What could you infer about my wardrobe if I told you that I've played tennis for the last two-and-a-half decades and went to private school for six of those years? The answer: I've worn a heck of a lot of pleated skirts. You might think I'd renounce the style altogether after being forced to wear unfortunate plaid versions in junior high and high school, but sporty pleats and tennis courts go together like bread and butter, so I've continued to buy them into my 30s. This month, Who What Wear UK got to sit down with Scarlett Johannson. Best known as one of the world's most celebrated actors, Johannson has since founded The Outset, her skincare brand co-founded with Kate Foster. Born out of Johannson's experience of dealing with skin issues, The Outset is grounded in gentle formulas that nourish and restore—rather than strip—the skin's delicate barrier. Ahead, Johannson opens up about her skincare learnings, her beauty words of wisdom and her products she'll never be without.

1. What led you to starting The Outset?

"It's such a classic start-up answer, but I had a pain-point and then looked for a solution, and that's how the idea of this was born," says Johansson. "I struggled with acne since I was 12, and when I was younger the messaging around acne and problem skin and was 'wash it all away, wash the grime away'. It was all about using toner, a gritty scrub and drying creams—all of this detoxifying stuff. I would go through cycles of drying out acne and then having dry skin and breaking out, it was just this non-stop cycle," she says. "It wasn't until I was in my late twenties, and I think I was newly pregnant, that I was just over it. I was so terrified to put anything on my skin, just because I thought it was gonna give me cystic acne. I think I was at my wits' end and thought, you know what? My skin is so dry, I'm gonna see if I stop using these oil-free products and use gentle products made for sensitive skin, and use moisturiser, and see how it goes and be consistent about it. And within a week, my skin was healing itself. What I didn't know was that I was nurturing my skin barrier," she says.

"Obviously, that word was not part of the zeitgeist as it is now, and I didn't know that's what I was doing," she says, "but I could see the results and I thought that there's gotta be something to this. That's how it started. I started researching what was out there, what was in the products I was using, and what other people were experiencing. It's been a labour of love, labour being a keyword there; it's been challenging. But it's really rewarding because we see the results in our customers' skin, my own skin, and our skin in the office. You see it in our own customer return rate that people are having an amazing experience and getting what we are now calling ‘The Outset Effect’, where they're getting the compliments on their skin."

2. What do you think your biggest learnings have been about skin care over the years?

"It's been very eye-opening to go down this avenue of creating a clean skincare line. I never realised what was in all of the products I was using before. You know, you buy a $250 night cream and you don't expect it's gonna be full of petroleum and mineral oil. There is no such thing as like a ‘clean beauty standard’, right? It's this kind of nebulous term and the challenge for us was that we wanted to create a line where as many people can participate as possible, and once you see what's in everything you can't un-see it," says Johansson. "And so you go down this avenue of [thinking] 'what does that mean?' It means reducing and eliminating these harmful ingredients and creating something that's nut allergen-free and gluten-free and fragrance-free. But how do you make that effective too? The efficacy of the product is key. We are committed to that. So if we have an idea for something like an SPF, it will take us so many rounds to get there. But we have our own standards here and we are committed to them. So it's eye-opening, it's a challenge, but it's worthwhile."

3. You have spoken about your experience with acne throughout your teenage years and adult life. What advice would you give to others who are experiencing acne?

"I would say get rid of your 20 times magnifying mirror. I need [to take] my own advice because honestly, stressing about your skin is the worst thing you can do for it. All of the negativity that comes with overanalysing your skin quality and picking your skin in that kind of a mirror—it's like a vicious cycle. I think it's bad for your mental health, and it's bad for your skin. So stop looking in the mirror that much. That's what I would say," she says. "Then the consistency of the routine, that's an important thing. When I was having really terrible breakouts, you're just sort of going through all these different things, you know? You're trying different creams, you're trying diet elimination stuff, tonics... all of this stuff and it's just too much. Using all those actives at the same time, in my experience, makes the problem much worse, I think. You have to give [trying a new product] it like 10 days."

