Gomez, 33, recently took to an Ulta store in El Segundo, California, to celebrate the launch of Rare Beauty onto the mega retailer’s shelves, and Who What Wear caught up with the star to dish on all things beauty, award season, and what this new partnership means to her personally.

Gomez’s hair is cut into a sleek, jaw-grazing bob tucked cleanly behind her ear when she looks around the room at the matching fringe on each journalist present. “Wait, do I need to get bangs?” she jokes before settling into rounds of interviews, when she describes the “surreal” experience of seeing her own products in a store she’d grown up with. “My mom was a makeup artist for this tiny modeling agency in Dallas, Texas, so she would go to all of the stores,” she tells WWW.

According to an article on People, the brand’s arrival at Ulta marks a breakthrough moment for the retailer as its largest debut to date, with Rare Beauty’s best sellers, hero collections, and two Ulta-exclusive kits launching online and in 1500 brick-and-mortar stores on February 1. This is the first time Gomez has expanded her brand into another retailer—having launched Rare Beauty on its own site and in Sephora in 2020—making hers one of the few celebrity beauty brands to be sold at both retail giants, next to Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs, and more.

However, it wasn’t industry domination that the “Bluest Flame” singer set out to achieve when she built her beloved brand. Makeup has been a core aspect of the multi-hyphenate’s artistic expression ever since childhood, when she followed her makeup-artist mother around the glamorous aisles of local beauty stores—absorbing her her techniques and noting the brands she’d use on models at shoots.

“I remember MAC being a huge one,” she recalls. “That was the one that all the girls were into… I remember all the colors and being like, ‘Wow, this is crazy,’” she adds. (We point out that it seems like a colorful MAC Cosmetics single eye shadow is a teenage beauty lover’s rite of passage. “Mine was blue,” she agrees.) “I remember being little—like, curious—[and] playing with that, and then it became a part of my life,” she adds.

Though Gomez’s approach to beauty and fashion has evolved since her Texan department store days—we joke about her viral “got some blue going on” interview moment from a Teen Vogue party in 2007—her love of makeup has remained. “It's a ritual. It’s part of what I do,” she explains. “It's natural that I feel connected to my brand because it's very simple.”

Aside from Rare Beauty’s wildly successful debut at Ulta, Gomez’s schedule is stacked thanks to award season. The star recently stepped out at the 2026 Golden Globes in a custom Chanel gown and vintage-inspired bob, complete with a vampy red lip—à la Rare Beauty and her makeup artist Hung Vanngo’s eponymous makeup brand—and was recently nominated for a Grammy with her now husband, Benny Blanco. She calls this look her most “recent favorite” award show look because of its timelessness, which she channels at every award show as she carves her legacy.

“I love that feeling of Old Hollywood, and I love bringing that to the red carpet,” she indulges. “You take photos, and you want your kids and grandkids to see the pictures and think they're classic.” The star pauses for a moment before adding, “Well, trust me, they'll see some not-classic ones from my Converse days on the red carpet.”

As Gomez gears up for more eventful red carpet appearances over the next few weeks—she is up for an Actor Award for her work on season 5 of Only Murders in the Building—the star reveals her beauty (and emotional) essentials before any award show.

“The biggest one is our liquid contour,” she states. “Because I like to tan my body, I don’t like to tan my face, so I always keep my face out of the sun.” She calls the creamy formula, available in seven flexible shades, “so yummy” because it nixes her need for foundation. “I just put a little dot on each side,” she says, mimicking the placement on each cheekbone, “and then it warms up my face.”

While many people might use the word "edgy" to describe black nail polish, this is proof that the word "elegant" also applies. The key, per Bachik's Instagram, is to be "meticulous" with the manicure prep. This involves pushing back and/or clipping the cuticles and filing the nails into a pristine, uniform shape (Bachik and Gomez chose a long, square one). For example, in recent memory, she's sported an expensive-looking shade of "peach champagne" and a classic cherry-red color. In case you missed it: Rare Beauty debuted its first fine fragrance, Rare Eau de Parfum—a warm, vanilla scent with a hint of spice. My friend group certainly did not overlook the news, as I was greeted with dozens of texts when it finally arrived at Sephora on Thursday morning. "What does it smell like?" "How long does it last?" "Is it worth it???" My nearest and dearest know I'm extremely choosy when it comes to my fragrance collection—and even choosier when it comes to celebrity-led brands. I'm not afraid to deter them from investing in a product I personally find subpar! That said, Rare is one of the few A-lister launches that genuinely surprised me, so keep scrolling for my unfiltered scent review.

What Does Rare Eau de Parfum Smell Like?

A little bit of everything—allow me to explain. The scent is officially described as a gourmand thanks to its emphasis on caramel, pistachio, and vanilla, but I actually don't catch whiffs of those upon first spritz. (Though, they do ultimately provide the rich, sensual dry-down.) Zaps of ginger and pink pepper hit my nose first, both of which brighten the blend and add some intrigue. (I swear spicy notes like these have a special way of attracting compliments.) The scent then blooms into its sophisticated gourmand phase, saltier notes of pistachio and caramel poking through the brightness, before it evolves into a gorgeous whisper of sandalwood and skin musks.

Each "era," so to speak, truly brings something new to the table, which was intentional from the jump. "My days are never the same, so I wanted a fragrance that evolves for the moment. Something that could take me from a quiet morning at home to a big night out—and always feels just right," Selena Gomez herself shared in a press release. So, yes, technically Rare is filed under gourmand, but I'd argue you can't really put it into a box. Those who shy away from dessert-like scents will love its complexity; those who crave edible notes will find comfort in the sweet sillage.

