PAIGE co-founder and Creative Director Paige Adams-Geller went from working as one of the top fit models to launching her namesake brand in 2005. For her, working as a fit model was fashion boot camp. "I felt like I went to fashion 101 school, and I fell madly in love with design, and premium denim became an expertise of mine," she said.

After working as a fit model, Adams-Geller realized there was a hole in the market for a denim brand created from a female designer's perspective. "I really wanted to showcase what I wanted to wear," she said.

In the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Adams-Geller shares how her fit modeling background helped her launch PAIGE, the one PAIGE item she can't stop wearing, and more.

Talk to me a little bit about starting the brand, and let's go back to some of those early days of the business.

I always like to share a little bit about my history, personally, before I start talking about the brand. I think that it really makes sense when you understand that part of my life. I grew up in Alaska. I left Alaska at the age of 16 when I graduated high school and moved to New York to model.

I was in the entertainment industry for a bit and then went to USC to go to university. When I got out of university, I still wanted to be in the entertainment world. I was acting and singing and modeling and, unfortunately, realized that because of my Me Too experiences, that was not going to be a healthy environment for me.

When I was reconsidering my career, I fell into this world of what is known as a fit model. That is how I was introduced to fashion in a different perspective other than modeling. When I started working as a fit model, I was introduced to all different kinds of fashion, where I actually got to be the body, where the garments were draped upon and the patterns were created. I felt like I went to fashion 101 school, and I fell madly in love with design, and premium denim became an expertise of mine.

Then I began working as a fit consultant and design consultant for a lot of the most successful companies that were born during those years. After being very fulfilled working as a fit model and design consultant, I felt that there was a missing link where there needed to be a brand born and created from a female designer's perspective and creative director's perspective that really could introduce denim in a new way and showcase what I think all of us were looking for at that time.

That is really how the brand was born. I really wanted to showcase what I wanted to wear and think about denim as the foundation of a wardrobe in different fits so that you could end the drama and the trauma of trying on denim.

Talk to me about that first collection. What were some of the key pieces? I always love an origin story moment.

This was when low-rise jeans were everything. All I could find were low-rise jeans that were maybe just right above the playing field—like dangerous. They were so low.

Those were the things that were challenging. It was, "How can I create a low-rise bootcut that is super flattering but still kind of really works on the female figure?" The way we're built, things always react better on a body when they're a little higher in the back and a little lower in the front because it helps sit on the hips and stay, and they don't drop as much. The Laurel Canyon jean was born. That was the first jean I ever designed.

Laurel Canyon came in this beautiful Italian Candiani denim. That denim was feminine with the twill lines. It didn't look super rugged and rustic. That denim in indigo form could create lots of beautiful washes. We had the Laurel Canyon in light, medium, and dark. Then we had light destruction, medium destruction, and dark destruction. Those were the six washes, and that was the first jean.

Then we developed a few other jeans that were a little bit more trouser-centric because I wanted something to be a little bit more dressy and elevated. There was a jean that was called the Santa Monica trouser, and there was a Brentwood trouser, and then there was a Sunset Boulevard miniskirt.

All of these fits came in all those different washes. We also had a Mulholland Drive. That was another trouser. Everything was based off of L.A. streets and L.A. lifestyle.

What would you wear for brunch with friends?

There's this really cool jean that we have out that's called the Bella, and the Bella came in a dark rinse, and it also came in kind of a dark-black rinse.

Now for spring, it's in this really fresh powder blue. The Bella is very cool. I feel like the cool girl when I wear it, so that's why I'd want to wear it to brunch with my friends. I would wear it, though, with a feminine top that's a little eyelet blouse that's called the Juno top to kind of make it a little bit more like yin and yang.

I could top it off with a leather jacket if I needed to to add a little spice. I would either wear it with a pair of sneakers—depending on if we are going someplace chill—but then I could also wear that a little dressed up with the heel and feel like I look super chic.

What is one item that you just can't stop wearing right now? What is your hyper-fixation piece right now, in terms of your wardrobe?

