Under the canopy of street lamps and surrounded by slick concrete, Jonathan Anderson brought Dior back to Hollywood to debut his first Cruise collection for the French maison. Scarves are truly versatile accessories. We've all seen cool girls style satin or lace scarves around their waists or on their heads to elevate basic outfits, but there's another styling trick that you're probably aware of, but that we haven't taken full advantage of recently. Sabrina Carpenter was just spotted in NYC wearing a scarf in a more unexpected manner than the previously mentioned ways: Her outfit included a butter yellow leather jacket, baggy cuffed blue jeans, a leopard print fuzzy bucket hat for an element of whimsy, and cream open-toe heels.

Sabrina Carpenter is synonymous with a certain makeup aesthetic—it’s wide-eyed, big-lashed, and blushy. Some people say it has a vintage pinup vibe; others choose to describe it with adjectives like "baby-doll" or "coquette." Her longtime makeup artist and Armani Beauty Collective member, Carolina Gonzalez, is open to all of the internet’s interpretations and even struggles to describe it herself. "Pinup watercolor? I don’t know, pre-war? I don’t know what you want to call it!" However, she knows exactly what, or who, inspired it: Alberto Vargas, an accomplished Peruvian American pinup artist.

“Alberto Vargas was a very big inspiration for me as an artist,” she says. “That’s my world, sketching and watercoloring and all that stuff. That’s where my love began. I grew to love his work, especially the makeup in his paintings and watercolors.” Using Vargas’s work as both an inspiration and a reference, she created the now-signature makeup look in collaboration with Carpenter herself, adopting watercolor and oil-painting techniques into the makeup application process (more on that in a minute).

Recently, Carpenter took her show on the road, performing on the Lollapalooza South America tour. Then, she headed straight to the California desert to headline Coachella—no biggie. Despite the hot, humid environments, bright stage lights, and long, sweaty sets, Carpenter’s makeup continually looked flawless, and I can think of two reasons why: 1) Gonzalez’s aforementioned art-inspired application technique and 2) a selection of some incredibly long-lasting, high-performance makeup products. Ahead, read our exclusive Q&A with Gonzalez, where she opens up about what it's like being backstage, teaches us how to layer makeup for a long-lasting look, and even clues us in on the exact products Carpenter wears.

Did you set out to create Sabrina’s now-signature look, or did it happen naturally?

Sabrina is a person who really knows who she is and what she likes. She’ll come with inspo pics, and then from there, we collaborate. It really is a collaboration. I can’t take full responsibility. I just interpret, and together, we’re like, "More or less…" It just developed into that. It’s something that organically happened.

I love that she's just one of the girls with bringing an inspo pic.

She is. Most of the time on tour, it's just her. I don't know if people know that. I'm like, "Girl, I don't think you need me." She goes, "I need you!" I'm like, "Sometimes I see your looks, and I'm like, I wish I did that."

She's so good at makeup on her own, then. That’s impressive.

She knows her face. She has an eagle eye. She'll be like, "This side is longer, just by like a millimeter." And I'm like, "You're right."

Is doing stage makeup, especially for a long set, more difficult than doing makeup for a photo shoot or anything else?

Yes. It's also like a red carpet—you really see what artists are about on a carpet. You can't hide that. If you're doing editorial, you can always retouch pictures, but on carpets, those Getty [images] do not lie.

On stage, she's moving; she's dancing. It has to be locked in, and then we have the quick change. We're just dabbing off sweat, reapplying a lip if we have to.

There has to be a primer. I use the Armani Luminous Silk Hydrating & Glow-Extending Primer ($48), and I work in layers. I do like an oil-painting makeup [technique] because I find that it really locks everything in. Then, I set it with the Luminous Silk Glow Setting Powder ($69). [The quick changes] are all about the powder, a lip, an eye drop, and dab the sweat—you have no time, and it's back out there. So makeup prep is really the key. It's always the key with everything but especially for performances—the prep is dire.

What are the top three Armani products you take if you're going to do Sabrina's makeup?

The Cheek Tint ($40). Right now, we are loving the new color, 63, and I'll put a drop of 13 in there. I mix those two, and I could also do that for lips, too, if I need to. Next, I'd definitely say the Luminous Silk Foundation ($69) because it looks like skin. I can build that if I need more coverage anywhere and a lip [product]. Right now, I’m mixing the Matte Lip Power in 603 and 207 ($48). It’s like a berry mixed with a brown. I mix a lot. As long as she has a cheek, a lip, and her skin [done], we’re good.

Do you and Sabrina ever switch up her makeup look based on the specific show she's doing, outfits, or hair?

We always switch it up because of wardrobe and hair. It's all a collaboration. It's not just about makeup; it's about how we put things together. A lot of it has to do with what she's wearing.

For Argentina, we wanted everything very reflective, so I used the Armani [Eye Tint] Shimmers ($39). I just built those shimmers up. We did Prisma Glass Lip Gloss ($40). In the middle of the show, we just dabbed it off, and we kept it more on the matte side.

We play with different Cheek Tints, too. To lock it in for the stage, I will put a Luminous Silk Natural Glow Blush ($40) on top. It sets that blush and keeps the integrity of the glow, without being overly reflective. If it's like, “Okay, we're gonna carry on from the red carpet to events to the after-party,” then I'll set the Cheek Tint with a Glow Blush.

That's such a good tip. Can you tell me how it comes together before each show? Is Sabrina texting you her inspo pics hours before?

If she doesn't, then I ask. Or I'll ask her sister because the girl is doing so much! The girl is doing a million and one things at once. Sometimes it's just easier to ask her sister to get it or if she already has a look in mind. Her sister has a lot of input. She has a great eye, and she has good taste. Sarah is amazing.

Do you ever get stressed?

The only stressful part is packing up in time. I'm trying to get out the door. I love what I do. I love creating. I love the whole process of everything coming together with stylist Jared [Ellner] and hairstylist Evanie [Frausto]. I get into the feeling of things. I'm a very emotional person, and I calm myself down so much to be her weighted blanket so that she's ready to do what she has to do. That, for me, is such a blessing and an honor to do for all my clients. It's a very special moment. I treat it like a wedding. I treat it like a wedding every time.

I can't even imagine the adrenaline or the anticipation of performing for that many people.

