As an esthetician, one of the questions I'm asked more than almost any other is, "How do I get rid of my pores?" It's an understandable concern—after all, smooth, poreless skin is everywhere on social media—but it's also based on one of the biggest misconceptions in skincare. The truth is, you can't actually get rid of your pores. Pores are tiny openings in the skin that allow sebum (oil) and sweat to reach the surface, helping to keep skin healthy and functioning as it should. Every single person has them, and despite what many products claim, they can't be opened, closed or erased.

With that said, pores can absolutely appear larger or more noticeable. Genetics and lifestyle play a huge role in determining pore size, but excess oil production, congestion, sun damage, and a loss of collagen and elasticity can also make them look more prominent. As dermatologist Sonia Khorana explains, people with oily skin often find that "their pores may be more visible or enlarged," alongside increased shine, blackheads, and breakouts. Fortunately, while you can't shrink a pore permanently, you can make it appear much less noticeable. What to Look for

The best pore-minimising toners don't actually minimise the size of your pores; they minimise the things that make them look more noticeable. Which formula is right for you depends largely on what's causing your pores to stand out in the first place.

If excess oil and congestion are your main concerns, look for salicylic acid (BHA), one of the gold-standard ingredients for oily skin. Because it's oil-soluble, it can penetrate inside the pore to dissolve excess sebum and dead skin cells that stretch pores and lead to blackheads. Khorana recommends salicylic acid for helping to regulate sebum production, alongside niacinamide, zinc and retinoids.

Niacinamide is another excellent ingredient to prioritise. As well as helping to regulate oil production, it supports the skin barrier and can improve overall skin texture, making pores appear less obvious over time. If your skin is oily but also sensitive, gentler exfoliating acids such as lactic acid or mandelic acid can offer similar smoothing benefits with a lower risk of irritation.

Hydration is equally important, even if your skin is oily. "Remember not to be very harsh with your skin as it can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to skin dryness and sensitivity," says Khorana. Ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and ceramides help maintain healthy hydration levels, while supporting the skin barrier. This is particularly important because dehydrated skin can often compensate by producing even more oil, making pores appear more noticeable.

How to Use Pore-Minimising Toners

Pore-minimising toners should be applied after cleansing and before serums and moisturiser. Most formulas are designed to be swept over clean skin using your hands or a cotton pad, although always follow the brand's instructions, as some exfoliating formulas are intended for less frequent use.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is overusing exfoliating toners in the hope of seeing faster results. Whilst ingredients like salicylic acid and AHAs can be incredibly effective, using them too often can disrupt the skin barrier, leading to irritation, dehydration and even increased oil production. If you're using an exfoliating toner, start by applying it two to three times a week before gradually increasing if your skin tolerates it well. Hydrating or barrier-supporting toners, on the other hand, can usually be used morning and evening. It's not uncommon for specific skincare ingredients to become the object of internet obsession. Remember when skincare brands first introduced hyaluronic acid as a hydrating hero? My Review

First things first. Since I can't furrow my brows when I squint, my outer eye muscles compensate, which has led to a slight 'crow's feet' effect. I hoped this serum would improve that area of my skin specifically, although I also hoped I'd see a visible difference in my 'tech neck,' too. (Since I spend all day sitting at a computer, I've definitely lost elasticity and developed fine lines in that area as well.)

Whenever I'm building a skincare routine for clients, I follow one simple principle: every product should have a clear purpose. With the ability to fade dark spots and brighten the skin, boost collagen synthesis and reduce fine lines and texture, vitamin C plays a crucial role in accelerating cell turnover and repairing the skin barrier.

But with so many on the market, it can be hard to decide which serums are actually worth investing in. And as someone with Black skin, finding the right formula that won’t cause my melanin to react to the harsh acids and worsen inflammation and hyperpigmentation is an even bigger challenge.

Well, never fear. I decided to get the real answers from a professional to help guide those of us with Black skin around the world of vitamin C, providing clarity on which formulas to invest in, how to use them, and what results to expect. What Is Vitamin C?

Dr Sommerlad says, "Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant. In skincare, it neutralises free radical damage reactive oxidative species) from UV radiation and pollution, while supporting collagen synthesis and inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme driving eumelanin production. For these reasons, it is considered a brightening agent that can help reduce hyperpigmentation."