What's more, you can gently coax the eau de parfum into an entirely different scent category by applying one of the brand's fragrance layering balms, a silky hydrator that intensifies and extends the life of your fragrance. (As a general rule, well-moisturized skin holds onto scent for longer!) My Honest Review

Since Rare is categorized as a gourmand, I definitely expected the blend to smell pretty syrupy—not a bad thing, by the way! I personally love a dessert-inspired blend (when done right, of course), but I was surprised to catch those spicier whiffs before registering any sort of sweetness. My immediate thought? Well, this is a surprise.

It definitely leans feminine, but I wouldn't say it's light. Those gourmand elements make their presence known later on, and the dry-down is actually quite heady. If you prefer delicate, understated fragrances, this probably isn't the one for you. That said, Rare left me smelling good all day long. I'm talking about "beast mode"–level quality. I spritzed it on my wrists as soon as I brought home my sample, was immediately told "You smell nice!" from my fiancé (score!), and proceeded to smell like expensive vanilla for the remainder of my workday. Even after I had showered before bed, I could still catch faint traces of Rare on my wrist—a major win for someone who frequently tops off her fragrance throughout the day.

My ultimate response to the group chat? "Rare is SO good!! Honestly wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did. It kinda reminds me of Viva La Juicy (caramel, vanilla, sandalwood) but spicier and less fruity. I haven't stopped wearing it." Out of all the decades, I'd argue that the '60s was one of—if not the most—iconic time for bob hairstyles. In my opinion, the '60s bob is the bob. During this era, legendary hairstylist Vidal Sassoon pioneered the 5-point haircut which led to short, geometric haircuts, such as bobs, becoming one of the defining hair trends of the decade. Think former first lady Jackie Kennedy, fashion designer Mary Quant and actress and singer Diana Ross, who all embraced modern bobs with a signature '60s silhouette during this era.

And lately, it seems one sort of '60s bob hair trend is having somewhat of a revival in 2025, with celebrities such as Selena Gomez and Zendaya embracing big, Jackie O-esque bouncy bobs on the red carpets.

"The '60s bob is a short, jaw-length bob that is chunky through the outline giving plenty of movement and bounce through the ends," says Cos Sakkas, three-times British Hairdresser of the Year and Toni & Guy global creative director.

'60s bobs have plenty of volume at the roots and a luxurious swing or bounce through the lengths. "It’s all in the detail—the '60s bob has that little bit of extra polish and sophistication," says Sakkas, who says this is a versatile hairstyle you can wear in various partings. "The '60s bob is effortless and cool. It’s a nod to the past but totally modern and it looks great if left to dry naturally or softer when blowdried," he says.

"The great thing about the bob is there is a shape to suit every face shape," says Sakkas. "The oval face shape is the luckiest as all bobs suit this face shape, especially the '60s bob," he says.

How To Style a '60s Bob

"As with any styling, try to keep touching it to a minimum to avoid it frizzing," says Sakkas. "Apply Label.M Anti-Frizz Smoothing Balm (£26) through the mid-lengths and ends and leave to dry naturally, or blow-dry with a big round brush (or a hot brush) for a more polished finish," he says.

"Alternatively, set it in hot rollers for that ultimate '60s bouncy finish," says Sakkas. "Once it’s set, keep your fingers away; if you must touch it, use the end of a comb to prevent it frizzing and flopping out of shape."

It's official: Selena Gomez has entered her engagement era—and how can you blame her, when love is in the air with fiancé Benny Blanco? There's a gorgeous new marquise diamond ring on her finger, which means it's perfectly acceptable to wear white on white on repeat, no matter the season.

It's official! Selena Gomez got engaged last night to producer and songwriter Benny Blanco, who the star has been dating since December 2023. "Forever begins now," the singer and actress captioned a series of Instagram photos capturing the special night. Ever since her Wizards of Waverly Place days, Selena Gomez has had serious personal style, so when it came time for her to get engaged, her engagement ring was always going to be unique and undetermined by the wedding realm's biggest trends. Now that she has gotten engaged—Gomez's partner, Benny Blanco, proposed last night—we know exactly how different and remarkable her real-life ring is.

According to The Clear Cut founder Olivia Landau, elongated marquise diamonds like Gomez's are one of the most surprising cuts that she's been seeing more and more recently. Not too long ago, this shape was considered untrendy, and many future fiancés wanted oval-shaped diamonds instead, Landau told Who What Wear assistant shopping editor Ana Escalante earlier this year. However, there's been a significant rise in demand for marquise cuts, and Gomez's big news is sure to encourage even more.

The couple made their first public appearance together in December 2023, though they've been working together professionally for years. Blanco produced two of Gomez’s tracks in 2015, "Same Old Love" and "Kill Em With Kindness," and "Trust Nobody" in 2016. They also collaborated in 2019 on "I Can't Get Enough" and in 2023 on "Single Soon." That last one couldn't be further from the truth.

Selena Gomez has stepped onto quite a few red carpets in recent weeks, so it's understandable that she'd want to wear an easy, comfortable outfit when she can. The fourth annual Academy Museum Gala is about to begin, but first, we get the chance to watch as some of Hollywood's chicest and most talented stars arrive and walk the red carpet in Los Angeles. Often referred to as the "West Coast Met Gala," tonight's gala has a reputation for being one of the best dressed red carpet events of the year, and that's saying a lot with the Oscars and Golden Globes as its biggest competition. But, punctuating the ever-changing world of celebrity shoe trends, I've spotted a particular shoe land in the wardrobes of several of my favourite celebrities this season.
