There is one place in particular that I always recommend for a winter closet refresh: Gap. Every year, I notice the same gap in my closet: cold-weather clothing. Last year, I started to fix that with a Filippa Hägg wool coat, thermal tights, and insulated boots.

This year, I'm continuing the same goal, focusing on scarves, bonnets, alpaca-fur hats, warm layers, cashmere, and more outerwear. Beyond my wool coat, I want variety. Nikki's review: I've never been a fan of puffer jackets; it's because I've never found one that I think is actually stylish. Every winter, though, my friends talk about their Aritzia puffer jackets and how they're a godsend, especially in January and February, when it's the coldest in NYC. I usually just listen and let their words go in one ear and out the other, thinking to myself that I'll stick to my sophisticated long wool coats. However, a month ago, I heard that this winter in NYC might be the coldest in a while, which made me nervous and prompted frantic research for the warmest winter jackets with a stylish appeal. Quickly, I found myself on the Aritzia SuperPuff landing page exploring different options and fell in love with The Super Après Puff.

This jacket is the shortest version of all the puffers, so I'm not saying it will keep my lower half warm, but it will where it matters most—my upper body—and it definitely looks refined and suitable for someone who cares a little too much about their appearance and dressing. The mock neck collar, which, when buttoned all the way, creates a chic funnel-neck silhouette, and the matte fabric gives it a sleek look. Other features I love are the fleece-lined pockets, which keep my hands warm when I forget my gloves, and the attached cuffs with thumbholes, which add extra warmth. It's not winter yet in New York, but I've already worn this jacket on some 40-degree mornings, and it’s been lifesaving. It's safe to say this jacket is about to become my best friend.

Aritzia Super Puff Mid in Black

Ana's review: I may or may not be biased, but as a native Floridian, one of the best winter items I own is an Aritzia Super Puff. I promptly bought the Aritzia Super Puff Long jacket a few years ago and, since moving to New York and wearing it nearly every single day in the winter to walk, it's gotten some wear and tear (and, quite a few holes and stains since it's a lighter color.) As such, I was excited to test and try out the Artizia Super Puff Mid first-hand.

Since I'm on the taller side, I wanted to find a jacket that extended a bit past my hips without making me feel like I'm wearing a marshmallow-filled blanket, which the extra padded Super Puff Long silhouette does for me already. I made the trek down to SoHo to try on the Mid style just so I could get the length just perfect and it hit right at the middle of my thighs. Plus, like with all Aritzia Super Puffs, I'm able to wear it simply with my favorite white t-shirt and jeans—the down filling on this jacket means it keeps me quiet toasty without having to layer much.

If you have an apple-shaped body or a larger chest like I do, you might find sizing up to be better for you—I took the Aritzia Super Puff Mid in my true size (around a size 16/18), but felt it ever so slightly tight around my midsection. Most of the classic Super Puff silhouettes, including the Mid, come up to a size 2XL, which means they're plus-size friendly!

Aniyah's review: I moved from FL to NYC for four years and I can’t believe I spent all this time without a SuperPuff. Everyone raves about how warm it is and how long it lasts. My fellow editor Natalie Gray Herder has had hers for six years and it’s held up so nicely. My first instinct was to get a classic black puffer for the sake of matching my rather neutral winter uniform, but I decided to shake it up a bit and opt for this baby pink cropped puffer.

This could make even the most casual look feel more whimsical and fun, and I think we need a little bit of that every now and then during the dark and dreary months. Sierra's review: For a while I was a tailored coat girl, but to say that kept me warm enough would be a lie. In my hunt for the perfect puffer coat that's actually warm I asked a few friends and fashion experts and they both pointed me in the direction of Aritzia's Super Puff. Since trying it, it's been an absolute must for me. Especially on days where I know I'll be outside a lot (commuting through Manhattan in the winter is no joke) or it's just too cold to wear anything else. When Canadians come up with a solution to cold-weather you listen and that's exactly what I've done with my love for the Super Puff.

A big concern of mine in the winter is keeping warm without turning into a walking marshmallow, which is exactly why I fell in love with this line of coats in the first place—especially this one. While my first love in the Super Puff collection was a cropped puffer, the perfect entry to warmer dressing—I'm going all in this winter by choosing a longer option. There's no need for the bottom half of your body to be cold when you own a coat like this. The gold zipper against the black feels so luxe and it instantly makes heels and a nice dress feel like the obvious move when I’m styling it although it also has the ability to dress up my favorite baggy pants and sweater combination that I thrive in come winter. Expect to see me in this a lot.

Kerane's review: For the past few years of living in NYC, I have somehow managed to never be fully prepared for the winter. Every year, I shiver under an okay wool coat with a sweater underneath. Or I’m wearing way too many layers underneath a puffer that just isn’t warm enough. And this winter is not going to be an easy one to withstand. So, I decided to try a SuperPuff from Aritzia. All my stylish friends have one, and I never thought to try it until now.

It girl Sabrina Carpenter has been booked and busy this holiday season, and for celebs, that means a significant amount of time is probably being spent in NYC. Obviously, New York City is significantly chillier in the winter than Los Angeles, Carpenter's place of residence. That said, she wore the perfect outfit for a recent day out in NYC.

It's cold in NYC, and I mean proper cold. Gloves have been located, new Heattech thermal layers have been purchased, and giant turtlenecks have been dug out of winter storage (the joy of having a New York–sized closet). Naturally, puffer jackets are officially back on rotation.

The promotional tour in NYC this week for the new film Anyone But You was a Sydney Sweeney fashion show, start to finish. She and stylist Molly Dickson came up with more than a dozen incredible looks for Sweeney's press appearances, but it's her legging outfit to fly from NYC to LAX yesterday that has my attention at the moment. 

