I hadn’t traveled for pleasure alone in over two years since becoming a mom. Before that, it was something I did often; something that made me feel grounded, independent, me. Somewhere between routines, responsibilities, and pouring into everyone else, I realized I hadn’t poured into myself in a while. I refused to be a victim of "mom guilt," so I decided to take a solo retreat and be in nature. I chose Mountain Shadows Resort in Scottsdale as my destination. No expectations, no pressure … just space and touching grass (well, really it was, desert sand).

I didn’t go to "find myself." I just wanted to feel like myself again. Turns out, it’s the little things that brought me back. Here’s what helped this busy parent slow down.

Honestly, I sold myself a dream going into this. When I found out the hotel had "phone lock boxes" in each room, I thought that I would go completely off-grid. I did not get exactly there, but I landed somewhere close enough. I stopped reaching for my phone every quiet moment and let myself just be. At first, it felt uncomfortable—like I was missing something. Eventually, though, the noise in my head softened. I had a few check-ins with my family to make sure everything was running smoothly on the East Coast. I had a few meetings and work calls, but immediately after, I would turn my phone on airplane mode or lock it away. Which, as a NYC fashion mom who is self-employed, is abnormal.

Without constant scrolling, I started noticing more of my thoughts, my feelings, even the way time slowed down. It reminded me how disconnected I’d become from myself—from the present moment—without even realizing it.

One thing I set as an intention was that during this trip, I would give myself permission to receive instead of giving. Which is harder than it might seem, even though I am a Leo who loves to receive gifts, etc. My mind has been running a mile a minute, balancing an ever-growing and changing career, a growing and energetic toddler, a home and relationship that needs TLC too, not to mention my ongoing to-do list.

With all that to juggle, it can be hard to find clarity. When I found out the resort offers in-room reiki and sound bath through its Citizens Curator offerings, I booked immediately. I started with Goodnight Reiki on the first night. It was a 50-minute soothing meditation and Reiki session designed to ease overstimulation, reduce emotional overload, and prepare your body for true rest. I fell asleep during the session and stayed asleep through the night. I cannot tell you the last time I have had rest like that, or even slept through an entire night. On the last day of the trip, I ended it with a sound bath before dinner. The stillness of the sound bath felt like layers I didn’t know I was carrying started to loosen, and I got clarity on so many lingering questions.

I didn’t have some dramatic, life-altering revelation, but I did feel lighter, more open, clearer, and more powerful—like something shifted internally, even if I can’t fully explain it yet.

I'll admit that I'm guilty of not paying attention to what I am eating when I am busy. I either skip meals or eat what is in front of me, which is not always the healthiest. As someone who loves food and appreciates a fine-dining experience, I have not had time to treat myself to nice meals lately. There’s something different about eating when you’re actually present. No rushing, no multitasking; just nourishing my body with intention. So, I was intentional with what I ate on this trip. The open kitchen concept at Hearth ’61 was a great way to remind myself of the intention behind preparing meals and the care that goes into it, and made it even more satisfying to eat. I went a little heavy on the protein when ordering since that was stuck in my head from my last doomscroll before locking my phone away.

The experience of eating alone without rushing made me realize how often I treat meals like an afterthought. Slowing down reminded me that taking care of myself doesn’t have to be complicated—just consistent.

Along with taking the time to enjoy my meals, the art of going on solo dates with myself added to the experience. I got dressed up with nowhere to be but with myself, and somehow, that felt important. When I am not dressed up for work, I am in my neighborhood running errands and doing school pick-up like a troll (which was never my personality). Dressing up for me on this trip wasn’t about impressing anyone. It was not for a work event, to be on camera, or to have my picture taken. It was about reminding myself that I’m allowed to feel beautiful, confident, and seen, even when no one’s watching—especially then.

As most busy parents often struggle to find time to work out, I am not an outlier. The demanding schedule, the caregiving responsibilities, and my very limited personal time do not always allow me to fit in something that historically has been very important to me. Although I know exercise is important to my mental health, I still end up skipping workouts more often than not, and running around in this concrete jungle has me so out of touch with nature that I jumped at the chance to reconnect. I love hiking, and whenever I'm on the West Coast, I fit my hikes in. No headphones, no distractions—just me, my breath, and my steps. I was inspired to hike Camelback Mountain alone. I woke up at 5 a.m. and started my journey, and I finished. I thought I would get halfway up and turn around, but I did not, and I feel so grateful that I pushed myself.

Being in nature felt like a reset I didn’t know I needed. It gave me space to think and also space not to think. Both felt equally important.

There is something so healing about no background noise, no constant stimulation—just stillness. I didn’t realize how rarely things are truly quiet in my household, but also in NYC. I really wanted to take the time to sit with that stillness, to not feel the need to make a call, to listen to a podcast, or find myself doing busywork. I wanted to make sure I was able to take in this time alone and hear my thoughts. So I sat in nature, by the pool, ate alone, woke up early to meditate, and ended the evening by the firepit.

At first, the stillness felt unfamiliar. But eventually, it became comforting—like I was finally catching up with myself.

Doing things alone—and on purpose—is what has been missing for a while. Pre-motherhood, I had all the alone time I could desire: every coffee, every walk, most meals—it was just me.

That’s what this trip reminded me of, that feelings of enjoying your own company instead of feeling lonely; it felt intentional. I remembered that my own company is enough. More than enough, actually. None of this was extravagant or life-changing on the surface, but somehow, it changed something in me. I didn’t embark on this trip to come back as a new person; I just wanted to feel like a more connected version of who I already was.

And maybe that’s the real reset.

I have a list of children's fashion labels I turn to when sourcing cute clothing for my two-year-old daughter. And yes, Pink Chicken is one of my favorites. After the birth of my second daughter, I came back from maternity leave, and my first week back to reality was a business trip for an event. I started packing and couldn’t put any outfits together because I didn’t have the right shoes for what I was going for. In all honesty, coming back from maternity leave was hard enough, and then to feel like I couldn’t put a decent outfit together that felt good… (Real ones know!) Clothes strewn all over the floor, definitely crying, I vowed that I would be getting my shoe game together. I love clothes but have never been one to collect shoes; I've always being more partial to sweatersor jackets. My go-to has always been Birkenstock clogs thrown on in a pinch, but as I was determined to feel more put together, it was time to address what was missing: a lineup of shoes for work that I could count on. On top of that, working in New York City added a layer to the project: I wanted shoes that were cute and comfortable—that I could run around to meetings in but also feel like myself.

While I'm still very much on this journey, in searching the right shoes that can mix and match with multiple pieces, I found I could elevate what I was wearing and more easily get dressed in the morning. Being able to find some must-have classic styles has alleviated 75% of my stress in getting ready, and I’m not sure why I didn’t have this realization sooner. Ahead, my current roundup for winter.

Flat, Brown (Semi-Pointy) Boots

Dare I say these Tony Bianco boots saved me (dramatic, I know!). Having a brown boot that is flat but still chic in a chocolate brown suede has been the biggest upgrade to my wardrobe. Easy to throw on under jeans or peek out of trousers, it goes great with any color and makes me feel instantly put together.

Adidas Sneakers

Nothing has saved me more on a rainy day than a variety of Adidas sneakers that don’t make an outfit feel too casual, as you can dress up appropriately. It is now becoming a problem that I can never have enough sneakers.

Thick-Soled Boots

A friend recommended these chunky Alexander McQueen ones, and at first opposed, I’ve come to see the magic in their ways. Good for winter weather but still elevated, they are comfortable and have been my go-to on many a snow day trekking into the city. Depending on what color suits you, there’s a variety of black or brown boots that would fit any need. A good alternative is Blundstone’s, which I wear often on the weekend.

Loafers

There is nothing more necessary than a chunky loafer, and a comfortable one at that. Wear socks in winter and still be good for work. Pair with sweaters, or a button-down, you can't go wrong. I cannot recommend these enough with their buttery smooth leather.

