The printed dress—and more specifically, the floral printed dress. Not the polite, monochrome kind that sits in the background but instead the kind of dress that captures a room's attention before you do.

After seasons dominated by oatmeal tailoring, whisper-thin knits, and the sort of pieces that telegraph taste through restraint, this season's runways felt louder and more intentional. Designers seemed less interested in proving they could do “quiet luxury” and more invested in showing that personality still matters. If show notes placed on runway seats this season are any indication, New York Fashion Week's finest are making clothes for the working woman—and she loves a printed maxi dress she can actually wear.

Proenza Schouler leaned into pattern with the brand's signature urban sensibility intact. The dresses moved, they caught the light with fringe and grommets, all disrupting the neutral monotony we’ve grown accustomed to. The show marks the debut of Jamaican-born designer Rachel Scott at the helm of the label. Her message was clear: Print doesn’t cancel sophistication—it amplifies it.

Similar abstract prints, both floral and not, were seen at Altuzarra, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Anna Sui, and PatBo. Even Khaite, often the poster child for a restrained, cool, monochrome New York chicness, partook in the printed fun in its own way, adapting a black, yellow, and red floral print into a bateau-neck midi dress complete with an ivory ruffled hem and matching gloves. When a label synonymous with sleek restraint embraces floral motifs, you pay attention.

What makes this moment significant isn’t that florals appeared—they always do. It’s that they felt like a rebuttal. After years of algorithm-friendly beige and “if you know, you know” dressing, the printed dress reads as fashion reclaiming its right to be seen. There’s something almost rebellious about choosing a pattern when the cultural mood has rewarded understatement.

In many ways, the rise of the floral printed dress signals a broader recalibration. We’re moving away from clothes that whisper status and toward pieces that communicate identity. The anti–quiet luxury dress isn’t about opulence for opulence's sake. It's about personality and expression. And maybe (just maybe!) it's about having a bit of fun again.

A flurry of newly appointed creative directors has upended fashion's status quo in recent months, but don't be distracted. Today belongs to Rachel Scott. On February 11, she staged her first Proenza Schouler runway show since taking the helm of the brand founded in 2002 by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez (who, in turn, skedaddled over to Loewe last spring). She continues to design for her own label, Diotima, which is also on the NYFW calendar.

In front of an audience that included Olivia Munn, Jemima Kirke, and Hari Nef, Scott presented her vision of "a new Proenza Schouler woman, a woman shaped by thought, intuition, contradiction," according to the show notes. "To the unknowing eye, she is put-together, precise, deathly punctual. Those who recognize her sense that there is more to her: The Proenza Schouler woman for fall 2026 rejects perfection as constraint. She is composed yet mysterious and cinematic. The First Women's Collection by Rachel Scott

Scott is embracing the artfully askew for fall/winter 2026. Models walked down the runway wearing smudged lipstick and rumpled dresses that looked like they could have been fetched out of the hamper 10 minutes before showtime. The woman Scott had in mind "was in a rush … moving quickly and with purpose," as the press release explained. Other off-kilter details included irregular buttons and unconventional tucks.

The Next Step

In the show notes, Proenza Schouler explained that this season's "footwear explores distortion: grounded pumps with exaggerated square toes, sharply elongated pointed kitten heels, satin sandals with shearling footbeds. Ruptured fringe carries the collection's sense of controlled friction into footwear."

It's All in the Details

Scott's collection balanced big, conceptual themes with pocket-sized particulars best viewed up close. The grommets, which "interrupt precision" according to the show notes, were definitely worth zooming in on—as were the prominent buttons and fringed edges.

The It-Bag Contenders

Proenza Schouler is no stranger to the It bag. Over the last two decades, several styles earned hall-of-fame status, a reputation that Scott likely wants to maintain. "Bags revisit familiar silhouettes—such as the archival Hex bag, a clutch, and a bowler bag—through mixed materials, combining calf hair, cashmere suede, French calf, and kidskin."

Manus et Machina

When I read the show notes, a Latin phrase came to mind: manus et machina. Meaning "hand and machine," it was the theme of the 2016 Met Gala, which explored the intersection between handicrafts and technology in fashion design. In 2026, Scott's take on this concept involved "photographic imagery of night orchids [that were] manipulated and reworked, retaining film-like borders, traces of process left visible—placing digital precision alongside the hand, reflecting an approach to craft that respects tradition and embraces modernity."

The unofficial start of fall is here, bringing a sense of freshness and change. As we enter the season, it's also the beginning of a new chapter for Proenza Schouler. Today, the New York–based brand announced the appointment of Diotima's founder, Rachel Scott, as its creative director.

Scott is replacing Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, who both founded Proenza Schouler in 2002, but left in April to become the new creative directors of Loewe. In a press release, Hernandez and McCollough had nothing but favorable remarks for Scott: "Rachel is someone whose work we have always admired," they said in a statement. "Her trajectory over the last few years has been impressive to watch. As founders and board members of the company, we are proud to welcome her to this very special brand and excited to see how she will embrace and evolve the legacy and spirit of what we started."

The fashion world is also eager to see her next move at the American House, especially given her artisanal background and the time she has already spent at Proenza Schouler as a consultant. "As one of the most celebrated design talents of today, Rachel brings a fresh and female perspective to a brand built on the spirit of the modern American woman," Shira Suveyke Snyder, CEO of Proenza Schouler, said in a press release. "Her profound understanding of Proenza Schouler's brand codes, paired with her exceptional ability to marry craft with innovation, made her the natural choice to lead the brand forward."

1. She Is the Founder and Creative Director at Diotima

In 2021, Scott founded her own label, Diotima, serving as its creative director. Over the past four years, the brand has gained recognition for its unique artisanship and culturally inspired craftsmanship. Its designs feature fabrics such as crochet, mesh, and linen, reflecting Scott's Jamaican heritage, while mixing these with tailored silhouettes to create pieces that feel current. While Scott is heading to Proenza Schouler, she will continue to serve as the creative director of her brand.

2. She Held Positions at Other Notable Fashion Brands

Scott's experience extends beyond Diotima. Her career originally started at J.Mendel, then she moved to Elizabeth and James, the brand founded by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, where she was a designer. From 2021 to 2022, she served as vice president of design at Rachel Comey, overseeing footwear and ready-to-wear, before leaving to start her own label.

3. She Has Won Many Prestigious Awards

Since Diotima was founded in 2021, Scott has won four major awards. Her first was the CFDA Emerging Designer of the Year award in 2023, followed by the CFDA American Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2024, and the CFDA x Frazier Family Foundation Empowered Vision Award in 2025. In April, she received the Fashion Trust U.S. Ready-to-Wear Award. Her recognition within the industry makes her not just the right choice for Proenza Schouler but also the right leader to shape the future of American fashion.

