I'll never forget the first time I saw an ad for Sex and the City. It was 1998, and I was 10. I'd grabbed a magazine on my dad's bed (child of divorce here), and on the back was the image of Sarah Jessica Parker naked (gasp!), save for a laptop covering her holy parts against a New York skyscraper backdrop. "Sex" (gasp, gasp!) is obviously in the title as well, which I'm sure is why this moment was so vividly burned into my little brain. Season two of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…, is finally here, which means one thing: new fashion looks!

Season one was full to the brim of the fashion-forward and unexpected combinations that we've come to expect from Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda. Carrie's new BFF Lisa Todd Wexley may be a new character, but the looks created for her have already given us a sense of her truly spectacular style. Our first sneak peek of season two has already got the fashion set talking thanks to costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago's of-the-moment styling. If you were following red carpet fashion news this summer, you've definitely seen celebrity stylist and creative director, Erin Walsh's, work.

At the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, Anne Hathaway made headlines with her showstopping looks—and Walsh is to thank for those.

Walsh began working with Hathaway back in 2019 and has played a part in creating some of her most iconic outfits. From those *chef's kiss* Cannes looks to Hathaway's viral all-pink Valentino ensemble, Walsh had her hand in some of the most talked about looks this summer. 

Beyond styling some of Hollywood's leading men and women, like Lana Condor and Kerry Washington, Walsh founded SBJCT: Journal, an activism-oriented creative platform.

Walsh is also an editorial and brand strategist with clients like Neiman Marcus and Cole Haan. 

In the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Walsh shares how she went from landing a temp job at Vogue to striking out on her own as a stylist.

For some excerpts of their interview, scroll below.

Tell me about your background specifically. Did you always love fashion and style? Or was this something that you came to later in life?

I always loved fashion and style period. I didn't want to work in fashion, though. I wanted to be an actor. Growing up, I would always dream of outfits and what I was going to wear the next day.

Growing up, I had a very stylish grandmother. My mom was always so stylish. She was a lawyer. It was very much a ritual getting dressed in the morning. Especially for corporate vacations or watching my parents get dressed and go out for things.

I was always fascinated by that. Even later, when I was involved in theater, I was fascinated by the ritual of becoming someone and how clothes let you do that.

I always wanted to be a storyteller. It ended up that I did that through clothes.

What was it like working at Vogue?

I worked for Phyllis Posnick, who was the executive fashion editor. At that time, it was obviously Anna [Wintour], Phyllis and Grace [Coddington] and Tonne [Goodman] were like the three main fashion editors.

Phyllis was much more the editor who had this relationship with certain photographers like Irving Penn or Helmut Newton. She was the one who was working with Irving Penn twice a month and he only would work with her at the end of this time.

We were in his studio like twice a month. Her shoots were usually with a celebrity or more beauty centric. Her job was creating a really specific, beautiful, lasting image.

What did you do next? How did that transition into styling?

I didn't know what I was going to do. I started looking at openings in PR. I remember one PR person I met with—she didn't hire me—and she was like, "Erin we just think you'd make a much better editor."

I started hearing about freelance assisting opportunities with stylists. So that was what I started doing next and I started assisting a variety of super awesome stylists, one of whom ended up being Samira Nasr who know runs Bazaar. 

Can you talk to me a little bit about how you started working with Anne Hathaway? Since you've worked together for years, how has your process and her style evolved, the longer that you are together?

We started working together when she was pregnant with her second child.

I think certain people resonate stronger in certain times. To me if I had to explain it with her—obviously all this fashion is rocking it and she looks amazing—I think that people resonate when they are truly embodying that best version of themselves. I think right now, she is just there and so people love it.

I love it. It's so joyful and inspiring to see. I think with her, she happens to be wearing this range of designers and these beautiful clothes. But what you're seeing is luminescence. That's what's exciting and that's literally the definition of a star.

Carrie Bradshaw is nothing if not a fashion devotee. After all, she is the character who once said she would sometimes buy Vogue instead of dinner because she felt it "fed her more." And while I would by no means advocate for that sort of behaviour, you do have to admire her passion for the cause.

From the original Sex and the City series to the movies and new season on the horizon, Bradshaw's wardrobe has long been a hotly debated topic of conversation. Between the eclectic styling, OTT accessories and sheer number of Manolo Blahniks, there's always been a lot to discuss.

