Spotted at Sundance Film Festival: Meghan Markle wearing an elegant outfit—what's new? But actually, the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry attended a Sunday screening of their new film, Cookie Queens, during the annual event, and, of course, she could teach a masterclass in dressing for the occasion. There were no quirky nods to their mountainous location, be it faux fur, a cowboy hat, or an alpine cardigan. I’ll admit that when I’m scrolling through Getty Images, I often find myself falling down a royal fashion rabbit hole. Recently, while doing some very important research (read: looking for festive outfit inspo), I searched "Princess Diana Christmas" and sorted by "most popular."

The results were a master class in holiday dressing, ranging from early '80s charm to sophisticated mid-'90s tailoring and turtlenecks. These ensembles truly captured the internet's heart—and mine. Photo archives are digital time capsules of the people's princess, revealing how her style evolved from the ruffled, shy charm of a new royal to the confident, monochromatic power dresser we still reference today.

Sadly, I don't have access to Queen Elizabeth's diamond earrings, but I can copy Kate Middleton's latest shoe color trend. Middleton wore a pair of Art Deco earrings from the late queen's collection along with a dark green velvet gown by Talbot Runhof and matching Manolo Blahnik heels.

I've been reporting on the princess's style for well over a decade, so I can say with certainty that she plays favorites when it comes to her shoe collection. I've never binged a TV show faster than All Her Fault. I watch a lot of television, so that's really saying something. I flew through all eight episodes in less than 48 hours, but if it weren't for my pesky job, I'd have finished much sooner. These days, we don't get Meghan Markle sightings nearly as often as we'd like, so when she does make an appearance somewhere, it's a big—huge—deal. Well, it's our lucky day, because this week, Markle was seen presenting an award at Kevin Costner's annual Rock for First Responders One805LIVE! benefit concert in Carpinteria, California, and, of course, I immediately went searching for credits for her elegant, early-fall outfit. Hint: I found them. For the event, which she attended alongside Prince Harry, Markle donned a very her navy-blue, sleeveless shirt dress with a tie belt. With it, she wore one of her favorite pairs of pumps, a cognac-brown leather heel by Ralph Lauren Collection. What makes this color combination so chic is how neutral yet unique it is. We see black and white, black and brown, and even navy and black, all the time, but navy and brown, especially cognac brown, aren't paired together as often, making the pairing feel chic and elevated. The colors give off an IYKYK energy when styled alongside each other, while still being versatile and easy. No effort required. For Wimbledon's final day of play, Catherine, Princess of Wales, arrived at Centre Court in her best look of the tournament so far, wearing a vibrant, cobalt-blue dress with a large sun hat to protect from the heat, as well as large sunglasses and a slew of beautiful jewelry items, including a Cartier Ballon Bleu de Cartier watch and her favorite Daniella Draper pendant necklace. When she stood following the Gentlemen's Singles matchup to award first-time Wimbledon winner Jannik Sinner with his trophy, we got the complete view of her courtside ensemble, including her choice of footwear. Instead of classic black or Wimbledon white, Kate Middleton chose another chic color for the occasion, a light toffee brown, which will no doubt become *the* summer shoe color of 2025.

Given the color of Middleton's dress, she could've worn any color shoe really, but the one she chose felt extra summery and elegant—a perfect pick for a warm day at Wimbledon. Plus, they were unexpected, adding even more of a stylistic touch to her ensemble.

What goes around comes around. In the '50s and '60s, pedal pushers peaked in popularity. (Say that five times fast.) First, we must preface this article by expressing our sincere hope that Kate Middleton's treatment is progressing well and looking positive. We had not anticipated that she would be present for the King's birthday celebrations, but in an Instagram post on the @princeandprincessofwales account the day before, she stated, "I'm looking forward to attending The King's Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet," providing the world with a heads-up that she would return after many months out of the public eye. The truth is, as trivial as it may seem to document what she is wearing on this occasion, she has hundreds of thousands of fashion fans worldwide who have missed the regularity at which we usually enjoy her outfits. She has established a place in the fashion landscape as a beacon of elegance and composure, and over the weekend, she looked as classic and classy as ever.