Square-Toe Ballet Flats

Perhaps controversial, but one of my favorite new core items is a square-toe ballet flat. I find the rounded toe to be too specific of a look, whereas this shape can be dressed up or down. These black Margaux ones are beyond comfortable (size a half-size down), and I have a suede brown Mansur Gavriel pair that are divine. Either way, my notion that all ballet flats are uncomfortable was completely wrong, and they look adorable with dresses or jeans for the office.

Black Mules

Forget the little black bag. The little black mule! These have saved me more times than I can count, and they go with everything.

Booties

If you need a flat boot, it only makes sense that you would also need a heeled boot. There are some days that you need that extra lift to fake it until you make it, and you need the right shoes for the job. I prefer a little bit of a chunkier heel, but there are a variety of different options depending on what your vibe is.

Shearling Flats

My favorite item for years has been the Birkenstock shearling clog, so I’ve made it my mission to find shearling flats that could be an elevated swap in for work days.

More Sneakers

We already know comfort is key, and therein lies the power of the dad sneaker. New Balance makes a variety of styles that I live in, and they are my other go-to option on inclement-weather days when I need to get out of the house and get going fast. Or throw them on as your commuter sneaker and change when you get to the office.

Now that it's winter, getting dressed to make it into the city for work has a fun new challenge: braving the cold while looking put-together. But voilà, I have sweaters. I've amassed quite a collection over the years, but as I've worked hard to ensure that everything in my wardrobe is something I love and can mix and match with other items I own, I've come to appreciate certain styles over others.

Every fall, as I plan for the months ahead, I take inventory of the pieces I have, shed what doesn't work for me anymore, and make a list of what's missing so that I always have one that works. The best thing about sweaters is that there are different styles to fit the mood—polished, laid-back, elevated, neutral, and a variety of prints that make getting dressed in the winter fun. The Cotton Sweater

A cotton sweater is lighter than wool or cashmere but extremely comfortable to throw on over a T-shirt and weather the day ahead. (Pun intended.) My current go-to is Honest Cotton's white pullover, but there is a variety of neutral-tone cotton sweaters that can be everyday pieces.

The Cardigan

I was against the cardigan for a long time until I realized the power of wearing a cardigan like a top. Unlike other sweaters that need to be layered, there is a certain type of cardigan that offers a polished look while keeping you warm in the office.

The V-Neck Sweater

I swore off V-necks entirely until I realized all that was missing was a T-shirt layered underneath. It is the perfect item to feel cozy in or elevated in with the right trousers. I have lost count of the number of times I've thrown on this Jenni Kayne sweater to feel put-together.

The Fair Isle Sweater

My favorite alter ego is the one where I am snowed in, in a cabin in the woods, so any way that I can incorporate a Fair Isle sweater into my wardrobe daily is a plus for me. Cozy and chic.

A brown sweater, specifically with texture, always pulls through.

The Striped Sweater

When I want to make a statement without being over-the-top, stripes are my favorite to utilize. Whether it's a cropped style or a button-down, they offer that little bit of something extra to pull the outfit together.

What's better than a plaid shirt? A plaid cashmere shirt. Need I explain more?

It's 8 a.m. My son has the flu and has just thrown up on his dad as he heads out the door for work. I'm two weeks behind on a deadline, chasing invoices that need to be paid before the year wraps, and mentally sorting through an impossible list. I need to send new pitches, finally face the project I've been procrastinating on, follow up on unpaid work, pick up groceries and medication, prepare lines for my next TV segment… or completely disconnect, crawl back into bed, and cuddle my sick child while binge-watching a series.

Mornings like this can feel isolating, especially when I scroll through Instagram and see "rock-star" moms launching businesses, collecting accolades, and landing on lists like Forbes 40 Under 40. That feeling began to shift when I started connecting with other mothers more intentionally. I found a community of women with similar ambitions who, like me, are trying to define what balance really means while building businesses and raising families. Those conversations became a community and reminded me that I'm part of a growing wave of women redefining success, structure, and self-expression through entrepreneurship. I spoke with eight women who are building companies and raising families on their own terms—not perfectly but powerfully.

What I discovered is a generational shift: Modern motherhood looks and feels different. The freedom to define motherhood on our own terms has emerged not just from desire but also from necessity. The once-clear separation between work and family has blurred, perhaps accelerated by COVID and the rise of working from home, but the change is undeniable. We are entering a new ethos of integration, one that allows for greater vulnerability in the workplace and more honesty about the flexibility required to even attempt to have it all.

Mandela Cocores, founder of Welcome Home, shares that flexibility has been the most meaningful change: "Having a flexible schedule means I can actually attend my kids' school events without feeling like I need to apologize to a boss for missing a couple of hours of work." Ingrid Best of IBest Wine echoes this shift, noting how it has shaped her leadership. "Motherhood has deeply influenced how I lead. It's made me more empathetic and more human-centered. I approach work with the understanding that we're all people first—each navigating our own experiences," she says. These women are visionaries in their own right, and what follows are key insights into how they're making it work.

The Legacy Builder

Denise Woodard, Founder and CEO of Partake Foods

Denise Woodard is the founder and CEO of Partake Foods, an allergy-friendly snack brand inspired by her daughter Vivienne's food allergies. Based in Los Angeles, Woodard built Partake after discovering how few safe and delicious options existed for families like hers. What began with three cookie flavors has grown into a national brand sold in over 18,000 stores, including Target, Whole Foods Market, and Kroger. The business was born from deeply personal circumstances. After multiple emergency-room visits when Vivienne was just 1 year old, Woodard began baking at home, won a local pitch competition, and built Partake on nights and weekends while working full-time at Coca-Cola. A year later, she left her job—emptying her 401(k), selling her engagement ring, and delivering cookies from the back of her car to fulfill early orders.

Her favorite part of the journey is seeing how entrepreneurship has shaped her daughter's view of what's possible. "She's grown up watching 'mommy's cookies' appear on grocery shelves, tagging along to events, trade shows, and in-store demos and even playing store and selling things to her friends at the park. I love seeing her entrepreneurial spirit come out!" she says. Like many founders, Woodard faced moments of doubt. "There have been many small moments rather than one dramatic one—late nights alone in my car after a demo or sitting at the kitchen table staring at spreadsheets [and] wondering how we'd make the next production run happen and still be present for Vivienne," she says. "Initial fundraising was one of the toughest stretches. After the 80th investor 'no,' it was hard not to take it personally and ask myself if I was crazy for pushing so hard." Still, she kept going. "I knew I could never look my daughter in the eye if I quit just because it got hard," she adds.

Her advice: "Use motherhood as an asset, not a liability. Motherhood has sharpened my crisis-management skills, my ability to stretch resources, and my long-term thinking, all of which are essential for building a company. Treat the skills you build at home as the advanced training they are."

The Caregiver

Mandela Cocores, Founder and Chef of Welcome Home

Cocores is the founder and chef behind Welcome Home, a meal-delivery service designed to support new parents during postpartum recovery. The idea was born after she realized how unprepared she was following the birth of her first son, Rye. While she felt strong and confident during pregnancy, postpartum left her depleted—largely due to a lack of proper nourishment. Determined not to repeat that experience after her second son, Lennon, she began researching what the body truly needs to recover and was surprised to find nothing like it existed. Welcome Home grew from that gap.

Motherhood has fundamentally changed how Cocores defines success. "I used to measure success by titles, hours worked, and how intensely involved I was in a corporate setting," she says. "Now, success is measured by impact and presence. It means that I only want to be in work environments or creating work that I believe in deeply. If it isn't something I am willing to work hard in and something that serves a true purpose (like giving parents the gift of nourishing recovery), then it is not worth leaving my kids for." Like many founders, she questioned everything in the early days. "The entire first year, I questioned it every single day. I cried every single day. I wore sweatpants every single day. I couldn't get out of them because they were my comfort blanket. I was truly just so scared and afraid of failing," she explains. A moment of tough love from her mother shifted everything, and she had a revelation when her mother said, "Then quit. If you are going to cry every single day and say how hard it is, then quit." Cocores says, "The thought of quitting and going back to corporate made me so angry. That was it. I was like, 'No. I am going to stop crying, and I am going to do this!'"

