As we race towards the most wonderful time of the year, we're celebrating the art of Christmas gifting. While receiving is always fun, there's nothing quite like the feeling of finding the perfect gift for someone you love, even if you've had a little help along the way.

As we tackle the worldwide issue of consumption and landfill, we're encouraging our readers to practice some more mindful shopping, by communicating with your loved ones about presents and gifts. Some might say the best course of action is to shun the tradition of gifting all together, but we still love the idea of wrapping up something special for a loved one.

We asked Sara Crampton of The UNDONE and Harper & Harley to share her method of gifting, and whether it's rude or inappropriate to share a wishlist with loved ones. "I’m a big believer in openly communicating with your loved ones about presents and gift giving over the holiday period. Talk about budgets, what you need and also what you just purely want, and share your wishlists with one another. The worst thing possible is for someone to buy something that will not be used. It is bad for the receiver (they are left with something that they don’t want), it's bad for the gift giver (they’ve wasted their money) and it's bad for the environment. I hate waste and I hate mass consumption. Wishlists are perfect as you can curate an edit of all the things you want or need and then it's up to the gift giver to choose which one they would like to give you. There is still an element of surprise, and eliminates any disappointment or waste." 

And we completely agree! Below, Sara's shared her wishlist (hint-hint to her family reading!) and we have to say, every piece is worth adding to our own.

Australia is an isolated country. We're an island that takes the rest of the world at least a day to get to (excluding our New Zealand friends) and has it's own unique fashion aesthetic and style.

The trends in Australia don't always line up with the rest of the world, not only because we're in the opposite season, but because our lifestyle requires different wardrobe staples. Linen pieces may not be as wearable in New York, but here, anything made with the breathable fabric is a staple of an Australian summer wardrobe.

Australians are loving swimwear in earthy and monotone colours, with a ribbed texture. Black, olive and white seem to be the most sought-after colours this season with deep wine also emerging as a popular choice.

Overseas, the neon trend has popped up in swimwear, but if you can't see yourself wearing neon, bright colours like yellow and red seem to be favoured, as are polka dot prints.

A slimmer silhouette is being worn overseas, with a Jacquemus-inspired sand the colour of choice for influencers.

Today we’re taking a moment to look back on what women have done in the past year, and anticipate what great things we can expect from women in 2018. There’s no denying that though, women are making a statement. From Margot Robbie’s new production company focusing on films made by females, to Tom Ford’s “pussy power” bags, and even the viral #MeToo Campaign and Times Up movement, female empowerment is front and centre.

We’re all for empowerment, and hope that this year continues on the same trajectory. Women are standing up, without saying sorry, to fight for what they believe in—and though that shouldn’t be a groundbreaking concept, it is sadly something that our society hasn’t seen enough of. While being an unapologetic woman can mean speaking out for equality, not all of us have a reason (or a platform) to do so.

In fact, it can be equally liberating to celebrate being a woman on personal level. After all,a huge component in the fight for equality is in recognising the worth of women, so why not start with evaluating your own self-worth? Because we believe that clothes affect how the world understands us and how we understand ourselves, it’s important to recognise that role that dressing can play in feeling empowered. If you’ve ever found that little black dress that fits just right, you likely understand the feeling.

Since personal style is so… well, personal, we decided to explore the idea empowered dressing by questioning a range of women, each with her own unique outlook. To get a little insight we reached out to some of our favourite Australian style stars to see what they wear to feel empowered, and needless to say, we’re feeling pretty inspired. I could put on a silk dress and feel really empowered in the femininity of it, or an interesting suit with a printed t-shirt underneath and feel really cool and put together. Also, shoulder pads obviously always make me feel like a boss bitch."

If there's one wedding dress style we've been obsessed with this year, it's the off-the-shoulder look. It's been the most popular style of the year (according to Pinterest), and we have good reason to believe the trend is about to blow up even further. Sara Donaldson, of The UNDONE and Harper & Harley, married her beau, Rich Crampton, in Byron Bay yesterday wearing a Jane Hill off-the-shoulder gown. 

The wedding dress featured a sheer panel across the decolletage, with mini bell sleeves, and a sequined body and train.

