Those who know me will tell you I’m not very good at timekeeping. I am that friend who texts saying, "Sooo sorry. I’m just leaving now,” when actually I’ve just got out of the shower. I don’t really have a good excuse. Not only do I have the time on my phone, microwave, oven and wall clock, but also there is hardly a shortage of spectacular watches on the market that, if nothing else, serve the single purpose of getting you out of bed, into work and wherever you need to be in an orderly, calm fashion. Of course, that’s not their only purpose—they are also pretty. 

Since turning 30, I feel like I’ve really entered adulthood. Not by law, but in the much, much more real sense that I now do things like take my makeup off before bed, avoid entering my overdraft and actually pay a TV licence. And because being persistently seven to 12 minutes late is a fundamental personality flaw that doesn’t belong in your 30s, I recently made the decision to invest in a watch that I intend to cherish for the rest of my life.

After scouring many (and I mean many) websites, I’ve found myself looking to celebrities whose style I've always admired, asking myself, "If Rihanna can rock a Rolex, why can’t I?” Whilst I want a classic piece, I also want to be able to style it in a fashion-forward way. Whereas Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Reese Witherspoon demonstrate that casual, pared-back watch wearing, Simone Ashley in TAG Heuer is the answer to dressed-up styling.

Style notes: I love Reese Witherspoon. I mean, honestly, who doesn't? Whilst I don't know her personally, she definitely seems like the type of person who always arrives three minutes early to any engagement and never fails to count her steps. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that she opts for an Apple Watch. To spoil yourself, go Hermès. But to channel Elle Woods? Opt for pink.

4. MIA REGAN, TAG HEUER AQUARACER

Style notes: Mia Regan has to be one of, if not the, coolest Gen Z people around. Whenever I see her show off a new outfit on TikTok, which is usually Y2K-inspired, I immediately open a tab and google where I can get it. In other words, whatever she wears, there's a high chance I'll want to wear it. Here, in Saint-Tropez, she wears TAG Heuer, and I can't get enough of how it matches the embellishments on her dress. Two points for coordination, Mia. 

5. JENNIFER LOPEZ, ROLEX DAY-DATE

Style notes: J.Lo on honeymoon in Paris has been possibly the celebrity moment of 2022. Whilst everyone was focussed on her take on French style, I was taking into account her accessories. Two of which happened to be a blue Birkin and a Rolex (ah, that classic combination). It goes without saying that Rolexes are the crème de la crème of the watch world, so one of these definitely makes the wish list. 

6. DINA ASHER-SMITH, HUBLOT CLASSIC FUSION

Style notes: You may be wondering, Does the fastest woman on record really need a watch? Of course she does! Dina Asher-Smith's Hublot Classic Fusion is perfect for those looking for a sportier timepiece. With a refined titanium face and rubber strap, it's less ostentatious than other styles, but as Asher-Smith demonstrates so well, all you need is a black gown, some spectacular jewels, a red carpet et voilà! It's fancy. 

7. JENNIFER ANISTON, CHOPARD EAGLE

Style notes: I can't get enough of Jennifer Aniston's effortless elegance. To me, she is the older sister to Mary-Kate and Ashley—a pioneer of the neutral palette and the OG when it comes to the noughties vest-top-and-cargo-pants look that we've all grown to love again. And is it just me, or do her characters all seem to resemble her in IRL? Here, she's snapped between takes on The Morning Show, and we're not sure if she's playing her character, Alex Levy, or just herself. Either way, I can't help but love this Chopard Eagle—a classic in the link-watch roster.

8. SIMONE ASHLEY, TAG HEUER CARRERA

Style notes: Bridgerton fans, take note! Actress Simone Ashley serves subtle sophistication with a classic TAG Heuer Carrera. Much unlike the costume design in her breakthrough role in the period drama, the Carrera is all about is sleek, slick and understated elegance, with a dash of sparkle with the diamond hour markers.