It has several different forms in skincare:

• L-ascorbic acid: the original, purest, least stable and most potent (but potentially irritating) form of vitamin C.
• Ascorbyl glucoside: the most stabilised form, which is commonly seen in entry-level formulas.
• Tetrahexydecyl ascorbate or THD for short: which is highly effective, low irritant, and highly stable.

Is Vitamin C Safe for Black Skin?

"Vitamin C is considered generally safe and beneficial for Black skin. Because melanin-rich skin is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, its antioxidant and tyrosinase-inhibiting properties make it an important feature of maintaining an even and radiant complexion. My caution is to avoid high concentrations of L-ascorbic acid (20%) without a patch test, as it can cause irritation that may lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation," explains Dr Sommerlad.

How Long Until I See Results From Vitamin C?

"Think of vitamin C as a way of maintaining luminous, even skin rather than a “treatment” for hyperpigmentation. If you do have dark spots, treat hyperpigmentation first, then use vitamin C to maintain the results. It takes several months of consistent use to see improvement. Remember to be patient; avoid using too many products at the same time, and, as always, sun protection is a must."

What Ingredients Should I Avoid Using With Vitamin C?

"Avoid combining vitamin C with retinoids or strong exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) in the same routine initially, as this can destabilise it and increase irritation risk. Benzoyl peroxide can also cause vitamin C to oxidise, making it less effective. To be safe, you should introduce actives separately, alternating mornings and evenings."

After a difficult infertility journey, French Farmacie founder Tricia Marlowe found solace in smaller daily rituals that helped her build resilience. "Along the way, I noticed a real improvement in my skin, and that curiosity led me into research on how ingredients and daily rituals influence skin and overall health, drawing on my master's [degree] in psychology and my background in biotech and diagnostics," she shared.

French pharmacies were also on her radar long before she started her brand. "Whenever I made it to Paris, I'd go with a list of products to check out," she said. "Their philosophy of restraint and a daily commitment to the skin's long-term health, not quick fixes, is what really spoke to me. That's the approach I wanted to build French Farmacie around."

The brand is known for its simple lineup that packs a punch. One of its most intriguing formulas is the Alchemy Serum ($200). While regenerative ingredients might seem trendy at the moment, she believes it's just the start of a new long-game model in skincare. "Modern skincare is shifting toward regeneration, supporting the skin's ability to repair its barrier, turn over cells, and hold onto hydration so it can strengthen itself over time," she added. "That pairs naturally with the French pharmacy philosophy of working with skin rather than against it. Mimétique

Mimétique is another exciting brand at the forefront of this shift. It recently became Violet Grey approved, which quickly caught my attention. Founded by Fabienne Sebaoun, a French cosmetic chemist, its products are designed to stimulate the skin's natural regeneration process fast. "I come from a family of dermatologists, so science has always been my language," Sebaoun told me. "I worked with some incredible skincare brands over the years, then I moved to Canada in 2015—right when the clean beauty movement hit its peak [with] ingredients to ban, fear-first marketing. To be honest, I felt completely lost in the noise, so I went back to basics. What does skin actually need? What does it actually produce? I enrolled back at university at almost 40 to find out."

It was here that Sebaoun discovered skin mimicry in a biochemistry class, the idea that your skin is already its own best technology. "The science clicked immediately, but I was not ready to launch a brand yet," she said. It's a simple yet incredibly interesting premise. Sebaoun explained a little bit more about why exactly it works: "Skin already knows what to do. It just makes less of what it needs over time, so we give it back exactly that. Instead of layering on actives, we build formulas around skin-identical molecules, the same peptides and lipids your skin already produces. That is the whole logic behind our SMR-C5 complex. It is not one ingredient. It is five skin-identical actives working together, and in clinical testing, it increased procollagen I production by 28%. The Formula

Whilst I like to use this to amp up my makeup, it's a skincare product through and through. Made with the brand's Glazing Milk formula, it has a lightweight, milky texture and is packed with ceramides, vitamin E and glycerin to hydrate and boost the skin's barrier.

The Shades

At the moment, I'm using shade 02; however, during the winter months, I can see myself switching to 01 for my everyday makeup look.

The Application

What I love about the Highlight Milk is how versatile it is. There are so many ways to use it, but let me talk you through a few of my favourites. If I'm having a "no makeup" makeup day, I apply this all over the skin before going in with concealer and a bit of cream bronzer. Just using these three products makes a huge difference to my complexion, and it's actually the makeup look that earns me the most compliments on my skin.

