What is your signature fragrance?

I don’t have a signature fragrance. I use fragrance to evoke a mood. All of the characters I play, for example, have their own fragrance too. It’s actually a ritual for me to pick a fragrance for a character that I feel embodies her. Right now, I am wearing Cartier La Panthère.

Strong lips or a strong eye?

Depends on the mood and the look, but I’m really into a moody winged eyeliner right now.

You’re having your nails done—what’s your go-to colour?

Anything other than nude. When I’m on a job, my nails are almost always nude, so when I’m not on a job, I like to do something colourful and fun.

What is your beauty philosophy in a sentence?

Less is more.

What is your favourite lipstick colour? 

Golden Dust from my new collection with Max Factor. It's a pumpkin shade, which I love.

What’s your biggest beauty no-no? 

Not removing your makeup before you go to bed!

Candles, reed diffusers or nothing at all? 

Candles.

If you could share one piece of beauty advice, what would it be? 

I think it would be the importance of skincare before you apply makeup. I always took care of my skin, but when I started working with Pati Dubroff, she always prioritised my skincare before a makeup application, and the makeup just looked better.

What beauty product do you recommend to everyone? 

My new Max Factor collection, of course. Each shade is designed to flatter all skin tones.

I’m a big believer in priming the skin, especially for the red carpet. It keeps everything in place and even.

Probably not often enough.

What beauty rule do you always break?

Are there beauty rules? I think beauty is a tool that allows you to express yourself and your creativity. We are all different, and what is right for me may not be right for someone else. So I don’t really believe in breaking beauty rules, because there aren’t any.

Would you rather have ultra-skinny brows or bleached brows? 

Bleached brows.

Which celebrity’s hair would you love to steal?

No one—honestly, I think my hair is pretty great.

Which era of beauty inspires you most? 

I think the '60s. The early part of this decade was all about elegant eyes, delicate shades, and the mid-part of the decade was dramatic with bold mod eyes. I feel like this really embodies me. I’m moody with my makeup and love to play and experiment with different techniques. So this feels like my era.

When it comes to celebrity makeup artists, Mary Phillips is basically considered royalty. She's responsible for some of the most iconic makeup looks of the past few years. I’m talking Jennifer Lopez’s bronzed and glowing Venice Film Festival look (yes, the one when she made her 2021 red carpet debut with Ben Affleck), Kendall Jenner’s most beautiful Met Gala moments and just about every Hailey Bieber makeup look I’ve ever saved on Instagram.

As someone who doesn’t find makeup application easy but also champions a natural-looking, fresh-faced look, I have been somewhat obsessed with Hailey Bieber’s makeup—it exudes health and radiance without ever appearing too contrived. And as her long-time makeup artist, if there is one person in this industry who knows the answer to the age-old beauty question of how to achieve naturally flawless-looking skin, it’s Phillips.

So when Hourglass gave me the opportunity to pick Phillips’s brain on all things makeup and skin, I knew that it was my one shot to get to the bottom of what really goes into her trademark fresh, glowing looks. I realised some time ago that the thing that sets Phillips apart from other celebrity makeup artists in L.A. is her ability to work with skin rather than against it, and I wanted to know her tips.

Unsurprisingly, I’ve been overthinking it for far too long. It turns out the secret lies in six very simple steps.

1. Prep the Skin

This is a makeup step that I often overlook (and almost always skip when I’m short on time). Phillips insists that prepping and priming the skin is key to a fresh, natural base. "A natural-looking glow always starts with prepped skin. I highly recommend using a skin tool, such as a gua sha or jade roller, after moisturiser. It helps with product penetration, increases blood flow and decreases puffiness before starting your makeup application,” she says. For an extra complexion-smoothing boost, Phillips also recommends using a tinted SPF formula in the morning: "It helps protect skin from UV rays and provides sheer coverage simultaneously.” 

And the skin prep doesn’t stop there. The key to an even complexion, Phillips says, is an oil-absorbing primer—but it’s no good just slapping it on all over. "Using a primer before foundation helps with visible pores, and I love the Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer for its skin-perfecting, blurring effect. Apply your oil-absorbing primer to the T-zone, leaving the skin on the high points of the face super hydrated. It’s the best way to tackle shine without sacrificing glow.”