However, while we could spend hours debating the best SATC looks of all time or dissecting in great detail the true meaning behind Bradshaw's latest outfits, today, we're here to recount her penchant for recycling from her own wardrobe.

Over the last few months, SATC fans have been offered glimpses into the filming of the new series, And Just Like That, and of course, all anyone can talk about is the fashion. 

It's been refreshing to see that in 2021, Bradshaw has delved into her own archives to rediscover key pieces she's worn before. Thus far, we've spotted several accessories on set that look quite familiar, including the black studded belt she wore several times in the original movie and the famed blue Manolos she wore to wed Big.

1. The Studded Belt

We were introduced to this studded belt by Streets Ahead in the very first scene of the first Sex and the City movie, and it's been a pretty regular fixture on Bradshaw's waist ever since. She wore the item several times throughout that initial film, and Sarah Jessica Parker has recently been spotted wearing the belt again on the set of And Just Like That paired alongside a fuchsia midi dress.

2. The Blue Manolo Blahniks

Anyone who has seen the first film will remember these iconic shoes. They are the heels Big used to propose with, after all, and Bradshaw subsequently wore the pair to marry him at City Hall. Of course, the memorable Manolos are back for 2021, as the shoes have been spotted on Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of And Just Like That.

3. The Flower Brooch

Keen-eyed SATC fans noticed this flower brooch looked somewhat familiar, and the women behind the Instagram account @everyoutfitonsatc managed to narrow it down. Bradshaw first wore this brooch in season three, episode two alongside her forever-favourite fur coat. For 2021, the accessory has been elevated somewhat, now appearing on the lapel of a very chic oversized white blazer.

Bradshaw clearly has a liking for floral accessories, as the character wore a similar lavender flower brooch in the original series alongside a white tank, pink trousers and Dior Saddle bag.

4. The Fur Coat

While we have yet to see this Carrie classic on the set of And Just Like That, it is worth a mention simply for the sheer number of times Bradshaw has worn it already. This coat was a staple in the early seasons of SATC and reappeared in the first movie (when Bradshaw left the house on New Year's Eve in a snowstorm, no less). I'd almost put money on the fact this coat will be back again at some point. Watch this space.

And just like that… we all fell totally and utterly in love with Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe, again. In the span of just a few days, the New York paparazzi has been busier than they have probably been throughout the entirety of the past year documenting the sidewalks that Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon have been strutting down while filming segments for the reboot of Sex and the City. While the jury is still out on whether Carrie has the technical know-how to launch a podcast (yes, that's her job now) or whether each episode will be totally stripped of sass and LOLs without Samantha or whether the new script is any good (a single page leaked, and the world went wild), what we do know is that the fashion is still igniting passion. 

For this new series entitled And Just Like That…, every OG fan has been wishing the same thing: Please don't let Carrie be any less adventurous or trendsetting or joyful with her outfit choices just because she's in her 50s. Fortunately, the looks thus far have not disappointed. Revered costume designer Patricia Field was the progenitor of Carrie's kooky aesthetic in the old days, and while she is too busy on Emily in Paris to be signed up for this gig, a dear friend and former colleague from the previous seasons, Molly Rogers, is the person responsible for this high-pressure wardrobing in 2021. We know our gut feelings about the ensembles, and our audience sure has shared their reactions on social media, but what do we think SJP and her stylist are really trying to say about Carrie 2.0? I reached out to behavioural psychologist Carolyn Mair, PhD—author of The Psychology of Fashion and founder of Psychology.Fashion—to drill down into the nitty-gritty of what each colour, cut, detail and accessory might be portraying, subliminally or overtly. 1. THE BRIGHT DRESS (AND THAT BELT)

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Carolina Herrera dress; Streets Ahead belt; Judith Leiber bag

The psychologist's take: Mair says it's definitely "girly (obviously because of the colour) but also bold and modern," and it's true that there's nothing too saccharine sweet about this shade of mauve and the business-like shirt-dress style. "Because of its colour, it says, 'Look at me,' and because of its volume, it says, 'But keep your distance,'" she adds. So perhaps Carrie is more guarded and that little bit tougher going into her new era? The spiky belt and stiletto heels would echo this idea. And yes, that belt is the one from the first movie.

