A few months ago, I wrote an article questioning whether New Yorkers were the "new" French girls. In the story, I claimed that the huge interest in '90s minimalism spawned from Love Story, the hit TV show that depicted the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her husband John F Kennedy Jnr, had inspired an aesthetic amongst fashion insiders in the city that wasn’t too dissimilar from that which we often associate with French women.

Whether or not you agree that one might be replacing the other, there’s no denying the growing movement in fashion that has adopted these same codes of Carolyn’s ‘90s minimalism and French-girl style. Every New York influencer, stylist and editor I follow on Instagram claims the same seeming irreverence to trends and commitment to a timeless, neutral capsule wardrobe of pillbox hats, frog-clasp closures and silk scarf belts that ensure the appearance of effortless elegance at all times. The show began at the start of 2026, right after the peak of quiet luxury, and gave classic dressers a renewed passion for their pared-back sense of style.

Countless publications, Substack writers and online commentators documented the meteoric chokehold "CBK style" had on womenswear earlier this year. Every high-street edit and marketing email came with a subject line around getting the look, and understandably so! Bessette-Kennedy’s uniform of knee-length skirts, white shirts, Levi 501s, minimalist tailoring and dresses from Prada and Calvin Klein (she worked for the brand) was supremely elegant. Sarah Pidgeon, who played her in the show, added fuel to the fire by adopting CBK's low-key, highly effective '90s style off-screen, even dying her hair the same specific shade of blonde.

But as the show ended just in time for spring, the new highly anticipated spring/summer 2026 designer collections dropped. These collections had an occasional whiff of quiet luxury and minimalism here and there, but on the whole they painted a different picture. Texture at Bottega Veneta! Ruffles and tulle at Dior! And sequins, florals, feathers and much, much more at Chanel! Finally, maximalism was back on the menu. And it’s not that minimalists are immediately hanging up their all-black looks, but there has been a notable shift, one that made way for more experimental, eclectic and colourful wardrobes; a wardrobe that one might associate with another very well-dressed, highly referenced New Yorker born with the same initials: Carrie Bradshaw.

Worn by Sarah Jessica Parker but devised by costume designer Patricia Field, Carrie’s style needs no introduction. A longtime champion of Manolo Blahnik shoes and the person who made the Fendi Baguette the first-ever It bag, with each episode of Sex and the City, fans knew to expect the unexpected from her outfits. From the Galliano for Dior newspaper dress and the "naked" DKNY slip she's wearing on the side of the bus to the tulle skirt in the opening credits, she was an advocate for some of today’s most divisive comeback trends, including capri pants (even those in camo print), crop tops, bandanas, boob tubes and exposed bras (always with the exposed bra!). Carrie did it all, whilst almost always in heels and always looking—as she’d say—fabulous.

Today, we might be in the midst of summer 2026, but look around on the streets or in your office, and you could hardly tell. I’d estimate 90% of women dress similarly to one of these two iconic New York women of the '90s. The Carrie Bradshaws (CB) of today are those diving into mermaidcore colour palettes, likely having a "Pucci summer" and no doubt invested in one of the latest re-edition designer handbags like the Saint Laurent Mombasa, the Gucci Indy, the Fendi Baguette or the Chloé Paddington. The Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (CBK) gang, however, wear new styles from contemporary luxury brands like Toteme, Khaite and The Row. They’ll be in tailored skirt suits, tank tops with jeans and a thong wedge sandal, and maybe a pair of Celine sunglasses with a black headband for good measure.

Sure, there are some overlaps in their style; some of Carrie’s most-loved outfits were surprisingly low-key (the white bias-cut silk dress when she sees Big outside his engagement party at The Plaza), but those are few and far between. It’s deeper than just minimalist vs. maximalist, timeless vs. trending. Carolyn had a uniform, but if one tried to give the same to Carrie, she’d have it tailored into a miniskirt and put a Tory Burch brooch on it. Where Carrie was appealing because she tried (who else wears heels with athletic shorts for a dog walk?), Carolyn was appealing because she didn’t. Effortlessness was essential to her aloof sense of cool.

And before you tell me that New York style can’t be categorised just by these two women, that I’m forgetting many other well-dressed NYC celebrity inhabitants like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Chloë Sevigny and Zoë Kravitz, to name a few, I know, but they weren’t born with the same initials, so they don’t count here.

One of the most indelible cultural influences on those who call Manhattan home (myself included) will always be the television series, Sex and the City. Even apathetic New Yorkers can admit they’ve gotten caught up in the fantasy, or rather, the fashion, donned by the series protagonists. The sartorial choices of characters like Charlotte York will likely live rent-free in the minds of fashion people because they were so reflective of the culture at the time. Moreover, over time, multiple generations have turned to the series as a source of inspiration, whether driven by a desire to move to the Big Apple to pursue their dreams or simply to escape through the characters’ style choices. It’s likely that the influence of this show will never diminish, but even the most devout fans may occasionally yearn for more contemporary visuals. After all, there's only so many times you can rewatch the show before it can start to get, well, stale! Thankfully, there’s one place you can turn to for new inspiration: New Yorkers themselves.

Frankly, there’s no better place to look for sartorial inspiration than strolling through the streets of where they shot the majority of the series, ahem, the West Village. You can't walk a block amongst the bustling restaurants or historic brownstones in this neighborhood without spotting someone donning one of the season's biggest trends. Living in the West Village is sort of like living on the set of Sex and the City; you think you've spotted Samantha Jones in the wild, but it turns out to be a super-stylish stranger on their way to Bar Pisellino. Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to call this part of town home, much less prance around in search of popular winter trends; that's where my expertise comes in handy. With over six years of residing in the concrete jungle as an editor, I've got a knack for spotting runway trends in the wild. Ahead, I'm sharing 8 winter trends that have taken West Village. Even if you don't call New York City home, adopting any of these street-style trends will surely have you feeling like Carrie Bradshaw.