2. Apply a Light Layer of Foundation

When it comes to foundation application, Phillips warns that going in too heavy can jeopardise your overall finish. "Over-application doesn’t look natural. Less is more. Start with a light layer of foundation so you can still see what areas need extra coverage with concealer,” she says.

Look for creamy foundations with light-to-medium coverage that melt into the skin rather than sit on top of it. Opting for a formula that's lightweight and delivers a subtle radiance (instead of a cakey, matte finish) will help ensure your natural glow shines through.

3. Apply Concealer Only Where You Need It

Mary Phillips is also makeup artist to Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

While some makeup artists recommend applying concealer before your foundation to get a full-coverage, long-lasting finish, when it comes to Phillips’s iconic fresh-faced looks, any step that risks over-application should be avoided at all costs. "I prefer applying concealer after foundation to ensure I am focusing only on the areas that need the extra coverage,” she reveals. "I apply it with a brush and blend it out with a sponge, setting with a light dusting of powder.”

When it comes to areas of concern like dark circles, she advises using a colour corrector rather than packing on concealer. "Using a colour corrector under a full-coverage concealer will help to minimise the appearance of dark circles and brighten the under-eyes at the same time,” Phillips reveals.

Similarly, when it comes to spots, it’s wise to keep things minimal. She advises, "I use a very small, flat brush and apply concealer directly to the area of concern. Once the concealer is dry, I lightly dust powder over it to set.”

4. Powder in the Right Places

You will have likely already noticed that Phillips is a fan of setting powders, and this isn’t something you see too often amongst makeup artists who are keen to get a glowing look. The secret, she says, is in knowing where to apply it. "Because I prefer a fresh-skin look that glows, I don’t like to use too much powder. It’s about balance; knowing where to powder and where to let the skin shine through,” she says.

According to Phillips, areas to apply powder include the under-eye area to reduce concealer creasing and fading as well as the T-zone to take down shine.

5. Apply Bronzer and Blusher

Mary Phillips is the makeup artist behind some of J.Lo’s most iconic beauty looks.

After you’ve nailed your base, it’s time to go in with some colour. "Once you have lightly set skin with powder, add bronzer and blush,” says Phillips. Cream formulas, she says, can be great options. "A cream blush is always great because you can apply it with your fingertips to add colour to cheeks, eyes and lips!” On top of this, cream formulas also tend to be more foolproof when it comes to blending, melting into the base you already have rather than sitting on top of it.

6. Add Glow to High Points Only

There’s no doubt that Phillips’s beauty looks rely on highlighter to amplify radiance, but the way in which it’s applied leaves you questioning whether there’s any product on the skin at all. Her top tip is to be very careful with where you apply your highlighter. "Be sure to add shine to the skin on the high points of the face, such as the tops of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and brow bone,” she says.

However, if visible pores are an area of concern for you, think carefully about where you add other glow-boosting products. "Products that aim to boost glow can make skin texture more pronounced, so I wouldn’t suggest using them in areas you are trying to minimise and blur,” she warns.

If you had to leave the house in five minutes, what are a few staple beauty products you’d use?

It's funny because my everyday makeup really is just five minutes. I always start with a great moisturizer—basically whatever moisturizer will make my skin feel like yours is looking at the moment.

Oh my gosh… thank you!

You want to pick a formula that makes you feel really great. If it’s daytime, I’ll add a few drops of sunblock, and if it’s nighttime, I’ll add a little bit of serum to have a nice glow. I’m not really big on foundation, but I will do a quick under-eye tap with a concealer stick, maybe around the mouth too, and then I'll just blend it out. Eyelash curler, mascara, and then whatever lip I'm feeling. I love applying lipstick with my finger so you get this nice, diffused feeling—it’s less lipsticky. And then I’ll just use the same finger and add a little bit to my cheeks, blend it out, and I’m ready to go. If I’m feeling crazy, then maybe I’ll do my eyebrows, too. [Laughs]

Well, you naturally have great brows, so I feel like you can definitely get away with not touching them.