I always like to see how celebrities style leggings years after they became "trendy". Sweeney, for one, opted to pair her black leggings for the flight with a designer It item: Prada's cropped puffer. Prada and Miu Miu puffer jackets are as covetable as puffer jackets get, and if I were to spend over $2k on a puffer, I'd definitely choose one of these. Sweeney completed the trendy travel outfit with a pair of white crew socks and white sneakers.

I feel like this is a safe place to admit I've never owned a puffer jacket. Considering I live in the UK, where it's cold for more months than it is remotely warm, this seems crazy, right? There's a few reasons why I've swerved puffers year after year (even though I'm perpetually cold). The first reason being I've found a lot of them, well, ugly. And the second main reason being every time I've tried them on they seem to swamp my 5'4" frame. The thing is, though, with more and more brands creating iterations, there are so many more lengths in puffer, quilted or padded styles to choose from. So this year, I've decided it's time to invest in a coat that'll makes me feel like I'm swaddled up in my much-loved duvet. Don't get me wrong, summer is lovely and all, and autumn threw out some excellent trends, but honestly, I always find myself counting down to winter for one reason: It's officially coat season. They say that the only things that are certain in life are death and taxes, but I know of another one: That Emily Ratajkowksi will be photographed wearing a variety of The North Face puffers around New York City once the temp hits 50 degrees. She's not even in the brand's ads—she just genuinely seems to love these jackets and has been wearing them year after year (in a variety of colors, I might add) since she moved to New York several years ago.

From where I stand, it seems that Ratajkowski is one of the big reasons The North Face puffers sell out every winter, like clockwork. She's certainly contributed to its cool factor, and trendy retailers like Shopbop, Revolve, and Urban Outfitters stock them now. Given that EmRata just busted out one of her first puffers of the season (see below), you can expect a swift sell-out to follow across the internet. Unlike Cannes, Sundance Film Festival is fairly tame when it comes to dressing. Oftentimes, the weather (aka heavy amounts of snow) in Park City hinders attendees from prioritizing bold looks rather than utility, and understandably so. That being said, it appears that Anne Hathaway, whose film Eileen premiered at the festival on Saturday, didn't get the memo, and honestly, we couldn't be more thrilled about it. 

For the premiere, Hathaway and her stylist, Erin Walsh, plucked a puffer jacket with a bustier-like bodice off of Versace's F/W 22 runway and paired it with tights and sky-high platforms, essentially combining the practicality necessary for a winter weekend in Park City with high fashion. The look comes after a bevy of other celebrities were spotted also skipping pants in favor of outerwear or knitwear paired with sheer tights, including Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Sophie Turner, and more. After posing on the carpet in her puffer-and-tights ensemble, Hathaway eventually removed her outerwear to showcase a tweed minidress also by Versace. But without a doubt, the pre-dress-reveal look was what stole the show—or, better yet, the weekend.

No one will debate that a black coat is essential. It's a major building block of a well-thought-out wardrobe and is undeniably timeless, and almost any editor worth their weight in Manolo Blahniks will advise owning at least two. But there definitely is a limit. Just like how the same desk salad becomes lackluster after a few months, wearing a black coat 24/7 also loses its flair. That's where a more vibrant alternative comes in. 

High-impact color has made its rounds as a major trend over the past few seasons, and it isn't letting up within the coat arena either. After Pete Davidson escorted Kim Kardashian to the Met Gala dressed as President John F. Kennedy, I was convinced that nothing he could do would shock me. Then I heard rumors about him and Emily Ratajkowski, and shocked I most certainly was. Not that I'm mad about it. Actually, in the photos that just surfaced of the model-comedian duo courtside at Madison Square Garden for a New York Knicks game this weekend, they looked good together. Like, really good.

If there’s one thing we can rely on it is that Hailey Bieber will always be right on trend. Over the past few weeks, the Who What Wear team has noticed a particular trainer is popping up on our fashionable friends and celebrities alike, and of course Hailey is all over it. Enter Adidas' Samba, a flat silhouette which was designed primarily as a football shoe. Since being spotted on the likes of Bella Hadid and Lila Moss, the shoe has taken off, but Hailey’s pairing of the Adidas Samba and baggy jeans is one of the best combinations we’ve seen this season.

But it isn't just a shoe trend that Hailey got so right this week. In one fail swoop she's also nailed the puddle pant trend, opting to pair her Sambas with baggy, loose jeans that fall over the shoe and right to the floor. In true style icon fashion, Hailey's look pushes puddle pants to a whole new level, and pairing them with Sambas is a winning combination. Plus, at a reasonable £75, these trainers are one of the more affordable trends that the fashion set is currently embracing. The hard part is getting your hands on them. Much like that Mango jacket, or the COS crossbody bag, this is set to be another set-stock-alerts style. While the most notable moments in fashion history for me take place on the runways, I'll never forget the day that the Super Puff dropped. Aritzia already had been known for crafting wardrobe staples that last a lifetime at great prices, so everyone I knew was already spending their weekends there finding new pieces that felt ultra-luxe but didn't break the bank. Kendall Jenner was at the peak of her career when she starred in the brand's first campaign in 2017, making everyone flock to Aritzia to try Jenner's new favorite coats for themselves.

Since then, Aritzia has worn the puffer coat as if it invented it. Fans on TikTok have given winter a new name, calling it "Super Puff season" as they prematurely dawn their coats in October for a Starbucks run. The coat is a fashionable take on the once solely practical wardrobe staple, and if it's warm enough to survive Canadian winters, it certainly passes my test.