An editor's take: Vibrant shades of pink have been trending for some time, and it's only natural that Carrie's full-skirted tutu and bodysuit was reinvented for the reboot. There's a lot to translate directly from this look and into our current wardrobes.

2. THE GINGHAM CORSET SKIRT

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Norma Kamali skirt; Celine shoes; Monrowe NYC hat

The psychologist's take: "Flirty and fitted," says Mair. "It’s sexy and reminiscent of a corset, yet it's demure because of the length. Gingham is traditionally associated with children's clothes, so it looks youthful, energetic and fun. It says, 'I feel great' and 'This is going to be a great day.'" Time will only tell whether the plot correlates with the mood of this ensemble, but this particular gingham skirt has inspired many a comment on Instagram, with shoppers desperate to know how they can get hold of one.

An editor's take: Carrie has always leaned heavily into accessories, but it seems even more apparent in this series, with piece upon piece piled high. Could it be that the clothes themselves are more demure and the add-ons bring the kook? It's a fail-safe formula for many of us to follow when we feel more comfortable in classic clothing items.

3. THE MIX 'N' MATCH JUMPSUIT

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Dries Van Noten jacket; Claude Montana jumpsuit; Paco Rabanne bag; Saint Laurent sandals

The psychologist's take: "I love this! This shouts class and style," says Mair. "The jumpsuit alone draws attention but suggests a more reserved approach than some of the other looks. It says, 'You will need to get to know me first.'" So could this be worn for a new friend or lover? There are plenty of new cast members for Carrie to get acquainted with. "The jacket is a fun addition that brings animation to the neutral nature of the jumpsuit, and because it's fitted, it accentuates the flowing skirt part of the trousers. It 'softens' the look, making the wearer appear less aloof and more approachable. The hat, bags and shoes are all statement pieces that draw attention in a way that suggest business (two bags) and uncertainty (two bags)," she adds. Mair, like many of us, felt a bit stumped on the jaunty hat—is it just a piece too far?

An editor's take: There's a lot here to unpack, but essentially, tailored, smart jumpsuits are a brilliant choice for those days where a dress just doesn't feel radical enough. You can make like Carrie and do some experimental layering, but a key piece like this will stand up on its own, too.

4. THE PASTEL COAT

The credits for this look are currently unknown. We'll keep you posted!

The psychologist's take: "Classic, plain and loose, this is a very different look to all the others," explains Mair. "It's delicate (colour) and suggests vulnerability (silhouette). This look would be chosen purposefully to project the wearer's mood. It says, "I don't want company, but if you must, approach with care or stay away.'" Should we be expecting a major upset? Did Carrie lose a recording? Or Big? We need answers!

An editor's take: Many online commentary has centered around this look being supposedly "dowdy" or too subdued, but I actually think it's elegant and understated. Not every outfit has to be loud and wild, and perhaps, that's something Carrie has also come to the conclusion of in her 50s. I am rather enamoured by the white mules, and they feel a lot more like her previous wardrobe than the many other platform shoes pictured here.

5. THE PARTY LOOK

On Sarah Jessica Parker: Fendi bag; Saint Laurent shoes

The psychologist's take: "This one suggests openness, an attitude towards experimentation and welcoming new experiences. The bold colours, shiny fabrics and sequinned bag reflect light and draw attention. Each would grab attention on its own, but in combination, they have a wow effect that says, 'Notice me—I'm up for fun.' The neutral colour of the coat tempers this a little and perhaps suggests, 'But I might need a little warming up first.'" This appears to be the message throughout and perhaps rings true with the Carrie we already know: She's open and fun, but those traits are mostly reserved for the inner circle.

An editor's take: As the world of parties and socialising starts to open up, a fresh injection of outfit ideas is more than welcome. The way a jazzy dress has been calmed by a more demure outer layer is a good hack for chilly British evenings, and I adore the purple Fendi paillette baguette—who wouldn't?