Oh no, I definitely need to fill them out! I love eyebrow pencils, and I usually use Brow Wiz ($23) from Anastasia Beverly Hills. I spray some hair spray on the spoolie side, and then I use it to comb through and position my brow hairs.

You also have amazing lashes, and I know you mentioned mascara. Do you have a favorite?

I do, actually! I love YSL’s mascara, the one that’s in the black tube.

Yes, it’s amazing.

Let's talk a little more about skincare. On days when you’re not working or you’re just staying in, what does your skin routine look like both morning and night?

Well, okay, let’s start with my nighttime routine. I love using a face wash that won’t strip my skin too much. At the moment, I’m using this really soft, gentle face wash from Obagi. Then, eye makeup remover—I use one from Shiseido so there’s not even an ounce of makeup on my face before I go to bed. Next, I moisturize, and I like to be a little more heavy-handed at night because I have drier skin, and I'll top it off with a night serum. At the moment, I’m using products from Dr. Barbara Sturm, her Face Cream ($215), and she has amazing serums, which I'll rotate depending on what my skin needs on any given night. It's usually her Hyaluronic Serum ($300) or Night Serum ($310). Oh, and eye cream! I use an eye cream from 111Skin. 

Morning is pretty much the same thing. Once I’ve showered and my face is washed and is feeling clean, I'll use a water-based moisturizer, which is less sticky and shiny. Dr. Barbara Sturm has this Face Cream Light ($205), which I like for the daytime. Sunblock! People think that if you have darker skin, you don’t really need sunblock, but every skin tone needs sunblock when you’re going outside. 

Do you have any bodycare rituals or product staples you swear by?

I love moisturizing my body. I do it religiously twice a day. If I’m feeling really adventurous and crazy, I’ll do coconut oil, which my skin responds really well to. So it's that, or I'll do a body butter. I’ve been using one from Diptyque, and oh my god, it smells amazing. I do really like my body moisturizers to smell good. Then I brush my teeth, I spray a little perfume on, and I’m off to bed! 

Oh, I’m also in the perfume-before-bed camp. It’s just a nice little extra touch. 

It is! You know, it doesn't even have to be when Nick’s around. It’s just a habit. I like to feel fresh when I go to bed. I also keep some lavender oil by my bedside. I use it to moisturize my hands and feet when I’m in bed. Then, if you touch your nose, you smell it, and it’s just really calming.

You just launched your own haircare brand, Anomaly. What was the driving force behind that, and why did you choose haircare versus other popular categories like skincare, fragrance, or makeup?

Well, I always knew that I wanted to get into beauty, and as a businessperson, I was really looking for the gap in the market, the white space, in a way. I knew it had to be something that was clean, vegan, cruelty-free—that was important to me. Sustainability was important to me. And then I went and did my research, and I realized when you want to create a sustainable, clean product, it’s just so expensive. So my quest became wanting to democratize beauty, especially when it comes to hair. I mean, we have it with skincare! We have great clean skincare brands that aren’t so expensive, but when it comes to haircare, so many of the high-quality, clean brands are extremely expensive. 

I think the beauty industry of our generation really needs to take responsibility for our plastic footprint. All of our packaging at Anomaly is made with 100% recycled trash from oceans and landfills, so we’re not contributing to new plastic that exists on this earth. We’re taking the plastic that already existed and recycling it and hoping our customers also recycle it, and, you know, end that cycle.

The line is beautiful. I've tried it, and every product is really so amazing. Looking at it, you'd never think it was made from recycled trash.

Aw, thank you. I think our bottles look really beautiful and look really chic. They don’t scream gender, which is something that really annoys me within the haircare genre. You know, if it’s for a woman, then it has flowers! And if it’s for a man, then it’s black or navy. I don’t like those labels, which was why I was very clear about making the brand unisex, inclusive of every kind of person and every kind of hair. And because we spent so little on the packaging, we had the budget to make a really clean, superior formula. The trifecta just works, and I’m really glad to be one of the very few people in the market who have done it. I mean, each product is just $6.

If you had to choose three favorite products, what would you choose and why?