I like to make sure my clients feel good and ready and that they can count on me for that support.

I’d love to know about the process of putting together makeup, especially when it's that layered oil-painting or watercolor effect. How long are you actually spending on Sabrina's makeup before she hits the stage?

It depends on the time they give us. She actually likes to have time to herself because, I guess, it's also meditative. And she has to prep her voice. She has to do these things, so she makes sure that she gives herself the time for that. She's great that way. Most of the time, we have two hours or two and a half hours with setup. There are breaks between those two hours. She's going to eat, go to the bathroom, you know? Sometimes it's an hour and a half. Sometimes she's like, "Just give me an hour beat."

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to re-create Sabrina's blushy watercolor look?

You can't go wrong. I’m so honored to be part of the Armani family because the makeup is amazing. Period. I'm always like, "Thank God they resigned me." Everything is buildable. You just layer it. Everything's layerable. That's the beauty of Armani.

[The] Eye Tints ($39) are perfect for wearing throughout the day. You're not going to have to reapply—same with the Luminous Silk Foundation. It looks like that's your skin. It looks natural in the daylight. I'm not seeing areas that are harsh or not blended in. That’s the beauty of it.

If you have perfect skin and you don't need anything, then do the Luminous Silk Concealer ($42). It’s buildable. Everything's buildable! That's my whole thing. As I said, I build the makeup. It's basically oil painting for me. So I would say either the Luminous Silk Foundation or maybe just the concealer. Then, a Cheek Tint. You can always double the Cheek Tint for the lips.

Or I would use Prisma Glass Lip Gloss. If you want something more matte, then I would use the 603 Lip Power Matte ($48). It looks like dark burgundy, but it's not. I would just tap that on. And the Vertical Lift Mascara ($32). It really lengthens, separates, and it's not overpowering, but then again, you can always add layers. Those are my go tos. Oh, and 99 Eye Tint as an eyeliner. That is my go-to because once it's on, it doesn't shift. It doesn't move. That's my GOAT. That’s the holy grail for me.

Last question. Her blush is so iconic. How do you place it?

I go from where your highlight would be (the top of the cheekbone), and then feather it out. I just buff it into nothingness. I don't bring it too low. When it's [up and out], it snatches you; if you're bringing in [toward the center of the face], it kind of pulls you down.

It's like a blush highlight but feathered into the eye. It always just needs to melt into the skin. That’s also why the Cheek Tint is so important to me because all the products just melt into each other. It's not like you can see where something starts. It just disperses beautifully and blends right into the skin. We also do the tip of the nose. We like it to look like she just got a little sunburn or maybe she was crying a little.

Sometimes I apply it with my fingers. Sometimes I use a wedge sponge. Then, I put the Glow Blush on top with an angled blush brush. I stamp it on top lightly to set everything.

Carpenter embarked on a South American concert tour wearing a bedazzled mani. Her nail artist, Zola Ganzorigt, placed clusters of multicolored gems near her cuticles.

Sabrina Carpenter's headlining Coachella performance set the internet ablaze, due to the set design (shout-out to the car fountain) and celebrity guest appearances (Sam Elliott, Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell, and Samuel L. Recently, Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, and Sabrina Carpenter all sported variations of the iconic, internet-famous "glazed donut" manicure, which was originally coined and created by their go-to nail artist, Zola Ganzorigt.

The original "glazed donut" manicure formula included OPI's GelColor in Funny Bunny ($18) and the Tin Man Can Chrome Effect Powder. This was a silvery-white topper that gave gel nail polish that gorgeous, glazed effect we now associate with celebs like Hailey Bieber. Here's the thing, though. It's been out of stock and unavailable to purchase for a while now. In its absence, people had to get creative to achieve the A-list manicure. Some people used pearly nail polishes to achieve a similar effect. Others turned to press-on nails. Others, still, booked salon appointments to gain access to salon-specific chrome finishes.

Well, I'm pleased to announce that, due to the recent popularity of the "glazed donut" manicure (thanks in no small part to Ganzorigt!), OPI has rereleased the Chrome Effect Powder, albeit with a slightly different name. Meet Tin Man Can Glaze. It's the very same silvery-white chrome effect that we all know and love, with a name that pays homage to one of the most popular nail trends in recent history. And it's the *exact* item that Ganzorigt used to create Bieber's, Jenner's, and Carpenter's glazed manicures.

How to Use It

After prepping your nails (trimming, shaping, and completing cuticle care), the brand recommends lightly buffing the nails and cleaning them with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Then, apply a thin coat of OPI's GELement Base Coat ($16) to four fingers. Cure for 60 seconds under a UV lamp. Repeat the process on the thumb.

Then, repeat the process with a thin coat of gel nail color. Finally, reach for the GELement No-Wipe Top Coat ($16). Apply a thin coat to four fingers, and soft-cure them for 30 seconds (this will leave the top coat slightly tacky for optimum chrome adhesion). Lightly dip the applicator into the glazing powder and rub it over the nail in circular motions. Dust off the excess and apply a final layer of top coat, curing it for 60 seconds. Finish with nail and cuticle oil.

It might sound like a long process, and it might take some practice. Once you get it down, though, you'll have achieved an A-list glazed manicure at home.

And that's a wrap on 2025! (Well, almost). As we're approaching the end of another wonderfully fabulous year for fashion, at Who What Wear UK, we've all been discussing and debating the biggest moments of the last 12 months. The good, the bad and the Labubus, there have been viral bootleg jeans, tour wardrobes, another Met Gala to decode as well as snippets into the new Devil Wears Prada film.

This year was one of, if not the, most exciting years for fashion in the last couple of decades. With 16 new creative director debuts in September fashion month for spring/summer 2026, the industry's musical chairs brought unprecedented change and excitement across the 'big four' fashion cities and beyond. Highlights included Matthieu Blazy's Chanel, Jonathan Anderson's Dior and Louise Trotter's Bottega Veneta.

And it wasn't just the fashion world that was particularly momentous and stylish: in music, both Lily Allen and Sabrina Carpenter have served look upon look for their press and concert tour for their respective albums, West End Girl and Short n' Sweet as well as Man's Best Friend. We couldn't speak about fashion moments this year, without speaking The Devil Wears Prada 2. With the preview teasing just enough to wet our appetites, as well as that iconic moment they attended Milan Fashion Week in September in full character to film a scene from the upcoming film, it's safe to say we we're hooked.