I'm actually wearing the bottoms right now. It's my Angela maxi skirt. It's a vintage black washed long maxi skirt with a slit up the front. I cannot stop wearing it. It also comes in indigo denim. I feel like this is the freshest new wardrobe piece that I have.

I also am obsessed with the Sasha jean. If I'm not wearing this skirt, I'm wearing the Sasha jean, and I'm dressing it up or down because the Sasha jean I can wear sneakers with or heels or boots.

Then this skirt is my new fixation that I just moved on from the Sasha.

Ah, it's that awkward not-fall-but-not-quite-summer-anymore time of the year. August and September are always the trickiest months to dress for, and here in Los Angeles, I've seen many 90-degree October days. (I don't want to talk about it.) This time around, I sought out inspiration from my fellow fashion friends, who have some fresh takes on dressing for this complicated in-between season. Who What Wear Associate Director of Fashion News Erin Fitzpatrick and content creator Tomar Thomas live in L.A. and Austin, Texas, respectively, so they're no strangers to fall that feels like summer. With a little help from Paige's newest collection, they came to my rescue with four ultra-cute outfits. We've got denim, including one pair of wide-leg jeans that both women are equally obsessed with. We've got layers. We've got dresses. "This outfit is more on the casual side and is so versatile—it can be worn for brunch, dinner, work, etc. My favorite part of it is the top. It has long sleeves, but it's lightweight, so it's perfect for the summer-to-fall transition. One of my favorite tricks with button-ups like this is opening the last few buttons. It gives your body a little more shape and is so much more flattering, in my opinion. (Plus, it'll give you a little breeze on warmer days.) I love how neutral this look is with the shades of brown. "I wanted to keep this look very monochromatic. An all-black look is a go-to in the fall, and I felt the checkered blazer added a nice classy touch. But the standout part of the outfit for me is by far the leather pants. They're formfitting (but comfortable!), very flattering, and feel so fall!" — Thomas

"I have a rule that when I'm eyeing a clothing item and it's also available as a matching set, I have to get the coordinating piece—no questions asked. I mean, it's a ready-made outfit that does all the styling work for you, not to mention that each piece can by styled on its own, making them a savvy investment. So of course, I had to grab this skirt set from Paige. I was drawn in by the adorable print: the dainty cherries, strawberries, and butterflies are such a fun alternative to spring's clichéd florals and make for a cute conversation starter. I'm not usually one to wear a lot of prints or colors, but the black background actually makes it so approachable. I paired it with a green sweater and white wide-leg jeans (an easy base to repeat throughout the spring and summer) for a bit of color and with a jean jacket and white tank for a more classic take."

"Nothing makes me more excited than wearing a suit—it's an easy way to tell people you mean business. And when your suit is as pink as mine is, it also shows that you like to have fun. Wearing this look already has me planning a lot of adventures this summer. It's the kind of look that you would wear from the office to the Hampton Jitney for a weekend at the beach. I originally thought my favorite way to wear this suit was as a set, but then I saw these white jeans and instantly fell in love. Summer is in full swing, and as someone who lives in New York City, where walking is the primary mode of transportation, I'm definitely getting my steps in. It's not unusual for me to hit the 10,000-step threshold in a given day, but in peak summer right now, that's looking a lot more like 15k+ between press previews, meetings, happy hours, dinners, and everything in between that's filling up my calendar. On busy days like these, it's tempting to slip into my favorite sneakers and call it a day, but instead of reverting to them out of habit, I challenged myself to source heeled sandals that are chic and actually comfortable, and the results are in.

I don't know about you, but I've hardly experienced a single summer that didn't leave my feet beat up and blistered from a pair of ill-fitting shoes. Sand might be a natural pedicure, but even the whitest of beaches can't fix my toes after a summer of days spent stomping on concrete in four-inch heeled flip-flops. In order to find out which shoes—specifically heeled sandals—successfully combine style with comfort, I took a few buzzy pairs out for a true NYC test: 10,000 steps (or roughly five miles).