4. She Is the Only Woman of Color to Lead a Major Fashion House Right Now

Over the past few months, significant changes have occurred in the fashion world regarding creative directors. For example, Pierpaolo Piccioli became the creative director at Balenciaga after Demna left to lead Gucci, and Jonathan Anderson was named the creative director of Dior after he departed from Loewe. That said, what makes Scott's appointment at Proenza Schouler stand out is the importance of her role, as she has become the only woman of color to lead a fashion house this season, marking a milestone for the industry.

Last year around this time, a hyper-specific shoe trend was reaching peak It status. Yes, I'm talking about fishnet flats, a style that everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Rihanna to Anne Hathaway owned and wore on repeat. The fact is they were everywhere. However, as summer 2025 enters the chat, fishnet flats aren't quite as prevalent as they were roughly 365 days ago. In that absence, another, albeit similar, shoe trend staged a coup, and Sofia Richie Grainge is already fully on board.

On Sofia Richie Grainge: Proenza Schouler Tee Leather Mesh Slingback Pumps ($850)

Over the weekend, Richie Grainge and her husband, Elliot Grainge, were spotted leaving dinner at Cipriani in Beverly Hills, where the 26-year-old debuted the shoe trend that's gearing up to take control of fishnet flats' throne. The style in question? Fishnet heels. Specifically, Richie Grainge chose a red pair of Proenza Schouler's net slingback heels from the brand's resort 2025 collection, which she styled elegantly with black flowy pants, a white tee, and a black duster coat. She finished off the look with an east-west clutch, gold jewelry, and tiny sunglasses.

Richie Grainge's exact fishnet heels are actually made of leather and feature a rounded toe and sculptural heel. Called the Tee pumps, the style also comes in white and black. Though, red has certainly been the brand's most popular colorway, with it selling out almost everywhere. (A few sizes remain, but you'll have better luck scoring a pair in black or white.) And if her Proenza Schouler pair isn't the fishnet heel for you, don't fret. We've officially passed the halfway point of 2025, and I must confess, I have been influenced. I like to think ahead, especially about clothes, so earlier this year, when the opportunity came around to get the gears turning about my style and the way it would adapt in the forthcoming 365 days, I grabbed it. And so did my co-workers. (We often think alike in this way.) After looking through thousands of individual spring 2025 runway looks during fashion month, like me, we were well underway with our 2025 fashion preparations.

Though we think alike, we don't all dress alike, so we tend to fall in love with different collections, as well as brands. Some of us are more minimalist, primarily sticking to neutral colors and classic silhouettes, while others take a more maximalist approach, testing out louder shades and patterns every chance they get. The one thing we all share, though, is great taste. With that in mind, I sought out my team's help in determining which of the big fashion brands have influenced them the most in 2025 so far, having each of my co-workers share their top one or two labels and how the S/S 25 collections and beyond have shaped their wardrobes. "I want my entire 2025 aesthetic to reference Saint Laurent's S/S 25 collection, my favorite moment from Paris Fashion Week. I can't stop thinking about the modern tailoring, complete with ties tucked into trousers, oversize eyeglasses, and dreamy outerwear on top—nods to Yves Saint Laurent himself. "For me, the beauty of the Toteme S/S 25 collection was all in the finer details. I know it's a spring collection, but the color palette and strong use of suede and leather are things I'd like to start incorporating into my wardrobe starting this fall. A big part of my personal style is items that are comfortable and edgy, so I love that Tory took a lot of traditional sporting garments and gave them a fashionable twist. Only Tory Burch could create track pants crafted out of suede and no one would bat an eye—the vision is always clear. "True style (at least for me) is having the ability to transform the most 'mundane' staples or even silhouettes into something that feels signature to them—Gucci's spring collection was a masterclass in that principle. I've been a massive fan of Sabato De Sarno's creative direction at Gucci thus far because I love how he's reinvented some of the house's codes. Of course, the S/S 25 collection still had some maximalist-leaning moments—e.g., archival horse-bit prints were used to create these cropped car coats with matching voluminous skirts—but overall, the tone was far more casual. However, that didn't mean it lacked glamour. What made this collection magical to me was how many of the runway looks seemed minimal on the surface, but they were dripping with personality upon closer reflection. Whether in a cream double-breasted coat subtly covered in the house's logo or a chocolate-brown gown with a dramatic cape and distinct hardware, the seemingly 'simplest' items were made special through small details. "Oh, Daniel Roseberry, the man that you are! No other creative director is doing it quite like him, IMHO. We've seen so many luxury houses lean into austerity, but not our man Roseberry. It's incredibly inspiring to witness a creative director not only embrace eccentricity but use it effectively to tell thought-provoking stories. Throughout his tenure at Schiaparelli, we've seen him draw from the lore of this house to create some of the most talked-about couture collections in recent years—including the viral S/S 24 show in which the idea of astrology and societal advancements were explored through looks made from technological artifacts. While much of the chatter surrounding his work may be around his avant-garde couture collections (rightfully so), I've been personally obsessed with his most recent ready-to-wear line. It's tough for couture designers to bridge the gap between these two markets, but the S/S 25 collection did so masterfully. I particularly loved how surrealist elements were applied to super approachable items—e.g., a stone-washed trench coat was adorned with unique hardware, a little black dress was reimagined with draping, denim was transformed into a corset gown, and so on. If you watched The Simple Life as religiously as I did growing up (and still to this day), then you can probably understand the hold that Nicole Richie has over me. When she wore Von Dutch, I wanted to wear Von Dutch. And when she went on a shopping spree at Dior, investing in $2000 printed wedges for the farm and $350 shield sunglasses, I wanted to do and buy all of the same things. (Of course, as an 11-year-old, I couldn't do that, nor could I do it now, but at least it was something I could aspire to accomplish someday.) She was and always will be my muse.

While Richie's style has always been elite, and more importantly, a touch nonconformist to current trends, the recent photos I've seen from her press tour for Wade Allain-Marcus's Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead display an even chicer side to her than usual. And that's saying a lot coming from me. There was the Schiaparelli micro mini that she wore to the film's premiere at the Grove in Los Angeles, the F/W 23 Saint Laurent runway look she picked for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and of course, a touch of her own brand, House of Harlow 1960, which she wore with Saint Laurent shades and a Celine bag on The Drew Barrymore Show. There hasn't been a single miss or even a subpar ensemble from the tour. Everything's been perfect.

If you know anything about celebrity stylist Danielle Goldberg, you're well aware that her clients dress well. Like, really well. If you don't, here's a list of exceptionally well-dressed A-listers that have her to thank for their dressing expertise: Laura Harrier, Kaia Gerber, Olivia Rodrigo, Ayo Edebiri, and Camille Rowe. You see what I'm getting at? But of all the big-shot names who can credit Goldberg as their stylist right now, no one's having the style season that Past Lives star Greta Lee is having. No one. (Well, maybe Edebiri, whose red carpet looks have been the picture of perfection as well, but that's a story for another day.)

