Before I was a beauty editor, I was a fresh college graduate with a fashion degree. Years before that, I was a style-obsessed teen who practiced editorial makeup on anyone who offered to sit in my chair and spent several study halls sketching would-be red carpet gowns for my favorite actresses. Safe to say, I felt at home browsing the glittering displays of beauty and fashion at the mall from a young age even though I was usually window-shopping. That sentiment has only grown stronger now that I've turned my interests into a profession.

My career enables my innate desire to shop online at all hours, which means my wish list is always stacked, regardless of whether I press "purchase" or not. My budget may not be large, and my taste often far outweighs it, but I've amassed a list of fashion and beauty products inspired by my favorite It girls (Dua Lipa, Zoë Kravitz, Hailey Bieber… I could go on) with a healthy mix of high and low price tags to feed my fantasies and my reality. In this roller coaster year of ups and downs, I've sat on the news of buying and renovating my first home. The process has been eye-opening, exciting, alarmingly adult, and an exercise in gratitude (and patience) every day.

It's also been a new, welcome creative outlet. I’ve loved picking out paint samples, tile, and sourcing furniture, and I’ve especially loved designing my closet from scratch. As someone who used to pray daily that her rotted-wood closet bar wouldn't buckle under pressure (and relied heavily on rolling racks), I still can’t believe I have a walk-in! After installation, I’d find myself wandering in and out of the empty room, a giddy smile plastered on my face. It felt fresh and full of hope. I didn’t want to sully the space with anything that no longer brought me joy.

A new home means new beginnings, and I wanted to honor that with a well-curated wardrobe. I am deeply sentimental, so this proved to be harder than I thought it would, but I did it. I now live in a color-coded reality of tightly edited pieces (I know—who am I?) and you know what? It feels good.

In the early days of the pandemic (what a time) when I was largely relegated to lazing around in my pj's, I got into the habit of dressing them up with fun jewelry. The look was for my eyes only, yet it never failed to lift my mood. 

Fast-forward three years, and a lot of those pj's were still in rotation, albeit worse for the wear. A new house felt ripe for channeling my inner bombshell energy every day. I tossed out anything in bad shape, replacing it with luxe-feeling loungewear that feels as sumptuous as it looks.

I was (fashionably) late to the jeans party. My first foray into pants was experimenting with my mom’s old stirrup leggings, but beyond that, dresses and skirts were strictly my jam. Anything with separate legs felt restrictive and as far as hemlines were concerned, the shorter the better. 

That all changed when I discovered vintage in high school. Turned on to the "joy of the hunt” by a friend, I became obsessed with the adrenaline rush of discovering one-of-a-kind pieces. My previous grievances against pants were quickly forgotten when I fell for a pair of perfectly worn-in Levi’s. This was holy grail denim: buttery soft, slightly androgynous, and in the most perfect sky blue wash. I was hooked, and my repertoire expanded quickly: frayed cutoffs in lieu of miniskirts, indigo bootcut jeans over slip dresses. My sweaters were set aside in favor of oversized, distressed denim jackets. I’d turned into a true blue-jean baby. 

Denim still factors heavily in my closet. I’m in jeans almost every day. Recently, I crossed over to the dark side. Black jeans create a totally different look, and I was keen to switch things up. Revamping my denim drawer made me feel like I was in high school again, chasing a high through different cuts and washes. The perfect travel day outfit. The high crew neck is cozy and less restrictive than a turtleneck while a wide-leg faded jean is instantly more interesting than leggings or skinny jeans. Sneakers and a cute claw clip will keep you zipping through TSA to pre-board. 

A foolproof everyday look. Layering a colorful cardi will brighten even the grayest day. Straight-leg rigid denim is a subtle homage to the '90s, and patent leather lug soled boots are functional while staying on-trend.

Your to-do list is longer than a CVS receipt, and you need your getup to look as sharper than you feel. Keep it simple with a blazer-and-tee combo, then add some interesting texture with an over-the-shoulder striped sweater.

Date night on the books? A lace-edged cami and sky-high strappy stilettos add sex appeal, while baggy cropped jeans anchor the look. Top it all off with a delicate gold chain to highlight that collarbone.

They say fairytales can leave a lasting impression on kids. For me, it was Cinderella. Here was this poor girl who hustled away. Her only friends the literal rodents in her house. She finally gets an invite to the hottest soirée in town, gets all dolled up, and then LOSES her incredible heels (borrowed, no less) after only one wear! The emotional hangover must've been real, and I was just as relieved as she must've been to get them back. (Side note: Does shoe sizing not exist in fairytales?) It proved to me that the right pair of shoes really can change your life. (And a glass shoe? How chic is that?)

Needless to say, I’ve been a shoe gal since. Any time we went away on a family vacation, my dad would grumble and say, "Do you really need that many shoes? We’re only gone for a week,” to which my mom and I would respond, "Exactly!” A lot could happen in a week. What if we got stuck without the right footwear? It felt silly, and we were nothing if not practical. 

That practically has evolved since. I still adore a vertiginous heel every now and then, but after a few hard-learned lessons (almost destroying my ankle on some Parisian cobblestone, for one), I’m looking for function alongside fun. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not totally above buying eye-candy shoes; it's just that they should feel as sweet on my soles—like the ones I’ve listed below.