2. A Very Brat Wedding

Singer Charli XCX married her finacé, George Daniels, who is the drummer in the 1975, in September in Sicily. After a very chic legal ceremony in London, the couple invited all their friends to the Mediterranean for a weekend wedding of Aperol Spritz and 365 partying. From Alex Consani to Gabbriette, Emily Ratajkowski and Amelia Dimoldenberg, every cool person you follow was there. Did we have FOMO? What do you think?

3. Labubu Mania

If you've got through this year without knowing what a Labubu is, then you may have taken your digital detox too far. Pop Mart's furry toy monster doll, with its very mischievous "ugly-cute" face became a huge hit not only with Gen Alpha and Gen Z, but millennials around the world. An example of the genius of 'blind box' items, not knowing which character you were buying when purchasing drove excitement, and as such, sales. Everyone from your niece to Dua Lipa, Marc Jacobs and Rhianna had a Labubu hanging off their handbag this year.

Sabrina Carpenter's sensational album Man's Best Friend toured this year, and with it were some beyond fabulous looks from the pop princess. Of all the creative director debuts during fashion month in September, none impressed quite like Matthieu Blazy's first collection for Chanel. From feathered skirts to a contemporary take on the classic tweed suit, Blazy managed to keep the house's heritage whilst bringing into the future. It was met with much praise, and high anticipation for his future looks.

6. Kendrick Lamar's Superbowl Bootcut Jeans

Kendrick Lamar's appearance at the Super Bowl 2025 halftime show generated significant buzz for his fashion choices, particularly his jeans. He wore Celine Homme bootcut jeans, specifically the Marco Jeans in Dark Union Wash Denim by Hedi Slimane. They were a low-waisted, loose-fitting, bootcut (or flared) silhouette, thus proving the comeback of Y2K style, and became a major talking point online and reportedly sold out quickly after the performance.

7. Grace Wales Bonner Becomes Hermès Menswear Creative Director

Although as mentioned there were numerous new leaderships announced at luxury brands this year, none meant more to us, and the industry, than the announcement of Grace Wales Bonner's appointment at Hermès menswear, which had made her the first Black woman to lead design for a major luxury house. Succeeding Véronique Nichanian, her first collection will be January 2027, where she will bring her signature tailoring and craftsmanship to the French designer.

8. Jonathan Bailey's Feet

It's been a big year for Jonathan Bailey. He was named People Magazine's 'Sexiest Man Alive' 2025, released multiple major movies, and went viral for his... wait for it... feet.
In June 2025, Bailey wore flip-flops to the Jurassic World Rebirth photocall in London, which caused much debate online. But these weren't just any flip-flops, they were The Row's Dune sandals, which were subsequently named the "hottest fashion item in the world" by the Lyst Index for Q2 2025.

9. Lily Allen's West End Girl Winter

Lily Allen has had quite a year. Her confessional break-up album West End Girl was released this autumn, and the world has been in a 'West End Girl Winter' ever since. A far cry from Brat Summer 2024, this vibe shift is all about female vulnerability and self-reflection. Of course, her outfits have been just as stuck in our minds as her songs.

The first Monday in May, aka The Met Gala in New York City provides some of the best looks of the entire year. This year the theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, and celebrated Black Dandyism. The surprise of the evening was that critics and the general consensus online, was that the best dressed were the male guests. From Colman Domingo to Bad Bunny and Lewis Hamilton, the men served!

As mentioned before, Carpenter isn't the only fashion insider wearing light-wash jeans this winter. To say the very least, we editors are surprised that light-wash jeans are having a moment right now, at the beginning of winter. Typically, the light-wash hue evokes brightness and freshness, feeling less heavy and more seasonally appropriate for spring or summer. Yesterday, Sabrina Carpenter made an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. Roughly six weeks ago, my colleague did a deep dive into Prada's spring/summer 2026 runway show. She went into the collection's major themes, dissected all the front row outfits, and shared insider information about how the fashion crowd in Milan reacted to the show in real time. What she couldn't have known back in September, however, is which celebrities would wear the straight-off-the-runway pieces and how they'd style them. Today, we have one answer thanks to Sabrina Carpenter.

Not to brag, but I think I'm the perfect person to report on Sabrina Carpenter's most recent outfit, because I am also an owner of the Aritzia coat she wore—two of them, in fact. In what was the perfect fall scenario, Carpenter descended upon Central Park (amidst her string of shows at Madison Square Garden) on an ideal gloomy fall day in NYC, wearing the ideal cozy fall outfit. It was comprised of the aforementioned coat (more on that in a bit), a checked Guest in Residence scarf (which I now need), baggy jeans, pointed-toe boots, and a burgundy Celine 16 bag. I'd like to copy the outfit head-to-toe, and I luckily already have the coat to do so.

The coat I've been going on about is Aritzia's Slouch Coat, which has been my favorite coat for years, and I'm not alone in that, as it's consistently one of the brand's most popular outerwear options. The name is quite accurate as it has the most perfect slouchy fit imaginable. The double-breasted, lined coat is warmer than it looks without being isn't annoyingly heavy, and it's made of recycled camel hair and virgin wool. Translation: It's soft. Carpenter's iteration of the coat (it's also available in other materials) comes in at $375, which I happen to think is very reasonable for a coat of this quality, especially considering the price points I see for coats of comparable quality. Not only that, but it comes in three different lengths—a rarity for coats.

Before she changed the name to As Ever, Meghan Markle’s lifestyle brand was called American Riviera Orchard. To the uninitiated, this might have sounded as fanciful as her signature flower sprinkles, but American Riviera is actually a longstanding nickname for her adopted home of Santa Barbara, California. With its beautiful coastline, temperate climate, red-tile roofs, and expensive real estate, the SoCal enclave more than lives up to its Mediterranean-inspired moniker.