How motherhood has reshaped her: "The person I was two years ago, I don't even recognize [them], and I thought that person was pretty cool before! But this new version of myself—the one who built a business from the ground up while raising two boys—is infinitely more powerful and capable. Trust that the process of motherhood has already prepared you to be resilient, resourceful, and ready for reinvention."

The Digital Disruptor

Jessel Taank, Founder of Oushq and Cast Member of The Real Housewives of New York City

Jessel Taank founded Oushq after a familiar frustration. She was constantly asked "Where's that from?" about pieces she wore from designers across South Asia and the Middle East. Despite the abundance of extraordinary talent creating editorial, fashion-forward work, much of it wasn't accessible in the U.S. market. Oushq was created to bridge that gap, connecting global designers with Western consumers who value craftsmanship and seek something beyond the mainstream. Since launching, the platform has partnered with the CFDA, a major milestone in establishing credibility for the designers it represents.

For Taank, the work is deeply personal. "[I'm] showing my children what it looks like to build something meaningful. I want them to see that you can honor your cultural identity and turn it into something powerful rather than shrinking yourself to fit in," she says. Building Oushq while filming RHONY and raising young children pushed Taank to her limits. "There was a point where I thought, 'This is actually impossible,'" she says. What carried her forward was a clear sense of purpose. "I grew up trying to fit in, and I built this specifically so the next generation doesn't have to hide the beautiful parts of who they are," she continues. "When you're clear on the mission, you find the stamina." She also credits being "ruthlessly honest about what can wait and what can't."

Her advice: "Don't wait for perfect conditions—they don't exist. Start messy. Also, build something you genuinely care about because you'll need that passion when things get difficult, which they will."

Motherhood has sharpened her perspective and grounded her sense of purpose. "Now that I'm a mom, I know in the back of my mind that there's a payoff for everything. My sense of perspective is as sharp as it's ever been. I know I'll be wrong sometimes or look back and think I should have made a different move, but it feels great to know that I'm doing my very best and that that's good enough," she says. Her guiding principle is simple but powerful: "My mantra is 'Set your tone.' We don't become moms to play by someone else's rules. We are all worthy of deciding what's best for ourselves and our families. Even if we don't know exactly how to approach something, whether it's a family scenario or a business decision, we should have confidence in our values and our intention, which can take us far."

How motherhood has reshaped her: "Motherhood has taught me how to say no. I want to be everything to my family, which means I can't be everything to everyone else. My circle has gotten smaller, but everyone still in it understands this."

The Creative Storyteller

Seema Bansal Chadha, Cofounder and Creative Lead of Venus et Fleur

Seema Bansal Chadha is the cofounder and creative lead of Venus et Fleur, a luxury floral brand born from a moment of frustration. In 2015, a Valentine's Day delivery went wrong when the flowers ordered looked nothing like the photos, highlighting a lack of transparency in the floral industry. Determined to create something reliable, elevated, and honest, Bansal Chadha and her partner introduced Eternity florals, laying the foundation for a global brand centered on celebrating life's most meaningful moments through quality and craftsmanship.

Her days begin with a grounding morning ritual—getting her son, Windsor, ready for school and making his lunch. After drop-off, her focus shifts to creative direction, campaign reviews, product development, and team meetings. Some days are immersed in design and storytelling, others in operations and problem-solving. Through it all, she prioritizes moments of calm, whether through journaling, coffee or tea, a Pilates class, a sauna session, or a quiet pause before moving on to the next thing. Her favorite part of building a business as a mother is the legacy it creates. "Watching Windsor grow up around creativity, travel, and entrepreneurship, I'm hopeful it will teach him he can do anything he wants to do in life if he's willing to work hard and lead with passion," she says. "It makes the work feel deeper and more meaningful. Everything feels tied to legacy now." During challenging moments, she stays anchored in purpose and trust. "What got me through was remembering why I'm building this, leaning on Sunny, trusting my team, and having a sense of faith that things always rebalance and work out," she says.

Her advice: "Protect your energy. Get help where you can. Don't compare your pace to anyone else's. Your timeline is your own, and motherhood can make your vision even sharper."

The Accessible Visionary

Kahlana Barfield Brown, Founder of KBB by Kahlana

Kahlana Barfield Brown is the founder of KBB by Kahlana, a new clothing brand she launched this fall after years in fashion publishing as a beauty editor at InStyle. That experience revealed clear gaps in the market and inspired her to build a brand rooted in quality, style, and inclusivity—designed for women of all sizes at an accessible price point. Her favorite part of building the business as a mother is the example she's setting for her daughters. "[I'm] able to show my daughters that they can do whatever they set their minds to. This week, my youngest, who loves fashion, came to work with me. We had a shoot for our spring collection, and she was like a kid in a candy store. It's cool to see them excited about what I do and to know I'm setting an example for them," she says.

The most challenging part has been the travel. "I've been doing it for work my whole career, but now that I'm a mom, it's tough to be away from my family," she explains. Launching the brand came with moments of doubt, especially given the broader political and economic climate. "Launching a brand this year was definitely a moment where I had to question if I could handle it all," she says. "With everything going on in the world politically and economically, it felt like the odds were against me. But I was raised to finish what I start, so I pushed through." She's candid about the reality of juggling it all and the importance of support: "It's a lot to juggle, and you won't have it all down right away. Trust your gut and lean on your people when you need to."

How motherhood has reshaped her: "Motherhood gave me my why. When I was young in my career, it was all about climbing the ladder and working my way up the masthead. My definition of success has shifted to creating something I'm proud of, helping others, and building something my kids can look up to."

Across all of these women, the themes are clear: reinvention, flexibility, and redefining what productivity and success really mean. Again and again, they spoke about starting before feeling ready. As Lang shared, "Start where you are. You don't need to have it all figured out. Just begin with what's real and meaningful to you." Woodard reinforced something many of us forget in the chaos—that our children are watching, even when we don't realize it. She sees it in her daughter, who has "grown up watching 'mommy's cookies' appear on grocery shelves … and even playing store and selling things to her friends at the park." What these stories make clear is that the hustle is never as effortless as it looks. Building something meaningful takes dedication, sacrifice, and the courage to define balance on your own terms. There is no single way to do this—only the way that works for you, your family, and the life you're building.

I’ve been in the fashion industry for 10+ years with a closet full of clothes busting at the seams. Yet no amount of clothes could have prepared me for having to get ready with the limited amount of time allotted with two littles at home. Suddenly, my leisurely routine of 45 minutes to an hour to get ready is now dwindled down to a meager five minutes to get dressed and head out the door.

I’ve tried a few different ways to organize my life as a commuting mom since my second daughter was born, and "winging it" always left me feeling disheveled, discombobulated, and not prepared. There’s nothing like feeling good in your outfit, making it out the door on time for your train, and working a full day in the city to make you feel like you are in fact superwoman—supermom. Herein, I am ready to reveal the outfit folder.

I’ve found myself sneaking away for little pockets of time, after the girls go to bed (revenge bedtime), to sort through my closet to find outfits to store away in an organized folder for different work scenarios so I am prepared for the morning. The coordination ranges through a variety of different styles: rainy-day commuting woman, elevated working mom, comfy cute, and even business chic. Organizing these outfits into this folder has given me the preparation (i.e., sanity) to get ready in the five minutes I have.