As an esthetician, I notice that some skincare questions come up time and time again, no matter what time of year it is. Alongside how to treat hormonal acne and what to do about enlarged pores, one of the topics clients are often most embarrassed to ask about is bum acne. The reality? It may not be visible, but it's actually incredibly common.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that every bump on your bottom is actually acne. While it can certainly happen, many cases are caused by something else entirely, which is why copying your facial acne routine onto your body doesn't always deliver the results you're hoping for. Identifying what's really going on is the first—and arguably most important—step towards clearer skin.

The good news is that once you understand the cause, bum breakouts are often very manageable. A few targeted skincare ingredients, some simple tweaks to your daily routine and avoiding some common mistakes can make a noticeable difference. And as with most skin concerns, consistency is far more important than reaching for the strongest treatment you can find.

Ahead, dermatologist Sonia Khorana has helped me to answer the questions I'm asked most frequently by clients, from what actually causes bum acne to the ingredients that are genuinely worth using and the everyday habits that could be making flare-ups better—or worse.

What Causes Bum Acne?

The first thing I explain to clients is that what they're calling "bum acne" often isn't acne at all. According to Khorana, "It's important to remember, it may not be true acne." In many cases, the culprit is actually folliculitis—an inflammation of the hair follicles that's commonly triggered by bacteria, yeast, sweat, or friction. It tends to appear as small red bumps, sometimes with a whitehead, clustered around individual hair follicles.

Another common possibility is keratosis pilaris (KP), which Khorana explains is "caused by a buildup of keratin that plugs hair follicles. It's harmless and isn't caused by poor hygiene." These bumps are typically rougher, flesh-coloured and less inflamed than acne.

With that said, true acne can develop on the buttocks too. "When true acne does occur on the buttocks, it develops in the same way as facial acne, with a combination of excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria clogging the pores," says Khorana. Although this is less common than on the face or back due to there being fewer oil glands in the area, it does happen.

The type of bumps you're experiencing can also offer clues. Folliculitis usually presents as red papules and pus-filled pustules around hair follicles, while true acne is more likely to include blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pimples. If you're noticing painful boils, recurring lumps, or tunnels beneath the skin, Khorana advises seeking medical advice, as this could indicate another condition, such as hidradenitis suppurativa. Ultimately, identifying the underlying cause is key, as the right treatment depends entirely on what's causing the bumps in the first place.

What Products Are Best for Butt Acne?

For inflamed folliculitis or true acne, Khorana recommends a body wash containing benzoyl peroxide. As she explains, "A body wash containing benzoyl peroxide can help reduce bacteria on the skin and is often useful for inflamed or pustular breakouts." I often recommend leaving it on the skin for a minute or two before rinsing to maximise its effectiveness, but it's worth remembering that benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels and clothing if not thoroughly rinsed off.

Another ingredient I regularly recommend is salicylic acid. Khorana explains, "Exfoliating ingredients such as salicylic acid help to keep follicles clear by dissolving oil and debris within the pore," while AHAs such as glycolic acid and lactic acid "gently exfoliate and give you smoother skin texture over time." If the bumps are actually keratosis pilaris rather than acne, she recommends urea-based body lotions, explaining that they're "helpful for softening rough, bumpy skin and reducing keratin build-up." I also encourage clients to choose fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturisers to support the skin barrier without clogging follicles. Above all, I couldn't agree more with Khorana's final piece of advice: "Ultimately, consistency matters more than intensity."

What Helps Butt Acne?

In my experience, the products you use are only one part of the picture. Lifestyle habits can have just as much influence on whether bum breakouts improve or keep coming back, particularly if the underlying cause is folliculitis rather than true acne.

According to Khorana, "Lifestyle habits play a big role in either triggering or helping to prevent 'bum acne,' which is most often related to folliculitis rather than true acne." She explains that "staying in sweaty workout clothes for too long, wearing tight or non-breathable fabrics, prolonged sitting (which increases heat and friction), and not showering soon after exercise" can all create "an environment of warmth, moisture, and friction that can irritate hair follicles and encourage breakouts." These are some of the most common triggers I discuss with clients, particularly those who exercise regularly or spend long periods sitting at a desk.