If you fancy a visit to this area, I highly suggest making a beeline for Montecito, an unincorporated town in Santa Barbara County. That's where you'll find San Ysidro Ranch (and perhaps even the Duchess of Sussex herself, as she's a regular). Founded in 1893, the historic hideaway is situated between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It's less than 100 miles from Los Angeles but feels a world away. It's an unequivocally luxurious, five-star experience that many reserve for their most special occasions, such as honeymoons and milestone birthdays. While undoubtedly expensive, bear in mind that the nightly rates, which begin at $2495, include complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Continue reading for my honest thoughts on the hotel's rooms, grounds, activities, and dining options, all of which I was lucky enough to experience firsthand this summer. Plus, of course, I'm giving you the lowdown on some of the most famous guests in its 132-year history.

Accommodations

If you subscribe to the Nancy Meyers school of interior design, you'll love the décor at San Ysidro Ranch. Here, the charming cottages practically beg for a rom-com soundtrack à la The Holiday, It's Complicated, or Something's Gotta Give. Clawfoot tubs, four-poster beds, Persian rugs, eclectic antique furniture, and stone fireplaces are just some of the many elements that make these hotel rooms feel like home. One unexpected detail I thoroughly enjoyed: floral wallpaper that, upon close inspection, sprang to life with 3D "petals" made of soft, fringed fabric. I was also obsessed with the customized block-letter sign outside my front door. (Luckily, there was just enough room to fit "Fitzpatrick" on the wooden shelf.)

Most of the 38 cottages are named after flowers or trees, with a few noteworthy exceptions, including the Kennedy Cottage, where Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy honeymooned in 1953, and the Churchill Cottage, which provided Winston Churchill respite from Britain's winter of 1912. I stayed in the Gardenia Cottage (pictured top left and bottom right), and I was blown away by the private hot tub, outdoor shower, and deck with ocean views.

The Grounds

Here, "stop and smell the roses" isn't just a suggestion—it's practically a mandate. The resort has invested tremendous time and effort into its landscaping, and nowhere is this more evident than in the rose garden, which boasts nearly every color of the rainbow. Aside from the revelatory roses, elsewhere on the property, you'll find sycamore, oak, olive, and lemon trees; wisteria, jasmine, and bougainvillea vines; and water lilies and papyrus plants floating in a tranquil pond. Oh, and how could I forget about the lavender that greets you when you first drive into the property? Not since I traveled to Provence have I seen so much lavender all in one place.

If your flora knowledge is lacking, don't fret—people used to inquire about the resort's flowers, trees, and vegetables so frequently that the staff decided to label everything with cute, discreet signage. All in all, the grounds are like the landscape version of an antidepressant. The only thing missing? The resort has not yet bottled its signature aroma, but if they do, I'll be first in line at the gift shop to buy the perfume. (Can I get royalties for coming up with the idea?)

Famous Guests

Some hotels offer celebrities a place to see and be seen. San Ysidro Ranch, on the other hand, is where they go to remain decidedly undetected. (Unless, of course, they choose to share photos or videos of their stays on Instagram, as was the case with Sabrina Carpenter and Kourtney Kardashian!) In May 2025, Carpenter spent her 26th birthday in the Lilac Cottage, which boasts a massive, private backyard with a lawn so green it could make an emerald jealous. When she posted these photos on Instagram, I instantly recognized the hotel's floral wallpaper designed by Colefax and Fowler. (My cottage had the same wallpaper, but in blue.) Another celeb who chose San Ysidro Ranch for her birthday: Kourtney Kardashian, who blew out her candles at the hotel's Stonehouse restaurant in April 2023. The resort also hosted the May 2025 wedding of Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen.

Well before "Espresso" and Keeping Up With the Kardashians entered the pop culture lexicon, however, San Ysidro Ranch was the destination of choice for Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier's 1940 wedding and Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy's 1953 honeymoon (pictured above). Lucille Ball, Audrey Hepburn, Groucho Marx, Winston Churchill, and Bing Crosby also graced the grounds in their day.

Things to Do

Relaxing was my favorite thing to do on my visit. The property really sets you up for success if you too are seeking out capital-R Relaxation. During my massage, for instance, I got to choose from several essential oils, all grown in the resort's gardens. (I chose lavender for its calming properties.) Next door to the spa is a salon for any of your haircare needs. A round of mini golf and a poolside reading session were also on my anti-anxiety agenda. If you're slightly more activity-inclined than I am, the hotel can also help you charter a boat, book a tee time at the Montecito Club, loan you a bike, connect you with a yoga instructor, and show you where to hike nearby.

Dining

I won't bury the lede. When it comes to dining, the most important thing to know is that the hotel's nightly rate includes all food and drinks except alcohol. That means breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and mini-bar munchies are all complimentary, so come hungry. This is particularly good news for indecisive eaters like me. Can't choose between the soufflé or the tiramisu, the oysters or the French fries? Order them all! It's also well-suited to my desire to be surrounded by multiple beverages at all times. At breakfast, for instance, I ordered a latte, smoothie, orange juice, and sparkling water. Now that's luxury!

Non-guests can also dine at the hotel. Many dishes at the main restaurant, Stonehouse, are prepared using fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits harvested from the resort's organic garden. For dinner, one of my many favorites was the Grilled Summer Peach Salad (pictured above in the lower right-hand corner), with Sicilian burrata, purple watercress, heirloom tomatoes, basil, and sungold tomato vinaigrette. After dinner, you'll want to slide into one of the red velvet booths in The Speakeasy, where Hailee Steinfeld hosted her wedding after-party.

What to Pack

Even though San Ysidro Ranch is a top-notch luxury resort, I love that the vibe never felt stuffy or pretentious. On my first day, pictured above, I felt right at home in my Ulla Johnson midi dress, AG denim jacket, and Havaianas flip-flops. All I did was swap out my shoes for dinner. You can certainly dress up if you want to—your Instagram photos will look amazing—but you won't be judged if you want to be more casual. In the morning, Montecito often gets cool, misty air blowing in from the ocean, known as a marine layer, so you'll want to have a sweater or jacket on hand in the A.M. But don't get discouraged—it typically burns off by late morning, revealing blue skies.

Some beauty products ask for my attention; others demand it. That's the case with Giorgio Armani's Eye Tints, which have received all three major hallmarks for hype: 1) word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and fellow editors (I've heard "You have to try these!" for months), 2) social media virality (they're plastered all over my FYP), and 3) celebrity approval via Sabrina Carpenter and Addison Rae (among others). Now, I'll be the first to admit that I'm prone to beauty-product FOMO, so I couldn't let another minute pass without getting hold of one of these cream eye shadows.