Some of my most cherished items are the ones that are essential to my favorite outfit recipes. They are the items that always work in a bind and magically mesh with almost everything else that I already have in my closet. Silk trousers, button-downs, that perfect crisp denim. Then there’s a suede jacket, the perfect layering T-shirt, and beige, beautiful sweaters. The list goes on, but I rounded up some core favorites in my rotation. They are my hero pieces that have made getting ready as a commuting mom of two not only bearable but, dare I say, enjoyable.

Striped Button-Down Shirt

This item has saved me more times than I can count. Open with a T-shirt over jeans, closed over silk pants, styled with the bump when pregnant. Although I have a few favorite variations, it’s that item that always works in a bind and always makes you feel a bit more put together.

Black Pull-On Pants

One of the core items I’ve come to fully understand: the black pull-on pants. There are one hundred different variations of this style available for women to shop from now, but my all-time favorite in rotation right now are the La Ligne Colby pants. Wear with sneakers when it's raining or boots to elevate—it always works.

Suede Jacket

Not until this year did I realize the power of a suede jacket. Cons: cannot wear in inclement weather. Pros: instantly upgrades an outfit.

Cardigan Set

What is better than an outfit that’s basically done once you put it on? Nothing. Voilà, the cardigan set. Instantly chic and always comfortable, they come in all different fabrics and styles and are always my go to when I need to look polished but want to also be comfortable.

My biggest shopping problem and my most-worn item weekly: denim jeans. It takes some time to hunt for the right fit for your body type, but I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a classic straight leg.

And to pull it altogether, the mini bag. I love having a mini that I can pull out for a meeting or out-of-office appointment but fits within my tote that I schlep all my things to the city with.

Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about where I shop for him and what brands I’m loving right now. Its collections balance playful patterns with clean essentials, so I can grab a few pieces and create multiple looks. I love layering H&M’s tees under hoodies or pairing them with jeans for school days; it’s effortless and keeps him comfortable all day. Its sustainability efforts also make me feel good about what I’m bringing into our home.

On a warm, sunny day in September, I'm meeting Justine Lupe at a podcast studio in downtown Los Angeles. She arrives wearing the classic mom uniform: a button-down and jeans. But there's something cool and unstudied about her take. The crisp baby-blue Courrèges top, the perfectly-worn-in jeans, and the unbothered kitchen clogs make the whole look feel refreshingly unforced. Before the cameras roll, she admits she needs mom friends and asks where I live. I tell her Laurel Canyon. She responds, "Too far." Alas. Even if you've only known Lupe for 15 minutes, you understand she's magnetic, warm, and—above all—authentic, and you definitely want to be her mom friend.

I kick off the interview noting Lupe's return for the highly anticipated second season of Netflix's Nobody Wants This and declare it an exciting moment for us. Awkward. I have nothing to do with the show. Mercifully, she laughs, "Thank you for being excited on my behalf." My accidental overstep hints at the dedicated fandom surrounding the breakout rom-com; everyone I know is highly invested. Indeed, when Netflix released the trailer, the comments shared a similar sentiment: "Literally everyone wants this."

If you're just tuning in, Lupe plays Morgan, the quick-witted younger sister to Kristen Bell's Joanne. The story is anchored by Joanne's roller-coaster interfaith love story with a "hot rabbi," Adam Brody, and Morgan delivers the no-filter hot takes and dry humor that make their sister dynamic one of TV's most relatable. This new season comes with some notable upgrades, signaling increased investment: New guest stars like Leighton Meester join the mix ("so sweet and friendly," Lupe says, "but also so funny and goofy"), and behind the scenes, Girls alumni Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan are on board as showrunners. "They really wanted to give the audience what they loved about last season," Lupe tells me. "It carries over beautifully, but there's new stuff too. It expands into something different."

Nobody Wants This is Lupe's largest role to date, and the celebrated show was nominated for three Emmys earlier this year. (Lupe was a vision in a sheer Carolina Herrera dress for the awards show). Nearly 15 years out of Juilliard, she has built a career on smart, quietly powerful performances, including Succession's Willa Ferreyra, the escort-turned-fiance of the eldest son Connor Roy, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Astrid Weissman, an earnest Jewish convert married to Midge Maisel's brother. Last year, though, she took on her most transformative role yet: motherhood.

Lupe's matrescence has arced across filming both seasons of Nobody Wants This. In the first season, it was pregnancy. "I started the job right at the end of my first trimester," she explains. "It was divine intervention in a real way because I felt like I had mono through my first trimester. I could not get up." Enter the second trimester, a shift of tides as Lupe felt reinvigorated, experiencing a "renaissance moment—birds are singing." She chuckles as she reveals one of the biggest challenges was a burrito baby. "I would eat a burrito, and then everything would just pop open. My skirt would just be on the ground, and I'd be like, 'Oh no, I'm expanding past the capacity of my clothes,'" she says. Lupe mentions the unsung heroes of the season: the costume department, who offered steadfast generosity while having to frequently refit her changing body.

I ask Lupe what she thinks isn't discussed enough with new parenthood, and she answers definitively: the hormonal shift when weaning. When filming the second season, Lupe's milk production quickly shut down, causing a drastic swing in hormones. She explains, "I had crazy anxiety. It was a little bit scary. I felt a different thing than I'd ever felt—sad, anxious. My body was totally out of control, and my brain didn't understand what was going on. I didn't have any postpartum depression. But this was real, and I didn't know anything about it." The symptoms lasted over two months, long enough to wonder if this is the "new you." When Lupe started to share with her network, some of her friends realized in retrospect that it had happened to them too, finally having a "why" for this dark period of the postpartum journey.

Most new moms would agree that the aftershocks of postpartum aren't spoken about enough. You may get whispers and shadows of an idea, but "there's just no preparation possible for the impact of what that is after giving birth," admits Lupe. "It's this hugely steep learning curve," even when you have incredible women guiding your path. She adds, "I lucked out, in that I got to experience Sarah Snook being pregnant all through Succession season 4 and see what she could do. I think there's something psychosomatic about knowing someone can do that kind of work. It's like an expander." When Lupe became pregnant, Snook stepped up again. "She gave me some really great podcasts to listen to for the fourth trimester, which is postpartum, and when postpartum came, she checked in on me. She was really helpful in terms of being like, 'You have nine months of pregnancy, and you're gonna get so much information about being a pregnant woman, and people forget about what happens after you give birth,'" she says. I can confirm: A postpartum woman never forgets who shows up for her. Snook wasn't the only mom Lupe mentions. She says, "KB (Kristen Bell) just has a maternal air about her. She always has snacks, and she's always giving advice and has an article that she just read."

These connections between women who have been there and those just stepping through the doorway into motherhood form their own kind of quiet lineage. Still, society overall hasn't entirely caught up. Admittedly, we've come a long way from when Desi Arnaz had to battle execs to include Lucille Ball's pregnancy in an I Love Lucy plotline, as even the word "pregnant" was considered too explicit for television. Lupe had a markedly positive experience sharing her pregnancy on set ("all the execs were cheering me on," she shares, "and it was a really warm reception"), but at the same time, she notes there are still norms toward obscurity. "It's funny that it's something that's so part of our life. It's so intrinsic to us all being here, and yet it's secretive," she says. I have a hunch that, for her, keeping a massive life milestone in the shadows is not an option. The thing about Lupe is she is disarmingly, unapologetically candid, and I think it's part of her magic.

Our conversation takes a turn toward the unfiltered when I ask Lupe about her parenting "ick," and she regales me with a story: "We were in the bath together, and she farted. I was like, 'Oh, that smells bad.' I turned around to adjust the water temperature in the bath, and then I turned back, and—this might be TMI—she had a poop in her hand that she was putting in her mouth. I just saw a human being eat poop. I was like, 'Tyson, you need to get on the computer. Do all the research. Are we okay?' I was trying to wash her mouth. It was terrible, terrible." I think most new parents have a poop story, but this one feels exceptionally, ahem, memorable. Lupe continues, simultaneously laughing and grimacing, "I eat things that she'll spit out, food that she's not interested in. It's gross. I've turned into a rat. Motherhood has turned me into a rat." I briefly consider that "Rat Mom" merch could be fun and then commiserate, offering that sometimes eating the chewed food is easier than walking it over to the trash can. We then go on to talk about the satisfaction of using a SnotSucker, which is a tool that is exactly what it sounds like, and picking our children's noses. I think to myself, "God forbid a woman have hobbies!" It's official: In motherhood, egos have died, standards are low, and thresholds for gross are high. Beneath the humor, we're actually talking about a distinct identity shift. The glossy modern human makes space for the ancient animal instinct underneath.