#1. Pony, Up!

No matter your zip code, there's always one thing you can count on to come back into style when it's cold outside: ample textures. The most recent example of this phenomenon is New Yorkers' giddy embrace of pony hair. The winter trend was first spotted in the F/W 24 collections of Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and Khaite. Since then, we've seen other fashion houses release highly coveted calf-hair outerwear, footwear, and even accessories. With runway collections showing so many different ways to adopt this trend, it was only a matter of time before it took over the West Village—spoiler, it's done just that this season. Pony hair has become the texture of choice among the style set, as it's not only practical enough to wear on cold days but also posh enough for a new jazz bar in the city.

#2. Oversized Aviators

It might be winter, but no wardrobe is complete without a pair of sunglasses. Every New Yorker can attest to the fact that the key to avoiding eye contact or any awkward encounter at the West Fourth train station is having a pair of oversized sunglasses in tow! Although recent runway collections offered ample trending silhouettes to choose from, it seems the only frame that's caught New Yorkers' eye is the oversized aviator. From Tom Ford to Loewe, recent collections revitalized this classic eyewear by incorporating '70s-inspired elements that felt reminiscent of Studio 54's heyday in Manhattan—think: curved edges, colorful lenses, and chunky frames. The contemporary spin on these sunglasses makes them the perfect accessory for one of those quintessential days in the city, when you start out somewhere in the village and somehow end up watching the sunrise the next morning.

#3. Unnecessary Gloves

If the notion of wearing sunglasses in the winter seems entirely superfluous, then allow me to introduce you to another popular styling trend: unnecessary gloves. Yes, you read that right. Despite dismal winter forecasts, fashion people have decided that the best way to wear gloves this winter isn't to wear them at all, but rather to use them as decoration. Although some of the origins of this styling trend can be traced back to the streets of Copenhagen and Paris, New Yorkers have a knack for making things, more specifically, trends their own. That's evidenced by the onslaught of social posts and street-style photos of locals adopting the styling trend by draping their gloves over belts or over the flap of a handbag. It's a reminder that the true litmus test for whether a trend is bound to make it everywhere lies in whether it can be spotted across the Empire State.

#4. Funnel-philos

Unlike the aforementioned styling trend, there are some pragmatic winter trends that have taken over the city—case in point: funnel-neck jackets. Long before every cool girl from the Upper West Side to the West Village was donning this outerwear, we saw it surface in the F/W 24 runway shows of Phoebe Philo, Bevza, Proenza Schouler, and Brandon Maxwell. Over the last few seasons, designers have subtly tweaked the outerwear trend through oversized silhouettes, unexpected colors, and thicker textiles like leather. The latter, paired with a high neckline, makes this piece the ideal item to pull out on a frigid winter day. It's no wonder, then, why so many New Yorkers have become certified funnel-philos, for there's no other outerwear that's as functional and fashionable for the season.

#5. Faux Fur Scarf

The descent into freezing temps in the city always brings back one controversial trend: fur. Love or hate it, there are few other textiles better suited to New York's climate, which is why it's remained a must-have staple for the city's most stylish residents. But don't be fooled; New Yorkers have found a way to make this contentious winter trend feel approachable by taking styling cues from runway collections. It's all about embracing faux-fur accessories, as evidenced by Miu Miu, Fendi, and Michael Kors' shows, which gave the fuzzy treatment to almost everything. For most New Yorkers, that's meant embracing fur scarves as a way to dress up everyday staples, such as tailored coats, baggy jeans, and even sweater dresses. Its wide embrace by residents this winter proves that the secret to looking stylish, or at the very least looking as if you live in the West Village, lies in taking a few sartorial risks—fur scarves are the perfect place to start.

#6. White Jeans

Fur accessories aren't the only hot-button winter trend that's taken over the West Village; white jeans have too. I know what you're thinking: "white denim in the middle of winter, really?" It might seem a little diabolical, especially considering that there are so many other denim trends that adhere to conventional styling "rules" around wearing this shade. But alas, you gotta give credit where credit is due! New Yorkers don't let what's arbitrary dictate their wardrobe choices, as evidenced by the surge of white denim outfit ideas on social media. From styling them with scarf-coats and sock boots to trench coats and timeless loafers, they've shown that this "controversial' denim trend is the key to achieving the downtown girl aesthetic as you trapeze about the city.

#7. Pillbox Caps

For those who find white denim too casual for their taste, there's a fancier winter trend that's all over the West Village right now: pillbox hats. First popularized in the '60s, the posh accessory made a comeback a few seasons ago in the runway collections of Chloé, Alaïa, Celine, and Altuzarra. It's remained an accessory of choice among creative directors, as luxury houses and indie labels have some of the most sought-after pillbox hats with slight updates each season—more recent examples include faux-fur finishes and fun colors. While one could argue that its continued presence in collections is what cemented the polished accessories' popularity, in truth, New Yorkers were among the earliest adopters of the trend. You can't walk into a trendy café, a cool gallery, or really any corner of the city without spotting someone donning a pillbox hat; it's one of the few trends that keeps residents' heads turning.

#8. Bowling Club

Hats off to those who have the wherewithal to buy every new handbag trend, but that's not a reality for most people paying rent in Manhattan. Being part of the club that calls this city home requires being strategic about what to invest in each season. Frankly, there's no other style better suited to the task than bowler bags. Ever since the bag was reintroduced in the runway collections of Miu Miu, Khaite, Jacquemus, and The Row, it's been on a strikeout. Unlike other trends, it has a winning advantage among West Village residents because its oversized shape makes it functional enough to be a commuter bag, yet chic enough to carry for a night out. It also doesn't hurt that there have been highly coveted adaptations of the style, including Coach's adeptly named "Empire Bag," which is so recognizable that you could nod to a stranger at a coffee shop who's carrying it too (speaking from experience). All that is to say, there are few accessories that are as indicative of having an Empire State of Mind, but this bag surely makes the cut.

