If there's one thing Dakota Johnson is known for (aside from her acting chops and dry sense of humor, which has launched a thousand internet memes), it's shiny hair. For years, people have obsessed over how glossy her signature espresso-colored strands look, whether she's on a red carpet, hosting Saturday Night Live, or on a press junket. I'm no different. As a beauty editor, I've been on a shiny-hair quest for years, and she's my celebrity North Star.

Luckily for me, I just learned the *exact* products her hairstylist, Mark Townsend, uses to achieve her liquid hair look—at least for her recent appearance at the NYC premiere of Verity. It involved five styling products, including a $29 dry gloss that delivers expensive-looking shine.

"It's no secret that Dakota Johnson and I are inspired by '90s supermodels at the moment, and for the premiere of Verity in NYC we decided on a very '90s half-up hairstyle," Townsend says. At this week's Verity premiere in NYC, she wore a shimmering black Atelier Prabal Gurung dress, complete with diamond jewelry and an elegant makeup look. "We chose a deep, dark red for Verity to bring a slightly mysterious and dramatic feeling to the nails, tying the look back to the mood of the film and her character," Qin said in a press release.

We love Dakota Johnson for many things, including her espresso "liquid hair" (aka the shiniest strands in Hollywood), her impeccable street style, and the wide-ranging portfolio of characters she's added to her résumé throughout her storied career. If there's one thing we can expect from the MTV Video Music Awards, it's a buzzy red carpet stocked with jaw-dropping looks. Whether a headline-making naked dress or a literal wedding gown (Stella Lefty just wowed in a silver-dipped dress last night), the event is always an occasion for fashion and beauty risks. However, English singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro didn't just steal the show by taking home the award for Best New Artist. The star, who has been known to flaunt variants of her signature French tips (recently, she wore a red-and-white combo fashioned by Dua Lipa's manicurist, Michelle Humphrey), kept things traditional on the surface with what celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik calls a peekaboo gem underneath. "We kept the classic French manicure as the foundation, adding a delicate shimmer and subtle crystal accents for a touch of sparkle that felt effortless but still special for the red carpet," Kudo adds.

Bachik, longtime nail artist to Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez, has long called nail jewelry the next new thing in neutral nails, and this hidden style is the perfect solution for brides who want to keep things minimalist with unexpected sparkle. Under the nail is the last place someone would typically look for nail art, but when you flutter your fingers as you wave to your guests, clink a glass of champagne, or twirl your arms in the air on the dance floor, these tiny gems will be the perfect barely-there flash of light to complement your new bling.

The MTV Video Music Awards have never been the kind of red carpet where playing it safe gets you remembered. Tonight, the VMAs return to Los Angeles for the first time since 2017, taking over the Peacock Theater with Snoop Dogg as host and a lineup that includes some of the industry's biggest names. When I think of iconic blondes throughout history, my mind immediately goes to Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson. This made me wonder: Is Pamela Anderson the Marilyn Monroe of our time?

Funny enough, when I googled the question, one of the first things that popped up was press surrounding her starring role in the The Last Showgirl (2024), along with a quote from Director Gia Coppola: "She is the Marilyn of our time." As with Monroe, who also modeled before becoming an actor, there’s something much deeper beneath the image they both initially became known for—like that of a performance artist—as explored in her 2023 documentary, Pamela, A Love Story (which coincided with the release of her memoir, Love, Pamela).

Since The Last Showgirl, the 59-year-old has continued expanding her acting résumé with roles in Akiva Schaffer's Naked Gun and Karim Aïnouz's Rosebush Pruning, and she was at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of her next performance in Kornél Mundruczó's Place to Be on September 9. (Other upcoming projects include Michael Cera's Love Is Not the Answer, Brian Klugman's Somedays, and Sally Potter's Alma.)

For the festival, she wore three different looks, one by Monse and two others by Carolina Herrera, inspired by "the colors of the sunset." In the days leading up to this, she attended several other events across the floating city: a Golden Globes party in Oscar de la Renta, a Miu Miu dinner in Miu Miu, and the amfAR Gala, at which she was honored, in Calvin Klein.

Then, after Venice, she was off to New York to cohost the Kering Caring for Women Dinner in Gucci; attend fashion week shows for Calvin Klein, Khaite, and Carolina Herrera; and go to the Hublot x Jeff Koons launch in Magda Butrym. Next, she returned to Italy for Vogue World Milan in Ferragamo on Tuesday, September 22. Needless to say, it's been a very busy September for her, and to my surprise, on top of it all, she told me, "I have a small personal wardrobe and wonderful alliances with brands that dress me for events. I deal with them directly—I do not have a stylist." Across every outfit this month, there was a through line tying it together: channeling Italian cinema—specifically the films of the late, great Fellini.