A forced connection to your animal self is indeed a hallmark element of nascent motherhood. It is neither polite nor refined; it's natural and real. Lupe offers a snippet of her birth story, "I had a weird moment when I had her, where she came out and was covered in blood. I had this primal sensation that I felt like a lion or something, where I wanted to lick her head. I didn't do it, but I thought, 'That's an interesting impulse.'" The curious thing about this conversation is that Lupe is a public figure, and she's talking to the press (me) on the record (including video) about things that could be misconstrued or considered unflattering. It's clear she prioritizes the opportunity for authentic human connection—media training be damned. She's fearless and vulnerable and likely keeps her PR team on their toes.

We end our chat with a bit of a palate cleanser, pivoting away from bodily substances to legacy and impact. Lupe's hopes seem to bypass the typical human trappings of wanting to be remembered, to have done something that mattered in a grand way. "I want to be someone who is kind and brings people joy and levity and connection. I want to feel that I have witnessed my daughter, husband, and friends, that I was there for people that I love," she says. It's a humble aspiration, but when you consider that Lupe's presence is not just experienced in person but also beamed into millions of homes across the world, her effect is multiplied.

"My aunt sent me a text saying that her friend shared that while she was in the hospital she watched the show," Lupe tells me. "It brightened my day just to bring some sort of an escape or some sort of lightness to people's lives." I share a similar story—I recently asked my pregnant friend if she had her postpartum comfort shows lined up for the newborn bubble, and she noted that her plan was to watch season 2 of Nobody Wants This. Lupe lights up, "It's so nice to hear when someone just needs a little bit of levity that they turn to the show. Even if it's a fleeting thing and not like 100 years from now, people are going to be watching the show. It's nice to be part of any kind of blip of light."

It's Lupe's light, refreshing honesty, and connection to others that make her singular. While most of the world shrinks at the thought of being perceived, Lupe seems to invite, "Perceive me—the real me." It turns out the real her is a force.

I've learned to be fully present in whichever role I'm in."

How does it feel to be where you are now? Was it always your dream to juggle motherhood and business?

From walking the world's biggest runways to building Brunel, my beauty brand rooted in luxury and mood-enhancing self-care, and most importantly becoming a mother, each chapter has been more fulfilling than I could have planned.

Tell me what work/life balance looks like to you. How do you juggle parenting and having a successful career?

I do not believe in perfect balance. It is more like a dance. Some days my work demands more of me; other days my daughter does. I have learned to be fully present in whichever role I am in at that moment. I build my schedule with intention, whether it is a Brunel product meeting or bath time, and I give myself permission to slow down when I need to.

Do you feel like becoming a parent has changed the way you approach your career?

Absolutely. Becoming a mom has given me so much perspective. I'm more selective about the projects I take on because my time feels so much more precious. I want to make sure whatever I'm working on is truly fulfilling and worth being away from my daughter.

If you could give advice to the version of you that was fully in her single era and not yet a parent, what would it be?

Travel more, say yes to spontaneous adventures, and invest in yourself without hesitation. I loved my single era because it shaped my independence. I would tell her to build as many experiences as possible before life becomes more rooted.

You're working on a lot of fun projects right now, but what would be the dream next step in your career?

I am deeply focused on growing Brunel into a globally recognized brand, not only in beauty but as part of a complete lifestyle. Over the past few years, I have also been quietly investing in brands that inspire me, which is a part of my life most people do not know about. It has given me a new creative outlet and a chance to support ideas I believe in. I would love to dip back into the fashion world as well. Returning to the runway would be such an exciting full-circle moment. Acting is something I have often thought about too. Although, it requires the time and focus to commit fully to the demanding pace of auditions.

Define your personal style right now in three words.

Effortless, elevated, timeless.

Where does your incredible sense of style come from?

From my mother, who has an impeccable eye, and from years of being immersed in fashion. Working with some of the world's top designers refined my understanding of fit, fabric, and proportion.

How has your style evolved since the beginning of your career to now?

In the early days, I experimented more. Now I gravitate toward clean lines, neutral palettes, and pieces that will look just as beautiful 10 years from now.

Does your daughter ever comment on your personal style? Any funny or sweet anecdotes?

She's still little, but she's already so observant. Sometimes when I'm getting dressed, she'll just point and smile at my shoes or grab at my jewelry. It's the sweetest little reminder that she's noticing everything.

Does your daughter enjoy fashion and getting dressed already?

Yes! She loves picking between two outfits if I hold them up. She always gets this proud little look when she makes her "choice." I try not to go overboard, but it's so much fun dressing her in mini versions of some of my favorite styles.

Has motherhood shifted the way you shop or the types of clothes you gravitate toward?

Definitely. Comfort has become so important, especially pieces I can move around in easily when I'm with her. But I still love looking polished, so I've found myself gravitating toward elevated basics and timeless staples that are easy to mix and match.

Is there a piece in your closet that your daughter already loves playing with or asking about?

She's obsessed with my handbags. Any time I leave one on the floor, she immediately crawls over to play with it. I think she just loves opening and closing them, hopefully not a sign of an early handbag obsession!

What's your favorite dress or top to show off your new body oil in?

I love a strapless dress because it highlights a beautifully glowing décolletage. It catches the light perfectly when I am wearing Brunel Golden Hour Glow Oil.

If you could only shop one brand for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

Khaite. Understated luxury that always feels right.

Which of your iconic red carpet looks would you want to be remembered by?

My 2025 Met Gala look. It felt powerful yet feminine and perfectly captured the balance of strength and elegance I love.

If you could trade closets with one celebrity just for a day, who would it be?

Princess Diana. Her style was classic, confident, and eternally inspiring.

Your makeup looks are all over my Pinterest boards. Where do you find inspiration for your glam?

From travel, editorial photography, and makeup artists I have worked with over the years. I love subtle, skin-first beauty, and I feel like I have mastered my face shape very well. I also feel like playing with deep brown tones never goes out of style. Think '90s-esque beauty. It's made a recent comeback, and I truly feel it's a timeless look.

I've also always known you for your incredibly healthy-looking hair. Any treatments or products you swear by?

Regular hydrating treatments, minimal heat styling, and a silk pillowcase. I also believe in scalpcare as much as skincare. I have also always loved keratin treatments and will do them twice a year.

What's one piece in your closet you'd like to pass down to your children someday?

Oh, this is tough! Maybe one of my first Hermès bags. They just really stand the test of time and work so well with every outfit. My daughter loves carrying them around the house.

What was the experience like creating your dream home?

It was deeply personal. Every detail was chosen with both beauty and function in mind. I wanted it to feel like a sanctuary where I can recharge after a full day.

What makes the interior-design aspect of it special?

It is a reflection of my travels, with neutral tones, organic textures, and statement pieces that tell a story.

Are there any special pieces in your home that everyone should covet?

I think finding a good piece of art that makes you happy and inspires you. I have the first art piece that I bought by Rose Wylie, and every time I see it, it brings me those feelings.

Do you have any favorite household products that make juggling life at home easier as mom?

A well-organized pantry and beautifully scented candles. They make even the busiest days feel more calm.

You recently collaborated with Downy Unstopables. What inspired that collaboration?

Fragrance has always been a passion for me, both in fashion and beauty. Partnering with Downy to create a high-end take on laundry felt like the perfect way to elevate everyday rituals into moments of luxury.