Lean in a little closer. I have a secret to share: I've been rinsing and repeating the same pair of black Chloé ankle boots for seven years now, and I'm not planning on stopping anytime soon. They’re my emotional support boots. Facing a long day on set? The boots are packed. Need a little height boost but not feeling a heel? She’s strapping on the boots. Going on vacation? They’ll go with everything (save for a bikini). I've had them re-soled once or twice, but beyond that, they look and feel as good as new. They’ve practically paid for themselves at this point!

Given how much contact my shoes make with the streets of New York, I have a rule that I very rarely (perhaps only in the name of Prada) break: I never spend more than $150 on footwear. The only problem is that my tastes, especially when it comes to shoes, don't exactly align with my self-appointed budget. At least, they don't when I shop from anywhere other than Nordstrom.

I can never seem to find the right outfits at the right time. It's the most wonderful time of the year. New York Fashion Week is here, and the street style outfits have been top-notch. My saved feed is filled with brightly colored shoes (orange, to be exact), coats that make a statement, and outfits I plan to wear as soon as humanly possible. My fellow Who What Wear editors, Jasmine Fox-Suliaman and Yusra Siddiqui, are on the ground at NYFW and currently have two jobs: to report on the FW 2022 trends you're soon to know and love and to and look extremely stylish while doing so.

As they run from show to show, these editors are relying on their statement-making shoes from Schutz to get them where they need to be. I'm currently obsessed with their 'fits, and I think you will be, too. (Hint: Tall boots are involved.) These are the six trendy shoe styles to keep your eye on now.

If there's a shoe style I'm pretty much never going to get rid of, it's a pair of strappy sandals. I love how dramatic this pair is and how it adds a touch of edge to the look. Jasmine told me, "Come early spring, I'm so excited to start wearing sandals again. To make the shoes feel more apropos during the daytime, I paired them with a sweaterdress under a leather skirt and a small handbag."

A tall boot with an even taller heel? Okay, I'll take it. "There's nothing I love more in life than a knee-high boot, so I have to get a few more wears out of the style before the weather becomes too balmy," Jasmine mentioned. "I love the idea of pairing a tall boot with a miniskirt because it makes these two sultrier trends feel a bit more toned down. And adding a matching blazer and a fun bag adds a final element of polish to the look."

There's an art to picking the perfect boot for fashion week, and a slouchy option is always a good idea. It's stylish and classic but has a touch of trendiness. "Slouchy boots have been trending this season, and I have to say I was dubious about the trend until I got this suede pair from Schutz. They're too cute. I wanted to pair them with a bright-orange, open-back sweaterdress and a shearling shoulder bag to make them pop a little more. When you have such a great neutral boot, you can really go wild with your other picks, and it will always keep you grounded."

I told you that I have my eye on strappy orange shoes. I love how Yusra styled this pair with colorful printed pants. "When it comes to fashion week, I love experimenting with color," she told me. "Orange is trending hard for 2022, as evidenced on the spring runways. These heels are the perfect pop of color whether I wear them with more colors or with neutrals."

Sorry, fam. Combat boots aren't going anywhere, and the thicker the lug sole, the better. "When it comes to trotting around fashion week, I prioritize comfort for most of my days," Yusra mentioned. "I know these boots will get me anywhere I need to go. To make them feel chicer, I wore leather pants and a trendy quilted puffer."

This boot is so good, they had to make it twice. If you're not into a higher heel, opt for a lower one like this style. "I love leather knee-high boots because they can instantly elevate this look," she told me. "This pair has just the right amount of heel that I need. Without these boots, my jeans-and-coat look could be deemed more casual, but the boots take it to a whole new level."

When it comes to shoes, Footwear News is at the pulse of anything and everything that's happening in the industry. So when the publication names the Brand of the Year for its annual Achievement Awards, it's a big deal. This year, the honour goes to Schutz, the Brazilian brand loved by celebrities and style bloggers alike.

The brand, which keeps many of its heels and flats in the less-than-£160 range (boots run slightly higher), develops 4000 to 5000 styles per year, thanks to the fact that it owns its own factory, unlike many of its competitors. Alexandre Birman, who has been CEO of the company since 2011, explained, "We can offer more control with what we can do, and our speed to market is much faster."

Birman, who also has his own namesake high-end line, has made it his mission to increase the fast-fashion brand's presence and expand into the U.S. from its native Brazil, a move that has clearly paid off. Celebrity fans of Schutz include Bella Hadid, Kate Middleton, Alessandra Ambrosio, Taylor Swift, Hailey Baldwin and Jennifer Lawrence.

You can never have enough pairs. Most people have their signature shape, but to mix up your look, I think it's worth exploring all different types every season. There's usually something new out there to add to my collection. It's also fun to explore different colour frames, and to shop in both the men's and women's sections.

You simply need to have your favourite shoe of the season.

Handbags are a great way to freshen up your look. I usually carry something neutral during the day, and love to add a pop of colour to my handbag at night.

I usually go softer in the winter and a little bit bolder in the summer, when I have a bit more colour from the sun. Lipstick shades are, of course, very personal depending on skin tone, so a lipstick that looks great on you might not work for me. It's important to try different brands to find the perfect shade for you.

Scarves are a great accessory for all year-round in different weights and fabrications. It's one of those easy pick-up items from your travels. They also make great gifts!