Below, I spoke with Anderson about her past month—from Venice to Vogue World.

I'd love to hear about attending Venice Film Festival earlier this month.

I’m über-focused on career, and film festivals are brimming with filmmakers—true auteurs. I want to be seen amongst fellow creative people, so it’s fun, and I get an unexpected amount of love and camaraderie. As for a career, there are many variables. You can be a good actor in a bad movie and vice versa. But it’s hard to say again it’s all subjective. It’s a team sport. I kind of like how I’m doing it—I guess I’ve always known how to get attention. Good or bad. Even if subconsciously, I can trigger emotion. I don’t necessarily know how I do it specifically. I don’t really know how to play the game. I’m not good at rules or formulas. I’m not very social, but I love the idea of a “socialite”—it all interests me. Every day is an adventure. Life is the big picture but you live in moments and prepare for greatness. Always. I don’t feel comfortable around false people—I don’t expect perfection in love, relationship, parenting—and definitely not from myself ever… I like the mysterious and unpredictable.

Can you tell me about your looks for the festival?

My style has always been on purpose. It’s always been who I was in the moment. I don’t think I’ve ever chased trends… but my moods, my self-worth, my self- empowerment has been a barometer and what dictates how I present myself to the world. I’m a performer. I thought a lot about this. I’m very visual. Jeff Koons called me a performance artist. Friends used to tell me Andy [Warhol] would’ve loved me—it’s the greatest compliment. It’s not necessarily been about beauty. I’ve always felt a little funny looking—unsymmetrical. I’m not trying to be “pretty” (for pretty’s sake)—that’s only an opinion anyway and subjective. An alchemist—and this is where the actress is hovering.

How did the outfits come together?

I thought of Fellini. How would I get his attention to put me in a film? Maybe it’s all an audition. I’ve studied off and on for over three decades with Ivana Chubbuck and these last few years seriously and consistently. I’ve been to a few of her classes back in the day. I even sat in the back row at The Actors Studio in New York. Though, I haven’t participated. I’ve taken voice, improv, and some dance lessons. I know my body. I was “an animal” in photo shoots because I played what my fantasy was. It may be the unorthodox route. I didn’t go to Juilliard. But I’ve been in summer theater in Williamstown in a Tennessee Williams play (Camino Real) with many students of Juilliard. I’ve always surrounded myself with artists, misfits, the Hollywood wild ones and by osmosis became one. Or I’ve chosen to be alone, marinating in my own thoughts, reading, writing, gardening, baking sourdough. Looking for fossils—curious in the primitive, Indigenous peoples and ways, constellations, space…

What's your red carpet dressing philosophy?

I think I’m in a film—however short. It’s a character not a caricature. I am in cinematic roles. If I’m not in a film, I pretend I’m in a film. Why not?

What're your beauty inspirations and your favorite red carpet products?

My Sonsie Skin has been a game changer. I think about ancient beauty—more primitively—as inspiration.

Do you have a signature scent?

I create my own scents. I have a “love potion,” a mix of essences and oil.

You must be so used to doing red carpets by now, but is there anything that you tell yourself right before or during? I know some people have little rituals or mantras.

I like peaceful and quiet time before. Alone time.

You attended the festival for your new movie Place to Be. What is your approach to getting into a new role? Does it feel different every time?

That’s a complex explanation. But I work endlessly on character creation. It’s a metamorphosis. It starts with my entire life—all that I’ve gone through goes into everything I do.

You also worked with Ellen Burstyn and played her character's daughter.

She is the queen and is one of my favorite actors—Ellen Burstyn, Gena Rowlands, Liv Ullmann. I was watching Bergman's Autumn Sonata while filming Place to Be—I was happy when I was compared to a Bergman actress in the film. It was exhilarating. I’m still learning, searching, exploring. But I know I’m a vessel for something good. I have unique power and a messy kind of grace, and it’s my goal. I want to be good at this, no matter what it takes. I gave up on wanting to feel accepted long ago. I was very young, maybe 4 years old, when I decided that. So I have nothing to lose. I’m trying to communicate. All that I’ve gone through and say—look at me—I’m alive. You can’t kill me.

If you could invent any role for yourself, what would be a dream role for you?

I’m looking at a few projects now that I love. But I think I’m ready for a romantic European drama.

You’ve done a lot of events and traveling in September alone. I love your Substack, and in recent posts, you talk about stillness, and it’s very clear you’re a reflective person. During these busy seasons, do you have any routines for staying grounded and in tune with yourself?

I love my garden. I write every morning. I dream up my next incarnations. We are not one thing. I think I’m consistently inconsistent. When it comes to how I look, it’s not about being pretty for me. I’m not sure it ever was. I want to find myself and grow with any opportunity. I don’t take things or experiences lightly.