You're always on the road. What's the one hotel that feels like a home away from home?

Any Aman property. They're always structurally beautiful, intimate, neutral toned, and feel like a dream.

What's your favorite restaurant in your home city?

I'm going to sound so L.A. here, but Nobu Malibu. Consistently delicious and the view is so dreamy! I also love the drive down PCH to get there.

If you could get a vacation home anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Tuscany, Italy! For the delicious food and wine tasting!

Do you have a favorite family ritual like a Sunday recipe or movie night?

Sunday mornings are my favorite. We usually make pancakes together, and it's such a sweet, slow start to the week. I really treasure that little family time before the busyness of Monday.

In what ways do you see your child taking after you already?

She's already showing so much personality. She's very determined and independent, which feels very familiar to me. And she's a total people person, just like Juan and I.

Any parenting podcasts, books, or resources that you've found genuinely helpful?

I really liked Bringing Up Bébé. It gave me a fresh perspective on slowing down and enjoying the little moments. I also love listening to short parenting podcasts when I have time in the car. They help me feel less alone in figuring it all out.

What songs would make up your dream playlist?

Most of my playlists are filled with Rüfüs Du Sol. Any time I hear one of their songs, it immediately takes me to a calm and happy place.

Any binge-worthy shows lately?

I have to say I love reality TV. I love the Real Housewives franchise.

Where do you gather inspiration for your work?

From travel, I pay a lot of attention to textures, tones, the way people move throughout their lives.

Any podcasts we should be listening to?

Diary of a CEO. I just love the topics and guests he has on his show. Love learning about different entrepreneurs journeys. Emma Grede's podcast as well—a good mix of business strategy and inspiring personal stories.

Any good reads?

The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav. It is about living with purpose, aligning with your soul, and creating authentic power, which is something I try to bring into every area of my life.

What's the parenting advice you don't believe in?

That you have to follow a rigid "rule book." Every child is so different, and what works for one might not work for another. I've learned to trust my instincts more than anything else.

What's the best piece of parenting advice you have received?

To be present. It's so easy to get caught up in work or on your phone, but these moments are so fleeting. Just putting everything down and soaking in time with her has been the best advice.

One etiquette rule everyone should abide by?

Always send a thank-you note, handwritten when possible.

Your love language?

Quality time. Being fully present is the greatest gift.

What do you wish you knew earlier in your career?

That "no" is just redirection.

Something overrated and something underrated?

Overrated: wearing something just because it is "in" rather than because it makes you feel confident.

Underrated: truly taking the time to moisturize head to toe, which is why I created Brunel.

Your least favorite fashion trend?

Anything that sacrifices elegance for shock value.

The best gift to give and to receive?

To give: a personalized and meaningful piece they will keep forever. To receive: time, whether it is a weekend getaway or an afternoon without distractions.

What's one thing you want your children to grow up knowing that you didn't?

That self-worth is not tied to external validation. I want them to understand their value is intrinsic and to embrace their individuality with confidence.

When I think about the toys that bring the most joy in our household, they're the ones that are memory makers and create fun rituals for us as a family—items that are always a pleasure to bring out and act as a catalyst for spending more time together. Here's what I know: Traveling with kids is not easy, and if I could add an expletive to that phrase, I would. It's stressful, overwhelming, and humbling, and that's just in the days leading up to the vacation! Add in a daughter with bad motion sickness and a son with ADHD who can't sit still, and you'd probably question why we'd ever leave the house in the first place. What I also know is that some of the most magical memories we've created as a family have been on vacation. I know that the conversations around the dinner table often center on a place we've visited, the people we've met, or something funny and unexpected that happened along the way. I know that the many framed photos that adorn the walls of our home are of us laughing in some of the most beautiful places—near and far.

Whether you travel one hour or 12 hours away, there is no questioning the positive benefits traveling has on our kids and family—from fostering independence to encouraging curiosity and sparking a lifelong love of learning and exploration. Not to mention, you'll always appreciate home in a new light after traveling.

My own deep-rooted excitement for discovering new places is the dominant reason we continue to pack our bags and get away. This past summer, I decided to take some much-needed downtime with the kids and indulge in a few luxury weekend getaways. I was particularly seeking out resorts that strike the perfect balance of stylish five-star comfort with outdoor kid-friendly activities—somewhere no farther than a three-hour drive from L.A. (Did I mention my daughter has motion sickness?)

Today, I'm sharing three breathtakingly beautiful Southern California resorts I discovered that perfectly matched our travel desires. These spots are all very different in what they offer but ended up being exactly what this fashion-editor mama was looking for: chic and relaxing getaways where the kids could fully engage in a new environment. These luxury resorts (don't worry—I'll be covering plenty of affordable and boutique spots as we continue this series) are must-see additions to your travel wish list and are 100% worth the splurge. Alisal Ranch had been at the top of my travel wish list for some time—mostly because I'm obsessed with horse ranches (I was born on one!) and love a getaway where the beautiful landscape significantly supersedes the dinging and pinging of digital life. In-the-know moms had often spoken highly of Alisal Ranch at school pickup, and I'd seen glimpses on my feed of the Dôen sisters riding horses there and stylish women I follow visiting the ranch for retreats—drinking wine and eating s'mores under the stars.

Located about two-and-a-half hours north of L.A. in the stunning golden hills of the Santa Ynez Valley, Alisal is a 10,500-acre luxury working ranch that offers a modern taste of the old West. Cowboy-style accommodations meet five-star resort hospitality with activities for everyone in the family. And I mean everyone. In fact, most families I met came along with their grandparents—many made it a whole family affair with uncles, sisters, brothers in tow—proving it to be the ultimate multigenerational resort vacation. The number of activities on offer are incredible (we wish we had more days to experience them all), and the setting is absolutely magical. We made core family memories here, so if a countryside escape with plenty of activities for you and the kids is what you're after, then you won't be disappointed. Read on to see my highlights.

Top Tip

Western chic is the vibe: cotton midi dresses with cowboy boots and chunky cardigans; jeans, barn jackets, and cowboy hats; closed-toe shoes for the kids; plenty of layers.

At this resort, my heart always feels lighter, my shoulders feel less tense, and a sense of calm washes over me. As my husband puts it, "[I'm] a much calmer person when [I'm] at Terranea." I've visited the dreamy resort a number of times, but this was the first time coming with my kids, and I think they are more obsessed with the place than I am. In fact, out of all the little trips we took this summer, my kids rated Terranea as their favorite.

The Mediterranean-inspired resort is nestled along 102 oceanfront acres on the scenic Palos Verdes peninsula, offering luxury accommodations, panoramic views, and an incredible array of family-friendly activities. There are plenty of amazing dining options, a stunning spa, and three pools, but mostly, you can't beat the serene beauty of the place. The fact that it's a mere 45-minute drive from L.A. is the icing on the cake.

• The pool, water sprinklers, and slide.
• Archery: My son had a blast—a truly one-of-a-kind and memorable experience.
• Collecting rocks at the beach: Terranea has a private rock beach, and my kids are in a rock-collecting phase, so that was heaven for them.
• Running around the resort: The wide-open spaces and paths allowed the kids to chase each other and roam free.

Highlights for Me

• The incredible views: Looking out onto the serene ocean from my balcony with a warm coffee in hand in the early morning, you can't beat it.
• The coastal walk around the hotel: The path along the ocean has the most stunning views, and you can walk all the way to the beach cove.
• The spa: It's newly renovated and absolutely gorgeous. I had an amazing facial, but I may have enjoyed relaxing in the ocean-view lounge even more. I could have stayed all day if I could.
• Our casita: It was serene, elegant, and spacious with stylish interiors, overlooking the ocean.

Top Tip

• If you have a large family, the two-bedroom casita is worth the splurge. The kids get their own spacious en suite room, and it also comes with a private balcony with an ocean view, a kitchen, a dining area, a living area, and a washer/dryer as well as plenty of other gorgeous high-end amenities.