As a Millennial, I'm not ashamed to say I love TikTok as much as any member of Gen Z. I was recently scrolling through the app while working from home—er, I mean, after work!—and came across not one, not two, but three different videos referencing a classic, affordable staple: the L.L.Bean Boat & Tote Canvas Bag ($30). Don't you love it when the algorithm figures you out? 

Showing off a perfectly preppy outfit complete with an L.L.Bean tote, Tiktoker @jesicaelise said: "Very rarely will I let you forget that I spent way too much time at a private school." I felt that one. The video went viral with nearly half a million views and over 500 comments, with users gushing over their love for the timeless, incredibly durable tote bag, which debuted in 1944.

I also came across @aileciajones's video and then @mippapiddleton's, where she says she was influenced to buy the tote because of the two videos. Many people on TikTok adore the monogram service that L.L.Bean's website offers and have used it to write funny phrases on the bags instead of their names.

But if that wasn't enough proof of its surging popularity, our social media manager said she bought one last week because she saw an image on Pinterest of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wearing it in 1997. Meanwhile, Chloë Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon carried—get it?—the bag into the 2010s.

I know I'm not the only one who's been endlessly entertained by TikTok. Sometimes informative, other times absurd, the app definitely knows how to keep people coming back for more—and this was particularly true when the University of Alabama's rush process captivated everyone a few weeks ago. 

From a fashion perspective, it was fascinating to see what Southern college students are wearing right now, which included the shoes that Reese Witherspoon just wore: Golden Goose sneakers. Twenty years ago on July 13, Legally Blonde debuted in theaters, and a powerful pink goddess known as Elle Woods made her way into our consciousness. Reese Witherspoon plays Elle, a beloved sorority president who decides to enroll at Harvard Law School in order to win back her aspiring politician ex-boyfriend. Although the movie is rife with "blonde bimbo” jokes, we come to learn that Elle is strong, smart, determined, and successful at studying law just as she is at putting together a stunning outfit.

The film is famous for its iconic style moments, including the sequined bikini Elle wears for her Harvard video essay (of which Kim Kardashian replicated during Halloween 2019), the Playboy bunny costume party faux pas, and the hot-pink pleather jacket and pencil skirt she has on when she arrives at Harvard.

Elle’s showstopping looks, which were by costume designer Sophie de Rakoff, ensured Legally Blonde to be one the most fashionable films in cinematic history alongside Clueless, The Devil Wears Prada, and the recent Cruella. (Witherspoon even had it written in her contract that she could keep her wardrobe from the movies.) However, at its core, Legally Blonde is truly a film about beauty. While there are countless movies known for their hair and makeup moments (Mia Farrow’s pixie cut in Rosemary’s Baby, Amélie’s bob, Natalie Portman’s dramatic eyeshadow in Black Swan, etc.), Legally Blonde’s take on beauty is all-encompassing. It’s a major focus from the beginning to the end.

From the get-go, we know that Elle is a woman who loves her beauty rituals. It’s blatantly clear from her bouncy blonde hair and immaculate French manicure to the various makeup and skincare products adorning her vanity in the opening credits. As "Perfect Day” by Hoku plays, we see clues to Elle’s beauty mainstays: OPI nail polish, a box of Herbal Essence blonde hair dye, as well as a few Clinique products, including Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, Happy perfume, and that old familiar green marble blush compact. Clinique’s presence was so evident throughout the film it seemed like obvious product placement, but the brand claimed to have no knowledge of any paid advertising in a 2017 Refinery29 article. (In the story, makeup artist James Vincent suggested it was due to brand familiarity, as Clinique was seen in several other movies that also came out in the early aughts.)

The makeup and hair choices in the film were fitting for the time, though, much like her clothing, Elle’s butterfly clips and glossy lips would easily work today, as the aughts-era trends have cycled fast enough to make it in time for the 20th anniversary.