Fortunately, a few simple changes can make a noticeable difference. Khorana advises "showering immediately after sweating, wearing loose, breathable clothing, regularly changing out of damp clothes, and gently exfoliating a few times a week to prevent buildup of dead skin cells" to help minimise flare-ups. Ultimately, it's these small, consistent habits that make the biggest difference over time.

If you’re dealing with breakouts in areas that are difficult to treat (i.e., your bum), a mist format can be a game-changer—and this is one of the most effective I’ve tried. “An SPF stick can be a useful addition to a sun care routine, particularly for targeted application and topping up protection throughout the day. The main benefit is convenience: it is compact, easy to carry, and can be applied directly to areas such as the lips, nose, cheekbones, ears and around the eyes without needing to use your hands,” explains Consultant Dermatologist Dr Derrick Phillips.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm always on the hunt for mature-skin product suggestions due to how nourishing they are on my dry skin. I personally love how thick this nourishing cream is; however, if you have normal to oily skin, there’s also a non-rich cream iteration available that will give you all of the skincare benefits without the risk of clogging pores.

If you’re well-versed in the skincare world, it should come as no surprise that Caudalie is in this round-up twice. In fact, I’d been using the brand’s Vinoperfect range years before I decided to try the Premier Cru cream. Using viniferine, a plant derivative that’s over 60 times more effective than vitamin C, this lightweight gel formula effectively reduces dark spots without causing the irritation that vitamin C is known for amongst those with sensitive skin. I typically shy away from anything that claims to reduce hyperpigmentation, due to the fear of causing a breakout; however, rest assured, this formula remains gentle on eczema-prone skin despite the active ingredients included.

A face cream that also doubles as sun protection is a great way to streamline your skincare routine, and Bioderma’s Pigmentbio SPF50+ face cream is a brightening formula that will leave your skin looking glowy and healthy. The Formula

So, how does this magical stuff work? As the name suggests, the formula is infused with red and black tea extracts, alongside an active bio-cherry fruit essence. These extracts temporarily "tan" the skin, adding a bronzed finish whilst also smoothing the complexion. As mentioned, this product doesn't need time to develop. Instead, it comes with a handy guide colour so you know exactly what sort of finish you're getting. In my opinion, this takes all the stress out of using fake tan. The product currently comes in one universal shade, but would add more of a warm, sun-kissed effect to darker skin tones, rather than a very deep tan. I'd love to see a wider range of shades from the brand in the future.

The Application

There are lots of ways to apply By Terry Tea to Tan, but after rigorous testing, I believe I've found the best method for the most natural finish. When it comes to the face, I like to spray a small amount onto the back of my hand, then take a flat bronzing brush and buff the product into my skin. You can apply it all over or focus on the areas where the sun naturally hits, such as the tops of the cheeks, nose and forehead. If I'm tanning my décolletage, I tend to use a similar method. But if I'm doing larger areas of my body, such as my legs, I like to spray it directly onto the skin and use a large brush or my fingertips to blend it in.

The Results

After a week spent inside recovering from a nasty throat infection, it's safe to say that I wasn't looking my best. There might have been a heatwave in London, but my complexion would have anyone thinking it's the middle of winter. For my grand return to the office, I knew I could rely on By Terry's Tea to Tan to bring my skin back to life. I applied it everywhere I would my usual bronzer, and it left me looking suitably sunkissed. It took me about two minutes to take my skin from lacklustre to luminous, and I even skipped foundation thanks to how confident this product made me feel. How often do you use/recommend drugstore beauty products?

My phone is always on for my clients, even after hours. That being said, I am always receiving "skin-mergency" text messages, and while I can't be there for them physically, I can be there for them while they navigate aisles at a drugstore. I think I send my clients to drugstores well over 15 times a week.

As a facialist and dermatological nurse, you're an expert in aesthetics. What would you say to someone who thinks only expensive products are effective? In your experience, can drugstore beauty products make a real and visible difference in someone's skin quality?

When I was a student in nursing school, I sold high-end, luxury products in department stores. I used to think, "It does not get better than this. I mean, these products are so expensive. You even feel rich putting them on," but I was wrong! As I started to educate myself on ingredients, formulas, and, yes, even packaging, I started to realize one thing: Most of us let marketing decide for us. A $5 lip balm can absolutely be better than a $225 lip balm. It all comes down to the formula and not the brand or price.