It was back in July 2021 that the reboot of everyone's favourite fashion-centric show, Sex and the City, officially began filming in New York City before And Just Like That launched in December the very same year, and it's safe to say that the series got the whole Who What Wear team talking. There was plenty of newness on the cards in season one, but thankfully one thing remained the same: the fashion. That's right, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte were back in action and wearing some very on-brand outfits for each of their characters. Season one didn’t disappoint when it came to standout fashion moments, with highlights including a sequin Fendi bag, feather headpiece and, of course, plenty of enviable shoes. And it looks like we can expect just as much sartorial joy from season two. Thanks to paparazzi images, we have the very first look at what the ladies are wearing in the second season of the show. Naturally, Carrie is leading the way on the accessories front thanks to a J.W. Anderson pigeon clutch bag, which she’s paired with a utility-esque boilersuit, sky-high Dior sandals and tights. Meanwhile, Charlotte is looking every bit the Upper East Sider in a sheer polka-dot blouse complete with bright pink bow, a black pencil skirt and sleek pumps. 

These first look images are a clear indication that costume designer Molly Rogers, who worked with former lead Patricia Field on the previous series, is continuing to evolve the character’s style (who didn’t love the bohemian lift to Carrie’s ensembles in the first season?) whilst also nodding to each of their signature aesthetics. And if anyone could understand where to take 50-something Carrie's wardrobe, it would be someone who has already analysed it inside and out.

I don't know about you, but I spent last night watching the first episode of the new Gossip Girl reboot. Now, we have yet another revival to look forward to because the new Sex and the City show officially began filming in New York City today. That's right: Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte are back in action and wearing some very on-brand outfits for each of their characters. (Sadly, Samantha will not be part of the new spin-off.)

After several years of all things ’90s retaking fashion and beauty trends, it seems a natural progression that the 2000s followed suit. But if the ’90s were known for sleek, minimalist looks, the decade after them was known for just the opposite. "Hair in the 2000s was wild because everyone was trying to do something a little different that no one had seen before,” says celebrity hairstylist and Color Wow artistic director Joseph Maine. "There were really no limits and people were experimenting with different textures and accessories. It was a playful time for style.” And playful is right. From dramatic hair colors to iconic (and unique) haircuts, hair in the early aughts was in a beauty league of its own.

Although some of today’s fashion icons like Bella Hadid and Megan Thee Stallion are no doubt inspired by this time in fashion and beauty history, it’s evident that some styles may stay firmly in the past. Lopez famously topped off her braided hairstyle at the 2000 MTV VMAs with a white bedazzled bandana that matched her outfit. 

We couldn’t help but wonder… if SJP hadn’t let her natural curls run loose, would Carrie Bradshaw’s style—and in turn, Sex and the City itself—be so iconic?

Berry’s is arguably one of the all-time great short haircuts from any era. "That pixie cut will really never go out of style, especially if you have the bone structure that Halle does,” says Maine. 

Good news for Kelly: Her two-tone hair color is making its way back again, with celebs like J.Lo and Dua Lipa wearing the look recently. 

Good news if you still love Avril’s slick-straight look. "Straight, glossy hair really never goes out of style,” says Maine, who recommends using a smoothing treatment like Color Wow Dream Coat ($30) "to give thermal protection and add a ton of shine.”

The late singer-actress was ahead of every trend she wore, from her ombré hair color to her deep side part—a look that dominated the decade (sorry, Gen Z).

"This was an iconic hairstyle that was rarely replicated well,” says Maine of Aguilera’s multitonal look. "The sort of preciseness and choppiness of the cut and extensions helped give this a bit of edge.”

The crimper may have peaked in the ’80s, but it held on through the early aughts as evidenced by Tyra (and her smize).

Brandy’s contributions to millennium-era prom styles can’t be overstated. Case in point: This gorgeous upswept braid bun, which would have looked perfect for the occasion.

She flirted with pink, blue, and even brunette, but Gwen’s bleach blonde was one of the most iconic hair colors of the time (it even caught the attention of Martin Scorcese, who gave her the role of Jean Harlow in The Aviator). 

The rapper made her signature short haircut even more of a statement look by dyeing it shades like lavender and red to match her red carpet looks.

Keri’s haircut in season 2 of Felicity caused ratings to drop, as well as actual death threats. In hindsight, though, her character was going through a breakup (who hasn’t been there?), and also, she looked pretty great! 

The megastar has worn her hair in countless styles, but her long, Destiny’s Child–era waves set the tone for her look for years to come.