4. Are there any beauty rituals or treatments that you swear by before a big event?

"If I'm going out for an event, sometimes I will do a face mask that's redness-reducing and gives you that 'bounce-back' skin. We created our Purifying Blue Clay Mask (£46) that is perfect for that because it's redness-reducing and it doesn't dry like traditional clay masks do. It stays moist, so it's not all cracking off and then you have this red skin underneath, even though you feel like you're getting the purifying benefit. So sometimes I'll use the mask before an event. I try not to do anything too extreme though because you don't know what's the reaction is going be. I wouldn't do anything too out of the ordinary before I was going to a big event."

5. Sustainability is at the core of your brand. How did you go about bringing those sustainable values into your brand? 

"I'm sure you [beauty journalists], probably more than I, are so used to getting these influencer packages. And the packaging is so much," she says. "You know, even while we were developing [The Outset] this in the very beginning, I had gotten some influencer product package from a very popular cosmetics line. And it was like this whole thing set up with like boxes and unwrapping things like foils, and inside was the actual container... it was just crazy. I said to Kate [her co-founder], 'this is the opposite of what I want to do'. I want everything to feel like as stress-free as possible, including the packaging, so that you're not feeling this this burden of having more stuff and throwing things away constantly, which is why we introduced the refills and post-consumer recyclable packaging, and that really resonates with our customers as well. We also have included a partnership with 1% for the Planet. The philosophy behind organisations like that are very much a lot in line with what we're doing here."

6. What is the best piece of beauty advice that you ever received?

"The best piece of beauty advice I ever received was probably from my sister, who told me to leave my skin alone. She would say, ‘stop touching it, leave your skin alone.” And I was like, "Oh, yeah!”

7. What is your signature fragrance?

"I don't know if I have a signature fragrance. I have fragrances that I go back to, that I wear on rotation. I love the Terre d'Hermès Eau de Toilette (£94) and Narcisco Rodriguez (£76). I've worn it forever."

8. Do you prefer a strong lip or a strong eye?

"I like lipstick."

9. You're having your nails done, what's your go-to colour?

"A French manicure."

10. What's your favourite lipstick colour?

"My favourite lipstick colour is is a Charlotte Tilbury colour called Bond Girl [now renamed MI Kiss (£27)]. I love it. I wear it for a lot of movies, it’s a great colour."

11. Candles, reed diffusers or nothing at all?

"I like candles, actually. My favourite candles are when Diptyque comes out with all the Christmas scents. I love those.”

12. If you had to recommend a beauty product to everyone, what would it be?

"Our Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum (£46).

13. What's the beauty product that's always in your handbag?

"Right now, it's probably our Rescue Balm (£31) that we just came out with, which was made to be always in your handbag. It is used for everything. I made it as a lip balm but I was using it on my cuticles, I was using it on my hair, I was using it on my heels. I was using it for everything, and so we decided to make a giant one."

14. Which beauty product gives you the biggest mood boost?

"The biggest mood boost is probably red lipstick."

15. If you could steal someone else's makeup bag, whose would it be?

"I would say that's such a good question. I would probably steal Bobbi Brown’s."

16. You've got a spot—are you team pop it or are you team leave it alone?

"I should say leave it alone, but I can't help myself. I'm an extraction type of person!"

17. You only have one product to use for the rest of your life. What is it?

"Honestly, probably our serum [The Outset Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum (£46)]. I use it probably too many times a day so that I end up having to refill constantly. I'm crazy about it."

But when it comes to one that has as much efficacy in its products as much as it has star power, nobody is doing it like The Outset. The clean skincare brand co-founded by Scarlett Johansson and Kate Foster is innovative and approachable and uses gentle, skin-nourishing ingredients powered by plants. (The brand's cornerstone ingredient is the Hyaluroset Complex, a botanical alternative to hyaluronic acid that's made from cassia seeds.)