As one would expect, being blonde is a focal point of the film, and curating all of the hair moments was a concerted effort by stylists Joy Zapata and Linda Arnold (the two were awarded for their work from the Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild). Colorists Nancy Braun and Dawn Ellinwood were also enlisted to help create the nuance between Elle’s beach L.A. blonde, Brooke’s (Ali Larter) more sophisticated New York blonde hue, and Paulette’s (Jennifer Coolidge’s) tacky blonde. 

Not only did they have to maintain everyone’s root growth during the entirety of filming, but Witherspoon herself also wore 40 different hairstyles. There was even a mini documentary about it called The Hair That Ate Hollywood, in the special edition DVD.

Then there’s the beauty salon, where some of the most pivotal moments take place, such as the tutorial for the "Bend and Snap,” the outrageous and legendary maneuver in which Elle described as having a "Ninety-eight percent success rate of getting a man’s attention,” and it’s where she and Paulette meet and become friends. In both Legally Blonde and its sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde, the salon serves as an important place of bonding for Elle and her superiors, and almost like an equal playing field of sorts. (Haven’t we all felt a little more vulnerable with foil wraps in our hair and a foot grater taken to our rough and calloused heels?!)

Finally, it’s Elle’s beauty knowledge that helps her stand out from her colleagues and win the case: "Isn’t it the first cardinal rule of perm maintenance that you’re forbidden to wet your hair for at least hours after getting a perm at the risk of deactivating the ammonium thioglycolate?” she asks Linda Cardellini’s character before serving her mic-drop revelation in the courtroom.

There’s still plenty to adore about Legally Blonde and our beauty and style icon Elle Woods 20 years later, but she proves that there’s nothing shallow about beauty. We already knew that, though. After several years of all things ’90s retaking fashion and beauty trends, it seems a natural progression that the 2000s followed suit. But if the ’90s were known for sleek, minimalist looks, the decade after them was known for just the opposite. "Hair in the 2000s was wild because everyone was trying to do something a little different that no one had seen before,” says celebrity hairstylist and Color Wow artistic director Joseph Maine. "There were really no limits and people were experimenting with different textures and accessories. It was a playful time for style.” And playful is right. From dramatic hair colors to iconic (and unique) haircuts, hair in the early aughts was in a beauty league of its own.

Although some of today’s fashion icons like Bella Hadid and Megan Thee Stallion are no doubt inspired by this time in fashion and beauty history, it’s evident that some styles may stay firmly in the past. Lopez famously topped off her braided hairstyle at the 2000 MTV VMAs with a white bedazzled bandana that matched her outfit. 

We couldn’t help but wonder… if SJP hadn’t let her natural curls run loose, would Carrie Bradshaw’s style—and in turn, Sex and the City itself—be so iconic?

Berry’s is arguably one of the all-time great short haircuts from any era. "That pixie cut will really never go out of style, especially if you have the bone structure that Halle does,” says Maine. 

Good news for Kelly: Her two-tone hair color is making its way back again, with celebs like J.Lo and Dua Lipa wearing the look recently. 

Good news if you still love Avril’s slick-straight look. "Straight, glossy hair really never goes out of style,” says Maine, who recommends using a smoothing treatment like Color Wow Dream Coat ($30) "to give thermal protection and add a ton of shine.”

The late singer-actress was ahead of every trend she wore, from her ombré hair color to her deep side part—a look that dominated the decade (sorry, Gen Z).

"This was an iconic hairstyle that was rarely replicated well,” says Maine of Aguilera’s multitonal look. "The sort of preciseness and choppiness of the cut and extensions helped give this a bit of edge.”

The crimper may have peaked in the ’80s, but it held on through the early aughts as evidenced by Tyra (and her smize).

Brandy’s contributions to millennium-era prom styles can’t be overstated. Case in point: This gorgeous upswept braid bun, which would have looked perfect for the occasion.