Don’t go pulling your Bump-It out of storage just yet, says Maine. "The poof is not coming back anytime soon," He says, however, "Pulling the fringe area back a bit more sleek is a great way to modernize this look and even add some fullness to the crown area.”

"The piecey bangs with some hair half-up is definitely back In style,” says Maine, adding that he’d leave "the additional peek-a-boo braids” back in 2000.

Seemingly every celeb wore this gravity-defying blow-out—extra layered hair required. Also, a moment of appreciation for how little Gabrielle Union has changed since this photo, from the 2001 NAACP Image Awards was taken.

For a brief moment in the early aughts, Farrah Fawcett’s iconic hairdo came back in style. Of course, Gisele pulled the look off with aplomb. 

This particular shade of dark red hair color only existed in the years 1999–2002. We don’t make the rules!

Along with her impossibly low-rise jeans, Brit’s love of headwear became one of her most notable style trademarks.

It’s the future she can see? With some slight styling adjustments, Raven’s Louis Vuitton logo scarf is just as in-demand today.

Blame LiLo for all our questionable side bangs circa 2003. Maine says it’s actually a great transition style: "I think side bangs are on the horizon with so many girls cutting curtain bangs recently,” predicts the hairstylist, adding that "The best way to grow them is by blending them into a bit of a side bang.”

Mischa’s O.C.-era waves would make Marissa Cooper proud. "This wavy texture is back in full force,” says Maine. "The best way to modernize this a bit is by using a waver with a [barrel] slightly larger than what Mischa used.”

Next, keep the early aughts flashback going with the 2000s fashion trends everyone will wear this year.

Ah, the 1980s. The decade of shoulder pads wider than doorways and hairstyles dependent on whole cans of hair spray was not an easy time for minimalists or shy and retiring types. Many people who lived through the extreme fashions of the day recoil in horror now at the thought of them returning. Eighties outfits were all about ultra-conspicuousness and being noticed. From meringue dresses and rah-rah skirts to leg warmers and stilettos, Spandex and lamé to door-knocker earrings and giant sunglasses, this was the era of OTT style, and the '90s took a sharp about-turn following the visual overload.

Now, with time and distance from this wild fashion period, not all 1980s ensembles seem quite as hideous as they once did. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if you look closely, you'll find many key looks from the ostentatious epoch cropping up in today's coolest trends. Puffball dresses and puff sleeves are certainly back. Just think of the cloud-like frocks bouncing all over IG. Cut-outs and tight LBDs are popular once more—the S/S 22 runways say so. Oversize suiting is in, as are baggy jeans, loafers and baseball caps. Together, they were the power combo of the 1980s, and today, they're looking just as great in influencer circles.

Where does one find authentic inspiration for vintage fashion trends all these years later? Well, you're still best off digging into the archives, but rather than focusing on the more attention-grabbing looks from the period, it's worth cherry-picking some more wearable outfits from the biggest celebrities of the time. For all of Princess Diana's fancy gowns and prim skirt suits, there were some cool, casual moments too. Every barely there outfit Cher wore was counterbalanced with something more approachable for an average human without a stadium audience to entertain. So from Iman's slick, white trouser suit to Sarah Jessica Parker's perfect blazer-and-scrunchie pairing, keep scrolling for the '80s outfits that made the decade look cool and are worth copying today.

I apologize in advance—I know this is cliché to say at this point, but the outfit Sarah Jessica Parker just wore while heading to her store in NYC is classic Carrie Bradshaw, from head to toe. There's print mixing, a chic camel coat, and eye-catching heels. It's all very whimsical and uplifting. It's impossible to ignore SJP's shoes whenever there's a photo of her circulating so, of course, our eyes were immediately drawn to them. Paired with her bright red pumps were hot pink Gucci logo socks, which she actually started wearing back in 2019, but the logo sock trend is still going very strong.

The beauty of a pair of logo socks is that you can add a designer touch to your outfit for much less money than a handbag, and whatever casual or fancy outfit they're paired with is actually cooler and a little more fun. Given the popularity of both sweatpants and low-rise pants these days, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that the two trends have officially combined, and they're receiving strong celebrity approval as we speak. This week both Jennifer Lopez, on her way to a workout in Miami, and Sarah Jessica Parker, manning her namesake shoe store in NYC, donned low-rise sweatpants, proving that the controversial trend that's already all over TikTok is becoming a thing.