We caught up with Johansson and Foster to talk about their journey as founders over the past year, skin changes after 40, thoughts on Botox and fillers, and more. Keep scrolling!

It's been a little over a year since The Outset launched in March of 2022. What are some of the biggest things that you've learned since becoming a skincare founder?

Scarlett Johansson: It's been a great first year since launch. I've been the face of campaigns in the past, but now, I feel like I'm truly part of this beauty community, and the feedback and support we're getting—from our social followers to the beauty influencers all the way to the consumers—is so validating. We really feel like we're on to something here with our gentle skin movement. I'm learning how truly powerful this concept of "community" can be.

Kate Foster: The development process is arduous, especially when you have very defined, clean standards like we do. Around our launch, we were going to have a lip product that was very cool and very innovative, but we scrapped it days before. Scarlett is known for her lips, and there is a lot of equity there. But we wanted every single product to perform like a hero, where we can confidently stand by it and say, "We put our all into this." So we've been working on a new product, and I think this version is even better than the original one. It's just one of those things where you have to let the journey guide you, and you're going to end up in the right place. 

Also, SPF development is a beast, and that piece is really important for us. But in order to make a mineral SPF that's clean, that's going to work on all skin tones, that isn't going to pill underneath your makeup, and is fragrance-free and not smelling like garbage—we have very high standards, so it takes time. That's something that's in the works as well.

Scarlett, you're approaching 40, and Kate, you're in your 40s like me. Have you noticed your skin change in the past few years like I have? 

SJ: My skin has definitely changed over the years! As time has gone on, I realized that the more I tried to "correct" my skincare issues, the worse it made my skin, so my routine has really become all about consistency and using products that are gentle and super hydrating. I truly believe that hydration is key when it comes to good skin, and honestly, my skin has never felt better.

KF: When I started to have kids, I was feeling tired and older and did a lot of retinol creams and harsh actives, but my face was really red like a tomato. So I connected with Scarlett on that, and as we started to work on The Outset and began eliminating those harsh ingredients and focusing on nourishment, my skin has never been better. I think I probably didn't appreciate the power of moisture enough before and didn't realize that what I was doing was really unkind to my skin.

Scarlett, the last time you spoke with Who What Wear, you said that you never get facials. Has that changed? Or have you tried any other skincare treatments since?

SJ: I'm loving our new Purifying Blue Clay Mask as an at-home treatment that I do two to three times a week when my skin needs a detox. And while facials aren't a regular part of my skincare routine, I do think it's a great addition to your skincare routine. We just introduced our Clay Mask with a limited-edition facial at Heyday Skincare, so I'm planning a trip over there to do a little detox and get some skin tips!

KF: I fully appreciate Scarlett's opinion because, you know, people are poking at her face all day long. And for me, I'm just like, "Oh, rub my face. Put your hands on me." I really like facials, and I think there's just so much innovation that's happening with them, like microcurrent and a lot of lymphatic-drainage elements that help you to really see a difference. It’s just a nice ritual. I have large pores, so I don't love the extractions, but I can tolerate them for a few minutes. Heyday is right across the street from us here in New York, so I'm a frequent visitor.

Botox, fillers, and other similar aesthetic treatments are so much more popular and accepted today than they were years ago. What are your thoughts on them? 

SJ: I'm a big believer of doing whatever makes you feel happy and confident. Some of my friends that use aesthetic treatments like Botox feel like they look their best when they are wrinkle-free, and that makes them feel more confident. I have other friends who love their natural skin and embrace aging with all of its changes. I think everyone looks their best when we are judgment-free of one another. 

KF: I think the stigma behind it is rightfully diminishing. Our approach to skincare is that it doesn't need to be complicated, but it should be consistent. And our overall point of view is having this everyday foundation for your skincare: cleansing, prepping, moisturizing. … When you have this really healthy, hydrated base, then you can do whatever you want to do, like get your laser treatment or massage or use that really active retinol. Just having that foundation is important. Everybody should do what makes them feel happy and makes them feel good about themselves.