You also went to New York Fashion Week. What was your inspiration for those outfits?

I’m just sharing my truth—if not through roles in films, it will be through fashion, gardening, and performing where I am. I love the things that I can just do myself. Those are easier. To maintain a character while front row at Vogue World for only a few hours… or when acting, you need others. You need to be accepted into and be friends with other actors. It’s the hardest part of this: the schmoozing. I’m actually quite shy. And I run from encounters with people I admire—Anna Wintour or Martin Scorsese—it takes a lot for me to go up to someone. I dread it. But I wish I was better at it.

Because I have so much I want to say. I’m capable of more. I just don’t know where to put it yet. I do this every day. I tell stories through lots of ways. I just need a director to see that in me and guide me—I’m fully loaded. I have a deep capacity. It’s inside me. I call her the monster—she simmers just below the surface. It’s in my eyes. I try to look at others this way. Their interiors—not only their exteriors.

There is no time to waste, especially waiting on others. So I’m going to play in this creative space, be free—if finding a way to enjoy a red carpet or comfortably tend to my garden, I’m on to something. Even my skincare Sonsie is expression—it’s interesting to share how to care for ourselves and love through any channel. As for my open journal on Substack (edited by my son Dylan), I would be a little more esoteric and poetic, but he reels me in so it’s palpable and real for everyone. Between us, it’s been a communication source as well.

I am on my path with or without you. I am my own mood board. What makes someone popular? What makes someone an artist people want to see in the movie theater and not just in photos? I don’t know—I’m working on that.

You mention being shy. For people who feel similar, knowing this about yourself, do you have anything you’ve learned over the years on how to handle this when you’re in those types of situations?

I just go into things feeling my awkward feelings. It’s brave. It takes courage. And it’s never seamless when it’s honest.

You said, “I’m not very social, but I love the idea of a ‘socialite.’” Why do you think that is? Is it the type of thing where you admire that quality and wish to embody it more yourself?

I miss beautiful ideas and conversations where you learn something. I have so much to say. But I run in the opposite direction. Brief encounters. But hopefully meaningful. Unforgettable.

You also shared, “I gave up on wanting to feel accepted long ago.” It can be such a feat trying to let go of that. How did you get to that place?

I’ve been obsessed with Carl Jung (and Ingmar Bergman) since I was a teenager. I have read everything and watched documentaries about all of Jung’s inner circle. And have studied every Bergman film. I’m not sure where dreams end and life begins. I am imagining my life as it comes. It’s how I’ve always been.

Someone who never disappoints on a red carpet? Dakota Johnson. Her latest look, worn for the UK premiere of her new film Verity, is easily one of her best yet. The actress, who stars in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel alongside Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, didn't opt for a custom gown or anything too over-the-top. Instead, she wore a beautifully simple and stunningly constructed sheer lace dress by New York–based designer Colleen Allen, one of the fashion industry's newest darlings. For the evening, Johnson's stylist, Kate Young, pulled from Allen's F/W 26 collection, selecting the ivory French lace number.

Johnson has never been afraid to be a little daring on the carpet, which is one of the reasons why we always love to see what she and Young come up with for press tours and award season. Of course, she'd wear the dress in a subtly scandalous way, skipping the skin-tone panties worn by Allen's model in the lookbook and instead going for a black silk bra-and-panty set by Fleur du Mal to add a touch of contrast to the ensemble.

While I'm still holding a grudge against Taylor Swift for withholding her wedding photos, I am pleased that she's returning to the spotlight this weekend. At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27, she'll be the first person to receive the MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. The newly created award will recognize "groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling," according to a press release.

In honor of her upcoming first-of-its-kind recognition, I decided to chart her entire VMAs red carpet fashion evolution. For her first time at the event in 2008, an 18-year-old Swift wore a very twee, delicate short dress. Only one year later, she upped the glamour quotient with a glitzy full-length gown, and she would later lean into this Old Hollywood aesthetic at the VMAs in 2013 and 2023. In between, she enjoyed throwing us for a loop with a wide range of styles: an "I mean business" pantsuit, a playful romper, an '80s-inspired blazer, and more. I was already planning a retrospective on the most talked-about naked dresses in VMAs history—as I've done for the Met Gala and the Oscars—but now, the timing feels particularly poignant. Just last week, the fashion industry lost Bob Mackie, whose scandalous designs for Cher started the sheer trend that continues to this day. Naturally, I included one of their collaborations in this story: the black see-through, sequined frock Cher wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in 1987.