Luckily, I didn't just get my hands on one, but seven, in varying shades and finishes. Then, I put them to the test over the course of a week, wearing a different shade/finish every day until I worked my way through all of them. Ahead, read my full review. (Although, spoiler alert: They're just as good as everyone says they are.)

My Review

I'll cut to the chase and say I understand the hype. These cream eye shadows are incredible for four reasons: 1) the texture, 2) the blendability, 3) the long-wearing formula, and 4) the shade range. Let me explain.

First, let's talk about the texture. It's soft and velvety, so it doesn't tug or pull on my eyelids. It's also so lightweight that it doesn't feel like I'm wearing any eye shadow at all. Second (and this is thanks in part to the velvety texture), these eye shadows blend like a dream. They don't dry down as quickly as other cream/liquid eye shadows I've used, which means I'm not in a race against the clock to blend and shape them before they set. I don't even need a brush; I can just use my fingers.

Third, the formula really does last a long time. Throughout my testing period, I applied each one in the morning and left it all day until I cleansed my skin before bed. After over nine hours, they still looked decent despite the fact that I have hooded eyes and eye shadow is prone to creasing on me. The color payoff and shimmer effect were still intact, and I only saw very minimal creasing near the inner corners of my eyelids.

Last but certainly not least, the shade range is stunning. There are so many neutral shades (in both warm and cool tones) to choose from, which makes me think there's a base match for almost every skin tone. And you can make them as subtle and natural-looking or as bold and intense as you want since they're so buildable. Don't sleep on the "fun" shades either. The icy lilac (Frost), light pink (Sakura), and rich burgundy (Mahogany) are worthy of any eye shadow collection.

If her name doesn’t ring a bell, her list of iconic clients (and their trend-setting makeup looks) will. She’s responsible for Carpenter’s signature Old Hollywood–inspired makeup and Gigi Hadid’s pinup-esque glam, and the New York–based creative finds herself pulling inspiration from the past when she’s setting future trends. “Everyone’s choosing their era, but … there’s a shift [towards] vintage glam,” Gonzalez explains to senior beauty editor Jamie Schneider as they dive into a one-on-one makeup session.

Ahead, Gonzalez puts Who What Wear in the makeup chair as she breaks down a dreamy, 1970s-inspired makeup look that pulls from the signature looks of past pop culture icons, resulting in something that feels nostalgic yet entirely new.

Stevie Nicks, Cher, Diana Ross, and Sharon Tate are just a handful of glamorous names that inspire the stars (and their makeup artists!) today. While we might associate these celebrities with their illustrious careers, we also owe many current beauty trends to these ’70s icons. (Think spiky, long lashes, ultra-glossy lips, and dramatic eyeliner placement.) Though traditional bell sleeves and flare jeans might feel a bit outdated today, Gonzalez proves that groovy glam will always be in style with this day-to-night makeup look that’s easy to re-create at home.

Dreamy '70s Day Look

1. Minimal Skin Fixes

“There’s something about ’70s [makeup] that feels every summer,” Schneider quips as Gonzalez preps her brush with Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation. “Absolutely—it’s that glow and satin finish,” Gonzalez agrees, tapping her brush into a thin portion of the editor-loved foundation on a blending tray before gently stippling the formula onto Schneider’s complexion. The trick with this step is to only touch up what’s necessary to preserve the skin’s natural glow.

The same goes for concealer: Apply it only where you need it (usually the under-eyes), and be sure to use a light hand. (It’s better to have multiple light layers of product than a heavy, single layer.) For a bit more control, Gonzalez recommends blending the formula onto your skin with a finger.

2. Contour (With Lipstick)

Since vintage glam is more about accentuating natural features than reshaping them, Gonzalez subtly contours the top and bottom of the lips with matte lipstick to offer that “early ’70s Stevie Nicks vibe.” No harsh lip liner around here—and that’s verbatim!

Gonzalez combined two shades of the Armani Beauty Lip Power Long Lasting Lipstick in a warm nude (shade 117, Graceful) and a deep, brown berry (shade 207, Dark Mauve) on a dense smudging brush to get a dreamy Stevie lip. Gonzalez painted a diffused pout that made the lips look fuller than lip liner could, carefully dusting the coated brush across Schneider’s lips,

3. Mix Your Blush

One of Gonzalez’s (err, possibly one particular blonde starlet’s?) trademarks is full, flushed cheeks, and she uses Armani Beauty’s Luminous Silk Cheek Tint Blush in two dreamy shades to achieve the look for us. Cosmic Pink and Rosy Pink are the shades Gonzalez chose to craft this delightfully retro shade, which she then applied to Schneider’s cheeks with a few dabs of her fingertips.

“Eighties [blush placement] was very bright and angular, whereas ’70s is buffed out,” the MUA explains, blending the blush along the high points of the cheekbones and the temples. “Fifties is more pinup-y, where it’s more of the apples of the cheeks—like Marilyn [Monroe].” As a general rule of thumb, Gonzalez leans into glowy formulas for anything complexion-related and '70s-inspired—blush included.

4. Dress the Eyes

The key to Gonzalez’s ethereal eye look is to softly contour the lids with liquid eye shadows, namely Armani Beauty’s Eye Tints. Gonzalez recommends blending these eye paints with a brush for the best results, though she assures us that using a finger is just fine—just start with light layers and work your way up for the most seamless blend. The MUA calls this liquid eye shadow the “perfect neutralizer,” canceling out any redness, hyperpigmentation, or noticeable veins detailing the eye area.

5. Layer Those Lashes

A trademark of Diana Ross’s, Cher’s, and Sharon Tate’s was impossibly long, spiky lashes—and while many involved falsies, you can achieve this look on an everyday level with Armani Beauty’s Vertigo Lift Mascara. To achieve a look that feels just retro enough, Gonzalez concentrates on creating “round and doll-like” volume at the center of the lashline versus the outer corners, as that cat-eye shape can veer too “vampy.” And don’t fear spider lashes. To properly re-create this statement-making look, you'll need to layer your mascara (and lots of it).

“I love a lash. … I love a ton of mascara and a [false] lash,” Gonzales says when asked which ’70s trends she expects will resurface this year. Glossy lips, “blushy blush,” and highlighter are more moments she foresees beauty lovers embracing, which leads us to our next step.