Who do you consider your ultimate beauty icons?

SJ: My mother has incredible skin, and she's always advocated for self-care for as long as I can remember. She has been using the same products for decades! She taught me the importance of clean skin, consistency of skincare routine, and hydration. 

KF: I'd say Prince. Prince was a gorgeous human. I like a lot of people who are so uniquely themselves. I think it's also because my approach [to beauty] is just so simple and so basic that I do appreciate people who are creative and clever.

That kind of goes with my next question: How has becoming a skincare founder affected your approach to makeup? 

SJ: I'm in the makeup chair a lot for work, so on the days I'm off, I try to keep it simple and easy. After my skincare routine with our Daily Essentials Regimen, it's a little concealer, mascara, lip gloss, and I'm out the door.

KF: I'm still very minimal. I think the thing I prize more than anything is convenience and being able to get out the door. I cleanse, prep, moisturize. I have maybe five products that I put on, like my tinted foundation, blush, mascara, a little bit of a swipe of the eyebrow pencil, and a lip, and I'm out the door. I love experimenting with products and seeing what other brands are doing, but at the end of the day, I'm still looking for a convenient, no-fuss, no-stress approach to beauty because that's what makes me feel empowered to take on the day.

What kind of beauty products do you use frequently—aside from The Outset, of course?

SJ: The Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation and Concealer Stick—I love the brand's clean formulas and the coverage this stick gives. Tower 28 Beauty's ShineOn Lip Jelly in Wild—this shade is amazing, and the texture is so great. It's not sticky at all. The Yves Durif Vented Hairbrush, this is a must for my hair. 

KF: I love the Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen Foundation, and I'll either use a Tower 28 blush, like BeachPlease, or Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick. Just a quick little swipe. The Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pencil is still my go-to for brows. And then mascara—I'm always on the hunt for the best mascara and have five different ones that I rotate, from the Benefit Cosmetics BadGal Bang! Volumizing Mascara to the old standby, L'Oréal Voluminous Mascara, and I've been messing around with the Pat McGrath one.

Is there a beauty product from your childhood or teen years that you still use to this day?

SJ: I have a bottle of Ananya perfume from The Body Shop that I still covet! I will keep it in my cabinet till the last drop evaporates! 

KF: I still stand by Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. I was also very big into the Maybelline Kissing Potions. Scarlett and I talked about them, and I was like, "How can we do this?" Maybe someday we will. We also talked about having a moment with three-step skincare like Clinique. Mine started with Proactiv—it was the first time I started incorporating moisture into my routine. I think to some extent we were inspired by it, like "How do we create the modern three-step [routine]?" The philosophy is good, but we wanted to make that second step be more about feeding skin rather than stripping away. That's really what set us down this path of the Daily Essentials Regimen, our cleanse, prep, moisturize. So it's still there in our philosophy. It's just evolved.

If you had to leave the house in five minutes, what are a few staple beauty products you’d apply or bring with you?

Oh my gosh… five minutes? Well, that’s often the case actually [laughs].

I feel like that’s probably the norm for you right now!

We have a great lip treatment that will be coming out, so now, I always have that in my bag. I would probably use a concealer, definitely. There’s a Givenchy click pen that I really like—it’s great for everywhere and provides a really nice corrective cover. And I would use mascara. Makeup artist Pat McGrath once told me that all of the luxury mascaras are made in the same facility as Max Factor, so if you use any Max Factor mascara, it’s the same as all of those super-expensive ones. So I use Max Factor mascaras now [laughs]. I was like, "What?!”

That’s so funny. I’ve heard similar things about a certain drugstore foundation basically being the same formula as a way more expensive iconic formula that shall go nameless [laughs].

Isn’t that crazy? But yeah, I feel like a lip treatment, concealer, and mascara is my quick out-the-door routine.

What about your skincare regimen? Can you walk me through your morning and evening regimen?