There are also many influencers who make videos on product reviews. So take your time to review products before making a purchase.

Like any beauty editor, I'll never stop banging on about the importance of wearing SPF, and for good reason. It's the one skincare rule dermatologists agree is non-negotiable because the damage caused by UV rays is often invisible until months (or even years) later.

Whilst you might associate sun damage with holidays abroad, even years of basking in the British sunshine can leave their mark. From stubborn hyperpigmentation and fine lines to a loss of firmness, the effects of UV exposure have a habit of catching up with you.

The good news? There’s plenty you can do to prevent further damage and improve what’s already there. We asked a consultant dermatologist and founder of Self London, Dr Anjali Mahto, to reveal the six most common signs of sun damage, what they really mean for your skin and the best ways to treat them.

1. Hyperpigmentation & Sunspots 

If you've noticed little dark patches or sun spots appear on your face, hands and chest, Dr Mahto says this is the result of excess melanin production and appears in these areas as that's where cumulative exposure is highest.

She adds, "Prevention through daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential, but for existing spots, ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide and azelaic acid can fade them gradually." However, she caveats: "Stubborn, deeper pigmentation usually requires professional treatment like BBL, which targets melanin directly at the depth where it actually lives."

2. Dull, Rough Skin

Skin that's lost its glow faster than the sunshine disappears after a British heatwave? "UV damage breaks down collagen and elastin, causing the skin to lose its smooth, reflective quality and feel sandpapery," reveals Dr Mahto.

She recommends consistently using a retinoid and exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) as they can improve surface texture over weeks. "For more significant textural damage, laser resurfacing delivers faster, more meaningful results by stimulating collagen remodelling."

3. Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Fine lines are often one of the first signs that years of UV exposure are catching up with your skin. "Whilst they're a natural part of ageing, spending time in the sun without adequate protection can speed up the process, meaning wrinkles appear earlier and become more pronounced," explains Dr Mahto. "Collagen degradation creates visible creasing, particularly around the eyes and mouth where the skin is thinnest," she adds.

Yep, here comes the R word again. "Topical retinoids help prevent further damage and can produce modest improvement," advises Dr Mahto.

4. Redness & Broken Capillaries 

For anyone who deals with rosacea, this one will come as no surprise. "Sun exposure damages blood vessels, causing persistent flushing and visible broken capillaries," reveals Dr Mahto.

"Whilst facial sunscreen use and anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide can reduce redness, treatments like BBL selectively target these vessels and close them off, providing lasting improvement that skincare cannot achieve," she adds.

5. Loss of Firmness & Elasticity

UV-induced elastin degradation means the skin loses its ability to bounce back; what used to snap back now stays creased. Dr Mahto says, "This is difficult to address topically because elastin regeneration in adult skin is minimal. Treatments like HALO that trigger controlled injury and fibroblast stimulation can restore some elasticity by promoting collagen and elastin remodelling."

Topically, peptides are your best bet as they can act as chemical messengers that signal skin cells to build new elastin and collagen fibers. At the same time, other types block the enzymes that break down these essential support proteins.

6. "Thickened" Skin

If your skin is starting to look a little leathery, it might be time to pay attention. "Chronic sun exposure causes the skin to thicken unevenly and lose its natural luminosity, taking on a weathered appearance. This requires a multi-pronged approach: strict sunscreen going forward, retinoids for ongoing cellular turnover and potentially in-clinic treatments to remove damaged layers and stimulate renewal," advises Dr Mahto.

As a beauty editor, I'm a bit skeptical of these claims. After all, which string of proteins or peptide chain can stall the hands of time? But after noticing my first signs of aging (slight crow's-feet and etches below my eyes worsened by purple circles from an unstable sleep schedule, stress, and travel), I suddenly found myself paying these products a bit more attention.

The state of our skin is often one of the first indicators of age: Lines begin to streak across our complexions, under-eye volume slowly fades, and a dark haze settles below our orbs. While aging is inevitable, skincare can help slow the effects of time tremendously—especially when you factor in a clinically tested eye serum as potent as the one I've been using for the last 20 days.

You may recognize its name if you've walked along the walls of French department stores and premium beauty retailers, but its contents are entirely new. After picking up this product in the South of France and learning to implement it into my routine the French way (more on that later), my skin was undeniably transformed.