Relaxed coastal elegance is the vibe: white linen pants, Breton-striped tops, breezy dresses, chic cover-ups, cozy sweaters.

If there's one San Diego resort to indulge in for a special occasion, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa is absolutely it. The luxury five-star sanctuary is tucked away on 45 acres of lush gardens and olive groves. It's about a two-hour drive from L.A. (inland from the coast) and is Southern California's only Relais & Châteaux property. It has garnered a reputation as one of the West's most sought-after resorts, and from the moment you walk in, you'll see why. The luxurious hacienda-style casita we stayed in with its private patio and hot tub was an absolute dream—100% this fashion editor's cup of tea. I'm going to be honest with you. I may have cried more than the kids when we had to leave.

The entire resort with its timeless and sophisticated Mediterranean décor is the most picturesque and serene place to get some R&R, and luckily, there are plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained along the way, including the pool, retro arcade table, and culinary garden and chicken coop, our personal favorite. I'm a tennis enthusiast, so one of the biggest draws to the resort for me is its award-winning tennis program. You can get private and group lessons or simply enjoy playing for fun on one of its 15 courts. The attention to detail and service are absolutely impeccable. (The kids were greeted with plush toys on arrival and were able to relax into resort life with their own plush robes and slippers!) I could go on and on about this stunning sanctuary because it's hard not to fall in love with a place so special. If you love an elegant and understated luxury hotel, then it's one to add to your travel wish list. Rancho Valencia is worth the splurge.

• The relaxing room: Our casita was practically made for rest and relaxation. I could live in the gorgeous bathtub! The private patio was the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea replete with lounge beds, a fireplace, an area for outdoor dining, and your very own hot tub.
• Freshly squeezed orange juice delivered every morning: We all absolutely loved this special hotel custom. The kids ran outside as soon as they woke up to see their delivery.
• Martinis at The Pony Room: This restaurant and bar is a vibe with gorgeous interiors and delicious coastal ranch cuisine.
• The gift shop: Rancho Valencia's gift shop is seriously elite. It stocks some of the most beautiful brands, and its handpicked selection of kids items is so good. I took home a gorgeous set of Carrière Frères candles.
• A morning of tennis: I'm always happier playing tennis, and I spent a fun morning hitting balls with my husband and the kids.
• Riding bikes around the property with my son was a blast and a great work out!
• The culinary garden: I loved seeing what they were planting and trying the fresh raspberries.

Top Tip

• Ask for an outdoor table overlooking the lawn at The Pony Room for dinner. That way, the kids can run around and play bocce or soccer while waiting for the food, and you can keep an eye on them while enjoying your martini.

Randi, my 22-month-old son, is no stranger to travel. I started him very early, from L.A. cover shoots with me at 6 months to Paris Fashion Week with me at 9 months to a family vacation in South Africa (and a 14-hour flight) at just under 12 months. I have definitely faced my fear of traveling with a young baby in tow. Now, the reason for this mostly happened out of a promise I made to myself ("Do not let a baby slow you down"), but I cannot ignore that necessity was also a catalyst for getting him comfortable with traveling early. When my son was born, I had a very high-profile, highly demanding job in the fashion industry that required a lot of time away from home. Oftentimes, it required me to be on a plane across the country every other week for years. As a new mom, I was not willing to let the demands of my job control the time I had with my son, so Randi becoming my travel partner was my only solution.

The Why

Fast-forward to almost hitting the year mark of becoming an entrepreneur/freelancer and nearly entering year two of being a mom, my priorities have shifted. Although I love the creativity, fast-paced energy, and sometimes chaotic requirements it takes to make it in this industry, this season felt different for me. Taking a step away from a strenuous full-time role and having a very supportive partner who holds a mirror to me gave me the space to realize I was sacrificing too much of my personal life for my work life. I was so engrossed in the nitty-gritty of work life that I could not see that I secretly was in need of a break. This time, instead of working 24 hours around the clock for New York, London, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks, we planned a family vacation to Turks and Caicos in the middle of fashion month—my busiest season. I hightailed it out of the city right after NYFW was wrapped to go completely offline during London and Milan Fashion Week, something I never could have done in any of my previous full-time roles.

The Place

We booked our stay at Beaches Turks and Caicos during its Fall Fam Jam, which I have to admit was not initially my ideal vacation. I am used to bringing my son along to places I either need to be, like on set, or want to be, like a South African safari game drive. Quite honestly, they're not the most kid-friendly places. This time around, that was not the case. Beaches is known to be more of a kid-friendly vacation resort, and the event programming on the resort during the month of September was curated to keep little ones entertained. Nevertheless, I was still excited to get to Turks and enjoy the crystal-clear water and beautiful beaches, sit in the sun, and not think twice about a street style photo or runway show.

The Highlights

It did not disappoint, and little did I know, September is the perfect time to head to Beaches. With the back-to-school season for the older kids bringing fewer crowds and the perfect weather with not a storm or hurricane in sight, the timing was kismet. The resort is all-inclusive, so I did not have to plan an itinerary or research where to eat. This also meant we did not have to do a ton of moving around, which is always tough when traveling with a kid and all their stuff. The restaurants on the premises were hypersensitive and cautious to food allergies. Randi has several severe allergies, so this is extremely high on our priority list when researching where to stay and eat. Our room was a spacious multi-bedroom suite right on the ocean complete with our own personal butler who could help with anything from bringing us an afternoon snack to finding swimming diapers for Randi. There was also entertainment for kids, which included activities every day such as yoga, painting, music class, etc. Things felt balanced for parents, too, with adult-only pools and restaurants so that you can get a break if needed. We opted to get a babysitter one night so we could have a parents' night out at the resort.

The Learnings

One of my biggest takeaways from this trip is that not every vacation needs to be a sexy, vibey trip. Life changes, and travel looks different with a kid. The purpose of this trip was to make sure I intentionally was making time for what matters most in my current stage—life and family—and truly giving myself a break from the usual noise I am used to navigating during fashion month. I had to constantly remind myself on the trip to not feel guilty and that work will always be there and FOMO is not real. I also had to brace myself to lose some control. Since there were other kids on the trip, it felt a little chaotic at times. Randi by himself is one thing, but other kids' energy mixed in was a lot to handle. It was great for him to get into and scary for me at times, leaving room for things to quickly go left.

The Advice

My best piece of advice when traveling with your young kids is to sometimes—key word: sometimes—pick a kid-friendly destination mostly because of the convenience it gives parents.

With that comes my second piece of advice, which is to opt for a babysitter if that is an option you are comfortable with. The resort had CPR-trained babysitters who had worked for 10-plus years on the resort watching young kids. I know it seems scary, but parents deserve alone time too. Another key to traveling with a kid is safety. If allergies are a concern, bring an EpiPen and snacks kids can have just in case and triple-check all medicine is secured before leaving the house. Another not-so-obvious piece of advice is to buy a lifeguard-certified life vest based on the child's size if you plan to be around water or on a boat. Lastly, carry a stroller that travels well, is lightweight, has enough storage, and you can bump around without worrying about scuffs and damage.

My newfound love for hunting down pajamas for my boys has become something of a specialty. I can scroll past a hundred jumpers without blinking, but show me a striped cotton pajama set, and there it goes, instantly in my cart. There’s just something about that post-bath moment, their hair neatly combed, faces clean, matching in their pajamas. It’s one of those moments you wish you could bottle up and keep forever.

The thing about pajamas is they don’t lie. One week, they fit perfectly, and the next, the sleeves are hovering mid-forearm and the pant hems are creeping toward their knees. Suddenly, everything’s being folded into a hand-me-down pile, and I’m back online hunting for more. We’re deep in the growth-spurt years with no real end in sight, just a steady rotation of cotton sets.