Lee's been an active member of the fashion community for a while now, regularly attending industry events and shows, not to mention arriving to red carpet events in fun, ever-evolving ensembles. But 2022 marked a shift even further into the fashion realm for the actress, who began regularly wearing runway pieces by the likes of Proenza Schouler and Peter Do for premieres and award shows. By 2023, a year marked by Jonathan Anderson and Loewe's alignment with Lee and Goldberg, the actress's ascension into the style Hall of Fame was nearly complete.

Since starring in the Spanish house's S/S 24 campaign alongside Dame Maggie Smith and Dakota Fanning, Lee's been almost exclusively a Loewe woman, with exceptions only really being made for Proenza Schouler, Prada, Ferragamo, Chanel, and Bottega Veneta (casual). First, there was her custom black, ring-neck Loewe dress at the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards, where she presented Anderson with the International Designer of the Year Award. Later that year came her lauded red, custom Loewe gown for the Academy Museum Gala. 

Then came 2024. With Anderson and Goldberg leading the way, every red carpet look of Lee's has been a hit, from her custom Loewe almost-bridal look at the Golden Globes to her rhinestone-embellished pajama look from the brand's men's S/S 24 collection at the Critics Choice Awards. And award season, not to mention the year, is just beginning. With the BAFTAs, People's Choice Awards, and, of course, the Oscars still to come, to say that our expectations are high for Lee's red carpet looks would be the understatement of the century.

The drop waist with delicate draping to boot, plus the padded, deep-V neckline, all combine to create a masterpiece that Greta Lee took to even greater levels at this year's Governors Awards.

Fashion people talk about the Academy Museum Gala a lot because despite only being three years old, it's already known for being one of the chicest red carpet events of the year, with plenty of Dior and Chanel couture inclusions, not to mention Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Valentino ones to show for it. But this year, for the third annual event, it was none of those labels that won out in the best dressed department. Rather, Loewe and Greta Lee took that position with this off-the-shoulder custom red gown.

In my opinion, whether you're on a red carpet or attending a wedding (maybe even yours!), you can never go wrong with a tea-length dress. The retro silhouette looks the epitome of class every single time.

One of Jonathan Anderson's biggest strengths is his ability to create wearable yet experimental garments, and this was especially visible in Greta Lee's CFDA look from 2023, a black, quite simple and slinky gown decorated with a sculptural, jewelry-like neckline.

When it comes to fashion, 2023 may have been Sofia Richie's best year ever. Not only has the style star been spotted wearing head-to-toe Prada, Khaite, and Proenza Schouler on the regular, but she also had an unforgettable wedding complete with several custom Chanel outfits. To say she's got good taste would be an understatement. 

But it's true: Richie has an incredible sense of personal style and can put together a look using a combination of the simplest but most versatile basics that could be part of anyone's wardrobe. In many ways, fashion week is going back to basics. As New York Fashion Week comes to a close and fashion month continues in London, it's looking like designers are putting hyper-wearable looks on the runway. 

Who What Wear editor Eliza Huber shares how versatile these looks can be. "If you buy into it, you can have those pieces for the rest of your life, and they're not boring," Huber said. "You can still style them up in really, really interesting ways." Kat Collings, Who What Wear's editor in chief, echoed a similar sentiment about seeing looks off the runway in street style moments. "There were a lot of casual, wearable luxury looks," Collings said. "What I mean by that is a great pair of jeans with a tee and a designer bag and a killer little kitten heel." For the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Collings and Huber share the trends they saw come out of NYFW, why statement jewelry is here to stay, and more.

Kat Collings: You have such a great eye for trends. I'm curious about what you saw and which ones stood out to you. What do you think will be setting the tone for shopping for next spring?

Eliza Huber: There are always so many. It's kind of crazy how many trends can fit into a five- or six-day week. I split it up into two when I was doing my research ahead of this and just throughout the week. On one side, there's a lot of continuation from fall. We saw a lot of those chrome and gold hardware moments, specifically on bags or belts or those really large '80s-inspired earrings.

KC: What else trend-wise?

EH: Another one is this trend that we called ready-to-wear [last season], which is just this hyper-wearable trend that skews away from those really loud, hard-to-style pieces and is just super classic.

If you buy into it, you can have those pieces for the rest of your life, and they're not boring. You can still style them up in really, really interesting ways using things like those chrome moments or plenty of other styling methods. We saw a ton of it this week. Tibi's whole collection really felt like a "building blocks of your wardrobe" type of collection. Proenza [Schouler] had those loud moments as well, but really at the backbone of it were really classic, timeless pieces.

KC: At first glance, overall, there was a trend of quietness on the runway. Sometimes, you want to be shocked and awed by the visuals of it, but I do think the wearability element… I'm glad that designers are taking this into consideration, and it does feel like the runway to real way is not such a big gap anymore.

KC: What trends are you here for, and what are you not into?

EH: One of the things that I'm not yet convinced of is the net fabric when it comes to garments. I think Proenza [Schouler] did an amazing job. Those final halter dresses were incredible. When it comes to a trend as a whole, I'm not necessarily ready to put all of my money into it yet.

One of the trends that I'm absolutely loving, though, is the lacy details. I'm currently in the saving process for a gorgeous strapless lace top from Beaufille. It's super simple but just feels very romantic, which is something that I want to bring into my wardrobe more in the next few seasons.

EH: What were some of the trends you were loving IRL?

KC: There were a lot of casual, wearable luxury looks. What I mean by that is a great pair of jeans with a tee and a designer bag and a killer little kitten heel. The girls are loving Prada these days in that department.

Timeless maxi dresses, statement earrings. So actually, it's feeling like the end of the peacocking era that we've known in the street style realm for so long. In the past, I've been pulled to dress in ways that weren't actually my personal style just for that splashy moment. That seems to be coming to a close, actually. It had a long reign.

You should know something about Kaia Gerber: She is delightfully funny. 

If her magnetic stare, in all its glorious intensity, had you thinking otherwise, I don’t blame you, because behind all that "blue steel”—which has graced countless fashion and beauty campaigns, runways, and red carpets—is a genuine sweetheart with one heck of a sense of humor. It’s your classic case of "you can’t judge a book by its cover.” Dripping with sarcasm, Gerber’s wit is unassuming and smart. It’s the kind that will catch you off guard in the best way. I know this because I experienced it firsthand during my hour-long interview with the model and actress (which took place in early July before the strike) and because it’s on full display in her new film Bottoms, the raunchy and hilarious teen romp directed by Emma Seligman. It appears Gerber, 22, has officially ushered in her comedic era. Lucky for us, she plans to stay a while.

"I’m excited for people to actually understand that I do, in fact, have a sense of humor,” Gerber tells me from her hotel room in Germany. Wearing a crisp white T-shirt (an item she admits is on heavy rotation in her wardrobe) with her brunette locks framing her face, she, sans makeup, is posted up casually in front of an abstract mural she thinks might be of Angelina Jolie but can’t say for sure. She’s been trying to figure it out for the last couple of months while the room has served as her home away from home. With the exception of a quick jaunt to Los Angeles back in June, Gerber has spent the majority of her spring and early summer abroad filming a yet-to-be-announced project. A few days before our interview, she took another break from production to open the Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2023-24 show in Chantilly, France. It’s but a snapshot of Gerber’s fast-paced life as a rising star in Hollywood and one of fashion’s most prominent faces.