She flirted with pink, blue, and even brunette, but Gwen’s bleach blonde was one of the most iconic hair colors of the time (it even caught the attention of Martin Scorcese, who gave her the role of Jean Harlow in The Aviator). 

The rapper made her signature short haircut even more of a statement look by dyeing it shades like lavender and red to match her red carpet looks.

Keri’s haircut in season 2 of Felicity caused ratings to drop, as well as actual death threats. In hindsight, though, her character was going through a breakup (who hasn’t been there?), and also, she looked pretty great! 

The megastar has worn her hair in countless styles, but her long, Destiny’s Child–era waves set the tone for her look for years to come.

Don’t go pulling your Bump-It out of storage just yet, says Maine. "The poof is not coming back anytime soon," He says, however, "Pulling the fringe area back a bit more sleek is a great way to modernize this look and even add some fullness to the crown area.”

"The piecey bangs with some hair half-up is definitely back In style,” says Maine, adding that he’d leave "the additional peek-a-boo braids” back in 2000.

Seemingly every celeb wore this gravity-defying blow-out—extra layered hair required. Also, a moment of appreciation for how little Gabrielle Union has changed since this photo, from the 2001 NAACP Image Awards was taken.

For a brief moment in the early aughts, Farrah Fawcett’s iconic hairdo came back in style. Of course, Gisele pulled the look off with aplomb. 

This particular shade of dark red hair color only existed in the years 1999–2002. We don’t make the rules!

Along with her impossibly low-rise jeans, Brit’s love of headwear became one of her most notable style trademarks.

It’s the future she can see? With some slight styling adjustments, Raven’s Louis Vuitton logo scarf is just as in-demand today.

Blame LiLo for all our questionable side bangs circa 2003. Maine says it’s actually a great transition style: "I think side bangs are on the horizon with so many girls cutting curtain bangs recently,” predicts the hairstylist, adding that "The best way to grow them is by blending them into a bit of a side bang.”

Mischa’s O.C.-era waves would make Marissa Cooper proud. "This wavy texture is back in full force,” says Maine. "The best way to modernize this a bit is by using a waver with a [barrel] slightly larger than what Mischa used.”

As it turns out, the pajama pants I bought at the beginning of quarantine back in March have proven to be one of my best investments as I adjust to work-from-home life. I miss all my nicer clothes that are collecting dust, but I certainly can't complain that I'm lucky enough to work in my PJs. (But sorry to my neighbors who have to witness my various states of dishevelment while I walk my dog.)

I don't know about you, but I think shopping for jeans is what Goldilocks must have felt like when she was tasting the different porridges. Some are too tight, too loose, or not the right color, which is why a lot of us end up with a massive denim collection while we're in search of the perfect pair. Long story short: It's a matter of trial and error, so you want to keep your options as open as possible.

If you're in the market for a new pair, Reese Witherspoon just offered up one idea. She was photographed on a shopping trip in Los Angeles wearing a super-casual, comfortable outfit that included Mother Dazzler Ankle Straight-Leg Jeans, which are currently on sale. You'll notice that the jeans are listed for $160 (down from the original price of $228), but Bloomingdale's is offering an extra 20% off the jeans from now through February 17 only, so the final price is actually $127 if you act quickly. Next, Jennifer Lopez's favorite under-$50 basics just hit Nordstrom. 

What do multitalented moguls Beyoncé, Reese Witherspoon, and Victoria Beckham have in common? Aside from obvious talent, enviable business acumen, and covetable closets, they share a love for the timeless French manicure. 

While you're undoubtedly familiar with the quintessentially chic design, you might be surprised to learn that the French manicure did not, in fact, originate in France. It was created in 1975 by President and CEO of Orly International Jeff Pink, who, at the time, was an American beauty supplier working in Hollywood. "The directors would complain about how long it would take to change the nail colors on the actresses to match their wardrobes for different scenes," recalls Pink. "They asked me to make a color that would go with everything. I thought of using white polish on the tips of the nails. I used it on the tips of nails, then put a flesh-toned polish over it," he explains. This natural-looking nail polish design transitioned seamlessly between wardrobes, thereby decreasing the time it took for costume changes. 

