for the "sandwich method" (more on that below), so it's really important to get clear on what kind of moisturizer works best for your skin type. This can be particularly tricky for those with oily skin. "With oilier or more sebaceous skin and no sensitivity, I would use La Roche-Posay Toleriane or Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cream," says Patel.

Step 5: Tretinoin

Whether you plan on using tretinoin or a retinol, this is where you use the retinoid of your choice. Once the moisturizer absorbs, use a pea-sized amount, and apply it to your whole face. Zamani notes that you should avoid the eyelids, corners of the nose, and mouth during application. Then, prepare to go back in with your moisturizer.

Step 6: Moisturize again

This step is technically optional, but there's a method to the madness here. "I like the "sandwich" technique of using moisturizer, tretinoin, then another light layer of moisturizer," says Zamani. This can help reduce sensitivity, making it great for all skin types but especially for those with dry and sensitive skin.

Your morning routine will be a lot more straightforward, but there should be a major emphasis around using sun protection (ideally SPF 50 or higher). "Sunscreen matters enormously if you are using a retinoid at night, because retinoids make your skin more sun-sensitive," explains Patel.

But before using sun protection, start by rinsing your face with water. If you have oil or scne-prone skin, Patel recommends using a gentle cleanser instead. If you can tolerate it, Zamani suggests adding add on an antioxidant-like vitamin C, followed my moisturizer and SPF.

What concentration of tretinoin is best?

There's no one size fits all approach for tretinoin. That said, it usually comes in three different strengths: 0.025%, 0.05% and 0.1%. "I typically prefer to start patients at the lower end and increase only as tolerated," says Zamani. Ultimately, the strength you need will be determined between you and your dermatologist.

What Are the Side Effects of Tretinoin?

Similar to retinol, there are a few side effects you may experience that are worth keeping an eye out for. This includes:

"Some of this is common during the adjustment period, and with the right strength and proper counseling, it is usually manageable," says Patel. "A good routine is built around fitting the tretinoin to the individual patient’s skin type."

How often should you use it?

Now that you have the key steps for incorperating tretinoin into your routine, you're probably wondering how often you need to use it to reap the benefits. Spoiler: it's not every night...well, at least not at first.

"The best retinoid is the one you can use nightly," says Patel. "The goal is to use it every night without irritation." Key phrase here "without irritation," and that doesn't happen right away for most people. Zamani recommends that patients start by using tretinoin two nights per week and then slowly increasing the frequency every four to six weeks or as the skin tolerates it, noting that starting too aggressively can cause skin irritation. If you're still concerned about skin sensitivity, it's best to get specific guidance from your dermatologist.

What should you avoid while using tretinoin?

Before starting tretinoin, keep in mind that you may have to make some adjustments to your current routine to prevent irritation and damage to the skin barrier. For example, you'll want to skip on any AHA or BHA chemical exfoliants in addition to physical exfoliants. As previously mentioned, you should avoid sun exposure without adequate protection. You should also avoid tretinoin entirely if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. For other specific concerns, talk with your dermatologist.

As a beauty editor, I can't help but align my routine with the seasons. In winter, I bring out the best cold-weather skincare products. (Bodycare is a big part of that.) I've been consistently using retinol serums for close to three years, but this summer, I hit pause for two reasons. First, I simplified my skincare routine due to a few unwelcome rosacea flare-ups, and my retinol didn't make the cut. Second, retinol speeds up cell turnover, which makes your skin more susceptible to sun damage. Despite diligent sunscreen use, I didn't want to risk that, as I knew I'd be spending so much time at the beach.

Now that I'm off the beach and out of the sun (for the most part), I'm dialing back into my retinol routine. I want all the extraordinary anti-aging effects, and I wouldn't mind if it fades some accidental post-summer sun damage either.

Dermatologists recommend starting slow. Most suggest using it only once or twice a week, at night, and building up from there. I, for one, will be using it twice per week to start, eventually getting back to my standard three times a week in mid-to-late fall. I'll use a pea-sized amount for my whole face, apply it to dry skin, wait a few minutes for it to absorb, and follow up with moisturizer. This is the best bet for minimizing irritation, dryness, and redness.

I only trust a small number of retinol serums, and Skinceuticals' Retinol 1.0 Maximum Strength Refining Night Cream ($102) is one of them. It's expensive, but it's high-grade and lasts forever. My previous tube lasted me about a year, and I saw quick improvements in my skin.