As a beauty editor and admirer of all things Sex and the City, there's one thing I know to be true about the story's original show, three movies, and spin-off: SJP's Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes, and Samantha Jones all had aesthetics that were perfectly displayed through their style and surroundings. Its protagonist, Carrie, frequently began and concluded episodes in her Manhattan apartment with a looming question about her love life, a cigarette, and Diptyque candles sprinkled in the background. We also saw her circle of friends have their own lifestyle and beauty rituals here and there that helped paint a full picture of who these chic women were off-screen.

That said, there is one minor character that didn't have much screen time in SATC or And Just Like That... but lived rent-free in my mind (and, evidently, also in the mind of our favorite romance-driven and impulsive protagonist, Carrie Bradshaw): Natasha Naginsky. The character was portrayed by Bridget Moynahan and was a Manhattan socialite who was the epitome of quiet luxury. Not only was she poised and polished, but there was also something about her that was effortlessly chic. Like the rest of the women in the SATC universe, much of her beauty habits is up to the imagination of viewers, but I like to imagine that her taste in fragrances is as elegant as her wardrobe choices.

I would pin Natasha as someone who would be most attracted to modern takes on classic fragrance profiles, with the majority of them featuring bamboo. While it's frequently referred to as being part of the aromatic wood family due to its thick, woody stem and spear-shaped leaves, it's technically considered to be a grass. The note is commonly green, crisp, and grounding while also possessing light citrus of floral undertones, one of the best options to wear as you transition from season to season.

Below, I'm sharing every bamboo-infused and inspired scent I believe she would wear while dashing around the city without thinking much about the sex columnist's qualms with her.

When you think of Carrie Bradshaw's handbag collection, it's probably a Fendi Baguette that comes to mind first. I'm here to inform you that there's a new bag in Carrie's railroad closet, and every fashion person I know is already champing at the bit to get one of their own.

The bag in question—Coach's Glovetanned Leather Kisslock Frame Bag—debuted on the runway at the American leather-goods brand's S/S 25 show back in September during New York Fashion Week. Buzz was aplenty afterward as attendees kicked off their spring 2025 wish lists with their preferred size, color, and embellished or unmarked design.

When it came time for editors to see the collection up close and personal at a re-see at Coach's showroom just last week, the bag's popularity skyrocketed even more. We all got the chance to touch, hold, and take selfies with the brand's next It bag. I participated myself, snatching up the XL classic black version and posting photos of it on Instagram immediately. One comment read, "Look at that black bag…my god it is amazing!" Another said, "That Coach bag?!!!!"

No one will get the fashion crowd riled up quite like Carrie aka Sarah Jessica Parker, who was spotted this week on the set of the third season of And Just Like That… carrying none other than Coach's hot-ticket clutch purse.

Nearby what appears to be Central Park, Parker's character can be seen talking on the phone wearing a plaid button-down blouse, a navy-blue shawl, and a maxi-length A-line denim skirt. On the accessory front, she added a long strand of pearls, red stud earrings, and lace-up brown boots—and her burgundy Kisslock Frame Bag, which she carried tucked under her elbow.

I'll never forget the first time I saw an ad for Sex and the City. It was 1998, and I was 10. I'd grabbed a magazine on my dad's bed (child of divorce here), and on the back was the image of Sarah Jessica Parker naked (gasp!), save for a laptop covering her holy parts against a New York skyscraper backdrop. "Sex" (gasp, gasp!) is obviously in the title as well, which I'm sure is why this moment was so vividly burned into my little brain. And while initially I took note of Sex and the City for what SJP wasn't wearing, Carrie Bradshaw's looks have now become so iconic, 25 years after the show first premiered, I'm still fawning over them.

Nineties and early aughts style doesn't appear to be going anywhere. In fact, its appeal only seems to be getting stronger (cue capri pants' recent resurgence). In my humble opinion, the era owes its prevalence in the cultural zeitgeist in large part to SATC's impeccable stylist, Patricia Field, who over and over again outfitted Carrie in showstopping looks that have clearly stood the test of time. From slip dresses to pageboy caps, Carrie's style was always a bit unpredictable, which is probably why it's still exciting and enviable today.

Last week, we were all treated to the most anticipated television appearance of the year. Season two of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…, is finally here, which means one thing: new fashion looks!

Season one was full to the brim of the fashion-forward and unexpected combinations that we've come to expect from Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda. It was the most memorable scene from the series finale: Carrie Bradshaw coming to the Pont des Arts Bridge in Paris, a spot where she and Big had finally professed their love for each other, to scatter his ashes. 

And it was a poignant moment in more ways than one—because in saying goodbye to Big, we said hello to the old Carrie, who emerged from a chrysalis dressed to the nines in a dazzling neon-orange Valentino Couture ball gown, fuchsia gloves and Timmy Woods Eiffel Tower bag.

Here was the old Carrie we loved; the Carrie we hadn’t seen since Sex and the City; the Carrie who treats her shoes like children, who can put on an outrageously frou-frou dress because she damn well feels like it and wear it as nonchalantly as the rest of us wear jogging bottoms.

But we had to wait a whole series to meet her again.

Let’s face it. Sex and the City had a lot to live up to this time around. When it first hit our screens in 1998, the show was every woman’s must-watch—setting trends, sparking debate, breaking taboos and liberating women. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte ghosted men before ghosting was even a word. When it came to sex, nothing was off-limits. 

Above all, though, it was a fabulously escapist ode to fashion; a weekly runway of looks we could only dream of wearing. Forget sex—the fashion is still what it’s most remembered for, even 18 years after the final episode. 

