Actress Caitriona Balfe’s path to stardom hasn’t exactly been what you’d call traditional. While packing bags for a local charity in her native Ireland, she was scouted by a modeling agent and then made her way to Paris at 19, where she began a modeling career that touched all the major fashion houses. Balfe continued to work in New York City for nearly eight years, but after deciding that modeling wasn’t her true passion, she eventually landed in L.A. to pursue her lifelong dream of acting on-screen.

Fast-forward to 2013 when Starz was casting the coveted role of Claire Fraser for the highly anticipated adaptation of the Outlander series and Balfe was called in after a second look at her audition tape. Thanks to her chemistry test with co-star Sam Heughan, she won the role right before shooting began, which required her to uproot her life in L.A. and move to Scotland. (Well, we did say it wasn’t the most traditional path.)

This November, she’ll be starring alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the upcoming movie, Ford v Ferrari, where she plays Bale’s wife, Mollie, who is an accomplished race car driver in her own right. It’s safe to say her career is about to shift into fifth gear.

Here's the thing about politics: It's all one big performance. So, it's hard to believe that it took until 2019 for someone to create a captivating show that focuses so sharply on the behind-the-scenes machinations of creating a candidate in the modern era. Enter The Politician, the latest collaboration between Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Brad Falchuk (better known as the creators of Glee), which has been captivating viewers since it dropped on Netflix last week.

Where did summer go? It's already the end of July, which means that if we blink too slowly, fall will be here before we know it. "Some people's feet are flatter than others," says Eric W. Tan, MD, assistant professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at the USC Keck School of Medicine. "If someone has a flatter arch, we typically like to support it to give a little more stability." It’s been nearly a month since Coachella announced the lineup for its annual spectacle-filled Instagram-worthy weekends, which means that music festival season is just around the corner. While Coachella has become one of the biggest events of the summer, featuring headliners Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem, not everyone has the funds to account for tickets, housing, and transportation—especially if you don’t live in the Southern California area.

Sasquatch!

Quincy, WA (May 25–27)

Feeling up for the Pacific Northwest? The Sasquatch! Festival will be sure to have major acts in its soon-to-be-released lineup, as well as some lesser-known artists you’ll be glad to discover. Last year’s lineup included big names including Frank Ocean, Chance the Rapper, and The Shins.

Governors Ball

New York, NY (June 1–3)

Why fly across the country for Coachella when you have Governors Ball right in New York City? The city music festival has become increasingly popular, with this year’s headliners including Jack White, Eminem and Travis Scott. New Yorkers won’t have to travel far when enjoying the music right in Randall’s Island Park.

Bonnaroo

Manchester, TN (June 7–10)

The music festival of the south is one of the biggest summer festivals in the country, and while its lineup often rivals that its Californian counterpart, you’ll find an entirely different environment at Bonaroo. Festivalgoers won’t be disappointed to see Future, Muse, and Bon Iver there along with Jack White and Eminem, who are also headlining at Coachella and Governors Ball. 

Lollapalooza

Chicago, IL (August 2–5)

The largest music festival in the Midwest, Lollapalooza takes place right in the heart of Chicago at Grant Park. The weekend has become so popular, the event increased from three to four days to fit in all your concert needs. Though its lineup has yet to be released, past headliners include Chance the Rapper, Lorde, and Arcade Fire.

Outside Lands

San Francisco, CA (August 10–12)

If you’re looking to get a mix of the Pacific Northwest with California, Outside Lands is the music festival for you. Considering past performers like The Who, The Gorillaz, and Alt-J, who wouldn’t want to be there? Set right in Golden Gate Park, you can listen to music while the Bay Area fog rolls in.

We all know the feeling: You walk out the door for a day on the go, only to find 20 minutes later that your choice of footwear just isn't going to cut it in the comfort department. Unfortunately, the pain and blisters aren't the only downsides to wearing uncomfortable shoes—there's the chance they could cause more long-lasting damage to your feet. To help you prevent this, we reached out to an expert to find out which shoes are the worst for foot health.