Nordstrom's shoe section is filled with plenty of gems, but despite all the solid options, I still think these $75 sandals are one of the best finds. Not only have they been one of our top-selling products this month, but Nordstrom shoppers also seem to love them as much as our editors do. The last time I looked at the product page, the retailer told me that 50 people were also viewing them. So of course, I had to see if they were really as good as everyone seems to think they are. My test for a good pair of shoes is whether or not I can wear them all day (and night) in NYC without having to hail a cab to get everywhere that I need to go.

First things first, the strap on top is padded, so it genuinely feels like a pillow for your feet. The shoes feature an adjustable Velcro strap (rejoice, my wide-foot friends!) and have a wide heel that provides plenty of support. After weeks of testing different heeled sandals, I was used to skinny straps that mark up my toes or skinny heels that I can't help but wobble in. These absolutely did not do either. In fact, I decided to wear them out to dinner and walked from my apartment in Gramercy Park to Tribeca in them. That's approximately 2.5 miles. If that's not proof enough that they're worth investing $75 in, what is?

Okay, Reformation, you really popped off with this one. I'd been clocking the brand's cool shoes ever since it launched into the category but had never had the chance to try them out myself until now. It may have taken me this long to get on board, but now that I've experienced them IRL, I'm never going back. I tried two pairs of the brand's heeled sandals, and while they both won me over aesthetically, it was the Enya Wedges that took the cake for comfort.

Wedges offer the most stability of any heels, and these were hardly any exception. Usually, a thick strap can make my feet feel vacuum sealed in, but this pair is made from the most buttery-soft leather, so that was simply not at all the case. I could have walked miles (and did) in the three-inch heels, but not only did they deliver in the comfort department, but the cutout heel shape also hit on a major 2023 shoe trend. So it's really a win-win.

If you're looking for wearable heels that strike just the right balance of cool, heeled flip-flops are it. Endorsed by best dressed A-listers like Kendall Jenner and Zoë Kravitz, this shoe style adds just the right amount of casual cool to your outfit. But because they have minimal straps, they can quickly get uncomfortable, which is why I beelined to Tamara Mellon, a brand known for making sneakily comfortable heels. Like many of Tamara Mellon's heels, the Luster 40 sandals feature a memory foam–like support layer I can only describe as cloudlike. Normally, heeled thongs start to become annoying after an hour or so, but I could have run a marathon in these despite their minimal straps.

I lost count of how many years it's been since I first decided I wanted a pair of Maryam Nassir Zadeh's cult-favorite Olympia wedges. I think I've been eyeing them for the better half of a decade, and no, I'm not exaggerating. The only issue is that they sell out faster than Wales Bonner Adidas and were always fairly out of my price range. This year, though, I finally decided to splurge on a pair when they were temporarily discounted during the Ssense sale and was downright shocked at how comfortable they are. I always figured that PVC shoes were miserable to walk in—something about the edges of the plastic just seemed akin to footwear torture—but I couldn't have been more wrong. I've walked far more than five miles in these and can say with 100% certainty that I've never owned more comfortable heeled sandals. I'm convinced it's the wedge heel, which is why I'm investing in many more wedge styles this season.

I'd heard from my co-workers about Paige's shoes and how, thanks to their signature cushioned insoles, they are surprisingly comfortable for long-term wear. And just like most of the fashion advice given to me by my fellow editors, they weren't wrong. These mules have a nearly four-inch heel, making them far taller than the sandals I most often frequent. Yet they were a breeze to walk in and climb stairs in, which I had to do a lot of at all the subway stations I visited during a long day of press previews.

Here’s one thing I know for sure: whilst the amount of denim shapes and cuts are broad and often overwhelming, there is one style that has continued to show up across the decades and that is the flared jean. Loved by our parents and now by us thanks to their ability to carry you through the season ahead, they’re a staple in many a fashion person’s wardrobe.

For me, the thought of a flare used to make me nervous as it brought back memories of my own Miss Sixty and Killah jeans with their ‘large as life’ flared bottoms and a super-skinny top half… I have always preferred some space between myself and the fabric for both the comfort and more flattering silhouette it provides. Thankfully, in 2024, the flared jeans trend differs from the more traditional fit with front square pockets and buttons all the way (although there’s a time and place for those too), preferring a more modern cut with cleaner lines and finishes. The width doesn’t need to fit a small child underneath and the kick-out from the knee doesn’t need to be a sharp increase. A gradual slope is all that’s required to flirt with this trend and the waistband doesn’t need to be high and tight. Relax and enjoy it! Or, if you’ve always imagined yourself as a bit of a John Travolta strutting your way down the pavement in Saturday Night Fever then go wild and go forth!