For their respective outings, J.Lo paired her low-rise, baggy, baby blue sweats with a cropped hoodie, white sneakers, and a Birkin bag (naturally). SJP went with a dressier look, layering her's over leggings and adding heels and a puffer (because New York). Given that low-rise sweatpants are comfortable and they look cool, you can probably expect that this trend will remain a thing for awhile.

There are many things that will be different about the confirmed reboot of Sex and the City. For starters, it's going to be called And Just Like That…, a phrase plucked from Carrie Bradshaw's internal monologue and whimsical writing style. 'Tis a new chapter for the New York City gals, one they shall be venturing into as a threesome—Kim Cattrall has opted out, which won't come as a surprise to anyone who keeps up with the news on this cult TV show. "The series will follow Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s," reads the HBO press release. While we all want to know how things worked out on the love-life front, the Who What Wear team is most excited about what's to be served up in terms of fashion looks. 

Personally, I was never a fan of the storylines or characters (apart from Samantha, so boo). Don't @ me. Carrie's incessant whining and fairly terrible track record as a supposed best mate always put me off binging the program as many others did, and it's very likely I've missed a cult-favorite episode here and there. Being a teenager in a boring countryside village, I didn't feel any sort of resonance for their lifestyle, to begin with, but I was always very conscious of the impact it had on style and trends. At the time, the bold decisions made by costume designer Patricia Field rumbled far beyond the avenues and streets of their home city and encouraged women across the globe to be more adventurous with their wardrobes, just like Carrie. She made certain items iconic and synonymous with her quirky, never-predictable look—from exposed bra straps and tutus to a major Fendi Baguette moment. We don't have visibility yet on whether Patricia will be part of the crew when filming starts again later this spring (could it be time for a switch-up? I'd like Shiona Turini as an alternative option), but I have taken it upon myself to do some predictive work for whoever lands the gig.

I hope that her working-from-home wardrobe won't be as casual and uninspired as mine is, and I have high expectations of the new designers and brands she'll want to flaunt, support, and be pretty woke about. There's a great deal of young talent available in the States these days, so perhaps, the mega-brands of Europe won't figure as prominently. Although, it'd be hard for her to resist the eclecticism of Gucci. But most of all, I don't think the journalist should be approaching her style any differently for turning 50. Age-appropriateness needs to be removed from our minds once and for all, and perhaps, this SATC renaissance might be the catalyst for a shift in perceptions. 

Will Carrie succumb to trainers and sensible flat shoes? Could she ever own a—gasp—tracksuit? Fingers crossed she'll come back to our screens with a big dose of fashion escapism instead of anything too realistic because goodness knows we all need it. I can't hear the plinky-plonky theme tune without instantly conjuring the pink bodysuit and tutu to mind. The flouncy, voluminous looks and cute colors followed Carrie right through her journey from the TV series to SATC movies, so I'm sure the idea will continue, especially considering this kind of look is particularly popular in 2021.

There are many things that will be different about the confirmed reboot of Sex and the City. For starters, it's going to be called And Just Like That…, a phrase plucked from Carrie Bradshaw's internal monologue and whimsical writing style. 'Tis a new chapter for the New York City gals, one they shall be venturing into as a threesome—Kim Cattrall has opted out, which won't come as a surprise to anyone who keeps up with the news on this cult TV show. "The series will follow Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s," reads the HBO press release. While we all want to know how things worked out on the love-life front, the Who What Wear team is most excited about what's to be served up in terms of fashion looks. 

Personally, I was never a fan of the storylines or characters (apart from Samantha, so boo). Don't @ me. Carrie's incessant whining and fairly terrible track record as a supposed best mate always put me off binging the programme as many others did, and it's very likely I've missed a cult-favourite episode here and there. Being a teenager in a boring countryside village, I didn't feel any sort of resonance for their lifestyle to begin with, but I was always very conscious of the impact it had on style and trends. At the time, the bold decisions made by costume designer Patricia Field rumbled far beyond the avenues and streets of their home city and encouraged women across the globe to be more adventurous with their wardrobes, just like Carrie. She made certain items iconic and synonymous with her quirky, never-predictable look—from exposed bra straps and tutus to a major Fendi Baguette moment. We don't have visibility yet on whether Patricia will be part of the crew when filming starts again later this spring (could it be time for a switch up? I'd like Shiona Turini as an alternative option), but I have taken it upon myself to do some predictive work for whoever lands the gig.