Hmmm, I love the Clarifying Shampoo ($6). Whenever I have lots of product in my hair or my hair feels oily, it’s just amazing. It gives you this super-squeaky-clean feeling without stripping or drying out your hair. I also love the Deep Conditioning Treatment Mask ($6). I like to use it at least twice a week, especially on the ends of my hair for about 10 or 15 minutes max. It's really done wonders for my hair. And because I’m always on the go, my third favorite would probably be the Dry Shampoo ($6). It smells divine, and it just gives your hair that extra bit of va-va-voom.

I know you're constantly getting your hair done for work, but what’s your go-to at-home styling routine like?

Usually this [laughs], which is a topknot with a few bangs that are out. But since quarantine and not having people blow-drying my hair all the time, I’ve been able to experiment a lot with my natural texture. I wash my hair and then use the blow-dryer—I don’t even use a diffuser—to just let it do what it wants and create some natural waves. It’s almost like how your wet hair would dry if you stuck your head out of a car. Then I’ll use a hair oil or I also like using Oribe’s Supershine Moisturizing Cream ($52)—which is amazing—and that just puts it all into place and helps calm the frizz.

Aside from products, do you have any other interesting tips or rituals you swear by for keeping your hair healthy?

A scalp massage! I try to do that twice a month at least. It’s actually a very Indian thing, and it’s usually passed down from grandmothers to mothers to daughters. My grandmother used to do it to me when I was a teenager. She’d sit me down, and I used to hate it. I was just like Ugh, I don’t want oil in my hair, but she would insist, and I would sit between her knees while we were watching TV, and she would give me this oil massage. I really miss it, and now I make my mom or whoever is around me do it. I even made my mother-in-law do it for me once [laughs]. I like to use coconut oil—or a little bit of castor oil mixed in with the coconut oil—because it stimulates the blood circulation in your scalp. In my experience, it’s really helped encourage healthier hair growth. 

That actually segues into my next question because I was curious as to how your Indian heritage has impacted your approach to beauty. 

You know, it’s interesting because I’ve never really been able to make the distinction because it’s just who I am. I am such an amalgamation of everything I have been, which is the East and the West. I believe in the Western sciences; I believe in the Eastern practices that are more holistic and plant-based. I mean, when I was in my 20s, I would just put straight-up aloe vera on my face almost every day. So using nature and nature’s goodness on my skin and my body has definitely been something I’ve taken away from that part of me. 

Would anything about your beauty routine surprise people?

Ha, probably that it’s really simple! I get dressed in five minutes. When my best friends and I are getting dressed, I am the one who is waiting for them. I’ll be pacing outside of the door, and I’m just like Come on, guys. Come on. And they’re still curling their hair, and I’m just like Okay, I’m going to make us a drink. I spend so much time in the glam chair as part of my job that it’s just something I cannot do when I don't have to. 

I don't blame you! Okay, last question. What’s your Unfiltered beauty philosophy in seven words or less?

Okay, this is very '90s of me, but I would say, keep it simple. I think more is less. I did not know that when I was a teenager, and I would wear so much makeup. Even when I first started getting involved in the entertainment business, like, oh my gosh, did I learn a lesson! Now when I look back at those pictures, I’m just like what was the need? I am a big believer that less is more when it comes to beauty. There is something very chic and sophisticated about giving one feature a moment to shine. It can be the eyes, it can be the hair, it can be the dress, it can be the mouth. But giving one thing a moment instead of multiple is something that would really define my Unfiltered beauty philosophy.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm guilty of buying things for the sheer joy of it, but when it comes to sunglasses, I always think about practicality first. If you're anything like me, your black jeans are potentially the one item you wear the most out of your entire wardrobe. Now, there's nothing wrong with wearing and loving one particular item in your closet over and over again, but what I have found is that the more I wear my black jeans, the less creative I become in terms of styling them. I always fall back on the few lackluster looks I have notched in my belt instead of branching out and trying something new. Well, today, that's all going to change. 

I decided to do some celebrity outfit research to see how some of the stars have been styling their black jeans as of late. From Gigi to Priyanka, I was pleasantly surprised by the easy (but cool) looks I discovered. Most were black-jean outfits made up of items we probably all already have in our closets, but for the pieces we'll have to buy, I shopped them out for you here.