So did the new show live up to expectations? To answer that, we need to remember that it comes hot on the heels of a global pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, Me Too and a climate emergency. The three women (sans Samantha, who is much missed) are now in their 50s, no longer fully paid up members of the shop-till-you-drop, no-strings-sex noughties. The characters needed to move on, and so did And Just Like That.

But in making it feel more real, in the great words of Ms. Bradshaw, I couldn’t help but wonder if it lost its way. 

I have two (very small and tenuous) things in common with Carrie. I am also a writer, and I’m in my 50s. Although I don't have an artfully curated vintage/designer wardrobe, I love fashion and have worked in magazines for much of my career.

There aren’t many programmes starring fashionable women of my age, so a reboot felt like progress. And I wanted to be challenged like Sex and the City used to. However, in its eagerness to be relevant, it felt like it was following the issues of the day rather than spearheading them—paying scant lip service to things like gender politics and menopause. 

And when it came to the fashion, there also seemed to be a lag.

Once, Carrie’s closet was the star attraction. Sure, some of it wasn't to everyone’s taste. The men’s ties, flat caps and crocheted baker-boy hats were a step too far for most, including me. But it set trends, and even though we all first poo-pooed a tutu, I still own several, albeit watered-down versions in my wardrobe.

At times in And Just Like That, Carrie’s wardrobe seemed to lose its mojo, leaving other characters to steal the limelight. Ultimate boss Lisa Todd Wexley (aka LTW) blew Carrie out of the water with her accessory game, sweeping into a scene with an exuberant swoosh of a giant beaded necklace. Her safari jacket (episode nine), courtesy of Jeremy Scott for Moschino, had the entire contents of a makeup bag strapped to it—bonkers, yes, but it made you hit the pause button. 

Sure, the fashion in And Just Like That had the hallmarks of classic Carrie—her trick of throwing on a mad, quirky accessory only she could pull off. And making even the edgiest, hardest-to-wear high fashion look easy.

Back too, were the familiar style staples that made Carrie so watchable: clashing prints, pretty vintage silk dresses and intricately embroidered dress coats. Old favourites were pulled from the archive, nodding to our more sustainable times and delighting fans: the "wedding” Manolos, the "Roger” belt and the white Chanel booties. 

But while there were glimmers of the old Carrie—special mentions to her vintage rainbow ’80s Norma Kamali madras blazer (episode four) and delicious bubblegum-pink Carolina Herrera dress (episode three)—there was nothing that made you sit up on your sofa and take notice.

Perhaps her fashion exuberance was dimmed for a reason. Props to the show’s stylists for not giving two hoots about age-appropriate dressing. As all women over 40 know, this is a ridiculous (and slightly insulting) notion. Could they have been nodding to the fact Carrie was a grieving widow? Perhaps so, but like the old Sex and the City, which never let a plot get in the way of a good outfit, I kept on wanting more. 

I read a piece recently where a writer said they would have liked to have seen Carrie in trainers. I disagree. Carrie is heels. 

And therein lies the rub: In the cries for realism, did the fashion escapism get lost? Carrie has always been fabulous, frivolous and, dare I say it, fictional. She is a bright fashion light, a tonic for the times we are living in. She doesn’t need her star dimming. 

Let’s hope this series was just a warm-up. With discussions reportedly in progress to greenlight a second series, it seems like we could be seeing more of Carrie and co. 

And if that big orange dress is a sign of what’s to come, I’m looking forward to it.

5 Standout Style Moments From the Series

1. Seema

Real estate agent Seema Patel brought the sex back. Her raunchy leopard-print Etro trouser suit in episode six and statement gold lamé brought the sex that seemed to be lacking following Samantha’s no-show. 

2. A Nod to the Opening Credits

There were glimmers of Old Carrie in episode four when she came out of her brownstone wearing a huge white tutu, a 2022 nod to Sex and the City’s opening credits. 

3. The Moschino Safari Suit

The safari suit! The boots! The shades! Everything LTW wore was over the top, but alighting from a white Cadillac for a charity event in episode nine, this Jeremy Scott for Moschino outfit topped them all. The look of the series.

4. THAT Tulle Dress

Most people can still cite their most memorable outfit. Mine was the impossibly romantic mille-feuille Atelier Versace gown Carrie wore in a Paris hotel room for the final season of SATC, dusted off again for And Just Like That in episode eight.

5. Rainbow Co-Ord

The vintage 80s Norma Kamali madras blazer and matching jumpsuit in episode four was a fashion rainbow that made your heart sing. SJP is known for being heavily involved in the styling of the show, and her confident use of colour is one of her trademarks.

Next up, our key trends for spring summer 2022. 

Carrie Bradshaw is now back on our screens, and just like that many of her wardrobe signatures are making a quick revival. Carrie will forever be associated with corsages, namesake necklaces and Manolos, but to me one of the most Bradshaw trends of all is the ballerina skirt. In the opening sequence of Sex and the City she wore a pink tank top with a white tutu, which stylist Patricia Field found for $5. In series six when Carrie moved to Paris with Aleksandr Petrovsky the ballerina skirt returned for her final scene where she gets slapped and then is reunited with Mr Big. To be precise it was a sage green knee-length tulle skirt.

Sarah Jessica Parker has said of the now iconic look: ‘I think I loved the tutu dress that I wore at the end of the Paris episode because it was an outfit that was about an image that Carrie had, which was, like so often happens to Carrie, what she wanted to project onto the scenario of wearing that dress, a pie in her face. That outfit got to tell so many stories, and it was such a romantic outfit and it was so delicate and it had so much grace to it, and it ran around Paris, and that was not how she had imagined that outfit.’ 