Frankly, we expected high heels to top the list, but podiatrist Robert Khorramian, MD provided a surprising response to our question. The worst offender? Ballet flats. Dr. Khorramian pointed out that with women's busy schedules, unstructured flats don't offer enough support. He noted that walking for long periods of time in ballet flats "causes metatarsalgia neuroma and plantar fasciitis," and also "destroys the fatty tissue underneath the feet," resulting in the ever so dreaded corns and calluses.

While Dr. Khorramian named ballet flats as the most common shoes to cause foot-related issues, he explained that other unsupportive or painful styles are also worth avoiding. "Flip-flops can cause a lot of injuries," he stated. "Pointy shoes can also cause corns and blisters because of the lack of circulation to the toes."

Some of the most unsupportive shoes for your feet include classic ballet flats, flip-flops, pointed shoes, and precarious heels. So what are the best ways to protect your feet? "Always buy shoes that are cushiony underneath the soles of the feet and have enough toe room," said Khorramian. And if you are planning to wear shoes with little support or high heels, he recommends carrying a larger bag where you can easily swap to comfortable shoes. "If you must wear heels, avoid wearing them while you’re driving, for long periods of time, and while walking."

Simply Chic is at the top of my list to visit as it's so close to home and is beautifully maintained and organized for a vintage shop. You'll find treasures in the form of Cartier, Hermès, Tiffany's, vintage Gucci, Chanel, Celine, YSL, and more. I personally love checking out the bags and Hermès scarves. At Simply Chic, there's less digging and more debating on what to buy.

Wallflower | Mission District

I popped in recently and found myself in vintage jean heaven! The shop is quaint, cozy, and full of character. Here you'll find a curation of amazing denim, vintage tees, and accessories with a nod to the '60s and '70s.

Wasteland | Haight

This was the first vintage shop I bookmarked when I moved here eight years ago, and it's still a favorite. The shop is huge and packed to the brim with great vintage denim, tees, cocktail dresses, and accessories. I have scored a handful of awesome basic tees by Vince and Rag & Bone and found a perfect pair of Levi's.

No | Mission District

I love this place for its thoughtful curation. It's refreshingly small and organized so not overwhelming. I love that it feels highly curated, so it's much easier to find a few treasures to bring home. I love the vintage jewelry and always end up buying a couple of fun silk pieces and denim.

If you've ever spent a night wobbling around in a pair of high heels that caused major cramping, you're not alone—we've been there too. Whether it be from walking, standing, or even just sliding them on, it can often seem like high heels are an ongoing source of pain and misery. 

But, not all heels are created equal, and as chunkier heel styles have risen in popularity, we've begun to wonder what are the best type of heels to wear? While our team suspected that a block heel is superior to a stiletto, we needed experts to weigh in once and for all. Are chunkier heels actually better for your health?

We talked to DPM and footwear designer Dr. Joan Oloff along with Dr. Jackie Sutera, a podiatrist and Vionic innovation lab member. Together they broke down the science behind painful heels and offered tips for surviving a night in a painful pair.

When We Experience Pain While Wearing Heels, What Is Happening?

First things first, we asked the doctors to explain exactly what causes discomfort. "Most heels are produced on an insole construction that pushes the center of gravity forward." Notes Dr. Oloff. By moving the bulk of your weight to the ball of your foot, it can cause pain and inflammation in your feet as well as in your leg muscles and joints. 

Is a Chunky Heel Actually Better for Your Foot?

Both doctors agree that a chunkier heel offers better stability, ultimately offering more support. [A] chunky heel is better for your foot than a stiletto because it has a greater surface area to distribute your body weight across," Dr. Sutera says. "It is also more stable for people who are prone to ankle sprains and have balance issues."

And If the Pain Persists?

As careful as we may be to choose comfortable shoes, the bottom line is that sometimes a great pair of shoes just hurt. Dr. Oloff suggests icing the ball of the foot, or looking into cushions, which "provide a softer surface, but don’t aid in offloading the pressure." Dr Sutera adds that limiting the amount of time standing or walking in heels helps as well.

"The back yoke in a pair of jeans is essential in determining the fit of the jeans and how flattering they are on your bum," she notes.

While there is a range of shapes, some more relaxed, others that emphasize your assets, according to Paige, one style reigns supreme: "The most flattering yoke detail is the classic soft V-shape," she notes.