Though it may seem that acting is a new chapter for Gerber, she’ll be the first to tell you otherwise. 

From as early as she can remember, Gerber was trying to make people laugh and perform for family and friends. If there were a play or musical happening in her hometown of Malibu, California, she was at the audition ready to go. Playing tree number two in the local production of The Wizard of Oz was a serious endeavor. She was an avid viewer of the classics and adored musical theater. It’s worth noting she is a Wicked superfan. "I actually think I’ve seen that show at least nine times,” she shares proudly. And yes, she is very excited for the upcoming movie adaptation. She loved watching Scorsese films with her dad when she got a bit older and harnessed a passion for international film by way of Jean-Luc Godard and new-wave French cinema. At 15, she landed her first professional acting job in the 2016 film Sister Cities. 

Then modelling happened.

A career in front of the lens seemed almost predestined for Gerber given her familial ties to the fashion industry. Her mother, the legendary Cindy Crawford, practically wrote the playbook on how to be a supermodel; her father, Rande Gerber, is a model turned businessman; and her older brother Presley has been the face for major brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Prabal Gurung, and Moschino. At 16, she made her runway debut for Raf Simons’s Calvin Klein collection, and from there, her career skyrocketed. There were the jam-packed fashion weeks, the glossy campaigns, the high-profile print covers—including her first American Vogue cover in 2021—the British Fashion Awards’ Model of the Year award, the design collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld, and a current partnership with Celine. "I got to travel and see the world and be independent and meet people from all over, and I thought, ‘This was so exciting,’” Gerber says. But even with all her success in modelling, her passion for performance never waivered. There was a creative pull, a proverbial knocking at the door she couldn’t ignore. She needed to give acting a real try.

"It’s scary when you have something that you have somewhat of a security in and that you have found success in to go, ‘I’m going to do something that has no guarantee,’” Gerber shares of shifting gears. "But I just thought, ‘Life is too short to not do something because it scares you,’ and oftentimes, the things that scare me are the things I should be doing.”

In 2021, Gerber made her television debut in the 10th season of the FX horror anthology American Horror Story as well as its spin-off, American Horror Stories. Last year, following a leading role in the short film The Palisades, she appeared in Damien Chazelle’s original epic Babylon.

Gerber compares finding the right role to the feeling of falling in love. "Sometimes, you can’t figure out why, but you just get butterflies, and something happens to you,” she says. Another surefire way Gerber knows she really is excited about something is if the material leaves her asking, "What is this?!” and "Who are these people?!” That was precisely her reaction to watching Emma Seligman’s first feature film, the indie flick Shiva Baby, starring Rachel Sennott. "I watched it and thought, ‘Whatever they do next, my answer would be yes,’” she says.

Enter Bottoms. Co-written by Seligman and Sennott, the comedy follows two queer high school students who start a fight club to meet girls and have sex before graduation. Sennott stars in the film opposite The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, another girl of the summer. A playful nod to the great teen comedies of the late ’90s and early aughts, Bottoms, which premiered at South by Southwest earlier this year, is the kind of weirdly funny, campy watch we’ve been missing in the last few years. 

"I read the script, and I was just like, ‘This is the gayest, horniest, funniest thing I’ve ever read,’” Gerber says. Knowing these scripts don’t come around very often and excited about the opportunity to work with a young female director, Gerber was determined to find her way into the movie. Before auditions were even being held, she put herself on tape. She ultimately landed the part of Brittany, the love interest of Sennott’s PJ. Not far off from Gerber herself, Brittany is usually perceived off looks alone, but if you peel back the layers, you’ll see there’s more there than meets the eye. "If I had watched this movie in high school, I would have had maybe an easier time, so I hope that there is some teenager out there who watches this and is like, ‘Oh my god—okay, there are other people like me,’” Gerber says.

Working on Bottoms was the equivalent of comedy boot camp for Gerber, with Sennott and Edebiri serving as her counsellors. She would study the pair’s every move, trying to match their comedic timing and figure out how their brains worked. The experience would end up being transformational for her—not just in building up her confidence in the comedy space but also in sparking a new passion for the genre.

It’s fitting, then, that Gerber’s next project is another comedy, the Apple TV+ miniseries Palm Royale (formerly titled Mrs. American Pie) about one woman’s attempt to gain a spot in Palm Beach high society. This time around, her counsellors, so to speak, were comedy heavyweights Kristen Wiig and Carol Burnett. The show also stars Laura Dern, Allison Janney, and Leslie Bibb. Not too shabby. "Some people go to Groundlings—I went to the Rachel, Ayo, Kristen, and Carol school of comedy,” Gerber says with a laugh. Gerber could have easily succumbed to imposter syndrome in such a room, but instead, she rose to the occasion and leaned into her vulnerabilities, saying "As an actor, you’re really only as good as the person you are acting with, and you can’t be self-conscious or thinking about yourself when you are with someone as amazing as Kristen or Carol or Laura. … It’s in the fear of failing that I think people don’t actually produce their best work. I’ve been lucky enough to be in environments where I feel safe enough to fall flat on my face.”

When Gerber’s not putting her comedy chops to the test alongside the greats, you’ll likely find her curled up somewhere with a good book. It’s not out of the norm for her to be rotating between three or four at a time—usually a memoir, a novel, a short story, or a poetry book. She is an enthusiastic consumer of literature, one who will happily ham it up with you about her latest book finds. Recent favorites include Acts of Service by Lillian Fishman, Lucky Dogs by Helen Schulman, and Terminal Boredom by Izumi Suzuki. 

"When people think of Kaia Gerber’s Instagram, [I don’t think] they expect to go on and basically see me only talking about books,” she says. Looking for a place to connect with others and start purposeful conversations, Gerber created her own online book club. Each month, she shares a new book with her 9.6 million followers, inviting either the author or a special guest to join her live. "I decided, Why not use this book club as a way to highlight authors and encourage people to read but also as a door or window into conversations that are really difficult to have?” she says. For this reason, she’s quite particular about the titles she chooses each month, basing it on the kind of dialogue she wants to spark. For August, Gerber hosted a live with author Alex Auder to discuss her memoir Don’t Call Me Home, a story that tackles being raised by a Warhol superstar and the intimate bonds of mother-daughter relationships. "I get to have these really incredible authors or people who just have so much insight into these topics. I am a very curious person in my life, and I think it lives in my book club as well,” she adds.