Sorry, but what even is a comfortable shoe? For so long, I kind of just assumed that in order to walk around all day and not want to rip my shoes off the moment I walked through the door, it was a given that I had to wear something a little clunky (or sneakers). I accepted that comfortable shoes had to sacrifice style and looking on-trend, which just simply isn't the case, as you're about to find out. Had I known about the following shoe brands earlier, I could have saved myself some serious time, money, and blisters (so many blisters).

Once I realized that there's actually a wealth of shoes that are just as comfortable as they are cool, it was like I won the lottery, and now I go around telling anyone who will listen about my findings. I should also point out that there isn't a sneaker in sight in the below roundup. Nope, instead, I wanted to show just how sleek and polished the shoes on offer from these brands really are—you'll find everything from sleek mesh ballet flats to leather loafers you'll wear for years to come. It seems too good to be true, yet the three pairs of shoes I own from the brand speak for themselves. The true test? Somehow the pumps are downright enjoyable for all-day wear.

Ask anyone who owns a pair of Dr. Martens, and they'll happily share just how comfortable they really are. Don't let the break-in period deter you—once your Docs are nice and worn in, they actually mold to the shape of your foot, so it ends up feeling like you're walking on a cloud (speaking from experience here).

No matter the season, my classic penny loafers from G.H.Bass are always in heavy rotation. After just a few wears, they mold to your feet for the perfect fit that I swear makes them comfier to wear than half of the sneakers I own, and considering the brand was founded in 1876, it's clearly had time to perfect them. To me, they're the ultimate high-quality, long-lasting wardrobe staple.

Comfortable shoes (that don't compromise style) are hard to come by, so I was impressed to discover Essen, whose shoes have a timeless quality about them with certain details that make them feel more forward.

No matter how comfortable a pair of shoes promises to be, I always loathe the break-in period, so I was very pleased to find that the shoes from this Milan-based label have zero downtime. I wore its red suede ballet flats right out of the box for a busy day filled with meetings and barely felt a thing, which almost never happens with a new pair of shoes. It speaks to the great care that the brand takes with its quality and craftsmanship.

In case you missed this post last month, here’s the deal: Instagram is my job, so it’s safe to say I spend a lot of time on the app. As a result, I end up saving tons of posts from the brands and content creators I follow to come back to later and either explore further or purchase. So to save all of you some screen time, dear readers, I’m here to highlight the coolest things I saw on Instagram this month. The below are the best things from my feed in September. Given her status as one of the most calculated pop stars of this century, Taylor Swift’s big machine of media manipulation is as easy to fault as it is to absolutely worship and revere. Given my status as a certified master of popular culture (thank you, NYU), I tend to fall into the latter camp. Which is why, out of the chorus of Who What Wear editors who obsess over fashion on a daily basis, when asked if anyone had any feelings about her latest cover, I was the solo voice proclaiming, "ME!”

You see, in addition to being a longtime admirer of Taylor Swift’s musical talent and A-list reputation, I’m also a true believer in the fact that some things never go out of style. Case in point, her summery take on the Canadian tuxedo paired with excessive pink-tipped hair. Truth be told, I wore this exact outfit on the regular as a high school sophomore in 2003 (hey, it was easy to be fearless at 15!), and I was responsible for the addition of "no unnatural hair colors” to our dress code guidelines the following year. (Needless to say, our principal reprimanded me with a, "Look what you made me do.”)

Diehard Swifties know all too well that there is meaning behind each of the carefully selected 29 pins (13 on the right, 16 on the left) that adorn her jacket. Entertainment Weekly is ready for it, calling out the breakdown of each Easter egg in a cover line on its special double issue, which features one of the first interviews Taylor Swift has done in ages. However, to find out the full styling credits for her cover look, we went straight to her longtime stylist Joseph Cassell’s Instagram.