I hope that her working-from-home wardrobe won't be as casual and uninspired as mine is, and I have high expectations of the new designers and brands she'll want to flaunt, support, and be pretty woke about. There's a great deal of young talent available in the States these days, so perhaps, the mega-brands of Europe won't figure as prominently. Although, it'd be hard for her to resist the eclecticism of Gucci. But most of all, I don't think the journalist should be approaching her style any differently for turning 50. Age-appropriateness needs to be removed from our minds once and for all, and perhaps, this SATC renaissance might be the catalyst for a shift in perceptions. 

Will Carrie succumb to trainers and sensible flat shoes? Could she ever own a—gasp—tracksuit? Fingers crossed she'll come back to our screens with a big dose of fashion escapism instead of anything too realistic because goodness knows we all need it. So below you'll find the outfits I'd really like to see Carrie wear for the modern age, based upon some of her best looks from seasons past.

I can't hear the plinky-plonky theme tune without instantly conjuring the pink bodysuit and tutu to mind. The flouncy, voluminous looks and cute colours followed Carrie right through her journey from the TV series to SATC movies, so I'm sure the idea will continue, especially considering this kind of look is particularly popular in 2021.

2. The Sassy LBD

From teeny-tiny jersey creations like this one to wrap dresses and more sombre options (see the above tube dress pictured with the rest of the SATC crew), these women sure knew how to invest in little black dresses for all occasions.

There's a current runway trend for black dresses that are barely there, so we're certain Carrie will find a new iteration for her 2021 wardrobe.

3. Crop Tops and Bra Tops

Madonna may have made the earliest case for underwear on show, but it was Carrie who made it mainstream. For spring/summer 2021, multiple brands are backing the bra-trend idea, so we hope she can school us on how to wear these in your 50s. Why the heck not?

Am I one of those people who thinks Sarah Jessica Parker and Carrie Bradshaw are the same exact person? Yeah, I am. I'm sorry, but you can't tell me that Carrie wouldn't wear every single outfit SJP has been photographed in over the course of her life, but that's beside the point. Clearly, I think about the wardrobes of both of those incredible women on an abnormal basis, and while the fashion in Sex and the City was great and all, it's Sarah Jessica Parker's style in the '80s that I think about more than all the looks that aired on the show. 

Researching the best style moments of celebrities is a huge part of my job, so when I tell you that my jaw drops whenever I come across one of the striking looks below courtesy of Parker, I am not exaggerating in the slightest. She somehow managed to nail the whole oversized gaudy vibe of the '80s in a way that still feels relevant today. Trends from decades past always come back around, but that's not even what I'm referring to here. Scroll down and you'll see that SJP's style in the '80s proved to be both trendy and timeless and wondering exactly how that could be is what keeps me up at night.

Sarah Jessica Parker's red carpet style, in general, is something I think about a lot, but this early '80s ensemble fills my thoughts more than all the rest. From the fully exposed midriff to the striking beaded jacket, this look proves cocktail attire doesn't always have to equal a little back dress.

Whenever I feel like my arsenal of jean outfits needs a refresh, I come back to this look. Yes, it definitely reads very '80s, but that's what I love about it. Each individual piece has remained a classic over the years, but the combination of the boxy blazer, scrunchie, and thick white socks makes it feel like a fresh yet nostalgic look. 

When: 1987

Once again, SJP slays an event wearing nothing but a standout bra and tailored separates. Oddly enough, this outfit combination is one we saw all over the S/S 21 runways—black bras layered underneath all-black suits. Was Parker lightyears ahead of her time? Always.

This outfit makes me so happy for more reasons than one. The combination of the pearls, the crisp white shirt, neutral pants, and that undone sock and boot situation feels like a match made in heaven. To me, this is the perfect outfit to throw on when you're tired of wearing your jeans or when you need a casual yet sophisticated (yet cool) look.