What is the Clarins Double Serum Eye?

To say that the Clarins Double Serum Eye is new would be a false statement. The brand added the concentrated serum to its top-selling Double Serum family in 2021. But much like how the French beauty brand occasionally releases new versions of its iconic Double Serum as its hungry team of researchers discovers new ingredients and advancements, the same happens with the Double Serum Eye. The modern result is this hot-from-the-lab formula that addresses several hallmarks of aging at the cellular level; targets every millimeter of the eye contour, from frown lines to bags; and includes an underappreciated Mediterranean skincare ingredient that makes all the difference.

Though collagen production drops earlier in life, a press release detailing Clarins's studies shows that 85% of human genetics are affected by lifestyle, not the mere passage of time. In short, it matters more what you are doing for your skin as you age rather than your age itself, which is why the team conducted an exclusive study on 60 monozygotic twins (siblings with the very same DNA) to analyze the differences. While one twin implemented Double Serum Eye into their routine, the other did not.

"With the same DNA, you should age the same, and this is how we wanted to demonstrate biological age," Issachar explains. In the end, the differences were stark: noticeable pores, slightly saggier skin, and deeper wrinkles on the twin who did not use the Double Serum Eye compared to the twin who did. How I Tested

Eye serums and creams have long created issues in my daily routine. Some don't absorb fast enough or at all, causing unsightly pilling when I blend my concealer. This featherlight formula, however, absorbs into the skin quickly, offering a quick hit of hydration under and around the eyes before melting into my barrier like butter.

As I mentioned above, an SPF that effectively protects me from the sun and treats my skin concerns at the same time will always get a yes from me. And Avène’s Anti-Pigmentation sunscreen does just that. Packed with azelaic acid to target acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation, as well as iron oxides, which help to ward off the high-energy visible light that causes dark spots, this formula has been praised for its ability to even out skin tones and reduce further hyperpigmentation. I have to admit, I haven’t used it long enough to see the full skincare benefits; however, its glowy and hydrating formula is enough for me to continue using it.

6. SVR Sun Secure Blur SPF50+ Perfecting Mousse-Primer

Finding an SPF to sit under your makeup without pilling can be a challenge, but luckily, SVR’s Perfecting Mousse-Primer is a hybrid formula that allows you to both protect and prime your skin. Not only is the mousse texture extremely fun to apply, but it sits beautifully under my foundation, meaning I don't have to worry about flaking or dry patches. I do have to note that it’s not fragrance-free, which might be an issue for some, but as someone with sensitive, eczema-prone skin, this did not cause me any issues.

7. Caudalie Invisible High Protection Stick SPF50

An SPF stick is one of my go-to ways to top up my sun protection when I’m on the go around the city. Enriched with nourishing grape seed oil and cocoa seed butter, Caudalie’s Invisible High Protection Stick is moisturising without feeling sticky or greasy. It has a clear consistency, almost like a lip balm and keeps my skin soft and moisturised while providing a smooth, invisible finish. When I have a full-coverage base on, it can disturb the products on my face slightly, so this product is best for no-makeup or light makeup days.

8. Nuxe Sun Oil Gold Shimmer SPF50

An SPF oil is my go-to sunscreen formula in summer, when I want something that doesn’t leave a white cast on my body, and Nuxe’s Sun Oil Gold Shimmer SPF 50 gives me this, plus a shimmery, high-shine finish that’s reminiscent of being on a sun-soaked getaway. It has the most gorgeous true gold finish, which blends in with my deeper skin, but this formula will work for medium and light skin tones as well. And if that doesn't convince you, then let it be known that it also smells incredible, with notes of sweet orange, tiaré flower and vanilla.

What Is an SPF?

Consultant dermatologist, Dr Mary Sommerlad says, “SPF stands for sun protection factor and is a marker of how much protection a sunscreen formula gives a person from the rays of sunlight that can burn the skin and contribute to skin cancer formation, known as ultraviolet B (UV-B). In the UK, SPF is usually given as a number, such as 30 or 50. This number indicates that, when sunscreen is applied correctly, your skin takes 30 or 50 times longer to burn than it would without protection. As the amount of UVB reaching the skin varies by time of day, it may be simpler to think of SPF 30 as blocking about 97% of UVB rays from affecting the skin, whilst SPF 50 blocks around 98%. This difference is important, especially if you have had skin cancer, work outdoors or have outdoor hobbies."