Obviously, her denim Gucci jacket is something out of my wildest dreams in 2003, and her jean shorts by Nobody Denim and accessories by Alison Lou, KatKim, Erin Ess Jewelry, and EF Collection are more in line with my more delicate style sensibilities in 2019. Either way, I love Taylor’s pink hair tips (cut, highlighted, styled, and dip-dyed by Riawna), which brings me back to December of my sophomore year.

Cropped jeans have become 2017’s biggest denim trend—and my greatest sartorial nightmare as a woman under 5’2”. What makes for a flattering ankle-length flare for taller women is mostly lost on my petite frame. Yet if there’s one thing I know about myself, it’s that I’m always up for a challenge, and mastering the art of cropped jeans is one I’m currently ready to face. Armed with the right tips and tricks, petite women can take on this denim trend too. To help, I tapped Jenny Wang, founder of The Petite Studio, for her expert tips on pulling off cropped pants.

“Worry about the fit first rather than the length. Find a pair that fits you perfectly in all of the right places and makes you feel really good,” Wang suggests. “Worry about the hem last because you can always cut [the jeans] for a raw hem or get them tailored if you need to.”

Instead of ruling out styles that aren’t specifically petite, says Wang, “Get creative!” Many pairs can be rolled up or cut for a cool, edgy look. She suggests finding an expert tailor who can help achieve a length that doesn’t overpower a smaller frame. Getting the right length, Wang adds, “can make legs look longer.” She also suggests wearing your denim with boots that hit the thinnest part of the ankle. Turns out, while this denim trend may seem intimidating for those of us with shorter stature, women of all heights can pull it off.

When it comes to dressing for work, even the most fashion-forward girls have to think hard about what to wear. Even if you work at a company that has a semi-casual yet stylish dress code (like ours!), it can be hard to know where to draw the line. Well, if you think you can work denim into your workwear outfit, we have just the look for you. We're taking a cue from one of our favorite stylish celebs that found a way to dress up her jeans in a totally relatable way. 

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stepped out in a monochrome (plus denim) look this week that totally made sense for her own running around but could also easily apply to the workplace. She wore a crisp blazer, a black-and-white patterned top, dark skinny jeans, and a tall pair of ankle boots. On paper, that seems pretty normal. However, it's the pattern of the shirt plus the tailored blazer that pulls an average denim look to a more thoughtful and sophisticated ensemble. If jeans are okay in your own workplace, this definitely is the styling trick for you. Even if not, just replace them with a slim pair of trousers! We'll definitely be trying it out in our own office this week.

What do you do when you’ve built your very own denim empire and have a slew of cutting-edge designs to entice the public with each season? You tap one of the industry’s most effortlessly chic supermodels to be the face of your brand, of course! At least that’s what Paige Adams-Geller, co-founder and creative director of her eponymous label, decided to do.

Last year, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley made her Paige Denim debut by modelling for the company’s S/S 15 campaign, and she’s back at it again this autumn posing as the ultimate rock star. To showcase her newest collection, which consists of luxe coated jeans, leather jackets, and cropped flares, Adams-Geller conceptualised a rock ’n’ roll–themed shoot that took place at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.

We had the honour of visiting Rosie and Paige on set during the production of this A/W 16 campaign, which consisted of bright lights, wind machines aplenty, and Ms. Huntington-Whiteley headlining her very own show.

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes interview, Huntington-Whiteley reveals her best tip for taking a pair of jeans from day to night and Adams-Geller tells us about the hottest pieces from the new collection. Watch the video ahead. 

WHO WHAT WEAR: Tell us about the autumn/winter collection and the overall idea behind today’s shoot.

PAIGE ADAMS-GELLER: You know, I was thinking about quintessential L.A., and I was really thinking about the music scene in L.A., which is always part of the rock-’n’-roll vibe of my alter ego. I think that I was a British rock star in my past life, and I say that all the time. I was like, “How can we bring that feeling into the collection?”