The tutu has made a return in the spin-off series And Just Like That, as Sarah Jessica Parker has been seen filming in an ankle-grazing white tulle skirt. It’s also making its way back into our wardrobes, as I’ve started noticing tulle ballerina skirts trickling into new-in sections. Raey, the label available on Matchesfashion, has made a beautiful knee-length recycled tulle skirt in the Carrie sage green, as well as black, red, yellow and many more shades. Arket has also created its own take in a beautiful mossy green. Raey styles the skirt in a distinctly modern way in its imagery, with an oversized jumper worn over the skirt, giving it a more relaxed and feel less costume.

Carrie Bradshaw is nothing if not a fashion devotee. After all, she is the character who once said she would sometimes buy Vogue instead of dinner because she felt it "fed her more." And while I would by no means advocate for that sort of behaviour, you do have to admire her passion for the cause.

From the original Sex and the City series to the movies and new season on the horizon, Bradshaw's wardrobe has long been a hotly debated topic of conversation. Between the eclectic styling, OTT accessories and sheer number of Manolo Blahniks, there's always been a lot to discuss.

However, while we could spend hours debating the best SATC looks of all time or dissecting in great detail the true meaning behind Bradshaw's latest outfits, today, we're here to recount her penchant for recycling from her own wardrobe.

Over the last few months, SATC fans have been offered glimpses into the filming of the new series, And Just Like That, and of course, all anyone can talk about is the fashion. 

It's been refreshing to see that in 2021, Bradshaw has delved into her own archives to rediscover key pieces she's worn before. Thus far, we've spotted several accessories on set that look quite familiar, including the black studded belt she wore several times in the original movie and the famed blue Manolos she wore to wed Big.

1. The Studded Belt

We were introduced to this studded belt by Streets Ahead in the very first scene of the first Sex and the City movie, and it's been a pretty regular fixture on Bradshaw's waist ever since. She wore the item several times throughout that initial film, and Sarah Jessica Parker has recently been spotted wearing the belt again on the set of And Just Like That paired alongside a fuchsia midi dress.

2. The Blue Manolo Blahniks

Anyone who has seen the first film will remember these iconic shoes. They are the heels Big used to propose with, after all, and Bradshaw subsequently wore the pair to marry him at City Hall. Of course, the memorable Manolos are back for 2021, as the shoes have been spotted on Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of And Just Like That.

3. The Flower Brooch

Keen-eyed SATC fans noticed this flower brooch looked somewhat familiar, and the women behind the Instagram account @everyoutfitonsatc managed to narrow it down. Bradshaw first wore this brooch in season three, episode two alongside her forever-favourite fur coat. For 2021, the accessory has been elevated somewhat, now appearing on the lapel of a very chic oversized white blazer.

Bradshaw clearly has a liking for floral accessories, as the character wore a similar lavender flower brooch in the original series alongside a white tank, pink trousers and Dior Saddle bag.

4. The Fur Coat

While we have yet to see this Carrie classic on the set of And Just Like That, it is worth a mention simply for the sheer number of times Bradshaw has worn it already. This coat was a staple in the early seasons of SATC and reappeared in the first movie (when Bradshaw left the house on New Year's Eve in a snowstorm, no less). I'd almost put money on the fact this coat will be back again at some point. Watch this space.

And just like that… we all fell totally and utterly in love with Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe, again. In the span of just a few days, the New York paparazzi has been busier than they have probably been throughout the entirety of the past year documenting the sidewalks that Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon have been strutting down while filming segments for the reboot of Sex and the City. While the jury is still out on whether Carrie has the technical know-how to launch a podcast (yes, that's her job now) or whether each episode will be totally stripped of sass and LOLs without Samantha or whether the new script is any good (a single page leaked, and the world went wild), what we do know is that the fashion is still igniting passion. 

For this new series entitled And Just Like That…, every OG fan has been wishing the same thing: Please don't let Carrie be any less adventurous or trendsetting or joyful with her outfit choices just because she's in her 50s. Fortunately, the looks thus far have not disappointed. Revered costume designer Patricia Field was the progenitor of Carrie's kooky aesthetic in the old days, and while she is too busy on Emily in Paris to be signed up for this gig, a dear friend and former colleague from the previous seasons, Molly Rogers, is the person responsible for this high-pressure wardrobing in 2021. We know our gut feelings about the ensembles, and our audience sure has shared their reactions on social media, but what do we think SJP and her stylist are really trying to say about Carrie 2.0? I reached out to behavioural psychologist Carolyn Mair, PhD—author of The Psychology of Fashion and founder of Psychology.Fashion—to drill down into the nitty-gritty of what each colour, cut, detail and accessory might be portraying, subliminally or overtly. Keep reading to find out.

1. THE BRIGHT DRESS (AND THAT BELT)

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Carolina Herrera dress; Streets Ahead belt; Judith Leiber bag

The psychologist's take: Mair says it's definitely "girly (obviously because of the colour) but also bold and modern," and it's true that there's nothing too saccharine sweet about this shade of mauve and the business-like shirt-dress style. "Because of its colour, it says, 'Look at me,' and because of its volume, it says, 'But keep your distance,'" she adds. So perhaps Carrie is more guarded and that little bit tougher going into her new era? The spiky belt and stiletto heels would echo this idea. And yes, that belt is the one from the first movie.

An editor's take: Vibrant shades of pink have been trending for some time, and it's only natural that Carrie's full-skirted tutu and bodysuit was reinvented for the reboot. There's a lot to translate directly from this look and into our current wardrobes.

2. THE GINGHAM CORSET SKIRT

The psychologist's take: "Flirty and fitted," says Mair. "It’s sexy and reminiscent of a corset, yet it's demure because of the length. Gingham is traditionally associated with children's clothes, so it looks youthful, energetic and fun. It says, 'I feel great' and 'This is going to be a great day.'" Time will only tell whether the plot correlates with the mood of this ensemble, but this particular gingham skirt has inspired many a comment on Instagram, with shoppers desperate to know how they can get hold of one.

