Growing up, I'd tirelessly devour the coverage of every fashion week around the globe. When the time came, I'd spend hours combing through designer looks, pinning them to my wall for inspiration, and most importantly (and now very relevant to my job title), lusting after the out-of-this-world beauty looks that seemed to get better and better every year. Not much has changed. I still follow fashion week coverage like it's nobody's business and I also keep a very well-rounded Pinterest board of looks spread across beauty and fashion for the occasion.

You'd think by now there isn't much left to do creatively in the world of makeup and hair that hasn't already been done, but fashion week always challenges this notion. I'm always both surprised and delighted by the runway beauty looks created—whether they're a tad unrealistic for everyday wear or not. To give you some insight into what beauty trends are brewing for the upcoming spring/summer season, I've pieced together some exciting patterns spotted on the runways of each major city from New York to Paris and Milan. I know, you're dying for a sneak peek. Think heavily lined lids, strong metallics, and a hefty dose of glitter. Keep scrolling for more, including a few products to re-create each look with.

To kick things off, let's start with New York's hottest trends. Lined lids were a huge hit. I'm not just talking lightly lined here—they were très dramatique this season. Normally, liner is reserved for the inner corners, outer corners, or along the lash line, right? Well, this time around, models were sporting eyeliner either in place of eye shadow or atop their shadow. It's definitely a unique take that's easy to re-create at home using a solid gel or pencil liner.

Chalky pastel colors also took center stage in New York as models sported rainbow hues on both the lids and even the entire face. It's definitely bold, but if you're wanting to add more of a grainy, chalky feel to your look, it's fully on-trend.

Sparkling facial embellishments were a hit, with everything from glitter brows to extra-large hair beads that form a crown. Facial piercings also made an appearance with extra-flashy nose rings front and center.

Facial embellishments were trending in both New York and London this time around. The runways in London, however, definitely took it to new heights with artistic crystals, bold, winged chin accessories, and decorated glasses.

I do a little dance every time disco-style makeup makes a comeback. Glittering accessories, sequin eye shadow looks, and of course, glitter was highly prominent on the London runways, too.

Instead of the chalky, sooty colorful looks we saw in New York, London models came fully adorned in radiantly bright shades on the face. Particularly, hot pink dominated the runway with both smoked-out eye looks and some with magenta-hued eye shadow darkened around the lids.

Paris took winged liner to a whole new level. From chunky black lids to thin, crisscross-style liner, there's a vibe for everyone. You can even do a colored liner for an extra pop of color.

Heavy metallic gold and silver eye makeup in Paris made for an adventurous and eye-catching look. Thick, gold eye paint makes a statement but you can also opt for a lighter, barely there silver shade just below the brow as seen on the models at Elie Saab.

This favorite trend of the bunch came out swinging in Milan. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a stardust type of look. Pair a shimmery shade with a touch of glitter around the eyes for a look of celestial wonder.

Brightly colored lips made a strong appearance in Milan as models sported every hue from pastel yellow to a two-toned raspberry look. I love the idea of pairing an electric color like purple with another shade like Barbie pink.

Spotted at Francesca Liberatore, Faun, Giorgio Armani

You can never go wrong with a bronze, smoky eye, and runway shows across Milan really leaned into this. It looks truly beautiful on all skin tones and can be dusted all over the lids and below the brows or placed on strategic points of the lids for a subtle glow.

When people think about fashion, they might not consider it serious, but this billion-dollar industry isn’t frivolous. In fact, the fashion industry accounts for 1.8 million jobs in the United States alone, making its economic, environmental, and social impact truly astronomical. The industry’s influence isn’t just setting this season’s trends; it’s more than that. Fashion reflects the value society places on women and labor. Despite the fact that fashion is predominantly female, with a workforce made up of 70% of women, women in the fashion industry hold less than 25% of leadership positions in top fashion companies. This discrepancy, of course, is a microcosm of the wider issue of gender equality in society.