It's official: Spring is coming (cue collective sounds of rejoicing!). That means longer days and warmer temperatures are on the horizon. But what baffles me every year is that awkward period between winter and spring when it's not quite cold enough for all of your winter layers but also not quite warm enough for spring dresses and sandals. Not to mention the dramatic fluctuations of temps throughout the day—50s in the morning, 70 in the afternoon, 40s at night—it can make getting dressed beyond confusing.

That's why I decided to look to some of the best-dressed people on the planet (who also have a team of stylists behind their every move) for inspiration on what to wear during the awkward winter-to-spring transition. Celebs like Hailey Bieber and Priyanka Chopra have mastered the art of layering transitional pieces, and I plan on riding their coattails this year. Below are the six best winter-to-spring denim outfits I'll be copying from celebs (and highly suggest you do as well).

Hailey has the right idea with this casual yet cool look. Her leather trench coat will keep her warm during the colder times of day, but when the afternoon sun peeks out her sweater-and-jeans combo will keep feeling totally comfortable. Oh, and the baseball hat and sneakers are just a nice styling touch.

Now, this is one of the easiest looks to copy. Just grab your favorite short coat and throw it on over your sweater, add your wide-leg jeans and ankle boots and you're done. It's the perfect balance of casual yet put together. 

Gigi Hadid is putting all of those wardrobe staples in her closet to good use. She paired a printed blazer, chunky turtleneck, ripped jeans, and knee-high boots to create the perfect transitional outfit that we can all re-create using the version of these pieces we already own.

Kaia Gerber is one of those celebs who's full of outfit ideas that are relatively easy to re-create. Her laidback style always feels attainable (granted my shearling coat is not Loewe), and this look is no different. Take your favorite shearling coat and just add a breezy blouse, straight-leg jeans, and ankle boots.

This might be my favorite Katie Holmes look of all time. That fringe jacket is just so good. Here's another look you can probably re-create using pieces hanging in your closet. Take a suede shirt or jacket (or shacket, if you will) and throw it on over your favorite jeans and T-shirt. A leather shacket would also create the same vibe here, which given the trend's recent popularity you may already own.

Ever since Jennifer Lopez stepped onto the red carpet at the Grammy Awards in 2000, the plunging neckline on her now-iconic Versace dress has been one of the most memorable moments in fashion history. So memorable, in fact, that she's re-created the look multiple times in the years since. Tonight, a decade later at the same award show, we're seeing history repeat itself.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas arrived at tonight's 62nd Grammy Awards in a dress that bears a striking resemblance to J.Lo's 2000 number. I mean, I could list all the incredible things she did in the last decade: producing an iconic visual album, launching her apparel line, being the first black woman to headline Coachella and turning it into a record-breaking Netflix documentary—and we haven’t even gotten to any of the fire fits she served us with. But let’s be real, this singular look says it all.

And while some questioned (and continue to question) Meghan’s style choices from that day on, for many, as they tuned in to watch the royal nuptials, they realized that for the first time they could see themselves reflected in a Dutchess and her personal style.

Priyanka Chopra traveled from NYC to L.A. yesterday, and smartly wore black Paige skinny jeans and ankle boots to do so. I'd have to say that black skinny jeans just might trump all other skinny jeans, so there's that, but it was the ankle boot trend she wore with them that made the look feel very 2019. That trend is square-toe ankle boots, which bring a fresh '90s-inspired aesthetic to any outfit they're a part of, including Chopra's. Speaking personally, I'm obsessed with square-toe boots at the moment and think they're a great respite from all the sharp pointed-toe styles we've been seeing the last few years.

The Big Apple is currently hosting another New York Fashion Week, but as much as I love runway shows, the U.S. Open always has my full attention at this time of year. I've been known to sneak in tennis-related stories at every opportunity I get—but I'm far from the only fashion person who loves tennis. Meghan Markle and Anna Wintour are both attending the women's final match at the U.S. Open today to support Serena Williams, and both are seated in her player's box.