An editor's take: Carrie has always leaned heavily into accessories, but it seems even more apparent in this series, with piece upon piece piled high. Could it be that the clothes themselves are more demure and the add-ons bring the kook? It's a fail-safe formula for many of us to follow when we feel more comfortable in classic clothing items.

3. THE MIX 'N' MATCH JUMPSUIT

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Dries Van Noten jacket; Claude Montana jumpsuit; Paco Rabanne bag; Saint Laurent sandals

The psychologist's take: "I love this! This shouts class and style," says Mair. "The jumpsuit alone draws attention but suggests a more reserved approach than some of the other looks. It says, 'You will need to get to know me first.'" So could this be worn for a new friend or lover? There are plenty of new cast members for Carrie to get acquainted with. "The jacket is a fun addition that brings animation to the neutral nature of the jumpsuit, and because it's fitted, it accentuates the flowing skirt part of the trousers. It 'softens' the look, making the wearer appear less aloof and more approachable. The hat, bags and shoes are all statement pieces that draw attention in a way that suggest business (two bags) and uncertainty (two bags)," she adds. Mair, like many of us, felt a bit stumped on the jaunty hat—is it just a piece too far?

An editor's take: There's a lot here to unpack, but essentially, tailored, smart jumpsuits are a brilliant choice for those days where a dress just doesn't feel radical enough. You can make like Carrie and do some experimental layering, but a key piece like this will stand up on its own, too.

4. THE PASTEL COAT

The credits for this look are currently unknown. We'll keep you posted!

The psychologist's take: "Classic, plain and loose, this is a very different look to all the others," explains Mair. "It's delicate (colour) and suggests vulnerability (silhouette). This look would be chosen purposefully to project the wearer's mood. It says, "I don't want company, but if you must, approach with care or stay away.'" Should we be expecting a major upset? Did Carrie lose a recording? Or Big? We need answers!

An editor's take: Many online commentary has centered around this look being supposedly "dowdy" or too subdued, but I actually think it's elegant and understated. Not every outfit has to be loud and wild, and perhaps, that's something Carrie has also come to the conclusion of in her 50s. I am rather enamoured by the white mules, and they feel a lot more like her previous wardrobe than the many other platform shoes pictured here.

5. THE PARTY LOOK

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Fendi bag; Saint Laurent shoes

The psychologist's take: "This one suggests openness, an attitude towards experimentation and welcoming new experiences. The bold colours, shiny fabrics and sequinned bag reflect light and draw attention. Each would grab attention on its own, but in combination, they have a wow effect that says, 'Notice me—I'm up for fun.' The neutral colour of the coat tempers this a little and perhaps suggests, 'But I might need a little warming up first.'" This appears to be the message throughout and perhaps rings true with the Carrie we already know: She's open and fun, but those traits are mostly reserved for the inner circle.

An editor's take: As the world of parties and socialising starts to open up, a fresh injection of outfit ideas is more than welcome. The way a jazzy dress has been calmed by a more demure outer layer is a good hack for chilly British evenings, and I adore the purple Fendi paillette baguette—who wouldn't?

Personally, I was never a fan of the storylines or characters (apart from Samantha, so boo). Don't @ me. Carrie's incessant whining and fairly terrible track record as a supposed best mate always put me off binging the program as many others did, and it's very likely I've missed a cult-favorite episode here and there. Being a teenager in a boring countryside village, I didn't feel any sort of resonance for their lifestyle, to begin with, but I was always very conscious of the impact it had on style and trends. At the time, the bold decisions made by costume designer Patricia Field rumbled far beyond the avenues and streets of their home city and encouraged women across the globe to be more adventurous with their wardrobes, just like Carrie. She made certain items iconic and synonymous with her quirky, never-predictable look—from exposed bra straps and tutus to a major Fendi Baguette moment. We don't have visibility yet on whether Patricia will be part of the crew when filming starts again later this spring (could it be time for a switch-up? I'd like Shiona Turini as an alternative option), but I have taken it upon myself to do some predictive work for whoever lands the gig.

I hope that her working-from-home wardrobe won't be as casual and uninspired as mine is, and I have high expectations of the new designers and brands she'll want to flaunt, support, and be pretty woke about. There's a great deal of young talent available in the States these days, so perhaps, the mega-brands of Europe won't figure as prominently. Although, it'd be hard for her to resist the eclecticism of Gucci. But most of all, I don't think the journalist should be approaching her style any differently for turning 50. Age-appropriateness needs to be removed from our minds once and for all, and perhaps, this SATC renaissance might be the catalyst for a shift in perceptions. 

Will Carrie succumb to trainers and sensible flat shoes? Could she ever own a—gasp—tracksuit? Fingers crossed she'll come back to our screens with a big dose of fashion escapism instead of anything too realistic because goodness knows we all need it. So below you'll find the outfits I'd really like to see Carrie wear for the modern age, based upon some of her best looks from seasons past.

1. The Tutu 2.0

I can't hear the plinky-plonky theme tune without instantly conjuring the pink bodysuit and tutu to mind. The flouncy, voluminous looks and cute colors followed Carrie right through her journey from the TV series to SATC movies, so I'm sure the idea will continue, especially considering this kind of look is particularly popular in 2021.

Am I one of those people who thinks Sarah Jessica Parker and Carrie Bradshaw are the same exact person? Yeah, I am. I'm sorry, but you can't tell me that Carrie wouldn't wear every single outfit SJP has been photographed in over the course of her life, but that's beside the point. Clearly, I think about the wardrobes of both of those incredible women on an abnormal basis, and while the fashion in Sex and the City was great and all, it's Sarah Jessica Parker's style in the '80s that I think about more than all the looks that aired on the show. 