Unless we begin to actually address the problem, nothing will change, so we spoke with four leaders who have agreed to be part of Tresemmé and Vital Voices' campaign Women Lead the Way. Tresemmé and designers such as Rebecca Minkoff, Cushnie, Jonathan Simkhai, Jason Wu, and Studio One Eighty Nine have pledged to use their work and their leadership to strive for gender equality in the fashion industry through mentoring, hiring, and promoting women into leadership positions. Because there’s no "just sticking to fashion” anymore. Not caring isn’t stylish. If we start to break the glass ceiling within the fashion industry, maybe it will catch on.

Carly Cushnie, Creative Director and CEO of Cushnie

You’ve agreed to be part of Tresemmé’s Women Lead the Way campaign. What compelled you to sign on to the pledge? And how will you be upholding this pledge?

As a female CEO and business owner in this industry, I feel committed to using my platform to support and foster female talent from the start of their careers and beyond. I’ve always felt that there was a drastic gap between the number of women working within the industry, and the number of women at the executive level and at the top of design houses, and the statistics really bring that truth to light. I am thrilled that Tresemmé is taking the initiative to push the conversation forward and promote change from the top down, and I look forward to upholding this pledge.

You recently were named one of the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s newest board members. What is your role on the board, and what do you hope to achieve as one of the board’s female leaders?

In 2013, I was nominated for the CFDA Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent, and I was surprised to learn that I was the first woman of color to be nominated in that category. Now, to be given a seat on the CFDA’s Board of Directors is truly an honor, as it gives me a platform to evoke change and to be a voice for young designers and women within the industry.

Your S/S 20 collection was inspired by the women who inspire you. Could you give us a little background as to why you wanted to highlight these women and what you hope the collection tells the world? 

This season, in lieu of a runway show, I wanted to focus on a narrative close to my heart. As a new mother myself, I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight and celebrate the incredible mothers that I admire: women who are not only amazing mothers but who are also at the top of their game and are just completely courageous and badass examples to women everywhere. I think this project celebrates the truth that women can be both successful mothers as well as successful in their work. No one path is the same, and I think that as women, it’s important to lift each other up and support one another.

When it comes to the conversation around women in leadership roles, there often can be a lack of comprehension and acknowledgment around the intersectional barriers that prohibit women of color from assuming roles in the fashion industry as well. How do you think we can combat this issue and make it so everyone has the opportunity to lead based on merit rather than nepotism or bias?

I talk about it a lot, but you have to make sure who you have at the table at every level of the organization doesn’t look like you and consistently strive for your executive team, your management team, layers within the company, all need a diverse set of people. It’s easier said than done. Just as most companies have to go out of their way to pull in more women in leadership, sometimes you have to go out of your way to find women of color and make sure they have a path within the organization. 

You recently established the Female Founder Collective. Can you tell us a little bit about why you found it necessary to start the network? 

Women have the power to change the world. From our purchasing decisions as consumers to the leadership and employment opportunities we offer as business owners, women are an incredible and undeniable force. More than 11.6 million firms are owned by women, which translates into 9 million jobs and $1.7 trillion in sales. Women reinvest income in their families and communities at higher rates than men.

As a mother, and a founder, what are your thoughts on the Family and Medical Leave Act? Obviously, it’s the law that companies honor employees’ rights to time off and not practice discriminatory hiring practices against pregnant women, but that’s not always the case, even in an industry made up of predominantly women. So how can founders and the fashion industry lead the way in combating and changing this issue? 

Henry Ford invented the modern workday of 9-to-5. But how do we as women begin to think about shifting this formula? I’m still trying to figure out. How do you have a company that can do its job but then also allow for women to be in leadership positions and still feel some sense of "balance”? I also think women need to be more vocal when they are discriminated against. I think more people need to speak up rather than taking the "this happened to me” approach. It’s like, no, I’m going to be the change I want to see, and becoming vocal about the things you want within your company because it’ll never change unless we all talk about it.