They are kind of the same! I wake up and wash my face every morning. I know some people don’t, but I do. I use our Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser ($32), and then I use our Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum ($46), the Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer ($44), lip treatment, and then I usually take A+D Ointment ($3) and put it all over my cuticles, in and around my nose—I’m so dry [laughs]—and that’s it! I floss at night. … It’s basically just lathering moisture all over my face.

I totally get it, and you’re in New York, right? 

Yes, and it’s so dry.

Okay, let’s talk about your skincare brand that just launched, The Outset. You have access to and are probably sent literally everything and anything under the sun, so I would love to know what inspired you to create your own brand.

I have been interested in skincare for a very long time. I had problem skin as a teenager and well into my 20s. I remember my makeup artist telling me, "And now, you’re going to get wrinkles, and then you’ll have acne and wrinkles at the same time!” [Laughs] So I think I’ve just always been hyper-aware of how that’s had an impact on my self-confidence, and I’ve always been curious about what other people are using for their skin and how I could improve my own skin. I would use every mask and peel and scrub and prescription cream that I could get my hands on, and it’s just tough, you know? I think anyone who has problem skin can relate to wanting it to go away with some miracle treatment. 

When you were dealing with that, what—if anything—made the biggest or most positive impact on your skin?

Actually, I always found that when I returned to the same basics—just cleansing, priming, and moisturizing my skin—it would be its best self. For so long, I was using all of these other products to just strip it away, and it took me a long time to understand that I was doing too much. So when I was looking to create this line, I was curious to know what other people were looking for. I knew I wanted something that felt refined—it’s a very crowded space right now—and often, I feel like you need a PhD to understand everything, how different products and ingredients interact and that kind of thing. I wanted to create a line that played well with others and wasn’t going to cause a crazy reaction with whatever other products people choose to use. Really, it’s a return to basics, and we did a lot of consumer research. It turned out that the majority of people—like over 90% of the consumers that we asked—were pretty happy with the quality of their skin and were more looking to preserve what they already have. … After that, I felt like we were on the right path. And that’s really what The Outset’s principles are all about—returning to the essentials and being liberated from these complicated skincare routines. Every day is really an opportunity to start fresh. 

Definitely, and it’s a refreshing stance within a market that often feels so prescriptive or black-and-white in terms of brand monogamy and super-intensive routines. What has been the most shocking thing about the industry since entering the beauty space as an entrepreneur versus a consumer?

I think it was pretty shocking once I started looking at and being able to really understand the benchmarks of the different products that I had been using. Pulling them all apart, I realized how much harmful stuff is in skincare. I mean, I just had no idea. Things can look really clean, and it can give you this false sense of comfort, like using a nice drugstore brand that’s touted to be noncomedogenic and dermatologist tested and approved. And the packaging can look very "American pharmacy,” so you’re like, "Oh yeah, this feels clean and safe,” and then you start to realize that’s not really the case. And it’s not just the cheaper brands. I mean, I had no idea that my really expensive day cream was full of all of these fillers and basically petroleum. It’s kind of shocking. Unless you went on an exhaustive quest as a consumer to research and find out what each and every ingredient in your product is, how would you ever really know? And then once you know that, it’s hard to unknow it. I wanted to make a line that felt transparent.

What were some of the biggest challenges once you honed in on the type of line you wanted to create?

Creating a clean skincare line that’s also effective is extremely challenging. You can create something that’s clean, sure, but it might not actually do anything for your skin. I realized I couldn’t really use "natural” products because I had a really bad reaction to that stuff too. It’s just this whole other world!

I completely relate. I have very sensitive, acne-prone skin, and I just can’t use most natural or organic products because they often have ingredients like essential oils or other actives that really aggravate my skin and actually make it worse.

Yes, definitely. It’s been a really long and challenging process. Like, we will finally approve a day-cream formula, and then months go by and you hear, "Oh, well, when we did further testing, it actually has a trace nut oil in it,” and you just want to scream [laughs]. So it’s tough! It’s been frustrating at times, but I can honestly say what we are putting out there I am 100% behind. Like you, I also have sensitive, acne-prone skin that easily reacts to things, and I feel really good about this line. 