It all started with a "check your DM" comment under one of Olandria Carthen's Instagram posts. You'll often see "Love Island USA Season 7 runner-up" precede Olandria's name, but she wants the world to know she's much more than that. "It's not where you start; it's how you finish. In a minute, that's not going to be my only title," Olandria proudly says to a crowd gathered on the sixth floor of Dumbo House for a panel hosted by Creative Society, a space for creatives to shape the culture via connection, collaboration, and inspiration. Alongside her stylists Matthew and Reginald Reisman, whose roster includes Victoria Monét, Ariana Grande, Coco Jones, Angel Reese, Da'Vine Joy, Niecy Nash-Betts, and more, Olandria spoke about going from a breakout reality TV star to a model, high-profile celebrity, and fashion icon in less than a year. (Spoiler alert: CEO is next).

But this success did not happen overnight, and Olandria's posts on X before she even set foot in the Love Island villa are proof. As I sat across from her and the Reismans after the event, one of my first questions was about her manifestation techniques. "I didn't realize how much I was sharing my dreams and aspirations on the internet. When you have such a small account, no one's looking, no one's checking for you, so for years, I was doing that," she says. By the look in her eyes, I can tell she's still in awe of how her life has transformed. "God really gave me everything I ever wanted within one year," she tells me. Ironically, it's the one year she didn't diligently create mood boards and goal lists. She relied heavily on her faith and waited patiently, unaware that the posts she thought would only be seen by friends and family would come to fruition before the eyes of millions.

As for that "check your DM" comment, the Reismans revealed that they recognized something special in Olandria long before she left the Love Island villa. "She reminded us of Naomi [Campbell]," Reggie tells the crowd. "We wanted to bring that '90s-supermodel aspect that she definitely has out." In Olandria's search for a team post-show, she was looking for a family-like bond, rather than something transactional. "I knew my new life was going to take time away from family and friends, and family is something that I really prioritize and really hold to a higher standard," she says. "We literally will FaceTime for hours and hours every day. I fall asleep on the phone with these guys. I wake up on the phone with these guys." Being in the room with this trio, you can see the love and protection they have for each other and how that translates to the aura she brings to the fashion world.

By now, you've probably seen the Barbie comparisons all over the internet, along with the public requests for Olandria to have her own Barbie doll. "It's crazy because I've always wanted to be someone's personal Barbie. I love playing dress up, and that's exactly what I do with these guys," she says. Now, the world affectionately calls her "Bama Barbie," a title she and her team took a step further with an exclusive Barbie activation at Coachella this year. Talk about a full-circle moment. "Bama Barbie existed in the world to us already, so when we got our hands on her, we were like, 'Oh, you want Barbie? We got your Barbie,'" Matthew says to the crowd.

But behind the doll-like features is a real woman from the South who had a rather ordinary life with a 9-to-5 job in Houston less than two years ago.

Those who didn't tune into the most-viewed TV show of summer 2025 but did watch the 2025 VMAs got to bear witness to the genesis of Olandria's fashion career. Donning an all-red bodice with a sheer layer from Cheney Chan's pre-fall 2025 collection, you'd never even know this was her red carpet debut. "I'd had a few Getty pictures, but like, an official Getty on a carpet, I'd never experienced, and I crushed it." That's a big understatement, by the way. "I'm looking at those videos of me walking, looking behind my shoulder, looking back, all that. I'm like, 'wait a minute, girl, have you been before?'" she jokes. "It made me look forward to even more carpets. I feel like [the] VMAs were such an emotional moment for me, and it really solidified in my head, this is what you're supposed to do."

When asked about what goes on behind the scenes before Olandria steps onto a carpet and that first camera flashes, Reggie's answer is instant: "the hustle for sure." The glitz and glamour comes with a side of grit and persistence. People don't see "the fight for the brands, the fight to get her into these spaces and to be seen [by] the designers and the design teams. It really is a fight behind the scenes. We make it look so easy, but it is not easy." The Reismans make sure to be transparent with her about these rejections "because we need to be in this hustle together to change that and to have the moments that we want." According to Matthew, "fashion is political and you can't avoid the obvious that sometimes race is a thing in fashion and we know that firsthand in reaching out to brands and publicists and the responses we get for certain clients." Matthew adoringly looks at Olandria when he says, "she's been such a champion in having every carpet be this 'I told you so' or 'f*ck you' moment because those people come back, and she just carries that so well."