Abrima Erwiah, Co-Founder and President of Studio One Eighty Nine

You’ve agreed to be a part of Tresemmé’s Women Lead the Way campaign. What compelled you to sign on to the pledge? And how will you be upholding this pledge?

I believe in the power of women and the importance of creating more opportunities for women to enter the workplace and to thrive in the workplace. It is proven that the root-out of poverty and the wealth of nations are fueled by women. Women are the backbone of society. This should be reflected in the structure of an organization, particularly at the level of leadership. Organizations should create and hire leadership that are more representative of the multitude of backgrounds and cultures of the communities they serve. We signed the pledge because we wanted to lend our voice to this movement. 

One of the things that makes Studio One Eighty Nine special is that it partners with artisanal communities in Ghana, Africa, to create its sustainable products. What was the intention behind that? 

My now business partner, Rosario Dawson invited me on the most amazing trip in 2011 to the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the opening of the City of Joy. At the opening, we met women who had been the victim of rape and sexual violence. Despite their horrific experiences, the women built this City of Joy, where they could learn skills and re-learn skills as a way of taking control over their destiny and "turning their pay to power.” They would make small crafts, sell them to take proceeds, buy farmland, farm and use the produce to feed their children or sell the produce to take the money and send their children to school. It was a beautiful circle of sustainability, and it became clear to us what happens when you empower a woman. Motivated and inspired by the tenacious women and men we met in the DRC, we decided to write a plan to create a platform and a space to support the development of local artisans and the empowerment of women. We set our mission to use fashion as an agent of social change and launched in 2013. We believe that if the infrastructure can be developed and supply chains created, then the economic value can be created for communities that are bigger than a form of aid.

How do you think we can address the lack of female leaders in the industry? 

Companies need to provide access to opportunities to help support and propel women who are in the pipeline forward. We will work with pledge participants to provide women with access to the resources, training, and mentorship needed to drive them toward leadership opportunities and help ensure they can succeed there. 

What’s the single piece of advice you’d give to any woman in the fashion industry or beyond struggling to grow within her career? 

Find a mentor, build your network, and no matter your role, remember that your voice matters and should be heard. Confession: I was not always an avid thrifter. For a long time, I, like many other shoppers, was intimidated and turned off by the process of thrifting. It’s hard to find the motivation to sift through your local consignment store when Zara makes it so easy to see the latest collection drop. But there came a point where I looked at my closet and realized it was filled with disposable pieces I didn’t love, so I decided to change the way I shopped. My solution was to start buying quality secondhand pieces over fast-fashion buys. The transition wasn’t easy, but I can honestly say it’s been for the best. Read on to discover the unexpected benefits of thrift shopping and how it’s made me happier…

 You change your relationship to style.

I’m just going to say something you’re not supposed to say here… I used to think thrifting was gross. (Yes, I know I was a snob and a half.) But to be fair, thrifting was part of my childhood, so I found pleasure in shopping for items that were brand-new. There’s a level of reckoning with privilege when you’re reassessing how you shop; being able to choose between buying new clothing and going thrifting is a privilege in and of itself. And unfortunately society places value on having the latest styles over seeking out sustainable pieces. But for me, thrifting flipped that narrative: It taught me to not only love the hunt but to ditch the guilt around not being able to afford the trendiest bag. As it turns out, great style doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny.

You score pieces you wouldn’t find anywhere else.

Don’t @ me for the following statement: I’m over the way everyone seems to dress the same. While I love that Instagram has democratized fashion, it’s also made it that much easier to find yourself wearing the same bag as everyone else—and I’m not about that life. If you, too, find yourself wanting to stand out in a sea of style influencers, thrifting is for you. In general, wherever you choose to shop, I cannot stress enough how important it is to buy pieces that are worth the investment and represent your personal style. Bonus: If you choose to thrift, you may score a secondhand I Am Gia leather duster that is not only practical and unique, but can also be worn for years to come. (True story.)

