Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I saw more than my fair share of rainy days. In fact, Pittsburgh has more rainy days per year than Seattle, so when it comes to dressing for inclement weather, I'm pretty much a pro. They're the perfect boot when you want to add a bit of edge to a low-key outfit. I love the idea of styling these waterproof suede boots with apparel in another technical fabric like nylon. The emerald-green utility pants and bright-purple, rain-resistant bomber jacket really pop against the tan boots for a cool, off-duty look.

Classic, flat Chelsea boots made a major comeback last fall, but this year, it's all about styles with a short heel. These ankle boots are arguably the easiest footwear trend to style, whether it's with denim, a sweaterdress, or a miniskirt like you see here. The pleated skirt, argyle sweater-vest, button-down, and exposed socks tap into the school-girl trend that's having a moment right now, but the heeled Chelsea boots make it all feel a bit more polished (read: less "high school uniform").

Lug-sole boots are a fashion-editor favorite, and I can't get enough of them. Sorel makes the coolest version with a block heel, which adds an elevated touch to the otherwise casual footwear style. But the best part is that the boots are two-tone, which makes the lug sole really stand out. I like the idea of leaning into this color-blocking effect with your outfit by wearing a top and bottom in the same colors as the boots. This black and pink combo is giving "'80s rocker chick," and I'm here for it.

The last boot trend that's worth the investment this season is actually half boot, half sneaker. This unique hybrid style is both sporty and comfortable, and I'm favoring this one from Sorel because of the super-convenient pull-on style (no laces in sight!). While this sneaker-boot is a no-brainer with athleisure looks, I also recommend experimenting with outfits that are equal parts sporty and polished. Take this 'fit, for example: The shoes are paired with stretchy, split-hem pants (sporty) and an oversize blazer (polished).

THE DESIGN PROCESS

After we decided to kick off our partnership with a pair of boots, we went straight to the Sperry archive and current catalog for inspiration. I have memories of my stylish mother wearing Sperry duck boots growing up, so I was immediately drawn to the idea of incorporating the waterproof shell into the design. Sperry’s Duck Float style caught my eye, and I thought the more rugged, practical base would be the perfect partner to a sleek leather "city-boot style” shaft. I aimed for a study in compatible contrasts, as I find some of the best design moments balance two different aesthetics for a nuanced, visually interesting effect.

Then it was on to the details! I love contrast stitching because it lends a bit of edge and highlights the lines of a design. An embossed logo on the heel became our subtle branding moment, and we went for classic color choices of black and a rich caramel brown to ensure you get the most wear out of your investment. On a practical note, the rubber sole has traction pods to help stay upright in slippery weather. Overall, the boots are a chic blend of form and function.

OUTFIT IDEAS

I've found myself in both scenarios before and can confirm they are far from fun. (Please learn from my mistakes, friends.) Duck boots are the OG of rainy-day footwear, so I was excited to see that Josie Francis chose this multi-color pair. Francis says the boots' olive and black colors inspired the earth tones in the rest of her outfit. (Side note: how good is that puffer vest?) "I'd probably wear this outfit to run errands or grab an afternoon coffee," she says.

What you might not notice at first glance is that these boots have a special sole created with enhanced traction as well as nylon water-resistant fabric. Plus, quilted fabrics in general are really having a moment right now. There's really no better choice for a rainy day, especially a cold one.

Taylor Swift proclaimed her love for Brits in her song "London Boy," so I'm not really surprised that she's started to dress like one. Photographed on a masked walk near London, Swift and her boyfriend Joe Alwyn went matching in Hunter Wellington Boots, which are iconic waterproof shoes that are a true staple in England.

For a Brit's take on the icon status of the boots, I tapped our Who What Wear UK editor in chief Hannah Almassi. "The reason wellies are so synonymous with British style is that we really need them!" she told me. Next, Dua Lipa wore a G-string dress that's so good it's almost unreal. 

Maybe it's because my mom's British, but I love the rain. Everything about it, from the smell of the first drops on cement to the beautiful post-shower skies, makes me feel so happy. Why I live in one of the driest cities in the United States is, honestly, beyond me. Once fall hits, I spend more time than I care to admit fawning over all the full-on fall looks I see in places with frequent rainfall. Wellies with oversize jackets; Chelsea boots with knit dresses; knee-highs with big sweaters; even lug-sole boots with a simple denim outfit get me feeling envious. Layering tops under dresses in fall and winter is such a classic move—one that looks even more stylish with the knit dresses I'm seeing on every fashion girl these days. Rain boots are a summer, fall, winter, and springtime essential. But they aren't always the easiest boots to find nor slip into when you have wider calves (and those who fall into this category know just how hard it can be to find mid-to-tall shoes that actually fit comfortably over the bottom half of one's legs).

According to Nordstrom's boot guide, "wide calves" have a circumference that lands at or above 15.5 inches. Curious how to measure your calves?