Researching the best style moments of celebrities is a huge part of my job, so when I tell you that my jaw drops whenever I come across one of the striking looks below courtesy of Parker, I am not exaggerating in the slightest. She somehow managed to nail the whole oversized gaudy vibe of the '80s in a way that still feels relevant today. Trends from decades past always come back around, but that's not even what I'm referring to here. Whenever I feel like my arsenal of jean outfits needs a refresh, I come back to this look. Yes, it definitely reads very '80s, but that's what I love about it. Each individual piece has remained a classic over the years, but the combination of the boxy blazer, scrunchie, and thick white socks makes it feel like a fresh yet nostalgic look.

Once again, SJP slays an event wearing nothing but a standout bra and tailored separates. Oddly enough, this outfit combination is one we saw all over the S/S 21 runways—black bras layered underneath all-black suits. Was Parker lightyears ahead of her time? Always.

This outfit makes me so happy for more reasons than one. The combination of the pearls, the crisp white shirt, neutral pants, and that undone sock and boot situation feels like a match made in heaven. To me, this is the perfect outfit to throw on when you're tired of wearing your jeans or when you need a casual yet sophisticated (yet cool) look.

And then sometimes, Sarah Jessica Parker wore a look that was absolutely timeless. This sleek LBD can do no wrong and her simple styling choices made it that much more iconic.

I never forget a good dress—fictional or real life. One such frock that will forever be permanently imprinted on my brain is the naked dress Carrie Bradshaw wears for her first date with Big in Sex and the City (season one, episode six). For the uninitiated, Carrie wore the naked dress in a photo shoot to promote her column and then decided to wear it on the date. It was short, stopped above the knee and had straps, but you couldn’t tell, and it was a perfect match for her skin tone. Hence naked dress. 

Despite the fact that you would need real confidence to wear such a dress, I’ve found a similar version on the high street—from COS, no less. While the Scandi brand is known for doing pared-back dresses, sassy styles it isn’t. So it was a pleasant surprise to discover such a dress from the high-street store. Years ago when I moved to New York to pursue a job as a fashion editor, I often thought about Carrie Bradshaw and her path from newspaper columnist to fashion writer. I watched Sex and the City as much for the story line and the career aspiration as I did for the outfits, often reinterpreting them myself, whether it meant tracking down a vintage Dior Saddle Bag or a pair of strappy Manolos into my wardrobe.

While rewatching SATC at home during this time of social distancing, my perspective has shifted a bit. I now find myself identifying with Carrie as a writer working from a laptop in her living room, and it occurred to me how many great at-home outfits she wears throughout the series. She has a range of amazing cozy outfits crafted from closet basics like button-down shirts and leggings (which will further inspire how I’m wearing leggings at home) but also looks that feel a bit more dressed-up. She spent many a morning tapping away at her laptop; pontificating on the meaning of love, men, and Manolo Blahniks; mooching 'round her flat in boxer shorts; cradling a cup of coffee; and gazing blankly out the window. Yes, I have no doubt that Carrie Bradshaw would be well-versed in the art of working from home if she lived in modern-day Manhattan. We might've left her immortalised in 2004, but it doesn't take much to picture her in 2020, iPhone in hand, navigating the politics of online dating during lockdown, all the while updating her Instagram feed with arty mirror selfies and desperately tweeting Il Cantinori about its takeout service. (She hasn't used her oven in 25 years.) 

Of course, we all know that in reality, a freelance writer with a designer shoe habit could never afford to live on the Upper East Side, but this is magical TV land, and we'll take all the escapism we can get right now. So in the spirit of things, we couldn't help but wonder what CB would wear at home had the series run today.

We decided to fabricate four imaginary working-from-home looks that we would've loved to see Ms. Bradshaw in and included plenty of references to some of her most iconic getups but updated them for 2020. Classically, she would allow a glimpse of bra (NSFW is so 2019) and add a bit of bling via a chunky chain.

It may have been 20-plus years since we first caught a glimpse of Carrie Bradshaw's fashion in the first episode of Sex and the City, but her style is no less noteworthy. While I'm personally more partial to Sarah Jessica Parker's off-screen outfits, there's no doubt that her real life fashion choices can often seem inspired by her best-known role. Last night, attending the New York City Ballet 2019 Fall Fashion Gala, SJP wore an incredible hot pink gown (AKA the colour of 2019) with mismatched shoes. The whole look was the definition of fabulous and there's nothing I would want to change about it. The Zac Posen dress included huge, puffy sleeves and was draped in all the right places while still showing off SJP's incredible figure with a fitted bodice. The neckline was just slightly off the shoulder and her neat high bun meant this feature was beautifully highlighted. 

This is all before we get on to the controversial shoe trend she was wearing. SJP, always one to embrace a more interesting detail (not to mention it's a big microtrend for autumn), went all out and wore one pink and one gold heel. While you could definitely try this trend out yourself, there's no denying it would be quite an effort to ensure you got two pairs that worked (not to mention you'd have to buy the two pairs of shoes too). However, sometimes investing in a small detail can take your outfit from great to incredible. Carrie, I'm sure of it, would be proud. It'll hardly come as a surprise when I say that I love Sex and the City. As a woman who works in journalism and fashion, it's no shockers that I love a TV programme about a fashion writer who lives in New York. Like a Monty Python fan who obsessively recites the funniest lines from The Holy Grail, there are plenty of outfits of Carrie's that I still think about and will often reference.

All of this reflection on Carrie's wardrobe leads me to one conclusion: Sarah Jessica Parker's style is much better than her most famous character's. As I said, while there are plenty of Bradshaw looks I still love, in general, SJP's ensembles are far more superior. Call it age or just a love of good taste, but Sarah consistently nails it when it comes to her style.

I'm not afraid to admit I'm constantly rotating Sex and the City reruns for love and dating advice, lifelong friendship dynamics, and, of course, major Carrie style inspo. Regardless of the show’s inaccurate depictions of being a single writer living in New York (and buying endless designer shoes), I usually gain something from each episode. It’s one of those go-to Sunday binge-watch shows you never get sick of.