Then all of a sudden it hit me at like 4 in the morning, 5 in the morning—I was in Mexico, and I was like, “Oh my god, we have to shoot at the Troubadour.” I was like, “This will be amazing.” I really wanted to channel that even rock-’n’-roll vibe a little bit further by being in it, and then I almost wanted it to feel like Rosie was the rock star, or she was getting ready for the concert before and after, and what the vibe would be like, and then even see her on stage. She likes to sing karaoke.

ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY: Oh yeah. I’m in my element today. I’m on the stage, the lights are on me, I have a whole band. There’s a wind machine. I’m very happy.

PAG: I used to have a band myself, and so it’s almost like me channelling myself through Rosie and really starring at the Troubadour. We even have a marquee outside that says, “PAIGE featuring Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.” I was like, “This is awesome; it’s like my dream coming true. I’ve never performed here, and now I feel like I am.”

RHW: I’ve had a few phone calls from friends who have driven past the Troubadour on the street and go, “Is there something we don’t know about you? Are you performing at the Troubadour? What's going on?”

PAG: You never know what happens later. We’ll see, maybe.

WWW: What’s your best tip for taking a pair of jeans from day to night?

RHW: I think my best tip to take a pair of jeans from day to night would be switching the shoes up. Often we’re in flat shoes during the day or a more casual pair of booties or sandals, and then in the evening I would put on really sexy high heels or a glamorous pair of boots. Again, maybe changing my top from being a T-shirt into more of a silk shirt. This shirt I have on actually will look really beautiful in the evening, and maybe changing your accessories. I think jewellery really is such a fun way to change up your look. Pretty much all this jewellery I have on is costume jewellery, which is so affordable to make your look fun and easy.

PAG: You took the words out of my mouth. I don’t wear flats ever, but…

RHW: Me either, actually.

PAG: I was really listening to you, I was going, “Really? You wear flats during the day?” I might go from casual boots like these to a really sexy strappy heel, and then change it up definitely with a silk blouse and a cool blazer, or a really nice leather jacket. There are so many great leather jackets in the collection that you could actually just wear with a T-shirt in the day and then just pop it up a notch with a sexy blouse, but accessories really do make such a big difference, I agree. Putting on the silk scarves, tying cool ties around your neck, and really just changing it up. Just one little thing can take it from morning till moonlight.

RHW: The stylist has taught me that, because she’s just so good at doing all these little details, and it’s really fun to see an outfit transform from being simple or more laid-back to then coming alive with accessories. I think that’s cool; it’s really cool to see it.

PAG: It makes it easier when you’re on the go, too, because you travel so much. Being able to take an outfit and not have to bring five outfits—which I don’t know if I’ve quite learned that when I’m packing—but I try to change it up with accessories, and it makes it a lot easier for packing. Just a couple little things make a big difference.

WWW: Rosie, what do you love most about working with Paige and the rest of her team? What do you believe makes her brand such a huge success?

RHW: I was speaking to somebody on the team the other day, and I asked the question, “What do you think makes PAIGE so successful?" The answer was so clear to me, and that is really that you know who your girl is, you know who your guy is, and you keep updating the collection in a way that they feel they can come back and get something new, but they’re still coming back and they’re not getting anything that’s too different either. I think you’re really loyal to your customer, you really listen to them, and that is really important in a brand. I think especially denim. For me, I’ve always been attracted to brands where I know I can go and get something that I love each time, and it changes just enough without it being too different.

PAG: Thank you for saying that about staying true to authentically who our girl is. I guess that’s probably—if I think about why you’re the perfect person to be the face of the brand—is because PAIGE is very feminine but has edge and a little bit of chicness and coolness. I think that’s who you are. You’re feminine with a little bit of edge, and you’re effortless, chic, and cool.

WWW: Paige, what is it about Rosie’s style that makes her the perfect fit for your brand?

PAG: Just look at her!


RHW: I’m going to put my fingers in my ears. I always get embarrassed.

PAG: You know, what is so great about Rosie’s style is that it always looks effortless. It never looks contrived. She’s always polished, but she’s really natural and approachable yet gorgeous and aspirational. I think girls want to be her and guys want to be with her. Some guys might want to be her too; she’s just got amazing style. Every time you see her, she’s always put together, and I just love it. It’s quintessentially L.A. too, so it’s got that ease…

RHW: On the go.

