Today, I had an experience that is very much the latter. It started with one Aligne jacket I kept seeing all over my Instagram feed, which then reminded me of a Leset top I saw once, and somehow, I ended with mentally rebuilding my entire summer wardrobe on Pixie Market.

In my earlier days, I always thought a high price point meant a quality product. As I've gotten older (and possibly more cynical), I've realized that's not the case at all. As much as we hate to admit it, we're all influenced by what we see on Instagram. I myself am not immune to its powers. I find myself saving outfits I want to re-create constantly, and I'll admit that occasionally I even save posts featuring items I want to come back to and purchase later. Thankfully for my bank account, the items I've been saving for the latter category recently have actually been relatively affordable. With the turn of every season, a crop of new trends pop up, and we're inundated with the temptation to try all of them. Since my bank account and closet space are limited, it's not feasible to actually test out every single trend each season, so I examine each one carefully and cherry-pick the ones that make the most sense for me. This way my outfits are directional without looking like Instagram threw up on me. Below I've highlighted the only two fall pieces I plan on buying this fall and why each one is a worthwhile investment among a sea of options. 

LEATHER SEPARATES

There's no question that this fall's biggest fabric is leather. We've seen it popping up in luxe separates of all kinds—from trench coats to skirts to dresses. A chic leather piece makes any outfit feel more elevated instantly, and adds a certain cool factor to even the most basic of looks. I'll be adding leather separates to my wardrobe this season to pair with everything from jeans to slip skirts. 

KNEE-HIGH BOOTS

Knee-high boots have become the top fall shoe style basically overnight, with fashion people leaning heavily into the boot and straight-leg jean outfit combo. The key to this trend is choosing a style that has a wider leg, and don't be afraid to wear them with everything from said straight-leg jeans to midi skirts to dresses. These are a timeless investment you'll wear for years to come.

I don't know about you, but I'm not a morning person. I also love to sleep, so let's just say that getting dressed for work in the morning is not easy for me. I wish I were one of those people who laid out their outfit the night before, but I'm not that on top of it—just doing my best over here! Given this, I had previously found myself putting together outfits that weren't my favorite and experiencing extremely stressful mornings as I try to get out the door.

Once I came to this realization (and accepted that this is just who I am), I decided to strategize and implement a plan not to change who I am but to work within those confines. I identified a few key pieces in my wardrobe that I always found myself reaching for when I needed to put an outfit together in a pinch, and invested deeper into them. This way, I have multiple options in the styles that are basically the backbone of my wardrobe. The number one item I find myself reaching for over and over again in the morning when I'm pressed for time is a chic blazer. I just throw it on top of my go-to jeans and T-shirt and all of a sudden my outfit looks polished, despite the fact it took me five seconds to put together. It's a fashion item you'll wear for years, making it one of the safest fashion investments you can make. Another building block of 99% of my outfits is always a good pair of jeans. Being tall is a blessing and a curse when it comes to shopping. I rarely have to get my jeans hemmed, but I also can't wear those up-to-there dresses and skirts that don't look quite as minuscule on shorter girls. When it comes to fall trends, there are styles that I'm super excited to wear, like head-to-toe leather, and others that are simply not made for me (hello, chunky lug-sole boots that make my size 10 feet look even bigger). 

Take, for instance, the voluminous dress trend. Our 5'4" editor Allyson says that the trend would swallow her whole, but those with taller frames have an easier time pulling off the oversize look—something I was more than happy to take advantage of during my recent trip to Copenhagen Fashion Week. In her fall 2019 starter pack story, Lauren mentioned that party minidresses will be huge for this season, but it won't be a trend I'll personally be trying. A minidress on most people is basically a blouse on my 5'10" frame, so I gravitate toward knee-length or midi dresses instead. Right now I'm specifically in love with voluminous iterations like Cecilie Bahnsen's cloud-like confections.

The numbers don't lie: According to The RealReal's data, Jacquemus's pint-sized Le Chiquito bag is still extremely coveted right now and can hold 89% of its value on the resale market. However, mini bags just seem ill-proportioned on my tall frame, so I'll be sticking to my favorite bag trend: crescent bags. Staud's brand-new Moon Bag, which I'm wearing below, was perhaps the impetus for the trend, but I also spotted a different brand's version at Copenhagen Fashion Week when I was there.

While they still serve as my main port of call for quick fashion fixes, lately, I've set about finding other purse-friendly labels to fill my wardrobes with. Winter has hit hard here in Sydney, and while we’re begrudgingly adapting to the weather by adding a few new coats to the rotation and investing in some weatherproof boots, our minds are admittedly elsewhere. Whenever I'm in need (or want, let's be honest) of a new top that won't cause great harm to my bank account, there's one e-tailer I turn to every single time: Pixie Market. Pretreat your clothes.

Whiting and Boyd recommend their Stain Solution and All-Purpose Bleach Alternative directly to affected areas of your clothes.

Use hot water, and scrub at the stains.

Using hot water to activate the solution, scrub at the stain. This way you’re working the solution into the fabric.

Presoak your clothes.

In a bath of hot water and the aforementioned All-Purpose Bleach Alternative, soak your items for at least one hour. Whiting and Boyd say it can sometimes take more than one try. “If the stain isn’t fully removed once the soaking is completed, don’t sweat it! It often it takes two to three tries before complete removal.”

Wash your clothes as normal.

Once you’ve gotten the stain out to your liking, wash your clothes as you normally would with detergent.