Since her debut, Olandria has graced many red carpets, including the Golden Globes and Paris Haute Couture Week in January, the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March, and the 4th annual Fashion Trust U.S. Awards in April. Despite being catapulted into this new world in a matter of months, this didn't stop the Reismans (who many call the Dream Team) from taking risks. When Olandria sat front row at the Valentino Haute Couture S/S 26 show, she transported us back to the '70s with a bohemian multi-print maxi dress with fur trim and red heels. In our interview, she revealed she was so nervous about the look and how her fanbase, which she affectionately refers to as her "Ola dolls," would receive it. "When I originally tried that outfit on, I'm looking at it hanging like, okay, I don't really see the vision," she says. In fear of the look aging her, "we opened up the bust, and put some gems there to try to make it young and modern. And then I was like, you know what? Let's give it an era: '70s. That's big hair. Crazy glam. Crazy lashes. And it kind of just became a whole thing." The Dream Team worked in tandem with celebrity makeup artist Ngozi Edeme (AKA Painted by Esther), who used her signature blush technique to achieve a mega viral moment fans can't stop referencing to this day.

Luckily, these iconic looks don't die on the red carpet. Some of the pieces get to live on forever in Olandria's closet, but according to her, the one she wants in a shadowbox is her all-white Vanity Fair Oscar After Party dress. For this night in particular, her one request was a backless moment. Unlike other big events, this dress was her only option, so the nerves were at an all-time high. "Vanity Fair was, like, one of the riskiest things we've ever done, and that was [my] first time going to a carpet without anybody on my team. Like, nobody. I was so nervous," she tells me. The custom Pajtim Raci gown left Olandria almost completely exposed with a deep V, an open back adorned with a diamond Azature necklace, cut-outs on the sides, and sheer wing-like trains.

"Having a backless dress with some double-Ds like [mine]? Some natural ones that don't sit up? I'm like, how are we going to pull this off?" she laughs. The Reismans were just as nervous as Olandria, but refused to let her know until after. They relied on a shoebox full of seven different tapes and a prayer, but that trust is what got her onto several best-dressed lists. "Once I had that feeling of what that felt like, I wanted to be sexy on every carpet after that. That look was the most daring thing I've ever done. I never thought I could go to a red carpet and be that revealing." Don't expect Olandria to shy away from being sexy anytime soon. "I love that we're bringing sexy back to the carpet. I don't like the clean-girl look. We're still young, and it's fun," she says. Though this look opened her mind to how she could show up on the red carpet, she still worried she wouldn't top it. I hate to spoil the ending, but the Dream Team continues to raise the bar, making every single red carpet her best.

If you're ready for whatever else Olandria has in store for us, get in line with the rest of the Ola dolls who work overtime to decode her upcoming fashion looks, keep her trending, and ensure there's a sold-out sticker on every product she promotes. "We had a running joke for a long time: Who's the mole in the camp?" Matthew says of the fans' tendency to predict what Olandria will wear next. "When we land on something, it's funny to see the follow-up, and they're like, 'I called it! My parlay hit,'" Matthew jokes as the room erupts in laughter. Olandria says their spot-on predictions can be "kind of scary sometimes," but she loves how in tune they've become with her personal style and fashion choices.

Despite Olandria's mystique, she is incredibly tapped into the community she's built over the past year and a half. "When you have so many beautiful Black and brown girls looking up to you, even the older ones, I have a job. I have a great responsibility, and I want to use my platform for good. I want to make sure my actions match up with my words too," Olandria tells a room filled with creatives of all ages. Carrying the weight and pressure of being a Black woman who's new to this industry is no easy feat, but she refuses to let imposter syndrome talk her out of these spaces. "When I kind of feel out of place, and I walk into those rooms, and I'm one of ... the only ones that look like me, I don't sit around and wait for someone to validate my existence. I walk in like I know I deserve to be here. I don't need anyone to tell me I deserve to be here." Olandria's success is a testament to that. Expect to see her photos flooding your social media feed during Milan Fashion Week, and when it's time to jumpstart what she calls her "CE-Ola era," we'll be the first in line to shop her bodycare brand.

Television's biggest night is not over yet. After the Emmys were handed out at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles earlier tonight, celebrities and their black cars zoomed all over the city to attend the after-parties—but not before a quick change of clothes! Sarah Pidgeon, for instance, stepped out of the lavender silk Chanel gown she wore to the ceremony and threw on a simple LBD for The Walt Disney Company's after-party.

The after-parties were also a great opportunity to see celebrities who didn't attend the actual ceremony. For instance, two of the stars of The Shards, Kaia Gerber and Igby Rigney, attended an Emmys after-party after skipping the main red carpet. Hosted by Mariska Hargitay and live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards welcomed over 20 first-time nominees, including Chase Infiniti for The Testaments, Hacks star Megan Stalter, Sarah Pidgeon for FX's Love Story, and Carey Mulligan, who is up for two Emmy nominations for her role as Lindsay Crane-Martín in Netflix's Beef.

Mulligan attended tonight's ceremony in a dress designed by everyone's favorite minimalist duo, the Olsen twins. And yet, despite The Row's restrained approach to fashion, Mulligan's resort 27 dress is anything but. It's colorful. It's playful. It's eye-catching. The sky-blue strapless dress teases a reveal of a stark-white underpinning at the neckline, overlayed with patterned embroidery. Mulligan wore minimal jewelry—no necklace, opting instead for stunning diamond stud earrings and a pearl ring.