And then sometimes, Sarah Jessica Parker wore a look that was absolutely timeless. This sleek LBD can do no wrong and her simple styling choices made it that much more iconic.

SJP was big on blazers back in the '80s and even wore them casually as seen here with denim shorts and fresh sneakers. So the next time you feel indifferent to your jean shorts, throw a strong blazer on your look will instantly feel cooler.

See? She loved a good blazer and her vast collection was nothing short of impressive. I love how she let the blazer take center stage in this look by opting for an oversize silhouette and styling it with nothing but the basics.

You didn't think we'd make it through Sarah Jessica Parker's best style moments from the '80s without a denim jacket look, did you? I am not a huge fan of shorts, but this brown suede pair convinced me it's the one item I never knew I needed in my life.

While they might not be the most classic item in the books, fringe jackets are one of those trends that somehow always manages to come back around. So if you ask me, yes, investing in one is a good idea and this outfit proves it. 

Even in the middle of a pandemic, Sarah Jessica Parker is out there showing us all which shoe trend(s) to buy next. It's been a weird year for shoe trends, as some days, the farthest we walk is from the refrigerator to the couch. But alas, we need to go outside sometimes and fuzzy slippers on city streets simply won't do. SJP knows this, so she wore a new winter shoe trend that you'll be tempted to try immediately.

The fresh shoe trend we're referring to is clogs—both flat and heeled (SJP's preference, in this case). This shoe style is hardly new but it hasn't been a trend for a minute, so it's quite fun to see that it's back in such a big way. Even Louis Vuitton has a pair (that's sold out, of course). Clogs look best when paired with casual pieces (like SJP's puffer and cargo pants), which makes it even more of a good idea in these unprecedented times.

Next up, the "frumpy" basic trend Kendall Jenner just wore.

It’s a well-known fact that trends live on a cycle: they become popular and then eventually fall out of fashion. And the same goes for fashion brands. In fact, the most prominent fashion brands of the 2000s are now relics of the past. Today’s biggest fall trends could be the look we cringe at five years from now, and our favorite brands could become bankrupt and totally defunct. As evident by the once-beloved items stashed away in our closets awaiting their eventual resurgence, it’s clear that predicting what trends and brands become beloved by the cultural zeitgeist is a recurring challenge. 

But that doesn’t mean we can’t look back from time to time. Given the resurgence of ’90s fashion trends over the past several seasons, it only makes sense to revisit the trends and brands that exemplified 2000s fashion. For better or worse, the ’00s set the stage for the fashion industry as we know it today, including the rise of paparazzi street style shots, airport style, athleisure, and so many other defining moments.

So, who better to speak to that than celebrity fashion stylist Nicole Chavez? Credited with styling ’00s pop-culture icons like Jessica Simpson and Rachel Bilson (both of whom she still works with today), Chavez was eager to take a stylish walk with us down memory lane. Ahead, we talked about her perspective on styling, trends, and the fashion brands that defined the 2000s. Buckle up, because this time machine is about to transport you back to the era of low-rise jeans.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What led you to become a celebrity stylist, and who were your first clients? 

I started styling very early in the 2000s. I worked as a shopper and costumer on television shows and movies, and at the time, I was working on a show called The OC. That’s where I met Rachel Bilson, and she became my first client. She needed someone to help her with styling for the red carpet and other events, and she would ask me for advice, so it just happened organically. It was something I didn’t even really know existed as a career, but I fell in love with it. And then Rachel introduced me to Kristen Bell. We hit it off and started working together. Bell became my second client, which legitimized me becoming a stylist. I was still one foot in, one foot out. I was still working in costuming and working in TV and film. But once Kristin became a client, I left what I was doing and started my own styling business from scratch. I had never assisted anybody; I just made it up as I went; it was a fake until I made it kind of thing. 

What was it like being a stylist during the 2000s? Was it any different from the industry now? 

Well, back then, there were a lot fewer designers, so we saw this surge of young designers. There were many up-and-coming people that were being backed by Vogue like Zac Posen and Baby Phat. It was an exciting time, and everyone was eager to go to each other’s fashion shows, to support each other. It kind of just felt like a bunch of kids in art school. We all were there to help one another and everyone kind of grew up together at that time. It didn’t feel formal, like today, it feels formal and business and driven by marketing.