For the King's Trooping the Colour Parade in central London, Middleton arrived with her husband, William, Prince of Wales, and her children, Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte, and Prince George. It's rare that we see Meghan Markle at all these days, so when she arrived in Nigeria to celebrate the anniversary of the Invictus Games over the weekend, I'm sure you can imagine our shared excitement over the prospect of getting multiple days (and, therefore, multiple outfits) with the famously well-dressed Duchess of Sussex. Now that photos from her trip have arrived, I can say with absolute certainty that she didn't disappoint.

To view a volleyball match at Nigeria Unconquered—a charitable organization in collaboration with the Invictus Games Foundation that helps wounded, injured, and ill service members—Markle, who attended alongside Prince Harry, wore an especially noteworthy look that included an already-viral striped, cutout sundress by Johanna Ortiz, oversize sunglasses by Heidi Merrick, and a bevy of Cartier jewelry. Those weren't even the pieces in the ensemble that stood out to me most. Rather, it was the actress, entrepreneur, and philanthropist's choice of footwear that caught my eye.

On Meghan Markle: Martin Grant dress

It's not like we've never seen a royal wearing denim before (we're looking at you, Princess Kate), but when we spotted Charlotte Casiraghi of Monaco at the Chanel couture show, we almost did a double take.

Compared to other European royals, the princess (a granddaughter of the über-elegant Princess Grace) seldom participates in public events. But when she does, her outfits are on point—and dare we say a bit more accessible than the glamorous gowns worn to black-tie affairs. 

Styled in the brand's signature black-and-white herringbone jacket, this low-key royal kept things casual but polished in a pair of slim, ankle-length jeans, cap-toe Mary Janes, and a quilted Chanel handbag. Wearable everywhere from couture shows to cafés, this outfit has a je ne sais quoi that makes it a go-to for almost any occasion. 

But since we're not quite regal enough to have an entire winter wardrobe comprised of Chanel designs at our disposal, we decided to do what we do best: re-create the look with similarly stylish pieces. When you're a royal, there are a lot of fashion rules to follow. And, although restrictive, it is for good reason. From the color of your nail polish to the length of your tennis shorts, every element of an outfit is photographed and then scrutinized by the public. So it's no surprise that several of the most fashionable members of royal families around the globe have come up with a few styling tricks that adhere to attire guidelines without compromising personal style preferences. The easiest and most frequently observed formula is monochrome dressing, and in the winter, that means sporting shades of brown from head to toe, including outerwear.

During the fall and winter months, people tend to gravitate toward darker hues like black, navy, and gray. But royals, for better or worse, need to stand out in crowds and photograph well, with and without a jacket. That's why almost every royal has been spotted in a camel-colored wool coat when stepping out for events in the cold. While you can reliably find her in pointy-toe pumps, she gave her feet a break in a pair of Martinelli loafers while attending a journalism seminar in Logrono, Spain.

To complete the look, Queen Letizia wore a Lottusse leather trench coat, Pomandère trousers, a Nina Ricci handbag, and Gold & Roses earrings. While I love a good tiara moment as much as the next person, I'm always intrigued to see what royals wear for more casual occasions. In this instance, her trousers and flat shoes strike the perfect balance between formality and approachability.

I certainly love a tiara moment as much as the next person, but I equally revel in Kate Middleton's more casual outfits. For outdoor activities, she always nails the balance between looking posh and put-together yet still practical and approachable. Naturally, her latest appearance is no exception.

The Prince and Princess of Wales traveled to Scotland this week to visit a charity called Day1, which is focused on mentoring and providing mental health support to vulnerable young people. Royal fashion fans, there's a new kid on the block: Princess Leonor. On her 18th birthday today, the future queen of Spain attended a ceremony in Madrid where she pledged allegiance to the Spanish constitution. For the occasion, she wore a striking white pantsuit, which not only is a royal favorite but also has a hidden meaning.

White is symbolic of the women's suffrage movement of the early 1900s. In the U.S., women were first granted the right to vote in 1920, and Spain followed more than decade later in 1931. Many prominent women have chosen to wear white for historic moments. For instance, Vice President Kamala Harris wore a white pantsuit when she became the first female VP, and ditto Hillary Clinton when she became America's first female presidential nominee. Across fashion, off-the-shoulder silhouettes have been gaining momentum as the chic older sister to a basic tee, tank, or in this case, blazer. It adds a touch of sexiness while also maintaining an undeniable air of elegance and sophistication. When I was 19, I worked in a small clothing boutique that sold a surprisingly impressive designer assortment for a college town such as mine. On the ready-to-wear side, its racks were lined with Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Lauren Manoogian, and Samuji. And for denim, we exclusively sold Frame Denim, the brand every LA and NYC fashion girl was wearing at the time. I adored every pair from the brand and too often spent my entire paycheque on jeans. 