6. Add Lived-In Highlight

Gonzalez injects a youthful glow into this look by swiping light swathes of the Armani Beauty Acqua Highlighter in the pearly shade Halo onto the apples of Schneider’s cheeks, opposite from where she placed the blush, located high on the cheekbones. Complete the look with a touch of shine on the tip of the nose and the highest arch of the browbone, blending everything with your finger as you go.

Pro tip: Apply your highlighter before blush (or add more blush after, as Gonzalez does) to “underpaint” the cheeks for a lit-from-within radiance. If you suffer from blush blindness, no worries—use the same foundation brush that you used before (“seasoned” with foundation, as the MUA says) to go back over the edges of your blush placement to diffuse any harsh lines.

7. Freck It Up

Keeping the skin as natural-looking as possible is key with this look, so Gonzalez dipped a small, angled eyeliner brush into the Armani Beauty Eye Tint (but any cool-toned, deep liquid eye shadow will do) to stipple faux freckles onto Scheider’s skin. The MUA used a finger to pick up the pattern on the dots on her skin while they were still wet, dabbing the same finger along the bridge of the nose and under the eyes to make the spots look more realistic.

8. Carve Your Crease

Using the same angled brush from the freckle phase, Gonzalez moves onto the eye step that she describes as “modern, but nostalgic.” (She calls this type of brush “goof-proof” because it offers more precision.) After dipping into a deep brown shade of the Eye Tints, Gonzalez sketches a dramatic semicircle-shaped line slightly above the crease of Schneider’s eye to emulate Sharon Tate’s signature look. “I like that it’s more rounded, it’s not a cut crease that [goes] outward,” says Gonzalez. “It gives it more of that Twiggy [look],” she adds.

Gonzalez stands by the notion that the more imperfect this liner, the more authentic it looks. “If you ever watch Sharon Tate videos where she’s doing her makeup, she would literally just do it in two seconds,” she laughs.

9. Glaze Your Pout

Last but not least, finish off the lips with a swipe of clear lip gloss—the Armani Beauty Prisma Glass in Clear Shine being Gonzalez’s recommendation. She applies the hydrating lacquer only to the cupid’s bow and the center of the bottom lip to not make things too gloopy, allowing the formula to “bleed into everything else” as the day goes on.

1. Glam the Lids

There’s not much that needs to change to convert this dreamy daytime look into glitzy evening glam, but the small tweaks make a big difference. For this Cher-inspired nighttime look, Gonzalez kicks things into high gear with a glittery lid.

When Gonzalez pictures Cher in the ’70s, images of “frosted lids, frosted brow bones, [and] gloss” come to mind. To channel the iconic singer’s statement-making style, Gonzalez swipes a lavender-hued Eye Tint in the shade Frost directly onto the eyelid—right below the crease liner—for an icy, eye-catching shimmer. With this step, the transformation is nearly complete.

2. Intensify the Crease

Gonzalez goes back over the floating crease liner from before in a deeper hue, which allows the look to show up more visibly under dim lighting and on dance floors.

3. Create Disco Blush

What is “disco blush”? We’re glad you asked. To create a flush that’s as radiant as a mirrorball, Gonzalez mixed the Acqua Highlighter in a rose gold shade dubbed Dawn with the Cheek Tint in Rosy Peach to create a natural-looking bloom of color along the high points of the face—almost as if you’ve been sweating under the fractured, spinning lights.

4. Deepen the Lip

Gonzalez prefers a deep berry gloss for evening outings because of the sheer wash of color it imparts on a lip liner–free pout. The Prisma Glass in shade Amber Shine is universally flattering, offering a rosy tint on lighter skin tones and a warm neutral on deeper skin.

When I saw Sabrina Carpenter's recent Instagram post, I audibly gasped—and no, it wasn't the "Man’s Best Friend” album cover that somehow sparked a great divide. It was a photo dump she shared on July 14, in which she bestowed fans with a teeny glimpse into her nighttime skincare routine. It's easy to miss it at first scroll, but my beauty-editor eyes immediately clocked the Lyma Laser Pro propped up on her bedside table. If you're at all familiar with the high-tech device, then you understand my reaction. The buzzy tool completely transformed my own complexion (and I have the photos to prove it!), so it's no wonder the pop icon always sports smooth, buttery-looking skin.

The Lyma Laser is a cold laser, using low-level, near-infrared light to stimulate collagen and cell renewal deep within the skin. Ellner and the singer have long referenced bombshell blonde starlets, including Bridgette Bardot and Marilyn Monroe. The singer previously referenced the latter during her 2024 VMAs look, wearing a vintage, body-hugging Bob Mackie gown.

To apply, I'd suggest swirling your finger into the pigment and pressing it directly onto your lids. Then blend each corner with your fingertip until you have a soft, shimmery haze that gradually loses intensity towards the center. Afterwards, if you'd like, you can take a small eye shadow brush and touch up the inner corners for more brightness. That's it! Easy, no? If you notice a couple stray sparkles on the center of the lids, that's okay. It only adds to the enchanted effect, and I think the look actually leans more fairy-like when it's imperfect, anyways.

Carpenter kept the rest of her eyes minimal, opting for just a bit of mascara. Her blush, however, looks just as bright and doll-like as ever—some staples don't change!

Even though I'm not usually a fan of candied, gourmand scents, Carpenter does them well and in a sophisticated way. In my opinion, they give a nod to the sugary-sweet Y2K scents of yesteryear without veering too far into tween vibes.

For context, Carpenter already created three perfumes in partnership with Scent Beauty. First, there's Sweet Tooth ($30), which is a playful, gourmand fragrance with notes of candied ginger, chocolate marshmallow, and creamy vanilla. Next, came Caramel Dream ($30). This is a rich and luscious scent with notes of dark chocolate, caramelized amber, and smooth almonds. Last but not least, she released Cherry Baby ($30). The flirty, fruity scent consists of cherry, chocolate, red poppy, and peony notes.

Welcome to Beauty's Night Out, a series dedicated to the need-to-know beauty conversations dominating the nightlife scene. Expect a first look at the latest trends, behind-the-scenes tutorials, and loads of going-out inspiration as you get all dolled up—all you need is your favorite playlist.