So where does modelling fit into all this? It’s obvious Gerber is leaning more into acting these days, but she is quick to clarify it’s not one or the other. The two can live harmoniously in her life. For the moment, she’s enjoying being more selective with the fashion projects she commits to. "I have fun doing it now because I get to come in and do really special, meaningful things with people that I have really deep, wonderful relationships with,” she says. The Valentino Haute Couture show is one example. Working with longtime friend Hedi Slimane as the face of Celine is another. "I love working with Celine because I really feel like it’s the coolest version of myself, and it’s not at all how cool I am in real life,” she says. Even her fashion choices on the red carpet, for which she collaborates with stylist Danielle Goldberg, are meticulously selected and have intent behind them. 

Gerber is nothing if not thoughtful in how she presents herself to the world and where she invests her time. It’s her Virgo energy showing. "I’m very organized and type A and focused,” she says. But that’s not to say she’s closed off to any new adventures the world has in store for her. At 22, Gerber is very much in a period of self-discovery. Having been thrust into the spotlight and adulthood at an early age, she’s essentially been living life in reverse. It’s only now that she’s getting in touch with her inner child and finding out what really excites her, how she feels fulfilled outside of work, and who she is as a friend, a daughter, a partner, and a mother to her rescue pup Milo. Even our cover shoot takes Gerber "back to school” with some of the season’s biggest looks. As our conversation starts winding down, Gerber gets a little introspective: "At 16, I was so much more confident in my knowledge about the world, and now, I’m like, ‘I don’t know anything about the world.’ … Growing up is realising how much more you have to learn.”

Right now, the possibilities seem endless for Gerber. First conquering modelling and now a whole new world in comedy film and television. What will she take on next? While we’ll have to wait and see, one thing is certain. Whether it’s that magnetic stare or her infectious charm on-screen, there’s no taking your eyes off of Kaia Gerber.

It took a while—and over 1000 runway images—to finally wrap our heads around the contents of fashion month. For the first time in a long time, the runways this fall/winter season had an almost tangible air of newness to them, with a handful of designer debuts—including Daniel Lee at Burberry and Ludovic de Saint Sernin at Ann Demeulemeester—and a number of veterans successfully refreshing their brands in the eyes of the fashion community. Most substantial, though, were the trends presented by these designers and so many more, who managed to deliver some of the most unexpected groupings we've seen in ages that somehow still fit within the current zeitgeist. 

Tory Burch, Miuccia Prada for Prada and Miu Miu, Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent, and Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta all seemed to grasp what so many have tried and failed to in the past—that is, what women actually wear. In a relatable move, Prada sent models down the runway at Miu Miu looking intentionally frazzled, having remembered to wear stockings and outerwear but forgotten pants and a hairbrush.

Elsewhere, Vaccarello's Saint Laurent collection displayed a contrasting glimpse of the female form, one that's strict in its put-togetherness, utilizing intensely strong tailoring and powerful silhouettes to get his message across. Finally, at Loewe, Ferragamo, and Jil Sander, our desire for comfort played out in the form of furry footwear, fashionable security blankets, and apparel fitted with oversize hoods.

We started seeing one of the most dominant colors of the season—fiery red—at the start of fashion month in New York, and it only picked up momentum from there. Practically every fashion designer had the bold shade in the collection, from slim suiting at Ferragamo to a polished coat and gloves at The Row. We're already predicting it will sweep fall fashion, so early adopters will want to invest in it now.

This season, designers finally seemed to get that when we have a dozen things on our plates, all spinning simultaneously, it's hard to put together a proper outfit without forgetting a piece or two along the way. At Miu Miu, Prada sent models down the runway looking frazzled and missing a few wardrobe items, including bras and pants, and it seems underwear and tights will do. Bottega Veneta and JW Anderson featured models sans shoes, with Blazy's take being leather socks and Jonathan Anderson's being simple cotton ones. After all this time, it appears that fashion has finally grasped the concept of relatability without sacrificing any points in the style department.

One of the prevailing messages on the fall 2023 runways was wearability. It is the buzzy word of the season as designers are in stealth mode and are focused on pieces that are truly ready to wear. Miu Miu was a master class in casual yet directional dressing with easy legging looks. Tory Burch leaned into cool prep with tailored trousers and knits. Saint Laurent took this to an elegant, polished place with satin tank tops and pencil skirts. Perhaps the look that embodies this spirit of wearability most is the finale look at Bottega Veneta—a riff on the opening look for Matthieu Blazy's debut F/W 22 collection featuring a white tank top and jeans—which proves that the seasonless pieces are meant to be collected and restyled season after season.

In the spring 2023 collections, we saw a focus on dress designs with built-in hoods. This detail will continuing into the fall 2023 collections with pieces ranging from industrial parkas at Prada to dramatic faux-fur outerwear at Bally to uncomplicated hoodies at Miu Miu. The hoods infuse a sense of practicality into pieces ranging from the simple to the ornate, driving home the point that wearability is one of the biggest themes of the fall collections.

If we learned anything this season, it's that you don't have to stay home to enjoy the luxuries we have become accustomed to after lounging on the sofa in our comfiest loungewear. Instead, all you need is a pair of hyper-stylized heels and an oversize clutch made of soft shearling or fuzzy faux fur. Thanks to labels like Burberry, Gucci, and Khaite, comfort is now officially an anytime, anywhere state of being and one that doesn't require a single ounce of style sacrifice.

If you were still under the impression that wearing loungewear to work from home makes no difference to your productivity levels, this season's take on power dressing will make you do a complete 180. From the needle-sharp shoulders at Saint Laurent to the sculpted skirt suits at Versace, the office attire presented over the last month could make anyone feel like the chicest, most admired, and most powerful person in the boardroom and beyond. It's time to ditch the Superman pose and invest in a tie, sleek pencil skirt, and blazer that looks custom tailored for your exact measurements.

If there is one jewelry piece to buy for winter 2024, it is the chunky earring. Hot on the heels of the viral Bottega Veneta Drop Earrings that continue to be sold out everywhere and found in the wardrobes of celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, we're seeing a rising appetite for outfit-finishing statement earrings that designers are delivering for fall. On the runways, designers styled them with everything from elegant eveningwear to simple tank tops, so they're intended to be worn for practically any occasion.

There's a reason retailers can't seem to keep Toteme's scarf-jacket in stock. We want to feel comfortable 24/7 without looking like it, which is only really possible when you're wearing a wildly chic piece of outerwear that drapes around you like a tight hug. Other designers see and understand this, which is why they've taken it upon themselves to level up in the comfort department this season, securing blanket-like shawls to outerwear with an elevated brooch (seen at Saint Laurent) and wrapping models in butter-like heavy-silk fabric (displayed at Loewe).

We've already seen evidence that hosiery is on the rise, as tights have made a major impact in the wardrobes of celebrities and fashion insiders on the street style set recently. Whether or not you've test-driven the piece, the fall 2023 runways are solidifying the trend even further with styles such as opaque tights worn as pants at Alaïa, fiery-red colorways at David Koma, and fishnet textures at Victoria Beckham. Gucci and Miu Miu also offered up new ways of styling them—instead of tucking them discreetly underneath the outfits, the designers made a point of styling them with low-slung skirts and cardigans tucked in so they're intentionally visible.