One pair, in particular, that I bought and subsequently wore roughly three times a week every summer for years, was Frame’s Le Skinny de Jeanne style in white. When I graduated and moved to New York, I left a ton of clothing items behind, donating most of them and selling the rest. Those jeans were one of the pieces I parted ways with, an act I’m now very much regretting after spotting the exact same pair on none other than Meghan Markle. 

Markle was seen exiting an office in Montecito, California wearing arguably the chicest, most luxurious outfit I've ever seen, consisting of a camel-colored robe coat, a cream sweater, an Hermès shawl, Chanel slingbacks, and an oversize, all-white Goyard tote. But even with all of that draped on her, the fashion item that my eyes were immediately drawn to were her jeans, the same exact pair of white Frame skinnies that I owned in college. Envious, I immediately started searching the internet for a pair to replace the ones I got rid of five years ago.

Wimbledon regular Kate Middleton attended her first match of the year yesterday wearing a look we won't soon forget. As far as sporting events go, Wimbledon is quite fancy, and attendees tend to dress up—Middleton especially, as all eyes are on her (and the players, of course). While there are no wardrobe requirements for spectators, they're encouraged to dress "smartly." Middleton nails that request every time.

The outfit I'm referring to is one of my favorite Wimbledon looks from Middleton. She wore one of Balmain's cult-favorite fitted blazers with one of the year's prettiest skirt trends: a pleated midi skirt. She opted for a white skirt to complement the accents on the blazer. She finished the look with a pair of white pumps.

Pleated midi skirts are incredibly easy to wear, and you can easily find them at accessible brands like J.Crew and Zara. They may be somewhat trendy right now, but they also tend to be a pretty timeless item, so it's a trend I fully endorse alongside Middleton.

There was a time not too long ago when nearly every single outfit I wore included an oversize blazer. But over the last few years, I've begun to look for other alternatives that don't feel so safe and expected. And the only real contender I've found along the way just got Kate Middleton's royal stamp of approval. (Talk about validation.)

At a celebration for the reopening of the National Portrait Gallery in London this week, the Princess of Wales wore a black-and-white ensemble by Self-Portrait (which is still available in limited sizes at Matches) with Aquazzura pumps and a Chanel clutch. At first glance, her dress appears more like a jacket and skirt, with the top half being the outerwear style I've slowly but surely been replacing my endless big-blazer collection with: the lady jacket. 

Unlike a typical blazer, lady jackets are cropped and fitted, making them appear chicer and more formal. Many are made out of tweed or bouclé, though J.Crew's become famous for designing them with Italian wool and cotton, thus offering up a more casual alternative. While Middleton's take looks more like a suit, my favorite styling method is to pair one with loose denim, ballet flats or kitten-heel pumps, and a simple tee or tank. Middleton wore a spring-appropriate pink Alexander McQueen suit for the occasion with white pumps. But it was her belt that made the outfit memorable. Trendy belts are having a moment this season, and Middleton embraced the buzzy accessory trend. She opted for a white pearl-embellished one by sustainable British designer Camilla Elphick. Next up, eight accessories French women always wear when in Paris.

After the busy Coronation weekend, it was right back to work for members of the royal family, but with a far more casual affair for Kate Middleton and Prince William. They attended the Big Help Out (a day when people in the UK are encouraged to volunteer) with their three children in tow. And Middleton's wardrobe for the occasion was quite the departure from her ornate wardrobe over the weekend. 

For the outdoor event, Middleton wore two of her favourite casual-attire items: Skinny jeans and Blundstone Chelsea boots. But the jeans weren't her typical plain black skinny jeans. She opted for a cargo pair, which she wore with a pretty chambray denim blouse.

I've covered royal fashion for a decade now, so you can bet I've noticed some recurring themes when it comes to the outfits royals wear. While everyone has a unique interpretation of royal dress codes, there are still a handful of rules all royals seem to abide by, whether on purpose or not.