PAG: And on the go, exactly; and her airport style’s the best. I don’t know, I can’t say anything negative. She’s just rock star status in my eyes.

RHW: Thank you, Paige. Have I gone quite red?

WWW: Rosie, what are some of your favourite pieces from the upcoming collection? Which pair of jeans do you see yourself wearing on repeat?

RHW: I always love black denim; you know that. I’m really excited about these coated jeans this autumn, because they give a bit of a leather vibe but they’re really comfortable and a sort of more-affordable version of leather pants. You know I’m a big fan of leather pants as well, and you’ve redesigned them this season, and they look fantastic. I’m also really excited about the cropped flare and the cropped denim, which initially when the trend started happening recently, I was like, “I’m not so sure.” It takes me a second to get on board with a trend, but I tried micro-cropped flares the other day, and I wore it while I was working in Paris, and I loved it. They’re really, really flattering and just give a slight edge and a point of difference to an outfit. I’m looking forward to rocking those in the winter as well.

PAG: What I’m excited about the luxe coating is that Transcend is one of our best fabrics on the line that everybody loves, because you feel like you can wear it from morning till moonlight. This season, we actually took the Transcend fabric and coated it to give it that leather look, so it’s so comfortable that you could wear this on an airplane to travel in and still look like you’re rocking leather pants, and it’s not quite as heavy as leather. I’m obsessed with leather too, so I think this will be a win-win.

Fresh from covering the red carpets during award season (like the Golden Globes and Vanity Fair After-Party), denim label Paige teamed up with the TV presenter for a quick shoot, where Bargh brought her own sense of style to each look.

Who What Wear Australia: What’s your #1 trend for autumn?

Renee Bargh: It's a tie for me—I've always been obsessed with over-the-knee boots, but I'm particularly loving the taupe/brown tones of suede boots and oversized-long trench coats. 

WWW: What’s the most surprising thing you learnt about your style since moving to L.A.?

RB: That Australian designers really do it best. I honestly find most of my inspiration from Australian bloggers and stylists, and order everything from there. I also realised that I really dress for myself and women more than I do for men. I prefer to be comfortable rather than sexy.

WWW: What’s been the hardest part about moving away from home?

RB: I miss my family, (lucky we have FaceTime!) and the beaches. I live by the beach in L.A. but they don't even compare. And also the breakfasts! Australia does the best egg breakfasts and I still haven't found anything that compares here. You wouldn't think smashed avocado on toast with poached eggs was that difficult?

WWW: Where are your favourite places to shop in L.A.?

RB: My friend's store Anine Bing is my one-stop shop—I live in all of her pieces. I also really like Reformation for more dressed-up items. Aside from those two, I buy everything online from Australia!

WWW: What has been your biggest “pinch me” moment in your career?

RB: I would have to say the first time I worked the Oscars red carpet. It was when I first moved to L.A. and it was pretty crazy. I'll also never forget the first time George Clooney said "Hi Renee" to me on a red carpet—I played it cool but I was dancing on the inside.

WWW: What’s the biggest difference between Sydney and L.A. style?

RB: I'm starting to see a lot of similarities now which I love, but I would say Sydneysiders are definitely more ahead of the curve fashion-wise. They know the trends in advance and look effortlessly cool. L.A. is more relaxed in the day but much dressier in the evenings. I'm loving that active wear has really taken off here—any excuse to kick around in workout clothes and sneakers is good with me!

WWW: What three fashion items can’t you live without?

RB: I live in denim jackets and I'm obsessed with my Paige City Of Angels ($320) jacket, I wear it with everything! My Adidas Stan Smiths—I’m in them almost every day, and think they look so cool with a sophisticated dress. I just got a new pair of Senso sneakers, too that have taken over (they have gold accents!). And lastly, one of my many Auguste The Label dresses—coming from Byron Bay, I love to wear little flowy, bohemian dresses. I have a whole collection of girly dresses!

I always have white denim for summer, but I do like to incorporate other coloured denim as well.

The perfect denim jacket is timeless for me, and it carries me throughout all the different seasons. There are so many ways to layer and style them.