The compliments come rolling in…

If you live for getting those "I love your outfit” compliments, it’s time you take thrifting seriously. I’ve never gotten more compliments in my life than when I started thrifting (my secondhand Rebecca Minkoff dress is a compliment magnet). There’s something magical about wearing something you love—you just glow in a different way.

You Save Money.

I was definitely sleeping on the consignment life—but I’m awake now. The majority of my designer pieces have been found digging through the trenches of a consignment store. But how do you know you’re saving money? I suggest doing some research on your favorite brands. I always try to find the original price of a piece (unless it’s true vintage) before purchasing it.

In addition to looking for the original retail value, I compare prices on consignment sites like LePrix, The Real Real, Versatile Collective, and eBay to get an idea of how much I’m saving, because some pieces are actually worth buying new. I also try to find pieces priced at 50% (or less) off the original price; this ratio won’t always apply to collectible pieces or a newer designer piece, but it can be a great way to keep track of your savings.

You adopt a new lifestyle.

Honestly, there’s no feeling that really rivals scoring a designer piece at a third of the price. Some of my best secondhand finds include my body-con YSL dress and my Cult Gaia ark bag. I'll admit, however, that it takes some work: I frequently spend my weekends knee-deep in the racks at consignment shops looking for my next gem.

If you don’t have the time or the patience, let me introduce you to… the internet. Sarcasm aside, thrifting has been made easier thanks to the wonders of Wi-Fi. Not only can you find some of the best online consignment stores and online vintage shops, but by using specific search terms, you can also set up notifications for the pieces you’re looking for. (In other words, that Fendi Baguette you’ve been eyeing will soon be yours.)

You’re saving the environment.

Of all the reasons to abstain from fast fashion, this is the most important. The fast-fashion industry produces over 15.1 million tons of textile waste every year. Because rather than donating or recycling unsold sale items, fast-fashion brands often burn or toss them, and the debris can end up in the ocean where the plastic microfibers are being consumed by fish and subsequently humans. Terrifying, right? But you don’t need to feel powerless; in addition to voting for politicians and policies that help ensure ethical and environmental practices, you can personally adopt sustainable shopping practices. Because in truth, that affordable fast-fashion piece costs a lot more than you think.

 You find unexpected joy.

There are so many reasons I love thrifting, but maybe the simplest one is the joy it has brought into my life. And while that may seem trivial, your wardrobe should make you look and feel your best, and if you do happen to find the pieces you love most at Goodwill, well, even better.

As reported by Vogue, world-renowned brand Burberry is "celebrating the LGBTQ+ community for Christopher Bailey’s last collection as creative director." Not only will the collection represent gay pride with its limited edition rainbow check, but Burberry has also announced its intentions to donate to charities that support the LGBTQ+ community and increase awareness of the challenges they may face.

While we love the aesthetic look of the rainbow incorporation into Burberry’s classic pattern, we love the idea behind the pieces even more. In reference to the collection, Bailey has said, "there has never been a more important time to say that in our diversity lies our strength, and our creativity," and we couldn’t agree more.

In fact, Burberry’s LGBTQ+ line is only one of many instances we’ve noticed lately, where designers are taking a stance on important social issues. At New York Fashion Week, we have seen a number of brands making statements about issues that need to be addressed, from diversity to sexual assault.

In the wake of the #MeToo campaign, Prabal Gurung’s show ended with models carrying white roses as a sign of support for the movement. Other designers also made statements through their designs. Take Tom Ford’s "pussy power" bags, for instance. Anything but subtle, these bags more than hint at female empowerment.

Similarly, we saw a number of shows which addressed the need for diversity in the fashion industry in their model lineups. Chromat led by example, featuring clothes on a range of diverse models unabashedly snacking on Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Not only did Chromat’s show feature models of varying ethnic backgrounds, but also included an amputee and a woman in a hijab. Similarly, Christian Siriano’s runway starred a number of celebrities of different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities. Nothing short of exquisite, Siriano’s show confirmed the value and beauty of diversity on the runway.