Finding matching ones isn’t always easy, especially with an age gap in the mix, but I’ve developed a bit of a system: stripes, gingham, soft jersey, and anything that buys you a few extra months before it all becomes too small. Fun fact: Chic parents dress their children just as cool as they dress themselves. After all, it's probably not shocking that a tastemaker with a keen eye for fashion would extend that sense of style to their offspring. As the shopping director here at Who What Wear, I probably spend even more time curating outfits for my toddler than I do for myself.

I developed an aesthetic for my daughter early on that appealed to me and I thought fit her vibe at this stage, fully recognizing that she's a child and will certainly have her own opinions and direction as she gets older (which I'll fully embrace). There's a before and an after. Not a revolution. Not a collapse. Just a shift—a literal change in the center of gravity.

The body, after two pregnancies, doesn't really come back. It settles somewhere else. The hips widen, the pelvis anchors itself, and the stomach starts telling another story. It's not tragic, not sad. It's just that nothing falls quite the same way, and when you've spent half your life thinking about proportions, volumes, and cuts, it moves much more than a single denim button.

I've collected jeans since I was 16—Levi's 501s, low-rise Diesels, ACNE Studios, even a few pairs from Loewe. I've kept them all out of superstition and loyalty. One morning, I realized I wouldn't fit into them again, not even almost.

It's not about weight. It's about structure. The pelvis opened like a door you never quite close again. Even if I lost weight, even if I ran 10 kilometers a day, I wouldn't get that geometry back.

So I started searching for new references: jeans that hug without squeezing, high-waisted ones that shape without restricting, mum shorts that work with cropped tops or a scarf worn as a makeshift shirt. Sometimes, I go the other way—low-rise jeans again—for comfort and for that slightly looser, cooler attitude.

The hardest part isn't the morphology; it's the social mirror. Can I still wear minishorts? A crop top? Loafers with white socks without looking like a late teenager? I'd love to say yes without hesitation, but sometimes, standing in front of the mirror, I catch myself wondering, Is this still me, or am I trying to be the person I used to be?

We tell ourselves motherhood shouldn't change anything, but the truth is it changes everything. It changes the way we walk, the way we rest our hands on our waist, the way we cross our legs. It even changes our relationship to sexiness. It's no longer about seduction. It's about feeling at ease in a body that has done its job.

I used to love short dresses. I still do, but I wear them differently now—with a long jacket, a soft trench, something that smooths the lines. I cover more, but I cheat better.

I've discovered the beauty of layering: a shirt tied over jeans, a scarf over a dress, a soft cardigan thrown over a pair of shorts. It's not about hiding. It's about balancing and creating shadows, movement, dimension. The silhouettes gain density, mystery.

There's this quiet pleasure in matching my look to my baby's—almost unconsciously. Think striped shirts from La Veste, beige trenches, matching Bobo Choses booties. It looks deliberate, but it's really just continuity.

No one talks enough about stroller style. It's an entire category on its own built around silent adaptations. Bags have to be worn crossbody, jackets must let you bend down without tearing, and shoes have to survive three flights of stairs with no elevator. Chic is measured in endurance.

I've learned to spot the stable pieces: thick shirts that don't wrinkle, jeans that don't slide down when you crouch, sunglasses that hide sleepless nights. Elegance becomes logistics. A hat that protects you from the sun while saving a questionable hair day, that's what post-maternity style is—a grounded kind of glamour that's anchored in real life.

I almost never wear makeup. I'd rather invest in good beauty products, the ones that actually do something, even after four hours of sleep and a forgotten bottle of micellar water. I have my little rituals: an eye serum that cools the gaze, hydrating masks that fake rest, rich creams applied by hand onto still-damp skin. It's my version of makeup—invisible but essential.

What fascinates me today isn't so much the lack of sleep. It's the temptation to "correct." Botox, fillers, and lasers promise instant radiance. I watch it all with a mix of curiosity and caution. In Paris, the options are endless, which is exactly what makes them terrifying.

Some women, like Kris Jenner, have taken it very far and look 30 at 60. It's fascinating but also slightly unsettling. I haven't decided yet if I want to be part of it and whether it's a form of self-care or escape. What holds me back, for now, is the uncertainty of later. No one really knows what those faces will become, and maybe a well-placed wrinkle is better than a frozen expression with no story left to tell.

The post-baby swimsuit deserves its own chapter. I used to love minimal shapes—tiny bottoms, delicate triangles. Now, I love structure, high-waisted cuts, solid fabrics, and designs that sculpt without punishing. I'm not trying to hide. I'm trying to live in it.

With a fuller chest, you have to relearn how to choose supportive straps and reliable fabrics. It's not less beautiful—just more honest.

There are clothes you hide in and others you find yourself in. I've learned to tell the difference.

The moment you start loving yourself in clothes again is very quiet. It doesn't come from a size regained or a zipper that closes again. It comes from a detail: a bare wrist, a single earring, the feel of fabric on skin. Post-maternity style is the rediscovery of pleasure, a gentle way of picking the thread back up.

It's not a comeback. It's a continuation.

Maybe that's what real glamour is: a morning when you pull on a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt and—for no particular reason—everything feels right again.

When I became Ducky's (Lucas-Grey's) Dada, my entire world shifted in ways I could have never truly prepared for. Everything—my schedule, my priorities, my dreams—started orbiting around him. Without hesitation, I handed over my time, my sleep, my energy. And honestly? I didn’t resent it for a second and still don’t. Loving him that fully felt like breathing.

But somewhere along the beautiful chaos of bottle washes, bedtime stories, and early morning walks, I realized I had slowly started setting myself aside. The parts of me that once made me feel whole—my passions, my personal style, my self-care rituals (gosh, I abandoned those biweekly manis and pedis)—were getting squeezed into whatever leftover spaces I could find.

He deserves to know the version of me who still shows up for myself, who still finds joy outside of my role as "Dada." He deserves to see that nurturing someone else’s light doesn’t mean dimming your own.

It started with small moments. Choosing to slip into my favorite loafers or my well-loved mules instead of just whatever shoes were by the door. Picking the chic flip-flops that made me feel polished on the days we strolled to grab coffee or explored the park. It was saying yes to outfits that felt good on me—relaxed but still intentional—even if Ducky was the only one who would see me that day. It was carving out a few quiet minutes for reading a book/magazine, listening to an episode from my favorite podcast or diving into my skincare routine during his bath-time soundtrack of splashes and giggles (gosh, I just love those).

And it was in those tiny choices that I started feeling more me again. Not the old version of me—but a fuller, more grounded one. Parenthood transforms you, yes. But it shouldn’t erase you.

Self-care doesn’t always look like grand gestures anymore. Sometimes it is a few minutes of silence before the house wakes up. Sometimes it is grabbing an iced matcha/latte alone and walking a little slower to savor the feeling of breathing on my own terms. Sometimes it is simply allowing myself to dream about things that have nothing to do with diapers, meal plans, or milestones. And the beautiful thing is Ducky notices.

He sees a Dada who laughs more, moves with more ease, and greets him with an open, energized heart. And even a Dada that learned all of the dance moves to his favorite episode of Elmo.

The world often tells parents that real love looks like constant sacrifice. But I’m learning that it’s the balance that matters—the dance between showing up fully for your child while still tending to the garden inside yourself.

Ducky isn’t just teaching me how to be a good parent. He’s teaching me how important it is to be myself in the process. To remember that style, self-care, and self-love aren’t luxuries. They are necessities. Our kids deserve to know the vibrant, passionate people who raise them. They deserve to see us thriving, not just surviving.

So to every parent reading this: It’s okay to take up space.

It’s okay to wear the outfit.

It’s okay to chase the dream.

It’s okay to tend to your own heart while holding theirs.

Because when we don’t forget who we are, we give our children permission to never forget who they are either.

And every day, as I slip on my loafers, slip into my mules, or slide into my favorite flip-flops with Ducky by my side, I’m reminded we’re both becoming—together.