Just when our beauty inspo folders were ready for a refresh, the Emmys are back and the exact midyear pick-me-up we needed. Tonight is the 78th anniversary of the award show, which will be held once again at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The host? None other than everyone's favorite Law & Order: SVU detective (and four-time Emmy Award winner) Mariska Hargitay.

As a Law & Order diehard, I can't deny that I am extra excited for this year's award show, but the beauty editor in me is also on the lookout for the hair and makeup that will be talked about for days to come. In fact, I firmly believe award shows that take place in the latter half of the calendar often play a big role in the trends that carry us into the next year. When we consider all the incredible, jaw-dropping looks that we've seen on the red carpet in the past, I have no doubt there will be plenty of buzz around the A-listers in attendance.

Chase Infiniti's dress was undeniably eye-catching, and although most celebs who went for big fashion moments kept it simple with their glam, I love that she decided to wear her wavy hair out. She also matched her lipstick to the copper tone of her gown, which added to the moment without overdoing it.

Just when we think we’ve seen every kind of bob on the red carpet, Lukita Maxwell comes through with this retro look that leaves us stunned. The actress let her face-framing curls do their thing rather than slicking them back, which felt like a refreshing take on a timeless look.

Jessica Williams stunned in her purple gown, but it was her micro bangs that really caught my attention. It felt like a chic and playful take on the mermaid hair trend we saw throughout the evening.

Keri Russell is one of a handful of stars that seemingly preferred a slick-back for tonight's event. Her choice of hairstyle feels perfectly fitting with her high-neckline dress, really drawing the focus to her face and highlighting her cheekbones.

Forget pixie cuts and long waves. Florence Pugh shook things up on the red carpet with this playful bun and face-framing pieces. Like many other stars, Pugh also skipped blush to focus on bronzy cheeks.

Julia Garner wore her signature curly pixie cut, but pairing this particular look with neutral makeup felt like an elevated take on the "clean girl" aesthetic.

If you're eyeing the red carpet, you're probably noticing a lot of bold-red-lip looks, and that's no coincidence. Nobody Wants This actress Jackie Tohn sported the trend, pairing a bright-red lip with a side part that gave her hair major volume.

I'll admit there's something about pixie cuts for red carpet events that I absolutely adore. The Gilded Age star Louisa Jacobson brought a mix of elegance and edge to the Emmys with this smoothed-back pixie cut elevated with a sculpted front curl that feels heavily inspired by 1920s glam.

The Pitt star Shabana Azeez was spotted on the red carpet with a warm and dewy look featuring a peach-toned blush, subtle highlight, and very subtle cut-crease smoky eye. Her updo with curled, face-framing pieces added to the moment.

Your Friends & Neighbors star Lena Hall made a statement when she stepped on the red carpet with long waves (a major trend we're seeing and expecting to continue through the end of the year). To make her look pop even more, she added a vibrant red lip that contrasted beautifully with her dress.

It’s been six long months since the last major award show, and for those of us who have found this lapse difficult, good news is ahead. It’s Emmys night. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held in downtown Los Angeles and hosted by Mariska Hargitay, have a long list of stars on the guest list. The traditional award season is January through March, when the Oscars and the Golden Globes attract tons of attention, but September is certainly no slouch when it comes to fantastic red carpet events. On September 2, the 83rd annual Venice Film Festival kicked off in The Floating City, with Amal and George Clooney, Laura Dern, Jonathan Bailey, and Nina Dobrev attending the opening ceremony. Later this month, I'm also looking forward to the Emmys on September 14 and the VMAs on September 27.

This year, the Venice Film Festival will debut a handful of major blockbusters, including Primetime starring Robert Pattinson, Bunker led by Penélope Cruz, and Bucking Fastard featuring sisters Kate and Rooney Mara. While I can't wait to see how these highly anticipated films will fare with audiences, I'm mostly eager to see what everyone will wear on the red carpet. Nicole Kidman does not miss. The eternal A-lister has been wowing us on red carpets and at award shows for decades, and her latest look was no exception. The actress attended the New York City premiere of the third season of Lioness on Paramount+ wearing an undeniably chic look from designer Maria Grazia Chiuri's first couture collection for Fendi. The fall/winter 2026 ensemble featured a 1920s-inspired embroidered lace tunic top with scalloped detailing, a lace bralette, and wide-leg cream tuxedo trousers. The 2027 Met Gala is over nine months away, but we already have details on what to expect. Today, the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed that next year's Costume Institute exhibition is entitled John Galliano: Horizons. It will span the entirety of Galliano's career thus far, including his work as a student at Central Saint Martins in London, and his designs for Dior, Givenchy, Maison Margiela, and his eponymous brand.