In the same vein, Rebecca Minkoff chose to skip fashion week altogether, instead focusing energy into an online profile showcasing female empowerment. The editorial, entitled RM Superwoman, is centred around women making a difference—with the clothes seeming less important than the females featured on the site. As InStyle reports, "The platform will not only highlight activists like the Women's March leaders, but it will also be a place for conversation and events that will hopefully inspire women to lead 'fearless' lives." We can’t help but think that perhaps this is a more useful allocation of money that would typically go into producing an extravagant runway show, and it leads us to wonder whether this is an indication of what the future of fashion will look like.

Regardless of whether or not fashion shows will continue to carry such importance, however, it’s refreshing to see that either way, there appears to be a acknowledgement from the fashion industry. Both on and off the runway, designers are speaking out against injustice and fighting for causes they believe in. Whether through collections like Burberry’s, or in diverse casting, we can only hope to see more of this sartorial activism take place.

Like Bailey stated, this is an important time in history, and that means that each of us should try to do our part. In an industry as visible as fashion, these issues can’t be ignored, and if designers continue to speak up, as some have been already, we can only imagine the positive ripple effect that can flow on into the wider community.

With January in full swing, I’m sure many of you have had some time to write out your resolutions (and begin accomplishing them, too). Speaking of resolutions, this year I’m making a promise to myself to add some more fun pieces to my wardrobe. I’ve done some research on 2016 fashion trends, and so far I love what I’m seeing. Let’s just say I’ll be adding quite a few of the items below to my shopping cart! From slip dresses to mixed metallics, here are the trends I’m predicting to be big in 2016… Happy shopping!

A slinky, silky slip dress is all you need to feel sexy. It’s as simple as that. I’ve been seeing this feminine silhouette pop up here and there lately, and I know it’s only going to get more and more popular as the year goes on. Invest in a classic black style, one with a pop of color, or a pretty gold metallic version.

Bell sleeve tops are fun to wear with shorts, pencil skirts, and your favorite pair of jeans. And they’re on the fashion forecast for 2016! I’m loving the red, white, and printed styles below. It’s all in the little details…

I love wearing metallics in any way, shape, or form. So when I saw that mixed metallics are in this year, I started pulling all of my shiny, shimmery pieces out of my closet to prepare. Rock this trend by combining hints of metallics in your shoes, bag, clothes, and even nail polish.

There’s nothing more ladylike than a dress or top that has pretty pleats. In my opinion, wearing a light and airy pleated piece feels special. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found out that pleated pieces are predicted to be big this year, especially in the spring. Capitalize on this trend by adding pretty dresses and lightweight tops to your wardrobe.

It seems that 2016 is taking a style cue from the ’70s! If you couldn’t get your flower child fix from the fringe and suede pieces I already have on this list, then this next trend is for you. The romantic, flowy maxi dress is a gorgeous silhouette, and it can be styled so many ways. I love each of the styles below paired with some heeled booties and a crossbody bag for a breezy look.

The allure of the simplest dress silhouette returned again on the runways of Jil Sander, Nina Ricci, and Céline. This season’s iterations offer a fresh spin on the ’90s-era staple. Wear it while it’s still warm for an evening out, and then layer it over slim trousers and a tissue-thin turtleneck come colder weather.

You may know Rebecca Minkoff more for her beloved handbags than her music career, but that’s all about to change, as the NY-based designer will be making her debut performance as DJ BECKY at The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.

The designer-turned-DJ said of her upcoming performance, “I’ve always loved music; it’s definitely a pillar of the brand. There are just certain pieces that Manhattan girls can't seem to get enough of, and they're not all as edgy as you might expect! Not only can it become physically beat-up when it’s on the floor—dirty, kicked, exposed to the elements—but from a metaphysical standpoint, it illustrates that you don’t really show proper care toward your bag. If you’re willing to put it on any dirty ol’ floor, what else are you willing to expose it to?

In closing: Keeping your bag literally and figuratively elevated helps ensure that it will stick around for the long haul and be by your side for years to come.