Pop stars have shaped the beauty and style scenes since, well, forever, but today's crop of It girls have left their marks on virtually every aspect of culture. "Brat" green cemented itself as the color of the summer (accompanied by a confident, carefree way of life). "That's that me espresso" became an acceptable clapback in our everyday vernacular. Beyoncé's call for "denim on denim on denim on denim" inspired a tidal wave of Canadian tuxedos. I could go on! Our favorite artists are serving endless inspiration, which means it only makes sense to close out 2024 with some pop star–inspired holiday looks. Think Sabrina Carpenter's intense blush, Charli XCX's's grungy liner, Tyla's megawatt highlight, and Ariana Grande's feather-soft (and Glinda-fied) glam.

So for our first installment of Beauty's Night Out, we spoke to the makeup artists responsible for creating those influential signature beats. (Pun very much intended.) Follow along as they discuss all the steps, products, and behind-the-scenes tips to nail each celeb look, no matter what soirée you have on the docket. The world is your dance floor.

Charli XCX is the poster child for lived-in, party-girl makeup, which, according to Valentino Beauty global makeup artist Yadim Carranza, will certainly turn heads this holiday season. "I don’t know if her signature look necessarily screams holiday beauty. I mean, it’s basically morning-after, 'party-girl' makeup," he caveats. "But I think what’s cool about today is that we’re less and less concerned about specific beauty being deemed 'appropriate' for certain occasions and more interested in radical self-expression." A "morning-after, party-girl" vibe may not scream holidays, but you better believe it screams brat—and we're seeing no signs of the edgy aesthetic slowing down.

To emulate Charli's signature grungy eyes, Carranza first dusts a taupe eye shadow (shade When in Paris from Valentino Beauty's Color-Flip Eyeshadow Palette) on her lids and lower lash line. "This gives a subtle tone around the eyes that gives that 'I’ve been out partying' look she loves," he explains. Then he tightlines her eyes with Valentino's Colorgraph Eyeliner in Rockstud Noir, smudging it out with his fingers or a brush to achieve a slightly messy effect (depending on how "grunge" you want to go). "She also loves when I pull the liner out at the outer ends of the eyes and blend out slightly to appear more 'snatched,'" he says. Next comes a swipe of mascara on curled lashes, but it's not always a must-have. "Lately, she’s been into a bare lash," Carranza adds.

"Charli doesn’t like too much on her skin; I don’t even use foundation on her," he says regarding her base. "Not wearing much on the skin really adds to the overall grunge aesthetic that Charli is known for." Instead, he'll prep her complexion with a dense moisturizer—he loves Augustinus Bader's The Rich Cream but recommends Avène's Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream for a less spendy option—then layer on Valentino's V-Lighter in Rose as a luminous primer. "Next, I use a bit of the Very Valentino Concealer just on areas that need some coverage or to even out skin tone," he shares.

The pop icon also "loves a bit of contour," so Carranza carves her cheeks with Kevyn Aucoin's Sculpting Contour Powder in Medium, which he calls a "perfect cool brown." As for blush, he'll actually dab the Spike Valentino Buttery Matte Lipstick directly on her cheeks, nose, and forehead before blending it out with his fingers or a dense brush. It provides just a little extra flush, he notes. "Try it in shades Better Crying in a Limo or Couture in the Streets," he adds (the latter being Charli's favorite!).

It also provides a perfect segue into lip products, which is always a cool nude (very '90s grunge). Carranza first lines Charli's lips, drawing barely outside of the natural lip line for a slightly poutier effect. Then he applies her lipstick—Couture in the Streets—with his fingertips for a lived-in look. "Try applying some product to the back of your hand then picking up the product with your finger and lightly dabbing it on [your] lips," he explains. "Don’t worry about it being too perfect or precious. It should read as more of a stain than a perfectly stamped-on lip."

For those who want to add more of a festive flair, Carranza recommends adding more sparkle to the equation. Try topping the taupe eye shadow with a shimmery champagne shade or applying it to the high points of your cheekbones for a glitzy highlighting effect. You could even add an allover dusting of glitter—Carranza loves the clean, biodegradable options from Submission Beauty—to really nail the "grungy party girl" aesthetic.

Your Night-Out Staples

For those craving more of a sun goddess glow than grungy glam, allow me to point you in the direction of Tyla. The singer is known for a bronzy, sun-kissed beat (her Met look—need I say more?) that's actually super wearable year-round. Hey, a megawatt glow knows no season. Plus, "there's nothing like showing up to a holiday party feeling glowy, [especially] when you haven't been getting enough sun," her makeup artist Matthew Fishman tells me. I second that!

The key to said glow is a dewy foundation—namely, Fenty Beauty's Soft’Lit Naturally Luminous Hydrating Longwear Foundation, which has a "glowy, not oily" finish Fishman loves. "You always want to be strategic when creating a glow," he explains. "If it's too glowy, it can translate as too shiny on the carpet, and then it just doesn't look good in photos."

After powdering the center areas of Tyla's face (because, yes, even glowy looks require some mattifying balance), he applies Chanel's Les Beiges cream bronzer (it has "such a fine finish," he says) and Charlotte Tilbury's Lip and Cheek Glow to her cheekbones. "I've worked with Tyla for a year now, and we've played with a lot of different textures and products. I feel like that's what translates the best on her skin," he says.

Tyla's eye makeup typically reads what Fishman dubs "snatural" (snatched yet natural—get it?). He'll first use a neutral matte shadow to give her eyes definition before committing to Tyla's staple: a glossy lid. He dips a flat brush into a shimmery shadow (usually one from Dior's Backstage Glow Face Palette), saturates it with a setting spray, and presses it onto the lids. "Then if we really want to amp it up like we did for the BET Awards—so when the light hits her face, it reflects—we use the Fenty Diamond Bomb," Fishman adds. "It's a multipurpose product you can use on the body [and] on the face. That's where we play with the emphasis on glow."

Tyla is well-known for her head-to-toe radiance (again, that Met look!), and that Fenty product seems to be Fishman's secret weapon. After applying a body lotion and oil (he uses both to really lock in hydration), he taps the balm on the high points of her body—her décolleté, her neck, the center of her legs—so that "when she's on the carpet, she really shines." Fishman then gives her a healthy spritz of setting spray to keep everything in place. "If you're putting on a [winter] coat right over the glow, it will rub it off. Setting spray locks in that sheen," he explains.