The exhibition will be organized into three parts: "Bearings," "Horizons," and "Atlas of Transformation." The first section will put Galliano's work into historical and cultural context. The second part will explore his most-cited sources of inspiration, including geography, history, art, and performance. The final category will delve into Galliano's creative process through research books, sketches, toiles, fittings, and finished garments.

Galliano is no stranger to controversy, and the museum's press release does not mince words. "[The exhibition] will directly address the rupture caused by his antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian conduct in 2010 and 2011, which resulted in his dismissal from Christian Dior and his eponymous label and his conviction by a Paris court for public insults based on race, religion, ethnicity, or origin," the museum stated. "It will also consider his subsequent treatment for substance addiction and his later public acknowledgment of his actions. Rather than presenting a conventional narrative of disgrace and redemption, the gallery will examine how memory, experience, cultural values, and historical circumstances continually reshape the reception of a designer's work."

The Odyssey is 2026's answer to a thematic press-tour aesthetic. Think Grecian-inspired gowns, sunlit jewelry, and glowing skin. (We're still not over Zendaya's Athena-esque inner-corner highlight.) Lupita Nyong'o is no exception. Her character, Helen of Troy, is the crux of the ancient epic, so it's no surprise she's been showing up and showing out on the red carpet.

The Oscar-winning actress and our July cover star attended the London, Paris, and New York premieres with unforgettable hair and makeup looks, courtesy of her long-time hairstylist Vernon François and makeup artist Nick Barose. Ahead, we're breaking down all three of the timeless premiere looks with Barose's help. Allow us to take you inside the press tour with expert info and an exclusive behind-the-scenes photo diary.

Skin Prep

"This kind of press tour for a gigantic blockbuster film like this can be quite a beast, [with] traveling international, time differences, etc.," Barose says, which is why skin prep is paramount. He relies on a few essentials to prep Nyong'o's complexion before applying makeup.

"I always start by misting her face with the [Skwálwen Botanicals] Kalkáy (Wild Rose) Refreshing Toner ($65), an Indigenous brand that Lily Gladstone turned me on to during her Oscars season," he says. "It's now my and my clients' favorite. Its gentle, refreshing wild rose scent is so relaxing, and [it's] the best way to wake up all the senses before I start makeup."

Next, he uses the Ziip Halo Microcurrent Device ($400). "I love using this, especially before big red carpet events, like The Odyssey premiere in London, Paris, and NYC. You really do see the difference right away. It's the perfect prep for the complexion so your glow really looks like it's coming from within. The four-minute facial feature gave such amazing effects and only took four minutes, so the hairdresser, manicurist, and stylist don't get mad at me for eating into their glam time," he says.

As an exfoliating step, he uses Lisa Eldridge's Luxuriously Gentle Cleansing and Exfoliating Cloth ($16). "I often soak this in warm water, then squeeze until it's damp and scrub the face, neck, and lips in circular motions to polish and get rid of any possible dry patches before makeup," he explains.

Lastly, he uses Chanel's Sublimage Le Sérum($560), La Crème ($505), La Crème Yeux ($320), and Lip Oil ($365) to prep Nyong'o's skin. Then, it's on to makeup.

London

"The silver Christian Cowan dress is very vampy and fierce," Barose says. "I drew inspiration from Hollywood's very first vamp screen persona, Theda Bara in 1917, as well as the later photographs of Marilyn Monroe dressed up as Theda Bara by photographer Richard Avedon from 1958." Barose created "sultry, dark, vampy" eyes and lips with razor-sharp cheekbones. He kept the color palette quite muted and created defined eyes and lips with fresh, glowing skin as a backdrop.

The look's standout products came courtesy of Lisa Eldridge Beauty, starting with the Elevated Glow Balm in High Key Light ($38). "I applied the golden-tone highlighter on the top of cheeks and brow bones as well as the shoulders. It illuminated the skin, adding that candlelit glow," he says.

Next were two black cherry products. First, he used the Velatura Balm in Hellebore Heaven ($36). "The black cherry balm adds a hint of colour and shine on cheeks and lips," he explains. He added the Rouge Experience Refillable Lipstick in 190 Bohemian Cherry ($59) "for a seductive, vampy pout." He finished off the look with the brand's Liquid Lurex Eyeshadow in Liza ($30), a chic metallic pewter.

Paris

"Fun fact: Eartha Kitt also played Helen of Troy onstage in Paris for the legendary director Orson Welles in 1950. [Nyong'o's] flaming-red Chanel see-through dress is giving a bit of Eartha Kitt, so I wanted the makeup to be a nod to Eartha Kitt with her famous Catwoman feline eyes," he says. He paired the eye makeup with deep-red lipstick and gold sparkles on the skin for "extra drama and theatrics."