Thanks to the '90s and early 2000s trend resurgence, the Carrie Bradshaw look has made its way back into the fashion spotlight. When we think of Sex and the City style, Manolo Blahniks, tulle skirts, floral brooches, and Carrie's iconic gold nameplate necklace come to mind. Though after combing the show’s wardrobe archives, the one category that stands out as most relevant today is Carrie’s accessories. From slip-on heels to armpit shoulder bags and statement belts, these outfit accoutrements stole the show.

She constantly took risks, didn’t follow any fashion rules, and wore her always-fabulous, out-of-the-box outfits with the most confidence. Channel your inner Bradshaw and shop the accessories ahead that she would wear in 2019.

Tall Statement Boots

No one has more shoes than Carrie Bradshaw. The designer-obsessed sex columnist had a weakness for funky statement shoes like these python-printed knee-high boots. 

A Dior Shoulder Bag

Carrie had a sweet love affair with anything Christian Dior. No one knows how she was able to afford a casual thousand dollar splurge every other week living off of a freelance writer's salary, but we're willing to overlook that while appreciating her fabulous bags.

A Personalized Necklace

The gold nameplate necklace was Carrie's signature, literally. In today's day and age, we could see her wearing the charm name necklace to still make her mark but in a more modern way.

Sleek Aviators

Carrie was the queen of aviators. It was her go-to sunglasses silhouette while shopping in the city or adventuring out to the country with Aiden. These Loewe multitextured sunnies would be her everyday wear.

A Silky Scarf

Each season, Carrie was seen in some sort of silky scarf as a headband, hair bandana, belt, or even top. She was the OG girl in showing us how to wear this accessory several ways. 

Slip-On Heels

Whether she was running out for late-night takeout or having a night on the town with the girls, Carrie was constantly seen in a slip-on high heel. Today, we think she'd be a fan of our current favorite shoe brand, By Far.

A Jeweled Mini Bag

She loved to mix studs, jewels, and silks, and this Cult Gaia beaded top-handle bag would've fit right in to her closet of endless of designer accessories.

A Studded Belt

Carrie wore belts over dresses, pants, and even bare skin. She loved to accessorize her waist and would've been obsessed with B-Low The Belt's statement-making styles.

Carrie Bradshaw's style, like many peoples', became more experimental heading into warmer weather. The sun and heat can bring out the most confident and daring of looks, and her outfit output during New York's hot and sticky summers was about as wild as they get: Combining rather "extra" pieces (like feathered headbands and tartan miniskirts) alongside unexpected sporty items was a trademark CB patented many years before the street style set.

Wearing strappy heels with everything—even the weirdest or most casual of getups—was her norm. No accessory was an accessory too far, and odd color combinations (such as lime green and candy pink) were all too easy for her to pull off.

At the time of airing, the case of Sex and the City's closets were what we aspired to have but didn't necessarily feel confident enough to copy ad nauseam. However, it would appear now that the summer of 2019 is bringing out the inner Carrie in many a woman we admire. When Italian designer and It girl Gilda Ambrosio combined a fluoro pink tennis skirt with lace-up heels and a flannel lumberjack shirt, it set this train of thought into motion. However, as I looked a little deeper on the feeds of Instagram, I could see Bradshaw's kooky influence all over.

From pink tutus—like the one she so famously wore in the opening credits—to the kind of lingerie-as-daywear combinations only the leader of the pack could pull off, she is clearly the driving force behind many new outfits, whether this crowd realizes it or not. Keep scrolling to see what I mean.

Style Notes: The look that started a chain reaction: This tennis skirt, vintage tee, flannel shirt, and strappy pink heels combo is just the kind of mad thing Carrie would have whipped up on a whim.

Style Notes: We think Bradshaw would fully tackle today's cycling shorts trend in the exact same way with fancy tailoring and heels.

Style Notes: The pink tutu never really dies—here it's been reinterpreted again with a summer knit and high courts.

Style Notes: Everything about this screams "Carrie doing something manual" from the headscarf to the boilersuit. 

Style Notes: Carrie always loved a bit of headgear, so Hanna's mad hat with a bold dress and strappy heels is incredibly SATC. 

Style Notes: Okay, so we're not 100% convinced CB would buy into today's trainer trends, but this exposed-bra dress is very up her strata. 

Style Notes: Who else but Carrie (and now Emma Breschi) would be brave enough to wear undies and marabou mules out in public? 

Style Notes: From the corseted top to the unexpectedly chunky platforms, this hybrid of multiple styles speaks to CB's outlook on outfit building. 

Style Notes: The journalist was often keen on loose-fitting, wafty kinds of dresses, even though you may associate her more with form-fitting styles. This rainbow kaftan would certainly fit in. 

Style Notes: Every now and then, Bradshaw would really play into the idea of prim, and this print clash extravaganza is certainly the kind of bold way she'd do it. 

Style Notes: Oh, how she loved scarves—whether wrapped around her head or worn as a crop top, à la Maria here. 

Style Notes: An evening gown with sneakers? That's just the kind of insouciance Bradshaw loved. 

Style Notes: We're not sure Bradshaw would agree with us on Teva sandals either. However, we do know she'd approved of this vibrant print mix. 

Style Notes: When would a gingham romper and giant sunhat not spell out Carrie Bradshaw? 

Style Notes: Bradshaw loved dressing to a theme, so for a trip to Italy, it'd be no different, we imagine…

Style Notes: Carrie went through a phase of wearing flouncy tops and dresses, but we also think the length of these denim shorts (and the high heels) are indicative of her summer style too. 

Style Notes: No doubt about it, CB would be ahead of the curve when it comes to this years bubbling trend for Hawaiian "dad" shirts. 

Style Notes: If Bradshaw were to get married again and opt for something sassier, we'd like it to be this, please.