6 Beauty Tips for Surviving the Summer Heat

1. Avoid Heavy Creams

A big fan of Charlotte Tilbury Magic cream, it's something I have to press pause on during a heat wave. Dr Mahto tells me that's because 'heavy creams sit on the skin uncomfortably.' Instead she clarifies more often that not, 'a gentle cleanser and a non-greasy SPF are enough'. Good to know.

2. Protect Your Barrier

Many people assume their skincare products have stopped working during a heatwave, but the picture isn't quite accurate. "In reality, it's often the air conditioning drawing moisture out of the skin," reveals Dr Gizem Seymenoglu, a London-based medical aesthetic practitioner.

She adds, "As humidity drops, the skin loses water more easily, leaving it feeling tight and dry. Those who have sensitive skin are much more vulnerable to moisture loss in air-conditioned environments."

Whilst it's tempting to reach for more skincare products, supporting the skin barrier is key; with a simple routine, regular moisturising and staying hydrated are usually far more effective.

3. Skip Actives

Along with many of you, retinol and acids are part and parcel of my skincare routine, but Dr Mahto advises giving them a miss, especially if your skin is reacting to the heat. Instead, I've been reaching for niacinamide-based products, which help boost radiance, minimise the appearance of pores and strengthen the skin barrier. Bakuchiol is also a plant-based alternative to retinol that is well suited to sensitive skin and is proven to work in the same way, minus the irritation.

4. Always Reapply SPF

So many people apply SPF as part of their morning routine and then completely forget about it for the rest of the day, but sun protection isn't a one-and-done step. When the UV index is high, SPF is even more vital. "A mist makes reapplication incredibly easy, especially if you're wearing makeup," advises skincare expert Anel Lamaine, founder of Skin By Anel Lamine.

5. Keep Your Moisturiser in the Fridge

This easy hack is totally worth is as it feels so satisfying applying a cool gel moisturiser or sheet mask to my face. Dr Mahto also adds that it's worth "using a cool compress in the evening", and I'm a fan of keeping my cryo tools in the fridge, massaging them over my face and down my neck before I go to bed.

"One of the most impactful skincare habits in summer is the one most people skip: applying a barrier-supportive product immediately after cleansing or showering, before the skin has fully dried," says Dr Athalye. "That short window is when the skin is most receptive to repair." She adds, "Look for plant-based oils with a fatty acid profile compatible with the skin’s own lipid structure, such as coconut oil or manuka leaf oil. These support barrier repair whilst helping to address the bacterial environment on the skin’s surface that can interrupt healing."

My Review

It was pretty much a no-brainer that I would love these because I'm already a huge fan of Anua's other products. PDRN has done a lot for my barrier-damaged skin, so I know there's merit to this ingredient. These patches are perfect to use around my nose and smile lines because those are my most sensitive, damaged areas. It is really cool to watch these patches dissolve before your eyes. They just seep right into the skin and impart that "glass skin" effect within minutes.

Depending on where you use them, they really plump and hydrate the skin, leaving it smoother than ever with improved texture. I love that these are so easy to apply and that they provide target support for more damaged or sensitive areas. I love them so much, though, that I wish the formula came in a sheet mask for the entire face. I'll admit it's weird sometimes to have a megawatt glow only on certain areas of the face. Every year, without fail, my legs emerge from winter hibernation looking exactly as you'd expect after spending the majority of the year hiding beneath jeans, tights and thick socks. When I think of tinted leg serums, it's this one that springs to mind first as one of the OG formulas in this category. If you are as averse to fake tan as I am, then this is a great product to start with, as it feels almost like applying a body lotion. It's silky, lightweight, and there's plenty of blending time with it so you can really work it into the skin before it sets without rushing. I really wasn't expecting to like this product much, as it looked like a bit of a faff to apply and reminded me of a classic tanning product. However, not only is this incredibly easy to spritz on when you're in a rush, but the colour payoff is incredible. The spray means that you can cover large areas really quickly before buffing it straight in with a tanning mitt. And compared with some of the more subtle formulas, this delivered a really strong bronze colour to my legs immediately. I also liked that you have the option of shaking up the bottle for a glowy shine or leaving the formula still for a matte finish.