Metallics have officially reached a fever pitch, with high-shine accessories selling at the speed of light these days. Well, let me introduce you to everyone's next obsession: metallic jeans. Both Proenza Schouler and Gabriela Hearst both showed styles during NYFW last month, and they immediately caught my attention for their oddly low-key feel, considering the statement pants were styled with wardrobe mainstays like blazers and ankle boots.

It didn't take long before the runway shows sent me into an internet rabbit hole in search of a similar pair I could shop for now—and not have to wait another six months for. As if reading my mind, Gap released a set of jeans in both silver and gold colorways. Even better, they ring up for under $100, making them a no-brainer buy for someone like me who's fixated on recreating these runway looks. But my research didn't stop there. I've since spent hours hunting down the best pairs to shop and I'm pleased to report that I've sourced 17 pairs for you here.

On the Runways

Proenza Schouler debuted a pair of shiny metallic trousers on their fall 2023 runway just last month during NYFW and I haven't quite been the same since. Metallics can easily feel intimidating and yet the down-to-earth styling with a tailored coat and ankle boots was surprisingly approachable and, dare I say, easy.

Metallic pants popped up at Coach this season, too, where they were married to shiny shearling-lined jackets and accessorized with bright-pink accents.

The '80s glam that defines Isabel Marant was as present as ever this season. The brand showed a menswear look consisting of slouchy silver jeans and a metallic-thread sweater that I'm praying they produce in a womenswear-friendly size range, too.

Another designer on board is Gabriela Hearst. Her fall collection features a pair of metallic jeans that peek out from underneath a long dress coat. It proved that even just a sliver of shiny fabric is enough to make an impact.

Even though the fall collections were heavy on the metallics, the theme was already starting to percolate for spring 2023. Here, Isabel Marant's summer-friendly idea involves silver cargo trousers and a delicate strapless top.

The runways presented a united front on how to wear the silver jeans trend, aka with classic pieces in neutral tones. Whether it's a blazer, coat, or simple top, styling them with our everyday wardrobe foundations is the way to go.

On the Fashion Set

My colleague Sierra just wore silver jeans with a blue denim jacket, and now I'm officially inspired to do the same.

A fun graphic tee and layers of jewelry is an easy way to bring down the disco-looking jeans into the daytime.

This trend is made for a night out. Wear the jeans with a black blazer, bodysuit, and embellished pumps to really let them have their moment.

Of course, if you're feeling especially bold, a full-on metallic-coated Canadian tux is always an option.

I wouldn't have thought to wear them with ballet flats and a woven bag, but something about this contrast just works.

Given the sheer quantity of trends that come out of any given runway season, standout colors can oftentimes fail to garner the attention they deserve, being deprioritized in reports because of barely there miniskirts, motorcycle tropes, and voluminous silhouettes. But not this season. After a ubiquitous presence at New York and London Fashion Week, no one can deny that red—specifically a vibrant, chili-pepper red—is one of if not *the* standout trend of fashion month thus far, surpassing even the most shocking garments that've come down the runway.

The list of brands that have included at least one bright-red look is endless, with inclusions ranging from Tory Burch and David Koma to Sandy Liang and Proenza Schouler. And it hasn't only found a place on the runways. On the streets outside of shows, attendees in both London and New York have styled the shade to their hearts' content in the form of handbags, hair accessories, eyewear, ready-to-wear, and more. Amy Odell is a fashion journalist, former editor at Cosmopolitan.com, and a founding blogger of New York Magazine's The Cut, but her latest work tackles fashion from a different perspective. She's profiling one of its most influential and somewhat mysterious figures, Anna Wintour. Odell, who also authored the fashion industry tell-all Tales from the Back Row, interviewed over 250 sources for the definitive biography of the longtime Vogue editor, which is titled Anna: The Biography. (None of them, however, were actually Wintour.)

In the latest episode of our podcast, Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Odell talks about how the book came to be, the harrowing process of interviewing all those sources, and whether she thinks the woman behind that iconic bob and sunglasses actually cares about fashion. She's obviously a very fascinating person, but I'm curious about your own motivation and desire to write this book. Why this book, and why now?

I started on the book in 2018, and it came to me through the publisher—they had had the idea. And I knew one of the editors over who I worked with on the book, Karyn Marcus, who was phenomenal. She acquired my first book, so that was that connection. I didn't think I would ever write a book like this, to be honest with you. I wanted to write essays. I wanted to write humor. I didn't think I was ever going to write a biography. I was waiting to go into labor with my son, and I must have been five days late. So I was super stressed out about that. And I get this call from my agent, and she says, "They're interested in an Anna biography, and they thought of you. What do you think about that?" And I got a shiver up my spine. I just got chills. I thought, "That sounds like an incredible assignment." I got on the phone with Karyn and another editor, Aimée Bell. And Aimée said it's the idea that's hiding in plain sight.

Also around this time in 2018, I'm sure you remember this, Hillary, but there were rumors that Anna was going to leave Vogue. And they were printed in the New York Post, and it trended on Twitter, and huge fashion stories don't blow up like this. But Anna is an icon who transcends fashion, and she's a significant part of culture and has been for 34 years. And when you think of the opportunity with a book about someone like Anna, it is one thing to get to the top. It is another to stay there. And she has been there running Vogue since the summer of 1988. And as I said, 34 years at the helm. You think of other business leaders like Jeff Bezos. He left [his role as CEO of] Amazon after 27. So this is extremely unusual, this tenure, and she has had this remarkable power in fashion. Yet despite having this public position, she has remained an enigma, even to people who know her, and I wanted Anna: The Biography to pull back the curtain on who she really is as a person and as a mega, mega influencer. 

I love the nitty-gritty details of how it all comes together, so I would be curious about anything that you are able to share about your process.