Well, I’ve been testing some of the products, and I’ve only been impressed so far. No reactions! Okay, this is a fun one. Switching gears a little bit, is there anything about your routine that you think would surprise people? 

[Laughs] Well, firstly, talking to a beauty editor, you have far more access to all of the crazy things people might think I do, like facials and different types of treatments. I think what would be most surprising is the fact that I have never done any kind of crazy facial treatment. Because I have problem skin, I’m paranoid about trying things, anyone touching my face. I never get facials. I’ve never done any of that insane stuff like getting blood injected into your skin. So yeah, I think people would be surprised to know that I’ve probably only had about three facials in my entire life. 

That is surprising! I would never have guessed because I so often hear celebrities go on about the importance of getting a facial every month or, you know, whatever it is. It’s like you said, though! Sometimes, less really is more with that kind of thing.

Yeah, for me, it definitely is. 

Okay, last question! What’s your Unfiltered beauty philosophy in seven words or less?

I mean, it’s such an overused thing to say, but I think beauty comes from within—when I feel happy in my life and when I love myself, you know? I think that really shines through whatever else you have going on, and people notice that. For me, the sense of "beauty” really stems from self-love.

You might think Instagram sparked the golden age of manicures. But looking back, it turns out the early aughts walked so the 2010s could run. The new millennium started out with some late-’90s mall relics like frosted polish and French manicures but became more adventurous as time went on when Chanel’s gone-but-never-forgotten Black Satin polish hit the scene. And things just got more over-the-top from there.

But like so many other nostalgic fashion and beauty trends, we suddenly want to wear them all over again. In fact, the biggest nail trends of 2021 are remarkably similar to those that took over 2001. To prove it, we’re taking a walk down manicure memory lane with Brittney Boyce, celebrity nail artist and founder of Nails of LA, and including ways to re-create the looks right this second. Best of all, the polishes and products of this decade are much healthier for our nails and a little more, well, polished overall.

The French manicure was the go-to for celebs like Jennifer Lopez but then faded into obscurity. "For a long time, white tips were almost forbidden and seen as dated and tacky,” says Boyce. "But with almond or round shaped nails, it looks really updated and classic. It’s back to the original intent of the look, which is to accentuate the look of a natural nail for film, runways, and photos by elongating the look of your hands.”

This Y2K-era trend, seen here on Mya, gives us all the feels. "Frosted nail polish is very easy to do when you’re busy and don’t have time for extensive nail art. I love the jewel tones,” says Boyce, adding that the trend "looks better on short, natural nails.”

In the early aughts, long acrylics were a celebrity favorite, with everyone from Missy Elliott to Pink wearing the look. And although natural, short nails had their moment in the 2010s, longer nails have had a resurgence in the last five years or so. "I’ve never been a big fan of acrylic, as it’s harsh on the nail, but I am a big fan of gel extensions, which is the modern way of achieving length without damaging your nail,” says Boyce. "I think good nail extensions look super sick!"

The punk staple went mainstream after Chanel Black Satin became the It nail color, and everyone from Jessica Simpson to Lauren Conrad wore the shade. 

Kimora Lee Simmons’s flip phone may be totally 2000s, but her nail color will never be out of style. "I did a hot pink recently for Megan Fox for the iHeartRadio Awards, and it was really fun,” says Boyce.

If you spent algebra painting Wite-Out onto your nails, you found your next mani shade. "White nail polish looks really great in the summer,” says the nail pro. "I also like using the white base as a canvas for nail art.”

The nail-art bubble may have burst in the last decade, but it’s been around forever. Fergie showed off this entry-level take back in 2005. "I always love minimalistic graphic nail art. It’s like modern art meets nails,” says Boyce. "In 2021, I think a graphic nail looks great with color-blocking.”