The lightweight denim shirt (often borrowed from my fiancé's closet!) takes me from the office to the beach, and it travels everywhere with me during summer.

I love a denim dress in all different shapes, but currently I’m coveting them with midlength skirts.

Let's cut to the chase: If skinny jeans make you feel constricted and uncomfortable, they don't belong in your wardrobe. It's that simple. Yes, skinny jeans are supposed to hug the body. Yes, they're better when made of sturdy denim rather than a flimsy jegging-like material. But should they leave you fearing the compression of your vital organs? I think we all know the answer.

Despite skinnies being around for decades, it's surprisingly difficult to find a pair that strikes the perfect balance. Many of the skin-tight jeans out there are so stretchy that they start sagging in awkward places after just a few wears, and others are so rigid they feel like a straight jacket for your legs. What you really want is a considered blend of cotton and elastane; a composition that offers enough give that you can happily wear them all day, combined with the durability of genuine denim.

It might sound like a tall order, but after years of analysing high-street fashion and luxury collections, the Who What Wear team has amassed a wealth of denim-related knowledge. 1. Zara

Our very own editor Poppy Nash is particularly impressed by Zara's skinny jeans offering. "Zara's denim is like Marmite. You either love it or you hate it and I for one love it. I've shopped at Zara for years and along with dresses and shoes, denim is one of the categories I know always delivers. Sure, the sizing can be totally off, and on plenty (read: every) of occasions I've headed into a Zara fitting room with everything from a S to an XL in the hope that the buttons do up, but if I take my own advice and ignore the labels, I actually always come out with some really great jeans. Right now, the brand has tons of skinny styles, including a black, high-rise pair under £30 that I'd wear with a relaxed blazer and knee-high boots all season long.”

2. Mango 

Personally, I turn to Mango above all other brands for affordable and long-lasting denim. I still own a pair of black skinny jeans that I bought when I first moved to Edinburgh five years ago—despite wearing them constantly, they look almost as good as new, and I still pull them out when I'm building a sleek evening outfit. Dark denim is great for that. Mango's selection is also more inclusive than most on the high street; the majority of cuts come in sizes 4–26. With jeans this good, it's a relief that they're available to a range of body types.

3. Frame

Frame's Le High skinny jean is a cult hit, characterised by its super snug fit and stretchy denim. The indigo washes feel particularly expensive, easy to slot into both relaxed daytime looks and evening ensembles. Thanks to the tight fit around the ankle, this jean pairs well with the current flat shoe craze—consider a dainty ballet flat or Mary Jane to give this classic a Parisian spin. Frame makes other slim-fit jeans, too, including the raw-hem Le Skinny and the slightly straighter-leg Le Italien.

4. Levi's

Levi's is the OG denim brand, and the Californian label has stayed relevant for good reason. You've no doubt heard of the iconic 501s (you may even own a pair), but Levi's skinny jeans are just as durable and flattering. Choose from ultra high-waisted cuts and sculpting silhouettes, or one of the unique designs with cool detailing like a split hem or contrast stitching.

5. Weekday

"I'm not usually a skinny jeans girl, but the Spare Mid style from Weekday has me in a bit of a chokehold,” says Rebecca Rhys-Evans, our branded content editor. "The ultra black shade is ideal for effortless day to night dressing—I'll wear them with an oversized white shirt and ballet flats for the office, then change into some sparkly kitten heels and add lipstick for dinner. The mid height on the waist is perfect for pairing with a shirt, I tuck about 70% of it into the waistband and always wear a belt to create a billowing, almost 1980s silhouette that feels very Princess Diana. It's understated, easy and so chic.”

6. Paige

If you're committed to the skinny look and are ready to invest in a hard-wearing pair, turn to Paige's Hoxton jeans. At around the £250 mark, they're not cheap, but you can be confident you'll be wearing them for years to come. The high waist sits right around the belly button, perfect for tucking in shirts and knitwear without feeling suffocated. While the simplicity of the Hoxton will always have my heart, right now I have my eye on the new Bombshell jeans, which feature an exposed button fly. I'm sold.