It was extremely difficult, extremely difficult. In the beginning, I thought I was gonna have to give up, and I wasn't gonna be able to get it done because you just have to call a lot of people and reach out to a lot of people, and I got a lot of "nos," like weeks of "nos," and that's really dispiriting. But I ultimately figured out how to make some progress. I went back to the beginning of Anna's life, and I decided to report chronologically. I had some success with that strategy. The thinking was that people who she knew when she was 20 would be much more distant from her than people she knew when she was 60. And that turned out to be the case with those people. It was easier to get people from a long time ago to talk. I made a lot of progress, and after about a year and a half of working on the book, Anna got wind of the fact that I was working on it. I was very careful. The reason I was so careful was because when I was approaching people, they would say one of two things. Some people said, "She's gonna shut you down, and she's gonna use Conde Nast to shut you down. And they're going to do everything they can to make sure that this doesn't happen, and if they have to threaten your publisher, though, they'll threaten your publisher." The other group of people said, "I thought she was great, and I think she's going to help you with this." That group of people turned out to be right. She did end up helping me. And what happened was after about a year and a half, I spoke to a representative in her office, and I explained this as a biography about a woman in a unique position of power, and what came of that conversation is that they said, "Anna would like to set you up with some of her closest friends and colleagues for interviews." They sent over a list of names that included people like Tom Ford, Serena Williams, and Hamish Bowles, who has been at Vogue for a very long time. And I subsequently asked if she would be okay with me interviewing a number of other people who wouldn't talk to me without her saying okay, and she said yes to every single person. This was all done through her rep. She declined herself to sit for an interview. She declined several requests to sit for an interview. But once that happened, the floodgates opened for me, so I was able to get the people who would be the main characters of her career, like Grace Coddington, Phyllis Posnick, and Sally Singer in addition to Serena Williams and Tom Ford. So that was major, and people who had [first] hung up on me picked up the phone to talk to me. You have to be really, really persistent as a journalist, as you well know. And you have to go back and ask people again and again and again, and it all ultimately came together. It was a lot of work. It was very, very hard. A lot of doubt along the way.

So I'm curious about whether you personally, after all of these years of being immersed in her psyche, think… Does she care about fashion? Does she care about power? Does she care about influence? What's the most important thing to her, in your mind?

Different people have different answers to that question, which is partly what makes her a different subject. I asked a lot of people. Is she an introvert or an extrovert? And people couldn't come to a consensus on that question, which I thought was crazy. But I got a lot of answers, like you can't put her in a box like that. You also get different answers to the question, What is her passion? Some people are going to tell you she loves fashion. Some people will tell you she's all about power. André Leon Talley said she's all about power. Or her friend David Hare, the playwright in London, told me she's not about power at all. And he was funny because I asked him if Anna had talked about meeting the queen, and we've all seen those photos of Anna and the queen front row at a fashion show at London Fashion Week. And he said they were just laughing about it. They just thought it was so funny that she had had that opportunity. And he didn't think she was about power at all. So I think, "What do you draw from that?" What I draw from that is that she shows different sides of herself to different people, and she is good at compartmentalizing.

My mom discovered a fashion trend without even trying. In anticipation of Chicago’s winter, my mom and I always go coat shopping together to try to find her a new warm jacket. We tear up Michigan Avenue, going from store to store in 15-minute increments. The same thing happens in every store: I pull out funky bombers and cropped puffers, my mom shakes her head no, and she reaches for a knee-length jacket.

"Come on, Mom. Why not this one?” I’ll say, holding out a leather bomber that I secretly hope she likes so I can "borrow” it from her closet.

She informs me for the 97th time that she will not wear any jacket that does not fully cover her butt. I remind her of her great physique, which is perhaps due to weekly pilates and five-mile runs every day. In turn, she tells me that’s not the point and to not push it. "I’ll wear a short coat the same day you wear a long one,” is her final word on the matter.

In my defense, I tried wearing long coats. But every long puffer made me feel like an elongated walking marshmallow, every trench coat made me feel like a lurking private investigator, and every wool overcoat made me feel like I was trapped in a blanket. Then one night, as I was putting on my favorite leather jacket to go out, it hit me: long leather jackets.

While I still may not understand my mom’s no-short-coats rule, I will say that I can get behind her long-coat look. Long leather coats are the ideal jacket for winter. When ranking pop music's most fashionable acts, Dua Lipa is, without a doubt, within the top 5. The singer has "arrived" in a big way this year after serving alongside Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and Anna Wintour as co-chair of this week's Met Gala. After all, not everyone gets the chance to help plan one of fashion's biggest nights. But the invitation is a no-brainer if you've kept tabs on Lipa's style. 

Simply put, the English singer is a fashion person in every sense of the word. Take her Instagram, for example. Lipa is a prolific outfit documented. Her feed is full of photos documenting the outfits she's worn for her international tour, during fashion week, and on random vacations. It's clear Lipa enjoys experimenting with clothes. Few other artists can rival the number of outfit photos Lipa posts. It's also clear that she, or someone on her team, has a knack for discovering up-and-coming brands. In digging through Lipa's archive of fashion photos, I found she seems to wear indie brands just as often as big-name designers. She was one of the first people to wear Fancì Club's viral Garden of Eden dress and among the first to wear other emerging labels like No Dress, KNWLS, and Louisa Ballou. It could be (and very likely is) that designers send Lipa these amazing clothes themselves. Still, it says a lot that she can spot the pieces and brands that later become cult favorites.

But along with supporting small brands, the singer is also a mainstay on the fashion week circuit, sitting front row at Saint Laurent and Versace. She's also close friends with Simon Porte Jacquemus (she attended his wedding), so it's safe to say she'll never be short on good clothes. Lately, Lipa's outfit snaps have been on another level, so I've documented the best for posterity's sake. Let the outfit replication begin!

Outfit 1: A Night Out With Fancì Club

Lipa is known to hop on viral fashion pieces before they've hit the mainstream, and it was no different when she wore Fancì Club's ruffled Garden of Eden dress last year. Paired with cerulean D'Accori satin platform heels, it's a match made in vacation-outfit heaven.

Truthfully? I've had this photo saved for months in hopes of buying this set for myself someday. Then I saw the $5,000+ price tag. For a trip down under, the pop star wore a glittering gold crochet set straight off Proenza Schouler's S/S 23 runway. She wore it months before it was released in stores (ah, the perks of being a fashion darling). Maybe it's the Lipa effect, but the cardigan and pants are sold out, so I've also included a similarly striking option below.

Outfit 3: Cool in Courrèges 

Call it a bias, but if I spot someone wearing Courrèges, I instantly think they're cool. When I saw Lipa in this lemon-yellow skirt set from the French house, it felt like the apex of cool. Courrèges' coated jackets and skirts aren't cheap, but they are a good investment. They've been a staple for the brand since being introduced in the '60s, and they haven't really changed. They can also fetch top dollar on the resale market.

Lipa wore a halter-neck jumpsuit and a cascading Saint Laurent leather trench coat for the designer's F/W 23 show in March. Evidently, she's a pro at seamlessly oscillating between high fashion and street style.

Everyone wants to be in Miu Miu right now. The brand is the moment. Lipa took one of its signature leather sets for a spin in Mexico City, pairing it with a cropped button-down shirt. Distressed leather with this type of shirt isn't a combo you see every day, but it's a worthwhile one to note if you're in the mood to take a sartorial risk.

Even as a professional shopper, I sometimes get fatigued struggling to put together a decent outfit every day. I'll take any opportunity to make getting dressed easier, and that heavily includes some type of matching set. I've already talked about the joys of adopting a knitted pant set as a sweatsuit alternative, but another, equally comfortable version has popped up on my radar.