Tyla loves a glossy, pink lip, so Fishman keeps it neutral with a combination of "not too warm, not too cool" lip liners. "One of my go-tos is Mac's Lip Liner Pencil in Chestnut," he says. "It's a perfect amount of warmth on the lips because she loves a pinkier undertone." He goes in with a mauve-pink shade from Charlotte Tilbury for the center of her lips, then tops it off with a clear gloss. "A staple in the Tyla kit is always the clear lip gloss from MAC. We can't live without that," he shares.

Your Night-Out Staples

From her angelic Met look to the many ethereal moments during her Wicked press tour, Ariana Grande's signature glam has become positively Glinda-fied—dreamy, playful, with (of course) hints of pink. "I think the holidays are always a great time to add a touch of magic, a sparkle or a snowy accent to the eyes or lashes," her makeup artist Michael Anthony tells me. In other words, there's never a better opportunity to channel your inner witch.

Grande's angelic glam always starts with a "feathery-soft sculpted complexion," Anthony says. He first applies an even layer of foundation before using cream bronzer to contour underneath the cheekbones, around the hairline, and a smidge underneath the jawline. "This will blend nicely into the foundation since it’s not set yet," he notes. A dab of concealer on the under-eyes, then he'll set the foundation and contour with a deeper shade of mineral powder (or he'll just use powder bronzer). "This gives a seamless structure to the face and stabilizes the makeup without looking too powdery," he adds.

As for blush and highlighter, Anthony keeps it minimal—just a touch of pink on the high points of the cheeks to add a natural flush. "I think less is more when it comes to blush and highlighter—unless it’s for stage or beauty editorial," he explains. "For everyday, I like a soft matte finish with highlights on the tip of the nose and lids."

Speaking of lids, he likes to prep Grande's with a custom Sweetener Concealer cocktail: Fair 1, a pure bright white, mixed with her regular shade to "brighten and lighten the lids." He'll then buff a caramel shade on the outer corner of Grande's eyes toward her temples. Next, he swipes on nude shadows from her Midnight Shadows Eyeshadow Palette in Babydoll to further define her lids. "The definition close to the lashes on the outer third of the eye aligns with the cheek contour, so there’s a nice harmony and upswept feeling to the makeup," he shares.

Next comes liner, which he likes to apply using a tight angled brush close to the lash line—unless, of course, he's crafting a graphic look. "This is something I’ve always enjoyed and get to play with a lot on Ari," he says. "I’ll craft lashes or crystal decals and have a wardrobe of choices for us to try on and experiment with." That said, a graphic cat eye is certainly one of his favorites (seen here). "We follow the open leaf–like shape using the R.E.M. white eye kohl," he explains.

For lips, he recommends using R.E.M.'s Practically Permanent Lip Stain Marker followed by the brand's plumping gloss in the shade Pink Razor for a highlighting effect. "It really is such a wonderful combo that works so well on camera and in person," he notes. "If and when the lip gloss comes off, even hours later, you’ve still got a beautiful tinted lip thanks to the stain underneath!"

The result is stunning on its own, but feel free to use this lineup as your Ari-inspired template for holiday party season. According to Anthony, it leaves tons of room for you to play, be it with a red lip, crystal liner, or flashy liquid shadow. (He suggests dabbing R.E.M.'s Fembot on the center of the lids.) "Your base makeup supports any and all of it," he adds.

Your Night-Out Staples

Finally, we have the reigning queen of girly pop. Known for bright-pink cheeks and doll eyes, Sabrina Carpenter's glam is practically made for the holidays. "You can’t go wrong with a glossy lip, a bold cheek, and gorgeous long lashes for any holiday party. "[Sabrina's] is a nostalgic look with the long lashes and bold blush, almost like a pinup girl with a modern twist," says her makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez.

Dewy skin is the name of the game here, which Gonzalez masters with a toner ("I love the Rose Water Toner by Heritage Store," she says) and 111Skin's Black Diamond Cream. She also will layer on Mario Badescu's Lip Mask to prep Carpenter's lips. "This way, by the time I get to the lip color, the lips are soft and moisturized." After priming Carpenter's skin, Gonzalez uses Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation and Concealer for a glowy base that "won't get cakey." She uses that same concealer in a shade four to five hues deeper to contour the hairline, cheekbones, and underneath the chin.

Now, for the main event—Carpenter's signature blush. "To re-create the look, opt for Luminous Silk Cheek Tint in shades 53 and 62," Gonzalez says. "Mix the shades on your hand, and then start tapping into the skin either with your finger or a brush." Don't be afraid to really load on the pigment; "blush blindness" has no place here! She then recommends setting complexion products with powder except in the areas you applied blush. Let the cheeks shine!

For the eyes, Gonzalez says you can opt for a neutral or sparkly lid situation (but it's the holidays, so we'll safely assume you'll go with the latter!). Regardless of which route you choose, she recommends giving the eyes extra definition with liquid liner. "For a more doe-eyed look like the one Sabrina is known for, use Armani Beauty's Eye Tint in shade 99M in a thin line," she instructs. Finish off the look with a few coats of inky mascara to secure those fluttery, doll-like lashes.

A swipe of brow gel ("The Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze Gel keeps brows in place and makes them look fluffy," Gonzalez says), and then it's time to dress the lips. "Glossy lips are so in right now to get that pop-star look!" she adds, which is why she piles on the shine-enhancing products. "I always recommend Armani beauty Prisma Glass Lip Gloss. Shade 1 is clear, and it’s a go-to for me since it just adds extra gloss to any lip color," she shares.

Finally, if you're craving some extra sparkle, she suggests a few taps of Armani's Luminous Silk Acqua Highlighter. "This adds a little extra glow to your look, which everyone loves during the holidays," she shares. Apply to the high points of your cheekbones, your nose, and anywhere you're craving more glow.

Sabrina Carpenter's bouncy and voluminous hair is enviable. For proof, scroll through Instagram and TikTok, where you'll find countless tutorials dedicated to re-creating her vintage, bombshell look. I've seen some that recommend using hot rollers. I've seen others that recommend using a blow-dry brush. While both can be effective for achieving voluminous curls, neither is the *actual* styling tool that her hairstylist, Scott King, uses to create her iconic look.