Most people think their skin gets dry in the fall because temperatures drop. That's true, but it's only part of the whole picture. You also need to consider changes in humidity. In the fall, there's less moisture in the air, which means your skin is vulnerable to Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). This is when the skin loses moisture, as it evaporates into the air. It's also the reason why your skin can feel so dry after a long flight, but I digress.

To prevent TEWL, you can swap your lightweight gel moisturizers for thicker, richer, more occlusive ones. It all depends on your skin type (acne-prone people will want to avoid anything too rich), but it's a good rule of thumb to follow. I, for one, stock up on mid-weight moisturizers to use during the day, and thick, occlusive ones to use at night, almost like an overnight mask.

All three experts agree that mineral sunscreens are best for rosacea, rather than chemical formulas. "Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide sit on the surface of the skin and reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them, making them much less likely to cause irritation or trigger a flare," Mehdi says. "Many people with rosacea already have a compromised skin barrier, so choosing a gentle, nonirritating sunscreen can make a noticeable difference in keeping redness under control."

However, Tran says it's better to use any sunscreen than no sunscreen, so if you'd rather skip mineral for chemical, feel free to do so. "The best sunscreen is ultimately the one you'll wear consistently," Tran says. "If a chemical sunscreen is well tolerated and broad-spectrum, it's still far better than skipping sunscreen altogether."

My Review

I'll preface this review by saying that I was already a huge fan of Peach & Lily before trying this cream. I have a lot of trust in Yoon and her products because they're thoughtfully formulated for sensitive, acne-prone skin. Everything in Peach & Lily's line is designed to be effective, noncomedogenic, and glow inducing—my kind of products!

I'll also admit that I've never quite been sold on the whole zombie cell conversation in beauty. After all, shouldn't a good retinoid solve the issue of old, damaged cells? I'm no scientist, though, so what do I know? I've dealt with skin damage for a while after a bad five-year run with tretinoin, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to give this one a go to see if it helps.

My first impression upon trying this cream was that it's definitely a little thicker than your average moisturizer, but it does give you a really nice glow. This is something to keep in mind if your skin is highly acne prone. While Peach & Lily products have never once broken me out, it's a thicker moisturizer that might be more suited for the colder months. That said, though, after only a few days of use, I noticed really solid radiance in my skin that definitely wasn't there before. I should also note that I'm 33 and don't have any serious deep sagging or wrinkles, so I can't speak too much to what it does there.

While I did notice a nice overall glow after using this for a month, I can't really say that my skin issues stemmed from zombie cells. I didn't notice a crazy difference in my skin overall or a change in barrier health (my main concern) after using it for a little over a month. I do, however, think this is a fabulous cream for mature skin or those dealing with signs of premature aging. It's nice and rich, and people with those skin types will probably notice more of a difference in deeper wrinkles. Overall, this is a great cream and not a bad price for an innovative, targeted treatment. A lot of skincare products take much longer than one month to show visible results, so that's something else I'm noting here. I really like this cream and will continue to use it, but it may require patience if you're looking to buy it for specific visible skin concerns.

What are Korean face masks?

In short, these face masks are developed by Korean skincare brands or inspired by Korean skincare practices. "Sheet masks are probably the most well-known type of facial mask, but masks also come in many other forms including cream, hydrogel, clay, sleeping, bubble, and rinse-off masks," says Queen. "They attempt to address common concerns including hydration, glow, barrier support, and skin clarity by delivering concentrated ingredients to target specific skin goals."

How are Korean face masks different from other face masks?

If you've ever questioned what it is about Korean face masks that make them so good, the first place to look are the ingredients. "Many Korean masks emphasize hydration and soothing ingredients over strong exfoliants or other stripping active ingredients," says Queen.

Min adds that these face masks are also an extension of the larger Korean skincare philosophy, which tends to emphasize hydration, maintaining a healthy skin barrier, and addressing inflammation before it becomes a bigger problem. Additionally, K-beauty masks are also more sophisticated with many of the formulas focusing on specific needs (ex: barrier repair, pigmentation, dehydration, etc.) rather one generic "hydrating mask."

Then, there's price point. "As a Korean American plastic surgeon, one cultural difference I notice is that Koreans don't necessarily think of a face mask as an occasional luxury or spa treatment—it can be a very routine part of skincare," says Min. "Because it's treated as routine skincare rather than exclusively as a luxury treatment, there is tremendous competition to make formulas that are elegant and affordable."