Elevated, sophisticated, and, most critical of all, comfy skirt sets are the two-piece combo that's been my wardrobe MVP. It's pretty much the simplest way to make it seem like you put in way more effort than you really did. The trick? Look for sumptuous fabrics or cool details like a contrast stitch or side cutouts to keep it looking expensive. And pro tip: If your calendar is filled with endless parties and engagements this season, you'll want to keep a few of these on rotation for a quick fancy outfit. Fashion collaborations come in a variety of guises. Some result in an exciting fusion of design aesthetics while other designers probably should've just stuck to what they do best. Proenza Schouler and Birkenstock might not have been the most obvious of fashion bedfellows, but when these two brands dropped their first sandal collaboration in 2020, the fashion crowd couldn't get enough—and neither could I.

And, as it turns out, the now best-selling style isn't just a fashion-editor fave but a celebrity fave, too. And designer, presenter, and all-around-style icon Alexa Chung just wore them on holiday, firmly cementing the fashionable collab as an It shoe for the ages.

Complete with a printed shirt and denim mini, Alexa's look is a masterclass in off-duty holiday style and a look at just how versatile the elevated Birkenstock can be.

With all of Proenza's design know-how and the comfy, hard-wearing appeal of Birkenstock's iconic sandal, the collaboration first entered the market just as the "gorpcore" trend was hitting the big time. With their clean lines, pops of colour and comfortable fit, the sandals are a rare meeting of form and function. So it comes as no surprise that the sellout collection returned for 2022 and still looks as fresh as when it first dropped. 

"Birkenstocks have always had a special place in our lives and are one of the few things that the two of us have in common from our separate and completely different childhood experiences," explain Proenza Schouler's co-founders, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. "We each grew up wearing Birkenstocks, and as we went off to college in the '90s, they felt like such an iconic part of our wardrobes, but we really see them as timeless. We have such respect for the integrity of a pair of Birkenstocks. Our brands have a shared attention to quality and detail, so it made a lot of sense to join forces and create something that feels authentic and lasting.

"When we launched our last collection, it was right at the beginning of lockdown. Truthfully, we were a bit worried. Everything seemed to be falling apart when we were launching this really exciting project, but in the end, it was the perfect timing," they explain. "All people wanted to wear were Birkenstocks around the house with a pair of comfy socks, on their quick trips to the grocery store or on daily walks. The perfect quarantine shoe! And now, even though we are re-entering the world and socializing, we still wanted to keep that casual sensibility, that low-to-the-ground, comfortable, slip-on-and-go shoe. There's no fuss to it. For us, personally, we want to be comfortable but also want to feel polished with a bit of an elevated edge. The idea that you don't have to choose between those two states has been our biggest source of inspiration while designing."

I was lucky enough to road-test the latest collection, including new colours and the classic monochrome varieties that have proven popular with Chung. And yes, I can confirm that they are just as good as the first drop. They're comfortably cool and will look good with everything in your wardrobe. I wouldn't call myself a shoe person, and so I have never been tempted to spend a lot on a designer pair of heels or anything you'd classify as really "special." I get too many blisters and don't take enough Ubers. There is one exception to this, however, as Proenza Schouler's ankle boots, loafers and sandals are tempting for people like me who want their shoes to be "hardy" and practical. They manage to do the seemingly impossible and make chunky loafers and hiking boots actually quite beautiful, thanks to the quality leather and distinctive stitching and buckles. 

This summer Proenza Schouler was responsible for the most in-demand pair of sandals, as they collaborated with Birkenstock on a special edition version of its two-strap sandals. Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and more were spotted wearing them throughout the summer, however, it looks like the brand is going to continue its winning streak into winter. There is one pair in particular which is quickly gaining traction this autumn: the tread sole T-bar leather loafers. They have a school-girl charm thanks to the silver buckle and cutout detailing, but the cream leather and burgundy patent options make them feel more elevated than typical loafers.

As a brand, Birkenstock is no stranger to designer collaborations. Over the years, the footwear label has partnered with the likes of Valentino, Rick Owens and more, to create special edition iterations of its instantly-recognizable sandals. 

Of course, this summer is no different as Birkenstock recently launched a collaboration collection in partnership with buzzy, New York-based brand Proenza Schouler. Taking Birkenstocks' signature two-strap silhouette, the designers added contrast top-stitching to the sandals and released the footwear in a range of colours including black, white, silver and yellow. 

Unsurprisingly, the item has already caught the attention of celebrities and influencers worldwide, as the shoe has been worn by Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and more throughout the summer. 

When it comes to styling, several It-girls are opting for the Alexa look, by pairing the shoe alongside socks, while in warmer parts of the world, the footwear is being worn alongside swimsuit and linen shirts for beachside strolls. As the shoes have already sold out on a few websites, it's clear the Proenza Schouler x Birkenstock collaboration has been another success for the footwear label. There are few makeup artists as legendary and prolific as Gucci Westman. She’s responsible for the beauty looks on countless magazine covers (think Jennifer Aniston for InStyle and Reese Witherspoon for Vogue) and ad campaign and runway looks for fashion’s biggest brands (Dior, Proenza Schouler, and Oscar de la Renta), and she has a celebrity client list that could fill this page. Westman’s coveted aesthetic has become renowned and unmistakable, a supernatural dewy glow, which you may or may not recognize as makeup at all. 

Growing up between Sweden and L.A. gave Westman a unique perspective on beauty from a young age, and at 23, she enrolled in a four-month program at a makeup school in Paris. She was hooked and shortly thereafter moved back to L.A. to put her newly learned techniques to use. Though she worked many of her first jobs without pay, prioritizing the experience and exposure, it wasn’t long before word of her profound talent and dedicated work ethic spread, and she added her first legendary piece of work to her résumé: the makeup for Spike Jonze’s feature film directorial debut, Being John Malkovich. It was there that she met Cameron Diaz, whom she would work with regularly in the coming years, while adding countless other celebrities to her roster.

Westman eventually moved to New York, where she met Vogue’s creative director, Grace Coddington (tune in for that story), and her career would be forever changed. "I had probably a year and a half straight where I did all of the covers, and then I also had multiple issues where I did the cover and every story,” she remembers of her early days with Vogue. Westman had become arguably the most influential makeup artist of the time, working between editorial and brand campaigns and fashion week runway shows from New York to Milan, where she recounts not only spotting trends on the runway but also creating them. "In New York, I used to do sometimes eight or nine shows, and if I really wanted a red lip to be a trend, I would do it multiple times until it translated that the red lip is a trend,” says Westman. 

Westman went on to become the international artistic director at Lancôme and spent 13 years as the global artistic director at Revlon, where she worked on product development, color, and trend collections for the brand. Those experiences became invaluable when, two years ago, after identifying a white space in the market, she debuted her own line of clean, high-performance, and uncompromisingly luxurious makeup under Westman Atelier. Creating formulations from scratch that meet her highly critical performance standards and exclude her extensive ingredient blacklist is no easy feat, but as Westman says, "nothing that comes easily is rewarding." Now, as the founder and creative director of the brand, Westman’s aesthetic and creative vision are coming alive in a brand-new way.