Gwen Stefani’s vintage-inspired phase brought lots of red lipstick and nails. "I think classic red will never go out of style,” says Boyce.

From cell phones to sunglasses, "bedazzling everything was really big in the 2000s,” Boyce reminds us. The wearer of this crystal-embedded manicure? None other than Serena Williams, who is a certified nail technician(!).

"The reverse French with clear tips started coming into the scene in the early 2000s, and it’s one of my most requested looks nowadays,” says Boyce of looks like Christina Aguilera’s. "But now we amp up the clear tips more by using a thin metallic shade to show the separation.”

Lily-Rose Depp has officially given us our favourite dress of the Venice Film Festival so far thanks to the lilac Chanel princess-style gown she wore to the premiere of The King last night, in which she stars opposite Timothée Chalamet. But that's not the only showstopping Chanel outfit she's worn at the film festival. Earlier, she opted for a pink tweed minidress by the label. It's hardly a surprise that she's now firmly on our fashion radars—her mother is Chanel muse Vanessa Paradis, after all.

A-listers such as Scarlett Johansson, Meryl Streep and Sienna Miller have all been in attendance so far, with Sienna's Gucci dress being a particular favourite. Billie Piper also deserves a mention, as the actress has shown off great outfit after great outfit. One minute, she's wearing a sparkling Erdem frock, and the next, she's channelling La Dolce Vita in a black lace Saloni dress. And don't even get us started on Penélope Cruz in that white taffeta Ralph & Russo dress.

As usual, this festival isn't just reserved for actors—there are also international models gracing the red carpet, making it an even more glamorous affair. Case in point? If you're petite, you know all too well that shopping can be somewhat of a struggle. While some brands do cater for those under 5'4", petite women are still a largely underrepresented group within the retail realm. Trouser hems are ridiculously long—so much so that they often leave me looking like I'm setting off for my first day of clown college (while the waistline tends to slip down to my hips). It's frustrating, to say the least. Which is why I've turned to the A-list to help me with my petite plight.

So many short celebrities have excellent fashion sense (think Sienna Miller, Zoë Kravitz and the ever-stylish Olsen twins), so I've deciphered their go-to looks to create the ultimate petite capsule, the fruits of which you'll find below. The goal isn't to change the way you look; instead, it's about making your physique more in-proportion. Once you crack how to do that, you can wear anything you please. From the dress Sienna swears by to the shoes Ashley rarely leaves the house without, keep scrolling to see the few key pieces short celebrities rely on.

Style Notes: Be it in suit, trouser or dress form, vertical stripes are an essential part of any petite girl's wardrobe as the lines create the illusion of length, as evidenced by 5'2" Zoë Kravitz. Furthermore, ensure you keep the look tailored to enhance your shape.

Style Notes: Ashley Olsen's go-to shoes are undoubtedly flesh-coloured pumps, which she's worn on a multitude of occasions. Style Notes: You might not think it, but midi skirts are extremely flattering on petite frames. They sit neatly on the waist, helping to define it while skimming your legs to create a flattering silhouette. The flash of ankle on show then makes your legs look leaner. Indeed, we'd never guess Jenna Coleman was 5'2" in this getup.

Style Notes: Scarlett Johansson, at 5'3", knows that wide-leg trousers are a petite's best friend. They're classic, hang elegantly and make your legs look never-ending. Make like Scarlett and pair yours with a fuss-free tee and strappy sandals.

Style Notes: If you're constantly having to take long dresses to your tailor to be hemmed, it's high time you added a dip-hem style to your wardrobe. Sienna Miller, who is 5'4", wears them on repeat, as they give the same elegant air as maxi styles but require no alterations whatsoever. Also, much like midi skirts, the subtle flash of ankle helps break up your overall silhouette, making you look taller, too.

Style Notes: Just because you're petite doesn't necessarily mean your body is in proportion. If you're like Lucy Hale, who is 5'2" and has shorter legs in comparison to her torso, try balancing out your frame with a pair of high-waisted jeans.