Kenneth Cole once said, "The average women falls in love seven times a year. Only six are with shoes." Well, if you haven't fallen in love yet, you're about to. There's one style of shoe dominating Instagram and the streets of fashion weeks this year, and you guessed it, it's the kitten heel mule. This style has a short, slender heel (usually from three to four centimetres) that is backless and often closed toed. Essentially, the epitome of chic and feminine. Looking like it was pulled from the costume set of Sex and the City (in a great way), it's not only the international fashion girls wearing the trend, but our Australian It girls, too.

Reason why everyone's still obessed? It's all about balance in an outfit and the kitten heel mule does exactly that. Not adding too much bulk with a boot or a platform, and not adding too much height with stilettos. It's an understated feminine approach with a vintage feel. It's also worth mentioning they are definitely one of the most comfortable style of heel. Like Brooke, Petra and Talisa have done, pair with your favourite jeans and let the shoes do all the talking. Easy.

The past ten years have seen drastic changes in the fashion media industry. Changes like blogging have not only got the industry talking, but also made mainstream media sit up and take note. And fashion bloggers are, indeed, a controversial breed. 

Our fashion contributor, Sara Donaldson of Harper & Harley, joins in on the blogger debate in her second post for Who What Wear Australia...

The title ‘blogger’ has become so unappealing. Is that news to you? Just check the Instagram bios of top fashion bloggers, both in Australia and overseas, and see if you can prove me wrong. 

Ditching the original blogger title for the likes of ‘digital influencer’, ‘digital style publisher’, ‘digital creative’, ‘fashion influencers’, ‘social media influencers’, is seemingly the way to go. Or many are now highlighting the skills they use as part of running their business, such as ‘photographer’, ‘stylist’, ‘writer’ and ‘creative director’.

Not wanting to be pigeonholed into the stereotype of the blogger and believing their site has grown bigger than a simple style blog is a driving force behind this shift. Wanting to be taken seriously is also a big concern. With a lot of negative connotations surrounding bloggers' ethics and the purpose of a blog, it’s no wonder some are getting savvy with what group they align themselves with.

But if you have a blog, you are a blogger. No matter what spin you put on it, if you’re running a site that creates content based around an individual’s opinion, personal style and advice, then you’re a blogger. When the site becomes more than just you—perhaps with the support of a team—only then, I believe, can you formally separate yourself, because your brand could exist even if you didn’t.

I believe there is a clear difference between those that have created successful businesses out of their blogs and those that have not—and subsequently get caught up in the less than appealing blogger stereotype. What’s the difference? Successful bloggers offer a service, education and something of value, not just photos of themselves in different outfits. Successful bloggers take their blogs one step further.

Describing your blog as a ‘creative outlet’ or ‘fashion diary’ is a little too airy and could lead to a lack of direction. Like any brand or business, you should begin by creating a mission statement. What are you going to blog about? What’s going to set you apart from others? What are people going to get from visiting your site? If a blogger can’t answer these simple questions, then they need to re-evaluate.

Sure, you could blame it on the media for degrading the blogger title, such as when they speculate how much money they’re earning. Or alternatively, you could blame it on those bloggers who are simply in it for the perks.

The good news is that those in this group will realise soon enough that this is a job like any other, one that requires a lot of work, thick skin and a long-term strategy.

As someone who has been in the blogging industry for almost seven years, I admit it’s hard for me not to be a little defensive over the blogger title. I’m proud but also humble of the fact that I’ve been able to create a successful career from a passion project, and am comfortable enough with what I produce and offer that my ‘blogger’ title is still intact.

While blogging is still a relatively young industry, it’s a remarkable one which offers low barriers to entry. There are exceptional opportunities out there for anyone with access to a computer and the internet, and for those that are dedicated enough, you can earn an income along the way.

So what can we do to make the title of a blogger something to be proud of?

When it comes down to it, this is in your hands, as the consumers of online content. If you don’t follow them, then those bloggers who aren’t providing anything of worth will have to change their tact or exit the market—leaving only those who are actually creating something of value, the real bloggers.