He started with Chanel's Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint ($72) in Deep Plus and Sublimage L'Essence de Teint Longwear Foundation ($180) in BR152 "for the perfect amount of glow and radiance." Next, he used Chanel's Joues Contrast Cream to Powder Blush in Grenat Profond ($56). "This fresh berry tone adds a hint of flush on the apples of the cheeks," he adds.

Then, he lined Nyong'o's eyes with Chanel's Le Crayon Yeux in 01 Noir Black ($36), added full and fluttery lashes with the Inimitable Mascara Intense ($40), and applied a rich lipstick, the 31 Le Rouge in 11 Rouge Coromandel ($198). "This looks plummy in the tube, but on deep skin, it adds the perfect amount of rich red that complements her fire-engine red Chanel dress without being matchy-matchy or competing with it," he says.

Last but not least, he used Chanel's Les Beiges Sheer Healthy Glow Highlighting Fluid ($56), Hume's Dry Body Oil Mist ($25) (which Nyong'o actually turned him on to), and a little sparkle—Ben Nye Sparklers Glitter in LD-3 Gold, to be exact. He says, "The perfect sparkles! I sprinkled them on top of her cheekbones and body while Vernon dusted it in her hair too."

New York City

"The regal gold lace Nicholas Oakwood Couture paired with the Sabyasachi necklace harked back to those glamorous femme fatales from iconic sword-and-sandal films of the '50s, '60s. Think Anne Baxter from The Ten Commandments, Donyale Luna in Fellini's Satyricon, and, of course, Liz Taylor in Cleopatra," he says. Barose created a '60s-inspired look with winged liner, a defined crease, and gold details that were paired with long, feathery lashes and angular, arched brows for an "Old Hollywood screen goddess" effect.

Barose used T-beauty eyeliners from his home country of Thailand, as well as Danessa Myricks Colorfix Pigment ($22) in Goldmine. "I painted this on the inner corners of eyes, center of lids, and a bit on the brow bones," he says. "The gold details added highlight to the eyes and tied in with her gold gown."

Then, he used the I-Envy Classic Timeless Wispy False Lashes. "I love the long, feathery lashes that have spaces in between. They add drama but not density, so the gold on the lids still shows through without being overwhelmed by the length of the lashes. I then glued two of the 12-millimeter clusters from the Cluster Palette ($15) on the outer corners for extra lifts and a feline effect using I-Envy Super Strong Waterproof Glue ($5), which is a must, especially for this sweaty NYC heat wave," he says.

A major part of the look was defined, sculpted cheekbones. For that, Barose turned to a product from a fellow celebrity makeup artist, the Tansculpt Bronzing Contour Balm ($34) by Hung Vanngo. "I was on the Odyssey press tour from London to Paris and NYC with Hung, who's glamming Anne Hathaway," he says. "He turned me on to this [product]. It's so dark and delicious—perfect for sculpting, contouring cheekbones for deep skin tones."

Heat-Wave Makeup-Setting Essentials

It's no secret that The Odyssey's premieres have been happening in the midst of a summer heat wave. Barose says doing full glam in these conditions is every "makeup artist's worst nightmare," as high heat can affect the aesthetic and wear of makeup. Luckily, he has some makeup-setting and shine-controlling staples.

First, he recommends Mehron's TouchUp Anti-Shine ($12). He uses the shade Dark on Nyong'o. "This theater/cinema backstage brand is my go-to for shine control," he says. "A little bit goes a long way."

He also uses a setting spray, but not just any setting spray. It's Mistine's Matte Setting Spray ($13), another Thai beauty brand he swears by. "A little bit of this helps lock it all in," he says. "I focused more on the T-zone, so it's matte and polished while the rest of the face remains glowy in all the right places."

Last but not least, he uses Payot's Absorbing Blotting Sheets ($13) before any necessary touch-ups. "This heat required more touch-ups, which can turn makeup cakey real fast," he says. "I always blot with blotting paper first before each touch-up to keep skin fresh looking in this heat wave."

ICYMI, the premiere of The Odyssey took place in London yesterday, and the film's star-studded cast took to the red carpet. Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron were among the main cast in attendance alongside the recently married Tom Holland and Zendaya. The latter worked her signature press-tour finesse with stylist Law Roach, who dressed her in a Schiaparelli dress hot off the F/W 27 haute couture runway in Paris, and makeup artist Ernesto Casillas, who created her jaw-dropping, Athena-esque look.

"I wanted to give Zendaya a bronzed, sun-kissed, and radiant complexion worthy of a glowing Greek goddess," Casillas said in a press release.