At the time, white nail polish was uncommon and not easily sourced, but Pink changed all that after the studios thanked him for all the money they would save on manicures and idle time on set. Seeing a smart business opportunity, Pink began selling a flesh-colored polish and opaque white lacquer together, calling the set the Natural Look Nail Kit. He then took the look to Paris, where it was used on models for a fashion show. When he returned to the states, he started calling it the French manicure.

Of course, this was in the pre-Instagram era, so consumers didn't have the behind-the-scenes access to beauty experts that we have today. The French manicure really took off when two of the biggest stars of the era (and arguably ever) wore the look on television. "After Cher and Barbra Streisand went on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson separately with their French manicures, people started talking about it," Pink recalls. Carson asked Streisand about her noticeably long and precisely polished nails, and the rest is history. According to Pink, "After a few years, [the kit] was selling like hotcakes!"

So there you have it: The 45-year-old French manicure is as American as apple pie. Today, it remains a classic nail look and continues to inspire new iterations to fit the ever-changing color and design trends. Since it's a longtime favorite of the Hollywood set, it's no surprise that Beyoncé, Reese Witherspoon, and Victoria Beckham regularly sport the design everywhere from red carpets to boardrooms to book clubs and beach days. We've certainly been spoiled when it comes to amazing red carpet looks this month. Lisa Aharon, a celebrity makeup artist whose clients include Rachel Brosnahan, Florence Welch, Gwyneth Paltrow and Anna Kendrick, has a few tricks up her sleeve. "You can use your fingers (make sure they’re clean), a sponge, or a brush, depending on your comfort level and the type of blush you’re using,” says Aharon. "I like to tap or press in the blush so that it deposits the colour evenly. If you need to blend it in further, use a foundation brush with a tiny bit of product patted on top. It becomes one with the skin this way,” she explains.

Ready for one last universal pro tip? Glazer swears her go-to blush trick will change your cheeks/face/life: "Place the two forefingers on the side of the nose and sweep up and out from the outside finger. It is flattering on everyone!”

For square and heart-shaped faces, Glazer says to aim high, explaining that you want to add more dimension to the shape of your face. "Start by using your eye as a guide and place the brush on the cheek in line with the outer eye line, and dust up," she says. "Dusting up will give soft angles to the face, and add beautiful colour." 

By Skin Type

Rosacea/Acne/Textured Skin: "If there’s texture on that area of the face (spots, scars, etc.), cream blush tends to draw attention to those, so I’d grab that powder,” says Aharon.

Normal/Dry Skin: "If your skin is crazy-dry, and the thought of more makeup isn't for you, use a cream. I am a big fan of the blush sticks or liquid blushes that can be used all over,” says Glazer.

Originally published on June 4: Brace yourselves: Elle Woods is coming back to the big screen. As Deadline reports, the famously pink-clad lawyer will be revived 17 years after her memorable debut thanks to Reese Witherspoon, who is "near a deal" with MGM Studios for a Legally Blonde 3.

Deadline reports that in addition to Witherspoon, the same writers and producers of the 2001 film are already on board for the third installment. "The intention here is to make this more about female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture," Deadline writes of the third movie. "The feeling is to draw back in the audience that grew up with the original film and find a new global audience." Stay tuned as we learn more about the exciting news. It’s simple: I tell them to find a stylish celebrity whose body type feels similar to theirs, whose overall sense of style speaks to you, or even better, both, and buy either pieces you’ve seen them wear or ones inspired by their outfits. After all, armed with expert stylists and all the best brands vying to dress them, few people master both red carpet and street style quite like celebs.
